Let’s just do a general thread for game week. Everyone is probably mentally shot after that last game.
I think the focus has to shift from this year to next year. Smith has to find the courage to make a QB change, make a kicker change, etc. He can’t keep doing the same things. I mean, he can, but to what point? We’re no going to a bowl game. Might as well start getting better for next year and getting guys experience now so they’re ready to go right out of the gate.
Something tells me he won’t do that, though…
Not sure it’s worth drafting up predictions or possible outcomes given our HC doesn’t even get the proper players on the field. At this point you have to assume every game will be a loss, and if it’s not then cool. The only reason I’ll watch is to see if Smith learns anything from his mistakes.
There absolutely needs to be a change at kicker.
At the very least, Gebbia should be brought in for 2nd, 3rd, or 4th and short, or redzone situations. He’s more versatile than Luton when it comes to running the football, and I don’t think OSU runs read options or RPO’s enough. I think Luton is a good quarterback between the 20’s, though there are glaring shortcomings.
Why change at kicker?.. he didnt lose game.. his 50 yd FG was on target but just short and the other FG was blocked because no one blocked the stanford player and kick got blocked… osu had penalty on leaping during Stanford FG that extended drive.. gave up long KO return on Stanfords last drive.. this WAS NOT the kickers fault we lost the game.. Luton gave up sack in FG territory late in 1st half.. OSU Defense couldnt get off field on 3rd down in first 3 qtrs
Choker’s career OSU numbers. 50 FG attempts, 29 makes, 21 misses.
That’s enough information for many of us that a change should be made.
He has the worst percentage for a Beav kicker since the 70’s.
Yeah, he’s terrible and there’s really no valid argument at this point.
Actually, he did kind lose the game. Look at the replay of the final kickoff to Stanford. Right in the middle of the field, giving the returner maximum return leverage. I had actually expected a variation on this theme, which is a kick out of bounds giving Stanford the ball on their own 40. The poor kid is so psyched out by the game that I’m sure he was telling himself, just groove this one and hope for the best.
Lastly, I’ll only ask this: if the situation were reversed, and OSU was kicking for the win with six seconds left, do you honestly expect Choukair to make it? I wouldn’t, even if he was inside the 10 yard line.
He doesn’t make kicks. See Hawaii game. See XP at the end of regulation in the CU game last year.
Has he EVER made a game winning kick for OSU? Dude fucking sucks and the article I read stated at his current FG% he’d go down as the 2nd worst kicker in OSU history.
For the life of me I fail to understand why a change isn’t made. How many chances are they gonna give him???? How many has he already failed at????
Hes got something on Smith. Maybe photos of him sleeping in Husky pajamas.
Only second worst? Who was the worst? Charlie Brown with Lucy as the holder?
No surprisingly Charlie is 3rd worst.
Here’s a thought…maybe the next guy is actually worse. Chew on that one awhile.
I would suspect Jack Colletto, the linebacker, has more snaps this season than Tristan Gebbia. Who would have predicted that?
Also, since we’re playing UCLA this week, it seems appropriate to bring up the new bill that was signed by California’s Gavin Newson today.
California will now allow student/athletes to profit from their own likeness starting in 2023.
This will change the NCAA as we know it. As much as I support student athletes being allowed to make a buck off a t-shirt with their name on it, how do you police boosters making thousand dollar purchases of those same shirts? You can’t. So every marketable recruit will want to play for a California school. Seems like the NCAA will be forced to adopt this practice nationwide, pay for play will essentially be legalized, but with no transparency. (Probably still pretty similar to today’s model, except the student wont be held accountable for boosters cheating the rules)

End of the sport.
That sucks. Beaver football was filling my Fall Saturdays with unbridled glee :-|
Was just thinking about those poor oregon fans. Just when they’ll be able to legally buy a national championship, their benefactor will die of old age.
I actually like PK’s personality other than the paying for players and slave labor thing.
He’s engaging and interesting otherwise.
Aside from lopping off a couple of heads, that OJ guy is pretty engaging and affable.
Random thoughts: 1) Clownzano article really causes one to think should I be a Beaver believer? 2) I’ve always felt Anderpants left because his personal cheerleader life was a mess… and it looked like that is why he left Wisky for OSU. But I’m believing his personal life is always a mess and Clownzano might have it right for once. 3) I like Smith and he inherited a total dumpster fire. “I’m giving him 3 years” is what I said when he came on-board. 4) Not sure if the anemic program can ever recruit in it’s current state. Wins wins recruits. 5) I wonder if Smith is saving horses for next year (Gebbia). 6) UCLA is waking up under Chip and OSU will get beat in the Rose Bowl. 7) At this point I’m glad I cut the cord and lost the Pac-12 Network 8) Hockey is starting and now I can just move on!
First reaction to number 5 point is watching Speights play and play very well this weekend was a bright spot. I don’t see why he would “save” Gebbia or any of the kickers. I really don’t get some of those coaching moves. He has had no problem playing guys especially with the four game rule for red shirting. Why is he so stubborn. He brings in Colletto on 3rd down to have the run/pass threat. He could have that threat every play if Gebbia was in.
He’s not saving the kickers. Choker beat them out in fall competition because he’s a good practice kicker.
but he’s no good from outside the 10 yard line. As Angry said in the last thread, that being the case just go for it on third down. I mean, even if they made first down 1 out of every three times it’s better than going 0-8 in FG attempts.
Thanks for the beer^^^
What’s funny is you think a rebuild happens in two years… look at Leach, WSU wasn’t shit until the 4th year… it takes time, some don’t have the patience for.. we haven’t regressed this year, this a much better football team than last year, by a long shot… that’s what folks need to be looking at, but instead ya’ll sounding like a bunch of duck fans… no natty fire the coach
^^^^^^^ yep. It’s going to take some time to get better.
agreed
I haven’t seen any one here talk about firing Smith. Disappointed a more experienced coach (Miles, Wilcox, etc.) didn’t get the job? yes. Smith talks a lot about learning how to win but he needs to do some self-reflection along those lines. The hardest thing for a coach to learn is how to make difficult personnel decisions; that is, bench this guy so the other guy can play. Smith hasn’t learned how to do that yet. Notwithstanding that fact, the team is indeed better than last year’s squad, though it’s even money on whether they will meet let alone exceed last years’ win total.
I’d like to see Gebbia get some snaps too but shit man Luton has 9 TDs with no picks. I don’t get all the bitching, sure he’s missed some throws but he’s doing pretty damn good, better than I expected. The only pick we’ve thrown this year was by Gebbia by the way. Time to stop hoping for Luton to get benched, it ain’t happening.
He’s inconsistent. He cant’ play more than 1/2 of a game at a competent level. He leaves points on the table every game. The defense has played well enough to win two games, and I would argue that if Luton hadn’t disappeared in the second quarter of the Oklahoma State game that would have ended up being a lot more competitive game than the final score indicated.
and yes, his benching ain’t happening but the question to ask is why not
Luton’s a decent QB. His numbers so far show he’s in the middle of the pack compared to the rest of the country. I think the strongest argument in favor of benching him is to get Gebbia experience to help for next year.
We have a top 20 offense. Defensive talent is by far the bigger issue. It’s insane that we can be averaging almost 500 yards of offense per game and still not have a win against an FBS team.
If you can hold two FBS opponents to 31 points in an age of high powered offenses, I would argue that it’s the lack of OFFENSIVE competence that’s costing OSU not its defense. And, let me add, total yards is a misleading stat because it doesn’t factor failure in the red zone. Or put another way, Luton did NOT play better than the Stanford Q B even if he had 150 more yards passing.
31 points is roughly average for a college offense. Stanford and OK State both scored season-high point totals against us.
Total yards takes into account starting field position, which has been hurt by both our defense and special teams. Our RZ% is fine.
Our offense is ranked 22 in YPG and 42 in PPG
Our defense is ranked 99 in YPG and 94 in PPG
Which is the problem unit here?
Neither, it’s been the not so special teams. A lot of people said if we went from God awful to bad on D, we’d win some games. Didn’t account for SP letting us down.
At least we are all in agreement :)
Luton has a high reliance on Hodgins, and has been bailed out by Hodgins and Flemings on what should have been INTs…and gotten lucky on a few other errant throws.
I’m afraid that one of these times, Hodgins is going to get hurt adjusting for a poorly thrown Luton ball…exposed, defenseless, hit hard.
He has been lucky. One of these games he will be unlucky and throw 3 picks
“Not sure it’s worth drafting up predictions or possible outcomes…”
UCLA’s freshman dual threat QB has a field day against the Beavers, Chip thinks to himself “Feels like old times beating the Beavers…” Smith has too much Luton/Choker… the Beavers lose.
Invest your time wisely this coming Saturday, go out and do something active and enjoy yourselves.
My interest in this season was staked on last weekend’s game. I’m not paying for P12N just to watch this team.
Gotta go with the free Fubo TV trial for the week. Still don’t blame you for not watching.
I used the free trial on the Stanford game!
I’m a loser with no life so I’ll be watching
Here’s my two day old hot takes from the game.
Luton relies heavily on Hodgins. But it kind of works. He did miss some easy check downs and went for lower percentage throws but completed them. Those sacks at the end of the first half were killer.
O line is inconsistent. At times opens up huge holes and gives great pass pro. Other times just get beat badly.
Choukair blocked kick was low but also blame the line for the block.
Whittley made a real nice play at the end of the game. That was his only stat. When Stanford was already well within fg range.
The two sacks were nice. Esp the one up the middle, nice call.
The defense is so close but yet so far away.
Pierce is a madman. Def going to be in an NFL camp next year.
I thought the defense were in position to make plays and did play better. You could tell they were playing smarter. But they lack the talent to make the critical plays. Should have picked the throwback to the QB. Db had it read right, but he fell over. That was the same drive the defense held but then got called for leverage and then another penalty the next play. Stanford got a few plays to go their way in the first half.
The fumble on the kickoff, it was too hard to tell. Needed a camera angle from the Beavs sideline. Replay wouldn’t have overturned it had it gone the Beavs way.
Pretty much repeating my thoughts from last game. Luton holds the offense back but hasn’t done anything really dumb so he won’t get pulled. Gebbia could move the offense to new heights. He’d make some more risky throws but also spread the ball around more and be able to escape pressure when needed.
Defense again just lacks talent. I don’t see anything wrong with the scheme. Players just aren’t making the plays.
We’ll see how the team reacts to this loss. Is it a stepping stone or did it knock them down? I see a close game at UCLA. Not sure if they have it in them to win the game yet.
Imagine if Whitley had reached out to punch the ball loose on that 1 play he made? The only thing that could have saved us at that point was a turnover or missed field goal.
Thought the same thing.
Actually, one thing I noticed throughout the game is that our tacklers were attacking the ball every opportunity they got, with one of their hands going to the ball and the other used as the “main wrap”. I think this is different from past years.
You’d think it would have yielded results by now, but alas…
A couple of thoughts…
After watching Luton for 3 years now. I can almost tell by looking at his body language, if he is going to have a productive series or not. He gets this look on his face like he is totally lost on the field at times during the game and its usually a 3 and out or sputters before they can score. Statically he is an okay QB, but he doesn’t have the IT factor. It seems like you have to constantly light a fire under him. As the QB he should be rallying other players not the other way around.
Why aren’t we running the mid-tempo (faster) offense most of the time? Seems the offense does way better. When we run the slow tempo offense seems most of the time our offense sputters.
Last a question for you guys that know defense better than me. Would it be better if Tibesar is on the side line instead of in the box? Seems like with our lack of defensive skills, having the DC on the sideline working with the players and coaching them up during the game would be much better also great timing for teachable moments.
No, Tibesar/Lindgren need to be in the box in order to be effective at their jobs.
I think you may be misunderstanding the coordinators role when you mention him being on the sideline. That’s precisely what position coaches are for, as they work with the players directly on a daily basis. The coordinators, especially on game day, oversee and direct the offense/defense as a whole.
If “coaching up” in “teachable moments” is needed, it should come from the position coaches. It’s the kind of thing that they should be very good at, more so than coordinators that have a lot more on their plate.
I miss the Mark Banker hand jive while he was on the sidelines
Here you go. Just so you can relive the good old days. https://www.wikihow.com/Do-the-Hand-Jive
There are a couple clips floating around on Twitter that show how bad Noah Togai is at football.
He didn’t move a muscle when ‘blocking’ during the blocked field goal attempt. The defender ran right by him and Togai didn’t move. The other clip is him running as a lead blocker and it appears that he purposefully avoids throwing a block.
Coupled with the fact that he seems to have a lot of drops, he needs to be replaced.
couldn’t agree more with this comment, That missed block was horrible. The only excuse would be he thought the tackler didn’t have a angle on Lindsey, so he went down field to block. Awful…
Yeah, I remember the lead blocker, not blocking play. It was prominent on the TV angle. Of course, the numbnut P-12 broadcasters didn’t mention anything.
Probably cost a td.
one more guy, in addition to Choukair and Luton, that Smith can’t bring himself to bench. Oddly, Smith is the ONE guy in recent Oregon State history who should appreciate the value of benching a non-performer so another guy can get a chance–circa 1998.
It’s hard to make any argument for playing Choker unless you just want to give the other kicker full eligibility. Experience probably matters more for a young kicker, though, and it’s an opportunity for Smith to send a message. Easier to change a kicker than QB and send a message. Smith seems weak, stubborn, or both in that he won’t make changes required nor send a message. More evidence of this is his own players fighting with one another twice now. He didn’t send the message the first time so they did it again.
At the very least, give the other guy a shot at a field goal. Choukair has been fine kicking xp.
Read a lot of comments about the state of the program that GA took over vs the program he left Smith. GA was a train wreck, but the Smith inherited way more talent than GA from did from Riley. I’m half convinced that Riley left not because he didn’t want to fire his guys, but because of how bad the talent was going to be.
I think there was actually some talent left by MR, GA was too myopic and arrogant to assess properly. A certain QB did pretty well after he transferred. A WR made the starting line-up at Alabama. There were others.
The problem is Jake Luton hasn’t really done anything to warrant sitting him. The fact that at this point he is not turning the ball over at all is a big deal. Yes, he is inconsistent at times, but at other times he is brilliant. Case and point, I don’t think he is losing the game for us. To me the most glaring issue is stupid decisions/mistakes/penalties. Which I think Smith will correct over time. He knows the detailing it takes to be an elite football team. Plain and simple. I also think you have to pin some of the offensive woes on Lindgren. We were pushing Stanford back 3-4 yards on almost every run play it seemed. We should have ran it more and set up play action in the first half.
As for Choukair, kicking is pretty objective whether you are good or not and since he is still kicking, I’d imagine we don’t really have anything better behind him. That being said, I think some other kickers should get some game chances. Plus our offense is good enough, we should probably just go for anything outside the red zone. What do we have to lose?
All things being said, I see the improvement and I see it every game. There is still a lot of football to be played and if the Beavs just get a little more consistent, they will start winning football games more regularly. They have the horses now.
He might not have done anything to warrant sitting him, but circumstances warrant sitting him.
The season is over so make a change with the future, not the past, in mind.
There’s been improvement.
The offense is overall, likely to put up points in most games, which they struggled to do for a while.
There’s running back depth that arguably hasn’t been seen at OSU even during its more contemporary, successful seasons (Sun Bowl with Moore at QB, or the Alamo Bowl). I can’t recall a tandem like Jefferson and Pierce, with Baylor and Tyler behind them. The drop off after #1 was always pretty significant and the approach was one ball carrier getting a very high percentage of reps. There was never 4 RBs this capable.
The defense is getting TFLs this year compared to last.
But this team should realistically be 3-1; Hawaii and Stanford were there for the taking. There could be results, not just improvement.
I thought the secondary was awful. Even that last pass play, 18-yard easy pitch and catch to get down to the 32. That cushion in a critical situation was ridiculous. And the fucking around on the trick play? The TE just threw up a prayer like the QB was a jump ball expert! D-Line and LB’s look much improved. A team like the Quacks may not even bother running the ball, no reason to except for trying to show they are tough.
I will say Dunn looked decent, like he was starting to settle in a bit.
NYTimes on the California law allowing college athletes to receive compensation:
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/30/sports/college-athletes-paid-california.html
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/30/sports/should-college-athletes-be-paid.html
“In a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom in September, the N.C.A.A.’s Board of Governors said California schools might gain “an unfair recruiting advantage” because of the law, and they would eventually be barred from N.C.A.A. competition.
Colleges and universities could face substantial fines — “potentially in the millions of dollars,” according to a legislative analysis — for N.C.A.A. violations, and the financial losses would be even steeper if universities lose eligibility for their teams to compete.
It is not clear, though, whether the N.C.A.A. could legally enforce any fines. California officials have said they do not believe the N.C.A.A. could punish colleges or athletes for complying with a state law.”
Two things-
1: I mentioned it at the end of the last thread, but when will it be time to think redshirt on Jefferson? If he’s gonna be dinged up and ineffective all season and AP is on fire there’s no reason to burn a year for 3 carries vs Stanford.
2: Reading between the lines, Cristobal basically jettisoned a RS freshman receiver to make a spot for Williams. He’s currently “away from the team, dealing with personal issues”. AKA shopping around for a school to transfer to.
Redshirting Jefferson is a great idea. Pierce produces when given options, you give developmental options to Baylor, Tyler….next year, Gebbia with a healthy Jeffersion, Baylor and Tyler with valuable game experience.
Could use four games of Tar’on Madison as well if needed to fill in any depth if injuries occur.
Oh yeah that’s a good point.
Last time we traveled to UCLA, we got our asses handed to us and GA booted one of our players off the team(a receiver, I think)
After that terrible game, I posted a video of a dumpster on fire on the twitter feed and fans lost their shit at me, forcing Angry to delete it from the feed.
Funny thing is, I don’t think anybody can deny we were knee deep in a dumpster fire at that point in time and still haven’t really recovered much.
Good times
Yeah who was that got kicked off? It was a Riley kid I think.
Daytrin Guyton. Looks like he bounced from a Juco to Bowling Green after OSU and then got dismissed from Bowling Green last year.
Felony robbery charges, classy.
https://cdn2.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1819679/LEACH-F-U.gif
What happened there?
Haha fucking Leach.
Kinda looks like he’s lost most of his current team.
Well they’re fat, lazy, entitled and something else. Didnt he say one of his teams just wanted to hang out with their fat little girlfriends and that they couldn’t beat a womens softball team? Classic.
Luton getting sacked at end of half is reason enough to sit him not to mention scoreless halves against UH and Stanford. Regarding Choker, I don’t pin the 50 yard miss in driving rain on him. We should have went for it. Zero chance he was going to make that.
Those two sacks at the end of the half were on the line one guy came straight up the middle unblocked the other right off the edge untouched. They were in Luton’s face at the end of his drop and he was in the pocket and couldn’t throw it away.
He’s gotta know you can’t lose extra yardage there though. If the blocking is blown, get down on the turf and at least you get a field goal attempt. Instead, he runs backwards an extra 10 yards.
I know it’s easy for me to say when I dont have a linebacker running at me, but in that situation, you have to know above all that losing yards is the worst possible outcome outside of a turnover.
https://twitter.com/StanfordFball/status/1178106917421383680?s=19
Wow really? I wish I was a big man like you and would take that hit… show me a clip of any QB in ncaa or nfl that takes that sack lol… I will put money on it that you can’t find something within the last two years that doesn’t involve a person slipping… Luton isn’t the worst QB in the world, we’ve had way worse, recently even… a different QB wouldn’t change a thing sadly, we would had lost these games regardless
How much money?
Quick search of “unblocked sack” and click on the videos tab. Scanned through several videos and didn’t see a single QB turn around and run backwards. Some may have been knocked backwards, bit forward progress minimized the lost yards. But don’t take my word for it.
https://twitter.com/search?q=sack%20unblocked&s=09
Number one, the video shows a QB who had zero time to react… but it somehow proves your point lol? Different speed in the nfl… even if he tried to run backwards he was already on ground.. it would have looked similar regardless of the QB and that’s my point.. you had plenty of time with your comment and still missed the mark.. can’t imagine you as a QB
Video?
That query returned dozens of examples. Not just one.
You said you’d put money on it that i couldn’t find something from the last 2 years that doesn’t involve a person slipping.
I gave you more than 1 example, so pay up you cheap bastard. I’ll donate the proceeds to Angry’s site.
I think Chuck already donated.
But he’s defending Luton and the season is beyond that point. Whether you think Luton is better or not doesn’t matter anymore as we need to prepare for next year starting now.
and you think that Luton could logically conclude he had a chance to outrun a guy? There’s an obvious recourse: throw the damn ball away.
QB has to be thinking I can’t take a sack before snap. Good QB would also recognize defense to be able to anticipate what’s coming. Hard to understand why 6 year senior wouldn’t do better. Freshman or first year started maybe but not Luton.
Side note, my son used to play 7v7 for Taylor Barton who was Luton’s private QB coach in HS. When we signed Luton, I asked Taylor about him. Taylor was PC but basically said he lacked QB IQ. Physically gifted but something was missing. I think I understand what he was getting at now
So it looks like the ucla backup QB may be starting. Yay us.
Choker shouldn’t be playing, plain and simple. That problem lies squarely on the the coaches. A missed field goal is a turnover. So the coaches are essentially handing the ball over to the other team when they trot Choker out there. Our 4th down percentage is 57%. That’s better than Choker’s field goal percentage. So wtf is Smith thinking? Is he bad at the maths? Interesting fact: our opponents’ 4th down percentage is 100%. That’s fucking pathetic.
Smith is playing everything by the book and kicking when the books says kick, playing the veteran QB, etc. It’s safe and by the book. It’s working because people are blaming the players not Smith.
He needs to have some balls and make the more difficult but correct decisions. He’s afraid of the questions and criticism that would follow.
Is the book College Football Coaching for Dummies?
close! It’s Complete Idiot’s Guide to COACHING COLLEGE FOOTBALL: https://productplacementblog.com/movies/complete-idiots-guides-to-coaching-college-football-in-the-waterboy-1998/
Hahaha. Nice.
agree with Angry. We see Smith’s youth and relative immaturity with these personnel decisions
OTOH, Smith seemed to take the correct approach when asked about the Devon Williams fiasco when he said,
https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-special-teams-struggle-in-loss-to-cardinal/article_328b4f91-7256-527d-a751-9e06501f8428.html

I’m fully prepared to see the Beavs lose every remaining game on the schedule no matter who plays QB. But I’d rather get Gebbia some playing time now than break him in in game 1 next year.
I get where your coming from.. but I haven’t seen anything from him that is a game changer.. the way I look at it is, if you can’t help us win games why risk the injury? Doesn’t make sense when he’s supposed to lead us next year… you can talk about game experience, etc… true great players don’t need that, if he is one of the few, he won’t have a problem getting it done next year
Why wouldn’t you want Smith to make a change in the line up? Dosen’t matter what position, but what they have been doing the last 4 games isnt working. Why not change things up? Even riley did it once or twice, but smith seems to think nothing is wrong but a few discipline problems. And hes right, but hes just acknowledging the problems and not doing anything to fix them because they show up every week. Why not try the other QB with the first string? Why not put in the other kicker for a field goal? Seasons lost right? Whats it going to hurt, feelings?
Lol! Again your missing my point.. it’s the same reason the NFL teams don’t start a QB just because he has potential… the reason is, is that it wouldn’t change a thing… and we actually need to win games and we can win them… it helps with these things called recruiting… it’s not a video game.. just cause your good at Madden or on your couch don’t mean shit… sorry to bust your bubble
30 minutes or less Luton is going to win us a game? Lol, sure he is. Recruits notice that Smith wont make a change, if not luton then Choker. They also notice when Pierce ran 7 time for 100+ against Hawaii and then never saw the field again. It shows poor coaching decisions, so if hes wrong about Choker and wrong about letting our RBs loose then maybe hes wrong about Luton. And nfl teams start rookies with 0 nfl game experience every year.
@chuck, I’d advise you to cover up the names of the authors of these comments. Read them again. Uncover the names and then decide if you need to rethink your “theory’.
It’s not a theory, it’s an opinion… you can say what you want but the only time I’ve seen NFL rookies start is when there wasn’t a decent experienced QB on the roster… In this situation, it seems Gebbia is not head and shoulders above Luton… No reason to start him over him… I’d rather keep him healthy but that’s just me
there’s more nuance to this situation than either side of this debate is allowing. To give Gebbia a chance in a game doesn’t necessarily mean that Luton rides the pine for the rest of the year. Ironically, Smith messages the limited nature of Luton’s game whenever he sends Colletto in.
Good points.
Ahh the old beaver boil going on, missed that!
1) Choukair is not a good kicker but we really don’t know what the alternatives look like or are ready at all. Mike Fessler was our punter for 4 years and I personally witnessed him do some negative yard pumps at critical times. Sometimes there isn’t a good option yet. We have brought in a bunch of kickers so hopefully they are up to grade next year.
2) Luton has a live arm, nfl height and can finally move a bit. He is still struggling with development but to me the problem is he only trusts one guy. We rely heavily on Hodgins and have not really defined another regular target. If Champ gets the start next week I think you see Luton have a solid first half. People are pointing out dumb throws that work but I remember DA doing the same shit. He would throw through a tiny hole and hit a talented receiver that he trusted. If QBs only made safe throws then offense would still be I-Formation.
3) Noah has been disappointing in the smith era. He was never a great blocker but the guy straight up misses or avoids contact sometimes now. His once reliable and impressive hands seem to have suffered in his time off healing. I often see drops where it looks like he is worried about contact more than catching the ball. I miss Noah of freshman year but maybe the way he played got him hurt too much and he lost the mojo.
4) Seems like a longshot but Smith might just be trying to get Luton to the NFL. Even if hes on a practice squad thats a big recruiting tool for JC/Transfers. “Look at this guy who bounced around and got injured a lot. We got him to the NFL even with the low talent team and odds he had”. Wins matter more than a star in the NFL for recruiting but at least this is a more fun way to look at it.
5) How is no one talking about Parkinson! Dude has destroyed us basically by himself two years in a row. This year he even threw a turd to the backup qb as our corner and safety posed for fatheads in the endzone. I hope that guy goes to the NFL early so we don’t have to watch that painful shit again.
6) Woah Canzano did something that had numbers in it. I’m proud of our teams fiscal efficiency but damn maybe we could spend as much as WSU? Getting good TV money would be nice, oh well.
It will be alright Fam, at least when we lose in heartbreaking fashion there’s a real warm nostalgia in our souls…or maybe thats just the booze.
point #4 is right out of the Riley play book; I should say, late-Riley playbook; when he became more interested in getting some “skill position” guys in the NFL rather than a wholly competitive line-up
Nice avatar and username.
I was trying to find the sweet one I had from the old beaverfootball forum days but alas it is lost the sands of time. This one works for now haha.
I don’t follow the NFL much, but there’s no way Luton even sniffs the NFL, is there? His downfield accuracy and arm strength are both suspect.
I’m assuming NFL guys watch game film…
I don’t think he has a shot, but I mean Jamarcus Russell got drafted #1 overall, so there are people who fall in love with all the wrong things. Makes it possible. It would have to be a really bad franchise and probably just practice squad/undrafted free agent.
The Pats will have to replace Brady at some point. Weren’t people saying they saw some Brady in Luton when he came to us out of Juco?
I could see him get a camp invite to serve as a arm to toss to receivers and save the real QB’s arm from wear and tear. Mitch Leidner got one for Christ’s sake and he makes Jake look like Aaron Rodgers.
Exactly. Camp arm at most.
Ryan Katz was on the Broncos squad for awhile from what I recall. I think he may have made it t practice squad for a while.
Even Marcus McMaryion got a shot.. oh wait. Sorry Angry
^^^^^ Proves my theory that people root against Beavs just because they don’t like me and/or are threatened by the site.
Didn’t like him as a QB, and he transferred out… so not a Beav. Definitely not threatened by your site.
Well thanks for another wonderful contribution.
With his body type and arm strength I think he would get looks. Hes not there with decision making but its pretty hard to argue that he can’t put some zip on the ball or throw far enough. His accuracy isn’t bad and you can’t argue with his td/int ratio. His efficiency isn’t even that bad.
I notice when he tries to throw with touch we stall. When he throws it like hes trying to get a snake away from him the timing on the routes works much better and the defense doesn’t close on our receivers. I have also noticed that our receivers suck at catching a soft ball. Special Noah prefers a fireball in his chest to some touch, might be a case of hearing footsteps and forgeting to catch.
Either way he has the physical goods to be a practice squady in the nfl.
If Luton can throw a ball between the uprights from the fifty on his knees, he has definitely got a shot!
As a kicker?
What a shocker

Cincinnati has painted their field this week. Not sure if they switch it up for every home game? It’s definitely different, but I kindof like it.

I think the Beaver’s basketball court would look sweet if it were predominantly black.
OT: Anderpants team plays LSU this weekend. Totally LOTB if he would pull the upset.
Bonus points if they get their kicker a manageable GW field goal and he actually makes it.
He has Matt Wells’ players. Wait until he has to manage his own again.
Go to your room and put on your big boy pants young man.
Depth chart for the game. No changes. Looks like there are 2 other kickers we could try, too.

Yes, The Guardian is well known for their hot college football takes.
From a soy-boy named Oliver.
We have different QB packages for different situations, so we should also have different kicker packages. I suggest putting Choukair in when we’re leading or trailing the opponent by 40+. For other situations, anyone else.
Smith posted his “Dam right” commitment signal a few minutes ago.
Only uncommitted official visitor last weekend was Silas Bolden.
Not saying the 2 are related…..but….
And right when i hit send, Silas Bolden posted his commitment.
Victor Bolden’s younger brother for those who aren’t aware.
Pretty similar size/speed. Maybe even a little smaller than Vic was
https://twitter.com/silasbolden5/status/1179203149996941312?s=19
“Athlete” — was this our plan B to Williams?
I’m guessing not. Bolden’s had an offer for a while.
When Choke Air kicks, the signal is Damn…….wide right.
Interesting article in today’s (Tuesday’s) Wall Street Journal on how QB is the one position most often misjudged by college coaches. (perhaps someone tech savvy like Oneoldbeav or Beavergopher can link to it.) Anyway, the finding is right in Angry’s wheelhouse; to wit:
college coaches flub QB recruitment because they try to find phenoms in their early high school years and inevitably overlook other recruits who are “late bloomers.” A few examples of NFL caliber QB’s who had a paucity of college offers for this reason: Daniel Jones, Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen, Carson Wentz. What most commonly leads the recruiters astray? you guessed it–height. Coaches lock in on recruits with stature early, ignoring the guys who grow a few inches and put on weight as high school upper classmen.
As I reflected on this analysis it occurred to me that surely no football program this century has had a trio of statues like DA, Mannion, and Luton
I have some good articles on bias that I’d like to dig into and post at some point.
They’re relevant to football. All that said, Smith should not have height bias given his stature. I think what Smith is suffering from is fear of criticism so he’s sticking with the easy/obvious moves.
I do think Smith and Lindgren have had a good eye for their recruiting of highschool QBs. Hank Bachmeier was a guy they really pursued hard last year, but ultimately he went to Boise. He is their starter as a true freshman and by all accounts he’s been pretty solid so far.
And Brock Purdy was another guy they were onto a little late in the recruiting cycle. We pulled out of that race as soon as Bama offered him(which was too bad because he didnt choose bama and instead went to Iowa)
Purdy is also starting for Iowa this year.
Iowa and Boise State’s combined record right now is 8-0.
Ben Gulbranson, the player we currently have committed for the 2020 class, is having a pretty good season right now too. Completion percentage could be a little higher, but yards and td totals are pretty high.
https://www.maxpreps.com/m/athlete/ben-gulbranson/oqqbSaRLEeaAdqA2nzwY6g/football-fall-19/stats.htm
Gulbranson looks pretty good.
Between him and Gebbia we should be much better.
Purdy is at Iowa State. GA’s guy is at Iowa.
Always get those 2 guys amd their schools flipped. Purdy is starting still, just for Iowa St like BG mentioned. They’re 2-2 with close losses to Iowa and Baylor.
There was also a kid from last year who ended up at Purdue Paul Piferi. Havent heard his name this year.
Petras.
Is he starting for them? Not that he would rather be at OSU anyway, but he sure as hell would have been playing.
They have a senior, Nate Stanley, who is a three year starter and a legit NFL prospect. Petras is now their backup.
Petras is the one at Iowa. But he’s only played about as much as Gebbia so far this year
Yeah, GA’s guy. Smith’s first faceplant.
“They all fell into college football’s blindspot, and nobody explains this better than Jones. He was young for his class, a late bloomer, and he suffered an injury that took him out of the camps where coaches scout en masse. “He might be an example of a guy who could’ve easily been lost in the shuffle,” said Steve Jones, his father. ”
Early in high school, when coaches hurriedly compete to get commitments from the top 14-year-olds, Jones wasn’t heralded at all.

As I have written here before, I can personally attest to size and height bias my whole life, from pickup games to organized sports, and now in the working environment. I have been captain of several baseball and soccer teams at a height of 5’6”. It is amazing to me that our culture oohs and ahhs over large people. We tend to expect more from them — “look at the size of his ______”, “he’s gonna be a big kid”, “Gonna be a great ball player” — talking up the size advantage these kids will have in some fantasy world where size is everything — it isn’t. It is combo of coordination, smarts, and most of all personality. Cases in point Ryan Leaf, Matt Leinhart, and as you have said above Jamarcus Russel.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.businessinsider.com/top-nfl-draft-busts-2017-10
When I interview a person to hire for my team, the first thing I see might be their height, but it is the last thing I consider when choosing the right person for the job (that’s why I hire personnel less than 5’4” ;))
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/393518/
— it is the size of the fight in the dog and not the size of the dog in the fight.
Just be glad because tall people die much sooner. It’s taxing on the heart.
Most of my tall (6’+) friends have back problems too. My dad is 6’-1”and grand father 6’-4” (lived to 93)….go figure, I’m just a runt, or a spawn of the stable boy.
So is watching Beaver football……
Now that I’m older the height thing doesn’t bother me as much, but it was sure tough as a kid — I hope that perspective makes me a good boss.
Audie Murphy was 5’5″.
If you say “who?” I’ll punch you in the balls.
Audie is a stud.
https://www.quora.com/Do-tall-soldiers-have-an-advantage-during-war-Have-countries-with-people-of-tall-stature-benefited-from-such-height-advantages?top_ans=88319766
Also, the late bloomer thing is all relative, some kids are blooming right when they should be but they got put in to school early. Yours truly for example, September birthday, got shuffled off to first grade at 5, graduated when I was 17. I was maybe 160# at 5’10”. A year later after a year in the Marine Corps I was 5’11” 180# and by all rights should have been a high school senior.
My son is also a September baby and I put him in school at just turned 7 instead of just turned 6. It’s helped him in all facets and with his mom’s Viking genetics he’s a good size dude already.
Captain of baseball and soccer not football and basketball. Why would height matter for a job?
Height shouldn’t matter for most jobs (there are obvious extremes like having a little person do the work for a stocker stocking high shelves in a grocery store), but like the article says about white collar and leadership jobs, their is perception or bias that taller people make better leaders. There many socioeconomic precursors we are missing here, but for the most part, pretty spot on with my experiences.
https://www.inc.com/john-warrillow/the-surprising-role-height-plays-in-your-potential-as-a-leader.html
Not a qb but Cooper Kupp comes to mind. I read that he researched “late bloomer” predictability stats for a project at Eastern Washington.
https://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/why-cooper-kupp-is-the-player-to-watch-in-college-football-this-season-082316
He went from a A Kupp to a D Kupp.
Heard he’s a polygamist. There’s a documentary about it, “2 Girls, 1 Kupp”
Looks like we’ll be getting both former Illinois DBs in for a visit. Bennett Williams and Ron Harge are both JUCO guys, and will be visiting for the Utah game. Williams has Oregon and Colorado offers.
Shit, Williams had a typo in his first post and said “oregon state” but has since deleted it and now it reads “oregon”
Yay, we get fucked with again
Just figure from now on if it’s an elite recruit they mean Oregon, whether they can spell it or not.
While I get the sentiment, I definitely don’t want Jonathan Smith to have that mentality. The coaching staff shouldn’t be discounting ourselves from getting elite recruits just because we’re Oregon State.
It was a joke.
I think Hamilcar has a good chance to get drafted. What do yall think? probably 6th or 7th round but Ive seen enough out of him to think he good make it in the league. He is our best defender, partly because he stays healthy unlike morris and moore, and he plays with the mentality that he is our best defensive player, he hits hard too.
Angry: “It was a joke.”
Freud: “There’s no such thing as a joke.”
Sigmund was no fun at parties.
Avery had been looking good as well
Gumbs, if he isn’t another habitual health question.
Yup, I had Gumbs for my D mvp this season, along with Hodgins for O mvp. Would have gotten both of Gumbs stayed upright.
Barnes on Reser with Clownzano:
“It’s a crumbling asset, the west side. It needs our attention. We’ve spent the last 12-14 months hot on the trail on that. We are in a quiet phase in both feasibility and fundraising, more to come on that, and we couldn’t be happier with our progress and more to come on that. When will that come? We will tie a bow around that in terms of exact timing, but certainly we’re thinking in terms of the next few years for sure.”
Translation………..we don’t have any idea and don’t have the money.
Or, “How long do I have left till full PERS kicks in?”
Back in 2012, Bob Decarolis said there was a “year long feasibility study” being conducted to determine the future of Reser.
https://kval.com/sports/content/feasibility-study-to-determine-possible-reser-stadium-upgrades
In April 2019, Barnes said “We’re toward the end of a very comprehensive feasibility study for the stadium”
https://www.oregonlive.com/sports/g66l-2019/04/d9a0b18f452452/oregon-state-athletic-director-scott-barnes-addresses-reser-stadium-wayne-tinkle-future-portland-final-four-q-and-a.html
Yesterday, Barnes says we’re in a quiet phase in terms of feasibility and “When will that come? We will tie a bow around that in terms of exact timing, but certainly we’re thinking in terms of the next few years for sure.”
Next few years???? How much freaking time and money is being wasted on this never-ending master plan and will Barnes even be around when the next feasibility study is announced?
A friend that works for OSU’s concessions contractor passed on this info to me prior to the season. The company wanted to work with OSU this offseason to install upgraded networking and power access so they could modernize the equipment and registers. OSU AD said they would wait until 2022, when the West Side of the stadium is rebuilt and the tech upgraded throughout. (hopefully it will not be painted in Wazzu colors) The plan might take out traditional seating, and add a second club level or another bank of luxury boxes.
This story seems to jive with Barnes interview.
Maybe I am a Luddite but it seems to me like redoing the West side will lead to higher ticket prices and less fans. Bigger stadium, higher prices, more empty seats… How is this a good idea?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3c_pJ_CLJQ
Lol… Build a winner and fans will come to watch no matter where they play the games
Oregon announced Devon Williams joining the team and also announced an OLineman has medically retired. Nice of him to give up his remaining playing days to give that scholarship spot to Williams
“OL Justin Johnson has taken a medical retirement. Can stay on scholarship and remain in school.”
How soon until he transfers somewhere and is healthy enough to play somehow someway
Were all their scholarships full before he retired? If so, that’s really convenient.
Yes. That’s why he was planning to enroll at Oregon State in the first place. Because ducks didnt have an open scholarship and OSU did.
As i understand the rules though, that scholarship doesnt technically become available until next term. So i think Williams has to technically walk on and pay his own way til winter term starts
There’s no way he’s actually paying his own way.
$10000 in a brown paper sack with nike logo on it.
Shadiest program in the nation. Their track coach just got 4 year ban… For track. Imagine the $$ they are passing behind the scenes for football and basketball. Who the hell wants to play for a 8-5 football team without some kind of perk?
What did everyone think of JS’s Clownzano interview? I think he was able to point out the mistakes made eloquently, which shows a great understanding of the game… He never sounds like a dummy, he can be a great coach with time
Canzano is a jackass….have better things to do than watch Canzano enjoy hearing himself talk.
No one likes clownzano… I only listened because I wanted to hear JS’s answers… he was actually asked valid questions about the last game… and I am not sure why you would watch it when you can just listen to it, then you don’t have to see his stupid mug on top of it
No thanks either way.
Did the site break for other this morning? My menu is on the left side.
It looks like I might have to ditch this theme earlier than I thought and get to work on this. I was hoping to do it in the off season. Ugh.
I’m using Apple products (browsing on Safari) and my menu is also on the lower left hand side. Just an FYI
Thanks. The PHP code for this theme is outdated and broken. I will try to fix it myself, else we’ll have to look at alternative themes and possibly down time.
I had a feeling this would happen. The code has been obsolete for some time and slowly breaking.
The site might have some errors today as I try to fix this.
I think I fixed the bad code, but I notice the Twitter feed is now missing. The “thumbs up” code is outdated and not worth fixing all the code, so I might have to find a new rating system.
I’ll have to figure that out. I really hope we can keep this theme!
Also, the site should be running faster.
Okay the Twitter feed is back, but I still can’t figure out why it won’t scroll.
Anyone here good with PHP?
I fixed the Twitter feed so it now scrolls.
The site should be good to go without any need for a new theme now. Very excited — I like this setup.
Guys, some major updates to the site today. Please check these:
1. Twitter feed now both visible and scrolls (scroll bar to move through older tweets)
2. PHP code was fixed so people seeing the logon on the left site is resolved.
3. Bad PHP updated so no need to move to a new theme!
4. Site should be much faster now that PHP code updated to the latest version.
Please confirm your experience. If you use firefox you might have to “turn off blocking” for the site to see the Twitter feed.
All seems fixed for me
Works well on my android mobile browser.
You lost your “donate” buttons on the threads(or maybe they were already gone and I hadnt noticed)
Cool. No donate button on the past few posts.
The old voting system was obsolete and generating code errors. I don’t like the new options as much, so I’m figuring out what to do about it. I like the simple thumb up/down. (Edit: put something decent in place that I’m okay with).
Speaking of donating, people don’t realize a lot of these themes and plugins costs $$$. Comment section alone was like $50 and the start rating system another $60 for the basic plan, which is now obsolete. It’s not just hosting and time/labor.
Luck O da Beav’s……..Aquino from the WBB team not cleared to play.
Doesn’t sound like she’ll ever be cleared. She still practices. Hopefully still helping the team get ready for the next opponent. Rueck doesn’t use all of his scholarships so she isn’t wasting a spot.
Not cleared for the season? Did they put a date on it?
Had to install new thumbs up. The old one’s code was out of date, and they want $360 to renew it.
Are you guys alright with the colors (did orange for the thumb and black for the total). Could do grey thumbs like on the last one if these are too intrusive.
Better than the old one, which was easy to fat thumb the wrong direction. These are slightly further apart
You like the orange or should I go back to the more neutral grey like the old one?
Orange.
I don’t know…that’s a lot of orange thumbs!
Grey blends in a bit better. But we’ll see what people say.
Orange. Can you also add a middle finger? :)
No preference on color.
Site working fine for me on laptop using Firefox and I-phone using Safari.
I prefer gray. The orange is a bit much and from a design standpoint, looks like red, which usually indicates an error or something negative.
I agree.
Let me move it to grey today and see what people think.
IDGAF about the thumbs or their color, but everything is working perfectly. Twitter feed even scrolls again.
Down vote works.
You have to refresh to see your vote which is probably why people are clicking it 1 million times.
No you don’t.
Eggers piece on Elu Aydon makes it pretty clear that his head wasn’t right over the last few seasons; seems squared away now.
Seems like he has been able to stay on the field more this time around. Anyone kept track of his minutes?
https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/440065-353101-at-359-pounds-beavers-aydon-making-bigger-impact
Probably all the orange here, but just gotta pump some sunshine.
Per ESPN, Oregon State was the most improved team in the nation in September. According to ESPN’s SP+ rating, the Beavers are up 15.9 adjusted points per game over 2018.
https://twitter.com/BeaverFBNews
SP+, improvement in adjusted points per game…………….must relate, at some point, to W/L?
GO BEAVS
We’d be 3-1 with the right QB and K on the field.
We’d be 4-0 if we had the “right” players and coaches… Maybe Alabama will send us some lol… angry you sure are a funny one… Hell, in that case we’d be National Champions and wouldn’t be rebuilding
Yeah, or we could just play the two better players on our bench. Or that. You know, instead of hiring Alabama coaches.
I like how you say two better players… I think Gebbia would likely turn the ball over more times, be just as inconsistent, and that isn’t necessarily better… I’d agree if we had an absolute playmaker on the bench, I don’t agree with what I’ve seen of him… as far as the Kicker is concerned, it seems like we are in pretty bad shape because our backups suck too… Go look at Alex Kessmans numbers for Pitt, he’s terrible… Scarton got beat out by this guy… I’d rather give Rodriquez a chance lol
Maybe the QB on our roster with the Alabama offer would be an option?
Lolol.
You’re right, if Mike Vick from 2001 came back to life at OSU right now we’d probably be 3-1
-18??
People testing the orange thumb or do we have bots?
Or just 1 person clearing cookies, refreshing and voting repeatedly?
Such a sad life either way.
And now the sadness can be measured
There are tools who use the tools.
Here’s the note from ESPN
When you bottom out, as Oregon State did over the past couple of years (I would say going 3-21 in 2017-18 qualifies as “bottoming out”), your first few stages of improvement are invisible. The Beavers are just 1-3, they’re projected to finish only around 3-9, and while their offense is exciting, their defense is still a miserable 112th in defensive SP+.
Make no mistake, however: They’ve improved. They are up to 71st after a last-second loss to Stanford, they have scored at least 28 points in each game, and while the defense is mostly moribund, it has at least one disruptive aspect in linebacker Hamilcar Rashed Jr. (7.5 tackles for loss, five sacks).
SP+ has Beavs #71
UCLA is ranked #66
It predicts UCLA will win 36-32 on Saturday, and gives the Beavs a 42% chance to pull off an upset
What would their record be if they didn’t try the fake punt at Hawaii or have a FG blocked and give up a 35 yard KO return VS Stanford? You have no idea what a QB or kicker who haven’t played would do.
Oh I see. Angry@Angry is thumbing up his posts and thumbing down mine again. No limit to the amount per user with this plugin. Looks like I have to put a restriction on the child.
Please stop noticing him!

Plz notice me senpai *_*
What, you don’t think he wants to return for another one win campaign?
PHIL STEELE REPORT (WEEK 6):
#67 Oregon State at #85 UCLA
The Beavers have dropped their past five P12 road openers by 32 ppg. LTH (‘16) the Bruins returned an interception 40 yds for the game-clinching TD w/2:14 remaining (UCLA 444-307 yd edge, 38-24 -11). The Bruins have dominated the all-time series vs the Beavers with a 43-16-4 mark. They have, however, dropped 2 of the past 4 matchups inside of the Rose Bowl including 2012 when they came in ranked #19. Chip Kelly is 0-3 ATS as a HF with UCLA losing outright to SDSt this year. OSU QB Luton is hitting 57% with a 9-0 ratio and RB’s Jefferson and Pierce have combined for 650 rush and 6.9 ypc! OSU is allowing foes 23 ypg above their ssn avg but UCLA is allowing 11 above. Last week Arizona QB Tate and RB Taylor were both late scratches, but Arizona still prevailed over UCLA 20-17. Take away that 50-point explosion vs Wash St when down 49-17 and UCLA is averaging just under 17 ppg. Ore St did trail Stanford 21-0 last week and rallied to only lose by 3 with a 501-353 yard-edge. UCLA QB Thompson-Robinson was injured last week so check status.

I know nothing about UCLA’s FG kicker but I have to believe he is better than what the beavs put on the field. Although, Chip never seemed to worry about having a good FG kicker in the past and that did come back to bite him a few times (Stanford game in 2011 I think it was).
Statistically, Hodgins is the 7th rated receiver in the nation according to something called “Statheads”. I believe he’s played one less game than some of the receivers ahead of him with the Beavs early bye.
This one is tough. The Beav defense has improved, and UCLA QB banged up. The Beav offense should get to the 30 point mark, but could get blanked in a quarter or two if Mr Hyde shows….more missed FGs or missed opportunities? The Beavs are better in scoring Offense/Defense, Rush Defense, turnover ratio, just about every meaningful category except for special teams. Being a road game evens things up a bit too. Could go either way, and I can’t say Beavs win cuz then they’ll get blown out.
UCLA 31
Beavs 30 ;)

My gut says special teams gives up at least one TD and that’s the difference and costs OSU the game.
Steele’s 34-30 prediction seems pretty good. Until they show they can win close games you can’t pick them. That’s a takeaway from last week. Choker misses 2FGs to cost them the win. Luton stalls on a game winning drive. Rinse, repeat.
Hopefully we just start playing 4 downs anytime we get across the 50.
Coach to make it 3rd and short, then run or play actions on 3rd and 4th down. Catch them sleeping or move the chains.
Enough with this field goal bullshit
Play all 4 downs when across the 50? Never happen…….too sensible; doesn’t even require the opponent be “sleeping”, not when you have AP, JJ, and Colletto.
One was blocked because togiai
I changed the thumbs to grey for today.
Let me know what you think. To me they blend in better, but I’m open to majority rule.
looks good. I agree with the comment that the old scheme looked red, not orange
Is there a way to have a counter that counts A@A’s votes in orange and the rest of the votes in grey?
We could make his an orange sad face.
Grey thumbs look much better
Grey, just like the sky in Reser. Orange ?, we hardly knew ya.
Here’s a simple way evaluate the new up-down button.
“Jerry Pettibone was the best coach OSU ever had and was unfairly fired.”
You resigned, not fired. Even you knew you sucked.
Really seems like if Lindsey is healthy we should be incorparating more Jet sweeps with him and Champ, or at least motioning them as a fake. Since Hodgins sees 30% of the pass attempts anyway they’re mostly running ghost routes. This way we’d keep them in good shape (lol) and try to open up even more holes for the RB’s.
Thought it was interesting that they had Lindsey back returning punts versus Stanford. Not sure if it meant he was fully health or they didn’t want to risk getting Champ hurt because they think higher of Champ. Not a lot of punt returns games 1-3 but I think it was Champ back there previously.
Lindsey let two punts go that LOOKED catchable, both of which ended up being downed inside the 10. Not a great start to his PR career.
Yeah punt fielding for the beavs was not good
Very poor judgment.
Great avatar BTW.
OT but on the topic of football: Which Pac-12 school would you want the Beavs to emulate as a program (coaching style, culture, playing style, etc)?
I though of this as I was looking at some of the kids the beavs are recruiting and which pac-12 schools they have offers from.
WSU and UW, for different reasons.
Tree; beef and a (usually) dependable ground game.
Alabama… :)
I’d say WU probably because they are all around sound.
If we #rowthebeaver, we don’t have to emulate anybody.
However, if we have to pick, U Dub. The catch is we have put a giant lake next to Reser so I can have a beer on Wannabeav’s fifty foot yacht while sailgating.
I was thinking for the type of player we are able to recruit, Utah seems like a program I’d be proud of. Also like their coach’s demeanor and grit on defense.
Coach Whit’s “I wish I could find some fiber in Utah” face is pretty iconic.
I gave all my spare cash to Angry for support of the site
Utah D and u dub O.
Angry, I like the new thumbs (either color OK by me), but I can’t get mine to work — and I’d hate to miss out on grading Pettibone!
I use FireFox and you have to refresh to see your vote count.
That’s weird. I use firefox, am logged in, and I don’t have to do that.
Yep, that’s it… must be logged in.
Notice right after I did that A@A upvotes stopped happening…
Yea…it worked….thanks
Try logging in and then voting.
I put a restriction on because people like A@A were just thumbing up their own stuff over and over.
My bum is itchy.
did Jack upvote his stuff a lot?
I might try to find new thumbs.
This system has some flaws apparently. The last system was good, but I can’t believe they want $360 per year for it. They’re nuts.
Broadcast for game? PAC 12 network?
PAC12 net. Or, Fubo TV with free trial.
What do the Beavs need to do to win?
Stop the run. Biggest weakness of the defense is the run defense.
If they can hold UCLA to under 200 yds rushing, it’s a win.
Win the field position battle. When drives stall, need to make UCLA go the distance to score.
Move the ball on the ground early and often. Unsure if Jefferson is a full go, but he and Pierce make quite a 1-2 punch. Get into manageable third downs with runs and check downs. Then take the shots downfield with Hodgins.
Take what the defense gives. Luton has gotten away with some bad throws. Need to take the higher percentage throws.
Can they do all of these things? No.
If they can make the first half close, they will have a shot to win. The less the game is on Lutons arm to win, the better.
We will find out the identity of this team this weekend. Do they build on last week or do they regress?
At a similar point last year, win vs fcs then close loss at Nevada followed by a 4 game beat down. A win here is big as the back half of the schedule is brutal.
This might be the best backfield in the last 10 years — Artivis Pierce, BJ Baylor, and JermarJefferson. Can’t go wrong with any of these guys….all have good lunch-pail/ workmanship qualities about them. Maybe blocking is suspect?
“Biggest weakness of the defense is the run defense.”
Beavs are #100 in rush D; that’s impacted by the game vs the other OSU. Nearly half the rush yds given up so far were against OkState. I think holding UCLA to 200 yds is a low bar for this squad with Aydon and Whittley clogging the middle and, apparently, Morris available.
Bruins start true freshmen at LG and LT, could be another factor in holding their RB Kelley in check.
“Get into manageable third downs with runs and check downs. Then take the shots downfield with Hodgins.”
I fear the Bruins passing D rank of #129 in the nation will tempt Lindgren to pass too often on first and second down. Hope I’m wrong.
Re: field position……gotta figure we’ll see much less of the “I’ll just let that punt roll past me rather than fair catch” mentality from our returners.
If whittley decides to play four quarters, and make plays like he did when it didn’t matter last game, he could be a difference maker.
you sound like Riley with that identity stuff
I’ve seen the most success for this offense when the Beavs go more uptempo. There is less thinking for Luton… they call a play and go. It also keeps the defense off balance. However, if they start going 3 and out, the Defense will be gassed by halftime. I also think it plays into Chip’s style with an uptempo style. I expect a high scoring game, but I believe the defense will be critical…. as the team who gets the last stop will win.
Good theory about less thinking for Luton; I thought going under center was also effective.
might as well be under center doing play action fakes because he’s certainly no threat to be doing the read option. that system is better suited to Gebbia, but we’ve been through that already
Is Claeys worth a look?
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/27769103/washington-state-defensive-coordinator-tracy-claeys-resigns
He did a great job here at Minnesota. Put some guys in the league that are still playing.
The good: usually made very good adjustments at halftime.
A football technician/ tactician. D was always better when complementary ball control offense was working.
Was able to use creative blitz packages to generate pressure.
Decent talent evaluator.
The bad: Personality of a Chia Pet……….that had a lobotomy.
Poor recruiter and went for the low hanging fruit. Never actually ate fruit:)
He weighs close to 400 lbs. Is a heart attack waiting to happen.
Got the gig at Wazzu by totally shutting down Leach’s team in the Holiday Bowl with five DB’s
suspended for the game.
“Personality of a Chia Pet……….that had a lobotomy.”
Speaking of personality, is the entire coaching staff of the Beavs too laid back? Not saying we need a Cory Hall (what’s happened to him?) on the sidelines but who is animated enough to fire guys up when that is appropriate?
I like coaches with an aggressive manner: Dennis, Leach, the mad hatter, etc.
Wonder if he took offense to Mike Leach’s “They’re fat, dumb, happy and entitled” comments after their loss last week?
Not joking. At 400lbs, I could see how he might take that pretty personally
@nicebeaver, watching Cincinnati game. I thought they had a black field for tonight’s game? Was hoping to see it live.
Fake news?
Funny, they faked it to try to sell more tickets. Wonder how many people who follow that team bought tix to this game hoping to see the new field and didnt know? False advertising?
But they won the game, so nobody will care.

You can’t do custom colored fields anymore. Boise State and Eastern Washington are grandfathered.
Too bad. Might actually get me to watch some games I wouldn’t normally see.
Seems strange they would allow teams do to whatever the F they want with a basketball court, but football fields are off limits.
There are no rules regarding turf color, Coastal Carolina has a teal colored turf put in last season. There are rules about size and color of field logos, lines/marks and numbers…but not turf color.
The black turf would be legal. The giant logo and red lines & numbers would not.
http://amarefs.org/FR16.pdf
“Playing Surface
ARTICLE 4. The playing surface is the material or substance within the field
of play, including the end zones.”
I read an article about Boise’s turn and it said they filed for a patent on non-green field turf, so other teams now need to clear it with Boise St before they choose to go the non-green route?
Everything else I read agrees with what you said. No rules against it. But there are some uniform rules that go along with these alternate colors because they want players to be somewhat visible.
Boise St managed to trademark athletic fields that include grass that is blue. So far that trademark has not been challenged, but the “Smurf Turf” is fairly ubiquitous with BSU football, so it would probably stand.
Didn’t realize Chocker had done a TV ad.
https://www.ispot.tv/ad/oCNm/the-general-football-tryouts
Haha. Nice find.
Stop me if you’ve heard this story before.
UCLA will be starting a redshirt sophomore QB in his first ever start, vs Oregon State this weekend.
Austin Burton. Was a 3* pro-style QB out of highschool.
At least he is pro style rather than a mobile QB. But something tells me he’ll discover his new found mobility vs OSU.
OTOH, maybe he’ll become acquainted with Hamilcar Rashed Jr.
Someone want to explain to me how to stop getting an email notification every time someone posts in this thread?
I don’t know why I’m getting bombarded with emails. I didn’t subscribe to anything
Sounds like a glitch from all the updates I did.
See if it happens in the game thread tomorrow. Anyone else experiencing this?
You can also try logging in/out again and seeing if you have a “subscribe” or “manage subscription” button at the bottom of the page.
It says I am subscribed to this thread. I never subscribed to anything.
It also says “this site is experiencing technical difficulties”.
So I cannot unsubscribe.
It’s Jack from the great beyond. Just in time for Halloween…. bwah–ha—ha—ha.
Interesting game today. When crappy mets lousy anything can happen.
I do think the Beavs will be able to put up some points, but enough? Let’s go Beavs 35 Bruins 34…. Maybe even comes down to a missed or made field goal.
PS: Maybe “potato” Chip Kelly should starting doing a sit-up every time the Bruins score.
BASEBALL:
ICYMI Eggers wrote a piece on Canham and the balance between analytics and gut feel in the coaching approach.
Includes mention of Kevin Abel, saying he, “continues the rehab process after Tommy John elbow surgery last spring. The junior right-hander is at practice every day and, said Canham, has embraced a role as a sort of player-coach. Eggers makes it clear that Abel is not expected to play this season.
BTW, exhibition game today vs SacState at Goss, 1pm. Free admission, concessions closed but you can bring your own food/drinks.
https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/440167-353225-canham-analyzing-2020-beavers
Abel will never pitch for the beavs again. That was clear when he waited a whole year to get his surgery after the CWS. It appears his eyes are on the MLB, and always have been. He could’ve got the surgery after the CWS, but elected not too. Why? So he could go straight from his year+ long rehab to the draft.
I don’t totally blame him, it’s his elbow and his life but don’t lead the team and fans on for 2+ years just own it and move on so we can as well.
Abel is a historic and heroic Beav who (arguably) single-handedly won a title. He can do whatever he wants without criticism.
Yes.
Beavs can’t get off on 3rd down and Luton throws 2 picks in first half. Down 28-7, TG gets his chance to start second half and Beavs make it interesting but fall 45-38
Anderpants and his gang are hangin’ with LSU, only down 7-6 late in the first (they should be ahead). I don’t want to root for Gary, but I can’t stand the SEC. His FG kicker is a hell of a lot better than Choke, just nailed a 47-yarder.
They’re getting killed now.
I got rid of subscribe to comments for now. Something seems wrong with that chunk of code since the updates.
Oklahoma just punted on 4th and goal…….from the 44 yard line
Kansas punted from the 2 yd line. 58 yd punt with a 40 yard return and a flask mask by Kansas putting the ball on the 10 yard line for Oklahoma. 1 st and goal
I’m still having issues with this theme’s scripts. I might have to do an overhaul in the off-season.
Just a head’s up.
