Opening a new thread, per Angry’s request.

Topics of interest this week,

Football recruiting:  Big week as we have a home game in which the Beavs are favored, with several visitors planning to make the trip.  One intriguing is Dorian Hall, out of Hollywood, FL.  Started his HS career playing QB, but his athleticism and size make him a really interesting prospect in the secondary.  Would be a neat deal if the Beavs could land him.

Also, 4* WR Isaiah Hodgins announces his decision this Friday.  Beavs/Huskers/Ducks in his top 3.  Couldn’t hand pick 2 better teams to beat out for a recruit, from a Beaver fan perspective.  If the Beavs land him, I think I would have to give the assist to Coach Rueck on this one. (will explain at a later date, if he does indeed end up here)

Basketball:  Hearing not so glowing reviews about the start to the MBB season.  Partially to blame could be STJ’s mystery foot injury.  Several new players also are being added to the mix with McLoughlin, Dew and Stacey joining the squad.  Plenty of time to gel before Pac-12 play.  WBB took care of business in game 1 and play game 2 tonight vs Idaho.

Keep your thoughts with Seth Collins this week, as we’ve heard he is battling health issues and was reportedly hospitalized in Corvallis.

  1. I can’t believe I actually made it to first. I’d like to thank my parents for believing in me my coaches and of course the man upstairs.

  2. Does Isaiah Hodgins have any connections to OSU already? If I were a WR I’d be looking at who will be at QB for the team I would be considering. Let’s hope he doesn’t.
Isaiah seems cocky (tweet pic laying under all the offers)… if he comes here maybe him and Seth can run a competition for who gets the most un-sportman like conduct calls. He’d be a great get. Hope we can land him.

    • Sounds like he’s leaning towards the Ducks according to his cousin… Tho that was a couple weeks ago and the Ducks continue to fall apart, so hopefully that helps the Beavs

    • Hate to say it, but whose going to get him the ball? QB play has been awful all year. Hope Andersen has an answer for this question that this recruit should be asking.

    • Biggest connection is Baldwin used to coach Hodgin’s dad, and we were one of the 1st schools to show interest in him 2 years ago. Hodgins also really geta along well with Brennan.
Aidan Willard did play on his 7on7 team as well, so at least they are familiar with each other.

Maybe a little bit cocky, because he dominates at his level. Playing against better competition should be humbling, but so far he backs up everything on the field.

  3. Hoops had a rough first half last night. Tres was pretty cold and there wasn’t a lot of defensive energy. There also seemed to be some toying around with the line up. The new guys look solid. Don’t worry too much about them yet.

  4. Strange watching the MBB without Payton part dos. Team will miss Malcom’s senior steadiness even with all his drawbacks. Did it ever come out why he left? The loss of Bruce will probably cost a couple games while the frosh gets up to speed. He looked lost in the first half and good in the second. Dew has the same shooting touch as Gabby from the WBB team. Clank city. Going to miss the the off the charts all around play of Payton. If Tinkle can get a NCAA bid this year, then look out in the future. Looks like a step back year early on.

    • And the reason I thought we had mandatory vaccinations was because of the seven cases here with one death last year.

I guess we just don’t care enough about kids to do this?

        • The simplest explanation would be that they aren’t mandatory. That might be apparent to anyone who looks at this situation and notes that everyone that was on the plane with him from LA received the vaccine after he was hospitalized.

So I ask again, do we not care about our kids?

          • The better vote would be……………….

Should Jack’s dad have pulled out sooner?

Should Jack’s mom have had an abortion?

Don’t sit on your ass. Grab this vote by the pussy

          • I don’t understand.

Why would that be a better vote? It makes little sense, and it has nothing to do with you starting something by making fun of an illness and stereotyping all people who use drugs… except, I’m guessing, the drugs you use like alcohol or whatever you’re on now.

  5. Leg Humpers lose their season opener at home to Yale yesterday. Wouldn’t at all shock me to see Romar get the ax after this season

  6. If it were me, I’d use combos. Body, head, left, right, left, left, right, body, body. Then clinch and elbow.

Got to use the left. Have to hook, jab, cross, uppercut. Don’t be afraid to miss a few. Keep firing!

    • Next year we’ll have uni pants that have thongs on them. Some people with orange colored glasses won’t see it, even after Nike apologizes for the embarrassment and promises to make us new unis for free… that are just a patchwork of UCONN’s marks in our colors.

    • Would you like to take this time and mock SC for his medical issue as well?

Let’s giggle and make fun of Dave Duerson and Junior Seau too.

    • I thought they couldn’t diagnose that until you were already dead and they could look at your brain. Am I missing something? Or are they explaining away mental illness?

      • You’re correct that only after death can CTE be diagnosed. But they’re still collecting data. They’re pretty sure that what they have is the right track for diagnosis because indicators are consistent with about a 90% success rate when looking at the dead. But 90% isn’t good enough to call it a proper diagnosis.

So we need to ask the author of the Sacramento Bee article to clarify or retract that claim… or the author of this one to do the same if it wasn’t said in the original.

        • And now that I follow the Duck’s link to the Sacramento Bee, I see it’s to the Fresno Bee. And a court-ordered psychiatrist is the oe who has made the diagnosis.

        • That’s what I thought, as I understood it they were on the cusp of being able to diagnose while the patient was alive. It was something to do figuring out a new way to use mri or possibly a new way of peeking into the brain that has yet to be made. Hopefully they get it done sooner rather then later.

          • I think the MRI can’t distinguish between recent and existing, let alone progressive damage. There’s something to do with a couple proteins (tau?) that, combined with the MRI can lead to a diagnosis of some certainty, which is how I’m sure the psychiatrist reported it to the court.

          • “I think” the MRI can’t distinguish between recent and existing, let alone progressive damage. There’s something to do with a couple proteins (tau?) that, combined with the MRI can lead to a diagnosis of some certainty, which is how I’m sure the psychiatrist reported it to the court.

Key words there being “I think”. Self proclaimed expert you are. Dick

          • Without DSM V criteria I would be hard pressed to believe that a psychiatrist made this diagnosis. Some are alleging imaging as a pathway to diagnosis but this is a syndrome that is neither fully characterized nor understood. There are no consensus diagnostic criteria let alone anything even reasonable beyond brain biopsy. This diagnosis is for show and clicks, never would hold up in any court.

          • I would agree that unless the psychiatrist worked with the university, who followed a protocol laid out by someone like the BU researchers and consulted them, then this diagnosis might not be one. I can’t see anyone in the health field actually reporting this directly to a court without due process and heavily couching it in words like “with X% certainty” and “according to known and changing research.”

Then again, our legal system has allowed a lot of spurious voodoo mumbo jumbo to become predicated law. While I would question any health professional who made a spurious claim in favor of sympathy, the intersection of religion and science (an imaginary variable) has usually swung in favor of judgments and treatments as poor as can be imagined.

  7. So what’s the deal with Xavier Davis? @BeavsRecruitNews says he’s coming this weekend, but he’s not on Pima’s football roster. Is he sitting out so he can be a 3×3 guy? Is he hurt? Did he transfer somewhere else or what?

    • Dont know the answer to this, other than he is indeed visiting. Been confirmed by multiple parties.

In related news/tease, I suspect there is an unlisted visitor coming who is 4* amd committed elsewhere. I wont say anything more until the weekend plays out because this type of stuff tends to be sensitive.
I’ll also add new names to the list later today as i’ve had a fee updstes come in since the last one i put out

  8. Sounds like Solomon may be back in action for Zona this Saturday. Not sure that sets up as well for the Beavs. Solomon can take off and run when needed and when he is having a good night he can throw well (60% rated). On the flip side I’ve seen Solomon throw gift interceptions on more then one outing. I’m going to assume we can cover their passing game with our better secondary. Just worried about our beat-up linebacker core. I hope Nall will be back in the game and McM takes a step forward… sounds like GA has McM on a short leash.

I’m sorry this post was about OSU football and not everything else outside of OSU sports.

  9. OT: Clapping too loud!
Went to a B-ball game at the Barn last night. 70ish guy sitting next to me turns to me early in the second half and says, “can you please stop clapping so so loud, your hands are right at my ear level and it is hurting my ears.” After the initial shock, my friend and I realized his tormentors were the couple directly in back of him. We started doing exaggerated golf claps and the idiot left after realizing he had falsely accused me of felonious clapping. WTF?

BTW, the refs were just as bad here. No consistency. Foul fest at the beginning and mugging allowed later on.

  10. Remember Zona took UW to OT at the start of the season. A lot has happened since, but if Solomon is back, Beavs lose a close one. Of course if Mayonaisse The Destroyer steps up like he did against UCLA…..

  11. Arizona is probably looking at the Beavs like the Beavs are looking at them. Both see a winnable game. Combined 12 game losing streak.

I think if Nall plays, OSU wins comfortably. If he doesn’t, it’ll come down to which QB sucks least.

Nall takes a lot of pressure off MM. Otherwise, they’ll have to rely on MM more and MM can’t carry the team.

  12. Anyone see that Dwayne Williams is expected back? Should be a good get for an incredibly beat-up defense. Strange that for as bad as our team is, we might be as deep at CB as any time I can remember. Williams, Crawford, and Decoud at CB is a really, really good trio. We’ll miss Decoud next year but CB should still be a position of strength.

Also, here’s the latest Eggers article:
    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/332311-211166-war-of-attrition-makes-beavers-battle-tested

I didn’t realize that Hughes-Murray missed all of fall camp and 5 games of the season with his hamstring injury. He’s insanely raw then, makes some of the mistakes more palatable. Hopefully he can get better every week.

Also, all of the top-5 outside linebackers to start the season out? That is insane. Didn’t realize it was that bad.

Our roster has such weird talent/performance and injury discrepancies. I feel like RB and CB are really strong units – exceptional with Nall and Williams in the fold. OL and OLB were freakishly devastated by injury and generally inconsistent. QB, WR, and TE are really bad. DL is good to OK. MLB and S are mediocre.

    • Bet Casey’s got that series vs Meggs and his leg humpers marked on the calendar. Too bad it isn’t nearer the end of the season…….lookin’ for some payback.

  13. Recruiting good WRs will be a stretch until we get a real QB that can get these guys the ball. The PAC-12 is full of good/promising young QBs.

  14. Continuing to keep it real classy in Eugene…………………..That ship is sinking faster than the Titanic

“Carrington yelled at the group that he’d “heard what you said about me” from a car. Holland said the group did not have a car that night and believes that Carrington confused Holland or his group with someone else.

“Before I had even time to process what was going on fully, I was pushed at full force, kind of like you would to a bench press, from Carrington,” Holland said. “As I was breaking my fall on the asphalt with my right hand, I landed pretty forcefully. That’s when I broke my arm.”

They said they saw a shoulder-width tattoo of Carrington’s last name on his back, because he was shirtless. After the alleged shove, Holland and witnesses also said Carrington began yelling at the group as they began walking to the hospital, saying, “‘I’m Darren Carrington, No. 7, wide receiver for the Ducks, that’s right, Darren Carrington, San Diego, California,'” Holland said.”

Way to keep anonymity about your identity after physically assaulting someone. Genius

    http://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/index.ssf/2016/11/ducks_receiver_darren_carringt_4.html#incart_std

    • Are you saying a responsible human being needs to try to remain anonymous after physically assaulting (technically battery in this case) someone?

On the bright side, the prosecutor can charge him with attempted manslaughter and deport him to San Diego now that it looks like his work visa will be revoked.

      • another reach on your part

Assaulting someone is a crime and idiotic. But this genius has the mental capacity to commit a crime then insult his victim by announcing who he is. I’m so and so, don’t mess with me or this is what will happen to you.

        • Again… how is announcing who you are an insult? Isn’t that the height of accountability?

Besides, he’s innocent until proven guilty. So I don’t know what you’re upset about.

Way to keep anonymity about your identity after physically assaulting someone. Genius

^^This^^ is what you wrote. There’s no way to interpret that as “he was insulting and/or menacing” afterward. In fact, if you would not have written this you could claim that reasoning now. But you did, and you can’t.

          • C’mon, Jack. Isn’t it clear that Whiskey is saying that it’s pretty stupid to commit a crime (if one was committed) and not try to hide your identity. Don’t we all laugh at the bank robber who writes his note on his own deposit slip?

          • Why would that be stupid? I look at those criminals as much more responsible than the ones who run and hide. The only thing they can do better is to walk straight to the nearest police station and turn themselves in.

          • “Again… how is announcing who you are an insult?

I explained it. If you can’t fathom that I don’t know what to tell you. But I also don’t expect a bully to understand bullying. You and Mr Carrington have quite a bit in common

Isn’t that the height of accountability?

People who commit crimes are worried about being accountable for their actions since when?

I can claim whatever I wish. Semantics. Was taken out of context. It works for you lol

          • But I also don’t expect a bully to understand bullying.

Are you feeling bullied? Please do tell me how that one works for you. Could you tell me at the next game? I’m going to want some free popcorn for this one.

We’re all just here having a good time talking about OSU sports or topics related to angry’s posts. Isn’t that what we’re talking about? Forgive me if I stray from the subject every now and then?

And I hope your condition clears up soon. Thin skin is no laughing matter.

  15. ” I look at those criminals as much more responsible than the ones who run and hide.”

Criminal and responsible? Now I’ve heard it all.

If you make a mistake, own it, learn from it then move on. If you don’t learn from your mistakes then they aren’t mistakes. It’s a pattern of behavior.

I have a sneaking suspicion this isn’t the last time we will see Carrington’s name in the police blotter

    • It almost seems like he wants to get caught so he’ll be suspended for the rest of the year then declare at the end of the season. That’s the only explanation I can come up with to explain how fucking stupid he is.

    • Question:

If you make a mistake, own it, learn from it then move on. If you don’t learn from your mistakes then they aren’t mistakes. It’s a pattern of behavior.

Why does is take someone pointing out your moronic statements to get you to write something real like this?

      Irony: a virtual laundry service

      • My god it is so easy to get you riled up and your panties in a wad. It’s fun and I enjoy it immensely. Keep up the good fight King Richard

        • Panties in a wad… good one.

And which King Richard? Since I don’t peg you as someone who could answer that in either a historical or literate way… I think this is you trying to be clever (or really stale) while also playing with your bag of dicks?

          • Owning your mistake is turning yourself in. Or apologizing to the guy and helping him to the hospital. Not standing there with your shirt off bragging about who you are and what number you wear on the football field.

Jack even for you this is a reach

          • That’s not what he said. He said that the stupidity of the situation is that the criminal did not retain anonymity.

What you describe is a sliding scale. You’re correct. Turning yourself in is not the only thing that can be done better. So I was wrong in that I used hyperbole. I’m arguing that the delineation for being accountable is the point where the criminal runs away and hides. Retaining anonymity is on one side of that line, and it is claimed above it’s the smart thing to do… in no uncertain terms.

Your claim that this is a reach is arguing with moving goalposts.

            Please try to keep up.

          • You’re not nobody.

If you want to have a discussion about how it’s wrong and stupid to summarily say FUCK YOU to a wounded person on the way to a hospital–and (maybe) blame that person for their own injury–relative to instead doing the right thing and helping that person, I’m in agreement. I would go so far as to say he deserves to have it thrown back in his face until he makes amends personally and legally. But I also don’t think anyone here would say he’s hypocritical because he now has a lawyer who is telling him to just STFU about it. Wouldn’t that be the genius thing to do where the legal system is involved?

It sounds like one of the victim’s friends held up a phone and recorded him being proud of what he had done. Good. That makes it so that the legal system my taxes pay for doesn’t have to do some song and dance involving s/he said s/he said. They can offer an easy path to reconciliation, and he can accept that path or not.

It’s too bad that’s not what was written.

  16. Jack, shut the fuck up. You are the worst part about this site, from your shitty music to crying about Trump or your endless posts to nobody. Talk about the Beavers or just shut the fuck up.

    • Have I spoken off topic here?

Do you not like the new normal?

Tough shit. It has been validated. Don’t hate the player.

Btw, I love that shade of victimhood on you. I also love that my shitty music is a microaggression to you.

      Boo hoo!

Good talk. Let’s do it again sometime.

      • If any of you other thin-skinned whiny wusses want to complain about me going off topic, there’s an easily (and I mean really easily) deductible method above to make this a safe zone for you.

          • I don’t know why they don’t… or pretend to be upset about it.

            Sheesh!

New normal people. Get used to it, or don’t bring up stupid stuff here… unless you think free speech only applies to you and your limited view of the world. You write words, and others write words in response.

Hi, my name’s Jack. I like words… and shitty music.

There’s a lot of stupid out there, and it’s about to get a shit-ton stupider. So, by all means, drag it in here if you like… or don’t.

And if you think I’m making you feel like a wuss, just remember that steel doesn’t sharpen steel. Rocks sharpen steel.

  17. The Oregonian will delete any comment suggesting a parallel between playing Carrington after this potential felony and playing three basketball players in the tourney after being accused of raping a female student

  18. § 163.165¹
    Assault in the third degree

    (1) A person commits the crime of assault in the third degree if the person:

    (a) Recklessly causes serious physical injury to another by means of a deadly or dangerous weapon;

    (b) Recklessly causes serious physical injury to another under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life;

    (c) Recklessly causes physical injury to another by means of a deadly or dangerous weapon under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life;

    (d) Intentionally, knowingly or recklessly causes, by means other than a motor vehicle, physical injury to the operator of a public transit vehicle while the operator is in control of or operating the vehicle. As used in this paragraph, public transit vehicle has the meaning given that term in ORS 166.116 (Interfering with public transportation);

    (e) While being aided by another person actually present, intentionally or knowingly causes physical injury to another;

    (f) While committed to a youth correction facility, intentionally or knowingly causes physical injury to another knowing the other person is a staff member while the other person is acting in the course of official duty;

(2)(a) Assault in the third degree is a Class C felony.

    (b) Notwithstanding paragraph (a) of this subsection, assault in the third degree under subsection (1)(a) or (b) of this section is a Class B felony if:

    (A) The assault resulted from the operation of a motor vehicle; and

    (B) The defendant was the driver of the motor vehicle and was driving while under the influence of intoxicants.

    • Oh my…

According to Original Strength, when you crawl, you’re “pressing reset” on your central nervous system and revisiting the mobility patterns you learned as a baby.

… where to start with this hypothesis?

Let’s go here for O-linemen… after talking about it being bad for knees…

Crawling also should be avoided if you have wrist, shoulder or neck issues, said Jacque Crockford, an exercise physiologist at the American Council on Exercise.

Who knew that what makes sense is true? Cutting edge my foot.

  19. Thanks for manning the fort for a few days, guys. Had to get some medical things cleared up. Tests turned out perfect so that’s a relief.

I have a basketball thread scheduled to go up at 4:30 for the Lamar game. Keep anything OT here until that game starts.

    -AB

  20. Been reading that Nall is still a maybe for Saturday (red no contact jersey in practice). A large number of people are saying sit him out and keep him for the duck game (replies to articles). Not sure I agree… every game counts and a win this weekend I think inspires my Beavs to go duck hunting. Thoughts?

    • Andersen on Canzano made it sound like Nall will go this weekend. (I only half listened so i could have missed something)
I don’t see the point in saving him for one more week, unless he’s likely to cause some permanent damage.

    • Ask yourself if you would want to play if you were cleared to do so.

Maybe you think about it if you’re traveling and that travel spot could be given to someone else you need for whatever reason… ugh… like an extra kicker. But even that’s a stretch.

  21. Just listened to a GA interview on a local radio show. He says Beavs have lost 25 starters over the season (I’m guessing that’s missing a minimum of 1 game). That’s pretty severe.

    • Dang. Wonder what the deal is… young inexperienced players? Or just the physical level is so high now and everything is so fast. I’d be curious to see what the other Pac 12 teams have going on with injuries. I don’t think it is just us but maybe it is.

        • Not really the same thing though – that list looks like “best players to miss at least one game” – not “most significant players for their team that missed the most time.” We lost fewer objective studs because our team was never overflowing with objective studs. The list really doesn’t address which teams were hardest hit by injury.

Really dumb that Nall didn’t make the list though. Look at PFF’s rating of his performance – he is literally off the charts. Best RB in the conference in missed tackles and it’s not close.

  22. PHIL STEELE REPORT:

    Arizona (Offense: 63 / Defense: 91 / Special Teams: 112) – Game Grade Average 79.6 (#74)
    Projected Final Record: 2-10

    UCLA (Offense: 96 / Defense: 79 / Special Teams: 50) – Game Grade Average 79.0 (#77)
    Projected Final Record: 3-9

Coming into last year Oregon State was 12-2 SU and 12-2 ATS in this series. It was 90? at kickoff in October last year and Arizona took out a lot of pent up frustration as they throttled the Beavers 44-7 (-10) with a 645-249 yard edge. Oregon State figures to have cold weather for this and Arizona does have Arizona State on deck (Oregon State has Civil War). Surprisingly with the climate differences, the visitor is 7-3 SU/ATS and there have been 5 outright upsets the last 6 years. Arizona lost their 7th straight last week off a 49-24 (+16) home loss vs Colorado. Colorado led 42-10 3rd quarter and Arizona added 2 garbage time TD’s. Oregon State enters off a 38-24 (+11) loss at UCLA. The Beavers played without RB Nall (injury) and were outgained 444-307 & out first downed 25-16. Arizona averages 402 ypg and is -16 ypg on the season. On the road vs Pac-12 foes, the Cats are -32 ppg & -132 ypg. Oregon State averages 350 ypg and is -92 ypg on the season but in Pac-12 home games, the Beavers are -2 ppg & +15 ypg. Neither team will go bowling but Arizona has rival Arizona State on deck with short rest. My computer is calling for Oregon State to win by double digits & I’ll agree with that forecast.
