Game Week-SUU and General thread

105

Oregon State was handled pretty easily by Ohio State last week, as most expected. We saw some reasons for optimism and the Beavs appear to have the talent and coaching to reach 3-4 wins this season, but likely not much more than that. Baby steps.

Southern Utah is coming up Saturday, 5PM, in Coach Smith’s first game at Reser. I’m sure “The Return” will be pushed heavily this week in advertising by the AD.

Are you going? No students on campus yet and a Big Sky opponent are the recipe for a half full Reser on Saturday, even given the optimal start time. Does the return draw in a few more fans and make the crowd look respectable?

There should be a few official visitors this week(will update names in the thread later) as well as several unofficial. OSU seems to be trying hard to encourage local athletes to come to any and all home games by sending out invites. Hopefully some choose to come see us over oregon vs PSU.

Official:

Gianni Hunt(PG verbal mbb commit)

Feel free to talk about anything outside of SUU as well.

  1. Posted this in the last thread as well…

Been hoping to hear some news on Keyshawn Johnson Jr one way or the other this week, but so far nothing.
School started at Arizona on August 20th, and he still isn’t on their football roster. I’m not sure what this all means since he is technically enrolled at UofA and is listed in their student directory. Can a player still be eligible for transfer if they haven’t actually joined a team?

One theory (ok, my theory) is that he is still on the market. With Oregon State starting school on September 20th, this still gives him time to enroll at OSU and a handful of other schools on the 4 quarter system. It would make sense, given his connections to the coaching staff (Riley/Bray/Rodgers/VanDeReit) as well as Avery Johnson and his high school teammate Tristan Gebbia, that he could be considering Oregon State.

He also is a guy who comes with a little baggage, getting pulled out of Nebraska by his dad last year after being caught with weed in his dorm room, and he seems to fit the mold of a “high ego, high output”
4* WR HS recruit who performed well in the Nebraska Spring game, but hasn’t played any games yet in college.

What I’d like to know, if he’s available, do fans think he would even be a guy worth taking a risk on? Do you take a chance on a guy based on talent alone and ignore any character issues, or do we still with our current formula and move forward.
I saw Angry tweeting over the weekend about OSU recruiting too many filler type players and not enough “game changes”. Does Keyshawn Jr represent a game changer worth taking on?

Of course, this could all be moot if Keyshawn is added to the UA roster today, but I’d still like to hear your comments.

      • I absolutely think you take the risk. OSU has to be willing to take some risks to get the talent. If JS is the right guy than he and his staff should create a culture that can handle a few risks.

        • I agree. And reading the comments by his dad after he yanked him out of Lincoln it sounds like he’s trying to keep in the kid’s ear. Key Sr also seems to have some level of respect for MR. Perhaps that foolish bike rider can pedal on over and have a talk for his friends in Corvallis.

          • “We were ready to flip to Oregon State and were just waiting for Mike Riley to show up with the paperwork. He said he was headed our way over a month ago, but he never showed, so we decided to stay at Arizona.
Turns out Mr Riley was on his way, but had only made it to some town called Medford so far. We didn’t have the heart to tell him it was too late now, so he’s still headed our way with the paperwork.”

    • FYI, I’m in the camp of taking the risk and acquiring the high risk high reward guys, assuming the risk doesn’t involve any past violent offenses. I don’t care if a guy gets popped for weed in the offseason. I also think having a high profile dad in Keyshawn Sr would be beneficial to the program. Sounds like his dad actually disciplined him at Nebraska rather than Riley. Keyshawn Senior seems to be very interested in his son keeping his nose clean if he wants to play football.

    • Re: Keyshawn jr.: Here I think we must apply the WWDD (What Would Dennis Do?) matrix. It’s a no-brainer in the situation OSU finds itself in. Take him.

    • Just finished watching his film…doesn’t look to have elite speed and is a bit wider than I would have imagined. Looks a lot like Donte Moncrief of the Colts in terms of build and style of player. Moncrief isn’t a game changer in the NFL, but he’s a nice player. I think you take a shot if he’s interested, but I think there are a lot of recruits who can fill that role. I personally want to see more speed at WR. We have some 4-star big bodies, but speed is just good. None are going to make the D nervous and require the safety over the top that opens up the entire offense. We need a guy like that more than KJJ.

Concerning that he signed 2 years ago and has yet to play a down. He’s behind the curve, especially for a 4-star prospect.

      • He has basically only used his redshirt year, plus 1 game up to this point. Since he wasn’t on Nebraska’s roster in 2017, he’s supposedly eligible this season. So if he were on Arizona’s roster, he would be able to play right now as a RS Freshman. (That whole situation seems questionable to me already, why is he not on Arizona’s roster? And why is nobody really talking about it?)

I get your argument for speed. I think we have about 4 speed options for this season in Bradford, Short, Allen and Flemings. Actually, WR is the one area where we seem to have the most depth this season, so taking on another question mark receiver may not make sense, even if he is a “4*” talent. Will be curious how this whole thing even plays out.

        • I’m not sure any of those WRs scare a secondary so much they move a safety over the top, though. Bradford and Allen have good speed but not elite. Not sure on Flemings. Short looked more like a big body than speed guy. Our WRs are pretty good, but if you get one guy with elite speed who can make plays that opens up the entire field. Basically playing 10 vs 11 at that point. I don’t see that in Johnson Jr. I’d take him for the pedigree, name value, and to maybe get recruiting momentum.

What’s up with Kolby Taylor? Another guy who isn’t super fast, but if he’s healed he should be out there making plays — very fluid before the injury.

I think we need one speed WR and RB, then some game changers on D (even if they’re raw…get guys who are disruptive at this point in the recruiting cycle). More valuable than a non-disruptive filler who is just a steady eddy.

          • Practice reports on Taylor made it sound like he had a pretty good camp and should be a factor this season. Don’t think he made it onto the field vs Ohio St, but with Luton and Blount out for the 2nd half, there weren’t many passing opportunities anyway. Hoping we see a more diverse passing game against SUU, just so we can see what our options look like. Hernandez/Hodgins/Bradford appear to be the top 3 guys, with several other options to take some reps in rotation roles next week

          • Hodgins had 2 pretty tought throws come his way I can remember where he had to battle the defender in the air. Nobody caught the first one and Hodgins somehow came down with the 2nd showing pretty impressive hands. Other than that, I don’t remember many throws going his way. He might have had 1 or 2 more catches
            Would have to check stats

          • Can I use that?

It’s so witty and so so unlike anything that has ever been said on the interwebs. I can only imagine the immense brainpower that went into developing its every syllable.

A syllable is a unit of pronunciation having one vowel sound, with or without surrounding consonants, forming the whole or a part of a word.

  2. I’m going to the game. One of the big questions is who will be the starting QB? I feel bad for Lunton but I’d go with Blount either way on this one.

      • Is he injury prone or simply finding himself in the unenviable position of playing behind a terrible line?

I think anyone playing QB for the foreseeable future will end up being ‘injury prone.’

        • I mean in no way am I a Luton fan but the two plays he was hurt on had nothing to do about the skill of the line.

          1. WSU: A play where multiple guys were breaking open to throw for a first down but instead Luton was lagte on his reads and ended up getting drilled on a dirty hit while scrambling for the first down.

          2. Ohio St: A designed screen play where another dirty and late hit concussed him

          Let’s call a spade a spade

          • I think the discussion to allow him to continue playing should be had. The back can heal, but the head was the big issue. If I was him, and I had any hope for my longevity, I’d be against going back out there.

  3. This is the type of player we have to go after if we want to win and we need them in volume.

High talent/low risk kids aren’t coming to Corvallis anytime soon.

  4. Half full or half empty? I think it’ll be about 35% filled with actual people. But announced attendance of 25-30k. Maybe get everyone to sit on the new side so it looks like people are there.

Won’t be seeing a lot of wide shots on TV.

New alcohol policy will be fun to see. What kind of beers do they go with? The ones on the terrace or a more generic choice?

    • Az @ OSU September 22 might be a fun one to attend…league opener, students back…weather should be good, could be competitive and Az QB is entertaining. Should be compettive(?), winnable? Hoping for an early afternoon start time.

Also, Beavs could come in with a winning record of 2-1….

      • I’ll actually be back in Oregon for that game visiting my parents and attending that game. I’m looking forward to seeing an improved defense by then?

    • Yeah, good idea, go with the spring game approach, put everyone on the new side and look respectable.

I was looking at ticket prices yesterday on stubhub, nose bleeders are running $7, you can get old side 50 yard line for $25, albeit pretty low, at least lower than I want to sit. So still contemplating whether to grab a couple.

I’m actually ok with the new beer policy, although I think that will leave a me $100 shorter at the end of the day, I generally would drink 2 at a game.

  5. What is JS’s history handling problem children? Any indications of his ability in this area? Did he gain insight by working under Petersen?

The question of high talent/high risk players will come up again and each case is unique to a degree. I’d like to know more about JS’s history here (if any history is known).

    • Chris Petersen had little tolerance for problem players. He kicked Marcus Peters, a 1st rounder, off one of his early teams at UW. I think it’s easier to bring questionable characters into the mix once the culture is established. Kind of like New England with Corey Dillon then Randy Moss then LeGarrette Blount.

    • Really it seems like the defense is 2-3 solid 3* DTs away from respectable. Not gonna beat an Ohio State type respectable but not get crushed and keep the game close enough for the offense to do it’s thing type of unit.

  6. Bizarre news story of the day.

    https://www.yaktrinews.com/news/police-arrest-man-for-sexually-assaulting-beaver-in-columbia-park/790375468

Police arrest man for sexually assaulting beaver in Columbia Park

KENNEWICK, Wash.– A man has been arrested for animal cruelty after a woman said she witnessed him sexually assaulting a beaver in Columbia Park late Monday night.

The woman said she saw someone run the animal over with a car and then tried to help it by wrapping it in a towel before going home to get a container to put it in.

The woman claims she returned to the site about 30 minutes later and found a man on top of the beaver with his pants unzipped.

The witness then called police to report the incident.

When officers arrived, they arrested 35-year old Richard Delp, who was also found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine.

He is facing charges of animal cruelty and possession of a methamphetamine.

The witness said the beaver did not survive.

  7. And I don’t recall this being in the books he sources, but he should also add the bible as a source.
    Matthew 7:21-23
    Luke 12:42-49
    Hebrews 10:26-27

      • who would that be. I know Yeskie gets thrown out there a lot but I am not sure he has the leadership skills, his expertise has always seemed more technical to me. Pat Casey’s best qualities IMO were always of the inspiration kind, he always got kids to do what was best for the team rather than always doing what is best for themselves. I don’t follow the inner workings of the team close enough but I am not sure if the Beavers have someone that can fill that void on staff.

  8. Osu will have the pick of the litter for the next head coach. Will be a very sought after job. Almost anyone is within reach even current head coaches at big schools.

    • Unless the “sensitive” component to this story is something Luke related and it damages the program. Just seems a little unusual considering Casey reassessed at the end of the season and already said he would be back this year.

As for next coach, we just gave Yeskie a huge raise to keep him here after the title game. I think he ends up being the next coach and they backfill pitching coach duties, and maybe Casey sticks around as an advisor temporarily, as long as his relationship with the school is still solid

  9. I predicted this before the season started, then after all of the Hiemlich media garbage, then during the post-season, then during the CWS. Many reasons were given for why he wouldn’t leave, but it seemed like the perfect team, and to win it all makes it a “Go out on your own terms as a Champion” moment.

Now he needs to insist that Barnes vacate his office by May 2019.

Best case for OSU athletics that Casey takes over the entire Athletic Department.

  10. Announcement says that Bailey will be the HC for the 2019 season, followed by a national search. That probably means yeskie will go for a HC opportunity elsewhere.

I’d say Andrew checketts would be a favorite.

    • That’s what I’m thinking too. He doesn’t sound 100% gone. He even said he will have nothing to do. He needs a break, but I could see him coming back

    • i think it’s a two year hiatus to watch Joe play bit after that I think Casey takes another job. I think he was pissed at the administration for not getting better support for the Luke situation.

      • Eggers tweets that Casey “will serve as associate AD at Oregon State, helping out primarily with fund-raising and as an ambassador.

If that is true I think you are correct; he’ll be back coaching (somewhere) before long. Casey said, “I’m a coach”, if he isn’t coaching coaches in his new position then it seems unlikely he’ll be satisfied/happy.

Nice to learn that the right deck area at Goss Stadium will be named “Casey’s Corner.”

      • agree that the Heimlich deal wore Casey down. He never got the support from Ray that he thought he and Luke deserved; more the previous season than this last one.

        • You tell me what “support” OSU and Ray were supposed to “give” beyond what the institution was legally bound to do, and we can discuss the negative that never happened.

    • in regard to which, pay close attention to the way Barnes hesitates and otherwise stumbles in response to the question about why go interim and not just fill permanently now.
