  2. Hey NB, whats the word on David Bailey? 247 says he had an official visit in June and lists us as warm (I know, not the most reliable). But he would be one of the highest ranked recruits in recent history and it seems awfully quiet around here in regards to him.

A few new notes from WT on the newcomers:

-“[Davis] is going to make a big, big splash in the conference…his coaches told me I’m going to have a lot of fun coaching him.” His comments were basically that he can do it all and they expect him to make an immediate impact.
-Pointed out Taylor as a guy who they expect to earn playing time this year because of his athleticism, defense, and improving shooting ability (which WT said is better in-person than his stats say).
-Marial is still battling health issues. “The biggest thing is just getting him healthy.” I know he had surgeries on both legs in late 2019…it sounds like he’s still dealing with that. Could be one of those guys that just never gets healthy enough to be an impact player. WT made it sound like he’s actually a better shooter than post scorer.
-Every other guy he characterized first and foremost as a hard-nosed defender. It sounds like they’re pushing all of them (including Marial and Rand) to be viable jump shooters and not just inside guys (which probably translates to “they’re not great shooters right now, but we’re working with them on it.”)

It sounds like they expect Davis to take over for ET, and Reichle’s replacement will be whoever earns it in practice. That should be a good push on Calloo to get more consistent on D (since the wings coming in are all defense-first).

    • Hopefully they can build off the momentum of last season. It would be hard to replicate the success in the tournament but not unheard of. I think a better conference record is more likely and hopefully they take care of business against the weaker opponents in non-conference.

Hey nicebeav just curious how you see the DT position playing out the rest of this cycle? I know you said you think they’re still looking for another possible transfer. Are there any names you’re hearing? Do you think they take another prep guy or jc guy? Thanks!

    • I sure hope so. Right now our only guys 290+ are Skelton, Schad and Sio. That’s not much on the roster in case of injury.

      • I want to say sandberg, and shippen are real close to 290 and I think Anderson has been close in the past but not sure what their current weights are obviously. I would think they would ideally want a transfer that has 2 to 3 years of eligibility so they can space out the players eligibility and redshirt Wright. Or if they can get Graham I would say that would be solid as well and both could play 4 games and still redshirt.

        • Sandberg is 287 but he plays much better on the edge than in the middle, Shippen is 284, Rawls 279, Fa’amoe 276, Anderson 276, Hodgins 274 and Saluni is 270 (OLB). Any of those guys could put on some weight before the season is starting for sure but the best case would be these guys staying on the edge. A 3-4 defense is really more like 3 DT and 2 DE with 2 MLB.

    • I think we’d still bring in a a transfer if the right fit can be found. I don’t know who that would be though. Several candidates out there, but I don’t think they’re going to just bring in a body unless it’s worth using a scholarship.
Seems like they could find a JC guy who got passed over, given that the JC season happened well after signing day.

  5. F_nemac mentioned, “hole baseball head coach MIGHT be to going zona”. And Kendall tweeted, “Mark Wasikowski was offered the job but chose to stay at Oregon.’

Here’s what an Arizona writer said, “I didn’t think the ego of Oregon’s athletic department would allow Arizona to poach the Ducks’ baseball coach, Mark Wasikowski. Thus, new contract and more money. for Wasikowski, and Arizona wins by getting a more qualified head coach in Chip Hale. Just my 2 cents”

Hale returns to AZ where he played…….sorta like Canham…….EXCEPT Hale had 15 years in MLB including 2 yrs as Manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Still, I favor Canham; but it’ll be fun to see how the two contrast in methods and RESULTS.

Oh, and so far, Wasikowski looks pretty good.

Uncle Phil has to die some time soon, right? He’ll be 84 in February.
Wonder if Nike will still treat oregon like their baby after he’s gone? It hasn’t been a great investment for them, if we’re being honest.
He’s dumped over $1B into that program and still no titles outside of track/competitive tumbling/golf?

      • 1
        2

Titles I’m sure he’d want. But look at the brand exposure. All the new stuff they show off with the team. It’s basically a sample sale on a large scale.

        • But why not Ohio State or Alabama or some other Nike school where they would get real exposure?
Maybe tradition gets in the way of experimentation at the bigger schools, but Ohio State has been straying from their traditional looks lately anyway.
The main reason they’ve focused on oregon is Phil.

          • I agree. From a business perspective it is a likely a negative ROI on what Nike gets in return from Oregon. As NB notes, pump that money into Ohio State, Clemson, or any other school with a broader fan base (ND) for example.

It would also behoove Nike to be more balanced as collegiate apparel deals become more competitive as UA and Adidas try to gain more market share. Heck, even New Balance scored a deal with Boston College recently. UW went Adidas in 2018. OSU apparently sticks with Nike as the “homegrown company”, but I sure wish I could see the bids for whenever RFP’s start rolling in as the contract nears expiration. UW got an incredible deal with Adidas.

            https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.uwdawgpound.com/platform/amp/2018/4/10/17220376/university-of-washington-adidas-10-year-sponsorship-agreement

          • For whatever it’s worth, Nike’s CEO is from IL, Dartmouth grad, Stanford MBA. Probably no allegiance to U of O. They do still make sense as a “test market” of sorts, though.

          • 1
            1

I’m guessing oregon because he can do whatever he wants with them. He has so much power with buildings and the athletics that they can’t be told no. Just my thoughts.

          • but i’m talking about what happens post-Phil? The guy can’t have many years left. Does his money just continue to pour into oregon after he’s gone? Who decides how to use it, etc.?

Nike, as a company, may not have as much incentive to treat oregon as their baby wrt NIL, especially after Phil is gone.

  6. Might be a good time for a recap of the 2022 class:

    Current verbal commits(9 total):
    QB-Travis Throckmorton
    RB-Damien Martinez
    WR-Cole Prusia
    OL-Luka Vincic
    OL-Jacob Strand
    OL/C-Dylan Lopez
    DT-Quincy Wright
    LB-Melvin Jordan
    DB-Carlos Mack

So if we’re taking around 20 players in this class, we’re still looking at around 10-11 more players to add. You’d have to think a few will go towards transfers, so I’ll cut that down to 9 more actual true freshmen. The players I’m listing are the positions I think we’ll see being recruited to fill out this class. this isn’t a definitive pecking order since nobody would ever share that type of info outside of the team, so think of it as my best guess on how we’d like to fill out the class. Also, I’ve left off guys that we have higher on the list but have committed elsewhere already or left us out of their Top X lists (Aisea Moa is an exception). So if a David Bailey or Colston Loveland decided to re-consider OSU, they’d automatically jump to the top of the list at their respective positions. I just don’t think those are realistic scenarios. Also, there’s always the potential for a SDSU or Utah State commit to flip late in the process to OSU, but I haevn’t listed those types of guys.

Potential athletes still being recruited by position:
TE – Ryan Otton, Jack Velling, Jacob Newell
WR – Juan Wilson, Quincy Burroughs
    OL – Keith Olson
DT – Mason Graham (don’t know if we take 2 in 1 class though?)
DE – Sterling Lane, Mathias Malaki-Donaldson, Lance Holtzclaw, Isaiah Ward, Kyle Thompson, Hunter Lysholm
OLB- Shakaun Bowser, Harrison Taggart, Aisea Moa, Andrew Savaiinaea, Connor Kelley
    ILB – Kord Shaw
CB- Jeramiah Derby, Zeke Berry, Lorenzell Dubose

    • What’s the story with Salesi Moala? Reported an OSU offer last fall and it seems like radio silence on his whole recruiting front since then.

      • I didn’t really have him on my radar, but could see him being part of the ILB list.
Sounds like he’s supposed to visit campus around July 27th (I believe as an unofficial visit)

    • My guess as to how things could play out for OSU, in a realistic “best case” scenario:

      TE-Jack Velling
      OL-Keith Olson
DE -Sterling Lane, Mathias Malaki Donaldson
      OLB- Shakaun Bowser
      ILB- Kord Shaw
      CB- Jeramiah Derby, Zeke Berry

and then 1 spot left over for best player available.

If this happened, i think we’re talking about one of the best classes we’ve seen for OSU, so the stars would have to align to keep something like that together through signing day. But I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility.

  7. Lysholm has a seriously interesting offer list. Columbia, Princeton, Oregon State and Michigan State.

Whats the deal with Jacob Newell? I see we still haven’t offered.

    • Newell was supposed to visit us on an unofficial this summer, and then possibly an official closer to the Fall, but I haven’t heard anything lately about him.
Last thing I saw was he visited Arizona on an official in June, and it’s been pretty quiet since.

    • Expected but not guaranteed so still very good news. Need these guys to gel quick and we can make some noise next year.

  8. Dave Luli to trim down to 5 schools this weekend. Sounds like USC, The yucks, UW and Oklahoma are for 4 so he’s really figuring out that 5th school.

  9. I was a bit surprised there was no major talent transferring out of ASU after the recruiting scandal. Are any repercussions more likely to be implemented next year?

  10. Any thoughts on not offering Nate Vidlak? Seems like a great athlete they could play multiple positions. Obviously it probably wouldn’t be great to have a vidlak vs vidlak qb competition (and we have the Throckmorton commitment for ’22) but I feel sometimes these types of athletes are good to take a risk on, especially being home grown talent.

    • 2
      2

Losing Olsen sucks. I was worried when he started pulling bigger offers. I wouldn’t be surprised if he flips later. USC has 40 offers out for OLinemen and Olsen is the lowest rated one. Doesn’t Helton have a history of pulling offers before LOI to make room?

  11. 5

With the NIL thing OSU has a one or two year window to make a Rose Bowl. We’ll never sniff it once NIL goes through a full recruiting cycle or two. Not that we’re sniffing it now, but at least we have an outside shot. NIL just nixed even that small probability.

      • If Nike is funneling cash to your rival’s recruits so they will always have the top available recruits, why would you want to stick with Nike?

We ask this question every few years, and now it’s even more transparent, yet OSU always extends their contracts with Nike. Why help them and Oregon?

    • I still think you’ll get the same mixture of guys. A few standouts in the class that didn’t get offers to their preferred school, some under recruited talent, and then some blue collar guys that bring their lunch pails and want to be the underdog.

    • There’s a reason they started with the big NIL announcement first. Now evert recruit sees what is possible.
I think a full recruiting cycle is being generous even. With the instant transfers, each offseason will be free agency. Lost a player early to the NFL, no need to depend on the backup, just pay another star player to fill the void. They’ll be ready to go by fall camp.

        • 1
          1

Looking at it from a historical timeline and then into the future, what will it do with the talent pool and how those guys in the talent pool decide to come to OSU vs another school? Since it’s a new and wild card variable, I can see it all three ways for the Beavs (talent drops, stays the same, or improves). Like someone said previously, the top recruiting schools get a pile of talent each year, so what’s the draw for recruits to add themselves to the crowded pile? Maybe it keeps things static longer, where top teams stay on top for a longer period, but maybe middle tier teams have more relative good seasons (8 wins), and the lower tier teams stay in the gutter for longer stretches.

Over time, we’ll also see if businesses/sponsors feel like they’re getting a return on their investment, or maybe they decide there’s not much there?

          • 2
            1

Florida business giving each player on roster $6k. Could easily see Nike doing something similar outside of larger independent contracts with individuals like KT got. Question becomes, do they pick a few schools to do this for? They rep so many that you’d have to imagine there would be a threshold if how many they would do this for or the schools look at switching to Adidas, etc. Interesting times. From a Beavs standpoint, seems like it makes the 5* (not that we’ve ever been at that level historically) but we’ve been starting to Crack some 4* talent which could possibly put those players to different schools that might have more exposure to the $. Wonder if that had some play in Olson going to USC? I’m sure most players would probably choose USC over the Beavs regardless but this change has to have more of an impact now.

          • 4
            1

Change happens on the margin. Say in an average year we’re in the mix for 10 guys who have Oregon or USC offers. Say we land 1 or 2. Now say it’s zero because they have more NIL opportunity at those schools…

This is how it happens. At the margin. This is also how businesses go out of business. Losing one or two people here and there, and suddenly that adds up to a number that matters.

          • Isn’t Phil the biggest or second biggest do at to Beavs football outside of Rieser foods? So if he didn’t want the Beavs to have a decent program he wouldn’t be giving them a dime. It is beneficial if the Beavs put up a good fight against the quacks. So this NIL thing again creates some separation between the two schools. I would think if Phil follows his past history, he’d do something to help close the gap some again.

          • Where are you reading that?

Just windering because the only people I’ve seen say that also think Phil donated the $50m Reser stadium gift this past year.
But Phil has gone on record to say he wasnt involved in the $50m gift.

          • And he’s not usually one to donate money without having something with his name or a family member’s name attached to it

          • 3
            1

Yeah that’s been a rumor floating around for at least a decade, but I’ve never seen proof Phil donates to OSU.

        • Will the NCAA/ESPN/Disney masters do anything to try to offset the imbalance? Seems they would want to keep fan interest widespread as long as possible.
They are a slow moving outfit, take expanding the CFP as an example of a slow move to keep fans engaged more than a 4 team playoff.
Scholarship limits based on W/L record??

          • 2
            1

They’ll probably expand the playoffs, which is just dilution of product, but it might keep some fans more interested for a while. So at the margin you might lose fewer people daily by masking it with something like that.

          • I don’t think playoff expansion dilutes the product…I think the bowl system / the tiny playoffs were always pretty ridiculous for the postseason and extremely poor for competitive integrity. Most other sports have a much better and fairer system – even NCAA D2 football!

I agree they’ll probably do that and I think it’ll help, but not enough to compensate for everything else.

One interesting dynamic is whether things will change among the current “haves”. In the new money arms race, I would imagine that USC will have much deeper pockets than Alabama, for example. Alabama fans are rabid but it’s not a large or a wealthy state.

          • 2 minutes of effort for 6 figure pay day.
I figure if I can consistently crank one of these out every 2 minutes of a typical work week, I should be able to make at least
$6,240,000,000 in a year. Give or take a few billion.

          • This seems like a pretty legitimate compensation setup for players. You could do this for every player on the roster and it’s really no different from selling trading cards (aside from the uniqueness of it).

An artist makes a NFT of the player, sells it to a collector and splits the earnings with the player. Different NFT’s will have different values depending on the players’ popularity and likelihood of that player being famous.

          • Damn you guys. This was my first thought after that kayvon “announcement”. I was a couple days late. But in all seriousness how hard can that be? Seems like an easy idea and if the player becomes really good, the “artist”(you) and them can split the $

  12. FWIW, I have a friend who is deeply tied into the WSU program. He says most of the football staff there is not vaccinated and probably won’t be going forward. I guess it’s not just the football coaches either. It spans across many of the other sports, too. Just something interesting to watch as it could impact them in the Fall.

  13. Be interesting when we play the Vandals this year. Garcia, Lightbourne and Harris all transferred there last season. Personally I hope we see Lightbourne about 20 times.

  14. Are you guys seeing any economic boom/v recovery up in Oregon? I’m not seeing it. Seems like a false narrative. I mean we’re in the peak of summer and downtown is only about half the activity of pre-covid. Stock market seems to have a lot wrong with their narrative.

    • Stock market narratives are usually pointlessly detached from reality. Construction is definitely booming in the northwest. I think with remote work you will see fewer office spaces filled and fewer brick and mortar locations.

      • Yeah but the US economy is 2/3 consumption. Are people out and about like pre-covid? Because the narrative is “roaring 20s 2.0 about to hit!”, and we’re now a few weeks into summer, and I’m not seeing that. And now Delta variant is on the horizon.

        • No, they are consuming through online purchasing. Amazon and other large locations like target have absolutely killed it during the pandemic and still are now.

        • This is going to be an eventful winter when everyone gets confined indoors.

We’re mass vaccinating and allowing people to congregate in the tens of thousands. Epidemiologists are absolutely dumbfounded at the perfect environment we have created for generating a strain that has immune escape.

          • What’s the solution then? What should we do differently? Mutated strains that will bypass the immune response would suck but when and how would you ever decide to return to normal life?

COVID isn’t going anywhere. We just have to learn to live with it at this point. While not proven yet, I suspect that existing antibodies (from infection or a vaccine) will still be valuable in reducing the severity, even if a mutated strain allows for reinfection. Enough to make Covid not unlike a flu.

          • 11

The solution is to start over. End international travel for a year, limit state travel, limit gatherings to less than 5 people. Start contact tracing again. Develop both conventional and antigen-specific vaccines. The advantage this time around is that we know what works for early treatment. It’s brutal, but we started opening up just as vaccines were rolling out, which was incredibly dumb.

Vaccines are effective if properly implemented. We are not properly implementing it because our public officials are advertising that it is a cure when, it reality, it does nothing to boost T-cell response. T-cell response is how the body sterilizes and prevents viral shedding. This vaccine is only good for suppressing symptoms. That is why an Israel news outlet published that the Pfizer vaccine is only 64% effective in limiting infection.

We never needed a vaccine in the first place. Now, because we are giving the virus the blueprints to bypass the immune system through the mRNA vaccine (which we are not properly implementing), we won’t have much of a choice.

The non-mRNA vaccines (like JNJ) boost T-cell response.

We’re not getting an effective lockdown in the US again without China-style ‘comply or die’ enforcement or a significant spike in fatality. The doomsday narrative is dead and people who were on the fence or opposed to compliance will no longer be compliant. We have more data than we did in early 2020 and, for better or for worse, people feel like they are able to survive this kind of thing now without completely shutting themselves off from the rest of society.

          • That’s why I got the JnJ, because it uses a deactivated virus that is not antigen specific. JnJer’s will still need boosters, but less frequently, because their bodies will be better equipped to handle variants than the mRNA specific ones.

The US already has a ‘comply or die’ policy pertaining to biological agents, which are derived from the DoD’s biowarfare doctrine. Those are draconian. All that is needed is to limit the size of groups people congregate in for a set period of time before and after people get vaccinated. We don’t need to lock people in at their work and isolate people from their families, like DoD’s doctrine states.

      • Yeah the stock market has become the inverse of the actually economy. Bad economic news means more stimulus and lower rates for longer stocks go up. Good economic news means no stimulus and future rate increases stocks go down.

        • I understand that and it’s been the case for a decade, but they’re pushing this narrative that we’re going to have the roaring 20s 2.0 and the biggest economic boom since WWII. I don’t see how that happens if people aren’t out and about. I get online shopping, but it’s a very small % of all consumption, and the savings rate has skyrocketed, so they’re not shopping from home, either. I just don’t see how this roaring 20s happens if consumption isn’t significantly ahead of pre-covid levels.

I’m not bearish on stocks. I just think they got ahead of themselves given what’s going on.

          • Part of the thesis is that the savings rate will reverse and people will start spending all that money they saved on vacations.

          • Yeah, but you can only take so many vacations, and those might be shut down shortly. Again, I just don’t see any of this priced in. We’re priced for a smooth reopening. I’m not bearish on stocks. I just think the past few weeks they got very ahead of themselves yet again. We need a full week like today to wash things out.

I also don’t see the amazing reopening they keep talking about. I see some reopening, but nothing close to 2019. It looks pretty timid and mild to me. I look every time I bike downtown; haven’t seen a big uptick in activity.

    • Personally, covid ended up being great for my business, we are actually slower now. BUT, we are ahead of where we were pre-covid.

Other business owners I know are feeling optimistic and having more business, but not necessarily a steep shot up. Downtown has been popping with people and bars restaurants busy when I’ve been down there after work.

      • Strange. I’m not seeing people out at the same level as pre-covid. They’re definitely out more than in 2020, but not the same as 2019.

        • I think you have to look at it by segment. The consumption segments that got hit hard were events and travel-related or restaurants.

Most recent jobs report showed the majority of job creation in the restaurant industry. That’s a good sign for them. The restaurants near me seem to be doing well, as long as they’re able to hire employees. Service level has definitely been worse than we’re used to.

From what I’ve heard, attendance at live events has been coming back, but slowly. For example, Atlanta Braves games have been at full capacity all season, but their attendance was low at the start of the season and has slowly trended up. People are readjusting to the idea that they can go to those kinds of places.

Went to the beach last weekend. Went to eat at 730 thinking we’d avoid the dinner rush. Was like 815 by the time we were seated.

          • That was July 4th weekend…

I hope we get a roaring 20s. I just am not seeing that on normal weekends. Activity has been above 2020 levels but below 2019 levels, and it should be much higher than 2019 levels if the roaring 20s narrative is to come to fruition.

          • Totally different system back then…no guarantee we’d get anything like that. In fact I’d put the odds of anything like that very low for various reasons.

          • Gradual growth is just better for an economy over the long-haul. When systems spike, that always causes breakages in parts of that system or related systems.

    • Around the Portland area it’s like a switch flipped on 7/1/2021. Everywhere I go is pretty much back to normal. Hardly any masks anywhere when out in public. Attended a minor league baseball game at full capacity.
I’d imagine online sales are huge still, like Nuc mentioned. But stores have been pretty busy too.
Mainly, large indoor shopping malls do seem to have taken a hit because of stores that closed shop and those online sales.

Was also hearing that domestic travel is way up. National Parks are turning people away before 9:00 AM in many cases. I guess Maui is asking people to not come there because they’re overwhelmed with travelers now.

      https://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/wireStory/maui-mayor-asks-airlines-fewer-tourists-amid-travel-78660787

But when the federal eviction moratorium ends July 31st, I’m expecting the real estate market to absolutely tank and recession to kick in.

      • My guess is that the moratorium will be extended again, and again, and again.

Like 2008, a real estate market crash may also crash the bond market, and the federal government does not want that to happen. Hell, a stock market crash could crash the bond market because of all of the corporate debt that has accumulated since 2008.

      • Yes please don’t come to Maui. Far too many people here and restaurants, bars and hotels are only open for 75% occupancy. Ridiculous wait times to go out to eat some places because of this. I don’t want to go out and do a lot of things because everything is so crowded.

What’s really going to be wild with the NIL stuff is when there are players that are more famous for their Twitter or Instagram than playing the game. I can see that the normally closed mouth college football experience may burst open with players famous for social issues. What will a school do when their middle line backer is raking in millions from the proud boys and NRA? What happens when a player skips a game because.they can get 100k for showing up at a BLM event. Could get crazy.

Yeah in the long term. Short term I think the politicians made a mistake, they are going to have to split up all that sweet lobbiest cash.

        • There was a kicker a few years back who had a YouTube channel doing trick kick types of things. I think he went to a school in Florida. He ended up quitting football so he could get the money he was making off his YouTube channel.

          • 2
            1

In fairness, last year was a very weird year with all the COVID stuff- game cancellations, abbreviated schedules, and major uncertainty all throughout made it seem more like a bunch of exhibition games. A lot of people were disengaged for that reason. The Beavs were very fortunate to play all their games- not many teams did.

Not to say it’s not a trend though, or that that disengagement won’t have a lasting effect going forward.

          • Yeah, it was an *Season, with teams playing variable numbers of games, discontinuity, teams missing key games due to COVID (e.g. UW missing PAC Championship, UO subbing in). But the risk is that fewer people return to viewing after realizing there are more important things than football that is poorly managed to promote competition.

I expect ESPN and others will be saying “College Football is BACK!” And there may be an uptick in viewership compared to last year, but I expect a decreasing trend. Do fans really want to watch Alabama/Clemson/Ohio State every year?

          • That’s the big problem for me. Even if it’s not OSU in any big games, I’d really like to see other teams…sleepers and smaller programs. The fix is to penalize success, which the USA doesn’t like to do. Teams that finish in the top 25 should have a decreasing number of scholarships to give out, donor limits, etc. Instead we went this bizarre but oh so American path of tinkering with a good thing, and then letting finances ruin it further.

          • Every major American sport penalizes success in one way or another.

The student-athlete narrative has held college sports back from doing this (how cruel to take away scholarships from those deserving athletes). It seems more possible now that narrative is being shelved.

          • I never liked that narrative because those athletes were getting free food, free education, free body training, free lodging, etc…already very well paid.

  16. It’s basically Pro Sports, but with no salary cap, very little revenue sharing, and the top 5-10 teams get exclusive access to the blue chip draft prospects every year.

If they made those changes to the NFL/MLB/NBA, would people continue to watch those leagues?
Maybe the top few teams, but league wide it would be a disaster.

    • 4
      1

It’s a crap model. My preference was revenue share with the university and a guaranteed salary for all players based on the share.

      • Why not just create minor league football at that point?

What student wants to see wealthy athletes driving around in Teslas as they’re trying to get their education? The problem is one thing (being athletic) has nothing to do with the other (learning). Unless they go to an Ivy League model, the contrasting motivations won’t ever line up.

        • That’s an interesting question, but I think the answer is school loyalty & tradition as a reason to care. I doubt I would engage with a local minor league football team.

Is there any minor league out there that achieves a significant following? CFB is a huge draw, even after the blows it’s taken recently.

          • Then why not spinoff each NFL minor league team from a University? E.g. The two minor league football teams in Oregon can be the Beavs and Ducks. Fans from those unis can still root for “their team”…NFL pays the players, renovates stadiums, etc. Students who are trying to learn wouldn’t have to deal with the distraction of athletes who don’t even belong there.

I’m sure if this happened Beav fans would root for that NFL minor league team.

        • Mostly infrastructure. If you pulled football it’s the death of all college athletics. Many sports wouldn’t generate the income to support a league. So essentially you kill most sports off minus the people who can afford.to train for the Olympics.

It would be nice for schools to spend their money on education though.

          • “Infrastructure”

Why? NFL teams could just buy or lease the stadiums already in place. It shouldn’t be up to universities to put all this money into players for the NFL, and that’s what OSU is doing right now. In the past we had a shot at “glory” (i.e. BIRGing), but now there’s not even a shot at that. Fans of OSU literally get nothing out of this arrangement.

          • Well that would be massive capital investment. Most stadiums carry some sort of loan so the new league would either have to buy it out or pay the monthly bill. They times 200 and you have an I sanely complicated and expensive proposition.

          • 1. It’s cheaper than the NFL starting from scratch and building stadiums.
            2. They’re going to have to do it anyway (i.e. when NCAAF ratings are so low commissioners won’t be able to negotiate TV deals, etc).

          • It’s basically really expensive marketing for the majority of schools. They all talk about how the value of AD’s is that’s the strongest connection they maintain with donors and the most exposure they get to potential students.

Many feel trapped because they’ll lose donor support if they drop sports (or change divisions), but those sports are a financial drain.

You can’t really extract football from the conversation about the whole university system just being FUBAR at this point.

        • They could keep the “salary” capped so this wasn’t the case. It’s still a far cry from a minor league if you give flat-rate stipends (e.g. every scholarship player gets $50k/yr) instead of having a semi-free market salary system.

  17. 3
    1

The whole NIL rollout is a total mess. Huge failure of leadership by the NCAA. They should have been the ones making the changes and passing the state bills where it was needed. It’s basically just free agency and not thought out all.

    • I’m in the hotel business, work for four hotels in the Portland Area, one in San Diego and one in Palm Springs – we re definitely back, occupancies are consistently in the 80-90% range at all of them, even the desert in the summer. So much pent up demand for leisure travel, which will be great for us through September. Our biggest problem, like everyone else’s, is staffing – all but one hotel in our group essentially just doesn’t rent all of our rooms, because we can’t finds staff to clean rooms. That seems to be picking up a little, as unemployment offices are now starting to verify that people are actually applying for jobs; plus we have raised starting pay to $2 – $3 more than minimum wage, which we should’ve done a long time ago.

What will be the big test is in the fall – waiting to see if corporate travel comes back, groups and conventions. If we don’t see that, we’ll be hurting again. Looks like it might be trending that way, but nowhere near what it was 2 years ago, with so many companies allowing staff to continue to work from home.

    • I never doubted travel was up. But tourism and travel is only about 7% of the US economy in the US and 3% of the global economy. Consumption is 66%. So if we’re not consuming, we’re not recovering. Again my observations are about the downtown/shopping areas where I live. I don’t see anything close to 2019 levels of economic activity at this point.

      • I think the downtown areas are suffering from all of the empty office buildings and people working from home becoming the more common.
For instance, my office isnt even asking us to come back till late September, and it’s been that way since March 2020. The area it’s located has taken a hit because of the reduced commerce in that area. But I doubt the same people have just stopped purchasing goods or spending in general. It’s just been displaced away from the business districts.

        • That’s a good point – downtown does have commercial office buildings, and those people are likely not in them/wandering the streets. It could be that. I hope so. I really would like to live through a roaring 20s!

    • My brother lives in Portland, and he said he’s seen more out of State plates over the past few months. Any idea why?

His theory is they’re working from home people who decided to check out Portland.

    • I do, and if we land him we should get Donaldson too.
But it will be a battle. I think Arizona and Colorado are the main competition. I dont think oregon/michigan are serious in their recruitment of him but could string things out if he’s waiting to see if a spot opens up for him at those schools.

      • Might want to mention that Michigan has brought in three 4 star and three mid-high 4 stars. If he joined them it would be battling 6 dudes for 4 starting positions only counting 2 classes.

Oregon has three 4 star and four mid-high 3 star in the last 2 classes.

Arizona has ten 3 star and 4 transfers.

Colorado has four 3 star with 1 transfer.

Beavs have two high 3 stars.

I’d say Colorado and Arizona would be the competition if he doesn’t want buried.

  18. A buddy of mine is a real estate agent in the PDX area, and I asked him about this a while back. From what he’s seen 9 out of 10 houses sold are to out of state people (California/Seattle/China). That’s what is causing all the bidding wars for houses. Don’t expect to buy unless you can offer 30% above asking, and even that isn’t enough sometimes.

      • 4
        1

So has the fact that much of California and Seattle have become a place you no longer want to live in.

          • Noticing that that some houses in Bend are reducing sales prices. Not crazy low, but probably were shooting for the moon.

          • We’re so beyond reality it’s nuts. Current lul is typical for real estate but also driven by timber prices.

There is usually a July/August lull for family housing as most people moving with kids try to do so right after school ends.

When prices in bend get too close to what you can sell for in the big cities they tend to plateau. Usually it’s like 80% cost of big city then people slow down.

  19. Rivals has a defensive depth chart prediction up. It’s pretty much what you would expect aside from having Reichner as the backup DT and Hardge as a backup CB. I thought Reichner was a DE and was listed at only 253 and I thought Hardge was more of a safety. I definitely don’t think we want to have Reichner playing DT unless he’s put on some serious weight.

You’re doing a great job embodying the criticisms you always lob at people that use stats to try to prove their points.

-No one knows how NIL will change the sport, so the respondents have no real idea how they’ll act in the future as a result
-Your sample size is very small if you throw out the ‘same’ responses
-Your Twitter followers probably tend to be cynical of college football already because of your own brand, so the responses are somewhat self-selected

        • 1
          1

No, and that’s part of the problem. The question is overly simple, so there’s no way of knowing what information their responses actually contain.

Is it a “yes, because I think NIL will create competitive imbalance?” (dependent on an assumed outcome) Or a “yes, because I believe on principle that college athletes shouldn’t be allowed to do Instagram ads?” (not dependent on an assumed outcome).

Plus, 13 responses is too few to draw meaningful conclusions about the future of college football.

          • 1
            1

There’s not 13 responses, and it doesn’t matter “why”. The poll asks what they’re going to do, not why they’re going to do it.

        • That’s fair…I am concerned about competitive imbalance and how it will affect the Beavs. Could care less about athletes monetizing themselves.

But I honestly don’t know where we’ll end up competitively. Gotta think it hurts our chances for top-end elite talent, but maybe we pull extra high 3* and low 4* talent from the midmajors to compensate? Money is all relative- we’re poor in the PAC12 but well above average relative to the 120ish FBS teams.

The transfer portal will continue to be huge for us as well. HS recruits may flock to the schools that offer the most money, but a year or two of riding the bench (limiting their college $ as well as NFL potential) will drive most of them to move on to more attractive depth charts.

I do think it’s bad for us, but there’s a ton of unknowns and we need to see how it all shakes out.

  20. Velling looks like a good commitment. Michigan and Utah offers; 247’s scouting report is glowing. He’ll need to add weight, but he has the height to handle it.

  21. Updating this post from earlier in the week:

Might be a good time for a recap of the 2022 class:

    Current verbal commits(10 total):
    QB-Travis Throckmorton
    RB-Damien Martinez
    WR-Cole Prusia
    OL-Luka Vincic
    OL-Jacob Strand
    OL/C-Dylan Lopez
    DT-Quincy Wright
    LB-Melvin Jordan
    DB-Carlos Mack
    TE- Jacl Velling

So if we’re taking around 20 players in this class, we’re still looking at around 9-10 more players to add. You’d have to think a few will go towards transfers, so I’ll cut that down to 8 more actual true freshmen.

(Notice these are almost all defense guys)

Potential athletes still being recruited by position:
WR – Juan Wilson, Quincy Burroughs
DT – Mason Graham (has recent crystal ball, so seems likely)
DE – Sterling Lane, Mathias Malaki-Donaldson, Isaiah Ward, Takari Hickle, Kyle Thompson, Hunter Lysholm
OLB- Shakaun Bowser, Harrison Taggart, Aisea Moa, Andrew Savaiinaea, Connor Kelley
    ILB – Kord Shaw
CB- Jeramiah Derby, Zeke Berry, Lorenzell Dubose, TJ Hall

      • Great kid, lives/plays in The Dalles, dream schools are USC, Washington, and Oregon from what I understand. Loved his visit to Corvallis though, but I think he will go with with one of those three. If USC and UW don’t offer, and Oregon cools due to other commits, we might have a legit shot.

    • Thanks for the great information and thoughtful speculation, always appreciated here (and by Nemec).

I hope they do get two DTs. Looks like about a 50:50 split of offense and defense.

There’s a lot of speculation about the affects of NIL on recruiting and talent distribution (or lack thereof). And I do think in the long term the game will become increasingly less competitive and interesting. But I also think teams with legitimate, well-coached 3*+ talent, playing as a team, with three functional units of offense, defense, and special teams, can compete with the teams with higher recruiting rankings. NIL could end up being a distraction for young/immature players who can’t well manage the NIL opportunity and it could have negative affects on team chemistry. We’ll see.

      Thanks for the great info.

    • I’m guessing this means Quincy isnt 100% committed to Cincinnati? Could we possibly snag another one of their decommits? (Other one being Jordan)

    • I should have included WR Xavier Van on the WR short list.
Not sure how many WR we’ll even take in this class. So far we have Prusia, but that position is one where we’ve had no problem addressing talent/depth via the portal.

  22. Just ran across Kord Shaw’s track times. Junior year he hit 11.27 in the 100m and 23.26 in the 200m. Those are pretty good times for a junior and a dude his size. He’s had less than 10 had less than 10 races in high school so his starts are probably really bad. He’s one of those guys that has better in game speed than track speed.

  23. Random morning tidbit. Getting an in with Duncanville is huge. Beason and Wright both come from that program. 2022 class: 8 players receiving P5 offers. (Wright)
    2021 class: 7 players with P5 offers
2020 class: 5 players with P5 offers. (Beason)

If these guys have success developing into NFL talent that pipeline could be massive.

  24. Looking at the half assed ratings Velling has on 247/Rivals. Rivals gives him a middle of the road 5.5 3* rating with no actual national/state/position rankings (meaning they havent actually reviewed him and just gave him the Beaver bump) and then 247 has him as an 86 3* and no composite rating.
Sure seems like a guy who hasnt been reviewed thoroughly by anybody. Watching his film, he has the body and skills of a 4* tight end though. He’a big enough to play as a true freshman. I’d imagine if he did go to Michigan, he would be a 4* commit on those sites. Could end up being a top 2 or 3 prospect in the Beavers 2022 class by signing day.

    • 1
      2

Agreed. I looked back at film for Musgrave, Milbourne, Spencer and Byrne and he looks far more physical and complete. I prefer his film to Loveland who is hard to guage with the level of competition.

Overman is definitely faster and has better receiver skills but his blocking isn’t as dominating.

Otton is the only recent guy we have had a shot at who looks better on tape.

      • i said they had an actual rating for him, but rivals doesnt. Plus no composite rating on 247 despute the beaverbump 3* on rivals to average it against.

        • Usually when there’s no composite it’s ESPN not rating players. I believe the composite is from 247, rivals and ESPN combined rating.

  25. 6
    2

If we can land Graham I think 2022-2023 season is when our defense starts a huge jump in production. Just projecting we will have the option for a heavy DL where you have Graham (6’4 290-315), Sio (6’3 340-370) and Wright (6’5 300-320). That’s 1000 lbs for an offensive line to try to get out of the way while still trying to prevent lanes for the ILB and EDGE. That would be an absolutely devastating situational package.

    • I really think they can take another step this year with the addition of Schad, a healthy Gumbs, and the experience of the players in the system and amount of veterans on the team. They will definitely need to stay healthy tho especially on the D line. It will be interesting to see how much Sio plays if at all and how he adjusts. I would think they could at least use him in short yardage and goal line. They must like how he projects there because the coaches mentioned how well he was playing on offense before the switch.

FWIW I think PFF had Hodgins, Rawls, and Sandberg in the top 10 highest rated players on Defense last season which was pretty surprising. Hopefully Schad can join them and be the difference maker. If he can push the pocket and force the QB out towards the OLBs I think the sacks will go back up and in turn improve the pass D.

      • I think this year will be a marked improvement. I would say this year our defense will be not bad but not good yet. If we see more solid weight gain for defensive players on the fall roster our run D may be adequate.

        • The numbers wouldn’t be nearly as bad if they were able to get off the field on 3rd and 4th down. I wonder what the per play avg. Was against them? I don’t recall them giving up many big plays but the inability to get off the field and force turnovers allowed teams to sustain long drives.

          • 1
            1

Ever since they switched to bend but don’t break the big plays really reduced. The dbs keep everything they can infront of them. The big difference for a step change will be when the lbs have good predictable tackling lanes in the run game and the 3 linemen take up 4 O-Line forcing faster protection breakdown.

I think we see an improvement from DL in terms of pressure this year but in 2 years I think we will have the personal to really get after teams.

          • I’m a fan of the Ben’s don’t break D. It’s really hard to drive 80yds without having it stall out, ruining it with a penalty or commit a turnover. If I remember correctly they were a pretty good red zone Defense too. Always nice to force a field goal instead of a touchdown. Now just need to start forcing more turnovers.

I really like the corners we have right now. I feel like they have a solid 4 corners capable of starting right now in Wright, Austin, Jones, and Forrest. Wright is supposed to be better than his brother and if that’s true I think he’ll have a big season and be a guy that can shutdown most teams best receiver. The big question mark is the safeties. I think most are solid tacklers but not great in coverage. Julian is probably the most capable against the pass aside from Grant but I think they prefer him at Nickel. If the pressure is better this year and I think it will be with Schad and a healthy Gumbs I think we finally start to see more turnovers.

        • I will say Smith’s teams seem to really improve as the season progresses. Hopefully with all of the experience on the roster they can start the season stronger than in the past and won’t have to go through as many growing pains.

    • Big news, and he has elite baseball tools but looks raw right now. Reed will be a good litmus test to see how Canham and the rest of the coaching staff can develop players.

    • Could be really good for us. Hopefully his recent injury is something he can bounce back from and doesn’t become a recurring issue. It certainly seems to have hurt his performance this season.

  26. Spent last couple days in gym in Irvine… my son is playing in an AAU tournament. Scotty Pippen in the house yesterday watching his son play… he’s good. Today Wayne Tinkle making his rounds today. Big Tinks has a presence. Kids know who he is, very approachable, exudes confidence. Great 8 appearance gave him a little pep in the step. Seemed he was honed in on a kid playing for Seattle Rotary… athletic guard, junior to be. Need to find out kids name. Stud.

  27. It doesnt mean a ton, but it means something. Noticed Kord Shaw’s instagram profile has a pic from his recent OSU visit

    • He plays 1A ball in Washington, plus doesnt have more than a few seconds of film available from the 2020 season
From what I’ve gathered, he’s a high motor guy amd has D1 athleticism, but is very under the radar.
Sounds like he was the defensive MVP at some NW camp this offseason and that impressed those in attendance, and OSU was in attendance.

Nevada is the only other offer so far.
We liked him enough to have him come work out down at OSU in June and that earned him an offer.

    • Not sure what flyer means but he only has an offer from Nevada. We offer tons of guys under the radar and other schools tend to jump on them later. We are first 3 offers on so many dudes that end up being high 3 star or better.

      • I used “flyer” from my fantasy sports vocabulary. Lol. Essentially a “stretch” pic that you feel could be due to breakout, etc. Flying under the radar if you will. Thx for the clarification on Hickle NB!

  28. Another revision of the recap post from last week:

Might be a good time for a recap of the 2022 class:

    Current verbal commits(11 total):
    QB-Travis Throckmorton
    RB-Damien Martinez
    WR-Cole Prusia
    OL-Luka Vincic
    OL-Jacob Strand
    OL/C-Dylan Lopez
    DT-Quincy Wright
    LB-Melvin Jordan
    DB-Carlos Mack
    TE- Jack Velling
    DE-Takari Hickle

So if we’re taking around 20 players in this class, we’re still looking at around 8-9 more players to add. You’d have to think a few will go towards transfers, so I’ll cut that down to 7 more actual true freshmen.

(Notice these are almost all defense guys)

Potential athletes still being recruited by position:
WR – Juan Wilson, Quincy Burroughs, Xavier Van
DE – Sterling Lane, Mathias Malaki-Donaldson, Isaiah Ward, Kyle Thompson, Hunter Lysholm
OLB- Shakaun Bowser, Harrison Taggart, Aisea Moa, Andrew Savaiinaea, Connor Kelley
    ILB – Kord Shaw
CB- Jeramiah Earby, Zeke Berry, Lorenzell Dubose
K- Keegan Sneedon (non-scholarship most likely though)

    • If we get Graham and at least 1 more DE I feel like this will be the biggest class along the lines I’ve seen or at least in recent memory. Am I right or is that just me? I suppose before the 3-4 we had 4 DL so that might’ve evened things out but I’m happy to see this. The lines are really where you need to get young guys and mold them especially at OSU. Generally need to find the right guys that want to be here for their whole careers because most won’t start contributing much until they’re upperclassmen. It really is an investment getting them to reach their potential through practice, and building strength and size but if they transfer all of that is lost.

      • I don’t think we have a class in the past that compares well. Riley got LOTS of proj cts on the DL and OL. It worked out much better on DL probably because we only needed two serviceable DT. He did recruit some great DE, we always had some good ones in the program.

        • Fwiw, I was told Brandon Huffman’s next ranking will have Hinkle around an 86 3*.
I think that would put him in the top 4 recruits for OSU in this class. Might be less of a project than people think.

          • Looking at people we offer early and then the stars they end up with I’m not surprised at all. We find a ton of talent, idk if we are great evaluators or if we just pay attention to who someone else is evaluating.

          • Ya I think that also has to do with them being lazy and trying to keep the recruiting coverage industry going. The classic beaver bump!

          • Well we I lt get them to three stars. Look at the 2023 class and when we offer. There’s plenty of 4+ that we offered early.

          • 2
            1

I get what you’re saying. I thought you meant when guys had no ratings and then they commit and are suddenly 3 stars.

    • Nicebeav How many more DEs do you see them taking? I think you said that the Hickle offer was because you thought they might not like their chances with Lane. Are you feeling good about any of those guys at that position?

      • Thinking some combination of 2 OLB/DEs besides Hickle.
Of Lane/Bowser/Donaldson, I like pur chances with Donaldson the most. The remaining guys I would consider plan B types that we probably wouldnt be in a rush to have commit

  29. @BleedOrange: I jumped in the way back machine and here are some of the great DL classes. I am leaving off people I don’t remember having any impact. Lots of years 1 one or 2 stars but a weak class overall like Victor Butler and Bill Swancutt

1999: Dwan Edwards, David Lose (now a coach on the team), Eric Manning, DeLawrence Grant, Ledaris Jackson
2007: Kevin Frahm, Jesse Fifita, Latu Moala, Tonu Tuimalealifano
2010: Thomas Molesi, Mana Tuivailala, Scott Crichton, Fred Thompson (Died sophomore year)

1999 is definitely the year to beat, that was a hell of a class in retrospect.

    • Yes! I remember the president’s were such fast physical DEs. That defense had a nastiness and swagger to them. I would like to see more emotion out of the Defense and see them looking amped.

That team with Slade Norris, Victor Butler and Stephen Paea was great but I think all those guys were different recruiting years. Still think for the level of talent OSU is capable of getting a 4-3 makes more sense.

      • I agree – think that’s a really good point. And I would add: it’s a more DT-friendly system that gives them more opportunity to make an impact. Seems like that would be a major boost to recruit arguably the most difficult position.

      • Yeah they were. I think Slade was a walk on. He was a huge recruit out of Jesuit but broke his leg senior year and had to redshirt to recover. His recruiting went from a top guy in the state to nothing.

        • Exactly. The 3-4 were building is closer to 3-DT, 2 freaking tall DE and two ILB by our past roster standards. Good 3-4 D’s average about 315 lbs on the line. I can’t remember us ever having 4-3 DE above 270 and most of our DT were 285-300. Guys like Dylan Wynn, Bill Swancutt and Scott Chrichton would have been EDGE in our current system.

    • Poor Fred Thompson. About 10 years already since he passed? I was looking forward to see him play, but of course the bigger loss was the human loss. He’d be about 30 now.

      • He would be 32. He was in my class at OSU and we actually had some classes together. He was one funny dude. He had a grill with big canines and was the nicest guy in class.

        Was a huge loss.

        • I remember after he passed OSU posted a short tribute video of him, and there was a shot of him in the stands in the stands with the other students, wearing an OSU football jersey, biggest smile, just looked so happy…

    • Right? That whole class was loaded. 31 recruits and 14 of them I don’t even have to look up to know they were role players. Edwards, Grant, Barnett and TJ both had NFL careers.

  30. Bryant Salgado gets drafted. Be nice to have him come back as well. Pitching could be dicey if all the drafted players left on top of Washburn leaving and any other in the portal that I’m not aware of.

    • The younger guys coming in will be fine. We’re going to be crazy thin with lefties as it stands, but we’ve got a lot of hard throwing right handers coming up.

  31. OT: RE Glenn Taylor Jr. signing w/MBB, not a surprise I take it (?), cane NiceBeaver or others say if the expectation he’s a game changer, or contributor?

4* according to 247, 22nd best SF in nation. Looks like MBB is getting more athletic?

    • Tinkle said they expect him to push for playing time based primarily on athleticism and defense, pared with what I interpret as serviceable shooting. He’s probably the top freshman in this class.

  32. 6
    3

MLB draft is in the books. We had 4 guys drafted. 7th, 9th, 14th and 19th rounds. Two of those guys were Canham/Dorman recruits.

I think it’s pretty safe to say we overachieved last year.

I like how the federal government keeps moving the goalposts on how they measure inflation.

Current CPI is at 5%, but if measured the same way as in the late 70’s, it’s closer to 12%.

But of course, they can’t admit that.

      • 2
        1

Man, I thought that said “Golf Addict”…now it makes more sense.

You’re correct, but people argue the 70s over-measured inflation. ShadowStats still tracks using that method. I personally think it was more accurate.

    • 2
      2

How much is inflation if you go back 2 years though? Year over year inflation is going to factor in the pandemic deflation.

  34. Wilner picks OSU MBB fourth next season, behind UCLA, swoosh, USC.
He thinks there is enough coming back to offset the departure of floor leader Ethan Thompson. The more complicated calculation, he says, is:
“…whether the NCAAs should be viewed as a harbinger of regular-season success. After all, the Beavers were an average team last season for all but the final three weekends.”

    • Interesting to see the tourney run giving us some benefit of the doubt. I don’t think we’ll be clearly better than either Arizona school.

Dashawn Davis is going to be a really important piece for us.

Sounds like the Blazers hired the same team that “vetted” and did all “due diligence” before hiring Billups as the OSU Board of Trustees did when they hired the last school president. My goodness, if you say you did a thorough investigation and don’t even lob a call to the prosecutors who were investigating the case – who DID you talk to?

Glad Oregon Public Broadcasting didn’t “take Olshey’s word” on it. He should be gone.

    https://www.opb.org/article/2021/07/13/portland-trail-blazers-head-coach-chauncey-billups-1997-rape-sexual-assault-allegations/

I don’t have a problem with the Billups hire (see quote below from the prosecutor who looked into the case before it was settled – and understand again, the Blazers never contacted him – so they wouldn’t know how he feels). Like I said – for Olshey to say they thoroughly vetted this, and to apparently NOT have done so – is such a bad look.

“The Blazers’ investigation also did not contact the current district attorney in Middlesex County, where the alleged rape took place, or Thomas Reilly, the former district attorney who led the investigation into the 1997 allegation and declined to press criminal charges.

Reilly, who served as Massachusetts attorney general from 1999 to 2007, told OPB in an email that he believes Billups.

“Mr. Billups has consistently said that any acts between him and the woman involved were consensual,” Reilly said via email. “I believe he is telling the truth because the evidence obtained during the course of a very thorough investigation backed him up … no doubt about it.”
Reilly declined to go into any detail about the case or to describe the evidence that led him to the conclusion that Billups did not rape Jane Doe in November 1997.
“You and your colleague can continue to work this story until the cows come home but you will not be able to change the bottom line … .” Reilly said in an email. “Mr. Billups is telling the truth about the incident you refer to. You called me and I’ve tried to help you but enough is enough … case closed.”

    • 1
      1

I’ve posted this before, but for managers, hiring is one of the most important things you do. I think the act of contracting out the candidate searches and vetting process is probably over-done these days.

Leave it to the Trailblazers to screw this up (on negative perception), fall flat on their face in Billup’s introductory news conference, and piss off an incredibly loyal franchise player with the hire. Small market teams have few chances (Oklahoma City), and can’t afford screw ups like this.

      • Can’t disagree with the importance of vetting. But it’s not like Chauncey is a first time hire for an NBA team so he has a 25 year track record of never messing up again. In addition he is lauded by everyone who knows him or has worked with him. I didn’t hear one negative story other than a case settled 25 years ago. To me as someone hiring, I would take “HIM” at his word as all the evidence points to him being a standout person for his team, community, and family.

The Blazers were out of touch with their progressive fan base. They should have saw this reaction coming as its been par for the course for the city of Portland. That being said, Dame is over the fan base and I don’t blame him one bit. After all he has done for the community and as loyal as he has been, you would think folks wouldn’t jump on him. Sadly, a lot of blazers fans have that progressive mindset and don’t believe anyone can grow from past mistakes. What’s especially troubling is Billups is a black man being held down. When the fan base didn’t say a word about Jodi making her security where speedo’s and other weird stuff. That only occurred 5 years ago and no one said a word. With this cancel culture I just want consistency. All I see is picking and choosing favorites, no outrage for people they like but they go all out for someone they don’t.

        • Jodi Allen made her security wear speedos?

That might be the funniest thing I’ve read on this blog.
Outside of “Tinkle on hot seat makes fog that smells like pee”

          • Haha! You can’t make this stuff up! So the Speedo thing was for a “fashion shoot”? Who the hell does that with their security team? Then it gets better, she also had them committing federal crimes lol. The rich live by different rules in America.

“Billionaire Paul Allen and his sister Jody Allen have settled with two people who were in charge of their personal security teams through the Vulcan corporation. Terms of the settlement in early November were not disclosed.

There were accusations of Jody Allen’s sexual harassment of the security staff and smuggling and bribery involving African ivory and penguin skulls in Antarctica.

The Allens denied any wrongdoing. Vulcan general counsel Dave Stewart said Tuesday, “Neither Paul Allen nor Jody Allen engaged in any illegal activity.”

After two years of bitter litigation, the pair behind Vulcan Inc. – Seattle Seahawks owner and billionaire philanthropist Paul Allen and his sister, Jody – have settled with two former security heads who accused their former bosses of smuggling, bribery and sexual harassment.

“With unsubstantiated allegations of ivory smuggling and illegal drug use swirling, the Allens and the former heads of their bodyguard detail reached a settlement earlier in November. The settlement, the terms of which neither side was willing to disclose, came as the lawsuit was poised to head to a King County jury late this year.”

Another former Vulcan bodyguard, also a retired Navy SEAL, said Jody Allen bought tight, revealing swimsuits for the security detail and asked the men to “do a fashion show.” Vulcan contends that any conduct resembling that described was entirely innocent and occured in the spirit of fun.

“I learned from team members that they believed the owners were asking them to participate in criminal conduct on their behalf, including procuring marijuana for Paul Allen, bribing foreign customs officials, smuggling, and brokering deals for the purchase and transport of artifacts outside legal channels,” Benoit said in a sworn statement to the court.”

“Luggage packed with giraffe bones could mean trouble for Vulcan CEO Jody Allen and her brother — Microsoft co-founder and Seahawks owner Paul Allen — as lawsuits filed by the siblings’ bodyguards proceed. The allegation – that Jody Allen tried to sneak home the bones while on safari in Botswana – is the most concrete claim made so far by a group of former Vulcan Inc. bodyguards who’ve sued both Allens and their firm, which was founded by Paul Allen, who remains the company’s chairman.”

    • Nemec is almost as passionate about that story as he is about pumping up his ducks.
I guarantee if Kobe were still alive and they had hired Kobe rather than Billups, he’d love the move and be ignoring the Blazers process.

        • it’s interesting that Boise State seems to be the most common team landing players who seem like potential OSU commits.
I was wrong on Katin Houser/Cage Kasey/Roger Carreon and they all went to Boise (at least temporarily)
and then Huffman predicts Graham to OSU before it gets flipped to Boise.

          • Yeah, but if you have one in every class, that’s 5 on the roster at all times. Being #2 in the class could be an easy negative sell for another coach.

          • I don’t see it mattering that much. Unless we have a true monster at DT (kinda hard for us to get) then these guys could play any position on the DL.

          • possible Boise State coaches saw the log jam at OSU for this class and used it to negative recruit the OSU destination.
Graham had been on the fence for awhile, so not a big surprise he chose Boise.

          • I would think a transfer with multiple years of eligibility would be more ideal for spacing out the positions player’s eligibility. Maybe someone with 4 to play 3.

  37. Jacob Strand now rated on 247 as a 3 star 81.54 composite. Seems like a real dark horse. Wasn’t really recruited by other schools yet but like nicebeav mentioned they rushed him on campus and had a private workout with coach M. They must really like something about him and I probably trust coach M as a talent evaluator and coach more than anyone else on staff.

    • Not really. July is pretty much the only chance for staff to get in some vacation time, plus ita the dead period till July 24th. So i expect it will be somewhat quiet the next week or so.

Things will pick up a little maybe in early August.

That’s not to say they wouldnt take a commitment between now and then, but i think recruiting activity will be a little quieter than it’s been the last month+

  38. 3
    1

Just noticed on 247 that Carlos Mack, Velling, Vincic, Throckmorton and others got slight boosts to their ratings making us 6th in the pac 12.

  39. So nicebeav you mentioned you like our chances with Donaldson and that Bowser, and Lane were plan B. So are you saying they prefer Donaldson over both? It looks like Lane is slightly higher rated. How good do you feel about Donaldson?

    • I actually think of all 3 as Plan A guys. Lane and Donaldson more as DE players and Bowser more as an OLB, but all 3 could player either position somewhat interchangeably, depending on their weight in a given season. Hamilcar played OLB, but often lined up as a 4th DLineman in the past couple of years.

      https://youtu.be/iYU-80IQu3U

I view our chances of landing Donaldson the highest of the 3, but am not ruling any of those 3 out at this point.
I would call Lane the highest importance of the 3, because I think if you land Lane, you likely also land Donaldson.
But that doesnt mean you couldnt land Donaldson without Lane.

Long story short, if all 3 wanted to player here, I think we’d take them all. I consider the OLB/DE/Edge position to be the most important role in our defense.

Currently crystal balls have Bowser to KState, but they also had Graham to OSU before today, so that could change.

      • 2
        1

I could see the OLB position being the most important but I could also see ILB or DT being the most important. We had a slew of talent and depth at OLB and saw that they didn’t do much without a DT that can push the pocket. Also saw what happens when our top ILB went down.

        • Atleast we should be solid at ILB for a few seasons. Speights, Mascreanas and Gordon should be a productive group for the next two seasons. We also have guys from other classes entering the depth chart this year like Walling, Miller and Erhart. Overall the depth and talent level of the team is really improving across the board. Should be able to have high rotation on defense without serious drop offs.

DT is really the only spot we are razor thin.

          • Ya I know smith said miller had been good on special teams and Earhart had a good spring from reports. I haven’t heard anything about walling. I don’t think any of them were very big time recruits but I know Miller committed early and pretty much shut down his commitment. Did any of them have P5 offers?

Safety seems thin just because no one has proven to be a playmaker aside from Grant. Arnold and Oladapo are solid tacklers but lack great coverage
ability so far and Julian seems like more of a coverage safety. There is a lot of potential there and hopefully more familiarity will help bring it out. I know it’s kind of the QB of the secondary and are responsible for calling coverages and getting the secondary lined up right. Also saw on a depth chart prediction that Hardge was listed at CB which was odd to me because I thought he was more of a safety.

How disappointing has Watson been? I feel like he was a fairly decent commit with a WSU offer yet never cracked the two deep. Also didn’t manning and cotton have multiple P5 offers? I know some of it could be the scheme change but safety recruiting has been pretty poor at producing on field productivity.

OT: RE NIL, a Miami football fan who is allegedly a millionaire and owns mixed martial arts gyms says he’s going to offer all 90 Miami scholarship football players a $500/month stipend to advertise his gyms over social media. He’s got “too many Gator and Seminole friends that have been (expletive) on me for the last 20 years, and I want to reverse it.”

“Lambert’s offer to the Hurricanes has not been accepted yet. The total could rack up to $540,000 this year.

“There are improper ways of fans supporting their players, and now there is a legal way to do it,” Lambert told ESPN. “And if there is a legal way, and you can dot the I’s and cross the T’s, I’m going to do it.”

Lambert has also started a corporation, called Bring Back The U. The company will aim to have support from local businesses to in hiring players as spokesmen. ”

    Ahh, living vicariously…

        • They won’t be able to walk it back though. Once the stars are taking in millions they will start sitting out and shit if they try to change the rules to something non-horrorific.

Considering the NCAA had been considering pay for okay for 20 years their ideas and execution are dumb dumb dumb.

          • The NCAA’s lack of progressive leadership is why football is in this situation. They’ve known for years this was an issue and could have had a role in shaping the response to it. Not that they’ve cared for many years about preserving competitive balance in money sports. The need for them becomes increasingly questionable, particularly in their current form.

      • 1
        2

But I’m sure all payments will be above board and transparent!

Phil Knight probably had his first semi in many years when NIL was announced. “Oh, what’s that?!?” [looks down].

It is becoming another form of professional football, as others have suggested.

    • Why wouldn’t every Florida, FSU, FAU, USF, UCF fan just decide to stop utilizing this dude’s line of MMA gyms?
Similarly, why would other Pac12 teams still use Nike gear?

No sense in helping your competitor.

Any sense of whether any of the drafted pitchers other than Abel will leave?

I would think Salgado could improve his stock quite a bit by staying. He has really good stuff, but hasn’t shown he can control it consistently. Not sure the ceiling is as high for Burns or Watkins.

    • Salgado is going pro. Think he could’ve done with another year but best of luck to him in the new venture. Could be a rough year with all the arms leaving and relying on mostly young players for pitching. Was already high in hit batters and walks with the more “mature” arms in the rotation.

    • 2
      2

I’m mostly just annoyed with the shit system for it. It’s just 100% open season vs managed in a way that benefits sport as a whole. Obviously I’m a socialist libtard but without some sort of profit share system it’s just going to be 25 stars at the richest donor bases racking in millions.

    • There haven’t really been many substantive announcements yet (which is kind of surprising given how much buzz there had been for the last several months and how there was apparently soooooo much pent up demand). I’m still reserving judgment.

    • I am not seeing how it really changes OSU’s standing in the college sports world. I mean yeah we are in a small market no doubt but we are also the only show in town so to speak. Though I do think it ultimately comes down to who has the shadiest boosters willing to game the system. But the question I am still coming back to is if there is any way to different between someone profiting off their NIL and someone that is it’s getting paid to play football. Like getting paid 10 times the fair market rate for something, is that allowed?

      • Yeah. I’m not sure the concept of NIL is regulatable. Would the NCAA even have the legal ability to impose caps? Sounds very murky. “Fair market rate” would be heavily influenced by a lot of factors, including the market the player is in, their skill level, and how high-profile their position is.

I think the solution would have been for the athletes not to be able to market their NIL, but for the schools and/or conferences to give them a piece of the overall pie. Say 30%, split evenly among the players. I also would have much preferred a system that paid every player the same. The stars are going to make their big money in the NFL – it’s the guys that don’t have that in their future that really could use a boost.

  42. OT: just saw that Cal leads it’s football series w/OSU 37-35. In a few years , OSU could take the lead. Would it be the only league foe OSU would lead in a series?

    • We lead Colorado 6-5 and we’re ti d with Utah 11-11-1.

We’re 8 games back on Arizona and 13 on WSU. After that it gets very grim.

      We’ve best USC 9 times…yikes.

  43. 8
    1

Seems like one of the things OSU fans could do to help their team out recruiting wise is to really focus on blowing up social media for recruits and current players. Would imagine having a big following plus an active fanbase getting you exposure could go a long way towards helping convince players they could have NIL success even in little Corvallis.

It would take some coordination and fans would really need to be active, but I could see it helping.
Maybe we should all set up hundreds of bot MABA accounts to inflate our numbers. Huge numbers, like you’ve never seen before.

Garden update: even better than last year. Looks like not a single plant will be lost this year. No mildew or pest issues. No hail (thank god!).

The stash: Cherry tomato, beefsteak tomato, Marzano tomato, red and white onions, beats, eggplant (still small), peppers (small but looking great), corn, zucchini, cucumber, cabbage (pretty weak but we might get one…experimental crop anyway), dill, parsley, basil. Should be some amazing eating in a few weeks. If you guys were closer I’d invite ya’ll over for an AB harvest!

Compost surprise: four pumpkins! My neighbor grew some organic pumpkins last year. He gave us a few for Halloween. My lady threw them in the compost bin…

  46. FYI, I’ll be camping again this weekend and likely have no internet, so twitter feed will be quiet for a few days.. Have a good weekend ABs

  47. I recently watched schad’s jc highlights and he’s a man amongst boys. Hopefully he can do that as a DT in a 3-4 at the power 5 level. If he could have a dominant season it could possibly help with recruiting like it has at the LB position.

I really like how this team is looking. The one thing I think it’s missing is a ball hawking safety. That seems to be a position they’ve had trouble recruiting aside from the jc ranks. It’s a shame Riley got hurt i was hoping to see something out of him. I feel like the depth everywhere on this team has a pretty solid 2 deep besides safety where there isn’t really even any clear starters.

What do you guys think? What are your biggest concerns on this team?

    • Obviously concerned about DT, but I think that issue can be mitigated thru scheme adjustments.

Low key; WRs have me thinking. At the college level it’s critical to have a go-to guy. I’m not sure we have that dude. We have lots of talent across the depth chart, but who is the guy you focus on when you NEED those yard?

      • 1
        2

Agree E. I’m hoping it’s Beason. He had some clutch catches last year just simply by holding onto the ball. Will be key though who is throwing the ball. Is it accurate, a tight spiral, etc. TE’s need to have more receptions.

      • 4
        3

I’m hoping Schad can be the guy at DT and then rotate in Skelton. We’ll see how Sio does with the position switch and how much he is used and then you have Wright who can play in 4 games and still red shirt. Hopefully that will be sufficient and they can stay healthy.

At WR I like the talent there and think a guy will emerge depending on who the QB favors. I think there were reports of Beason being targeted a lot but injuries hurt the development there. Harrison was emerging in the last few games with the most catches in The games he played so I think he could be the guy too. How quickly can Tongue and the PSU transfer learn the playbook and be ready to heavily. Tongue has interesting size not only tall but thick.

    • @bleedorange..
Schad was a good not great player at Minnesota. He will be an upgrade. The telling thing is that Fleck brought in a couple grad transfers and Schad saw that his playing time would be diminished.

      • I figured as much but sometimes players thrive in other systems and coaching. I think he’ll be more than serviceable and make a difference but don’t expect him to dominant or anything. He moves really well for his size. Wright looks very slow in his highlights in comparison that was the biggest down side I took away from his film.

    • 2

It’s official…..Beavers baseball can be laid to rest. Hiring Canham instead of Yeskie was like hiring Jimmie Anderson to replacer Ralph Miller. It was fun while it lasted. I guess I’ll have to root for ducks baseball now.

      • Yes. Nothing says ‘end of the program’ like a bunch of guys signing professional contracts including 2 specifically recruited by Canham after he was hired.

        • These are a guy everyone expected to leave and relievers. It’s not like suddenly we have all these innings to cover and no arms to do it.

          • My concern is the arms we have are gonna be young which could translate into a few rough years. Losing Abel, Washburn, burns, Salgado. watkins, and mulholland (those are the ones I know of) plus Claunch left..idk, could be rough sailing for a bit. Haven’t gotten anything that I’m aware of in the xfer portal either so I think it’s definitely fair to have concern over the pitching. With a more mature staff we already were top 3 or so in conference in walks and then you add in like 80 hit batters…now you’ve got a younger staff to top it off.

          • 1
            1

My concern pretty much matches yours; not only the loss of the guys you mentioned but the fact that (if nothing changes) those young arms will be coached by Dorman. Maybe that isn’t a negative but, based on what we’ve seen, it sure isn’t a clear positive!

Hard also to overstate the loss of Claunch, particularly with a young staff.

  48. PDX Beavs- I’m looking for something to do with my kids in town. Are the more well known parks (Forest, Washington, Mt Tabor, etc) a safe bet, or should we be concerned about homeless populations there?

Also curious about the Burnside area around Powell’s.

OT: NIL at Texas A&M apparently nets two football players $10K/ea for interviews on a fan site.

“They say everything’s bigger in Texas.

That seems to hold true after the announcement Friday that Texas A&M football players Isaiah Spiller and Demani Richardson are set to earn $10,000 each for exclusive interviews posted to Aggies-centric website TexAgs.com. The deal for the interviews, which are sponsored by GreenPrint Real Estate Group, has been reached under the new name, image and likeness rules for college sports.

“As Aggie business owners, we embrace any opportunity to support local student athletes and the Aggie community as a whole,” GreenPrint owners Geoff Myers and Randy Hightower said in a joint statement posted to TexAgs, which is not affiliated with Texas A&M University.

“With the collegiate athletic landscape rapidly changing, GreenPrint is thrilled to partner with TexAgs and these two young men in this exciting new endeavor.”

    • OT: RE NIL, it seems likely the school alumni that do the more extreme NIL contributions will be mostly SEC & B10 schools and especially those programs still trying to trade on their glory days (Texas, Nebraska, Tenn, Miami).

I am curious to se what Knight/Nike come up with for the Ducks. I suspect they’re researching the laws and coming up with the broadest, but defensible, applications, and going to market it an approach to distinguish the ducks. Cristobal and staff are already doing a great job of recruiting with the “resources” they have, it will be interesting to see if they can put together an elite defense in the context of today’s game.

Also, what about Notre Dame or BYU? Anyone think they’ll take advantage of NIL in ways that change their programs?

      • 2
        3

What if the beavers came up with a really cool throne players could sit on with orange lighting and lots of outfits. I think that’s better than any NIL deal.

  50. Sounds like it was a pretty uneventful weekend recruiting wise:
    -We offered a 2023 TE
-Current commits are trying to peer recruit Ryan Otton
-I realized there’s a good chance Kord Shaw will be a mission candidate.

Anything else I should know about?

  51. Is this the season the Beavers finally defeat Stanford?

“OSU v. Stanford previously: Cardinal have a one-sided edge in this series at 59-25-3. It has widened significantly since 2010, as Stanford has 11 consecutive wins over OSU. Three of the last four could have gone either way, however. The Beavers lost 27-24 a year ago to Stanford, 31-28 in 2019 and 15-14 in 2017.”

If Jefferson were still playing, I’d be highly confident in a Beavers win. Perhaps a team approach with Baylor, Fenwick, Collins (this will be a late season game and he could play and still RS) will provide the advantage.

    • Man, that’s a crazy stat. Stanford is solid but hasn’t ever been elite. They don’t have a home field advantage to speak of, and they always seem beatable. It seems like there’s consistent game-changing anti-Beav officiating in those games, right? My impression is, for whatever reason, the refs are always a big factor vs Stanford.

We’ve beat the Ducks twice in that span, and should have had a third win (2013).

      • I definitely remember the year where they didn’t ever call offensive PI even tho it was excessive and basically just allowed their receiver to box out our players in the endzone time and time again.

I would be very surprised to see Collins play much at all. The RB room is very deep and Lowe is essentially the same type of player. I would think you give him a year to develop his skills and body.

      • Been to an Orange, Fiesta, and 3 Rose bowls in that time. “Elite” is open for interpretation but dang most fan bases love to have that.

        • 2
          1

Ok that’s fair, I didn’t realize they were that successful over that period. My perception was off.

Still a brutal and surprising streak.

          • 3
            1

It goes to show you how hard it is to change people’s perception of your program. I think I heard an analyst talking about it and how it effects recruiting awhile back. Something about it needing to be sustained and doesn’t effect recruiting until after about 3 successful seasons.

    • In the pre-game wedding ceremony, minister/play-by-play guy Josh Worden pointed out how Eli Shubert did not give up a home run in 18+ innings for Lewis-Clark State, then no HRs in 18+ innings with the Raptors.

After that highlighting of Shubert’s streak of not allowing a HR, he went out and “gave up a 2-run HR to Nick Oakley.” Hope he has better luck with the marriage!

Who the fuck is Bryce Young?!?

And dies Saban really know that, or just marketing Alabama on a new way?

Way until Phil Knight starts investing in NIL. The organized scale and approach will make others look like, well, amateurs.

      • Phil Knight already did with Kayvon T a couple weeks back. They announced an NFT artwork collaboration deal with Tinker Hatfield for “six figures”.
Have to imagine this is Saban’s “oh, that’s cute” response.
Oregon’s eatablished star gets a 6 figure deal?
Well at Alabama we have true freshman making 7 figures.
It’s like 7 minute abs, man!

  52. Carlos Mack’s Rating keeps on moving up in 247 as he’s up to a .8411 Composite and 85 for the other ranking, and also Takari Hickle’s has been bumped from 81 to 86 by 247.

Are you vaccinated seaver? Im guessing yes. So you then would be a follower of what exactly? Big pharma perhaps? Billions are being made so good for them because they surely have your best interests at heart, right? Or just big powerful government? How bout a follower of Lord Fauci the “all knowing”- see how easy it is? I choose against the vaccine because why get it when 99.7% survive the damn bug. If you got the shot you did it for your own personal reasons. Maybe you believe they are really looking out for you….. good for you.

        • 2
          1

It’s not ALL about YOU getting it — but about YOU getting it and passing it on to the vulnerable. Should get an anti-body test, if no show, then you should get the vaccine to protect others and stop the spread, stop filling up hospitals. If you have pre-existing conditions and choose to not get the vaccine, then that is still up to you, at least you know better by now — still not going to save from the peer pressure to get vaccinated for herd immunity. Just don’t be an idiot anti-vaxxer conspiracy theorist (not saying YOU are), I have plenty of family members who are and their arguments against the vaccine(s) always flounder and lead nowhere. It will catch-up to them sooner or later! Think of it this way, if nobody took the vaccine, the hospitals would be full again — do you really want that?

          • 1
            2

Shhh. Let all the conspiracy theorists and trumpers skip the vaccine and die. That’s better for the world. Sadly their cult leaders told them to get it because they are all dying.

          • Anybody taking the vaccine is supposed to die of cancer, according to my brother— which gives him a wonderful OUT since a lot of people die of cancer anyways….albeit way later in life. I worry more about his kids, no polio, no rabies, or any other vaccines. Thinks Bill Gates wants to control/kill everyone.

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University expects all students, faculty, staff and volunteers to be fully vaccinated before the start of the fall semester. As the state’s land-grant research university, WSU has an obligation to serve the public good and promote the health and safety of its communities. The science clearly shows that the COVID-19 vaccine nearly eliminates the chances of death or serious illness related to a COVID-19 infection and is a critical element in protecting public health locally and worldwide.

Washington State University respects the right of individuals to decide whether to get vaccinated. WSU has instituted an exemption process for those who have medical or non-medical reasons for not receiving the vaccine.

Those requesting an exemption will be required to wear a mask and maintain physical distancing and may be subject to other public health measures when on WSU property.

I meant that this is the beginning at the high school level.

If Texas and Oklahoma go SEC, next best alternative would be a wild Texoma pod of Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU and Oklahoma State. Get into same markets with enough strength to sustain. More national balance if we had atleast Texas or Texas and OU ideally, but these teams can compete and we’d have strong Texas and California pipelines across the Pac-16.

      • 1
        5

Big 12 ADs and presidents are on a Zoom call right now to discuss situation as UT and OU going to soon let them know will not be signing extension of GoR beyond 2025. Texas and OU invited to meeting but declined. There is a spot for everyone if ND stays independent for now. Then could have 4 x16 model for Top 4 conferences. Would start by 2025 or sooner. Next wave could be around 2037 when ND might join ACC and 4×16 top leagues consider becoming a 4 x 20 model. That would be a better time to add Boise St, BYU, or UNLV in my opinion. Now you have to secure a Texas presence and a solid pod of newcomers that can compete nationally.

    • Will see what I can learn. I noticed the other day he had shared a story from a duck fan about potential upcoming commits for oregon. Could have just been for the attention or it could be for the accuracy of the post.

      • I’ll put it this way. As of this moment, if he’s committing to OSU, it will be news to OSU. But I have no clue where he’s committing and cant rule OSU out just yet.

I’ll continue to watch the Beavs, but I won’t watch anything else, and if the Beavs players are all millionaires it will be hard to watch them even. Nothing against pay for labor, but I feel they’re compensated fairly already via free education, food, etc. I’d have been more in favor of a fund put together to help any players who were injured and it effected their ability to earn after college.

“If research is the issue then it’s silly to be anti vax in the first place”

Nice try. If science is the issue why have mask mandates or push vaccines in the first place? Virus is 500 times smaller than the fabric of masks, 99.8% survival rate and all coverage is fear driven emotional propaganda, featuring either coercive or persuasive methods rather than individual choice/freedom regarding the vaccine. The vaccine will become the scarlett letter or the yellow arm band for distinguishing the members of society who are to be despised.

Researchers like Fauci? No thanks, 50 year government bureaucrats who manipulate mass portions of the population for personal gain aren’t really scientists or researchers of the noble kind. If you trust any of the government/pharma “science” on these things, you are a fool and have closed your mind to reality.

At this point, anyone not suspicious vax, let alone anti vax is rational given the flipfloppy messaging and lack of liability and full immunity for big pharma regarding the vaccines.

Would you go on a roller coaster if you knew the amusement park has full immunity for the last 30 years from any accident/responsibility? This is essentially the big pharma/vax producer situation. Immunity since 1988 for vaccine side effects…

Youre right, just a big conspiracy and only the smarties figured it out.

I’m done arguing with people who get their information from pundits making millions from their audience of zombies. No evidence or arguement can convince people.stuck in propaganda world of anything.

99% of people currently dieing in the US of Covid are unvaccinated. That holds true for nearly every major disease. I will happily listen to people who spent their lives studying a subject and their collective wisdom over people connecting dots with string and pizza cheese to find the pedos and looking for their next great outrage. I’ll just stick to the common reality.

          • Nuc- please give link that gives us the the facts and info that 99% of the current deaths from covid are the great unwashed or not vaccinated. I call bs on that statement.

          • 5
            4

Also nuc and seaver- if this virus is so deadly and the whole population needs the magical juice then why is the current knothead in the whitehouse have an open borders policy? Tens of thousands have crossed the border and many have been flown to places all around the country. Pretty sure most of them have not been vaccinated. Its all bs. If you die within a month of being confirmed of having covid than for sure it was that, no matter the other health problems you may have had. But if you die within 72 hours of getting the shot- no way it was the vaccine. Again bs.

*we don’t actually really care about them. It’s all virtue signaling.

          • “Virus is 500 times smaller than the fabric of masks”

Anyone can have common sense and the ability to reason through information regarding any particular topic. If Nuc had his way, no one could comment unless they are an educated professional in that particular field. Higher education and wisdom are not the same thing.

Interesting how Nuc makes a broad declarative statement regarding vaccines, then when presented with a thoughtful response, he returns with a borderline scorn and mockery of my statement. Nuc may want to try and converse before mocking. I presented a few cogent points pertaining to the lead voice on vaccines and Nuc chooses not to rebut.

Fauci is a political animal and a 50 year bureaucrat, not a scientist. He isn’t a doctor, he isn’t a reasearcher anymore either. He pays people and funnels money to labs for those things now. Fauci is responsible for the gain of function funding and research done in the WUhan lab. He is also a patent holder for the vaccines related to the covid viruses. He is both funding and profiting form this entire “pandemic” and I think Rand Paul has brought Fauci to the point of admitting he funded the WUhan lab, and he has himself admitted to encouraging and leading gain of functioin research on the COvid viruses. Fauci is a fraud, and anyone listening, believing, following his dictates is a fool of the first order.

In context of vaccinated and unvaccinated: should we just begin dividing society over vaccinations? Nuc isn’t going to agree to a societal punishment for those who refuse to get the vaccine I hope. Do I have the right in Nuc’s America to choose to not get the vaccine without being shamed and ridiculed? I take full responsibility for any outcome as a result of that decision. It seems as though that isn’t going to be an option within a short amount of time. Somehow, there are those who desire that I simply capitulate and submit to their concept of “safety and patriotism”.

I will not surrender my rights over your fears about safety. No government agency can promise safety and it is a fools errand to allow elitist bureaucrats the opportunity to try such a thing through mass manipulation. It is surprising how little HIPPA laws apply when speaking about vaccinations. It should be a private matter but everything in the culture is forcing the personal decision about the vaccine into the public arena for all citizens. I think this is inherently un-american and dangerous.

            My question?

If you’re vaccinated, what are you afraid of?

If its true that 99% of the people dying of covid are unvaccinated as suggested above, then wouldn’t it only be the “maga idiots” dying of covid?

Where’s the problem proggies? Isn’t that what you all want anyway?

          • 3
            2

No, I don’t want people to die or cause massive health burdens on themselves or their families when they get sick and need help. I also don’t want them infecting kids under 12 or people who have health disorders that make vaccination less effective or can’t get vaccines at all.

See I live in this weird place where I care about things past my own nose. In this place there is even more options to life than attacking and destroying things I don’t like.

          • 2
            1

Nice of you to pat yourself on the back Nuc. Your the only one who cares, we get it. Children are hardly getting the virus or getting sick and ending up dead from it. If they do die its because of pre-existing conditions, just like adults. And yet lets just put an experimental drug into our children.

          • I was responding to WSN. He asked me a question and I was commenting on the tone he expressed. Here I’ll break it down for you so I can pat myself on the back more.

            1) What am I afraid of: people dieing and unfair burdens that destroy lives.

            2) If 99% are dieing are unvaccinated then wouldn’t it just be maga idiots: no, a percentage will be vulnerable people and children that they infect.

            3) What’s the problem proggies: Attack and insult like a typical bully.

            4) Isn’t that what you all want anyways?: No it’s not because this is normal life not a war where the only option is destruction of enemies.

Hope this helps you to understand my comment.

To your child comment. They aren’t getting sick or dieing currently. The more circulating virus the more chance there is for a variant that does kill kids.

          • Rochelle Walensky, the head of the CDC said about a week or so ago that “fatalities from available data, December 2020 through June 2021 were 99% unvaccinated. Again, lies and BS. Everyone was basically unvaccinated at that time leading up to the peak in March of this year. The delta variant was not even part of the equation. But repeated enough times by her and Fauci then its got to be true right? Wake up. Here is a link to think about

Ohio I’m done arguing with you. You literally complimented me on discourse last week. Anyone can have an opinion but my problem is when it’s based on non-sense instead of actual research or expert consensus. You live in a reality driven by validation of your opinions and will stretch to any extreme to connect the dots. Anyone who validates you is a good guy and anyone who challenges is evil and part of the machine or a sheep. I don’t want to argue with you cause you make no sense and your only moves are what aboutism and demonization.

Look in the mirror and repeat that to yourself Nuc.

You lean on expert opinion and expert consensus. I am suspicious of them all at this point based on their owns words and actions. Experts are no longer what we thought them to be, noble, altruistic and impartial. “Experts” in government and big pharma are revealed as the political hacks and opportunists of our generation and will apparently cause hundreds of thousands of deaths for their own profit/power.

As for you comment about complimenting you last week, sure it was an enjoyable discussion. But this one you made your generalized judgement and then mocked the response. It isn’t on me if the dialogue looks different to you. You began with a broad brush , and took a lame personal swipe at anyone who may disagree with you.

            2

Makes sense. It’s all a conspiracy and you can’t trust the people who are experts on the subject.

When I need religious advice I read star trek scripts and consult with Dumbledore because I can’t trust the bible and pastors.

          • What’s interesting is when folks throw insults because they don’t agree. I think we all need to take a step back. I saw some good points from all of you in between the insults. For me I am not Anti Vax, but am skeptical about the vaccine. Especially at my age. That’s my choice. As far as immune compromised people go, it doesn’t affect them as much as you think. They live their lives everyday like we did in lockdown. A cold could kill them, so a new virus doesn’t change much for them. I know several people with conditions like this. I think the difference for me is even though I am unsure on the vaccine I continue to wear a mask. The virus is real but is not a threat to a healthy person like me. Why risk heart inflammation for a vaccine that may not prevent reinfection? It’s hard for me to understand how others can force me to inject something because “they” think it’s the right thing to do. Plenty of times in history where hysteria led to bad choices.

          • I should mention that I am waiting for phase III trial results. Biden and other government officials are actively trying to circumvent this. Which IMO is suspicious. Try researching these topics yourselves and it brings new perspective on the subject. I think the most concerning thing they are trying to circumvent is this nugget:
“Enforces “stringent conflict of interest requirements to ensure individuals involved in data analysis and decision making” related to Biologics License Applications lack such conflicts with the vaccine manufacturers”

            https://www.medpagetoday.com/special-reports/exclusives/93035

          • I have zero problem with waiting as long as you take precautions (like masking) for yourself and others. That’s just being conservative with your health and taking responsibility for your choices.

          • I have zero problem with waiting as long as you take precautions (like masking)

That’s what I’m doing. So far the evidence is pretty overwhelming that the vaccine is safe, but I’m waiting until October or so since I have a blood disorder (something similar to anemia).

          • 1
            1

Smart for sure. I’m still uncomfortable with the speed.of testing but having minimal immune system I need all the help I can get. I’m already on meds with unknown long term health effects, I would dead in 1-3 years without them, so I’m already kinda over that mountain.

I’m vaxxed and I still wear masks and mask the kids because I can’t really know how effective the vaccine is for me without a very expensive antibody test. I did have a pretty rough reaction to the vaccine so likely pretty set but it’s alot of uncertainty.

          • My pops has blood disorder/clotting issues too. So after talking with his doctor he has decided not to take the vaccine….at least for now. He being very influenced by Trump, was very confused and didn’t know who to believe, but glad he at least got some opinions on it. I see no problem with that kind of decision making — it’s the decisions based off of convenience, ignorance, misinformation and stubbornness that are killing people right now as we speak. Thanks for being honest Angry

          • I’m immunecompromised and run a support group with over 1000 active members. I can assure you this has been very different. 7 members of my group died of Covid, that we know of, despite taking every precaution they could.

          • I think it’s silly to not include the immune compromised people in vaccine trials and the govt didn’t. They only make up 2.7% of the population but they can carry the virus for way longer and it spread it to more people. So it’s interesting to hear folks talk about unvaccinated people being the risky ones. There are other spreaders too. That sad part is they are most at risk to die from it as Nuc mentioned.

          • Yeah the liability of drug testing makes it so you can only get in drug trials with bad health if the drug is for your condition. I get it you don’t want to kill people on accident bit it would be nice if they were tracking the data better. It would be great if I could look up my condition and the meds I’m on then see how effective the vaccine has been so far. They just kinda bundle all compromised people into a basket that includes Autoimmune diseases, cancers, genetic disorders and environmental induced conditions and don’t even pay attention to the meds were on. Someone on chemo has significantly different immune function than someone on a tailored med to inhibit a specific cytosine.

  57. I would take TCU, Baylor and/or Oklahoma State in the Pac 12. I don’t think folks who are looking at things from an athletic perspective realize how snooty the Presidents of the PAC12 are for academics. Some of those schools are not going to cut it from the academic reputation standpoint which will impact who gets invited. That is why folks who always say we should add Boise St have no idea what they are talking about. BYU maybe, Boise St no way.

The PAC needs to get to 16 and secure its status as one of the P4s. I think they would be best served moving right after the SEC for more thunder. If they don’t we will be do susceptible to being whittled away. FOX right now is interested in rying to pump up the B1G property. They will talk with USC, UCLA, Oregon, UW and Colorado. Not good as an Oregon State fan who with a 16 team conference could instead have a permanent NW pod and potentially even playing every original Pac-8 team every year.

Texas markets and recruiting can actually slightly improve the on field performance with what is left and still allow our next TV deal to be worth just over 40 million per school. (Around 42 million per is my guess) when reworked in 2023.

Best option is a heavy Texas presence (3 teams). Could either be Tech, oSu, TCU, Baylor or swapping out Baylor for Houston if the Cali schools are against Baylor. Houston is one of the best recruiting beds and is a Top 4 TV market. Also depends on who the other invitees want. This conference atleast would have a. Ton of fun and entertaining games that are competitive and not having to deal with the Whorns may not be the worst. If we don’t move and secure that P4 status and guarantee our survival, I think we are going to stay vulnerable. Think is best for the respect we get nationally to make a Pac-16 the best we can with strong recruiting and TV markets/exposure in Texas and hope SEC gets a little stale with top teams dominating. Could see that making Pac-16 a conference quite a few more people nationally enjoy watching the games of, and some earlier CST time zone games will also help that exposure. Also think the 4 x16 model has built in possibilities like 16 pod winners auto qualifying for a 16 team Playoff. Could icrease the leverage of non-SEC P4 if the Pac-16, B1G and ACC work together to limit SEC power from getting too extreme.
