    Champ Flemmings transfers.
Feels he was getting inched out of the WR rotation.
He wants to go to a small school.
Looking for a little more playing time.

Have to give the guy props for playing P5 football at his size. Seems like someone that could become a good coach with that mindset. Good luck to him!

    • This is likely good for the program and Champ.

Who will get his reps next season? Hopefully Tongue is working this off season on whatever it is that keeps him off the field? Hands? Understanding of offense?

Local radio thing – while I appreciate KEJO-Corvallis having live and local programming – they seem to run the thing with rubber bands and tin cans. It’s a rare week when they don’t have a problem with equipment for a remote, or some other thingamajig. I get that they are understaffed and appreciate their efforts – but it’s just weird how frequently they have tech issues.

Radio stations are just like newspapers, their operations are funded by advertising. If you want them to do a better job, encourage your favorite local businesses to advertise so they’ll have the cash to upgrade their equipment and on-air talent.

      • Radio stations and newspapers certainly are alike in several respects. For example, when they fail to label opinion in what is presented as news they risk turning off consumers who can think for themselves. Sometimes this alienates a sizable portion of their audience; doesn’t do much good for the advertisers they do have.

    • Yay is an understatement! This is a GREAT move, I’m really looking forward to the broadcasts.

Now, maybe Jon Warren can straighten out the technical issues mentioned above by Dan. When I used to catch the Joe Beav Show frequently, Jon often explained how hard he works and his knowledge of all things technical.

I did, however, enjoy BIG JIM schooling Jon during early season baseball when Jon was doing play by play; JIM did it with so much gentleness, teaching does run in his veins.

PBH – I read your message on the last thread. Glad to hear you are catching some great waves in Nosara. I’ll be going to CR in March for a couple of weeks to get my surfing fix in, but I’ll be a bit further south than Guanacaste.

Take care, and give us another update so we know you didn’t “vaya con dios” yourself Point Break style down there.

      • Shouldnt we have a couple spots open given Vidlak and Champ both left after signing day? Plus we were prepared to add Ott on signing day, so we should have had another spot at that time. Or maybe they were counting on these transfers?

        • I added in Cody Anderson when you mentioned him, which put us at 86, then subtracted Vidlak and Champ.

Obviously it is very fuzzy. Not sure if either of the kickers are actually on scholarship, and I know Lowe came in as a walk-on…

    • Why didn’t OSU put Skelton on scholarship. He wasn’t a great player but he was second string in a position of desperate need. Think the coaches really screwed up here. I would much rather have Skelton on scholarship and have another DT than spending a scholarship on projects or reaches like Ferenzi, Strand or Elu.

  4. Looks like a couple football assistants are sniffing around twins Grayson and Gabriel Murphy who just entered the portal from North Texas.

They’ve played hybrid DE/LB and combined for 26.5 TFLs and 15.5 sacks last season.

  5. Noticed that Jake Cookus and a couple other OSU assistants followed JT Daniels today. And before that we already had quite a few coaches following him, which indicates to me we haven’t been cut out of contention yet.

Could really be huge for the program if they were able to land him. That would really bring balance to the offense and give them some positive momentum heading into next season. I won’t hold my breath but it’s good to see that the staff is at least trying. I’ll gladly take a Daniels for champ swap.

For just $9.95 a month, you can find out!
Or sign up for a annual subscription and get 2 months free of leading edge content. That breaks down to less than 2 cups of coffee per month. You should skip your coffee and find out who the next DT that wont be coming to Corvallis is. We swear we’re not just making this up to sell subs.

  6. Entertaining article on LA Ram’s Cooper Kupp – who played at Eastern Washington – on his approach to the game:

    https://www.si.com/nfl/2022/01/21/cooper-kupp-unique-origin-story-of-unlikely-superstar-daily-cover

“Even in the FCS, Eastern clashed with Pac-12 teams each season. Kupp elevated his NFL prospects against NFL-caliber defenders, whether dominating Oregon State in 2013 (five receptions, 119 yards and two touchdowns in his college debut), Washington in ’14 (8-145-3), Oregon in ’15 (15-246-3) or Washington State in ’16 (12-206-3).”

Geez, the guy had about 3 games worth of productivity against UO. Was that the year their D was one of the worst in the country?

  7. Part of me wants to believe the hype about JT to OSU, but part of me knows if I do I will be disappointed in the end anyway. If we do land him though I will be very optimistic about this year

      • 1
        1

Agree on Dorman over JT. Why can’t we find, recruit and develop a quarterback from high school into a solid player? If someone comes in from high school then sees us each year bringing in a middling (at least from on-the field productivity stand point) upper classman, what HS kid wants to come here and stay here?

        • I’m sympathetic to the desire to bring in and develop a HS recruit at QB, but in this day and age, it doesn’t really matter. QB movement is the norm. Because OSU isn’t a splashy destination for HS recruits, I think we should assume our QB’s will be transfers (like all 3 of our top 3 QB’s in 2021 were).

  8. RE: NFL, think SF can win a third game over the Rams? It will likely feel like a neutral site game w/many 49er fans.

    I’m hoping for a Rams/Bengals super bowl..something different.

So was Joe Burrow a one year wonder at LSU? Where was he before that? On the LSU bench, or did he transfer to LSU?

    • he played 2 years at LSU, and if I recall he was building towards the breakout year, I believe he had a big bowl game prior to the breakout season

      • I think he was also working with Drew Brees/Sean Payton during his off season and everything clicked his second year.

Anybody who can get sacked 9 times in am NFL playoff game and not lose his nerve is pretty good. Derek Anderson got sacked a couple of times by USC and was never the same.

  9. Does OSU have a Junior Day for recruits? I see guys going to Washington and Arizona for big visit weekends. I’m not really a hype person but it sure seems recruits like it.

  10. Has anyone read Daschel’s comments on OLive relating to why we hired another coach for the back end? I can’t open Oiive and won’t buy it.

    • Google “Oregon Live defensive backs” and the article should be the first result. If I open an Oregon live article from a Google search I don’t hit the paywall for some reason. (Somebody else gave this tip on here once the old airplane mode trick stopped working)

    • 2

Basically, DB is the largest defensive position group and they thought Blue needed help with coaching and recruiting due to numbers.

Repeated that defensive scheme will be a hybrid that uses both 4-3 and 3-4.

Negotiations are underway to extend assistants by another year (through end of 2023).

  11. Article in Seattle Times talks about how the extra year of eligibility for NCAA athletes, the lack of a fall season in 2020 and the onset of the transfer portal, have reduced college scholarship opportunities for this year’s class and many of the state’s better football players aren’t getting offers.

NiceBeaver, curious if there’s any good Washington talent lacking offers that could help the Beavers?

  12. Read an article on the KC Chiefs this morning that mentioned OL Mike Remmers. I did not realize he was still playing. The guy has been persistent, on many a team and practice squad. He could end up a superbowl winner this year.

    • Pretty amazing how much you can make without being a big name in the NFL and just staying on rosters. Over his 9 year career hes guaranteed 15 million and total potential earnings of 22 million. For Reference Seumalo has 8.5 million guaranteed and 20 million potential over 6 years as a starter.

Some other impressive beaver bench warmers and starters:
      Quizz: 8 years 8 million.
      Levitre: 9 years, 44 Million
      Anderson: 14 years, 29 million
      Paea: 6 years 14.5 million
      Peko: 5 years, 2 Million
      Hekker: 7 years, 23 million
      Cooks: 8 Years, 72 million
      Poyer: 9 Years, 30 Million
      Mannion: 7 Years, 6 million

      • If you read Panthers or KC blogs during the super bowl I imagine you’d read similar stuff. Good for him though… but clearly doesn’t have the foot speed to play OT against the better pass rushers… then again not many do which is why top OTs get paid.

MBB 19 down at the half to the Quackies. Pathetic play. To make matter worse Williams hit a three-quarter shot to end the first half which will be on all the SC highlights tonight.

The better question is, why are you still watching these clowns? They suck and aren’t going to magically get better.

Baseball starts in a few weeks.

      • Beavs were up 10-8, Ducks soon went on a run to go up double-digits. I turned it off for the first time in a long time. Checked back in right before half and saw Williams shot. Turned it off for good.

        • I watched the PSU game and first half of the Iowa State game. Told me all I needed to know.

Haven’t watched one iota since and don’t plan to. I prefer the elite 8 run last year being my final fond farewell to beaver mens hoops cause it’s not gonna get any better than that. Ever.

Wasted too many years on a losing program. I’m over it.

          Sayonara.

Baseball starts in a few weeks.

I figured we’d finally learn what kind of a coach Tinkle was once all the coaches’ sons were out of the program. It’s not a good look.

  15. 4
    7

sooo dam hard watching this team!!!! what the hell is tinkle doing?! We have a total train wreck shit squad and nothing promising on the horizon. what an embarrassment to our rich history! can’t believe we are letting this jerk run one of the true blue bloods of college basketball into the ground. we expect championship teams you weird sweaty montana asshole!!!

  16. We’ll see if Tinkle gets the Riley “nice guy” leeway. He’s the chair of the NCAA Ethics committee, everyone loves him, etc.

The Elite 8 run is going to at least buy him another year.

Basketball feels like a sport where buyouts matter less because there are legitimately good coaches at the lower levels and you can overcome talent disparities with good coaching more than in football. Maybe I’m wrong here, but it seems like it would be easier to buy our WT than JS.

    • 6
      1

Tinkle is somewhat delusional about his success at OSU. His latest quote after last night’s debacle….”we know our way works”. Eight seasons in, now under .500 again and falling fast for his tenure. GP-2 fell into his lap (I guess he gets partial credit for keeping him) and a two-week magical run last year. I think Craig Robinson got canned for about the same type of record. I’m not sure “Tinkle’s way” works at all, but we should all shut up and be grateful for two tourney appearances!

      • 3
        2

He caught lightning in a bottle last year. That happens sometimes for 1-2 teams every year. With Thompson gone, this team has been exposed. Everything ran through him and Tinkle’s lack of recruiting acumen and coaching ability is on full display now. Several games under .500 now and not done losing yet.

    • Wow. They went almost an entire month without winning a set.

Young team, with only two seniors on the roster. Shout out for being the only OSU team with a player named “Beaver.” Lots of FB prospects named Beavers have come along, but the team has never been able to land one.

    • I wanna see a team built around defensive specialists. They rarely get free rides so you could attract some of the best in the game by building your team around them. Obviously your blocking and striking suffer but it is what it is.

    • 3
      4

Define “well”. Men’s soccer, baseball and wrestling. Women’s basketball in danger of not making the tournament, MBB won’t make the NIT, softball and volleyball below average. No track team to speak of. One gymnast.

      • 3
        4

Someone previously posted that all the sports that anyone care about at OSU are doing well under Barne’s leadership, as an argument to continue to trust that JS having a .340 winning percentage isn’t reason for alarm…it was sarcasm and I think Barnes is now becoming another failing AD at OSU.

Key theme for this sports year at OSU has been imploding programs and stadiums. Not good for old OSU.

        • 8
          1

Smith’s record at OSU is deceiving and doesn’t tell the whole story. He inherited a mess where the coach ahead of him ran the team into the ground then quit halfway through the season. The team has shown improvement especially in overall talent and he took the team to its first bowl game know about 8 years. Now he needs to build on that. Getting Dorman would go a long way in doing that.

  17. WBB supposed to be on PAC12, you seeing it cj? Not coming in for me.
Radio says Mandy is part of the group of alums throwing shirts to the crowd,…….settle down, angry, the shirts were new giveaways, I know what you’re thinking.

    • Was able to finally get video, Mitrovic continues to improve. Brown back to foul trouble after going foul free vs SC.
Next up…..crazy realtor in the desert Friday.

    • Didn’t you call him a tweener or something like that? He did well because he was better than the lesser athletes he was playing against buy wasn’t a p5 talent?

You forgot…..nfl records in a 17 game regular season. So there is that.

If his average yards per game has a better than Jerry Rice? Than kudos to him and you are correct. I’m too lazy too look it up.

And fuck the forty whiners. So glad they lost.

      • Kupp 112, Rice 115. Calvin Johnson. Holds the season record anyways. Kupp holds the record for season including playoffs.

Career average per game is interesting though. Rice 76 Kupp 78.

Dudes a baller. If you really want to see his worth compare his blocking to Rice.

  18. I’ve been an Eastern Washington fan for some years. They once had a good baseball program including camps. CK was undersized and who recruited small towns in Washington? Did anyone note his family tree? Apropos his nerdiness, I read that he put together a growth expectation analysis some years ago.

    • Undersized? He’s 6’2 and might’ve not been his weight he is now but was at least 180 when he played us. Much bigger than alot of our past and current receivers.

  19. After yesterday: “…Kupp who is officially having the best single season of any wide receiver in NFL history. He piled on another 11 catches for 142 yards Sunday, scoring both Los Angeles touchdowns for good measure. In 20 games this season, Kupp has 170 receptions for 2,333 yards and 20 TDs.”

Been noticing alot of unusual Florida State follows with Coach Yray’s account this past week.
And a fan messaged me this morning asking if I know anything about Yray and FSU, so it’s being noticed by more than just me.
I don’t know anything, but where there’s smoke, there’s often a job change happening soon after.

I’ve never loved Tinkle. I’ve always said the big guys never seem to get better under him. In a lot of ways Eubanks sophomore season was better than his junior. As a former post I feel like that should be Tinks strong point.

OLive w/a short non-story about how Nolan will have to compete for starting job, efficient but needs to connect on more deep throws (footwork improvements needed per JS), Gebbia and Gulbranson return from surgery, OSU could use x-fer portal again.

    I wonder if they’ve checked Nolan’s vision?

    • Too bad he was pretty elusive. I would’ve thought OSU would be an attractive place for him with their #1 pac12 rush offense but at least went out of conference.

      • 4
        2

You never like to miss out on talent, but…I do think Martinez is the real deal and may be starting out of the gates. Lowe and Fenwick are serviceable depth.

I want to see us picking up transfer defenders. At almost any position- DL, edge, S, Cb. We need them all.

  23. 4
    5

Would love to be wrong, but I dont believe the Beavs are leaders for Dorman anymore. This post-season period has been almost all negative momentimum for the football program.
The lone positives might “the implosion” and signing Perkins to the staff, but I dont know that you can call it a positive that it took nearly 2 months to find an assistant coach.
Recruiting staff has taken some hits too, but so far no word on how those are being addressed. I anticipate Yray will be gone soon, in addition to Lose leaving in early January.

Predictions for the rest of the offseason:

-Lindgren gets poached for an NFL QB post and we have to scramble to hire a OC
-Reser pulls whatever funding they still give for naming/sponsorship rights. AD decides to rename the stadium after the program’s most successful head coach, Mike Riley
-In a stunning imitation of its namesake, the East side of Riley Stadium collapses and the Beavs are forced to play home games at Corvallis HS until 2025
-Smith resigns in disgust at the state of the program
-Wayne Tinkle named interim head coach

What is going on? Smith has been very quiet since bowl game loss.

Last year I thought OSU’s continuity would be a bonus. I’m not so sure about this year and the effects it could have in the next 3-4 years. I suppose if this class and next are OSU’s “best,” and they hold into players, maybe they’ll be ok, but it certainly seems like backsliding, even after first bowl game in 8 years and stadium remodel underway.

      • Winning… that is the key to getting good coaches, getting good transfers, getting good recruits, and getting good crowds. OSU was a .500 club this last season who had one big win over USC but lost away from home to many times to ignore. And the Jimmy Bowl did us no favors… losing against CSU. Not attractive. Love my Beavs, but let’s be real.

    • I think its more recency bias since there hasn’t been much going on.

Since the staff closed up the class in the first signing period and aren’t super active in the transfer portal, seems pretty clear they are working on the next year’s class now. Could be seen as a head start over the other teams. You’re recruiting account shows a bunch of 23 guys visiting so that’s something.

    • No idea. I talked to one guy earlier who was hopeful for a PWO opportunity but was told today they don’t have any remaining PWO spots.
I’m watching Austin Ratliff, Dom Montiel and Tyree Blake.
I know there are other offers out there but those are just the first that come to mind. I dont track PWOs much

  24. Stinkle and crew lay a large, steaming turd against the quacks. What kind of Faustian deal did he make last year to save his ass with the PAC and NCAA run?

    • I think that’s a solid pwo. If he’s patient and they can hold on to him and develop him he could be in the mix in a couple of years.

      • My confidence on that prediction isnt super high, but i think the fact he’s a good student can help with financial aid temporarily to give him some time to get a scholarship spot eventually.
Has a full scholarahip to EWU and PSU that the Beavs will need to compete with.

Just read that Texas A&M’s top ranked recruiting class is thought to be “worth” about $30M in NIL deals.

If Thibodeaux’s $100k was really the largest Nike NIL deal, they have a lot of work to do to catch up. The Beavs, as we know, are screwed.

    • Sounds like speculative bullshit to me. The problem is the perception it creates and the consequent attractiveness to recruits.

When are Dutch Bros. And Reser going to pony up and level the playing field?!?

“I’m Chance Nolan, starting QB for the Oregon State Beavers. I never like to take a “chance” with spicy, flavorful salsa, that’s why I’m happy to endorse Reser salsas! In 2021, we never lost in Reser stadium, and you can’t lose with Reser salsa!!!”

Coach Yray to FSU was announced by Pete Thammel this morning. He’s was our longest tenured football staff member(Part of GA’s original staff) and also our top recruiting assistant the past few years, after Guinta left.
With Yray and Lose out, 2 of our most active and experienced recruiting staff are gone

    • That didn’t last long. If we couldn’t hold onto him until for a few weeks, no way we would have kept his commitment until signing day next December.

      • Pretty typical pattern for Smith/Lingren QB recruiting. They fall in love with a primary target early and build a strong relationship, but as soon as other teams catch on and start offering, we lose the player and are on to plan B…C….D and finally land a commitment from plan E. But then after signing Plan E, they’ll regret it and go after a transfer.

        • Spot on. It’s like they are too scared to go after someone and might hurt another programs feelings. But isn’t the real problem that the beavs don’t have a “team” dedicated just to recruiting? I know the budget is small and all that but they need some ra ra guys that will pump up the energy and get guys wanting to come to Corvallis. There are players committing to Miami and they don’t even have their coordinators and other staff (just locked up a DC). It’s pretty lame.

    • Silver lining, nemec recognizes the insight that you have in the recruiting world.

Dorman is a normal teenager. The shiny new object is front of him commands his attention. When schools tell him he’s the number one guy, it’s hard to not believe that. It’s been a consistent pattern. Visit and that school says all the right things and is now in the lead. The beavs weren’t even in the running until he came to visit.

Smith and co really have their work cut out for them. If Dorman is still planning to commit in Feb, then beavs really need to get going.

  27. 2

Will be interesting to hear Coach Smith if he speaks today as a sortof signing day recap. I’m interested in his body language. I’m getting vibes of the Riley depression era around the program. (Like when Riley lost his only shots at the Rose Bowl to Chip in back to back seasons and he seemed shell shocked)

    • Maybe the PAC coaching hires, differential success in transfer portal use, and looming NIL discrepancies have taken the edge off his incisors…

    • I don’t think Smith would give up that easily. The offseason lack of buzz has been disappointing though. The only staff member that seems to have any energy going is Steward.

    • Plus there was the Cal Poly OL and Braydon Bruener who committed to PWO spots a couple weeks back. So i would expect to see them announced soon.
Dom Montiel is announcing later today, but I’m thinking his committment choice will leak before then.

So there’s 3(possibly 4) PWO names for today. But outside of that, I dont hear much buzz. Will be curious if Logan Person gets an offer. If he does, he’ll be a Beav too.
Then a kicker/long snapper/punter will likely be added in time.

But that still leaves several available spots to fill, so will be interesting to see what OSU does. I think they’ve missed out on a couple guys they were hoping to land today.

      • Reichle had opportunities to play for AirForce, Utah State and ASU. Pretty good to land him at OSU. Being in state and having the history with his brother already playing basketball here recently had to help.

Smith blew our one shot at a magical season. There was a bit of a lag last year with it getting into place in time to have an impact, but with the NIL stuff in full effect now, it’s going to be harder than ever. It will now require a franchise QB, like a Kellen Moore, who dominates in order to pull it off.

        • The problem with a Kellen Moore type QB is that once it’s obvious that he’s legit a big program can buy him with NIL money, he can transfer and play immediately.

Not saying there aren’t kids out there with the integrity to stay put and honor a commitment, but that’s the reality of the situation.

      • 5
        2

I really dont get the approach. I know there isnt alot of news to share recruiting wise, but why waste an opportunity to get some air time on tv/radio?

Introduce Bray as your DC and the new position coach, Perkins. Talk about your plan for the offseason. And most of all, dont just roll over and show your belly while you allow oregon to take up 100% of the local coverage today.

  31. I’m looking at college football tv ratings. Looks like the problem wasn’t Covid.
“The National Championship rebounded from last year’s low but remained among the least-watched in the CFP/BCS era.”

I can’t find aggregate numbers, but most of the bowl games were down. NIL era isn’t off to a great start, and there’s no going back…

    • My biggest complaint with bowl games is ESPN has them all and shows one game every day for 3 weeks. I miss they days of watching a day of football even if it’s the small bowls. You always had a few exciting finishes or upsets.

My glass half full optimistic hope for what is happening would be a big splash of JT Daniels announcing transfer to OSU after all of the signing day hype is past and Beavs can command a few days apart form Duck honks trying to upstage everything OSU.

JS plays it real low key throughout the signing window and waits to make a splash afterwards is a nice hope. I know it is probably pie in the sky and JS is just kicking a soccer ball with his kids etc.

There seems ot be a tangible spiralling downward for the program since the WSU loss. Bad losses, transfers, major decommits, coaches leaving, zero incoming transfers, PAC12 wide improvements from all other programs.

ASU may be the only program with a worse off-season, but even they are getting big time transfers incoming.

NIL is shifting all the foundations for major sports and it doesn’t count as cheating anymore, but may also be in the shadows so it doesn’t look so heinous. If big time schools can cherry pick and pay guys to transfer to their school, we simply have a new form of collegiate free agency and the have nots will always suffer. The old hope of building a senior laden group to rise up every 5-6 years is now destroyed for those caliber of schools. It will be a very rare group of players that will commit to such a program and not bail for lucrative opportunities by the 4th year.

JS needs to plan for these types of circumstances and seek out the players that will not jump ship. Or OSU needs to find the big donors who will step into the NIL game and float major cash towards the players etc.

    • Counter-narrative which I don’t necessarily believe, but could be plausible: JS and co. see the landscape shifting heavily toward portal recruiting and good HS players becoming more available. They’re playing Moneyball by going after the underappreciated assets with the goal of “outperforming” in HS recruiting, even if they underperform portal shopping.

    • Maybe we ought to start researching and tracking the successes by the academic side of things with OSU. You know, the big research projects, who’s coming in to work on those., etc. Might be more uplifting.

I am so pissed about the lack of emphasis on recruiting! We literally have no expectations any year in any sport. We sign a bunch of spaghetti noodles and see what sticks after 4 years. Never an immediate impact type player and nobody seems to care!

    • This podcast is pretty eye opening. not sure who the co-host is(TJ Matthewson) with Jon Warren is, but he digs into how NIL is affecting this first recruiting cycle and talks about Texas A&M specifically. I knew that school had some insanely rich oil baron boosters, but didn’t realize they were super organized and set up a shell company to funnel around $30M dollars to the players signing in their 2022 class. All legal per NIL, and guess what, Texas A&M has the highest rated recruiting class. Not just the highest rated in the country, but highest rated of all time in the history of recruiting rankings.

And it’s not going to go the other way as other SEC teams and a handful of others around the country will do their best to match A&M rather than hope A&M stops.
But the Beavs have web links to Cameo videos…..so there’s that.

        • Cool, thanks.
I thought it was odd that our local media(Blitz, OLive, NBCSports were all reporting that our day was done and we were only taking 3 PWOs. They must not have thought we had a chance with Montiel. I’m looking forward to seeing him bring a new look to the QB room. Doubt he gets any playing time soon, but scrimmages will be entertaining if they allow him to play his game.

          • 2
            3

If he is the Kupp of qbs, he’ll transfer as soon as other teams find out about him. Disconcerting times, predictable times

JS now has a lifetime appointment to just keep OSU above Cal and WSU in the standings. Zero expectations to ever win big, just like the OSU of old when no one in the university system cared to think about the impact of sports on the school overall.

Narrow vision for faculty to ignore the great impact that happens with successful sports programs on a campus overall and long-term.

          • 3
            1

Well it’s more ESPN/Disney’s fault than OSU’s. They controlled the narrative that continuously pushed pay for play, NIL, and they lionize and continually promote the SEC model. They will kill themselves in the end, but until then, they’ve killed 90% of teams, of which OSU is one.

          • 1
            1

It may not matter how competitive 60 D1 coaches are if they aren’t coaching the right program with the deep pocket boosters who now pay the team salaries.

JS may be a great competitive coch, but he needs to be thinking revolutionary in regards to the changing landscape of college football. As mentioned above by Beav in Ohio, a college football version of MoneyBall that can compensate and compete against the wealthy and highly talented teams is the next step, but how to do it?

          • but how to do it?

We can start by not missing on guys like Kellen Moore and Kupp. How? Hire people who are excellent talent scouts. Jim Gilstrap was one, and OSU went downhill quickly after his death. Riley got all the credit, but JG was the true genius behind those teams. I also like the idea of investing in sport’s psychologist to get the players ready for every game.

Smith’s best idea seems to be going for every 4th down. Not good.

          • I think also we see in NCAA basketball where there is a little more competitive balance because the best players can go pro after their freshmen year. So teams like Purdue or Wisconsin can compete in the NCAA tounament when they’re loaded with junior and seniors who may not be top draft picks, but theyre more mature and play a better team game than freshman laiden blue chip programs. But I’m afraid NIL will mess basketball up now too because players wont go pro early if theyre guaranteed money to stay.

It’s become a contest of which schools have the wealthiest fan base, bottom line.
No amount of money ball is going to compete with that. At least with money ball you can control of players come or go.
In the NCAA, everybody is on a 1 year(or less) deal and it’s free agency every offseason.

          • 7
            1

It’s become a contest of which schools have the wealthiest fan base, bottom line.

How is this different than in the past 40 years? It’s always been about money. Beavs just don’t have a deep pocket alum willing to shell out dollars on athletics. Oregon would be in the same situation if not for one man.

          • Yes and separate the player acquisition activities from coaching. I keep reading coaches say the recruiting part of the job has become untenable. So take it away and give it to specialists. Let coaches focus on player retention and development, not acquisition.

        • Offer wise, Vidlak and Montiel were on pretty equal ground coming out of HS, the exception being that OSU offered Vidlak a full ride.

Vidlak’s other offers: Montana State and Yale.

Montiel’s other offers: Portland State, Eastern Washimgton, Western Oregon, Linfield, Yale

Vidlak also benefitted from the 7on7 camp exposure which helped boost his in state ranking late. As far as I know, Montiel doesnt have a 7on7 team(playing basketball currently)
Also, FWIW, I was told by someone close to his recruitment that OSU said they would have offered a scholarship to Montiel if they did not have Throckmorton already firmly committed. But they only had room for 1 scholarship QB in the 22 class, so he got a PWO.

Both are talented QBs who played low level Oregon HS football and lived in remote areas where they didnt get much exposure for national recruiting.

          • Side by side HS stat comparisons(from both players final years. I’m using Vidlak’s Jr year because Covid killed his senior season):

          • Also, Hidden Valley was the state’s 3A division 2nd place team that year.
Marshfield was the 4A state champion this year. So the competition isnt equal, but the respective division results are nearly the same. But Montiel’s team actually won the whole thing.

    • Did they call him “Dommy Football” with the way he runs around? Highlights I saw seemed to emphasize his mobility. Seems like he’s more athletic than (likely) a low level of competition, but all of that running around may not won’t work in the PAC.

  35. A Smith interview….some questions seem like they could have been inspired by comments here so it’s likely worth a read even if OLive:

    https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2022/02/jack-colletto-future-betting-on-college-sports-oregon-state-football-investment-q-and-a-with-beaver-coach-jonathan-smith.html?outputType=amp

Kind of disappointing that Smith thinks Musgrave needs more targets (didn’t he have trouble catching the ball?!?) and they didn’t play too many receivers.

Also talks generally about liking who is coming back and not needing much from the portal… you just maybe a pass rusher, OLine, and RB….

    • Well, they are playing like shit against the Utes so far tonight, so I guess it doesn’t matter to them. It’s odd though Canzano is letting Tinkle off way too easily.

  36. 1
    2

For anyone wanting to read the paywall O-Live articles, there’s a free app you can download that gives you access to everything. I believe it’s called the “Beavers FB” app.

I’ve had it for a couple months now, I wanted to share as I’ve seen some comments about not being able to read certain articles.

  37. I love how people are complaining about our class this year. We are 6th out of 12 in the PAC-12. Does no one remember the days of 11 or 12th place? Sound like spoiled children. I understand how Duck fans got to be the way they are now.

    • Are people complaining about this last class? All I see is people hand wringing about potentially losing Dorman (would be our biggest blue chip since Hodgins) and legitimate worries about QB and Line talent.

      • I guess my point is, if we are worried about missing transfers at two positions, we have made a lot of progress since the Riley days. I think Gebbia is pretty solid, did he leave or something? Are Gulbrason, Thockmorton terrible? Is Quincy Wright terrible? All teams have weaknesses. Everyone knows that we would have won a lot more games this season with better coaching decisions. The talent should be upgraded next year. This doesn’t feel like a step back, yet most are acting like it is a step back.

          • Maybe I am over optimistic but I think we have three impact freshman on Defense coming in. Honestly it wouldn’t have taken much with how bad our line was. I see Donaldson, Wright, and Hickle improving our defense out the gate. I think they will better than any “healthy” player at LB, DE, and DT last year. Along with the return of injured players like Julian. We are in better shape than years past, IMO.

          • I hope you’re right. I’m not sure its often FR can impact the game at those positions, but it certainly happens at others, including even QB. Kids got to camps, train year round, watch film, they come in more prepared.

I know Angry thought Donaldson had an opportunity to be an impact player almost immediately.

          • MMD looks good, for sure. Freshmen are just a crap shoot. It’s a major life adjustment and a major football adjustment.

I think I read MMD is enrolling early, though, so that should give him a leg up all around. Plus he played in probably the top HS league in the country, so he’ll have less of a competition step up.

      • I’m worried about the defense. Nothing about last year’s squad tells me we shouldn’t be looking for upgrades at most positions and we’ve pulled in nothing. DT as always, but also EDGE, S and CB.

      • Sorry 7th lol… that’s still better than 11 or 12, no? You also realize that we haven’t had a top 50 class since 2013. This is a big improvement and we were close to being in the top 50.

Btw, 247 has us at 6th.

    Two weeks to baseball!

Ranked in every preseason poll now. Tough non conference schedule.

UC Irvine, long beach state, Gonzaga, Xavier either ranked or getting some votes in the preseason polls.

Saw one of the baseball sites is ranking Forrester as the top 1B in the Pac12.
I’m looking forward to what will eventually be the lineup we settle on.
Thinking it will be something like:
      1. Bazzana(2B)
      2. Dernedee(3B)
      3. Meckler(SS)
      4. Forrester(1B)
      5. Melton(RF)
      6. Logan(C)
      7. Boyd(LF)
      8. Dukart(3B)
      9. Reed(CF)

      • 1
        1

Based on everything I’ve see and heard it’s likely to be this,

Just who will be starting, not the batting order.

        DH – Bazzanna
        C – Logan
        1B – Forrester
        2B – Dernedde
        3B – Gretler
        SS – Jake Dukart
        LF – Meckler
        CF – Boyd
        RF – Melton

From Canham comments – Wheeler and Trosky are guys who will be pushing for time early. Fuchs will also be in the mix.

No word on Reed. I don’t think he played fall ball as he was still hurt.

That Canzano column sounded like it was dictated by Tinkle. They’ve had a ton of roster turnover in the last three years. It’s like a train station. So I guess there is hope for next year if the turnover continues.

    • That was my thought too. Wouldn’t be surprised if Tinkle asked him to create some bulletin board material to be used as motivation.

That … did not turn out as intended.

        • 12

Is there such thing as too negative at this point. This team is on par with Jay John’s worst season. Maybe even worse than that.
          Inconceivable!

    • 4
      1

I thought it was borderline bizarre how Canzano didn’t want to adhere any blame to Tinkle. There was the obligatory “he’s the coach”, but that’s a weak cop-out. Big Tink’s must be a Riley-esque nice guy to the media. Wish there was an insider who knew what was going on with the program. Given last year’s success, this debacle compounds the WTF factor around college hoops. Won’t matter for long as it looks like a quick fade back into irrelevancy.

  40. 7
    4

If Tinkle is blaming the high roster turnover, he has only himself to blame. He is the fool who brings in guys that fill obvious roles but never paly them correctly in the rotation etc. His favoritism towards the sons has caught up with him.

  41. 1

Last Beaver hoops squad to only win three games was 1918 – but they only lost 13.

They were credited with “four wins” in an Eddie Payne season due to NCAA penalties.

  42. Cal picks up a verbal commitment from 2023 Safety RJ Jones. If they manage to also land Dorman, those are 2 really big hits towards OSU’s efforts to make 2023 their “best class ever”

      • 2
        1

Seems like it’s going to be the last team to visit with him that will win the race. I believe April 1 is when Juniors can start taking official visits. I’d bet he doesn’t decide in March and takes all of his official visits.

    • 5
      2

Meltdown at the end by the team and coach! They can’t shoot the three and struggle to score because of that. They always had at least one or two shooters that could open up the middle. Not this year. Aleah not coming back has been very detrimental. Passing is not crisp and is causing lazy turnovers. The loss of the two assistants has obviously disrupted the whole vibe of this team. This does not look like a normal Rueck team.

      • 2
        1

Can Jones redshirt still? Could be a plus that she’s out this year if she can stick around an extra year. Lots of talent arriving this offseason. Roster should be stacked next couple of years unless we get hammered by outgoing transfers again

  43. 5
    2

I watched Dom Montiel’s highlight reel he posted of the semi and final games.

He has the prototype size for a QB. He is more quick than fast. For his size, he moves well. He is a gamer. I like that he also plays basketball. Well rounded athlete.

But the one big thing that holds him back is the arm strength. For a guy his size, he needs to be driving the ball down the field on a rope. His ball doesn’t have the power behind it. That’s the biggest reason why he didn’t get any d1 offers. Fall camp is where we’ll see if he’s a diamond in the rough or in over his head when he matches up against experienced college players.

He is a perfect PWO candidate. Exceptional high school career but doesn’t have all the physical traits yet. If he builds up arm strength, he’ll earn himself a scholarship.

    • 6
      1

He’s 116-126 over 8 seasons and followed up a historic season with likely the worst season in the history of the school. If the AD can’t figure it out I don’t have the energy to complain. The program has only broken even like once in 20 years. Just shut it down.

    • Might as well start scouting the 3A/4A state of Oregon ranks for the top QB at those levels, to get familiar with the QB Smith/Lindgren are most likely to land in 2023.

      • The inability of two respected offensive minds to recruit a top tier quarterback is pathetic.

Has Lindgren brought anybody decent to our team?

      • Nicebeaver, did OSU just stop recruiting Dorman once other programs show interest? Or, was this a mutual parting of ways per say?

Are we even trying with Dorman at this point? Fucking Beavs…

        • I dont think we stopped. I think Dorman was just wooed more by Cal and Arizona. So the Beavs suddenly were knocked down a few pegs in his preferences so OSU is onto the next plan.
There’s another QB from Colorado they’ve been interested in, Ty Dieffenbach, but he also knows OSU liked Dorman better, so I’m sure he’s not exactly thrilled with OSU keeping him in the back burner.

There are a few new names Lindgren has followed recently, so I could see us offering one or more of them in the coming weeks.
          CJ Tiller
          Ryan Staub
          Jaxson Potter
          Dieter Barr

          • Aa always, Thanks for the info.

We will see this on blitz and or oregonlive tomorrow.

Nemec and Machado, come get your recruiting scoop!

    • It doesn’t matter as much as would it have in the past. Until we start pulling 5-stars (lol), all our QB’s will be transfers, because there’s a huge number of QB’s transferring every year for playing time.

If we strike out on a transfer QB, too, that would be rough, but remember, incoming players see an incumbent al-conference QB and two guys with starting experience on the roster already. That’s not as easy a sell as somewhere like Arizona.

For that matter, Dorman could just as easily transfer to OSU after getting disillusioned with his original destination.

  44. Beavs offered 2024 Edge, Elijah Rushing today.
He’s the top rated player at his position and rated #21 overall in the 2024 class. Oregon has been on him for awhile and they just signed his older brother, Cruz, to a PWO spot in the 2022 class and are treating him like a rock star. What’s odd to me is Cruz is rated as a 3* prospect desoite having zero offers. Not saying he isn’t worthy of 3 stars, but how does the brother of one of 2024’s top players not have a single offer but get that rating? Kudos to oregon for knowing how to recruit talent though. Nobody else went that route.
    I guess what I’m saying is…we don’t have a shot.

I just wanted to speak my mind regarding Beavers basketball for which I have been a steadfast fan for well over a decade. This year is the first year I have missed several games and just not watched them at all. Maybe it’s because they stink, or maybe it’s because I am the thick of having 3 kids and time with them is more valuable then watching the Beavs lose by 20. This season has been tough, and I feel a lot of it has been due to some tough losses when things started gelling. I feel there were several games that we dropped that were close. I remember the 5-27 season and I still watched all of those games.

The biggest thing that stands off the page to me is that this team has it’s weaknesses, but seems to refuse to embrace it’s strengths. This team has showed multiple times it can mask it’s lack of outside shooting with good interior passing and letting their athletic guards get into the paint and score in the paint efficiently. They have shown spurts of good defense. They have shown me all they makings of a team that can compete with the best in the conference. But because of a few bad breaks, they have sunk. The 5-27 team was 5-27 not because of lack of effort. They were short on talent and ravaged by injuries and defections. This team is not. Yeah, they could use another perimeter shooter or two. But great coaches recognize and adapt their playstyle to what they have.

This year, to me, has been the biggest indictment on Tinkle’s tenure. I have heard from a reliable source that Tinkle is not the easiest coach to play for. But last year looked like he had finally figured out to be more of a player’s coach. Well… This year has certainly wrecked that narrative. I get it’s difficult when you have so many new additions. But so far his best years were due to a. GPII and b. a good stable of senior leadership in Reichle and Thompson. Tinkle seems like a genuine person who cares about more than basketball and for that I applaud him. Tinkle did some great things with the basketball program and brought them out of a 26 year purgatory and took them to heights they hadn’t seen in a long time. Let’s thank him and move on while the momentum is there.

Players shouldn’t be giving up on their coaches. To me, that’s unacceptable, and I hope the AD recognizes that. Coaches should be constantly embracing players and elevating their skill set. There is still a lot of basketball to be played. Those games SHOULD be Tinkle’s last chance to try and bring something together. If he can finish strong, I think you could make a case for another year. If not, let’s move on. I’d rather see a 3-17 team that is giving maximum effort than a 3-17 team that is wallowing in their own pity.

    • I would also like to point out that Glenn Taylor Jr. playing 39 minutes was Tinkle’s best move of the season, since it’s probably unlikely he gets fired after this season, it’s crucial he convinces guys like Taylor Jr. to stick around after this season.

  46. Wilner is reporting the beavs are losers in the transfer portal season so far. Mostly because they didn’t have anyone transfer in. He reports that the Beavs are over the scholarship limit.

    • Eggers seems to be a busy guy, always nice when he finds time for the Beavs. He seems to maintain close connections.

      This caught my eye:
“…We’re doing some stuff a little differently on the base paths that will allow us to increase our stolen bases, force more opponents’ wild pitches and help us take extra bases.”

Not the first time mention has been made about what seems a fresh emphasis on baserunning.

      • Yes agree. The program is in good shape. MC has done a good job retooling. He’s only 37 and on track to turn page on Casey’s success.

  47. Saw state of Oregon is dropping the indoor mask mandate by the end of March. Wonder how that will square with the recent OSU decision to require vaccination status be “current” to attend OSU sporting events this Spring. Current, meaning vaccinated and boosted.
I’m currently only single shot vaccinated and wasnt really interested in getting boosted after my negative experience with the first round. Now maybe there’s hope of attending a baseball game at Goss if the school removes some restrictions.

  48. 5
    1

A very unscientific count of the transfer portal for each pac12 school. No idea who is a scholarship player or walk on. Not sure the transfer portal on 247 lists every player either.

    Transfer outs
    USC – 22
    Colorado – 22
    WSU – 22
    Arizona – 19
    UW – 14
    UCLA – 14
    Oregon – 13
    Cal – 8
    Stanford – 8
    Utah – 7
    OSU – 5

It’s just math why the Beavs can’t pick up a transfer. The free COVID year really hurt the Beavs ability to use the transfer portal this year. Spring ball should cull a few more guys. Probably on the oline and the LB spots. If the defense moves toward a 4-3, LB playing time could get squeezed.

Some silver lining in that they will probably be able to take a full class next year while other teams won’t because they took in so many transfers this year.

    • JS and Bray have both publicly said they aren’t abandoning the 3-4, just mixing in more 4-3 where warranted. Maybe it’s posturing to keep certain personnel in the mix, but I doubt it.

    • 2
      1

LB will actually have more playing time most likely. We have a bunch of EDGE guys that will move to DE in the 4-3. In a 3-4 there’s really only 2 true linebackers on the field. 4-3 you have 3 true line backers. I think we have already seen some of the squeeze on the line with Anderson and Skelton leaving.

  49. Blazers fire sale happening. I’m not sure what’s worse right now, the blazers or Beavs men’s basketball. Maybe they should sell the blazers and the beavers close it down for the rest of the season. What a mess…..poor, management and coaching. Ralph is rolling over in his grave right now and so is Paul.

    • No offense but Blazers are a “feel good” team if they make it through the first round. Their last trip to Finals is like OSU’s Fiesta Bowl and #4(?) final ranking. Don’t wait for it to come around anytime soon.

Paul Allen (is that the Paul) presided over many poor decisions, so if he rolled over recently, he’s probably done a 360…

It’s sometimes amazing people as rich as Allen, Knight, and whoever owns the Jets, don’t just accidentally win a championship…

        • Blazers are worse. Ncaa can turnover a roster fast. NBA is stuck with bad contracts and a salary cap. Blazers are shedding all the payroll they can and going into tank mode. Hoping to get into the lottery. If they don’t get a high pick, Lillard may have to go too.

      • I think the Rams are the safe bet. But Burrow is very composed, and if the OLine can keep him upright, the Bengals can win.

I think if Cincy needs to, just go ahead and hold once in a while to protect Burrow, have the RB help out, play the long game, and maybe Stafford gifts a couple INTs.

Nice to see new teams/players in the game.

  50. Looks like the stock market dip might be over. Anyone buy anything good? I added a ton of weed stocks (MJ ETF). So cheap, and they’re actually the most profitable in their history. Added some ABNB, NVDA, OPEN, and Coinbase, too, which seems cheap.

      • Well that correction is what just happened. It’s not like rate hikes are unknown. The market priced in 4 hikes, and we likely only see 2 before the FED reverses.

          • Not really. Used cars made up 4.5% of the 7% inflation. So if you have a car inflation is 2.5%. And that’s declining as supply normalizes.

          • It doesn’t appear that the car supply chain is normalizing for quite some time. Ford formally announced it was cutting production at 8 plants because of a chip shortage. Intel even said that their $100 billion chip plant in Ohio won’t start production until at least 2025.

A Fed reversal would signal to investors holding T-bills that the Fed is not willing to fight inflation, and that bond yields would be nullified by a significant devaluation of the currency. You would then see institutions selling large quantities of T-bills because they don’t have faith that the 2% inflation goal over 10 years will be met. No T-bill buyers = Fed buying more T-bills = feedback loop inflation, unless Congress drastically cuts spending and raises taxes (which won’t happen)

          • I didn’t see any mention of monthly vs. yearly. Inflation tends to be reported in yearly terms because that’s the Fed’s nominal target and monthly inflation data is a really small sample size.

      • Historically the market has done well when rates increase. Poorly when rates increases are announced but well during the actual increase. Conventional wisdom says the rate increases are priced in and only if the fed announces plans to accelerate the pace would that spark a market correction. Of course who knows… nobody.

    • I added CLVR and GRWG but jumped in just a little to early. Pick up some PLUG too… but again just a wee bit early. Should make some bank off these going forward.

  51. Beavs hired a defensive assistant/QC coach, Brian Michalowski. Would replace the vacancy left by Tevita Lose.
Looks like he’s bounced around quite a bit, but mostly with good programs. Most recently was OLB coach at Colorado and then was a QC/OLB assistant at UGA a couple years back.
Seems like a pretty good hire on paper, considering he has experience and has on field coaching experience.
I follower of the Beavrecruiting account dropped his name to me about a month ago. We were thinking he might end up being the replacement for Bray, but Perkins ended up taking that on field coaching spot instead.

Quack WBB just beat Wazzu by 53 points? WTF? Beavs lost by 7 to Wazzu? Also, Beavs lost by 20 some to Stanford today. Got blown out in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Unfortunately, Rueck’s tourney streak is in serious jeopardy. Rough period for Beavs hoops in total this season.

    • 10
      1

Rueck has no excuse. The talent level on the women’s team is enough to get to the tourney. Even with Jones out, there are still 4 players who were 5 star recruits.

      • I agree they have quite a bit of highly rated talent and should probably be doing better. Is most of the talent at the guard and small forward position, relatively low in experience, and even less experience at the 4 and 5?

It seems like minimizing turnovers is more important than ever (Rueck’s weakness), and Rueck may need to play a guard-based game for this season at least? TvO seems productive and willing to take the shots. Can they run things through her and then open things up for the bigs?

      • I like Rueck a lot but lately have been surprised how often he mentions the “brutal” stretch that has been scheduled. Not so sure he has a valid point though.

The Ariz trip followed by Stanford and then quack x 2 followed by Stanford actually didn’t need to be that way. Yesterday’s game vs Stanford could pretty easily been put off a week. Extra time to prep for quack would have been nice, but he’d still have short prep for Stanford.

I think he is looking ahead to next year when this group has been together longer. Still, I don’t count him out of the tourney yet; this weekend will show a lot. Any slight advantage to having the game in Eugene up against the Super Bowl? May limit the home crowd for quack?

        • “Any slight advantage to having the game in Eugene up against the Super Bowl? May limit the home crowd for quack?”

          No.

UO will be highly motivated after their blowout of WSU and looking to do the same to OSU. OSU WBB better come in with an AngryBeav mindset.

MBB just helped Cal end their 10 game losing streak. Lucas missed a three that could have won it and then Calloo missed a wide-open put back off the miss that would have at least sent it to OT. Alitishe went 1-5 at the foul line down the stretch. Beavs lose 63-61.

  55. No point guard or floor leader. Help is on the way and if they can land Olivia Olson in 2024, watch out. They appear to be 1-2 years away so hang tight.

  56. Speaking of shit shows…you Blazers fans may enjoy this. And/or be insulted by it:

The Los Angeles Lakers may have hit rock bottom in what has been widely regarded as their worst loss in a trying season.

Just hours before Thursday’s 3 p.m. ET trade deadline, the Lakers sleepwalked through a 107-105 loss Wednesday night to a depleted version of the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Blazers traded CJ McCollum to the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday for Josh Hart, Tomas Satoransky, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Didi Louzada, a 2022 protected first-round pick and two second-round picks. None of the newcomers dressed for the Blazers, and they also were missing Damian Lillard. The six-time All-Star has not played since Dec. 31 because of an abdominal issue that required surgery.

Former Lakers great James Worthy didn’t hold back in his criticism of the Lakers afterward.

“This is the lowest point of just about any season I’ve seen as a Laker over the years,” Worthy said on Spectrum SportsNet. “I don’t have any words for it because we’ve used all our words.”

….And then against Portland, a team of professional players but it was almost like they were playing against local YMCA pickup group of guys,” Worthy said. “And I think it just goes to show you how deeply mentally disconnected and the inability to fire your brain up for game that you know you should win…”

(LeBron) James took responsibility for the team’s 21 turnovers, which led to 28 Portland points and were particularly damaging down the stretch.

Have to say, its enjoyable to see a superstar free agent team fall to a bunch of guys playing for their jobs.

      • I hate the Lakers, but I would love for a “mistake” signing to net my team a championship 1 out of 3 years, even if the other 2 years were average to below avearge.
        That’s a neat deal

      • 1
        3

LeBron has been playing great, he has seen little drop off which is crazy considering his 19 years in the league and the amount of playoff games he’s played in. Lakers mistake was listening to him for personnel.

Because if his defender breathes on him it’s a foul.

          He’s overrated. And marshmallow soft.

Jordan would school him. Barkley would’ve put the hurt on him.

Rodman would’ve done to him 10 times worse than anything Draymond ever did.

I would say that’s more of a product of playing in today’s NBA and his ability to adapt to this style of play more than anything.
The guy had Karl Malone’s build while maintaining Jordan’s athleticsim for most of his career(maybe not anymore as he’s getting old) I dont doubt he would have adapted to the 80’s/90’s style just fine.

“The initial word on Daniels was that he’d most likely land at a Group of Five program with a clean opportunity to start and put up big numbers. You can’t blame Daniels, who hasn’t played a full season since 2018, for wanting the chance to get on the field and play.” WE WILL TAKE HIM!

Former 5 star WR transfering from USC “One thing to watch with McCoy is Daniels’ status. The two Mater Dei High School products were teammates dating back to junior high, and there’s a chance, depending on where Daniels ends up, that McCoy could choose to follow his former QB.” HE CAN COME TOO!

Same article also mentioned the twins from North Texas saying UCLA and Oregon State are trying to get them enrolled before Spring semester starts but they don’t want to rush their decision. We must have spots still if we are in consideration.

    • Thinking about it now, the scholarship limit isn’t that much of an issue. The team can take anyone but they would be non scholarship players at first. When Trey Lowe transferred in, he was a walk on before getting put on scholarship last year. If there’s no scholarships, they’d only be non scholarship players until winter quarter.

      • This. They can put guys on academic aid while they’re considered walkons. Just have to limit their access to certain team funtions and perks. But it’s a way to get them in early.

McCoy is a huge gamble though. Has flipped his commitment multiple times and was also arrested last year on some domestic violence assault charge. Not sure what has happened with that though.

Smith has shown a willingness to take on guys with question marks in their past though(Quintariano and Brewer)
But those 2 guys had their issues as minors, McCoy is an adult.

  60. Until Rueck gets a point guard, this team will struggle. His substitution patterns make no sense either. Codding played PG for most of the game while Adams didn’t see the floor and neither did the Mitrovic. He left brown in the game way too long after getting her third PF and Talia on the bench for much of the 1st quarter and crunch time in the 4th. Add to that another technical that extended ducks lead from 6 to 11 points, and OSU was playing from behind for much of the game. 15 give aways to only 5 for the ducks and that was the difference in the outcome.

  61. Baseball single game tickets went on sale this morning, although when I view available tickets, I only see the right field bleachers and the Banners standing room only tickets available.

Its astonishing how much hate Hekker gets. He’s the second best punter of all time, only second to Ray Guy (Who is now a Hall of Famer). And we wonder why no athletes want to go to OSU. Part of it, is our crappy fans. Sorry someone had to say it. It just gets old after awhile.

          • He was pretty deliberate (slow?) in his early kicking…

But yeah, LV bowl was pretty damn windy…seems like they should have instructed him to try snd kick low…

          • I understand where you are coming from. However, Loecher has punted 46 times compared to Hekker’s 221. Hard to compare the two on consistency until Loecher has more attempts. Don’t forget Hekker’s Sun Bowl MVP, he may of lost the LV bowl but literally won the Sun Bowl for us. When you punt as much as he had to because of our pathetic offences, its hard not to have a bad game every once in a while.

          • He really didn’t lose that game. It was crazy windy and the coaches complete lack of basic weather physics were the problem. If you kick a low density object into heavy wind it will probably fly in the direction of the wind. A football only has so much momentum. They should have atleast told him to punt it really low like a squib kick.

          • Sam Palescu tends to get forgotten in the punter conversations since he only played for two years, but he was pretty damn good. Made all P-10 his senior year. Stayed a few years in the NFL, but could not quite stick with a team.

          • More punter trivia: during Hekker’s time here, we had two future Ray Guy semi-finalists and NFL punters on the roster at the same time before Ryan Allen transferred to La Tech. Allen ended up as an All-American and was actually the better college punter (as well as punting in more Super Bowls than Hekker), but Hekker will end up in the NFL record books and Allen likely won’t.

  64. Adley listed as a consensus top MLB prospect. Pretty much every site lists him and two others as 1a, 1b and 1c.

Too bad he’s in a career killing org like the orioles.

  65. Looks like the Beavs have added a new staff position dedicated to scouting recruits. There is a new Coach M Harson showing up as the person in that role. No bio on the OSU staff website yet though. It’s a little outdated and still shows Yray on staff.
I’m assuming the existing recruiting staff all got moved up a notch when Yray left, which opened a new spot for the scouting assistant.

    https://twitter.com/BeavRecruiting/status/1493643852439191555?t=uFYbgEa89j_Hrrn59uQI4g&s=19

    • Gotta love Beaver fans. Instead of welcoming the new staff member, they’re quick to point out he spelled recruiting as “recuriting” in his twitter bio, with a little snark on the side

    • I’m deleting the tweet. The account looks like it could possibly be a troll account. Somebody pointed out the pic looked a little like Brian Lindgren, plus this guy isn’t followed by any of our current staff. so possibly a false alarm…

      • It is interesting to see that this troll account in 1 morning has generated more social media interaction than the entire actual Oregon State football social media presence has in the past month. Maybe OSU should take notice?

        • I followed him about an hour ago and thought the same thing. Lots of quick hits. We should hire an intern to run the social media accounts behind the scenes and push it more. Smith saw his dad Peterson not really use it and be successful but times have a changed.

    • Feeling like he’ll go with Arizona. But who knows if that will last through signing day. He’ll get better offers as time goes by

      • Arizona is really pissing me off on the recruiting trail. Bill has said the coed factor but every school has plenty of hot college girls and if that’s why wouldn’t usc, ucla, cal, Stanford, asu be better spots with better teams?

It seemed like smith was maybe finally getting that big time qb that would help propel this team over the top only to let it slip away. Life of a beaver.

        • I’m only half serious. It’s not that big of a factor but some guys do just want to party.

I’ve said before, the beavs weren’t in the running early on until he took a visit. Seems like the same cycle with Arizona. The shine of the visits have worn off and hopefully the beavs have a really good pitch to convince him.

Or maybe Darrell Garretson is bad mouthing OSU. He’s on staff at Arizona.

Get ready to get your heart broken!!

A Dorman quote from an AZ blog,
“I think the two biggest things for me are going to be relationship and fit,” he said. “Obviously, you want to go a place where you wake up every morning and you love who you’re with and who you’re around and where you’re at. That’s gonna be a huge thing. Then fit. Offensively, I’m not gonna go to a place that’s gonna run the ball every single time. Like Navy’s offense, for example.

“I wanna go into a pro-style offense that’s going to be able to develop me into the next level. Then the area where the school is at. I’m not a big city kind of guy, so I think a smaller college town campus is where I’ll feel at home.”

      • 2
        1

That doesn’t give me any reason for me to think my heart will be broken. OSU is a small town school and the offense is pro style. They ran the ball more last season because that was the teams strength and had a 3rd string QB starting. The coaches have said tons of times that they want to be balanced. If I were Dorman I would be thinking that OSU would be a great fit and that I could help make the offense balanced and more dangerous. He would be able to drop back behind one of the best offensive lines in the nation.

        • There’s a reason Lindgren started following several new 2023 QB recruits in the past 2 weeks, but doesn’t follow Dorman.
I think that speaks louder than anything, and it’s not a sign that we’re taking 2 QBs in this class.

        • First of all, one shouldn’t get heart set or broken on a commitment or not…but…OSU would clearly throw the ball more, especially downfield, if the QB is better at it than Nolan and the RB rotation has less talent than Jefferson/Baylor and/or that talent is young (Martinez).

Also, if as a recruit you don’t think you can beat out Nolan et al and show the coaches you can effectively push the ball downfield, than you probably ought to go somewhere else(?).

          • Less talent? Lowe, Fenwick, Newell, Collins I believe might’ve all been rated higher than Martinez but I guess that’s the old fan mentality that the next things always better.

  66. So Smith and his family is on Maui. My friends took him and his family surfing yesterday and is coming into my restaurant today. Hoping I get a chance to talk with him but don’t want to be intrusive.

Credit thought for Laika’s projects, some very nice work there.

      1

The reason I say “for what it’s worth” is because Bahns works for 247/CBS, who also happen to be carrying the live commitment announcement, which he also promotes in the tweet. Doesn’t help viewership if they say he’s going to a specific school at this point.

Who is excited for MBB’s 20th loss of the season? It was a 30-30 tie and then CU went on a 14-2 run before the half. I think the Beavs were 0-12 from three-point land in the first half.

    • 2
      1

0-12? It likely going to be challenging to stay a perfect 0% from three, they might make one or two. It’s hard to stay that cold for 4 quarters and they may heat up a bit…

But hey, Johnny Hekker is a super bowl champion, and Mike Remmers is a millionaire so keep the faith!

    • Last I checked Oregon State is 294th for 3PT percentage and in the 220 range for 3 PT defense. It’s definitely the biggest factor in why they are where they are…

  68. I haven’t watched a game in a while but it is pretty clear there’s no hope for this team. I really thought they would be a tough gritty team this year. The talent is there but they are clearly missing leadership. ET and Zach were seriously underrated in that category last year.

The stats show no improvement from the returning players on offense. The stats are relatively similar to last year except free throw shooting is worse. The returning guys are putting up nearly the same numbers as last year which is disappointing that they have had no growth. They should have added the points that ET and Zach were providing. Lucas and Calloo had the most opportunity and didn’t take it.

But where the team has fallen off the most is defense. What was a strength last year has turned into a major weakness. Probably one of the worst defenses in the country. Sure injuries have hurt but still. Can’t be that bad.

So don’t think they can get it together by the conference tourney. That magic is all used up.

As for Tinkle, the situation is the exact opposite from last year. The elite 8 run forced the Beavs to give him an extension and now that extension is going to force the Beavs to give him another year. He’s going to have to pull out some big wins from the transfer portal to save his job next year.

    • I don’t know, I’m not sure the talent is there. As you said, they can’t defend. They certainly can’t rebound. It’s very difficult for them to get good shots on offense. Hence the 3-20 record. I thought ET was good, but I don’t think I gave him nearly enough credit. Also. for some reason, Alitishe has regressed. He has added nothing to his game.

Interestingly, after Canzano’s blubbering article blaming the players for this season and giving Tinks another pass, he either edited his article or came out with some new content where he said that Tinks seriously missed on the talent evaluation with this year’s transfers. That’s an understatement!

  69. 2
    2

Recruits/portal transfers will be hard to find after this year’s record. I watched some of last night’s game – Tinkle still coaches – unlike Craig Robinson who only sat when his team was tanking.

    • Tinkle needs to prepare his team better in practice and then he wouldn’t need to spaz out on the sidelines all game. Last year when we went on the run to the elite 8, I noticed he was sitting on the bench most of the game which gave me hope he finally figured this out but it only took a few games into this season before he went back to spaz mode.

    • Robinson didn’t sit. He stood, stomped his foot and yelled move. But the whole at least Tinkle isn’t Robinson defense of the guy is backwards thinking IMO

This Bob Saget news is interesting. Sounds like foul play to me given the level of head trauma and now the family is blocking investigation…

    • 3
      1

They aren’t blocking any investigation. They’re blocking anything related to the investigation and autopsy from being released to the public.

Aren’t you the same guy who thinks a heroin junkies wife murdered him?

      • You’re literally mad about everything. Sucks to be you.
Time will tell, but it’s looking more like murder, you know…per actual prominent doctors.

Of course Courtney had Kurt killed. Your rage about him doing drugs and thus being a worthless human who deserved to be murdered is your own problem. Fix that.

        • One thing that was mentioned and won’t get much attention is that with the conference tourney at the end of the season, they are still scheduled for 55 games with one less week so the schedule tightens up a lot. Affects everyone so not a disadvantage. Pitching depth is going to be huge and the Beavs do run pretty deep. Beavs will need to find 5 solid starters.

          • To me the pitching is the big unknown. Some talent but outside 6 or 7 of them there hasn’t been any meaningful minutes played. Only 2 lefties and one is a freshman. Pitching could be a strength but untested. Media seems to be impressed by the Beavs though so I’m clearly missing something. Looking forward to watching them in Surprise. Hard to beat sunshine, beers and Beavs baseball.

          • We’re just benefiting from brand perception and we’re completely not accustomed to it from other Beaver sports. Pre-season hype in one sport is just as valuable as pre-season hype in another.

Oregon addingaa new layer to their booster funded NIL organization. They’ll produce 120 football specific NFT artwork “profile pics” with the help of Tinker Hatfield and Phil Knight and then bundle each NFT with a pair of curtom Nike shoes and auction those bundles to the highest bidder. Then, 70% of the proceeds go straight to the football players who participate(which will be all of them, including walkons)

Best of all, they’re set up as a nonprofit, so the shoes Nike gives to auction and then pass on to players can be treated as a donation, apparently.
This is how you get Phil Knight money directly into players’ pockets so they’ll play for Oregon. There’s nothing to stop him from purchasing the NFTs as the highest bidder.
Also how you get your walkons paid, making scholarship limits pointless.

    https://ducksofafeather.xyz/

    • 1
      1

There was still a little window where NIL hadn’t completely messed up college but enough time has passed that schools have found loopholes like corporations do. Then to top it off they’re a nonprofit and probably get a tax write off. Oh the world we live in. Lol

    • On a positive note, Alex Austin from your Beavs, using NIL to give out two scholarships. Great to see a college player doing good with this new resource.

    • I like”OSU” better plus it goes w/gameday chants.

But, i think “OS” is medical shorthand for “opening,” so i guess it kinda works for “Beavers.”

      • The OSU in what looked like the stitching on a baseball was my favorite. Searched for it online and only found one with baseball stitching inside the “O”, maybe my memory is failing. Anyone else remember baseball stitching for all three letters?

  72. Jayden Daniels supposed to hit xfer portal. I’d be just fine with Daniel’s as a Beav. Definitely streaky but I think he throws better than Nolan and he’s just as good or better at running the ball.

  73. Angry: NFL.com ranked NY Jets starting QB as #32 in league….hopefully the “arm takent and ability to throw from all angles” turns into something positive. That franchise is somehow cursed (repeatedly poor management).

    • I called this but angry said I had some weird hate towards him. It’s still early though. Going from the mountain west to the NFL is a big jump. Not to mention he doesn’t have much help. I would’ve kept darnold and traded down and gotten him some help.

The value of trading down when you have a top 5 pick is huge. You get so much and save yons of money instead of gambling a bunch of money on a kid.

      • In fairness, the only QB worse than Wilson last year was Darnold, haha. They’re weirdly similar QBs (and were weirdly similar prospects). At least Wilson has some potential for upside, as rookies can definitely get better. (I wouldn’t count on it, though).

      • What are you talking about? I was skeptical of Wilson.

        April 29, 2021 at 5:39 pm
Jets draft Zach Wilson. A formality at this point. Anyone dislike the pick? I like his ability, but he has so much time to throw in every video I’ve seen.

        September 19, 2021 at 12:45 pm

        Zach Wilson is horrible.

In this thread we do get into it a bit, but I don’t see any evidence I loved that pick. I said he’d be better than Darnold, which he was, and as a rookie. So he has more upside. He showed a few good moments this past year, though, but he needs some ability around him to truly say. If you want to get on me for something, it’s that Lance put up good numbers in his limited time.

        • He was on a terrible team with a first year coach. They took a risk given his small sample size of snaps and being in a coaching transition. I think they may have been looking for a Josh Allen-type of outcome.

I’ll be surprised if he recovers but best of luck.

NY needs to prioritize a seasoned GM with a history if success, then let him do his job.

          • Josh Allen was terrible year 1, too, though.

I don’t know what to make of Wilson. He was good in college, but he had all afternoon to throw. He was bad with the Jets, but he had awful players and coaches around him. So, what can anyone make of that? Not much. We need another year and hopefully some players around him to see.

          • He’s a guy who should have sat for a year to learn the NFL like mahomes did. But the Jets couldn’t afford that.

But sometimes it’s just the situation they land in. Trevor Lawrence was rated higher than everyone and got thrown into a dumpster fire that turned into a wildfire. He may not recover.

  74. So did the Beavers 2021 second half slide impact Dorman? Or did he just make good connections w/coaches of a bad AZ team?

He apparently attended ASU @ OSU, which was a decent victory and atmosphere (albeit over a program in disarray), wonder why he cooled on OSU?

    https://www.oregonlive.com/recruiting/2022/02/analysis-will-oregon-state-beavers-land-bluechip-qb-on-tuesday.html?outputType=amp

Maybe he’ll wear a red and blue shirt to the announcement and put on that OSU ball cap Tuesday…

  75. Made it to the beavs baseball game today. I left when it was 10-1 after 7. Get home and see they scored 11 in the 8th. Dam my luck.
