    • People laughed last week when I said he should be on the hot seat.

He should be for his coaching/personnel decisions and that reason alone. #19 seems about right. If he loses the remaining games this year and/or doesn’t change QB and K then he should shoot up. I’m not as bearish on Smith as say a Riley, and I do see some improvement and stability in the program, but he’s showing his flaws and limitations.

Chip Kelly should move to #1 if he loses today.

      • I am still laughing… year two and he’s on the hot seat?… we are so good at hiring the best coaches… I think we’ve proven that no one wants to come here… I am willing to give this guy time as long as we are improving, which seems to be the case… You’ve even said all coaches have flaws… I’ll be interested if he has the balls to fire a coordinator when they can’t get it done… something Riley could never do

        • You can laugh all you want, but the National media, which should be more objective than any of us, has him #19 on the hot seat.

He better start winning games and getting the right players on the field starting tonight.

          • As a program legend, he gets more leeway so he’s not on the hot seat yet. Still working with inherited goods. If Gebbia is a bust next year, then yes.

          • Now you are saying the national media is right? Well they also said we should start Luton… something you have a hard time agreeing with and you brought up that the media doesn’t know shit… now in this situation all the sudden they are knowledgeable?

You are right about winning the games though… we’ll see how that plays out

  1. Missing the first half. Hope the Beavs make it worthwhile to come home and watch the 2nd half.
    GoBeavs.
Picking UCLA because I don’t think we can stop a team that isn’t afraid to play 4 down football. Also hope we start playing more 4 down once inside the 50.

  2. I’m sticking with my prediction. Offense and defense put it together and “special” teams gives up the loss.

At the very least kick every ball out the back of the end zone.

  3. Why was Chip smiling like a lunatic after that stop?
Wonder if they told him he’s gone if he loses this game because it makes no sense to go for it at your 30.

  4. Probably the first time in 18 years that I can genuinely say the Beavers looked awesome. That was Dennis Erickson levels of swagger right there!

  5. long way to go, regrettably. Connecting on a bomb to go up 28-0 might have finished it. The game begins now. Chip going up-tempo

  6. Was thinking the same thing. Last year he was a bit clueless as expected for a frosh. This year looks much more comfortable and fluid.

  7. Our back up kickers are garbage but perhaps they can make extra points at least… or just go for two every time, we may end up with more points in the long run

  8. the normal logic model here is to run a two minute drill to stay in the track meet. The one thing OSU can’t afford here is a pick. I say run the ball or run a draw or screen

  9. Coaching error. No reason to not burn clock after the first down was a loss. Way too much time left on the clock for UCLA.

As always, what happens at the end of the first half has potentially a big impact on the game.

  10. Three terrible play calls in that last series. That sucks almost as much as that loser
Choukair missing the extra point. Again, as has happened so many times, the choker Choukair takes the wind out of our sails.

  11. Beavs recovered from the bungled possession. The damn thing about missed kicks is that the setback is more than the loss of a single point; the psychological impact is equally damaging

  12. UCLA shouldn’t have had that last possession. Total Yards for UCLA getting close to OSU’s. Not a great indicator but it shows UCLA is moving the ball. Big first possession for Beav defense to start 2nd half.

  13. so let me say this at the present juncture in the game. OSU 27, UCLA 17. The Beavs defense has not looked very good since the last third of the first quarter. And if UCLA continues to score with some regularity, which looks likely at this point, as OSU begins to lose its composure, the fate of this game resides on the OSU OFFENSE being able to move the chains, principally by running the ball, or they will lose. If Smith and Lindgren think they can win this by having Luton sling it around they are wrong.

  14. And that’s why sound and consistent mechanics/accuracy are more important than padded stats. Those kind of awful throws on routine plays are absolute killers and he’s done that his whole career.

  15. Luton with a chance to redeem himself. A TD drive here would put some pressure on the UCLA qb. Hopefully, Smith and Lindgren noted how tight Luton was on that last throw Run the ball

  16. Lindsey is a good one.
Who was that guy who said the transfers didn’t pan out?
Probably our best players along with hamilcar, RBs, Hodgins.

  17. that replay showing two beavs flailing into the ground after one gets pushed in the face is just a summary of being a beaver fan

  18. since they’re doing everything predictable and terrible, is this where luton is overconfident and his first pick comes to give them even more momentum back?

    • I said that 2 quarters into OK State. Guys got a lady to take care of and with his highlight real hes looking at atleast a 3rd round contract. Thanks for the TD’s brotha.

  19. Classic Luton, couple uncatchable earhole rockets and then a dime to Hodgins. Props to Togiai though. I’ll take it if we can find a way to get a stop.

  20. I know I’m belaboring this point, but notice how much vigor the defense seems to play with when the offense is productive. (notwithstanding the 75 TD run)

  21. I have no idea if Luton is the right QB, but one thing I know for sure is that Hodgins is a great receiver. Unfreaking believable that he is able to pile up these numbers when everyone knows he is getting the ball.

    • Irate answer: Terrible coaching or they dumb or something.

Real Answer: One needs to play back or you are wide open to one of those 3 and 3 play action tds.

  22. Haha announcers talking about two teams run into the ground by Simple Jack. How hard it is to rebuild after he shits up a program.

    • I called him Wheels last game. I didn’t know it was serious!!!

I only caught the second half of the game. It looked like you guys were panicking. Fair, considering the Hawaii game, but UCLA is SUPER bad. And we’re not terrible, we just have refused to play a full game until now.

Chip looked determined to stop the run, so we threw for 5 TDs. Defense game up some TDs, but Chip offenses will do that.

  23. Happy for Jonathan.

This is turning the corner. This is a signature win.

Like Marty Mauer rumbling on 4th down. Any win at the rose bowl is a huge fucking deal.

    • Other than the 75 yard TD, thought the defense was consistent (still bad), but made UCLA chew up time on most of the drives — especially since the Beav offense scored so quickly on those first quarter TDs — figured the D would be winded by the end of the game, and they showed it. Overall, probably good enough to be tenth in the conference, at least a couple of baby steps better than last year.

    • the defense is not great, but it holds its own. What’s that, 3 games against D1 competition that they have held to 31 points? I know it’s not popular here or anywhere else in Beaver nation, but Gary Anderson was right when he said that to win with any consistency in the Pac 12 conference you have to be able to score close to 40 points

      • 31!!! I’ve picked “31” for the last two opponents after the Hawaii game….LOL. Not gloating, just totally random guess that goes with college football. I might go with 31 for the rest of the season with this offense….hahaha

          • Indeed. GA’s underappreciated point is that offenses in the PAC 12 are generally so productive that even good to great defenses will have 30 points scored on them on average and if you can’t match that productivity offensively, you won’t win. This is why he went chasing after Luton, following the Seth and Garretson fiascos, not realizing that he had a guy (McMaryon) who could move the chains consistently.

Holy shit! A complete game and they win. The rest of the conference better watch out, we’re on a one game winning streak!

  25. Onu-HIcks is not good, I don’t know if the freshman year David Morris is ever coming back, but there has to be someone better on the bench. It’s a scary thought that there might not be.

Beavs beat a bad football team. If only the Hawaii and Stanford game could have turned out better.
    Tough game next week.
Beavs better improve a lot this week because Utah will be a hand full.
Beavs have got to be able to run the ball or Utah will eat us alive, Beavs had no running game tonight. If you take away a 59 yd run by Pearce and Lutons 19 yarder, beavs averaged around 3 yds a carry and that was vs. UCLA.
Lutons numbers again look great but it still feels like he missed on possibly more.
    Choukair must be replaced.
Hodgins we better enjoy him while we have him because he’s gone.
Defense and defensive schemes suck, I feel it is coaching more than personal.
    GO BEAVS!!!!

      • Jalen Moore did not play again. I’m assuming when he’s healthy Hicks gets fewer snaps? I think Hicks was benched for a while in the second half. He’s a bad tackler, he’s soft in coverage.

    • The Beavs run game looked good early, as it has in most games. After settling in, teams have determined to stop the OSU run game; the logic being: let’s see if Luton can beat us with his arm. In the first four games Luton had his moments, with the fate of the game being in doubt, but the opposition’s focus on the OSU run game was rewarded because Luton proved sufficiently inconsistent that their stratagem of focusing on the OSU run paid off. It would have paid off last night EXCEPT Luton was able to move the ball through the air in the 3 of the 4 quarters. That one quarter’s worth of productivity on the margin is why OSU won.

Conclusion: against a bad team, OSU can win with 3 quarters worth of good QB play. it will take four quarters worth of good QB play for OSU to beat an average Pac 12 team. The defense is probably not good enough to beat the highest caliber Pac 12 opponent no matter how effective Luton is

  27. What would have you said if f I would have told you that Luton would score 6 TDs and have a 224.8 passer rating after tonight?

  28. I’m just happy we finally won a game. Jemar and Pierce carried not only the ball, but this team. Luton looked good, too.

I do hope this game is the final time we see Choukair ever try an extra point or field goal though. Dude just doesn’t have what it takes.

  29. This game should have been a blow out. The playcalling was not very good; very little diversity when it comes to run plays or screens.

Lindgren likely to say, “we took what the D gave us”. He’s got a point, Bruin pass D is nearly the worst statistically in the country. Still, some runs could have helped the clock situation.

As others have mentioned, JJ is not healthy yet. I wonder if Smith gave him downs primarily because he had lots of relatives/friends at the Rose Bowl.

    • disagree. putting in three tight ends, with Luton under center, signaled a run, but Luton found our guy all alone in the defensive backfield. play of the game. brilliant call.

  30. Gotta give coaches credit; 5 penalties for 33 yds and no TO’s. Players make Plays?……and Coaches influence greatly how those players operate.
Still hate the poor clock management.

Luton finally plays more than 30 minutes and they win. Who’da thunk it. And it only took him 6 years to figure it out. Props to the defense for finally making some stops, ucla is terrible but that has to pump up the confidence a few notches. Well done beavs.

  32. Yeah, I thought the D has been gradually improving. That 4th down stop early in the game was huge and set the tone. They’ll never be good this year, but they can maybe be a “bend but don’t break” type D.

    • #10 was awful he looks like he’s afraid. Morris would make this defense so much better. And I do not like playing off so far with our corners. We give up 5-7 yd passes on 3rd and short.

    • I’m good with bend-don’t-break as long as their is a turn-over or two given the amount of plays (opportunities) the opposing offense has to execute — can lead to miscues, etc.

      • UCLA ran 89 frickin’ plays and committed zero turnovers. Chip’s stupidity or arrogance with going for it in the first quarter and Smith’s cleverness with the pooch kick seemed to be the difference in the game. Bruins couldn’t make up those 14 points.

        • Yeah, there was a tipped pass and the fumble-score by UCLA — other than those opportunities, this team is light years away from being even a bend-don’t-break pedigree — there is just not enough talent on this team to create or pressure the offense into a TO opportunity. Beavs have had two back-up QBs come in and look rather comfortable….gotta get better in pass pressure.

        • The increase in TFL’s is helping them get off the field in some situations, but there is still a lot of work to be done. The improvement with some of the players like Rashad Jr. and Aydo is noticeable. The corners give so much cushion that even a backup QB is going to be comfortable unless there is pressure. When they can’t get pressure like the second half last night they get picked apart.

  33. Happy to be wrong about this one. I thought the mobile qb that led UCLA to a win over WSU would be playing….Chip played it poorly not kicking the 3 and saving time when down by 17. It was a three score game and he wasted time.

That said, good win. Beavs should be 4-1 right now, which would be encouraging for recruiting

Utah @ OSU is tempting to attend in person…can’t stand Utah and the stadium needs to be loud.

  34. A good response after last week’s close loss. Shows the team has not given up. Have quite an offensive identity now. Defense is improving incrementally.

Good play calls helped by weird decision by Kelly to go for it early. Not to say the Beavs wouldn’t have capitalized but it certainly accelerated the process. What a call with the inside/squib/drop kick. Can’t do it again for a while but it worked!

Utah will be tough if they have their rb. If not, it’ll be a good fight.

  35. I don’t expect anyone to see everyone jumping on the bandwagon. But the truth of the situation is that the Beavers ARE still in charge of their own destiny in the Pac12 Championship. They’re in the drivers seat!!!

  36. Thanks to all. As the game progressed I kept thinking how much fun I would have reading the ongoing comments you all made during the game. I wasn’t disappointed. From “what the fuck is happening here?” (first quarter)..” to “oh well, we’ll find a way to lose”…(second quarter)…to “This is great!” or “That was a terrible call!” or “Luton is (or did) some terrible thing that is going to cost us the game!” or “he threw a nice touchdown there but there were some bad ones before that!” (and so on in the second half). Then the final fourth quarter minutes of secretly praying we would win but saying out loud “We’ll find a way to lose, etc.” just to prepare in case that was the outcome. It’s fun to read the ebb and flow of outlooks and comments made in real time.

  37. With Colletto redshirting, Angry Beaver gets tabled (unless they find someone else to run it). I hope he can develop into an effective linebacker, appears to be a good athlete.

Does anyone have any thoughts on red-shirting Jamar? This would be the week for the decision to be made if I’m calculating correctly. I would seriously consider it. If Pierce gets hurt, they could always pull it if he’s healthy.

    • one of the more positive outcomes from the UCLA game is that Luton has proved he can get the first down by diving or driving ahead. Now imagine this: after doing that on 3rd and short, and better yet, 4th and short, imagine dropping back from under center and hitting Hodges in a crossing route for a long gainer

  38. Day after random thoughts

Luton played his best game, I think I saw only two bad throws and there were a couple drops.

Hopefully a second WR can step up consistently so the offense can keep moving when Hodgins is double teamed. Lindsey looks like he can be that guy but I think he’s dropped at least a couple passes this year.

Jefferson should sit if he’s not feeling 100%. He looked lethargic when he got his carries. Pierce looks like he’s playing for a job next year. Redshirt should be discussed.

Flemings getting trucked by Pierce was hilarious.

Coaches made the right play calls at the right time on offense.

Defense looked better and faster but lots of work still to do. Still susceptible to big plays. Whittley didn’t do anything in the game. Aydon is really trying this year to make plays.

4 of the 5 top tacklers for the game were linebackers. That is a good sign. Last year’s top tackler was a safety and it was by a lot.

Everyone was confused by the drop kick. Camera guy, announcers, UCLA players, referees, me. Good scouting and execution by special teams. Didn’t even notice it was Rodriguez on the field and not Choukair.

It was nice to see the Beavs close out the game and not just hold on at the end.

    • I agree with everything but Whit, when hes in they either double team him or he pushes into the pocket and redirects plays. Some of those linebacker plays are driven by Whit making the pocket a horseshoe.

      • Yes I agree. He blew a play up on the goal line but missed the tackle. He also flat backed a guy to rush the passer but qb took off for a first.

  39. Totally out of left field, but I still don’t understand why the administration wouldn’t schedule 13 games when it’s there for the taking? Get a Group of Five cupcake on the schedule at home. It lead to the Riley 10 win season. I don’t want to see another road game against Hawaii unless there’s 13 games.

      • Maybe not well-stated, but that was my point. They played Idaho and Eastern Washington which helped them get to the Sun Bowl and 10 wins. They were strategic about it. There have been two seasons since that I’m aware of where they passed on playing 13 games.

Both rodents have impressive wins! Too bad the Powerball is only 80 million, as obviously this means I am destined to win. 500 mill and Parker would be calling games from Angrybeavs Pressbox at Beavergopher Stadium.

  41. Is there any video of the drop kick by Rodriguez?
I keep reading it was a beauty, but somehow there aren’t any video highlights of it

  42. The Beavs should be in the Civil War.
I’ve seen the Ducks a few times now and they look like shit each time. Definitely not the same Ducks. Mario is a bad coach, too. I’d argue the Beavs have a better offense this year. So we’ll see if the D keeps progressing toward a bend-but-don’t-break style.

  43. I saw them actually playing to win throughout UCLA. They had been so close twice and they are finally breaking through those mental hurdles. Looking forward to seeing them surprise some people down the road.

I tihnk this year we will get a most improved trophy and next year Smith is Pac 12 COTY

  44. It was a good win vs a BAD team.

Luton had the best game of his career and put together a game-long performance I didn’t believe he was capable of. He managed the speed of the game well and looked more comfortable managing his body in the pocket. All stuff he’s shown improvement with under this staff. He still threw some backside-earhole rockets and asked a lot out of his receivers. He had a few of his patented mechanical breakdowns and atrocious misses in routine drive-killing situations that must drive Lindgren nuts. But if he could find a way to stay disciplined and clean those moments up they could have a shot to win a couple more games.

The defense again looked improved and the players that are beginning to put it together and play with aggression are starting to show themselves. Still very talent deficient, but there is tangible improvement and they played hard for all 4 quarters even when they got beat badly. Hard to ask for more than that at this point in Year 2 given how bad they were last year.

The coaching was better but not perfect. Was frustrating watching them save a minute or so of clock for UCLA on that 4th quarter drive but bailed themselves out by getting some first downs. Won’t get that lucky against a better team as we saw against Stanford.

Overall, it’s a good win for the program and gives a lot of credence to the staff to keep asking the kids to buy-in and compete. But after watching the game a few times my expectations moving forward are tempered by just how horrifically bad UCLA looked. #firechipkelly

    • …gives a lot of credence to the staff to keep asking the kids to buy-in and compete.

^^^^^^That is the big takeaway from this game. Finally a W in conference as a reward for the work they’ve been putting in.

This coaching staff, while frustrating at times, isn’t dumb. They may be a little nerdy, but it’s looking like JS has the degree of willingness to take risks that Riley never had. One thing sure, the Dawgs are missing JS.

  45. From a UCLA board:

“The house cleaning must start now. It’s too likely late to bring in a new coach, so someone already on-staff will probably be promoted. But not one of them merits that. Believe it or not, Mike Riley might be a suitable interim hire, as he has DC and HC experience and knows the PAC12.”

    HUHHHHH?
