03.Dec.2016 Gary Andersen Will Leave Corvallis (Once The Rebuild is Complete)

VN:F [1.9.22_1171]
Rating: 5.0/5 (1 vote cast)

Not only his history:

  1. Rebuilding Utah State then leaving
  2. Going to Wisconsin and being bored with a program that reloads.

But watch his answer at the 2:50 minute mark of this video to see where I’m coming from.

The guy is clearly in love with the rebuilding process. Once this is done, he will look to rebuild something else. As Beaver fans, we should start to wonder who will be available year 4. GA will be done with the rebuild then. Year 5 the most. I get why people think he loves the Beavs, and he genuinely seems to like it in Corvallis, but I think he gets his rocks off rebuilding. Period.

Smith would be a good pick in my view.

Think we will find out more about Baldwin soon, possibly at Nevada and I really like him but there is something to be said for getting a Beaver to coach the Beavers.

I like Smith because he’s learning from a detail-oriented coach, and overseeing a balanced offense that features the running game, TEs, and the big plays too.

Baldwin might need more proving, but I think he’s a pretty good “gamble,” if he can identify good talent and he’s able to recruit character guys.

A kick-ass D coordinator would be all right too, assuming he’s willing to get the right OC and give him some freedom. I don’t mean Clune either unless he does so great in the PAC and recruits really well. But I don’t see him as a HC.

Not sure we need a gamble. GA is going to leave the program in good shape when he does bolt, so we need a guy with similar principles and all that to keep it rolling. Baldwin is a bully with his tweeners and not sure that all works at the P5 level. If he can prove it someone first fine.

Maybe someone on his staff can learn from GA and carry the torch.

I’d like to see Baldwin at a better school. Like a San Diego State or San Jose State type school. At E. Washington he gets all the tweeners who can’t make any of the PNW P5 teams then gangs up on the crap teams in that conference.

By next year they will win 6 to 8 games, so by year 4 I’m thinking the rebuild is complete. At that point we’re vulnerable to him leaving. My only hope is his wife/family loves Corvallis and is tired of moving. But right there in his own words he admits to getting his rocks off rebuilding and not caring about W/L record. It’s cool in a way because Oregon State needs a guy like that who just wants to change the perception. But bad because he’s a great coach/great guy who I’d like to see stick around at least a decade and establish a “golden years” of OSU football.

we now know in retrospect that Andersen in year 2 “woulda, coulda, shoulda” won 6. Next year you have to consider six wins the “floor” with 7-8 wins the upside potential. Thus, in three years he would have achieved the normative standard under Riley at his best, without the head start Dennis gave Riley on his second go-round.

    • angry angry says:
      VN:F [1.9.22_1171]

Agree 100%. Talking to my lady today, I said 6 wins next year, with possibility up to 8. That’s not just because they beat AZ and OR. It’s more the talent influx, Riley’s players leaving, and the guys coming in buying in. You can see the “flip” and the culture shift. This will be a faster rebuild than CO and WSU.

I think 6 wins next year is a guarantee. If a few 50/50 games go there way then there’s that upside.

  • Bendobeav says:

I disagree that he is definitely going to leave. He’s only led a rebuild once and that was his “starter” D1 coaching job, if you want to call it that. Other than that, your reading way too much into a 10 second soundbite. I would worry that when we start winning big, that big name schools will come calling (like Macintire with Colorado), and offer becomes available that is too good to pass up. But there is a lot to love about OSU and Corvallis that you won’t find anywhere else (just ask Dennis Erickson).

I agree with this. Andersons name is somewhat tainted after the Wisconsin exit, only because he bolted after getting smoked. He’s going to hang around I believe.
One reason I think that is his wife is involved with the program, he’s made it a family thing. I have looked for mention of this from his stints at USU and Wisconsin, and can’t find any ( didn’t scour the internet, but I looked). Now that could be from empty nest syndrome, or he and his family are making corvallis and OSU his home.

I would think that if GA achieves a dramatic-type turnaround where the Beavs have a couple of 10 win seasons or play in a P-12 title game, he’s going to be top name for big schools again, but it seems like that did not suit him at Wisconsin, so I don’t really know what to make of him. I think he may be a lifer here. As Riley proved, if you don’t put in the effort, you’re going to fall back here. That might be challenge enough for him.

Catching the last part of the mbb game. Free throws? Fouls? When Craig Robinson coached, I was continually exasperated when he often called time out after a scoring play – seemed to me it interrupted the flow of the game. Wayne Tinkle does the same thing and I find it just as annoying.

I am disappointed because I thought enough talent was there to avoid WTF losses, but the team is back there again. My concern is that the staff missed big on the JC additions and that is going to set the team back (Stacy was pretty much benched tonight). The only time I quit following men’s hoops 100% was the 0-18 season. I don’t want to go back, but it appears that this is where the season is headed. It’s a huge let down after the excitement of last year.

I keep forgetting we don’t have an AD. On angry’s note of Anderson leaving, he said ‘if I can help a couple of programs rebuild like we’re doing here, then I can go happy.’ I take this as he really likes the culture here, and his ability to make the team his own. Corvallis is a unique place that has required a unique approach. Just because something worked for one coach at one university, doesn’t mean it will work at another university. I feel it would have to be a special and unique place that would draw Anderson away. Plus, Anderson wanted to come here and coach where he didn’t need to talk to players, see the facilities or anything. Reputation alone he knew he could change the culture here. I honestly feels he knows as long as there is success and the team is in the top of the conference, he’ll have a job here. As long as he can win at Oregon state, records won’t matter because it’s the way you prepare in the off season, it’s the way you practice, it’s the way you play, it’s the way you act, the way you bond with your team that will define your success that will reflect your record. Gary will stay here as long as he’s wanted and is winning. Once the culture starts to change, he’ll leave at that point.

I think GA will be here through 2023. Rebuild isn’t a Holiday or Alamo Bowl. It would need to be a Rose Bowl to truly bury any talk of Riley. Also believe he enjoys raising all aspects of the program including recruiting & facilities. It will take a string of atleast 3 very good seasons of Sun, Holiday, Alamo or Rose Bowls in a steady progression to really make the desired Reser West Side that matches the East but with a greater Club Level a reality.

GA won’t consider the Oregon State rebuild complete until it is clear OSU has become a winner all around. He would love to get a nice Civil War streak going as well. 4 straight versus Oregon, which is achievable, would cement him in OSU lore & would really take OSU to the ‘we own the state’ place the faithful are hungry for & believe GA could bring.

Some people love to buy houses in poor condition, rebuild them, then move on to another and do it all over again. That doesn’t appeal to me in terms of means to income or a way to live, but I’ve met some people that really enjoy it.

this approach is hard on Andersen’s career winning percentage, because the first two years are loaded with losses. His overall winning percentage won’t reflect how good a coach he is as much as what kinds of programs he likes to take over AND how good he is.

My take on the subject above. Reading the entire situation I believe GA had a blast building Utah St and enjoyed seeing the fruits of his labor. The issue is we all know Utah St is not a “destination” job. So Wisc comes knocking and like all young hot coaches GA takes the logical leap to a big time gig. He soon realizes there is nothing that needs to be built at Wisc and he has Alverez looking over his shoulder. Wisc was never going to be his program and my guess was not having near as much fun as he did at Utah St. Biley bolts and all of a sudden GA sees the best of both worlds at OSU. He can build a power 5 program from the ground up and then completely own it once the rebuild is complete. He will be well into his 50’s and my guess is that he will want to enjoy building his own legacy and put his stamp on our program. Might be pie in the sky but my gut tells me this is how it will play out.

So? They beat the same tOSU team that beat Michigan. That’s what happens when you have 3 teams that go 1-1 head to head. Molest U’s 2nd loss came by 3 pts to Pitt. That same Pitt team that handed Clemson it’s only loss of the year and in death valley.

      No conference championship? No CFP

with my worthless opinion out of the way tOSU will get in. 2 of these 3 will be on the outside looking in……………..Leg humpers, Harbaugh’s, Molest U

With the treatment of the Pac it would not surprise me to see them get left out again.

    My take on the interview.
    1) Is the interviewer Mike Parker’s fat, bald brother?
    2) Not caring about wins and losses= excuse for a couple of bad seasons that he probably did not expect when he took the job. He didn’t figure MR had left such a bare cupboard.
    3) All these guys want adulation. He was never going to have that in Madison. He would always be a caretaker for Barry Avlerez’s creation. PC is the perfect coach for that situation. GA can build he own program in his image and if successful will get a statue outside Reser when he hangs it up.
    4) Utah is the only place I would worry about him leaving for, but does he want to follow his buddy Willingham?

I think he doesn’t care about the wins and losses at first. When you take on rebuilds, you can’t be worried abut your career winning percentage, because it will be mediocre. The first two years are gong to be dominated by loses. If you’re a good enough coach to turn it around, your last 2-3 years will be winning seasons then you move on. But a coach who takes this approach is unlikely to have an impressive career winning percentage.

Harbaugh is probably an exception He turned around Stanford, SF, and brought Michigan back pretty quickly. I’m guessing he stayed at Stanford long enough that a majority of his time was on the winning side, but I haven’t reviewed his career record.

    Regarding PSU.
The third and fourth best teams in the B1G played for the championship last night.
Is Pedo State the best….no. Are they the most improved….yes for sure. The luckiest, no doubt.
If Gopher QB Mitch Leidner didn’t suck so bad they never would have been in the game.
Tied game with five minutes left and he throws a pick in the endzone from about the twelve yard line
No points. Get a stop and drive down to the red zone. Coaches can’t trust him so they stupidly play for a FG instead of aggressively trying for a first down which would have allowed them to run out the clock before kicking the game winner. Leave fifty five seconds and PSU gets two miracle plays to get in position to force OT, which they win. The starting CB and the starting nickel back for the Gophers miss the game due false sexual assault charges. Barkley held to 39 yards in regulation and all the PSU yards come against the backups in a depleted secondary. Sorry, I can’t see this team as a legitimate National Title threat. Bama would crush them.

If Huskies get the 3 seed look for them to beat Clemson. If Ohio State is the 4, they are going to give Alabama all they xan handle. Alabama would kill Penn St by 21+. Chance at a Washington-Ohio State final and I could see Huskies taking that after Ohio St is worn down by Alabama. If Huskies play Alabama in final I expect a clise game but Huskies to have their work cut out for them. Would be fitting if UW got a National Championship on their first time in Playoff versus Oregon who couldn’t get it done.

Of course, we know it’s not about anything having to do with championships or anything. It’s just a money grab where ratings win.

If USC goes to the Rose Bowl, I will likely not watch that game for the first time in… well… for the first time in my memory. There have been years where it’s the only bowl game I watched. And this year might be one of those years as well.

But didn’t USC already prove they are better than CU? They did the same to UW. So I think a team that beat both teams that played in the PAC-12 championship deserves to play in the Rose Bowl.

So Stanford should play in the RB since they beat USC?

I can see that argument if CU beats UW in the Pac CG… maybe. But neither should be punished for playing the game and losing. USC should be punished because they weren’t even good enough to play in the game in the first place.

No, because Stanford’s conference record is not as good. It doesn’t matter which team won the PAC cg, USC beat both the loser and the winner. Also, USC is ranked 12, only behind 2 teams that they beat.

            Rankings are subjective.

USC wasn’t good enough to play in the Pac CG, but they should be rewarded for not being good enough to play in the Pac CG. That doesn’t make sense. tOSU being placed anywhere ahead of Penn State doesn’t make any sense.

I can see the logic behind an argument like this if either of the two teams did not objectively lose their divisions to the teams they’re surpassing in subjective rankings.

So USC and especially tOSU surpassing OU because of subjectivity is not as bad a stretch IMO. It’s still abhorrent because winning your conference should be the only measure for being in a playoff that has less seeds than there are conferences. But it’s better than surpassing a team you could not directly surpass within your specific division within your conference during your season.

It grades each game based on the expectation each week. How many points did you score vs how many points does the other team surrender per game? How many yards vs their defensive average? How many yards did they get vs what you allow per game? How strong is the opponent? How well did your rushing and passing offense numbers do vs their defense and vice versa? What’s your overall season average vs the average of the teams you played? Where was the game played? Those are just a few of the things punched into this. They are not mine: I get these off of philsteele.com as a subscriber – he’s basically regarded as the most accurate college football expert in business. I don’t pretend to understand everything about it, but I will always listen to the opinion he gives, regardless of whether or not I agree with it.

if he complains about it I’ll stop. Generally I only post the Beaver-related content. And I do post my own opinions, they’ll be along later in the spreadsheet link I post every week.

Here’s a few facts that I think are being taken into account on this system. I’m not saying I agree blindly I’m just trying to see if I can decipher the logic that is being used. These are also goals I’d like to see OSU fix next year.

Oregon had a tougher schedule than Oregon State. Oregon had to play USC (top 25) and ASU while we got UCLA (losing record) and Arizona. Our marquee non conference game was Minnesota. Theirs was Nebraska. Nebraska was a stronger team this year.

Oregon State’s victories all came at home. They did not beat one team with a winning record.
Oregon had one victory over a team with a winning record, a top 25 team, (Utah), on the road.

Oregon’s offense out gained their foes defensive average by 93 ypg. Oregon State was out gained by 47 ypg using the same metric.

Basically what you’ve got here is an Ohio State vs Penn State argument on a much lower level.

Keep in mind this is a grade for an entire season, not one game. The OSU grade wasn’t helped by the fact that Boise State stumbled and UCLA fell off a cliff. OSU also had a bad September. I would guess OSU WOULD be ahead of Oregon if the games that were played in September were eliminated, but this is a CUMULATIVE grade.

Like I said before, this is more an indication of the strength/performance of each team than a “who’s better now?” argument. We won the game. So why get flustered over a performance rating?

I choose to use this one because unlike every other person who covers college football, he watches every game, for every team, every season and spends as much time on us as say, Alabama unlike ESPN.

And as far as him being wrong, let’s see: the only game he lost on the Beavers this year was the California game as far as the straight up winner. The other ten he was correct. (FCS games aren’t predicted). The two times he actually put bets on OSU he went 1-1 (Stanford and Arizona). He missed the Stanford call by one inch (fourth down stop). Oh, he also was calling for Washington to win the Pac-12. In June.

Look, I’m not saying you should accept anyone’s opinion or guess blindly. What I like about this one is he will tell you exactly what he thinks, admit when he misses and tell you why, and I’ve never once been solicited to buy something else with a stone cold lock gurantee. They don’t exist. I share them because I find them interesting and relevant. No one is saying you have to agree with them. But if we don’t take off the orange colored glasses once in a while, and try to look at the Beavers objectively… Who is?

I think they’re fairly grounded this time around. From what I hear, there’s no Tom Izzo or Jay Wright talk. They’re assessing a couple coaches at the moment, and because those coaches are still involved in successful runs, they’re respecting the teams those coaches lead.

I think it’s nice of them to do so… even if I may be proven wrong as early as today.

I think they really like Fleck and his energy and the image they can project with him running their program. So I’m afraid we’re going to have to replace WTD with RTB on our lists of really annoying things said by people who say annoying things.

      Luck o’ da Beavs.

I also think if they don’t get him they will offer the job to Musgrave and run a transitiion staff until Oakland’s post-season is done.

A logical person would think so, but I feel like Helf’s firing was based mostly on emotion rather than logic. And this may have a big impact on their ability to hire the next coach. I mean, if I’m a prospective new hire, and look at Helf’s record (1st year: 11-2 (Alamo Bowl win), 2nd year: 13-2 (NC loss), 3rd year: 9-4 (Alamo Bowl loss after starting QB injured), 4th year: 4-8 (CW loss, 1st season with new QB), fired, Iwould be asking Rob Mullens how short of a rope he is giving the next guy.

Agree. They think Oregon is a destination job, but I view it as highly undesirable for any established coach. Chip/Helf…neither was established beforehand. They were lucky to get both because no established coach will want ol’-wrinkle-dick looking over their shoulder. There’s his idea money will solve that problem…maybe. We’ll see. I’m not at all impressed with the names being mentioned. I think the Beavs steamroll Oregon for years if they hire Fleck, Schiano, et al. Briles and the Navy guy both scare me a little.

The UW model (ala SEC) works best for the Beavers – Get a schedule between forty-fifty. Except I would pray to God we get snubbed from the CFB and get the Rose bowl instead. The championship is a joke. I’m tired of scheduling hot East coast teams, only to get blasted at the start of the season. >Is MLB Green’s decommitment from USC a surprise to those in the know?

I know nothing about it, but a lot of times a decommit like this is just because the guy didn’t qualify. USC is tougher to get into than OSU, so maybe we do have a shot if we haven’t moved on to a different prospect.

USC would give a waiver. If they are dismissing him, they think they have someone better on the hook. Stanford and CU are the only ones who require the PSAs to qualify as students first, and even they get preferential treatment, all things being close to equal.

Somebody had told me OSU wasnt recruiting him that hard amymore, but that was several weeks ago. I dont think we’d ever turn him down, but i would also guess that we already have a plan in place to finish out this class and he probably wasnt being considered as part of that plan, based on his status with USC at the time.

    Stanford
    Arizona State
    Colorado

    ROAD
    Colorado State
    Oregon
    Washington State

    Arizona

Also, Pac-12 is favored in 5 of 6 bowl games this year. Anyone care to guess who is a dog? ?

you need to trade out SC and Arizona State. The “southern California” “rule” for OSU, UO, WSU and UW is that they get to play in the LA metro area every other year. Since the Beavs played UCLA there this year SC will play in Corvallis next, with the return game at the Coliseum in 2018. We do enter an anomalous stage where OSU plays both Arizona schools in the desert next year.

That strikes me as a soft hire, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

He’s got a very experienced team this year, senior QB, very experienced offensive line. 7 SR starters on offense, 5 on defense. He doesn’t recruit that well. People seem to want to give him all the credit for a stunning rebuild, but that team was only down for one year before he got hired, they still had some talent and those seniors are what’s driving this team this year.

Honestly, this is closer to the kind of hire I expected Oregon State to make 2 years ago.

        A couple things to consider:

        1. Credit Golden with building the program itself to a respectable level. Maybe Addazio gets some credit for recruiting, but he won with Golden’s seniors and ran away pretty quickly after that. Rhule took that disarray and made it better than Golden made it. It was apparent two years ago, when a lt of really good seniors graduated, that he was on track for the last two years of success… where he was. He’s likely a better coach now because he did stay then and last year.

        2. Phil Snow is one of the best DCs in the country, and he’s the type of DC who will stick with his head coach.

        3. It looks like, despite Rhule’s best efforts, Penn State’s head coaching job isn’t going to come open for a while.

Morris going to be a stud OLB for the Beavs. Look for him to be amongst team leaders in tackles and make a few picks…hopefully a Pick 6. After Nall leaves always a chance they could experiment with him in a few offensive packages but Veavers will need him to be a key impact player in Clune’s aggressive defense & I suspect he will be.

Nall & Pierce, if they both stay healthy, have a strong chance to reach a combined 2000 yards next year.

      Orly?

New Baylor coach Matt Rhule turned down an offer from Oregon to go to Baylor, a highly-placed source told CBS Sports. Before taking the Baylor job, Rhule had met personally with Nike CEO Phil Knight, the source said. …
Why would he turn down the riches of Oregon? Baylor may actually be an easier rebuild. Oregon suddenly finds itself in a loaded Pac-12 North with playoff participant Washington, Stanford and a Washington State that has a chance to win nine two years in a row.
“It doesn’t seem right but Oregon’s not the job it used to be,” said a person intimately involved with the Oregon program. “They have the greatest facilities in the world, but you still have issues there with recruiting and weather that you don’t in the state of Texas.”

I’m guessing they tried for Franklin from PSU, maybe Fedora from North Carolina and both declined. There could have been other guys they approached but weren’t intersted. I think they then went for three realistic targets. #1 Rhule, #2 Harsin and here’s #3 Taggart.

Seems like Taggart is all that’s left unless there’s a surprise candidate on the horizon. In looking at his resume, he’s had one nice season (this year) and a losing record overall. This year’s USF team didn’t play any defense, so he should fit in nicely in Eugene. He also lost his bowl game last year to his previous team which has to be a little embarassing. Hire him, GA will be eating him alive soon enough.

Evidently, Taggart, the Bulls’ fourth-year coach who reportedly interviewed with Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens last week, has conveyed nothing to staff or recruits about the status of his candidacy with the Ducks.

One program source, when asked Tuesday if they have heard any Taggart updates, replied, “Crickets.” A handful of prominent Bulls recruits said they haven’t spoken with Taggart recently; one indicated assistants have told him they’re in a wait-and-see mode.

Seems like we could just look at which coaches start suddenly following Oregon commits and get a pretty good idea of who it is. Whoever they sign, they only have till the 11th to communicate with recruits, and then it’s a no contact dead period for am entire month. Gotta get those calls to recruits in ASAP if they want to salvage their class.

I find it interesting that 2 of Temple’s recruiting accts started following a bunch of Oregon recruits recently. Wasn’t coach Rhule rumored to be a candidate for Oregon, before taking the Baylor job? Wonder if he was pretty close to taking the Oregon job actually, but had Baylor sweeten the deal?

Yeah, that’s possible theyre just viewed as vulnerable targets, and Baylor needs to build their class quickly too. Noticed one of our commits, Isaiah Miller was followed by them too. But who isn’t trying to poach Miller from us?

Not seeing anything unusual related to the USF staff in general.

“Dead period” is kind of a misnomer. There can’t be any in person contact but written and electronic contact (email and text) is allowed.

Gotta think Taggart is going to try to poach Lockett from us. We did the same ti Taggart 2 years ago, and he could instantly hurt an in state rival. Either way, Telly’s (deservedly)getting paid this offseason.

Shit. Brennan left to head coach at San Jose State per Canzano. Hopefully we don’t lose any recruits but I can’t imagine we won’t have at least a few decommits.

4 – 8 is still 4 – 8, and anywhere but Corvallis he’d be gone now (See, eg, Helfrich, Mark A.) . Jonathan Smith won’t be available forever.
