The latter was expected once the numbers were in a month or so ago. This was just a formality. Ostling was the one still waiting on the numbers themselves.

what are the realistic odds that Hasiak makes it in? 50%?

Seeing that he wasn’t here in the Spring and has a history of poor grades, I will be surprised to see him here in the Fall. If he does get here you better play him immediately because I am not sure if he can stay in.

Tribune reporting that Isaac most likely to play Center. With Juice and Enger at Guards, and Kelly and Phillipp at Tackles. If that holds true I would like to see Gavin Andrews or Wenreich in there for Kelly.

Enger seems better suited to tackle. If Philips wants to play on Sundays, he should demand a switch to guard.

Enger and Phillipp should switch. I don’t know why the staff can’t see this.

Isaac at Center? I mean, that’s not bad, but I’d rather see him at DT. On offense, I think his best position is guard. Still, Issac, Andrews, Phillipp, Enger is a nice core. Need to upgrade Kelly big time. I agree that G. Andrews is the play there. Fall will tell us more. I know right now, though, that Collin Kelly cannot be the starting tackle if we hope to win games.

In the tribune article it was noted that OSU is adding the bootleg play back into the playbook this fall. I am pumped about this, it is a play that can effectively neutralize a weak offensive line. It can also take advantage of a potent run game (if we could develop one). Those two things are not mutually exclusive either.

Did someone say this kid’s 100M time was 11.08? Were they impressed by this?

Haha, I know right. But the bootleg shouldn’t have ever left the offense. After two straight runs up the middle. A completion on 3rd and 8 is actually quite doable in the bootleg set. A guy like Katz should’ve ran this quite a bit because he had the speed to tuck and get it with his legs too. A layer route over the top would given him multiple options and while he froze a linebacker with his legs. Also, you could move Jenkins (or any h-back from motion) down to fullback on 3rd because he can run a trap and can catch the ball out of the backfield on the flat route. Man, I wish our coaches would think of this stuff.

This is absolutely related to their appearance in the state. When I was in high school (not that long ago) I could’ve stated a number of reasons why I wouldn’t have wanted to play at OSU. First, the program “wasn’t that good”, despite only being a few years removed from the Fiesta Bowl. I would’ve cited the academic strength of the California schools, the tradition of UW and the hot girls at the Arizona schools.

Now after having attended OSU, I realize the obvious academic strength of the institution and that there were a surprising number of extremely attractive women at OSU. The problem is that, many of the schools have something to hang their hat on when they market to high schoolers. What does OSU have? Agriculture simply doesn’t cut it with high schoolers.

Science, Engineering and Technology. OSU is the best public university in the state for these and they are fields that drive economies as evidenced by OSU having the highest wage earnings of the public schools and clearly higher than Oregon. Instead of marketing ourselves as forward-thinking scientists and engineers that have access to cutting edge technologies we have more of a slow and stale image because of too much Riley and BDC influence. I hope the school never gives another coach 15 plus years again anytime during this 21st century. If you are too locked in with something or someone than it makes it hard to be truly open to possibilities that can make you your best. I think the university could market itself so much better than the “Powered by Orange” stuff. The new Linus Pauling Science Center and a quick bit on Linus and his 2 Nobel Prizes should be showcased in a commercial.

I realize the “Bleacher Report” is hardly the zenith of sports journalism, but in the absence of any progressive off season developments at OSU, and subsequently the lack of news, it is positive something to read about OSU football:

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1244648-pac-12-players-you-arent-paying-attention-to-and-should-osus-sean-mannion

I really liked the way Mannion played last year, and think the INTs were understandable given line play, lack of running play, and his inexperience. I wasn’t happy to hear he was still throwing INTs in spring ball, but I trust the kid is studying all summer and preparing to make better decisions. I’ve also consistently said the fact that his is a coach’s son, from a winning program, is a huge positive. I expect him to be a “student of the game.”

I wonder if Malik Gillmore will earn any PT this coming year. If it’s like Wheaton’s first true FR year, I hope not – they seemed like a waste of a redshirt. I suspect with the depth its better to redshirt Gillmore.

There are some areas where the university could improve, and I believe Ed Ray realizes this, definitely would like to see continued growth within the academics. Engineering, vet school, sports medicine are among some that provide good standards.

Having said that there are enough things to sell to recruits. What you do is play to your strengths and OSU has enough to play too. Are there built-in disadvantages, yes, but nothing that can’t be overcomed with the right amount of desire. This staff seems to have given up on trying to sell the top level recruits to come here. You really have to sell yourself (coach/program) to overcompensate some of the things that are lacking (small stadium most noteably). This staff doesn’t seem to want to do that. Rather they sit back wait for other programs to fill up and see if they can sweep up some scraps or continue to go look for projects they can coach up and beef up in a few years. That could work if you have the depth, but fails miserably if you don’t.

Do you have insider knowledge that the staff isn’t actively trying to “sell” the program to them? You’re presenting your opinion as though it is fact when clearly it is not true at all.

How does Notre Dame recruit so well? They have sucked a lot longer than Oregon state, and have not been relevant (minus false media hype) in over decade and half. Yet, they continually recruit the top athletes. Sure they have a great school, with a passionate fan base, and a fertile recruiting grounds, but I would think other Big10, Big12, and even some Big East teams would be a bigger pull than them. It must be the NBC deal? But now with all the other new tv deals I got a figure that recruits would be backing away. Just not right.

PG – GP, Michael Warren, Jason Kidd
SG – Harold Miner, Terrell Brandon, Bill Sharman
SF – Sean Elliot, Reggie Miller, Marques Johnson (Johnson was really a SF out of position in college… Ed O’Bannon could replace him)

It is context Jack. You are right he is a fool if only two people were holding a draft, however if 12 or 16 people drafted and voting on the internet determines the winner, then with 144 to 192 players than he may have a decent team. There is also Ron Lee, Ballard, Schrepf, Lichte, KJ, Fat, Sitton, Lester Conner, Andre miller, knight and the list goes on and on.

I noticed half your list wasn’t chosen either. I’m thinking the people drafting are probably some youngsters who don’t really know of the past players but know their names, stats and legends. I noticed they mention Luisetti and Sharman as not picked, so someone has a sideways look at history. But no Arnie Ferrin or Willie Naulls either? This sort of tells me no Trees, Trojans, Bruins or Utes were picking.

I think you’ve got it over your opponent. I’m actually not sure how your opponent made it this far. I personally would not pick Don MacLean in the second round… of a draft of only UCLA players. There are some really weird picks in those 11 rounds. In all the years of West Coast hoops, some of those guys decided they would rather scrape the barrel for picks. I mean… Steve Kerr picked in the same round as Salim Stoudamire? You’re lucky there are no Cats fans in that league.

Oh… and Lamond Murray did not go to UCLA.

Sounds like great size for a guard. I imagine his recruiting will really pick up in the coming year.
