Opening a new thread, per Angry’s request.

Topics of interest this week,

Football recruiting:  Big week as we have a home game in which the Beavs are favored, with several visitors planning to make the trip.  One intriguing is Dorian Hall, out of Hollywood, FL.  Started his HS career playing QB, but his athleticism and size make him a really interesting prospect in the secondary.  Would be a neat deal if the Beavs could land him.

Also, 4* WR Isaiah Hodgins announces his decision this Friday.  Beavs/Huskers/Ducks in his top 3.  Couldn’t hand pick 2 better teams to beat out for a recruit, from a Beaver fan perspective.  If the Beavs land him, I think I would have to give the assist to Coach Rueck on this one. (will explain at a later date, if he does indeed end up here)

Basketball:  Hearing not so glowing reviews about the start to the MBB season.  Partially to blame could be STJ’s mystery foot injury.  Several new players also are being added to the mix with McLoughlin, Dew and Stacey joining the squad.  Plenty of time to gel before Pac-12 play.  WBB took care of business in game 1 and play game 2 tonight vs Idaho.

Keep your thoughts with Seth Collins this week, as we’ve heard he is battling health issues and was reportedly hospitalized in Corvallis.

Does Isaiah Hodgins have any connections to OSU already? If I were a WR I’d be looking at who will be at QB for the team I would be considering. Let’s hope he doesn’t.
Isaiah seems cocky (tweet pic laying under all the offers)… if he comes here maybe him and Seth can run a competition for who gets the most un-sportman like conduct calls. He’d be a great get. Hope we can land him.

Hate to say it, but whose going to get him the ball? QB play has been awful all year. Hope Andersen has an answer for this question that this recruit should be asking.

Biggest connection is Baldwin used to coach Hodgin’s dad, and we were one of the 1st schools to show interest in him 2 years ago. Hodgins also really geta along well with Brennan.
Aidan Willard did play on his 7on7 team as well, so at least they are familiar with each other.

Maybe a little bit cocky, because he dominates at his level. Playing against better competition should be humbling, but so far he backs up everything on the field.

Hoops had a rough first half last night. Tres was pretty cold and there wasn’t a lot of defensive energy. There also seemed to be some toying around with the line up. The new guys look solid. Don’t worry too much about them yet.

I could be wrong about Stacy with those turnover numbers. I see that they will make significant contributions and they already look like they have a feel for the game and the offense, and not the common sit back and look and play out of place feel that you can have with first year guys.

Strange watching the MBB without Payton part dos. Team will miss Malcom’s senior steadiness even with all his drawbacks. Did it ever come out why he left? The loss of Bruce will probably cost a couple games while the frosh gets up to speed. He looked lost in the first half and good in the second. Dew has the same shooting touch as Gabby from the WBB team. Clank city. Going to miss the the off the charts all around play of Payton. If Tinkle can get a NCAA bid this year, then look out in the future. Looks like a step back year early on.

You’re correct that only after death can CTE be diagnosed. But they’re still collecting data. They’re pretty sure that what they have is the right track for diagnosis because indicators are consistent with about a 90% success rate when looking at the dead. But 90% isn’t good enough to call it a proper diagnosis.

So we need to ask the author of the Sacramento Bee article to clarify or retract that claim… or the author of this one to do the same if it wasn’t said in the original.

And now that I follow the Duck’s link to the Sacramento Bee, I see it’s to the Fresno Bee. And a court-ordered psychiatrist is the oe who has made the diagnosis.

That’s what I thought, as I understood it they were on the cusp of being able to diagnose while the patient was alive. It was something to do figuring out a new way to use mri or possibly a new way of peeking into the brain that has yet to be made. Hopefully they get it done sooner rather then later.

I think the MRI can’t distinguish between recent and existing, let alone progressive damage. There’s something to do with a couple proteins (tau?) that, combined with the MRI can lead to a diagnosis of some certainty, which is how I’m sure the psychiatrist reported it to the court.

Without DSM V criteria I would be hard pressed to believe that a psychiatrist made this diagnosis. Some are alleging imaging as a pathway to diagnosis but this is a syndrome that is neither fully characterized nor understood. There are no consensus diagnostic criteria let alone anything even reasonable beyond brain biopsy. This diagnosis is for show and clicks, never would hold up in any court.

I would agree that unless the psychiatrist worked with the university, who followed a protocol laid out by someone like the BU researchers and consulted them, then this diagnosis might not be one. I can’t see anyone in the health field actually reporting this directly to a court without due process and heavily couching it in words like “with X% certainty” and “according to known and changing research.”

Then again, our legal system has allowed a lot of spurious voodoo mumbo jumbo to become predicated law. While I would question any health professional who made a spurious claim in favor of sympathy, the intersection of religion and science (an imaginary variable) has usually swung in favor of judgments and treatments as poor as can be imagined.

Sounds like Solomon may be back in action for Zona this Saturday. Not sure that sets up as well for the Beavs. Solomon can take off and run when needed and when he is having a good night he can throw well (60% rated). On the flip side I’ve seen Solomon throw gift interceptions on more then one outing. I’m going to assume we can cover their passing game with our better secondary. Just worried about our beat-up linebacker core. I hope Nall will be back in the game and McM takes a step forward… sounds like GA has McM on a short leash.

I’m sorry this post was about OSU football and not everything else outside of OSU sports.

With our history against rusty/new QBs along with all of our injuries and lack of depth, I fully expect this to be AZ’s first conference win of the season. I hope I’m wrong but I have yet to be pleasantly surprised by the Beavs this year. Even if McM takes a step forward, he now has one less receiver who can catch the ball, so how many does that leave him?

Somebody needs to break-out! I think it is sooooo important to get these last two as wins for recruiting. We have a lot of visits but even more the momentum going into the off season would really help. GA has been in such an uphill battle and could probably use the help of 2 more wins.

    OT: Clapping too loud!
Went to a B-ball game at the Barn last night. 70ish guy sitting next to me turns to me early in the second half and says, “can you please stop clapping so so loud, your hands are right at my ear level and it is hurting my ears.” After the initial shock, my friend and I realized his tormentors were the couple directly in back of him. We started doing exaggerated golf claps and the idiot left after realizing he had falsely accused me of felonious clapping. WTF?

BTW, the refs were just as bad here. No consistency. Foul fest at the beginning and mugging allowed later on.

Arizona is probably looking at the Beavs like the Beavs are looking at them. Both see a winnable game. Combined 12 game losing streak.

I think if Nall plays, OSU wins comfortably. If he doesn’t, it’ll come down to which QB sucks least.

Nall takes a lot of pressure off MM. Otherwise, they’ll have to rely on MM more and MM can’t carry the team.

Anyone see that Dwayne Williams is expected back? Should be a good get for an incredibly beat-up defense. Strange that for as bad as our team is, we might be as deep at CB as any time I can remember. Williams, Crawford, and Decoud at CB is a really, really good trio. We’ll miss Decoud next year but CB should still be a position of strength.

Also, here’s the latest Eggers article:
    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/332311-211166-war-of-attrition-makes-beavers-battle-tested

I didn’t realize that Hughes-Murray missed all of fall camp and 5 games of the season with his hamstring injury. He’s insanely raw then, makes some of the mistakes more palatable. Hopefully he can get better every week.

Also, all of the top-5 outside linebackers to start the season out? That is insane. Didn’t realize it was that bad.

Our roster has such weird talent/performance and injury discrepancies. I feel like RB and CB are really strong units – exceptional with Nall and Williams in the fold. OL and OLB were freakishly devastated by injury and generally inconsistent. QB, WR, and TE are really bad. DL is good to OK. MLB and S are mediocre.

“Before I had even time to process what was going on fully, I was pushed at full force, kind of like you would to a bench press, from Carrington,” Holland said. “As I was breaking my fall on the asphalt with my right hand, I landed pretty forcefully. That’s when I broke my arm.”

They said they saw a shoulder-width tattoo of Carrington’s last name on his back, because he was shirtless. After the alleged shove, Holland and witnesses also said Carrington began yelling at the group as they began walking to the hospital, saying, “‘I’m Darren Carrington, No. 7, wide receiver for the Ducks, that’s right, Darren Carrington, San Diego, California,'” Holland said.”

What you describe is a sliding scale. You’re correct. Turning yourself in is not the only thing that can be done better. So I was wrong in that I used hyperbole. I’m arguing that the delineation for being accountable is the point where the criminal runs away and hides. Retaining anonymity is on one side of that line, and it is claimed above it’s the smart thing to do… in no uncertain terms.

I would go so far as to say he deserves to have it thrown back in his face until he makes amends personally and legally. But I also don’t think anyone here would say he’s hypocritical because he now has a lawyer who is telling him to just STFU about it. Wouldn’t that be the genius thing to do where the legal system is involved?

It sounds like one of the victim’s friends held up a phone and recorded him being proud of what he had done. Good. That makes it so that the legal system my taxes pay for doesn’t have to do some song and dance involving s/he said s/he said. They can offer an easy path to reconciliation, and he can accept that path or not.

I have talked about “potential” felony charges…..which is correct

That’s not a rationale for assuming facts not in evidence. That’s the root of your illogical inferences, which I am pointing at right now.

      Oh my…

According to Original Strength, when you crawl, you’re “pressing reset” on your central nervous system and revisiting the mobility patterns you learned as a baby.

… where to start with this hypothesis?

Let’s go here for O-linemen… after talking about it being bad for knees…

Crawling also should be avoided if you have wrist, shoulder or neck issues, said Jacque Crockford, an exercise physiologist at the American Council on Exercise.

Who knew that what makes sense is true? Cutting edge my foot.

Thanks for manning the fort for a few days, guys. Had to get some medical things cleared up. Tests turned out perfect so that’s a relief.

I have a basketball thread scheduled to go up at 4:30 for the Lamar game. Keep anything OT here until that game starts.

Been reading that Nall is still a maybe for Saturday (red no contact jersey in practice). A large number of people are saying sit him out and keep him for the duck game (replies to articles). Not sure I agree… every game counts and a win this weekend I think inspires my Beavs to go duck hunting. Thoughts?

Andersen on Canzano made it sound like Nall will go this weekend. (I only half listened so i could have missed something)
I don’t see the point in saving him for one more week, unless he’s likely to cause some permanent damage.

If he’s at full speed, he should play. There’s no saving wins here.

Ask yourself if you would want to play if you were cleared to do so.

Maybe you think about it if you’re traveling and that travel spot could be given to someone else you need for whatever reason… ugh… like an extra kicker. But even that’s a stretch.

Just listened to a GA interview on a local radio show. He says Beavs have lost 25 starters over the season (I’m guessing that’s missing a minimum of 1 game). That’s pretty severe.

Dang. Wonder what the deal is… young inexperienced players? Or just the physical level is so high now and everything is so fast. I’d be curious to see what the other Pac 12 teams have going on with injuries. I don’t think it is just us but maybe it is.

Wilner is out with an “all injury” PAC12 team. The only Beav listed is Noah Togiai. So, yeah, in his opinion the Beavs aren’t alone in missing players.

He says,“… unfortunately, you could form a pretty good team made up exclusively of players lost for the season.”

Not really the same thing though – that list looks like “best players to miss at least one game” – not “most significant players for their team that missed the most time.” We lost fewer objective studs because our team was never overflowing with objective studs. The list really doesn’t address which teams were hardest hit by injury.

Really dumb that Nall didn’t make the list though. Look at PFF’s rating of his performance – he is literally off the charts. Best RB in the conference in missed tackles and it’s not close.

Looks like Jonathan Willis could get some time at OLB this Saturday. It will be nice to see him back on the field. I had thought he and Liuchan(sp?) would have earned more PT this year. Perhaps they’ve had some injury issues too?

    PHIL STEELE REPORT:

    Arizona (Offense: 63 / Defense: 91 / Special Teams: 112) – Game Grade Average 79.6 (#74)
    Projected Final Record: 2-10

    UCLA (Offense: 96 / Defense: 79 / Special Teams: 50) – Game Grade Average 79.0 (#77)
    Projected Final Record: 3-9

Coming into last year Oregon State was 12-2 SU and 12-2 ATS in this series. It was 90? at kickoff in October last year and Arizona took out a lot of pent up frustration as they throttled the Beavers 44-7 (-10) with a 645-249 yard edge. Oregon State figures to have cold weather for this and Arizona does have Arizona State on deck (Oregon State has Civil War). Surprisingly with the climate differences, the visitor is 7-3 SU/ATS and there have been 5 outright upsets the last 6 years. Arizona lost their 7th straight last week off a 49-24 (+16) home loss vs Colorado. Colorado led 42-10 3rd quarter and Arizona added 2 garbage time TD’s. Oregon State enters off a 38-24 (+11) loss at UCLA. The Beavers played without RB Nall (injury) and were outgained 444-307 & out first downed 25-16. Arizona averages 402 ypg and is -16 ypg on the season. On the road vs Pac-12 foes, the Cats are -32 ppg & -132 ypg. Oregon State averages 350 ypg and is -92 ypg on the season but in Pac-12 home games, the Beavers are -2 ppg & +15 ypg. Neither team will go bowling but Arizona has rival Arizona State on deck with short rest. My computer is calling for Oregon State to win by double digits & I’ll agree with that forecast.
