I’m taking OSU to win out the season.
This is too easy.
You da man.
No one wants to post until you’ve led the way, coach
Horrible feeling quacks are going to smack Furd. Hope I’m wrong, but Furd hasn’t exactly been inspiring confidence this season.
McCaffrey is going to put 500 APY on hole all by himself.
38-13 Stanford at the Half
McCaffrey is a freaking magician.
21-0 Furd, 4 left in the first.
Worst quack D I’ve ever seen. Are they trying to suck?
Helf screws himself going for two again lol. Guy never learns.
He should just get rid of any kickers on the team and only go for 2, never try for FG, and use a linebacker for kick-offs. That’s some innovation, coach.
The have one if the top kickers in the NCAAs too.
38-13 Furd, halftime. Sheesh
Lol Oregon player calls for fair catch, his own teammate runs into him, ball hits his back and recovered by Stanford. What a hot mess.
if OSU doesn’t win this Civil War we may never win one. OSU isn’t great but at least they’ve been competitive most weeks, UO is a dumpster fire.
OSU might lose t his one due to a lack of offense, but soon….
Rest Nall, save him for next two games, benefits to program would be high..
Every time the camera goes to Helf on the sideline it looks like he is having a hard time holding a fart in.
I know that feeling.
Stanford is going to drop 65+ on Oregon unless they call the dogs off.
They wore the wrong uniform obviously.
OSU has 7 losses this year of which 5 are to ranked teams. Stanford probably closed to being ranked after smashing oregon. If Gophers win tonight then we are looking at potentially all of our losses being to ranked teams. Who said OSU had an easy schedule…
All that is to say. If the season were to finish that way and we closed with a 3 game winning streak the season would hold a very different tone.
Please invoke any and all help from the Great Beaver in the Sky so that your fellow rodent may smite
the red clad interlopers from the land of corn.
Ridiculous ticky tack flags are turning Furd/Quack football into refball. Nearly unwatchable. This conference is never going to clean up its officiating, is it?
Nebby down 7-0 early.
17-10 Golden Rodents at the half. Shitty QB has missed on three sure TD passes.
Prediction is that GA brings in Blount before the first half. Don’t think McM will ever get out of the doghouse.
Read dials up his backward punt play last used in Madison, WI. Gifts the Gophers a FG. Should have been a TD, except Leidner sucks.
Here’s to a holy trinity for a college football Saturday……….Duck loss, NU loss, Beaver win.
Scored within 90 seconds!
UCLA felt sorry for us, I see.
I like that we didn’t try to get cute and pass it. Just punch it in!
And we get the ball to start the second half.
psst, decoud, feel free to look for the ball
ucla cheer, is that the best you can do? ucla is in so cal still right? ugh
They should have the Donald choose the squad for them. He knows what pussy is worth grabbing.
Aw man. Soesman down. Injury bug is just awful this year for the Beavs.
did you see that list of injured, brutal
Yep. The silver lining is lots of Freshmen are getting playing time. Good for recruiting.
Did the list show up on the broadcast? I’d be curious to see the full breakdown on the year.
yeah it was on screen, it was loooong. they also said 9 starters were freshman, given how stout they’ve played, should bear good fruit in the coming years.
Pretty crappy defense to start the game.
better pass and bolden may still be running
Lucas is so slow.
They only use him in that play. I want to see him on a screen / open space.
pierce looks faster
Such a blatant hold on that run. Would have had him stuffed.
2 bruins hold vakamelalo and he still gets the sack
villy officially a train wreck
Yep that’s enough playing time for the year.
What happened to Villamin? 🙁
maybe he moved into the place avocado man vacated.
Man, Villamin is pure trash this season. So bad in every facet of the receiving game. Smh
So let’s pretend he’s not what we see and hear, and let’s vote for him to be prez.
He’s the best receiver ever. Nobody is better in the history of receiving.
GA’s fault for continuing to play him. He’s been bad since last year.
You city folks just don’t get country people… who don’t have airports.
Please tell there is somebody that can beat out JV, he is horrible #bestWRcorpInPac12
JB = Junior Varsity this year
Same as my typing skills
Luck O’ the Beavs stat. Nall has had only 93 carries for the entire year!
God this team will find a way to fuck up any situation to give the other team points.
Disappointing. Can’t shoot themselves in the foot.
u$c up on the dogs
UCLA better on both OL and DL. FUCK
Where is Tim Cook?
The coaching staff is letting him rest up after his buck 98 against UW.
was that bruin trying to dry hump bolden?
See my comment above, again.
What happened to the wildcat formation?
Went extinct due to climate change.
Climate change is a hoax invented by the Chinese.
Sorry… I should be more accurate instead of being succinct.
The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.
So many flags and yet they miss the obvious holds that UCLA is guilty of
Just can’t graduate from those Huggies this year 🙁
In 1- 2 years it will be fun to watch OSU beavers D beatdi we n on others…
You’re a 2-7 team going nowhere this season and you punt from the opponents 33 yard line? Come on, GA.
What’s the point of read option if the QB never makes the read and keeps it! MM had a first down if he kept the ball on the last run
Mcm sux at making readsin the option game or is too pussy to run it. Either way its killing the team.
This team is abysmal on the road.
Our pass rush is just nonexistant
Andersen gets a D+ this year. Clune a C+. McGiven a D.
Not impressed overall. Don’t see team beating Arizona or Oregon even though sime here think we will beat both. Highly doubt that.
You’re an A.
So there’s that.
Looks like Nebby is going to win.
Minny has a chance for a tieing drive, let’s what they have.
That MN QB is horrible.
He sucks shit.
That 33yard pass from McM to Seth was nice. Not sure any other QB on the roster makes that throw. Coverage was actually good.
Agree, and a great catch too. But of course we follow it up 2-3 plays later with a botched handoff. Story of our offense.
Small coaching errors: not calling a TO with 1:50 left on the clock when you stop UCLA on 4th.
And then he passes twice once pinned at the 1.
UCLA doesn’t have to use any TOs.
I hope dumb time management and stupid play calls don’t lead to a late UCLA TD. This game is so winnable.
McM’s passing game is solid tonight. When he realizes his run potential, this offense will hang in most games. The fumble was the first attempt to pull it and run that I noticed. Seems to be plenty of yards available to him.
Bad football on both sides. Who can shoot themselves in the foot the least…it’s anybody’s game.
Those 3 points are on Gary Andersen. Riley-esque clock management there.
If OSU wanted to play offense, they needed to take the timeouts once they got a stop. Not let the clock run then throw passes from your own 1. Awful
When one of the half-time interviewers challenges clock management at the end of the half, you get a sense of how awful it was.
Been out for the entire 1st half. Is the 2nd half worth tuning in for? Do we appear to have a puncher’s chance?
I don’t know what the hell that 3rd and 3 call from their own 7 was? McM rolls out but no short receivers and I guess no run option? GA alluded to the poor play when he was interviewed at halftime. I think you call your best run play and hope you pick up the first down and then either two minute drill it or run out the clock. Worse case you make UCLA use a timeout. I’ve also concluded that the Beavs have nice running backs all the way around.
GA alluded to the poor play
He should fire McGiven.
And they hardly ever roll out McM and they decide to do it with that scenario?
Piss poor play calling for sure. This is a recurring theme.
3rd down efficiency/deficiency on both sides of the ball is telling a lot. Need to score on first possession in the 3rd.
Looks like the Huskies can say goodbye to the playoffs now.
USC is always tough for the pansy teams from the PNW. They seemed to always kill the Ducks during their runs, too. Not sure if that’s true or my memory failed me.
Don’t think that was true during Chip Kelly era, USC down trend..
What are the odds the coaching staff pulls McM and starts the walk-on in the 3rd Q?
Probably pretty high since they hate McM.
I’m beginning to think they hate Tim Cook, too. He bulldozes for one of the few first downs on 3rd down and I don’t think I’ve seen him since.
To my understanding, McGiven is co-offensive coordinator and in charge of the pass game. Run game has been good and the other guy coordinates that. Pass game has been bad (questionable personnel decisions and then consistently poor play calling). He seems like the clear weak link of the coaches.
Also very odd that McGiven has 1.5 jobs since he works with the QBs, yet Baldwin barely has half a job working only with the TEs.
Baldwin should have been OC this year. I don’t think I’ve seen a well-called game since Riley took the play calling from Langs like 5 years ago that one game.
Shit, McM can’t get any respect from the announcers either. They keep babbling about when Blount is going to come in
So Pierce runs for 17 yards up the gut and then they fuck around for three or four plays.
Yup. Story all season.
Hence fire McGiven. He’s really bad.
I see a lot of holding by UCLA. No calls.
Defense holding it down. Offense gotta do something. Run the ball!
D usually pulls it’s (injury depleyed) weight, the O doesn’t match it yet..
McM doesn’t seem confident on the option. Always pulling it when he should give it; not running when he should.
“It’s going to be just short of the line, Hernandez just short”
*4th and 12*
That’s twice in a row.
It’s best when our defense does the scoring. They don’t screw up the easy play calls
Our DC is a better OC.
Michigan loses on last second FG
Wow, I was just thinking the game is starting to feel like it’s over and then that play happens. Need a quick stop because if UCLA goes down and scores, it’s just a wash.
Beavs just down by a 3pt coaching error now
That’s a good point.
This QB seems like he’s ripe for an interception also.
Yep, McGiven for the passing/play calls inside the 1 and GA for his Timeout usage. It’s on both of them if this ends a 3 point game.
DB gets tackled.
Wow, ucla blocker climbs on our guy’s back, riding him to the ground. No call. Right in front of the official. Garbage.
Surely the Beav coaches can see that? Can’t they complain to the officials?
Targeting call is so out of control in ncaa football
This targeting thing needs to be fixed. The WR purposely goes to the ground.
But it’s player safety! Oh wait, no hits were actually prevented. Oops.
Seriously might as well play flag football. Pac refs plus stupid overzealous CYA rules make football a joke. More flags than a Trump or Hillary speech.
These targeting rules are stupid in how they’re enforced. How the hell is the defender supposed to avoid that?! The receiver dove right into him!
Pac12 officials are a joke
Scott needs to fix tha. Integrity and consistency should be goals.
All Larry Scott seems to care about is expanding basketball into China. This shit’s never getting cleaned up.
I shouldnt have turned the game on. It’s just been a flag fest ever since
Might be the most frustrating game of the season…just hard to watch
Did they not have a good replay of the target or was not showing it in detail on purpose?
If GA pulls another “it’s the right call, player safety, blah blah” on THIS “targeting” call, I’m going to puke. Can we rename “targeting” to “diving into the defender”? It’d be more accurate in half these calls.
One of the few healthy Beaver defenders is ejected on a terrible call. This will hurt them next week as well
The other thing about the targeting is the penalty is too severe. This guy misses the first half next week, too. Brutal. For a WR diving into him…
I really don’t understand the logic of suspending the player the following week.
Mcmaryion got hit late twice on that bolden pass. No call
Should’ve just dove into the defender. Free 15 yards and opponent ejection.
Go for it.
2 for 12 on 4th down speaks to poor play calling also, I would think.
Kick the FG
If they were actually playing for something I would say yes, but they are a 2-7 team with a spent defense. Way to conservative, just like the punt from the opponents 33 yard line.
They are playing for something — a 5 win season.
No need to get into bad habits like going for it just for the sake of it.
Theres his 3 back. Shouldn’t be down 7 right now.
MCM making a mess of this goaline series. Unbelievable
Still can’t figure out the zone read and threw a pick that was dropped
I thought it was a crappy play call. Collins had to run forever and it was obvious he was the target. If it was supposed to be a pick play the other Beav receiver didn’t do his job, in fact it looked like he just stood there and watched the play. They really need a pass catching TE down there.
Very obvious it was going to Collins. They should have thrown it back to the other side of the field if they wanted to get tricky.
Usually it’s the TE who drifts out to that opposite side, but I guess they have nobody they trust?
How is that not a block in the back?
Seriously. Been several blatant no call just in this quarter. Even the announcers were waiting for that call.
When the refs don’t flag it.
Right in front of the official too.
Man, football is becoming unwatchable. That’s great defense. It’s impossible to play in the secondary anymore.
You’d think we’d get a makeup non-call thrre
Think I’ll just listen to the beaver game on the radio next week while I do something actually fun. These Pac games are nothing but flag fests, and the flags aren’t even called evenly. Every Pac game today has been like this.
Absolutely horrible pass interference call in the endzone
That’s a well Hung Alu.
But not very speedy.
He was looking behind him waiting to get tackled. He could have gotten another 20 yards.
These announcers are absolutely brutal. They don’t even know what down it is. It’s vomit to the ears.
Yeah, it’s pretty gross.
We should elect them. That would make them better.
Why the trickeration. Just run it.
Defense still playing better offense for us
Run the ball Riley, geez
Hungalu for offensive MVP!
Waste of a takeaway. Cmon McGiven
Beavs defensive line is gassed
Defense has been in the whole game. Offense needs to make something happen.
Worse ref, Glasses Ref or Mothershed?
3rd & 7 down by 7 with 6:31 remaining in 4th quarter. We threw incomplete. Should have run the ball. Run it twice and gone for it on fourth if Necessary
I’ll let you reread that one… Numbers.
Now that I reread it, it looks like your sentence was eaten by auto-correct and just comes out wrong.
I think they need another turnover somehow or it’s over. I just don’t think they can sustain a drive on offense.
I think McMaryion could be a fine backup, 2nd string. I don’t see him as a playmaker. As a 2nd stringer to keep a team in the game when the other pieces are in place he’d be fine. At 5 to 6 games it’s fair to judge a guy, and that’s what he is. That has value on a rebuilding team, so I hope he sticks around, but he might think he can start elsewhere. His flaw is inability to make the big plays in crunch time, iffy footwork, and not running when it’s there.
This is very honest and accurate. He has the ability to throw it, but the decision making just screams unconfident in the other areas.
What happened to the rose colored glasses?
Said all along need to see him for 6 games before an assessment. We’re close enough.
I hope he sticks around as he might improve over the years. Right now he’s a solid backup but not starter. People should remember he’s only a RS freshman.
I agree. I think he would be a viable QB his senior year. He’s a C this year, a B next year… and maybe an A after that?
Red shirt sophomore actually.
I think Ted Robinson is on LSD. He just said Bolden “got a 1st down back” on a punt return. Whatever that means.
I agree. He’s on something. I’m not familiar enough with drugs to diagnose, but he’s on something.
I think he’s on the “why in the fuck did I get stuck announcing this meaningless game” syndrome.
Yeah, I thought that as well. His mind is everywhere but on the 2 and 3 win teams. But the reason he gets stuck with those games is because he sucks.
Weird thing is he used to be decent and prepared. He’s gone down hill. Something must be going on in his personal life.
This just seems like a bottom basement production. Idiotic announcing, not many stats or insights. Really, what is the point of the P-12 network?
It’s very likely he voted for Trump. Delusion that strong is just weird.
How about a little uptempo? Running short on time.
I didnt hear, is Nall out for the same old precautionary reasons. Would have been a difference maker on a few plays tonight, whuch the team really needed.
I guess, he was in a boot all week again.
He is Das Boot.
Fucking shit, they need to hurry up. This is such a poorly coached offense.
Our 2 minute drill takes about 4 minutes, unfortunately.
That’s the end of the McM era.
Not sure if that was on Bolden or mcm but Bolden was wide open…sorry marcus, it looks like you. Nice knowing you.
That is the definition of taunting and they threw a flag. Bullshit to pick it up
McM is not a DI qb
I can’t stand McMaryion’s body language. He doesn’t have the “it” factor in that department – no passion.
And apparently not a quiet competitor either. 4th down, pitch the
You know a Beav would have been called for that.
I want to stay on the GA wagon, but dumb plays, dumb playcalls, QB chaos, and a 4-18 record make it REALLY hard. If he says that “targeting” was a good call on a good rule, screw him. At least say the rule itself needs tweaking. Everyone knows it.
I know what you’re saying. I’m so conflicted because they seem so close. More than anything it’s the horrid offense and offensive playcalling. D looks good going forward. I don’t know how to feel.
Did they even get 300 yards of offense?
307 baby! 83 on the ground
Luton threw for almost 500 yards tonight. Not sure about him, but McM isn’t the answer, so we need someone to step up. I think 100% healthy Garretson, like in week 1, might be better than McM. Better moxy and all that. McM can hit the big throw here and there, but in clutch moments he never makes plays to extend drives, etc.
I would like to think a healthy Garretson and Nall would make a difference, but if they are never heatlhy can you really speculate on that option? They may start the season that way next year, but then how long will it last?
Oh…. just… whatever!
Play calling= shit soup.
what do you expect with erratic receivers who can’t catch, drop the ball for a fumble after a catch (yes I am looking at you Villamin), run backwards sometimes (Bolden) and minimal to zero downfield passing game?
YOU CAN”T RUN THE BALL EVERY DOWN
Angry and McKalk summed up my sentiment already:
“Those 3 points are on Gary Andersen. Riley-esque clock management there.
If OSU wanted to play offense, they needed to take the timeouts once they got a stop. Not let the clock run then throw passes from your own 1. Awful”
“I don’t know what the hell that 3rd and 3 call from their own 7 was? McM rolls out but no short receivers and I guess no run option? GA alluded to the poor play when he was interviewed at halftime. I think you call your best run play and hope you pick up the first down and then either two minute drill it or run out the clock. Worse case you make UCLA use a timeout. I’ve also concluded that the Beavs have nice running backs all the way around.”
It looks like we have enough on McMaryion to make an informed decision.
I absolutely love how hard this team fights and I am confident GA is the right guy. The defense is completely decimated by injuries and they still play very sound football. The offense just does not have enough talent to put up enough points in this league. It’s like are going to a gun fight with a BB gun. The $64 question is can GA and company find a PAC12 level QB? That’s the only real question make I have about this staff but it’s the number 1 priority for any football team.
I disagree. I’m seeing way too many coaching errors. Defense is definitely better than O but nothing innovative or impressing. The offense is atrocious. Somewhere between poor and piss poor. And seeing the lack of heady coaching, I’m putting this staff at a 9 win ceiling even with all their players installed.
We had weak legs, KO’d again! Where was the jab? Where were the counter punches??
Gonna start working with medicine balls and resistance bands. In a few months, we’ll be good enough to only take it on the chin from almost everyone we play instead of everyone.
Tough to trust a man who can’t take a punch!
… unless that man runs for POTUS.
should be able to make a lower tier bowl game next year with competent qb play.
Should be interesting to see what happens the year after. We’ll see if they were able to develop any of the QBs they actually recruited. That’s important, and it’s not something I’m 100% confident in GA to do.
Per Eggers twitter:
Gary Andersen on penalty woes:
“I refuse to be a part of an undisciplined team. Something has to change. Me, coaches, players — we’ll see.”
That is a bit cryptic. Interested to see if he does something impulsive again.
He is only going to dress 22 players for the last two games…….
I’m certain there was just as much hand wringing in Boulder and Pullman in the last 4-5 years. Yet next Saturday night those two teams will meet at Folsom Field in Boulder with BOTH teams in first place in their divisions. I don’t know what the hell some of you expected but from what MANY of you said after the 2-10 season was you wanted to see improvement. Not getting blown out. They’re doing just that. Now you’ve changed your tune? Just calm the fuck down. Anyone with a brain knew this wasn’t going to be an overnight rebuild. Say what you want but you ALL will wind up with egg on your faces by year 4 or 5. Mark that down Angry
I’m not sure who to mark it down for?
I think about 90% of the site’s readers like GA still.
What a depressing day of football. Only bright spot was the Ducks getting thrashed.
Call me crazy, but I’m good with nine win seasons.
I just want to see the Beavs play in the Rose Bowl (the game on New Years Day) before I die. Hasn’t happened in my lifetime.
Gonna be some grumpy coaches and players today. I passed the caravan of buses as they rolled into Corvallis on 99W just before 5am this morning. Apparently the plane was diverted from Eugene to PDX but then took off from PDX and landed in Eugene over an hour later. I’m no aviation expert so IDK why.
Clock management issues by the coaches?
Tweet! Personal foul, butthurt, 15 yards, do not pass go, do not collect $200
Helluva nice response though. Well done! Upvoted
I to have the Rose Bowl dream…….with either school. Unfortunately they both suck. Luck O da Rodent.
For those of you clamoring to run the ball more? Have a look at the box score
34 rushes, 34 passes. Now granted a few of those were sacks but that’s pretty balanced. You can’t run the ball every fucking down (see the drive that ended in a FG. Beavs got stuffed on 2nd and goal for a loss after running on 1st down). And I would think that most of you would agree that the Beavs lack of a downfield passing game due to QB, WR and TE suckage kind of limits your offense. This WR is extremely disappointing. TE position is non existent since Togai was lost for the season. And then there’s the penalties. This offense seems to be able to move the ball between the 30’s for the most part but when backed up to their own goal or in short yardage situations? The opposing defense can crowd the LOS. You can only do so much on offense for the above stated reasons.
I was pissed when Pierce hit that nice 17 yard run up the middle in the second half and they didn’t go back to it with some pace. Run the same play or a slight variation until it is stopped. Pierce looks like a great RB to me. I don’t know why they can’t play fast in spots, it’s a predictable offense to defend.
What’s everyone’s assessment of McM?
I wrote mine above.
He’s only a RS Freshman, and I think he’s shown enough to stick on the team as a backup. By Junior year he could be quite good. Right now he’s not a playmaker. I notice when the Beavs need plays or conversions most he’s not coming through. Some of that is play calling. Most is on him. But considering how young a player he is and how bad the position is for OSU, I’d be nervous if he transfers.
Redshirt freshman? Nope
Seems to be a poor fit for what they want to do. Probably would have been good in Riley’s system.
Decent thrower, but can’t/ won’t run the read option run game.
Better than Mitch Leidner, but that is a very low bar.
Given the pipeline of Moran, Luton, Willard, is he worth keeping, or should GA encourage him to transfer?
I honestly don’t know. Those 3 are all erratic players at this point and really hard to predict. Last I heard from those at practice is Moran still can’t even throw a spiral…Luton and Williard look similar on film and both look to have completion % issues and INT issues.
My guess is that next year GA goes with Garretson as the starter and Luton as backup.
This entire situation is meh. Hard to predict or get excited about any of them.
Either Luton is settling in or their conference is worse than their non conference. Since they started conference play he’s much better.
64.5% completion percentage
341 yards per game
His stats show wild inconsistency:
Some great games and some awful games. Hopefully the INTs were all tipped balls!
I would be glad with a quarterback with 34 touchdowns to 13 interceptions even if there was inconsistency. Obviously the playing situation doesn’t completely compare, but you get the point.
I thought he was decent last night. I hate that he does’nt pull and run more, but that could improve with more snaps in game time situations. Also, I think what I am seeing is that plays that are called are system based and maybe less about the actual players that you have on the field. Last weeks Portland Tribune column was interesting in so far as GA saying McM had been given the green light to pull and run more. McM even said that aspect was on him to ‘help’ the team more.
The lack of recruiting by Riley his last few years, an understandably lean first recruiting class, Sitake situation etc, massive attrition due to injury and weeding out Riley holdovers ( McM?) has culminated in what we are seeing on the field. I see momentum moving forward that can be built on.
I think you keep McM and let him scrap for a spot. Competition is a good thing and provided each player is getting a fair shake (which I recognize this has been hotly debated in McM’s case), he can only improve.
How many QB’s is typical on a roster?
McM is resilient and tough; took a couple hard shots and lots of pressure last night. He certainly throws the best looking ball of any QB on the current staff, however, his accuracy isn’t consistent enough to qualify him as a top third of the PAC QB. His on field demeanor puts him in the “backup QB” camp.
We’re told he is academically smart but I’m not sold on his FB IQ. A couple of his rushes seemed to be scripted and not based on reading the D; and he seemed to misread the pass D more than once (had 3 receivers covered by 2 DB’s a few times). I don’t see him adjusting at the LOS at all. Maybe the IQ is there and he is unable to relax enough to execute.
He has been given a reasonably fair shot to prove himself. Obviously, he isn’t the answer going forward, but given the current options I expect him to play 6 or 7 of the remaining quarters this year.
As for Baldwin: I still don’t believe we know his actual duties in this system. We may have a three headed OC monster………it doesn’t work.
Baldwin coaches the inside receivers and not the the tight ends as was mentioned earlier. You would compare this to a coach for the safeties and corner backs. The reason for this decision is for receivers to get as much attention as the secondary does. Andersen felt this would help improve the receivers performance. As far as other confusion with Baldwin, I know he often talks with offensive players part of a play that does not go according to plan. You often see him having conversations with the quarterback. McGiven is usually in the booth so to me it makes sense that Andersen would have his most experienced offensive coach give one on one pep talks and pointers on the field. Motivating with words, I personally see as one of Baldwins strengths.
No argument here, you are probably correct. Still, I have suspicions that Baldwin’s place in offensive management goes beyond that of most “position” coaches. I don’t see a single steady hand at the controls. OTOH. maybe it’s just lack of player talent/experience and experience at the OC (OC’s) spot.
having seen all but the Colorado and Stanford games in person: McM is an enthusiastic teammate and involved in the game when not playing. Translation: he’s doesn’t pout and is kinduva grinder in that way. I think his teammates like him and he’s got a good in-game relationship with Bolden. When playing he’s what I would call a tweener. He throws a nice looking ball when he has time and in general terms he seems to be getting more confident and marginally more accurate. And, he’s even getting better with his pump fakes and looking to and finding secondary targets on his progressions. But he quite inconsistent in decision-making and his accuracy. Of all the QB’s that have played for appreciable amounts of time for the Beavs in the “modern era” (i.e., since Riley 1) he has proven superior to only Seth Collins. Garretson is a better QB for this reason: the read-option system OSU runs is by definition a run-first scheme dependent on two principal factors: making the read and, if the read is a keep, run effectively. He is not proficient in either respect. As I have commented before, Seth called his own number to often, McM not nearly enough. I’m absolutely convinced that when the OSU Defense was on the field before the possession that ended up with the fumbled exchange McM was advised: “You have to run the ball more often.” and he attempted to on the fumble, but our RB’s are so used to getting the ball from him that when he tried to pull it during the play in question the RB was surprised and tried to grab harder thinking, in effect, “wait, he can’t be keeping it can he?” His last pick was DA-esque in his inerrant targeting of an opposing player–right on the numbers. Seems like a nice kid; would be good going forward, but has severe limits to the upside which I believe the coaches perceived and why Blount moved ahead of him this year.
Lots of hand wringing about the play calling. Is it possible that the called plays are the only ones they know how to run? Is this a situation where it’s better to be able to run 10 plays well* than 20 not-so-well? Are the players not capable or the coaches not coaching?
I think the multiple coordinator thing is a failure. Get 1 really good coordinator and let him build an offense with the identity the HC wants but with the OCs mechanics.
(* ‘well’ is a relative term, I realize but you get my drift…)
Yes, have one coordinator.
Am I the only one that thinks the Baldwin thing kind of bizarre? That whole situation made no sense to me.
Angry has quite a few posts questioning the change. I always wondered if Baldwin had anything to do with Collins being “QB-elect” from the get go last year and is now paying for it.
I have a friend who played for Baldwin at San Jose St. and I know he’s not a totally objective source, but he says the guy is a brillant offensive mind and loved him as head coach.
I’ve heard from a source that Baldwin is looking for other jobs, too. He’ll probably leave, and IMO that will be a big “what if” situation where if GA only gave him some time/players.
All the Coke jokes and backlash against him wasn’t fair. The guys proven. His offenses put up numbers. Can’t boot him after just one year with StS.
I agree with you, the whole transformation was weird last year. Seemed like a rash decision by GA.
I’d like to know, from the inside, what Baldwin’s actual duties are. He appears to be the senior Offensive mind on the field during games, working with a lot more than “inside receivers”.
Coaching the Tight Ends, I think, though we don’t have any.
I think he throws a nice ball and is actually improving his completion percentage. I’m not sure the interception was totally his fault. He seems fairly calm in the pocket, maybe too calm and misses run opportunities
That being said, you can tell he is uncomfortable running the read option. If that’s the offense, then it’s never going to be a fit. I’m guessing most would agree that McM is not somone you would change an offense for, so I guess the next QB is TBD right now.
He does throw a pretty ball. The problem is that a receiver needs to be in the general vicinity of where the ball might be landing. That’s why I eschewed the pass.
I would simplify the offense, eliminate the pass except for long yardage situations. I would have him run to left, run to the right, run up the middle then punt. Worked for me! (Well sort of)
Having you been consulting for Minnesota?
Duck startung defensive player dismissed after facing multiple charges, including meth use.
Likely the only player on the team using that particular drug…yeah right. Helfrich better try and get that out of the program fast. Sounds like the former AD and Knight and Mullen are going to move him anyway, might as well try to to clean up the program.
Sounds like the players are using the wrong kind of “speed”.
Beavs open as 9 pt favorites vs Arizona this weekend. Game starts at 7:30pst (8:30 for the Arizona players)
So we get to start playing an hour before they do?
That only works if we win the coin toss.
Also, just read that MBB starter STJ has a foot injury amd is in a walking boot.
Game is just now getting underway, vs UTSA
Beavs don’t look so good against UTSA.
Is UTSA any good, or is this a Craig Robinson early season egg?
Once again free throw shooting costs the Beavs a lot of points.
I didn’t get to watch the football game until today. I thought Pierce looked good. They should have ran him and Cook more. More of the same with receivers dropping catchable balls. I was definitely a game they could have won even some 4th stringers in. MCM has a nice throw but not always accurate. Needs to run more. Defense on the field to long. Basically same observations as every week.
I have been satisfied with McMaryion and would very much like him to stay on the roster. I believe the program will become a consistent winner with Andersen, but it will be built more on defense. I think what we have seen in Utah the past 2 seasons is more of the template with decent quarterback play, but a solid defense and quality play in all other facets of the game being the consistent driving force in most wins. When we speak of a quarterback that meets our expectations I get the feeling that only about 5-10 in college every year meet that measurement. I am confident that Andersen’s staff will deliver that type of quarterback, just not every year. This is why it is important for the previously stated foundation for the team to be there to win consistently.
So in summary with this type of description I am fine with a quarterback like McMaryion at the reins and have no problem if he gets beat out.
North Dakota State trolls Michigan about winning at Iowa. Haha!
I am totally on board with GA and I like that he lets his coaches coach, and not micromanage everything, I am not on board with 2 offensive coaches: McGiven and Brennan. I am really hoping there is a heavy evaluation for both at seasons end, which I dont doubt there will be.
I dont mind Marcus but he doesnt make plays when they need to be made.
To be honest, I really think it’s a lot easier to be patient with this rebuild because the Ducks are so awful. If they were still as good as in the recent past, I would likely be more upset with the pace of improvement. It’s just so much easier when Duck fans are miserable 🙂
Wtf happened to Cliff Harris?
Holy sh**, he’s a mess. Didn’t he get into some trouble while in college as well?
He smoked it all.
NiceBeav or OldBeav, can one of you guys put up a thread? Any topic that interests you.
I’m not going to be around for a day and this thread is old. Thanks
Anybody know what happened to seth collins? Somebody showed me some tweets saying he’s in the hospital in critical condition tonight…..
Wow. That is terrible. Wish him well.
That’s pretty serious. A good friend died from bacterial meningitis. Hopefully they caught it soon enough. Man, this team can’t catch a break. It’s almost like it’s cursed…oh wait. Luck ‘o the Beavs.
Bacterial or viral? Either way pretty contagious. Viral pretty hard to treat but not as dangerous. Bacterial deadly if not caught in time.
I thought we had a vaccine for it.
Maybe he wasn’t immunized. Hopefully most of the kids are.
All the best SC, you’re in our thoughts and prayers.
Per Gina the Beavs averaged 2.4 yards per carry against UCLA. What???? Run the ball MORE some of you say? How about that 2nd and goal that got stuffed for a 2 yard loss on the drive that ended with the Beavs last points for a FG?
As I previously stated, you can’t run the ball every down. Well you can bit with a non legitimate minimal downfield passing game it kind of limits your options. No matter who the offensive coordinator is
The problem is we are a young team which equals limited plays. McM does well on the quick slants if only our receivers can learn to catch it. We need to mix up the limited plays we do have a little better. For the most part our run game is not great except for those occasional break-out runs that puff up the yards per carry. In the UCLA game Pierce had some decent runs but no major break away like Nall has had. The UCLA game probably would have looked a lot different if we had Bright and Nall playing.
Agreed. Add in 119 yards in penalties and it’s not hard to figure out. IIRC the Beavs longest run Saturday night was 17 yards. Last year it was “Get rid of Baldwin!” Now it’s “Get rid of McGiven”
It won’t matter who is calling the plays right now
The offense is so limited by QB and WR play. There are no real PAC QBs on the roster currently, hopefully Moran gets bigger/stronger and pans out, but I can’t imagine any current players starting at another PAC school.
I know there’s not much in the cupboard that looks like a high probability of success, but I am hoping Luton can stand tall in the pocket an d get the ball downfield. He’d probably be around 2:1 TD:INT as he adjusts to PAC competition, hopefully get to at least 3:1 by season’s end.
Still need to get another QB in the pipeline and some TEs as well.
The D will come along just fine once they get out of the infirmary….
TE’s? Yes please.
More basketball thoughts –
1. New guys are struggling a lot.
– McLoughlin shows flashes and hopefully the game will slow down for him by conference play.
– Dew has good length and should be a good defender. But his offense should really be limited to put backs. Needs to be a glue guy. Rebounding and defense.
– Stacy is really struggling. 10 turnovers and only 2 assists is really really bad.
– Manuel looks like he’ll be a regular in the rotation. Should provide solid minutes off the bench.
2. Free throw shooting regressed.
3. The offense is slow. More than a few times, it took a long time for the Beavs to run any kind of play. Getting into the windshield wiper offense. Back and forth on the perimeter.
4. Defense looked out of sync of sorts.
I was at Gill last night for the UTSA game. A couple of comments.
Keondre Dew is a good athlete with a live body and physical toughness but limited skills. He can bang inside, and he drives hard to the hoop, but needs to finish better. He should help the Beavers on the boards, and with their interior defense, especially once he better understands his assigned role on the team, and what the coaches need him to do. If he’s coachable, he should improve a lot as the season progresses — the physical talent is there.
Tres Tinkle filled the stat line last night. That was important, with Stephen Thomson Jr. missing the game due to injury. But, personally, I thought Tres forced a number of shots when he should have passed. I was watching Tres’s teammates, and trying to see whether they were getting annoyed with some of Tres’s decisions. Can’t say anyone betrayed annoyance. More important, they didn’t seem to be reluctant (yet) to pass the ball to Tres. But, going forward, this may be something to watch with this team. Tres hoisted up 18 shots from the field last night (making 7 — for a 39% shooting percentage). A number of these shots were more like prayers to the refs (prayers that were rewarded with foul shots perhaps more often than they should have been). Especially where it’s the coach’s son, this may not endear a player to his teammates.
He’s that type of player. He’ll be better at drawing obvious contact once the lid comes off from outside. But there was still valid contact. I’d like to see the bigs make a hole for him and get rewarded more often with dump-offs… with Jaquori as well.
Jaquori was playing stiffly until the second half. He was much more loose in the second half and really held it together in crunch time. That he can score from anywhere and has body control that will be spectacular with a year of weight training and footwork drills is really nice to watch. He has tools everywhere on the floor and manages the O with poise. That last is what surprises me the most. He’s going to be good to great this year, and he has upside.
Dew is the glue guy. Tell him the O won’t run through him, but if he gets boards he’s green lit on put backs. He played with effort and looked like he was out of place on the floor many times. The rest of the team except for Drew looked like they had a hangover in the first half. Dew also doesn’t have a left hand. That cost him an easy bucket.
I can’t wait for Ben and Stevie to be full strength. But, I have to wait.
Stacy is out of sync with the rest of the team. Muller and Dahlen looked more like they have played with the team for a while. That’s not so much a “duh” statement as much as it’s meant to show he’s just not familiar with where others’ spots are when he’s on the move… and they look like they don’t know where he’s going, so they don’t always find their spots. He needs to stop taking the extra dribble and/or leaving his feet if a drive is stopped by help… unless the bigs are realizing help is leaving them open for a play at the rim.
I know Tinks wants to get everyone on the floor and see what mixes work best. But he didn’t let the team get into any rhythm with all the subs in the first half… and even in the second to a degree. I suppose all the ticky-tack foul calls didn’t help. But most of those came because the spacing on the floor kept changing.
Both games have been painful to watch–can’t do it in real time, must DVR thru commercials and fouls.
Watched the end of the first half between UCLA and CSUN last night–Don MacLean was saying that the amount of foul calls in that game is part of the reason why college basketball doesn’t draw fans. Guess there is an emphasis on “freedom of movement”, meaning any sort of hand check will earn a whistle.
It would be unwatchable if I had no rooting interest in a team.
There’s going to be a funky period in hoops while the youth learn not to play Michael Jordan defense and start using their feet and spacing.
