Just noticed that coaches hot seat has Smith at #19 between Harbaugh and Holgorson.
I can’t imagine he’s even in the yellow in reality but can’t blame them for overestimating and assuming the University Leadership and Athletic Department have any expectations at this point.
People laughed last week when I said he should be on the hot seat.
He should be for his coaching/personnel decisions and that reason alone. #19 seems about right. If he loses the remaining games this year and/or doesn’t change QB and K then he should shoot up. I’m not as bearish on Smith as say a Riley, and I do see some improvement and stability in the program, but he’s showing his flaws and limitations.
I am still laughing… year two and he’s on the hot seat?… we are so good at hiring the best coaches… I think we’ve proven that no one wants to come here… I am willing to give this guy time as long as we are improving, which seems to be the case… You’ve even said all coaches have flaws… I’ll be interested if he has the balls to fire a coordinator when they can’t get it done… something Riley could never do
Now you are saying the national media is right? Well they also said we should start Luton… something you have a hard time agreeing with and you brought up that the media doesn’t know shit… now in this situation all the sudden they are knowledgeable?
You are right about winning the games though… we’ll see how that plays out
He said at the beginning of the season when he made the move to LB that he was expecting to redshirt. I don’t think it’s because he intends to transfer, but just to salvage a year of eligibility that he lost having to go the juco route as a freshman instead of redshirting.
Missing the first half. Hope the Beavs make it worthwhile to come home and watch the 2nd half.
GoBeavs.
Picking UCLA because I don’t think we can stop a team that isn’t afraid to play 4 down football. Also hope we start playing more 4 down once inside the 50.
Why was Chip smiling like a lunatic after that stop?
Wonder if they told him he’s gone if he loses this game because it makes no sense to go for it at your 30.
Our back up kickers are garbage but perhaps they can make extra points at least… or just go for two every time, we may end up with more points in the long run
the normal logic model here is to run a two minute drill to stay in the track meet. The one thing OSU can’t afford here is a pick. I say run the ball or run a draw or screen
Three terrible play calls in that last series. That sucks almost as much as that loser
Choukair missing the extra point. Again, as has happened so many times, the choker Choukair takes the wind out of our sails.
Beavs recovered from the bungled possession. The damn thing about missed kicks is that the setback is more than the loss of a single point; the psychological impact is equally damaging
UCLA shouldn’t have had that last possession. Total Yards for UCLA getting close to OSU’s. Not a great indicator but it shows UCLA is moving the ball. Big first possession for Beav defense to start 2nd half.
so let me say this at the present juncture in the game. OSU 27, UCLA 17. The Beavs defense has not looked very good since the last third of the first quarter. And if UCLA continues to score with some regularity, which looks likely at this point, as OSU begins to lose its composure, the fate of this game resides on the OSU OFFENSE being able to move the chains, principally by running the ball, or they will lose. If Smith and Lindgren think they can win this by having Luton sling it around they are wrong.
And that’s why sound and consistent mechanics/accuracy are more important than padded stats. Those kind of awful throws on routine plays are absolute killers and he’s done that his whole career.
Luton with a chance to redeem himself. A TD drive here would put some pressure on the UCLA qb. Hopefully, Smith and Lindgren noted how tight Luton was on that last throw Run the ball
since they’re doing everything predictable and terrible, is this where luton is overconfident and his first pick comes to give them even more momentum back?
I said that 2 quarters into OK State. Guys got a lady to take care of and with his highlight real hes looking at atleast a 3rd round contract. Thanks for the TD’s brotha.
I know I’m belaboring this point, but notice how much vigor the defense seems to play with when the offense is productive. (notwithstanding the 75 TD run)
I have no idea if Luton is the right QB, but one thing I know for sure is that Hodgins is a great receiver. Unfreaking believable that he is able to pile up these numbers when everyone knows he is getting the ball.
Beavers had a Biletnikoff and a Groza award winner on a 5-6 team. Only Smilin’ Mike could have the best receiver and kicker in the nation and finish with a losing record!
Per post game write-up — “Linebacker Avery Roberts was a menace in UCLA’s backfield, making three tackles for loss and finishing with eight total tackles.”
I called him Wheels last game. I didn’t know it was serious!!!
I only caught the second half of the game. It looked like you guys were panicking. Fair, considering the Hawaii game, but UCLA is SUPER bad. And we’re not terrible, we just have refused to play a full game until now.
Chip looked determined to stop the run, so we threw for 5 TDs. Defense game up some TDs, but Chip offenses will do that.
Other than the 75 yard TD, thought the defense was consistent (still bad), but made UCLA chew up time on most of the drives — especially since the Beav offense scored so quickly on those first quarter TDs — figured the D would be winded by the end of the game, and they showed it. Overall, probably good enough to be tenth in the conference, at least a couple of baby steps better than last year.
the defense is not great, but it holds its own. What’s that, 3 games against D1 competition that they have held to 31 points? I know it’s not popular here or anywhere else in Beaver nation, but Gary Anderson was right when he said that to win with any consistency in the Pac 12 conference you have to be able to score close to 40 points
31!!! I’ve picked “31” for the last two opponents after the Hawaii game….LOL. Not gloating, just totally random guess that goes with college football. I might go with 31 for the rest of the season with this offense….hahaha
Indeed. GA’s underappreciated point is that offenses in the PAC 12 are generally so productive that even good to great defenses will have 30 points scored on them on average and if you can’t match that productivity offensively, you won’t win. This is why he went chasing after Luton, following the Seth and Garretson fiascos, not realizing that he had a guy (McMaryon) who could move the chains consistently.
Onu-HIcks is not good, I don’t know if the freshman year David Morris is ever coming back, but there has to be someone better on the bench. It’s a scary thought that there might not be.
Jalen Moore dressed but didn’t play also. Might be fantasy, but a healthy Moore and Morris in the secondary would be a significant upgrade if they can ever get to that point.
Beavs beat a bad football team. If only the Hawaii and Stanford game could have turned out better.
Tough game next week.
Beavs better improve a lot this week because Utah will be a hand full.
Beavs have got to be able to run the ball or Utah will eat us alive, Beavs had no running game tonight. If you take away a 59 yd run by Pearce and Lutons 19 yarder, beavs averaged around 3 yds a carry and that was vs. UCLA.
Lutons numbers again look great but it still feels like he missed on possibly more.
Choukair must be replaced.
Hodgins we better enjoy him while we have him because he’s gone.
Defense and defensive schemes suck, I feel it is coaching more than personal.
GO BEAVS!!!!
Jalen Moore did not play again. I’m assuming when he’s healthy Hicks gets fewer snaps? I think Hicks was benched for a while in the second half. He’s a bad tackler, he’s soft in coverage.
The Beavs run game looked good early, as it has in most games. After settling in, teams have determined to stop the OSU run game; the logic being: let’s see if Luton can beat us with his arm. In the first four games Luton had his moments, with the fate of the game being in doubt, but the opposition’s focus on the OSU run game was rewarded because Luton proved sufficiently inconsistent that their stratagem of focusing on the OSU run paid off. It would have paid off last night EXCEPT Luton was able to move the ball through the air in the 3 of the 4 quarters. That one quarter’s worth of productivity on the margin is why OSU won.
Conclusion: against a bad team, OSU can win with 3 quarters worth of good QB play. it will take four quarters worth of good QB play for OSU to beat an average Pac 12 team. The defense is probably not good enough to beat the highest caliber Pac 12 opponent no matter how effective Luton is
I don’t really get the Luton hate. He’s not perfect but he doesn’t turn the ball over, gets TDS and packs in yards. I’m glad people are excited for Gebbia but I doubt he’s actually our best chance to win this season.
Lindgren likely to say, “we took what the D gave us”. He’s got a point, Bruin pass D is nearly the worst statistically in the country. Still, some runs could have helped the clock situation.
As others have mentioned, JJ is not healthy yet. I wonder if Smith gave him downs primarily because he had lots of relatives/friends at the Rose Bowl.
disagree. putting in three tight ends, with Luton under center, signaled a run, but Luton found our guy all alone in the defensive backfield. play of the game. brilliant call.
Gotta give coaches credit; 5 penalties for 33 yds and no TO’s. Players make Plays?……and Coaches influence greatly how those players operate.
Still hate the poor clock management.
Luton finally plays more than 30 minutes and they win. Who’da thunk it. And it only took him 6 years to figure it out. Props to the defense for finally making some stops, ucla is terrible but that has to pump up the confidence a few notches. Well done beavs.
Yeah, I thought the D has been gradually improving. That 4th down stop early in the game was huge and set the tone. They’ll never be good this year, but they can maybe be a “bend but don’t break” type D.
#10 was awful he looks like he’s afraid. Morris would make this defense so much better. And I do not like playing off so far with our corners. We give up 5-7 yd passes on 3rd and short.
I’m good with bend-don’t-break as long as their is a turn-over or two given the amount of plays (opportunities) the opposing offense has to execute — can lead to miscues, etc.
UCLA ran 89 frickin’ plays and committed zero turnovers. Chip’s stupidity or arrogance with going for it in the first quarter and Smith’s cleverness with the pooch kick seemed to be the difference in the game. Bruins couldn’t make up those 14 points.
Yeah, there was a tipped pass and the fumble-score by UCLA — other than those opportunities, this team is light years away from being even a bend-don’t-break pedigree — there is just not enough talent on this team to create or pressure the offense into a TO opportunity. Beavs have had two back-up QBs come in and look rather comfortable….gotta get better in pass pressure.
The increase in TFL’s is helping them get off the field in some situations, but there is still a lot of work to be done. The improvement with some of the players like Rashad Jr. and Aydo is noticeable. The corners give so much cushion that even a backup QB is going to be comfortable unless there is pressure. When they can’t get pressure like the second half last night they get picked apart.
Happy to be wrong about this one. I thought the mobile qb that led UCLA to a win over WSU would be playing….Chip played it poorly not kicking the 3 and saving time when down by 17. It was a three score game and he wasted time.
That said, good win. Beavs should be 4-1 right now, which would be encouraging for recruiting
Utah @ OSU is tempting to attend in person…can’t stand Utah and the stadium needs to be loud.
Utah will forever be hamstrung by their complete inability to evaluate QBs. Has Utah ever had a legit Pac12 quality quarterback? Not that I can remember at least. Seems they always have that guy that tees off on shitty Banker defenses but shits his pants on the big stage.
A good response after last week’s close loss. Shows the team has not given up. Have quite an offensive identity now. Defense is improving incrementally.
Good play calls helped by weird decision by Kelly to go for it early. Not to say the Beavs wouldn’t have capitalized but it certainly accelerated the process. What a call with the inside/squib/drop kick. Can’t do it again for a while but it worked!
Utah will be tough if they have their rb. If not, it’ll be a good fight.
I don’t expect anyone to see everyone jumping on the bandwagon. But the truth of the situation is that the Beavers ARE still in charge of their own destiny in the Pac12 Championship. They’re in the drivers seat!!!
Thanks to all. As the game progressed I kept thinking how much fun I would have reading the ongoing comments you all made during the game. I wasn’t disappointed. From “what the fuck is happening here?” (first quarter)..” to “oh well, we’ll find a way to lose”…(second quarter)…to “This is great!” or “That was a terrible call!” or “Luton is (or did) some terrible thing that is going to cost us the game!” or “he threw a nice touchdown there but there were some bad ones before that!” (and so on in the second half). Then the final fourth quarter minutes of secretly praying we would win but saying out loud “We’ll find a way to lose, etc.” just to prepare in case that was the outcome. It’s fun to read the ebb and flow of outlooks and comments made in real time.
With Colletto redshirting, Angry Beaver gets tabled (unless they find someone else to run it). I hope he can develop into an effective linebacker, appears to be a good athlete.
Does anyone have any thoughts on red-shirting Jamar? This would be the week for the decision to be made if I’m calculating correctly. I would seriously consider it. If Pierce gets hurt, they could always pull it if he’s healthy.
one of the more positive outcomes from the UCLA game is that Luton has proved he can get the first down by diving or driving ahead. Now imagine this: after doing that on 3rd and short, and better yet, 4th and short, imagine dropping back from under center and hitting Hodges in a crossing route for a long gainer
Luton played his best game, I think I saw only two bad throws and there were a couple drops.
Hopefully a second WR can step up consistently so the offense can keep moving when Hodgins is double teamed. Lindsey looks like he can be that guy but I think he’s dropped at least a couple passes this year.
Jefferson should sit if he’s not feeling 100%. He looked lethargic when he got his carries. Pierce looks like he’s playing for a job next year. Redshirt should be discussed.
Flemings getting trucked by Pierce was hilarious.
Coaches made the right play calls at the right time on offense.
Defense looked better and faster but lots of work still to do. Still susceptible to big plays. Whittley didn’t do anything in the game. Aydon is really trying this year to make plays.
4 of the 5 top tacklers for the game were linebackers. That is a good sign. Last year’s top tackler was a safety and it was by a lot.
Everyone was confused by the drop kick. Camera guy, announcers, UCLA players, referees, me. Good scouting and execution by special teams. Didn’t even notice it was Rodriguez on the field and not Choukair.
It was nice to see the Beavs close out the game and not just hold on at the end.
I agree with everything but Whit, when hes in they either double team him or he pushes into the pocket and redirects plays. Some of those linebacker plays are driven by Whit making the pocket a horseshoe.
Totally out of left field, but I still don’t understand why the administration wouldn’t schedule 13 games when it’s there for the taking? Get a Group of Five cupcake on the schedule at home. It lead to the Riley 10 win season. I don’t want to see another road game against Hawaii unless there’s 13 games.
Maybe not well-stated, but that was my point. They played Idaho and Eastern Washington which helped them get to the Sun Bowl and 10 wins. They were strategic about it. There have been two seasons since that I’m aware of where they passed on playing 13 games.
Both rodents have impressive wins! Too bad the Powerball is only 80 million, as obviously this means I am destined to win. 500 mill and Parker would be calling games from Angrybeavs Pressbox at Beavergopher Stadium.
The Beavs should be in the Civil War.
I’ve seen the Ducks a few times now and they look like shit each time. Definitely not the same Ducks. Mario is a bad coach, too. I’d argue the Beavs have a better offense this year. So we’ll see if the D keeps progressing toward a bend-but-don’t-break style.
The only direct comparison we have is Stanford. We scored 28 on them and the ducks scored 21. Ofc Washington wasted Hawaii and then lost to Stanford so likely not a good comparison haha
I saw them actually playing to win throughout UCLA. They had been so close twice and they are finally breaking through those mental hurdles. Looking forward to seeing them surprise some people down the road.
I tihnk this year we will get a most improved trophy and next year Smith is Pac 12 COTY
Luton had the best game of his career and put together a game-long performance I didn’t believe he was capable of. He managed the speed of the game well and looked more comfortable managing his body in the pocket. All stuff he’s shown improvement with under this staff. He still threw some backside-earhole rockets and asked a lot out of his receivers. He had a few of his patented mechanical breakdowns and atrocious misses in routine drive-killing situations that must drive Lindgren nuts. But if he could find a way to stay disciplined and clean those moments up they could have a shot to win a couple more games.
The defense again looked improved and the players that are beginning to put it together and play with aggression are starting to show themselves. Still very talent deficient, but there is tangible improvement and they played hard for all 4 quarters even when they got beat badly. Hard to ask for more than that at this point in Year 2 given how bad they were last year.
The coaching was better but not perfect. Was frustrating watching them save a minute or so of clock for UCLA on that 4th quarter drive but bailed themselves out by getting some first downs. Won’t get that lucky against a better team as we saw against Stanford.
Overall, it’s a good win for the program and gives a lot of credence to the staff to keep asking the kids to buy-in and compete. But after watching the game a few times my expectations moving forward are tempered by just how horrifically bad UCLA looked. #firechipkelly
…gives a lot of credence to the staff to keep asking the kids to buy-in and compete.
^^^^^^That is the big takeaway from this game. Finally a W in conference as a reward for the work they’ve been putting in.
This coaching staff, while frustrating at times, isn’t dumb. They may be a little nerdy, but it’s looking like JS has the degree of willingness to take risks that Riley never had. One thing sure, the Dawgs are missing JS.
Last week Stanford sucked and now bad to lose to them. Possibly true but when you guys post this, what is your facial expression. I cannot imagine you guys ever have done anything hard?
“The house cleaning must start now. It’s too likely late to bring in a new coach, so someone already on-staff will probably be promoted. But not one of them merits that. Believe it or not, Mike Riley might be a suitable interim hire, as he has DC and HC experience and knows the PAC12.”
Fans have no patience. I talked to a high school football coach last week. Young guy, only 35. Has already accomplish complete turn arounds at two different schools. He told me if he doesn’t have this current program winning on the 3 rd year they will be calling for his head.
1st. Go beavs
Go Beavs!
Tied for first!!!
Go Golden Bears (this week)
I’ll be watching via satellite TV on my yacht. Eat your heart out BG!
that was a joke, to whoever down-voted
.And I have to row a boat….
http://www.coacheshotseat.com/CoachesHotSeatRanking.htm
Just noticed that coaches hot seat has Smith at #19 between Harbaugh and Holgorson.
I can’t imagine he’s even in the yellow in reality but can’t blame them for overestimating and assuming the University Leadership and Athletic Department have any expectations at this point.
People laughed last week when I said he should be on the hot seat.

I’m not as bearish on Smith as say a Riley, and I do see some improvement and stability in the program, but he’s showing his flaws and limitations.
Chip Kelly should move to #1 if he loses today.
I am still laughing… year two and he’s on the hot seat?… we are so good at hiring the best coaches… I think we’ve proven that no one wants to come here… I am willing to give this guy time as long as we are improving, which seems to be the case… You’ve even said all coaches have flaws… I’ll be interested if he has the balls to fire a coordinator when they can’t get it done… something Riley could never do
You can laugh all you want, but the National media, which should be more objective than any of us, has him #19 on the hot seat.
He better start winning games and getting the right players on the field starting tonight.
As a program legend, he gets more leeway so he’s not on the hot seat yet. Still working with inherited goods. If Gebbia is a bust next year, then yes.
Now you are saying the national media is right? Well they also said we should start Luton… something you have a hard time agreeing with and you brought up that the media doesn’t know shit… now in this situation all the sudden they are knowledgeable?
You are right about winning the games though… we’ll see how that plays out
Those poor bastards struggling with Northwestern. Not a surprise but funny.
Nebraska won. Acted like they just beat Alabama
same thing my wife said
Didn’t we have a guy on here that liked tartan end zones? I was just looking at tennesee’s
Crazy leg Colletto redshirts
https://twitter.com/kerryeggers/status/1180631222705197056
Maybe Gebbia will finally get some meaningful snaps
maybe he’ll come in on goal line situations instead of Colletto
Weird move when we have so much LB depth, right?
He said at the beginning of the season when he made the move to LB that he was expecting to redshirt. I don’t think it’s because he intends to transfer, but just to salvage a year of eligibility that he lost having to go the juco route as a freshman instead of redshirting.

GoBeavs.
Picking UCLA because I don’t think we can stop a team that isn’t afraid to play 4 down football. Also hope we start playing more 4 down once inside the 50.
Let’s gooooooo! Don’t fart it up beaver bruhs.
Public betting big on the beavs. Line started at 7 now down to 4.5.
#TPB (those poor bettors!)
If they take care of the ball like they’ve been doing I think they pull out the win. 38-31 Beavs!
Announcer said qb is very mobile. The Beavers kiss of death.
I’m sticking with my prediction. Offense and defense put it together and “special” teams gives up the loss.
At the very least kick every ball out the back of the end zone.
If Cal’s quarterback wasn’t hot garbage they’d be up three scores on hole.
no huddle to start, good sign. SMith’s paying attention
Togiai impact player. Lmao
Anyone got a link?
OMG; Beavs connect on the fade route
Hodgins TD!
Not a scoreless half! Wooooo!
There’s another half.
Debbie Downer :p
Choukair might actually be better than the Ducks kicker
I loved Maldonado
Lol Chip going for it
Chip fired after the game?
I can’t be the only one who loved that Pierce ran over a teammate for that first down. Get outta the way!
Beaver eat beaver world!
Was that Champ who AP ran over?
Yeah it was Champ, he was supposed be blocking and got driven right back in to the play because, oh I don’t know, he weighs 140 fucking pounds.
I love champ, however all the heart in the world does not change physics.
Beavs quota of fade routes has been met
should onside here
I think I might faint
should onside here. that’s what Dennis would do
called it!
Lol! That’s amazing
wannabeav wins the thread!
Chip moved to #1 on the hot seat.
Hey let’s not turn into Wazzu!
Too early.. WSU blew an easy win… we are a one half team
DAVID MORRIS !!!!
EPIC
Holy fucking shit.
Why was Chip smiling like a lunatic after that stop?
Wonder if they told him he’s gone if he loses this game because it makes no sense to go for it at your 30.
loved that smirk on Smith’s face
Probably the first time in 18 years that I can genuinely say the Beavers looked awesome. That was Dennis Erickson levels of swagger right there!
wise guys in Vegas knew something was up
Makes me wonder if chip fired rumors are flying because there was a lot of late action.
I’m going to declare that the most un-Riley quarter of football I’ve ever seen.
Boot on the neck.
What the hell am I watching? This is unfamiliar.
Is this what other teams felt like when they played us last year?
Tons of game left….gotta finish this motherfucker!!!
Perfect under-throw by Luton! Beautiful!
Just turned on the game. Holy shit what is going on?Go Beavs!!!
Pinch yourself
Eat a dick Chip!
I dont want to just win. I want retribution!
Run on 3rd and 11?
Way to change momentum
Dennis would have thrown a bomb there
Kipper commits so many penalties.
arm tackle by number 10
10 sucks so bad.
Here it goes! How to lose a game up 21… we know how to do it down 28, complete the cycle
shut your mouth!
Running on 3rd and 11 doesn’t help.
Smith error #1
Didn’t understand that either but that’s not on Smith thats on Lindgren… at least throw a screen or something that has a chance
McCartan looks decent….the man can tackle!
McCartan is one of those naturals like Morris. Doesn’t look like anything special but he just has it.
the “it” factor
Looks special to me. Idk what ur seeing. True sophomore.
Looks like a skinny white boy and probably had offers from Boise State and SDSU and shit.
long way to go, regrettably. Connecting on a bomb to go up 28-0 might have finished it. The game begins now. Chip going up-tempo
they should load the box on this guy. he’s no Mariota
And now back to your regularly scheduled beavers
Running on 3rd and 11 a momentum changer.
We’ll see if it was a game changer.
Yep, we had them on the ropes… but who wanted a blow out? Being a beaver fan shouldn’t be anxiety free, it never is
stabilizing drive there. gave the UCLA D a breather too. pivotal possession. Chip might onside here
Really no review at all?
should have been reviewed. probably would have stood but should have been reviewed
I don’t think he had a foot in bounds.
He had two
Nonetheless we don’t even get a review. Kind of like pierce’s long run that could have been a td. It was one foot.
run the damn ball. don’t put the game in LUton’s hands
go for it
Smith paying attention # 2. no Choukair
is that Hodgins first catch?
More like his 4th
Was thinking the same thing. Last year he was a bit clueless as expected for a frosh. This year looks much more comfortable and fluid.
Easily a touchdown
And now we have a review on a scoring play. Am I just paranoid?
In this case it wasn’t as clear… UCLA’s TD catch was pretty clear imo
Still warranted a review. What happened to every scoring ppl lay?
So hold up the game for every scoring play? This did not warrant a review, it’s about as easy as it gets
FFS choker
and there’s the Choukair we have come to know
Our luck we will lose by 1 point on a last second touchdown
He has one job.
Hopefully this is Hyde on Offense in the 1st half….Jekyll crank it up a notch in the 2nd.
Our back up kickers are garbage but perhaps they can make extra points at least… or just go for two every time, we may end up with more points in the long run
put a couple of spies on this guy. make him beat you with his arm
Turn over baby!!
What game are you watching?
Need a cream-filled turnover.
# 10 with the (lack of) coverage. who is that guy?
Tago sighting!
If Dennis was coaching UCLA he’d fake it
No letting up. Need to get TD or FG before the half.
Exactly, with three timeouts, not time to be conservative
May be the last score of the game for the Beavs….gotta be a TD.
FG? Hahahahahahahahahag! I wish
Why do I feel a turnover coming
the normal logic model here is to run a two minute drill to stay in the track meet. The one thing OSU can’t afford here is a pick. I say run the ball or run a draw or screen
Statue of Liberty.
Might as well since we have a statue
Was that guy not offsides? If not he needs to mix up the snap count.
Looked that way
Lutons fault for sure.. he should of blocked the guy
Coaching error. No reason to not burn clock after the first down was a loss. Way too much time left on the clock for UCLA.
As always, what happens at the end of the first half has potentially a big impact on the game.
slow witted response to the three yard loss. at that point force UCLA to burn some timeouts
Yep.
#2
don’t let them get long
anyone remember the end of the first half vs. SC a few years ago?
Let them catch it and hold them up til clock expires
Three terrible play calls in that last series. That sucks almost as much as that loser
Choukair missing the extra point. Again, as has happened so many times, the choker Choukair takes the wind out of our sails.
Beavs recovered from the bungled possession. The damn thing about missed kicks is that the setback is more than the loss of a single point; the psychological impact is equally damaging
Pass rush, playing faster, wrapping up. It looks like a defense
Just got home. What station is the game streaming on?
PAC 12 network
Thx
UCLA shouldn’t have had that last possession. Total Yards for UCLA getting close to OSU’s. Not a great indicator but it shows UCLA is moving the ball. Big first possession for Beav defense to start 2nd half.
First possession of second half is BIG for BOTH sides.
so, if the Beavs can play a decent to good second half they can win this
That’s the idea!
Chip is sandbagging Smith
Where’s Baylor and the chainsaw “thrust” when you need him?
Where’s BJ Baylor and the chainsaw thrust when you need him?
snapped at :33 on the clock
not going to overturn that
Beavs rattled
This Burton kid looking like a NFL first rounder…..WTF!
Whittley Whiff, contact at the 5 and then……bupkus
should switch to # 10
that looks like a TD
This feels familiar.
2nd half fade and find ways to lose.
Focus d on Felton he’s the only one doing anything.
Luton with the pressure turned up.
Let’s see how he does
There’s your answer.
so let me say this at the present juncture in the game.
Agree….establish the run FIRST!
Now we’ll see what offensive adjustments the Beavs made at halftime. Clock management will tell the tale this half.
Luton rushed that throw. Tight
How did he miss that pass? He had one job!
Easy toss and catch, if ya can toss with accuracy and touch.
Nice throw, Luton
Cue the bad news bears them music.
Nice throw on 3rd down
Does the AB site no longer have the “subscribe” option?
For now.
Need to iron out some things.
And that’s why sound and consistent mechanics/accuracy are more important than padded stats. Those kind of awful throws on routine plays are absolute killers and he’s done that his whole career.
well put
so UCLA converts on 3rd and 12 but OSU can’t convert 3rd and 2
Critical game now. Lose this after being up 21-0 and who knows where the team goes
this team has been destined to a 1-11 record from the beginng.
that will be overturned
They will lose this game and it just may be the comical 28-27 score to account for the missed PAT
Gave the D a break though
2 Fourth down stops against Chip. Thats so nice….
Luton with a chance to redeem himself. A TD drive here would put some pressure on the UCLA qb. Hopefully, Smith and Lindgren noted how tight Luton was on that last throw Run the ball
Run the fucking ball until UCLA stops it!!!!
Great play call
We should have ran it there.
tight end package signaled the run. good play call
Great play call!
Good ball by Luton after another terrible one. Beggars can’t be choosers I guess.
Scored in both halves! Yaaaaaaay!
Luton 4 heisman
Luton seems more effective under center
echo
Lindsey is a good one.
Who was that guy who said the transfers didn’t pan out?
Probably our best players along with hamilcar, RBs, Hodgins.
Scott Frost.
I feel like that td was a huge boost for the beavs
I do have to say Oregon State is willing to take chances, The Riley teams would always run in that situation
Go figure.. OSU doesn’t like momentum apparently
#10, Keith Pankey.
Hicks Onu.
Although it looked like Dunn was being held on the play and he would have been in place to make a play
I miss the Pankeys!
you fucking serious. one play td
Felton is all they got. Key on him!
#10 yoko ono or what ever his name is terrible, he looks scared and cant tackle
Omar HIcks ONU third really bad play of the game
that replay showing two beavs flailing into the ground after one gets pushed in the face is just a summary of being a beaver fan
Or Phil Knight after he gets rejected by his mistress!
since they’re doing everything predictable and terrible, is this where luton is overconfident and his first pick comes to give them even more momentum back?
5 passes in a row and finally an AP rush…….time
Togia shook that guy off like a bear
If that dude gets over his contact aversion he gets dannngggerousss
Dude’s fuckin strong.
I enjoy that we are conditioned to assume we will lose when we are up 10. #BennyLife
Well that was pure shit.
Pysche, beavs with a 4th down conversion and third td for Hodgins.
The run attempts were still hot garbage.
Won’t argue that. I think UCLA blocked more Bruins than we did.
Jake!!!! Finally answering the call when the game is in the balance!!!!
Hodgins wont be here next year, he’s too good
I said that 2 quarters into OK State. Guys got a lady to take care of and with his highlight real hes looking at atleast a 3rd round contract. Thanks for the TD’s brotha.
Gebbia would have 6 TDs versus this secondary.
So would Hekker but whos counting.
We should have ran it there again. I’m getting tired of watching Luton throw TD passes.
I’m a little worried about JJ at this point. He’s looking really off.
He should not be playing you can tell he is still hurt.
Well we’ve got a buncha games against non-JV defensive backfields coming up so careful what you wish for.
Classic Luton, couple uncatchable earhole rockets and then a dime to Hodgins. Props to Togiai though. I’ll take it if we can find a way to get a stop.
I know I’m belaboring this point, but notice how much vigor the defense seems to play with when the offense is productive. (notwithstanding the 75 TD run)
Beavs were fortunate they didnt review the hodgins sideline catch. His toe was out but for some reason they let it go.
Gonna go with the props to Smith on that one. Offense got the ball off pretty quick with a safe play that they knew well.
He got the other foot in. They should 1 replay and he drug the other foot. Guy is amazing.
2nd foot dragged in bounds but it hit after his 1st foot was already out.
But yes, credit to smith for running a play quickly there
Noticed that too. Toes landed right on the line, you could see the white grass of the stripe tear into the air.
I have no idea if Luton is the right QB, but one thing I know for sure is that Hodgins is a great receiver. Unfreaking believable that he is able to pile up these numbers when everyone knows he is getting the ball.
Team starting to show their identity…
Let’s see if they can finish
If Beavs had a better record, Hodgins would be sniffing Biketnikoff. Dude is unreal…
Hes still in the running!
Beavers had a Biletnikoff and a Groza award winner on a 5-6 team. Only Smilin’ Mike could have the best receiver and kicker in the nation and finish with a losing record!
Refs are just mailing in their calls. That wasn’t a first down run for UCLA and they didnt even question it
I know I saw that play his knee looked like it was a half-yard short and they just called first down like it was nothing.
Elu playing a shitload of snaps in this one.
Why do our db play 10 yds off on 3rd and 3
Irate answer: Terrible coaching or they dumb or something.
Real Answer: One needs to play back or you are wide open to one of those 3 and 3 play action tds.
announcer said Elu has over 20 tackles this year. 9 all last year.
bad call
Crap call by the refs. Same thing happened to Luton and they did not throw the flag
Does it not matter it was tipped?
Right, i thought with a tipped ball, everybody on the field was fair game to get hit while the ball was still in the air?
I thought they would at least mention it and maybe explain that it didn’t matter because of “so and so rule”.
Shit call
and the mobile qb on the read option walks in
Who is spying that guy????
that missed extra point is beginning to loom a bit
Extra point factoring in here….FAWK!!!
Run Pierce 3 times here.
Jefferson is not right.
Yep
Wide receiver sweep…?
Cap’n obvious………….but not to the coaching staff?
Kathy Bates could QB scramble for a first down against the Beavs.
Tom Petty’s corpse could get 3 yards…
Really need to score again so the d can rest and chew up a little clock
Any snap by Beavs with more than 5 sec on clock is a coaching error.
Yep
You trust Luton to make a decision in less than the last 5 seconds? Porbably a good move to have him take it on 6.
lol
Wilson is ranting on the radio about how OSU is not using the full 40
That guy embodies the beaver fan base spirit.
That’s BIG JIM to you!
Wow what is this.
Snap with 35 seconds and they throw.
Errors piling up again
They get away with it.
Now run and milk
Hodgins is out of his dam mind
there should be like 45 seconds less on that clock right now
Terrible play calling and clock management…but it’s working
Luton ran out of bounds instead of dropping to the turf. I don’t think 9er was happy with that
Clock runs either way.
Hamelcar absent this game — haven’t seen his name called out very often.
Serious?
He’s had a sack in garbage time….haven’t heard his name since the first quarter.
Per post game write-up — “Linebacker Avery Roberts was a menace in UCLA’s backfield, making three tackles for loss and finishing with eight total tackles.”
He was a big presence in the first half, they have been scrambling away from him since.
AP for 4-5 yards every first down sure is nice.
what a great comeback year Pierce is having
four down territory if they don’t convert on 3rd.
Haha announcers talking about two teams run into the ground by Simple Jack. How hard it is to rebuild after he shits up a program.
Nice win.
Wonder if Chip gets canned tomorrow.
Wtf!!!!! Luton with wheeeelllllllssss
They came back from way down vs WSU so the potential is real.
Luton wins it with his legs. who’d have thunk that would happen
Gary Anderson?
How ’bout that Togiai blocken’ for “nimble” Luton!
Noah had a much more physical game. Falling forward, shaking guys off and blocking well.
f***** Luton 4 heisman!!!
One thing sure, the uck guy is out of the running!!
And the keep up their annual tradition of getting a coach fired
Luton offensive player of the week. Should be Hodgins tho
Is this Chipster’s first loss to Da Beavs?
Not sure, but watching him choke on the L was especially satisfying
yes
Chipster lost to the Beavs in 2007 as an OC
7 minute drive to seal it.
Probably not enough talent on D to win more than another game or two, but I see progress.
We could easily be 4-1 with better coaching.
More wins are possible.
Ducks looked like ass tonight, too
Happy for Jonathan.
This is turning the corner. This is a signature win.
Like Marty Mauer rumbling on 4th down. Any win at the rose bowl is a huge fucking deal.
We are not #12 in the pac 12
Damn it it’s been a long time
Easy there, it’s a good win, but UCLA is Pretty bad and played terrible.
Chip gave us one possession and Jonathan stole another by channeling Dennis
As pointed out in the last thread, Bruins came in as the 129th of 130 teams in passing D.
Sure, but usually WE’RE really bad and play terrible. I like tonight WAY better!
Ah well, atleast we lead the nation in other stats. Fantasy sleepers!
With that play, the Beavs surpassed UCLA for total yardage. LOL
Ball game.
Luton had a great game. Hodgins awesome as usual, and nice running game too. Two halves of football!
Defense still bad.
Pretty funny coming from Anderpants because I can’t remember a single game he scored 40!
He said he was going to teach them how to use their arms, legs, and mind….LOL
He scored with 40 cheerleaders.
Somehow Anderpant’s offense scored 40 plus against Cal, Arizona, and Oregon. Two of them were wins.
Okay, I remember Cal now. Don’t remember him scoring 40 on the quacks
McM lead the Beavs to 42 points in that 52-42 to loss to the Quacks, still didn’t get him the starting the job the following year.
Smith probably drops into the 40s on the hot seat chart.
Chip moves to #1
Gotta put Luton in the Heisman conversation too.
Backup qb with one of the youngest rosters in the nation I doubt it. He has leeway I think.
Beavs are gonna get another opposing head coach fired
Reminder UCLA beat wazzu
Holy shit! A complete game and they win. The rest of the conference better watch out, we’re on a one game winning streak!
….and an average kicker from being 4-1!
Onu-HIcks is not good, I don’t know if the freshman year David Morris is ever coming back, but there has to be someone better on the bench. It’s a scary thought that there might not be.
Yup he’s not good at anything football related
Morris recovered the pooch kick, furd beating uw
If he can play special teams, why can’t he play safety? They need him!
He has been listed as #2 at safety lately, got some time there last week, I believe.
Stanford beating Washington late 20-10…..
I watched onu whiff on some tackles tonight. I thought players overall were in better position.
Jalen Moore did not play again. I’m assuming when he’s healthy Hicks gets fewer snaps? I think Hicks was benched for a while in the second half. He’s a bad tackler, he’s soft in coverage.
yep. I didn’t see him on the field after he missed in the backfield and UCLA went to house on one play
The defense is probably not good enough to beat the highest caliber Pac 12 opponent no matter how effective Luton is
What would have you said if f I would have told you that Luton would score 6 TDs and have a 224.8 passer rating after tonight?
We should have ran it more and put Gibbia in.
Disagree, but damn that was funny :)
It was indeed…a little tongue in cheek there
I don’t really get the Luton hate. He’s not perfect but he doesn’t turn the ball over, gets TDS and packs in yards. I’m glad people are excited for Gebbia but I doubt he’s actually our best chance to win this season.
it’s not hate; it’s practical criticism.
I’m happy when OSU players prove their critics wrong, even if it’s me. So, let’s see him do it a second time.
I’m just happy we finally won a game. Jemar and Pierce carried not only the ball, but this team. Luton looked good, too.
I do hope this game is the final time we see Choukair ever try an extra point or field goal though. Dude just doesn’t have what it takes.
At this point it had to be some inside joke that none of us get. He shouldn’t be allowed on the field. Period.
Jermar didn’t do anything.
This game should have been a blow out. The playcalling was not very good; very little diversity when it comes to run plays or screens.
I still have not seen a true halfback screen (not a tunnel screen) or a toss sweep. We have big receivers that can block.
disagree. putting in three tight ends, with Luton under center, signaled a run, but Luton found our guy all alone in the defensive backfield. play of the game. brilliant call.
Gotta give coaches credit; 5 penalties for 33 yds and no TO’s. Players make Plays?……and Coaches influence greatly how those players operate.
Still hate the poor clock management.
3 errors instead of 6 last week.
I guess they’re progressing….
^^^^^^^This and special teams with a nice recovery to contribute for once….gotta love that call to get the ball back up by 2 TDs.
D was on the field 35 minutes tonight. Couldn’t have held up for that long last year.
concur. no hands on hips.
Seems like way more sacks this year, too.
A road win is a road win….good night all.
Yeah, anyone complaining about this win is annoying.
Utah has to be the 2nd worst PAC fanbase after Oregon.
Totally delusional. We need to stick it to them.
Utah fans have hilarious expectations lol
Utah will forever be hamstrung by their complete inability to evaluate QBs. Has Utah ever had a legit Pac12 quality quarterback? Not that I can remember at least. Seems they always have that guy that tees off on shitty Banker defenses but shits his pants on the big stage.
Utah is where GA learned is QB discernment skills
A good response after last week’s close loss. Shows the team has not given up. Have quite an offensive identity now. Defense is improving incrementally.
Good play calls helped by weird decision by Kelly to go for it early. Not to say the Beavs wouldn’t have capitalized but it certainly accelerated the process. What a call with the inside/squib/drop kick. Can’t do it again for a while but it worked!
Utah will be tough if they have their rb. If not, it’ll be a good fight.
I’ve never seen that kind of kick before. The officials were huddled up afterwards too. Sure as hell worked.
I think they did it last year also, but it was more of an onside kick. Am I remembering that correctly?
Has anyone seen a video highlight posted of that kickoff? I’d like to see it again.
Moore was banged up, turd going to win with their 3rd string qb
I see you have new fallacy cards, Angry, haha.
https://twitter.com/angrybeavs/status/1180719302455902209?s=19
I don’t expect anyone to see everyone jumping on the bandwagon. But the truth of the situation is that the Beavers ARE still in charge of their own destiny in the Pac12 Championship. They’re in the drivers seat!!!
Wouldn’t Stanford be ahead of us if we both won out?
No. Stanford has two losses. Beavs only have the 1.
Oh right, forgot they played Oregon too
Thanks to all.
EDIT: I guess the above means I’m easily amused or need to get out more.
That was basically my train of thought for this game.
PS get out of my head
OK, will do :-)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcfnQ4hjopE postgame presser
12% chance we win 6 or more games this season
https://mobile.twitter.com/ESPN_BillC/status/1180850508103327744
Day after random thoughts
Yes I agree. He blew a play up on the goal line but missed the tackle. He also flat backed a guy to rush the passer but qb took off for a first.
Riley only had ONE ten win season, when they had the extra game in Hawaii
Maybe not well-stated, but that was my point. They played Idaho and Eastern Washington which helped them get to the Sun Bowl and 10 wins. They were strategic about it. There have been two seasons since that I’m aware of where they passed on playing 13 games.
Gotta pay for a team to come play. Ad doesn’t have the money right now.
OK, will do :-)
Edit: Ignore
Both rodents have impressive wins! Too bad the Powerball is only 80 million, as obviously this means I am destined to win. 500 mill and Parker would be calling games from Angrybeavs Pressbox at Beavergopher Stadium.
Is there any video of the drop kick by Rodriguez?
I keep reading it was a beauty, but somehow there aren’t any video highlights of it
https://twitter.com/geoffschwartz/status/1180869501664944128?s=19
Wish it was the game feed and not the replay
The Beavs should be in the Civil War.
I’ve seen the Ducks a few times now and they look like shit each time. Definitely not the same Ducks. Mario is a bad coach, too. I’d argue the Beavs have a better offense this year. So we’ll see if the D keeps progressing toward a bend-but-don’t-break style.
The only direct comparison we have is Stanford. We scored 28 on them and the ducks scored 21. Ofc Washington wasted Hawaii and then lost to Stanford so likely not a good comparison haha
Scanning OLive, Canzano said Beavs could easily be 4-1, have best offense in Pac 12
If Aydon, Hodgins and Whittley can get into Oregon’s backfield the Beavs have a fighting chance in this year’s Civil War.
Losing Gumbs for the season sucks.
The Ducks while horribly coached on “O are the best Defense in the pack. How do you get these flat ducks are horrible.
I saw them actually playing to win throughout UCLA. They had been so close twice and they are finally breaking through those mental hurdles. Looking forward to seeing them surprise some people down the road.
I tihnk this year we will get a most improved trophy and next year Smith is Pac 12 COTY
It was a good win vs a BAD team.
Posted to wrong comment. Ignore
From a UCLA board:
“The house cleaning must start now. It’s too likely late to bring in a new coach, so someone already on-staff will probably be promoted. But not one of them merits that. Believe it or not, Mike Riley might be a suitable interim hire, as he has DC and HC experience and knows the PAC12.”
HUHHHHH?
lol
Firing Kelly and hiring Riley as his replacement would be about the craziest turn of events imaginable in the AngryBeav micro-universe
Those poor bastards.
It would be the ultimate #tbp move.
Those Poor Bruins
Fans have no patience. I talked to a high school football coach last week. Young guy, only 35. Has already accomplish complete turn arounds at two different schools. He told me if he doesn’t have this current program winning on the 3 rd year they will be calling for his head.
