31.Jan.2011 Recruiting Roundtable

We're in the dead period until Wednesday, which means coaches can't make contact. The kids will have time to ponder their future, which is why we're starting to see decisions trickle in.

So far:

1. Akeem Gonzales to the Beavs.

2. Rudolph Fifita (0-star DE) is our J.C. defensive tackle in this class.

3. Earl Foster reaffirmed his commitment to Houston last night.

4. Darryl Paulo has decided on Washington State.

5. Juda Parker is Colorado unless there's a last minute change of mind.

6. Vivii Teofilo wants to sign with Oregon State, but his family has pressured him into an ASU commitment.

7. Kyrie Wilson was dropped by Oregon. He's a darkhorse to sign.

8. Samson Kaleikin, a offensive lineman from Hawaii, is in the mix. I think the Beavs will offer him once they officially strike out with better prospects. I think he'll sign after the Wednesday deadline.

#4 probably means Lopa accepts his greyshirt offer to Cal, so cross him off the board for now.

All of this can change in the next two days, but as of today it's looking like we sign the status quo, and strike out with the entire foursome from Grant. People keep assuming Rahmel Dockery is a lock. At one point he seemed to have high interest, but if true, what is he waiting for–a Washington offer? Do we really want someone so obsessed with the Huskies? I find it off-putting and sad. He has grade issues anyhow.

So who do we have to cling and hope to this year? First, there there is Davon Moreland. Some "in the know" insist he'll be a Beaver, but Moreland hasn't spoken a single word about Oregon State. He has academic issues, so at best would be a greyshirt, and more likely would be a sign & stash at a Junior College. That leaves Todd Peat Jr as the lone big fish to accept every egg from our basket of hope. How do you like that mixed metaphor? No doubt in my mind he'll wear an orange shirt on signing day; an orange shirt WITH A PITCHFORK ON IT.

    What about:

    Torian White
    Cody Kurz
    Patrick Onwuasor
    Michael Thomas
    Thierry Nguema
    Walton Taumoepeau
    Justin Rogers
    Kendrick Williams
    Keaston Walker

    ?????

If Robins really wants to earn his scholarship, he’ll be in Parker’s ear until Wednesday.

White dream is to be an actor–he will sign with an LA school.
      Kurz has no interest.
      Onwuasor–I don’t think we’re recruiting him anymore.
Thomas–cooled on the Beavs after they took 4 great WRs.
      Nguema–never heard of him.
      Taumoepeau–Beavs cooled on him…grade issues.
Justin Rodgers–does he exist? There hasn’t been info on him in ~8 months. He could be dead.
Kendrick Williams–I don’t know who this is.
Keaston Walker–I don’t know who this is.

We should probably add the Linebacker who de-committed from Oregon to the list. He could wind up a Beaver. I’m drawing a blank on his name.

haha, The Oregon LB didn’t de-commit so much as his offer was pulled so Kelly could offer someone with more stars by his name.

He’ll be Dominic Glover Part II

I like Nguema, but does he like us? The kid is REALLY fast, and he’s a baller. Plus, he has a CB’s name. Check out the play at 2:15.
        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doRVhx7Gqlc

News is silent on Justin Rogers because his father is Kenny Rogers. Google that name along with Cam Newton. Now tell me a) that Tuberville and Texas Tech know nothing about Auburn and Kenny Rogers, and b) we really want the kid. Justin shouldn’t pay for his father’s sins, so maybe Mike Riley is one of the few coaches who can bring him in without any perceived… ummm… goings on.

Kendrick Williams is a 6’4″, 320# OT from Spring Texas who is said to be a teddy bear off the field and a monster on it. Big Baby is his nickname. I haven’t heard much about him since early December, so maybe grades are an issue.

I have heard that Dockery might be an academic casualty. And I’m certain that he’s a Husky homer. I can’t blame the kid for wanting to go to school three blocks away from home, especially if he grew up a Husky die-hard. I would like him that much more because of the chip that will certainly be on his shoulder.

Three things stand out in this article.
      1. Storey to play WR at 6’2″, 220#? I know he’s a great athlete and a better football player, but his natural position is OLB. Why waste time at a position that is already deep without the WR’s coming in?
      2. As noted, Zimmerman possibly to S? I thought he was coming here because he wanted to play WR. If he wanted to play S, he would have had his choice of schools.
      3. Peat’s list of schools doesn’t include NU? Start the suicide watch on the N blogs.

I emailed Cliff Kirkpatrick, and this is what he told me:

“Quality DBs are afraid to go to OSU, I’ve heard, because it plays man-to-man
much of the time. A lot of guys might be great athletes, but are mentally afraid
of getting burned. So, only guys who have the right mental strength come to OSU
    as a DB.”

    …and he assures us:

“OSU is loaded with DBs on the roster at the moment. You might be worried about
Hardin, but if he can’t do it there are Rashaad Reynolds, Keynan Parker and Ryan
    Hanford waiting in the wings.”

I really like Cliff. Though I may not always agree with his assessments, he will respond to anyone’s email promptly.

I find it difficult to believe that “quality” db’s are afraid of man-to-man coverage. I think quality DB’s love that sort of approach. I don’t think quality db’s like being responsible for man-to-man coverage when they don’t get get to play the ball. The way OSU’s db’s are coached, its usually TAC (tackle after the catch), and several passes defensed per year.

CB int’s have been few the last several years. I’ll bet Dockery’s 4(?) this year, are an OSU CB high for interceptions since before the Insight bowl – that was a slow year for INT’s. I think there was a CB int in that game that the announcers said was the first of the season or something like that, it really struck me.

OSU hasn’t had a lock-down, interception-grabbing, don’t-throw-in-my-direction corner in quite awhile, and I think “quality” db’s are more attracted to Az or Cal. And I think that’s why OSU’s db talent pool is thin – quality db’s aren’t coming here.

If you’re a quality receiver, you don’t go where the passing game isn’t featured.

And if it what Cliff heard is true, if your system discourages talented players, why not flex a little and change some things up? It took forever for Banker the Stubborn to insert additional DB’s into the situations. If mixing in some zones attracts better athletes, not adding some zones is beyond stubborn and approaching stupid. Besides, you take a young QB, rush him and have him throw into zone coverage, he’s going to throw ints. (I think that’s how Cal’s DB’s make their living). Throw against man coverage where the DB is not even looking for the ball, you risk an incompletion.

Cliff has poor logic, and he always stands up for the coaches. It’s really hard to believe great corners are afraid of getting burned. Are great guitarists afraid to do solos? When you are great you want the challenge and spotlight on you. I think the reality of the situation is the DBs watch scheme, and they listen to other coaches, who probably tell them Banker doesn’t allow the OSU CBs to play the ball. That makes a lot more sense than a great player being afraid of a challenge. That logic is as delusional as believing turning your head to play the ball slows you down (and if I concur that it does, then it also slows down the WR–he too has to look back for the ball).

Cliff’s comment is absolutely homerish. Who would believe that kind of crap? Given the recurring theme of our inability to recruit quality corners (a 3-star corner would be a huge prize for us), i’m guessing that other Pac-10 coaches are selling our scheme against us, regardless of whether it has any merit, and our coaches are doing nothing to counter the argument.

After reading Kerry Eggers article I remain surprisingly optimistic about this 2011 class! Now, I know it remains to be seen, but who else is thinking positively, glass half full kind of mindset? I think we might all be surprised, in a good way after signing day. Regardless of how high this recruiting class is ranked, we will really see how good our coaching staff is this next year! I mean their backs are against the wall, and they have a lot of obstacles/challenges to overcome. We will also see just how hungry the team is after last year’s disappointing season. A win at Wisconsin is just what this program needs, it really would be HUGE for OSU’s future! Now, I’m not predicting a win. I just think it is beyond time for a monumental win (specifically non conference road game) for this OSU program. Mike Riley desperately needs to win the Civil War, or things could get real ugly next year. I’m curious to hear what OSU’s goals & objectives are for the 2011 season, I really want to hear Mike Riley say “Our goal is to win the Pac-12 Championship, and of course to beat the ducks!” Let the players know from the 1st day of spring ball, it’s business time!

I am beginning to think that their are more good defensive players in this class than originally thought, so I can agree with the glass half-full.

However, we have seen what the coaching staff can do with their own recruits and backs against the wall. Riley will probably be conservative in playing RB’s (seniority over potential and talent), and Riley will once again wait for the team to “find its identity” rather than proactively forging one.

Any real hope of a competitive game at Wisconsin seems unrealistic. More likely, the best scenario is a TCU-like loss, where OSU is inconsistent, never in the driver’s seat, and the game isn’t as close as the score. We keep waiting for the huge noncoference win against a highly ranked team (LSU, BSU, TCU, etc) but they never materialize, I don’t see it at Wisconsin, where OSU will struggle to contain their running game.

Juda Parker to CU. He says he appreciates that we named a county park in Coos County after him, but he’s going to the Rockies instead.

Smoo has read and referenced this post. Some don’t like that Moreland may be an academic casualty out of a sense of reality. But true Smoo thinks it’s sour grapes.

In the same breath, Smoo argues amongst himself about the admissions process maybe killing their chances with Moreland (a la Darryl Jackson). Note: This is not the Texas school that didn’t allow dancing on campus until recently. That’s the school in Whacko.

Apparently Brady Hoke used his new digs to re-recruit Moreland, and he almost got him to visit this past weekend. But they came in too late, and I think a June Jones in-home convinced him not to go to Michigan for an official.

I have heard that Devon will pull a hat trick Tuesday night. His decision is between the Ponies and the Beavs. Either way, he’ll be wearing black next year… right Smoo?

    • JackBeav says:

No hat trick for Moreland. I just talked to my friend in LA, and he wondered where all these rumors came from. There was never any recruiting battle for him. There was only a question of whether or not he would be admitted, and his friends all told him to come here if he didn’t make it.

June Jones is a part of the whole Mouse Davis coaching clan, and he’s connected to Mike Riley, Jay Locey, Seumalo and Cav as friends and co-workers. So he probably suggested OSU as a back-up in case Smoo admissions failed for Devon.

But I’m told the only coaches who tried to poach him were Fink and Weasel. He was always Smoo, and OSU coaches knew this.

So what’s with all the hand-wringing over his “decision” in the last week?

      Hmmm Rivals?

No great loss. I’m surprised Wazzu took a flyer on him. There’s potential, but he played himself out of any offers he might have received despite his early attitude issues.

It’s time to start thinking about who might red shirt. OL/DL targets should be Jordan Ellisen, Matthew Devereaux, Odin Coe and Nick Huelter. TE/LB/FB prospects should be Michael Balfour, Cole Naone and Brycen Stutzman. Kyle Gardner turned down a Portland State offer for a walk-on at OSU according to the G-T. I’ve always liked him, so I’m happy with that. But most everyone else on the list will have offers from Air Force or Directional U as well. I think a couple of them are worth actual offers from us.

Oh… and Manuia Ioane just has to be on this team. Cav would have field day with a kid like him.

There are already a couple kids coming, if I recall correctly. The LS from De La Salle… and a P prospect?

If our coaches turn over every rock, why haven’t they found Kamalani Kaluhiokalani yet? The kid is raw, but what Hawai’i kid isn’t? He’s quick, agile and really strong. In other words, he’s a freak at 6’1″, 300#.

I do like the look at Samson Kalekini, but it makes me wonder sometimes if our coaches really do turn over rocks. Or do they rely on the “pipeline” method of finding kids? Kalekini has a lot of upside, but he wouldn’t get a look if Darren Hernandez didn’t have some kids already here.

They don’t turn over every rock. The list is predominantly from California. It shouldn’t be that difficult with electronic means and OSU grads all over the country to find good players. Granted, recruiting trips are expensive, so it’s easier to concentrate in a particular geographic area, but to say the OSU/Riley, etc., turn over every rock is an exaggeration,.

Meh. Does it matter if I’m happy? Apparently, a fan’s happiness (usually found in winning) isn’t the highest priority for Beaver Athletics. There’s one truth to this class- if a player from this class is more talented than someone that “sure worked hard” or was a “neat guy”, they will have to wait to play. And regardless of when these guys play I project the same mediocre results because Riley believes its okay to lose.

Buddha also had one about holding on to anger like it was a hot coal. I just can’t remember it off the top of my head. I only remembered Dickinson versus Pope because I wrote a paper about it once upon a time.

Here’s another from Pope I had to look up:
“A person who is too nice an observer of the business of the crowd, like one who is too curious in observing the labor of bees, will often be stung for his curiosity.”

If you get a chance, read his Essay on Criticism. You’ll find many common quotes used today within that work… “To err is human”… “A little learning is a dangerous thing”… etc.

Pope wasone of the most brilliant morons to ever live.

What a relief…just when I began to think we’d run out of feel-good stories to tell about walk-on’s making it big!

And before he gets too excited about being a walk-on fullback…we had a fullback on the field an average of 2.31 snaps per game in 2010. (that’s just a guess, but if you carry it out your guesses to the hundreths it looks more credible).

Actually, the kid looks like an athlete…and we always need more “gunners” on kick-off. Although our kick-off team was pretty well rested for most of the season last year, so we didn’t really need to dig into our 2-deep.

Kyle Gardner goes to the same high school as my kids, has been a classmate and teammate of my oldest son, and has been over to our house a lot. I’ve seen him play football for four years. I can speak from personal knowledge about Kyle.

Kyle is a good, tough kid who is probably too small to play linebacker or fullback for OSU. Nonetheless, I expect he will become an outstanding special teams player for the Beavers (especially covering kickoffs and punts). Kyle is fearless, very strong and solidly built for his size, and hits like a ton. Great attitude, too, along with a nose for the ball. Expect Kyle to make some big hits and cause some turnovers on special teams for the Beavers.

Given that he’s a walk-on — and therefore won’t cost the Beavs a scholarship — the Beavers (and their fans) should be happy that Kyle Gardner has chosen OSU.

I really think if we can find a starting LT for next year and a guy to replace Remmer’s when he is gone our O-line will be great. Linekhol (sp?) was solid but he played injured for much of the year. Go back and watch film, he is creating all kinds of space early in games and you can see him clearly wearing down. I got to think a healthy replacement at center will be an upgrade. Plus if the coaching staff can realize Phillip is naturally an OG we will be going from our O-line being a weakness to it being a strength in a couple of years.

I don’t see how this isn’t a big deal. Go watch tape of this guy, there is no way he doesn’t make an impact next year, he’s Cliff Harris X5. Aside from that, this is a big off the field story. Thomas grew up in SC’s lap, has been committed to them for months and all of sudden a last second visit to Eugene and he’s a Duck. Even with SC’s sanctions this kind of stuff doesn’t happen. We’ve grown accustomed to seeing most of the top players in Oregon go to college out of state but that doesn’t happen in Southern California. SC has had a vice grip on the 5* talent in SoCal for the past decade. The few that got away from SC went to premier programs across the country and none of them were committed to SC for essentially the whole recruiting year like Thomas was. Thomas going to Oregon is so much more than just the Ducks getting a great player.

The De’Anthony Thomas situation is earth-shaking…USC has not had a real recruiting threat from anyone in the P10 in my lifetime. The “9” have always got to fight over whoever ‘SC didn’t want. This one sign is a game changer…and that’s not a good thing if you’re a Beaver.

I’m with BeaverBill w.r.t. something we could use to indicate which messages we’ve read.

    Angry,
The new format sucks….you should go back to the wordpress format where
    responses keep shifting
    over to the right
    until they
    look
    l
    i
    k
    e

    t
    h
    i
    s
    That was awesome.

I think the appeal of the big city school is gone. Too many people watching their every move. Towns like Corvallis and Eugene are almost safe havens for these guys. OS just needs to make the next step to close. We need more Civil War’s like 2009.

Agreed. I’m sick of hearing how it’s a miracle Riley gets anyone to come to little ol’ Corvallis. I think the size of the town or lack thereof being a deciding factor is wildly overstated. If you had to spend all your time hanging out with the permanent residents of Corvallis, sure, I could see some hesitancy. When you go to school somewhere though, your social network is the other 20K kids that live, learn, have fun in the same environment.

Everyone get to bed. The LOIs start rolling in at 7am.
I have a post scheduled to go live at 5am pacific time; in there we can discuss all the signing. I’ll be at work much of the day, but I’ll try to post updates.

Regarding Keith Mcgill…that guy’s going to be a Beaver….BCooks, Jaswha James, Poyer, and even Calvin Haynes are recruiting pretty hard on his FB. Love it…

Jaswha Power James: “Come to Oregon St. and you’ll look back and be like damn I really won a National Championship”
