Utah thread getting stale and we’ll want a fresh one for the CW next weekend.
So meantime, lets use this one for Spring FB and the 2 non-con baseball games vs that basketball school, Gonzaga. And Tinkle.
1) Spring FB set to start Tuesday, word is Smith will allow reporters some access to practices, what do y’all think of this?
2) What’s taking so long with Tinkle’s reward?
3) Is it critical for the Beavs to start a new winning streak Monday?
GO BEAVS !
First!
Second!
What a game! Heartbreaker for UCLA. Last second shot in ot by suggs to win it.
Want Zags to win it but Baylor is tough. Should be a great game.
Transitive property would have said the Beavs would have beat Gonzaga in OT. Luck of the Beavs to end up on the other side of the bracket!
Those “what ifs” will break your heart. But it is nice to know the beavs could hang with anybody in March.
I think Coach Tinkle is in the same position that many Mike Riley Fan’s were saying, “We can’t do any better and we should accept mediocrity.” Sure Tinkle took this team to an Elite 8; but with only 2 post season appearances in 7 years, this isn’t exactly a monumental Coaching job. Also like Mike Riley, everyone likes Coach Tinkle. He just saved the University a ton of money by not taking his bonus for the season. He’s a great guy and who isn’t impressed with his backward half-court shooting skills. In the case of Mike Riley, I think those Fans who wanted to keep him were wrong. However; for Coach Tinkle and OSU Basketball, I think we cannot do better and he should be given an extension. It would take a monumental task to get OSU Basketball to become a perennial powerhouse again. OSU Athletics needs to fix football first. We do not have the funds or resources to fight on two fronts. Coach Tinkle will give us some entertaining games and he has been routinely successful against the UofO. Along with a post season run every few years I think that will keep the hot seat a little cooler. Go Beavs!
I agree with you, I too see the Riley comparisons… that being said, Tinkles reasoning about the team not buying in because of the coaches sons will now be put to the test… I am usually pretty cynical of “reasons” for underachievement but it does line up with what I saw. A team that never really bought in until the very end of the season… I would give him three more… no lifetime contract BS, unless it’s tied to NCAA Tourney births
Some say it’s best to have a coach with 5 years to sell recruits. Is it true that brand new coaches are often given that much?
Anyway, I’m good with 3 or 4 with benchmarks (tourney appearance?) for additional each year.
As for the team buying in when coaches sons are on the roster, I think that is only part of the story. I remain convinced that Tinkle is a better coach without Tres on the squad, same may apply to Thompson if he stays and ET leaves.
The pressure of coaching kin has to impact a coaches performance and decision making.
Just so you know, I like my “new winning steak” medium rare!
Good catch buddy!
Someone has to keep an eye on you all the time! :)
Another question is, if we were to not extend Tinkle, who would OSU go after?
The market for coaching candidates is not great this year. Next year might be a different story.
I guess I’m skeptical regarding Big Tinks, but I understand OSU doesn’t really have any options other than extending his contract. I hope everyone realizes his sudden and unexpected success is based on six games out of a seven-year career of mediocrity, including a season where he had FOUR Top 100 recruits on his roster and produced a .500 team. If “coach-ball” didn’t work, that’s on him also, right? He couldn’t find the complementary pieces for success. I hope he’s found a formula and can build a program that finishes above .500 in league play consistently. I think he’s received a get of jail free card and it’s now time to do something with it, no excuses.
I agree^^^^^
Spot on. The coaches sons had extended skill exhibitions for pro exposure at the expense of team chemistry/success. That’s tawdry. A one year extension was the right thing to do based on this years’ run, but looking critically at the w/l column next season is also the right thing to do based on extended performance.
“I think he’s received a get of jail free card and it’s now time to do something with it, no excuses.”
Sure, in theory. In practice… “or else what?”
Considering the 2021 run, the less credit you give Tinkle, the more you have to chalk up that stretch to pure luck and coincidence. I find it hard to believe you could get such balanced contribution from so many different guys over a period like that without a reasonable amount of credit going to the coach. It would be one thing if the team was carried by one or two star players, but that’s not what happened.
Agree, OH: There was some good coaching involved.
Stanford does EVERYTHING a possible to lose the title game, but luck out to a win. What awful execution down the stretch. Not what a championship team is supposed to do.
Happy Easter Angrybeavs!
And you also!
There seems to have a lot of commitment issues with Tinkle
Does the women’s tournament generate any revenue for the conference? I know the mens generated an all time high.
No, outside of football and basketball, the other sports don’t generate any extra payouts as far as I know.
I know that in general they don’t operate in the profit margin but wasn’t sure if the tournament gave payouts for tv revenue. Especially with 2 teams in the championship.

Maybe PAC12 WBB will get some respect, but this news item shows it’s still a ways off for our Beav Gals:
“The West coast disrespect has lessened in recent years with Oregon’s rise, but is still there…”
Adia Barnes is quoted with a bit more balanced take: “For me to constantly see the Pac-12 have no respect, it’s continuously and it’s always happening,” Arizona coach Adia Barnes said. “So now I’m hoping that with both of us in the championship game, that the Pac-12 will get more respect, and the East Coast bias will stop. It’s not going to stop overnight, but I think that you need to respect the Pac-12 a lot more.”

Tinkle get’s an extension
https://twitter.com/JesseSowaGT/status/1379124777240076289?s=20
According to Jesse Sowa:
Oregon State wasted little time recognizing and rewarding coach Wayne Tinkle for his team’s run to the Elite Eight. The school announced today a four-year contract extension for Tinkle that takes him through the 2026-27 season.
Technically, it’s a three-year extension plus another year for making this year’s NCAA tournament.
Tinkle’s extension is what was expected. I wanted until 24/25 with higher pay to offset shorter length. But of course, they had to over react to the situation and give more years than really necessary. Pay should move toward the higher tier of PAC12 coaches. Maybe $2.5M avg per year with higher postseason bonus amounts.
Hopefully they agreed to a low buyout to offset the length of the deal.
Wow, lifetime contract
No, this is a lifetime contract
https://kuathletics.com/kansas-signs-mens-basketball-head-coach-bill-self-to-lifetime-contract/
Do you mean higher buyout? Dachel mentions that the buyout was probably increased from $750k.
That’s the buyout Tinkle would owe OSU if he left on his own. The OP is talking about the buyout OSU would owe Tinkle if they fired him.
I have zero confidence we lowered that buyout. It seems OSU always offers guaranteed contracts, i.e. the coach would be owed whatever’s left on life of the contract if they get fired early.
But some coaches don’t take what is owed to them because they are amazing citizens.
yeah that’s what I meant. If Tinkle were to be fired, the cost to buyout his contract would be lower than a full guarantee. It was a hope but I think it’s pretty standard in any head basketball coach contract to do full guarantees.
It’s what’s causing UW to keep their coach. He’s owed 12M right now for the rest of his contract.
I agree 100%, they should have gone with more money and less time. They saved a bunch of money from not having to pay his bonuses, so why not just increase his salary by that amount?
I know ADs prefer longer contracts over larger salaries because it’s less financial commitment, but they sure screw themselves if performance drops off.
Lol, typical OSU with Tinks…
It’s like a dude having sex for the first time at age 40, so he proposes to the girl right on the spot.
Always important to have an extended Tinkle after sex, good or bad.
This is a 26 year drought followed by bad sex followed by good sex and hoping the good sex will continue
Well, once you figure out works…keep doing it!
1 would argue bad sex is better than no sex, and then after that bad sex it led to the best sex of your life. Not a bad move to lock that down.
Peak sex
You might be right Bill, this was the furthest the Beavs have gone in my lifetime so maybe they don’t go that far again. But what’s the alternative? Insist we’ll get a better coach who routinely takes us there? Extending him was the right move for multiple reasons
I agree that he should be extended, he earned it. Just have some issues with the details.
I’ll add in, I probably would have had to make the same deal if I was the AD. It’s a marriage and you have to jump in with two feet. The other risk is to be school forever chasing a coach and Beavs can’t afford to do that.
Six years is too much.
Five is reasonable, because it allows this group of players to play until graduation, and then four years of another recruiting class.
Would have preferred 4 years plus a one year extension every time he made the tourney or wins the conference.
Looks like Zach Wilson, QB that we narrowly missed out on in 2017 recruiting, could end up being the #2 pick in the draft.
Our list of “almost got em” QB recruits seems to generally do pretty well wherever they end up playing.
Saw that Savannah Samuel was leaving the WBB team and we currently only have 7 scholarship players coming back next year. Hopefully Rueck has some transfers ready to come replace the players we’re losing. Lots of good players in the portal
Losing her and Goforth really hurts.
Lot of transfers in the past couple years. That’s what 5 in the past year? Morris, Slocum, Goforth, Simmons and Samuel. Ouch.
#Family
I actually had forgotten she was on the roster.
We have lots of talent coming in the next few years, but will need a few transfers to fill those time gaps as well as the departing seniors. Aside from them, Goforth is probably hardest to replace talent wise.
They were the only two in their original class and both are gone now. TVO wouldn’t count since she reclassified.
Pandemic hits pretty hard. They didn’t have that real college experience and the first year is the hardest, just an isolated sports world and both were from far from home. Any good northwest ball players looking to be close to home?
Gone from a embarrassment of riches at guard to we are screwed in a few days. Team could suck next year with two frosh guards starting and no depth. I foresee lots of turnovers and mugging presses against them. Luck O Da Beav’s!
I can kinda get it. The girls leaving have all been far from home (Australia, Arkansas, Georgia) combine that with covid shutdowns (it’s not like the first year players have been able to experience any campus life or social life this year.) and the one time easy transfer season. It’s going to happen.
Anyone finding MLB brutal to watch? Walk, strikeout, home run…over and over. Then a man put on 2nd in extra innings because we want to pretend we’re a fast sport like hockey?
Huge opportunity for an old school baseball league to spring up and supplant this crap.
Did you miss Ohtani last night? Starting pitcher and batting in the 2 hole! Crushes first pitch of the night 450ft. Then just throwing easy gas. Several fastballs over 100mph. That was fun to watch.
Man on second has no chance of staying after this year. Better get rid of it for playoffs.
It’s not just man on 2nd, but you can’t have specialist pitching matchups anymore, either. Starting pitchers maybe go 5 innings…just brutal.
Goose Gossage was right. Nerds who didn’t play the game have ruined it.
“The game is becoming a freaking joke because of the nerds who are running it. I’ll tell you what has happened, these guys played Rotisserie baseball at Harvard or wherever the f— they went and they thought they figured the f—ing game out. They don’t know s—.”
“A bunch of f—ing nerds running the game. You can’t slide into second base. You can’t take out the f—ing catcher because [Buster] Posey was in the wrong position and they are going to change all the rules. You can’t pitch inside anymore. I’d like to knock some of these f—ers on their ass and see how they would do against pitchers in the old days.”
Preach Goose!
It’s been that way for the past few years. I just follow box scores and sometimes game tracker and I get to do something interesting at the same time.
Yeah. I quit my fantasy league yesterday…been in it a decade. I did look at a few box scores as well. I might keep doing that, but we’ll see. I probably won’t watch an actual game until October.
You could be watching some decent Beavs pitching right now.
t2, Beavs up 2-0
EDIT: hexed ‘um, HBP as I typed.
EDIT,edit: then a WP
Old school dead ball baseball? Bring back the catcher leveling people and the spitball!
I just want spectators in the outfield. Is that so much to ask?
Really don’t have to watch timme flex his lack of muscles tonight. Hoping for a good game.
Baylor looking very good so far.
Preston Jones RBI double gives the beavs a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the 5th
8 hits, 9 LOB for Beavs thru 5 full.
And another weird pitching stat line where everything looks fine except unearned runs.
Armstrong 2 RBI Double followed by a McMahan 2 RBI triple gives the beavs a 9-3 lead b5
Mark Few can’t win the big one. Zags should fire him and bring in a coach who can get it done. Let another school poach him, no contract extension.
I suspect winning in dramatic fashion yesterday made today’s game even more challenging(?).
Guy does just good enough to stick around…it must be tiring for zags fans
Wow. Baylor blew them out
Awesome! Zags win all the games but the big one.
Baylor looked unstoppable since halftime against Villanova. The best team won…
The ‘Zags gagged…
They should have Zigged…
Zags lose on the diamond too – good guys win 11-3.
Surprised your defending Few after telling the old UO AD that the ducks could never win it all. Which is actually kind of dumb since he coach’s Gonzaga and they can’t win it either.
Oops, this was for swammiturd.
Oops again, looks like he got nuked. Lol.
Old man yells at a cloud
Would have been fun to see the Beavs match up against the eventual champions. Or would it…
No it wouldnt. Baylor would have run them off the court like they have done to everyone else.
One Shining Moment was disappointing – one shot of Ethan and one of Tinks – and that’s it?
So they got two shining moments……
That game sucked. What a letdown. Zags will be back again next year. Suggs HS teammate from here in the twin cities is the #1 recruit in the country and is in all likelihood going to Gonzaga. Seven foot beanpole with guard skills.
Think he still goes there if Walker Kessler from UNC transfers there? Few not getting it done in the big games.
By all accounts, yes.
Men’s basketball came in at #20 AP Coaches poll nationally.
And… Jacob Melton is national college baseball player of the week: https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2021/04/oregon-states-jacob-melton-named-collegiate-baseball-national-player-of-the-week.html
This is awesome. I was wondering if we’d make it in with all our computer rankings being so low still.
Seems a little low don’t you think? The tournament draws were a complete failure and they lean heavily on the computers. Seems we should at least be in the low teens, okie state and Loyola are ahead of us. Im convinced we could play anybody outside Baylor and make a game of it.
Yes, but I wasn’t expecting higher because I’m sure they’re still considering full season resume, rather than just the end. The same guys voting are the ones coming up with every possible excuse for why our tournament run wasn’t legitimate.
No shit!
USA Today has a “Way too early” NCAA MBB top 25 for next year, w/only one PAC Tesm on it, UCLA as #1.
The PAC’s strong tournament performance clearly didn’t stick with the author long. And I know these things are meaningless, and just published as entertainment, but I think it is sort of indicative of how narratives play out and frame expectations and rankings.
That stinks. So once again, pac 12 will beat up on each other and if teams aren’t starting ranked, how will they get ranked and stay there if they are splitting weekend games. Need a strong non conference showing.
Nice.
Katz has OSU in his Under Consideration group of teams. If we stay in this area next year, we’re tournament bound again.
https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2021-04-06/way-too-early-power-36-rankings-2021-22-college-basketball-season?amp&__twitter_impression=true
Spring roster is out. No big surprises. All transfers made it and a couple guys enrolled early.
QBs will get a lot of reps. Only three healthy right now. Hopefully see some big leaps in growth as they will get a lot of individual attention.
Only two kickers and two punters in the roster. Ideally you’d have three each.
Flemings bulked up 3 pounds to 144!
Silas Bilden not to be outdone bulked up 2 pounds to 150!
6 wrs under 175 pounds.

Flemings will be pretty slow with all that extra weight.
Clarke not returning certainly hurts the OL depth. Could have started.
Crazy reading all these allegations about DeShaun Watson:
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/31113664/summary-lawsuits-houston-texans-quarterback-deshaun-watson
Sounds like a Harvey Weinstein wannabe.
Sounds like an ideal QB for the Patriots owner…I mean, second to Brady…
“Hey DeShaun, what say we go get a massage after practice Friday?!?”
Sounds like he’s been hanging out with Matt Gaetz.
I think they’re too old for Gaetz.
Canham selects Dukart to lead off today, Casey batting 5th and Claunch back to C.
Need a couple of those guys and/or Melton, Armstrong, or ?? to get hot for the weekend CW
Angry’s boy, Casey, not only ineffective at the plate so far tonight, but allows an inside the park HR when he misses a catch near the foul line and continues on into the clubhouse for an extended few moments. No error charged……..you can’t make this stuff up!
How’s he been in league play?
Overall/Conf:
On base % pretty equal, but:
BA .283/.323
slug .467/.484
And hasn’t taken a clubhouse break or given an inside the park HR in Conf.
Nice. Looks like he’s holding his own.
He’s a K machine with one of the worst OPS of our regulars. Hasn’t hit for power since the first few games of the season.
Ah. So stats lie again…?
Depends on what stats you’re looking at and context.
He strikes out in 37% of his AB’s, highest on the team amongst the regulars. He only has 2 XBH in the last month, and they came in the same game (vs. UW). The comment about “OBP about the same between conf and non-conf” is a negative because, again, his is one of the worst on the team.
Also, he leads the P12 in K’s and has the worst AVG amongst qualifiers.
Gotcha, so he stinks, like I thought.
OH is correct. So am I. It does depend on which stats you look at. Example: Casey is still tied for the most RBI’s on the team.
I was busy trying to fathom his run into the clubhouse when I originally posted. For sure he has been frustratingly inconsistent with a tendency to K at the worst times; he has also worked a couple BB’s at good times and made a couple great throws from LF. He needs to do better, overall avg dropped 12 pts last night…down now to .271.
About that run into the clubhouse, Canham has his back on that. Says once you go through the open clubhouse door the floor is slick and hard to stop when running full speed in baseball shoes, adds that it was fortunate Casey wasn’t injured.
I had thought OSU was close to landing Giles Jackson from Michigan as a transfer, but then last week UW had 2 more WRs leave their program, and now Jackson seems to be pretty high on UW.
OSU has absolutely no recruiting mojo this year. Hard to believe it could all be related to Pitre leaving and Doctor taking over as recruiting director, but his early results have been leaving alot to be desired.
What results? I guess no result is still a result…
Doctor is a “neat deal”-er so it’s no surprise he’s getting those results
2 star diamonds in the rough with offers from Eastern Washington! I’m feeling it…
I can see the headlines now.
“OSU flips a recruit from a top Big Sky school!”
And the fans rejoice.
So Vidlak wasn’t a prized recruit???
Is this one of those instances where I dont recognize sarcasm?
Define prized. He wasn’t highly sought after and OSU didnt even have him on their radar until I started tweeting at them they should take a look at the kid, on advice from former Beav TE Quinn Smith.
And that was only after they struck out repeatedly on their top QB targets. Covid shutdowns helped keep Sam under the radar.
Sam may turn out to be a nice prospect, but it’s not like OSU had competition even after they got his verbal commitment.
sarcasm.
I did not rejoice with this signing. Millen was the guy who had more upside and could reach his ceiling quickly whereas Vidlak is a project. Might get better but not as quickly. But some people think he’s under rated. I don’t. He’s exactly what his offer sheet shows. Would be great fcs player, project at fbs level. Also could have taken both.
I’m with you. But I do like his potential to grow into the role given a couple of years of practice and competing for a starting spot. I actually really like what I saw out of Gulbranson in very limited time last year and am hopeful he can push Gebbia/Nolan for the top spot these next 2 years. He has the best arm of the bunch and just looks the part when he’s on the field.
Media seems to already be smitten with Vidlak after 2 days of practice. That’s always cause for concern because they always seem to fall in live with the underdog rather than fairly evaluate them against the more experienced players.
Gotta give Vidlak time to acclimate for the difference between 3A HS defense vs D1 college defenses. Right now he’s throwing against guys who arent allowed to make contact. Plus it’s the Oregon State defense.
EWU had Riley’s number, so back in the day that WOULD have been exciting.
Baseball is not good tonight.
#19 Oregon loses to Portland also. Both teams coasting before CW weekend.
Lose 5-2
Sloppy, weird game Zags win this one 5-2.
Beavs got to tighten focus this weekend, game times dictated by PAC12 Net, Fri 7pm start, etc.
Defense sucked. Did Casey’s kid stop to take a shit in the clubhouse on the ball he dropped? His dad would have killed a player that did that!
Slick floor prevented timely return to the field, see above.
I think his dad may have something to say about leaving that door open during play.
Sean Miller out at UA. Bad news for conference as PAC-12 is only considered good if UCLA and UA are doing well in hoops.
Sean Miller is a slimy douchebag. Glad to see him gone
Good news for the Beavs in that Miller was a solid recruiter and coach, even if he is super shady.
Plus, UA will be under pressure to make the right hire.
I don’t see this as bad news at all. The PAC 12 proved that they were strong in the Tourney this year and that was without Arizona. We don’t need them and they will replace him with a good coach anyway. I would say getting a corrupt coach out of the PAC 12 is a good thing.
They can easily replace him with a top coach. Coaches will be calling for the job, not the other way around.
Any harsh penalties leveled by the NCAA will be toward the coaches. They’ll all get long show cause penalties. All the people involved are now gone. Program won’t be hit by more than maybe 1 scholarship reduction for a year or two. Basketball programs are never down for long.
Interesting to see who replaces him. There’s no shortage of potential candidates that were former players for the program who have NBA coaching experience.
UA will storm back to relevance even with a decent hire.
Not having to see his smug, punchable face on the court is plus for sure.
I dont see a scenario where Marquez Beason transfers to OSU.
Recently he asked Illinois coaches for a position change from CB to WR and the coaches were happy to help. Sounds like he’s enjoying his relationship with this new Illinois staff.
Angrys source was full of it then. Maybe he went back to that Sidd Finch guy.
Angry was going off a tip that was sent to me by a guy who follows OSU recruiting and has been accurate with other info several times in the past. But in this case, I don’t see Beason making this move. I could be wrong, i just dont see anything to indicate he wants to leave Illinois.
It could have been true at one time, then the new coaching staff impressed him.
Man I can’t believe anyone thought Sidd was legit. Many did, but the first clue should of been his name. Literally the name of an April fools SI story. Cracks me up, that people bought in.
Louisiana lawmakers may try and subpoena LSU Football Coach Ed Orgeron RE allegations of sexual misconduct by players in the program. Orgeron is the highest paid state employee in Louisiana at $6M/year. He apparently testified so far only by letter. Didn’t F.King’s tenure overlap w/Orgeron’s hiring?
They must read AB…

BIG JIM weighs in on “the great running backs in Oregon State history” in a piece for Eggers.
He spends a little time explaining his methodology but I think he’s got 4 and 5 reversed.
He’s got Jefferson ahead of Yvenson Bernard.
While JJ’s ceiling may be higher (probably is) you’ve gotta give Yve credit for having significantly more games and carries. Besides, he talked Riley into going for two to win!
Whadaya think?
https://www.kerryeggers.com/stories/the-whale-spouts-off-on-the-great-running-backs-in-oregon-state-history
Yve always gets shortchanged but he was the only back to end the season with a top 25 ranking twice.
JJ is a coulda been if he was able to stay healthy. Like Nall, very effective but didn’t play enough. Also they didn’t win much. That hurts their legacies.
JJ was a far better talent than Bernard just didn’t play nearly as much. Jefferson had the ability to bust big plays and also make something out of nothing. Bernard was more of a do it all work horse but he was also on a lot more talented team. Everyone wanted to shut down Jefferson but couldn’t. I think his performance in the last civil war seals his legacy.
Hard to compare the different eras because the teams were so different.
Imagine if Nall had lined up at RB for four years on a team as talented as the Simonton/Jackson era. He’d be near the top of the lists, not SJ good but dude was a beast. His teams just sucked shit.
I do like Jim’s metric:
“Whenever I get into discussions of this ilk, I fall back on the Baseline Test: If they all lined up on the baseline (end zone), whom would I pick for the 2021 season?”
Totally depends on if you are talking talent, stats or sentimentality.
Most talented: Best Career in College (Great?)
1) Jackson 1) Kenny
2) JJ 2) Quiz
3) Quiz 3) Bernard (could be a 3a/3b with Jackson)
4) Bernard 4) Jackson
5) Kenny 5) JJ
Like Jackson and Quiz if JJ stuck around the guy would challenge Kenny in the stats department. All three had higher ypc and td/game
Looks like Vidlak had a good day of practice. Mentions of his touch, accuracy and power. Mentioned hitting receivers with bulletts and bombs. Lindgren and Nolan both complimented his work ethic on the field and in the film room.
This guy might end up being the steal of the class.
I think thats just coach speak and media trying to make a story as there isn’t much to write about after the first day of practice. Nonetheless it’s good to hear. There isn’t ever much to take from the coach/player interviews because they’re giving the media what they ask and want to hear. At least the media is allowed in right now so hopefully they will provide information aside from what the coaches want to tell us.
‘That guy sucked, we were really disappointed with his execution and decision making. What a wasted scholarship.’
Of course they are always going to put a poitive spin publicly. With a freshman though, isn’t all they have to say is ‘hey, he’s coming along, we like his progress coming from a small school, blah blah blah etc.’?
I had a really good burrito tonight. Feels like it’s time for a gut bomb.
My bubbling gut says OSU will land the following players for 2022. One possibly on Monday.
RB Damien Martinez
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2022/damien-martinez-270473
OT Roger Carreon
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2022/roger-carreon-269609
Martinez would be the first recruit credited to coach Steward if he comes here. I’m keeping an eye on both guys.
I take back the word “possibly”. My gut is iron clad with the 4/12 prediction. It’s not the beans talking
Great, an OT with a last name phonetically the same as the word for “dead meat.”
Martinez looks like he’s in the JJ mold. Similar size, good vision, strong enough runner to get through tackles at the second level. He doesn’t look very explosive on film, and he doesn’t look like he has P12 breakaway speed.
I dont really know what number is good for Pac12 speed. Saw he ran an 11.10 100m in track recently, which was down from an 11.50 he ran earlier in the season. Going through his feed, i see several coaches touting his work ethic and recent gains in both strength and speed this year from last.
11.1 is decent. Timing can depend on a number of factors, but I would call sub-11 “good PAC12 speed.”
Cutting off .4 is pretty impressive, though. And, of course, he’s still growing.
11.1 is varsity on almost any high school team. Sub 11 is great and anything sub 10.5 is elite. .4 second improvement at that level is huge. Like almost to the point where I wonder if he had shoes on the first time.
Found his athletic.net. his PR was an electronic timed 11.37 which isn’t great. It’s his first year doing track and from his time variations I would say he struggles out of the blocks.
I get the impression that he was fairly new to track. So maybe that explains the time improvement.
I have never understood the fetishism of speed in shorts. I’d rather see how fast someone runs with pads on, bring that to the combine.
Well, watch his film and you can see he has good-not-great HS speed, which won’t translate to good P12 speed unless he continues to improve.
Official visit plans are starting to come together. NCAA is finally allowing those starting in June, after a year plus moratorium.
I’ve got 4 guys so far who I believe will be visiting. Dates are still sketchy.
QB Braden Fowler-Nicolosi(dates undetermined)
OT-Roger Carreon(early Summer)
RB-Damien Martinez(mid June)
LB-Melvin Jordan(dates undetermined)
Have also noticed alot of recent mutual follows between Oregon State staff and Texas A&M transfer DT Josh Rogers.
(The Josh Rogers in the student directory is not this guy, btw)
Could be a DT to keep an eye on over the next week or so.
He had some pretty good offers out of HS(class of 2017) but didnt see the field a ton at A&M, usually was a backup during his time there.

Planting my potatoes today, OOB. Pretty stoked to start up again. They say potatoes can’t grow in clay soil, but they grew fine here last year.
Some new crops this year: eggplant, san marzano tomato, hot peppers, cabbage.
I think the issue with potatoes in clay is the skin gets a bit thicker and harder not that they can’t grow. Fast food and frozen food makers prefer the potatoes grown in sandier Eastern Oregon and Idaho soils for fries.
You should try Cherokee purple tomatoes. They’re an heirloom variety that is to die for. Sweet flavor and no acidic taste at all. I tried them a few years back and now half my tomatoes are the Cherokees. I’ve had really good luck sticking with heirloom varieties, alot less acidity than the newer genetically modified tomatoes. You don’t want to get me started on carrots
What do you think of Brandywines? Last year mine got huge but never ripened.
Brandywines need a longer growing season than the pnw has to offer. I tried them a couple different times and had the same results as you. Maybe grow them in a greenhouse. That tums trick is great! I’ve always used bone meal and eggshells with mixed results. I’m having 10yrds of river bottom garden soil brought in this year. My garden soil is just wore out and every year it’s been getting harder and harder to get good results.
I’ll add that my garden at one time was black clay. Over the years I’ve brought in river sand(really fine silty stuff) to make it workable. The last few years I’ve had to add 2 truckloads of cow/horse manure and all the leaves I can get my hands on to get it to produce. That’s too much work for a hobby garden…
That’s interesting, thanks. I’ll take a look at the skins this year. Didn’t notice anything like that last year.
I don’t have much in the way of clay, always had good luck with Yukon Gold.
You are smart to try new stuff, never know when you’ll uncover a new favorite….especially with your talented cook!
Carrots alot has me convinced to give Cherokee Purple another chance; didn’t have good results a few years back and have been sticking with Willamette’s.
I put 1/2 a Tums in each tomato hole last year and didn’t have even a hint of blossom end rot.
I may have to try that tums trick. I’ve tried to grow big heirloom tomatoes a few times and they always get huge and look beautiful and right before harvest time they rot out. So frustrating.
Calcium issue?
Yes, it’s a calcium issue. I’ve read about people actually spraying milk on their plants like once a week once the fruit sets on and getting good results/no blossom rot. I’m not buying what they’re selling though.
Wonder if some broken up oyster shell mixed in the soil would help?
Jim Wilson weighs in on the “top OSU RBs” conversation, today, through Kerry Eggers site.

Where do you come down on the JJ vs Yve discussion we had here yesterday?
Silver is in the transfer portal.
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2021/04/oregon-state-guard-tariq-silver-heads-to-transfer-portal-second-beavers-player-to-leave-program-this-week.html
Well, crap. I was hoping he would step in and take over for Reichle. He looked good in the minutes he had.
There’s the second player Daschel alluded to. I guess he gets decent information. This sucks, I think Silver should have received a lot more playing time and maybe even replaced Reichele as a starter as the season progressed. Maybe Silver saw the writing on the wall with the transfers coming in?
This is may also be part of Tinkle’s random playing time issues, like Andela getting no minutes against Oklahoma St. Players can talk the party line, but when you get to the D-1 level, there are egos involved.
I don’t think we have anyone coming in that’s a 3. With Reichle gone, Calloo is really the only major 2021 minute guy that makes sense there.
Remains to be seen if this is a big loss or not. Played reasonably well in the minutes he got but he got limited minutes for a reason. Loss of depth for sure.
BUT the big note in the article was the last sentence. Lots of interest from transfer portal players now. If they could land a big fish there, that would be huge. Really could use a front court player to help out Silva and Tucker. Dashawn Davis is absolutely destroying his league this year so may not need another guard. Davis leads all JC players in assists per game at 10 per game.
Is a deal gone? Isnt he front court? And I think Andela didn’t play against ok state due to hand injury. Wasnt it all bandaged for the next game? Wasnt as impactful after that.
Andela*
That sucks. He was a specialist and Tinkle was gaining more and more trust with him. Need those type of players that can come in and hit a couple of shots. Surprised he didn’t play more that last game when they were struggling to score points. It’s unknown how big of a loss it is until we see who is brought in. I think he could have been a starter though if his defense improved.
“Tinkle said. ‘We support his decision to find a school where he can have a major role and wish him all the best.'”
Sounds like he wanted a “major role” and WT didn’t feel the same.
https://tvccsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/davis_dashawn_99ni
That’s a lot of points per game for 6.6 minutes per game.
I like the game where he had 21 assists and 1 turnover. Not sure there are many guys with a A:TO ratio like that.
Beavers baseball team will finish no better than 5th or 6th in conference and will lose 2 of 3 to the ducks this weekend. Meanwhile, Rueck loses another player to the portal as Savannah Samuels is leaving. She and Sasha were close friends and now only 7 scholarship players on roster. Tarik silver leaving is not a significant hit to beavers. It will be his 4th school playng ball to he sounds more like a transfer junkie.
Swammi deleted hos comment? Lol
MBB after a PG from Seattle U who averaged 20+ PPG and shot 87% FT.
Just watched Darrion Trammell’s highlights. Looks to be shifty PG who can score at all levels with some good court vision. We would be absolutely cooked on defense with a backcourt of him and Lucas, but he looks to show a nice effort at least. Would be a nice get considering how badly we need a true PG
Tibesar with a batch of coachspeak:
Tibesar believes that the pieces are in place for the Beavers to develop into a group that can constantly force opposing offenses off the field.
“Looking at where we’re at right now, with the amount of talent and depth, it’s the most that we’ve had since coach Smith and I have been here,” Tibesar said. “So that’s exciting for us. We’ve got some steps to make before we can get there, but that’s certainly our goal.”
https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-veteran-beavers-defense-ready-to-show-what-we-can-do/article_0bcb882d-aa2f-5e15-86c1-38acb259fdfa.html
For the defense to get better the D-line has to be more productive. The LB’s get a bunch of tackles 4-5 yds into 2nd level. Not going to cut it.
Seems like we’re going to be alright at the ends because of the LB depth. DT is a concern.
Since lineman cannot block downfield on a passing situation, maybe the solution is a 7-foot dude who just stands there and blocks the QB’s vision.
Listened to the Colston Loveland (4* TE) segment from the Nemec podcast. Sounded like he’s got an official visit the weekend of 6/18. Same weekend as Martinez. He also made it sound kike he really enjoyed hos recent unofficial visit and he and his mom were digging the small town vibe of Corvallis, which is bigger than the town he’s from but still felt similar to his town.
Still plans to take his other visits but as of now it sounds like OSU is in a pretty good spot with him in terms of fit and location. He does have a Bama offer now, but I didnt get the impression that he would want to be quite that far from home. Also, Boise of course wants him too. Losing Houser to Boise doesnt help our cause. They seem to know each other.
I think we’re going to start seeing the hashtag #Trailblazer22 when the team references our 2022 recruiting class between now and signing day.
Let me be the first to say….
FTD!
I think that might be a little harsh to say to flower delivery employees.
BASEBALL
Feels like this weekend could set the tone for the balance of the season. Weather shouldn’t be much of a factor (some wind) in Eugene, all games on PAC12 starting this evening at 7.
If angry is too busy in the garden to put up a new thread I’ll try to do that a couple hours before first pitch.
And, as BG said FTD
Nemec mentioned “2 big commits” for OSU this week. Guess we’ll see if the gut bomb was more than just gas this time.
I’m sure he reads AB
Jordan commits so I’m guessing the other will be Martinez.
New gut bomb. Friday morning edition.
I believe 4* ILB Melvin Jordan will also be a Beaver commit.
Major selling points are the success of Omar Speights and Avery Roberts in our system.
If true, what a get out of Florida. Thanks for the info.
Jordan commiting now per Nemac
And Jordan is committed
Does anyone have a list of seniors who are returning vs graduating and leaving? This year is very confusing in that regard. Or how about just a list of impact/significant players that are leaving for any reason? Here’s what I know offhand- let me know if I’m missing anyone:
RB: JJ (obviously the biggest hit)
OL: Clarke, Bush. Are we losing any starters?
LB: Taumoelau
CB: N Wright, Dunn
S: Morris
Overall position groups:
QB: Nolan and Gebbia should be improved with a year under their belts and a normal-ish offseason
WR: Should be much improved with Tongue on the team, Harrison fully engaged, and Beason with a year of experience. Plus Bradford.
RB: Will be worse, but could still be good. Baylor is decent and there’s interesting depth and potential behind him.
OL and TE – roughly the same?
DL: Whittley is a huge X-factor. Reichner could help. Without these two, guessing it’s about the same.
LB: Don’t know what to make of Hamilcar leaving after last year, but guessing the same.
CB: Worse. Gotta hope young guys step up
S: Same, since Morris hasn’t contributed in forever.
Overall I see offense being better and maybe a lot better. Defense being the same or worse. Whittley’s status is a huge factor for the success of the 2021 team, assuming we don’t land a impact transfer or two in the near future.
I dont have a list, but we lost Montibon from the OL too, I think. Might want to check me on that
You’re right about Montibon. Here a link from Jan about seniors:
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2021/01/jordan-whittley-nathan-eldridge-andrzej-hughes-murray-among-10-super-seniors-returning-to-oregon-state-football-in-2021.html
Sounds like the two senior LB changed their minds (or were encouraged to change their minds) between then and now.
That transfer RB could be a surprising (for opposing teams) & productive addition. RB may be more solid than we think, but JJ Lisa hurts.
A couple of other guys who played some have also left although not were seniors:
RB Tyler – Transferred to Utah State. But getting Fenwick offset that and would probably prefer Fenwick to Tyler based on his SEC experience and being a bigger back
DE/LB Garcia – Transferred to Fresno State. Didn’t quite live up to the hype of a guy that was previously committed to USC. Losing any front seven depth hurts.
P Lightbourne – Currently in the portal. He has the physical measurable, but inconsistency hurt him and is now looking for his third school.
Others who left but didn’t play much recently if at all include: QB Moore (transferred to Arizona), OT Vanderlaan (transferred to East Carolina), WR Stewart (transferred to Eastern Michigan), DE Dawkins, and CB Hayes (who started as a freshmen and had 44 tackles that year, but hasn’t really gotten on the field for two years).
OT: College Football News with a pretty accurate write-up about Jermar Jefferson. I think #11 is still too low, but I admit I didn’t watch the other backs.
https://collegefootballnews.com/2021/04/nfl-draft-running-back-rankings-2021-from-the-college-perspective
fumble issues really hurt his stock. even if it didn’t result in a turnover, he fumbled in nearly every game last year.
Melvin Jordan Rivals profile.
Might be one of the best offer lists we’ve seen for an OSU commit in quite awhile. Can we keep a florida guy committed through signing day?
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2022/melvin-jordan-236472
Previously committed to Cincy.
He committed to FSU a while back too. Decommit from FSU probably related to Taggart leaving but the Cincy one is interesting. Wonder if there are academic issues. If there aren’t any academic issues, it’ll be tough to hold onto him until Dec. Coaches need to get him to turn into a recruiter. Those guys always stay committed.
Didn’t he decommit when the Cincy DC decided to go to Norte Dame and become their next DC.
Yes.
The FSU decommit may have been related to drama around Norvell, depending on the timing.
The guy definitely isn’t bashful about changing his mind to find the right fit, but that doesn’t mean OSU isn’t it. Staying close to home clearly isn’t a priority, either.
Would love to hear how this one came about. Given his offer sheet I would never expect a guy like this to come to us without a serious connection. That said im very happy about it!
Every time someone mentions how bad the recruiting has been we get a good commit. Keep it up guys! This staff sucks at recruiting!
It worked for basketball, so it has to work for recruiting too right? Got to land a QB in this class. It’ll setup the next battle for the QB spot when Gebbia and Nolan graduate.
Won’t the next battle be Gulbranson and Vidlak? I’m not that smart but it seems we have some great depth there for a few years barring anyone leaving. I mean I’d take a walk-on or something.
It seems we get WR, LB, QB, RBs but where are the impactful D line guys, O line guys and some secondary players?
You want a QB in every class because depth guys usually transfer. The pipeline is never as full as it seems.
QB is a position you never want to stop recruiting. Get the best guys in as possible, winner should be good. Others may transfer but you’re left with a good one. The top schools all do it. Bring in multiple 5 star guys, winner stays, others transfer.
I’m always mystified how JS is unable to sell to top QBs with his track record of development and results.
Hope the team remembers to tackle the ball carrier:

LOL.
https://www.totalprosports.com/2021/04/09/homeless-guy-poses-as-usc-player-for-days-eats-meals-hops-in-jacuzzi-tried-to-field-punts/
That’s fucking awesome.
I thought so as well.
It’s funny that they only figured it out after he tried to field kicks. I wonder how many chances they gave him until someone questioned his legitimacy?
Act like you belong there and things usually work out.
I have a friend who we were tailgating with before an OSU game, but he didnt have a game ticket. So as the rest of us went into Reser for the game, he hopped into line with the players heading for the walkway into Reser, and he ended up spending the game on the sidelines standing with the chain gang. We didnt even know until after the game that he did that, but he had the tv screenshots to prove it. Jist had to walk in like he belonged and nobody even questioned him.
Coworkers wife ended up in the locker room after a game and listened to rileys speech while celebrating the win with the players. The good ol days.
OT: Opening opponent Purdue down to three scholarship RBs after departures…
https://www.hammerandrails.com/2021/4/6/22370381/dajoun-hewitt-purdue-transfer-portal
They still have 2019’s and 2020’s leading rushers and a transfer from UNLV. They’ll be fine, absent camp injuries.
Which always happen….
Not for opponents of the Beavs
Haha…. good point
Obviously a huge series vs Oregon. If they can win the series, it will go a very long ways with the postseason. Oregon has a really high RPI at the moment.
Road wins are valued very high in the RPI calculations. Beavs somehow are suffering their worst losses at home which are compounded in the RPI. The one loss vs Utah dropped them about 10 spots in the RPI. Luckily Gonzaga is playing decently this year.
So a road series win vs a top RPI team could save them in the end if they don’t finish strong.
It’ll be a theme all year but they need to score runs for Abel. And he needs to help by not walking or hitting so many guys.
Thanks, Bill
