Dirtbag series……….and Spring Football

Let’s see what Mitch and the guys can do against the RPI 111 Dirtbags, more dangerous than their rating. Got to save some in the tank for the Zags coming up after the Easter weekend.

  1. Wheeler with a face mask…don’t think he was rocking one of those earlier this season. Might’ve taken one to the dome in practice or something? Don’t think I’ve seen anything about his injury.

  2. McDowell not wanting a regular spot apparently. Runners in scoring position 2x and strikes out looking both times. He struggled last year too. Gonna look himself into 0 play time.

      • Good to get a close win vs a good opponent but 4 hits isn’t gonna do it for most the remaining schedule that’s for sure. Glad to see Pfennings and Wheeler back at it! Brown’s era still high but seems like he’s becoming our reliable 9th inning guy. Would be great to see him take that role…the closer by committee works about as well as qb by committee.

  3. Good game with lots of upside. Pfennigs very solid thru 2. Townsend with his best outing all season. Wheeler back. Ferrer back to his brutal self. Brown with his 4th save, we have a real closer.

    Downside, McDowell can not hit.

    • McDowell just can’t cut it at this level. I assume it’s psychological because if he was that bad in BP, he wouldn’t be starting.

      • Solid freshman campaign but wasn’t great last year and def had struggles this year. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him xfer as I think the new guys behind him are probably better. Or perhaps Meckler can play center and Fuchs more time in left if Melton is sitting. Regardless, think there are other options when sitting the starters if he continues to struggle in the batters box.

  4. Canzano with a brief column on NIL and a couple other topics.
Mentions the WSU collective that was set up by donors to help entice their QB transfer to come to WSU and how the haves and have nots are likely to become even more separated as teams like oregon start using 6-7 figure deals to “land” the big recruits like Josh Connerly last week.
I do wonder if the money is going to start taking the competitive edge away for some of the top tier players. Used to be they had to worry about performing well to hit the NFL.
Now they’re already getting paid early, and I could see how all of that extra business dealing and cash flow could be a distraction in an already busy schedule.
Either way, OSU isnt in coming from a position of competitve advantage as usual and will likely continue to get left in the dust.

    • I don’t know what’s worse, dirty recruiting when you don’t see what players are getting paid, or NIL, where you see what they’re getting paid. These “collectives” kind of make me wince. All of it means you really have to enjoy wins like @ USC last year, or the rare time a Wisconsin visits and loses….the NIL imbalance is going to leave OSU in the dust. One has to hope that all of the money imbalance will create chemistry and leadership issues at other programs such that they don’t perform to potential. That UO Duck DE that thinks he’s the best player in the draft, he had NIL, and many in the NFL thought he took series/plays off. There criticisms could be a draft smoke screen to try and make him drop, but his numbers don’t appear to match his physical potential. I don’t think his best season matches up to the best season of Hamilcar Rashed Jr. for example.

I did like the bit on JT Daniels’ visit and the players’ assertion he wouldn’t get “guaranteed playing time.”

“OVER AND OUT: Journeyman college quarterback JT Daniels announced this week that he’s transferring from Georgia to West Virginia. He and his father showed up at an Oregon State spring practice a few weeks ago and observed. The Beavers knew Daniels was shopping as he declined an offer to take some photos wearing OSU gear during his visit. But the most interesting part of his trip to Corvallis was how it was viewed by current players on the roster.

Everyone knows Daniels was looking for a promise of playing time or maybe even a guarantee that he’d start.

Said one veteran OSU player: “He won’t get a guarantee of playing time here — no way. That’s not how our coach works. How would that go over in the locker room? He’d never have guys behind him. Also, some of us were talking about it… I mean, it was like he was there scouting our other quarterbacks to see what the competition was like.”

Is his decision to attend West Virginia a vote of confidence for incumbents Chance Nolan and Tristan Gebbia? Maybe. But the bigger endorsement came when I told that same veteran Beavers’ player that I wondered if Jonathan Smith still needed to find a quarterback capable of winning games in the final two minutes.

The player shot back: “You’re wrong there. I think we have at least two.”

I think I’d prefer the dirty recruiting over having NIL out in the open. At least with dirty recruiting, a percentage pf S/As wouldnt have been willing to engage in under the table deals for fear of risking their eligibility.
Now, everybody on down to walkons are affected amd getting a cut of the pie, but only at certain schools. See guys like Cole Prusia who walked on at UofO this week. We were considering him a scholarship athlete in the 2021 class, and now oregon picks him up without wasting a spot.
It’s little recruiting losses like that which will continue to pile up and further divide teams and competitive balance.

And the Beavs just squeezed every ounce of juice from their donor group to get this Reser project completed. That’s great for the fans who want new seating options, but the players dont get any benefit from a remodel other than seeing the fans at a slightly different angle. Our program would have been better off putting that money towards stacking roster spots and keeping Reser looking half assed.

  5. LBSU starter struck out the side in bottom of the second. All looking. That’s impressive. And terrible for the Beavs.

    All Hjerpe K’s are swinging.

    • A lot of his advantage went away when the shadows got to him. Not to say he isn’t a top notch talent, 1 earned run in 30 innings proves that in any league.

  6. Not only has LB Baseball adopted “Dirtbags” as their moniker – the school has adopted “the Beach” as their official nickname for other sports. The Long Beach Beach? (Formerly 49ers – 1949ers when the school was founded) They also dumped brown for black back in 2000 – I did not know that.

      • For as many runs as we score we sure do leave a lot of runners on base. Got him out of the game though so can we capitalize on relief pitching? We shall see.

  7. Anyone else pleasantly surprised at Forrester’s play at 1b? I think there has only been one play this season where he was sub par.
Nice play to tag the batter for the 2nd out in the t5.

EDIT: Nice play to get the 2 and 3 outs to finish the t6; guess I jinxed him on the play just before that.

    • Yeah, he had a few games with an E or two but all in all he’s pretty dam good defensively. On a side note, heard Parker say the offense is completely ran by Gipson which is pretty cool. Mitch learning to delegate. Perhaps this was known to everyone else but me. Lol

  8. Nice game. Tuned in just in time to see the three straight bloop singles and thought I put the old jinx on. Thankfully they overcame my viewing presence!

    • The baseball gods quickly corrected that string of oddities. One run scored but then a rare 3-5 double play to end the inning. It could have been much much worse.

Nice to see the Beavs pile on a bunch of insurance runs.

  9. I’m sure I’m not the first to think Hjerpe reminds me of a lefty Eckersley. I wouldn’t be surprised if he finds an MLB career in the bullpen. He would be a difficult pitcher for any batter to adjust to.

  10. Considering the timing of NIL developments, this is probably OSU’s last chance to compete in PAC-12 football until the rules radically change. The Daniels scenario just confirms that. Major NIL spending seems to be mostly confined to top-tier recruits at the biggest programs, but it’s beginning to filter down through the rest of college football and it feels like next year will be the tipping point.

As usual, OSU will be late to the game and at a disadvantage until they’re able to catch up. Smith and his staff are smart guys and I’m sure they’re picking up on the need to adapt to stay competitive in recruiting, but it’s highly unlikely they’ll get support from the AD.

      1

I think the only thing the school/AD can do is try to convince businesses and donors to offer deals to our recruits. If nobody is interested in that, then the school can’t do much about it. We don’t have a billionaire booster who is willing to create a corporation dedicated solely to paying student athletes.

    • Again, that’s why last year was a special opportunity and the mid season slump against the likes of Cal and CSU was so frustrating.

What’s striking to me us even WSU puttibg up $60K and an apartment for a QB. As distasteful as it is, they’re ahead of OSU in the new game.

This might be the last LAST chance for OSU to have a special season. ?

The D will need to be upper 1/3 in the PAC, Martinez will have to be special, a QB will need to make downfield throws, and Smith will need to make more strategic calls.

Reser won’t be a home field advantage w/25K on mostly one side of the stadium….

      • Only change is finding players who feel disrespected and want a chance to play power 5 for example Jermar Jefferson. Plenty of chances to outwork guys when they are 18-22 years old and really want a chance at the nfl. Good news is there’s not a huge difference between a four and three star. Think they’ll ever split college sports into NIL paying schools and non NIL ones?

  11. D1 had only Tennessee and Miami ranked ahead of the Beavs at the start of the week. Now both of those teams have lost two in a row, not that it matters, but will the Beavs be #1 Monday?
Even Texas Tech, the #4 team has dropped three lately.

Speculation here was that Tenn would come back down to earth when they faced SEC opponents; notice that one of their losses this week was to 19-13 Tennessee Tech, RPI 103.

Word is, the folks over at AngryVols are calling for the head of head coach Tony Vitello…..lol

    • Do not want that top seed. The top seed has not won the cws in over 20 years. Beavs have blown it both times as the top seed.

Want Tennessee to keep winning. Then they blow it at the end.

    • If they drop the Alabama series and we sweep I guess it’s possible. They still have a 4 loss advantage as of today so it would be a joke for them to lose top spot if they win the bama series. They have a tough road ahead with bama, Georgia, UK, Auburn, Florida and MSState series left. I don’t really see any reason to think they are good enough to avoid dropping 1 game in all of those. The question will be if they can handle adversity or crumple by post season without that big dick energy.

TTech was RPI 150 when they won

  12. Gebbia getting the 1st team offense start. All passes at the receivers’ finger tips, and no completions. Plus a sack.
Not sure if that’s on the receivers or Gebbia. All passes have been just slightly high, but catchable.

    • I didn’t catch the broadcast opening, are they running just pass plays? The “D” is winning so far. The offense looks a step slow.

      • 1st series with Gebbia was all passes, but next couple of series with Nolan/Gulbranson had a mix of run/pass with several RBs touching the ball.
Nolan and Gebbia’s downfield passing is still pretty suspect so far. Gulbramson has been more accurate, but the game is currently a little too fast for him. His inexperience is showing, but the potential is there.

      • Are you saying only the practices we don’t see are the ones that translate to game play? Or are you saying no practice has any indication of how they’ll play in a real game?

  13. Gavin Haines with a 15 yard td run. Collins set it up with a strong left side run for 6 or 7. Gulbranson thrown a few good balls but haven’t seen all his plays as I just started watching about 25 min in. Squints still squinting though even in his interview. Lol. Franke looks big out there…Jesus. more like a DE almost. Makes colletto look small. Then has a strip sack fumble recovery as I’m typing this. Edge rush.

  14. Martinez takes it in from 6 on a sweep. He and Fenwick look really similar in size and he’s only a freshman. Dam. Franke listed at 6’3″ 250lbs and that’s probably accurate. Gulbranson just threw a nice 30 yd td to Bolden. From what I’ve seen he’s looked pretty good.

    • Hard to get a good read on Gulbranson because he mostly played vs 3rd string defense players too. Arm looks to be strongest and most accurate of the bunch, but decision making needs to speed up.
Still think Chance is the overall leading QB, just wish he had a more accurate deep ball because missing those plays really kills a drive

  15. They didn’t show the last play of the game which was a screen pass to Bolden who scores a TD. Smith calls the game after the TD. WR room could be fun!

  16. Spring Game Recap from Nukes Desk:
Weather – 45F and Rainy as shit, looked horrible. Comfortable 68 with 12% humidity in my office.

Defense – Bray kept us in a very aggressive 4-3 with a mix of 4-4. Always a shit show to judge with intra squad but I will say it looks like it will be very fun to watch. I don’t think Bray is going to let qbs sit around for 8+ seconds. That said I do think our Corners are going to be asked to be on the island ALOT. The vanilla scheme he showed to do looks like a good building block for the players on the roster and the types we can reliably recruit.

Offense – We have a shit load of athletes who can do damage. I saw Lindsay, Lowe, Bolden and TE getting open regularly. Offenseive line looks decent, good fundamentals. RB’s look interesting.

QB’s I am grading on vision, accuracy, arm, pocket awareness and reads.
    Nolan – D, F, B, A, C
    Gebbia – C, D, C+, B, B
    Gulbranson – B, A, A, C, C

Basically I see no reason for Gebbia or Nolan to start. They look like they have hit their ceiling and its not great. Gulbranson is lacking experience in live play. Gulbranson was accurate at all levels hitting guys in stride and keeping them out of the hospital. Nolan is more of the same. Gebbia can throw screens and hospital balls.

    Players who caught my eye:

Bolden – Starting to look more like his brother, gets open well with shifty hips and decent speed, catches the ball and is very dangerous in space.

Collins – Very quick acceleration. He gets the ball and gets the hell out of the pocket in a hurry. He kind of has that quiz thing were it looks like a 3-4 yard run then you realize it was 15. Does not avoid contact at all like you see from some smaller backs. Has the BJ thing where he freaking hates going down.

Martinez – Didn’t play a lot but he looks impressive. Honestly he looks like McCants but you know…can actually break a tackle and is shifty. Had a real nice little TD run. Pretty sure kids in Texas are still having nightmares about lining up against that dude.

JT Bryne – Mostly played with Gulbranson but I was very impressed with his size, speed, route running and hands. He is high on the list to get playing time imo.

Defensively it was honestly really hard to tell who was who with the P12 shit camera work and all the rotation going on. Lots of guys on the line aggressively going after the pocket. I did see Jack very nicely decide not to send Dunmore to the hospital on a horrible decision from Gebbia. Dunmore definitely didn’t enjoy the occasion.

    • Bonus content from P12 interviews: Scott Barnes definitely got a chubby blowing up Reser. I think he may have discovered something about himself.

      • Agree with your QB assessment 100%. And Byrne stood out at TE. Overman had a couple drops, but one was in double coverage and shouldn’t have been thrown to him.
I noticed #19 Skyler Thomas got a lot of reps at CB and seemed to be around the ball alot.
I’m really curious about Masceranas, is he getting passed up on the depth chart, or being held out from injury?
Anybody hear any news on Julian’s recovery? I think him and Olidapo would be a scary safety combo!

          • I find hope there will be defensive play to create TOs and field position wins, first a simpler, faster scheme that alternates fronts under Bray, then players like Easton, Chatfield, Lolohea, Alton…maybe Speights gets back to his early potential (didn’t he seem to drop off in production last year?), McCartan and Sharp disrupt with their height, I think Fisher is going to be faster than Roberts, abd throw in newcomers Malaki-Donaldson and Hickle for fresh legs and developmental reps at least.

            Thanks for the reports!

      • Just great. Glad we will have another season of good offensive weapons held back by lack of a good qb. Why can’t one of these guys break away from the rest. Who coaching Nolan up on the deep ball?

        • As Angry has suggested, you probably really can’t teach accuracy. By now, they ought to be able to do it and/or put it where the defender can’t get it in close coverage. As you suggest, the offense will probably be about 75-80% of what it could be v. if somebody could hit the longer throws, deep outs, and corner fades.

    • Main difference with Collins vs Quizz is Quizz had more strength and kept the pile moving forward after contact. Collings got lit up by Junior Walling today in a goal line situation and lost yardage on it

      • Walling was around the ball a lot from the reps I saw of him. Didn’t know his #…saw #14 was making some plays and had to look it up. Think Fenwick and Martinez are gonna give some nightmares just based purely on size…could be like a Steven Jackson situation where players aren’t gonna wanna be tackling these guys in the 4th quarter. Not saying they’re A Jack by any means just that situation of continual smash mouth ball wears on you. Lowe and Collins for the quick burst guys. Didn’t see Newell at all…really liked him outta high school and I’m a little surprised he hasn’t xferred tbh. Not sure he’ll see the field with those 4 plus the xfer from GT.

      • yeah I don’t think they are really the same at all. They just both have that deceptive quality where it looks okay but then you realize it was a great run. Might be a short quick guy thing.

      • Quizz was an every down back. Not saying you guys are doing this but I think his height caused a lot of people to mischaracterize him.

    • Too bad Nolan and Gebbia didn’t show obvious improvement. They’ve been at it long enough. Ideally Gulbranson would get some PT in pre-conference games, but a few of those games are gimmes.
Lots to speculate on this summer.

Martinez will probably even further improve conditioning over the summer and look like a starter in the fall.

If the D can stay healthy in the fall, it sounds like they’re are several impact players, thought not the depth we’d probably like.

  17. Thomas Dukart getting the start in place of Melton.
Heard a rumor of mono for Melton? But i cant verify so just rumor at this point. Thought Parker said he was at batting practice yesterday and they just decided to sit him out, but thought he could have been able to come in if needed later in the game. That doesn’t sound like mono if Parker’s report was accurate

      • Right? I’m always nervous as we get these reports of it’s nothing too major and 2 months later still haven’t seen the field. I’m also wondering about Tyree? I don’t think I’ve even seen him in the dugout but he still posts or likes Beavs shit on Twitter so seems like he’s still there. Know he had an injury in high school last year but thought he’d be ready for this season.

    • It is interesting. If he can get quality innings then we save some arms like Lattery and Sebby for midweek. We essentially have P12 starters in Hjerpe, Pfennigs, Kmatz, Ferrer, Hunter and Lattery. Looking like a hell of a tournament team all of a sudden.

  18. Thomas dukart has some work to do at the plate. His at bats have been pretty awful. 0-4 with 4 k’s and the counts haven’t been in his favor at any point I don’t think. Young and has time to grow but he’ll want to forget this day for sure.

    • Probably why he hasn’t seen the field until now. Mitch gave him a shot, don’t think he’ll get many more for the rest of the year.

    • I was actually just looking at that picture and wondering the same thing. Definitely some guys that didn’t dress in the picture so even if injured or sitting out would seem like he would’ve been there. That would be unfortunate…unless he moved back to o-line?

  19. My thoughts from spring game/looking ahead to fall depth chart
Unfortunately was only able to stay for about half an hour

-Gulbranson in my opinion looked the best of the 3 quarterbacks, and definitely had the strongest arm. Nolan ran with the ones exclusively and struggled with deep ball while Gebbia ran with twos as well, Gulbranson ran with 2s and 3s. Need Chance to take that next step too be a pac-12 north championship team
-Martinez definitely looks the part, should have a strong trio with him fenwick and Lowe, don’t expect Newell or Collins to get much run. Through in griffin and the room just gets scarier
-Wideouts with the ones were Gould Harrison and Lindsey, Bolden definitely flashed and I thought dunmore did well too, overall intrigued by the potential depth of this group. Noticed Noga was and has been getting a lot of runs with the twos this spring
-Overman and Musgrave appear locked in as starters, Bryce Caufield number 3 right now and could be where Jack Velling lands as a freshamn
-OL Starters looked good, 2s struggled with pass rush but a few 2s were out (White, Morano, and Bloomfield) letting guys like Espinoza McHarg and Holmes get some run
-Brays Defense looks much more aggressive then tibs and the pass rush for the most part was good today, need a few more DL bodies but love the Edge rusher depth
    – Inside linebacker looks great right now with Omar Fisher Easton Colletto and JM
-DBs return everyone and ran a lot of press man, fitting Brays more aggressive scheme. Was interesting to see Ryan Cooper already running with the ones while Rejzohn is injured despite only being with the program for 3 weeks. Also hearing JG is moving to safety and expect more 4 DB schemes

Based off what I’ve seen/been told by players this is what I expect the depth chart to look like as of now

    QB-Nolan-Gebbia-Gulbranson
    RB-Fenwick-Lowe-Martinez-Griffin
    WRs-Gould-Harrison-Lindsey
    Bolden-Dunmore-Tounge
    Irish-Munyagi-Valsin
    TE-Musgrave-Overman-Caufield-Bryne WATCH FOR VELLING
    OL(L-R)- Gray-Brewer-Levengood-Kipper-Fuaga
    Spencer-Morano-Miller-Bloomfield-White
    DL- Hodgins-Sio-Sandberg
    Lolohea-Shippen-Rawls
    Anderson and Fa’amoe
    Edge/OLB- McCarten-Chatfield
    Sharp-Stover
Franke-Saluni Really deep group I expect a lot of rotations
    ILB-Speights-Fisher
    Mascarenas-Colletto
    Miller-Walling
    DB (C-S-S-C)-Wright-Grant-Julian-Austin *NB Hardge
    Cooper-Arnold-Oladapo-Robinson *NB Russell
    Thomas-Kane-Massey-Russell
    K-Hayes
    P-Loecher
    LS-Black
    PR-Gould
    KR-Gould or Bolden with colletto

    • Thanks for the write up- my only note is with the RBs – I thought Collins flashed and was the only guy to really stand out. Looked fast & quick with some nice cuts.

Martinez definitely looks big but he also looked slow & tentative to me. Hopefully that’s just youth but as of now I wouldn’t be penciling him in, or Collins out.

    • Wish Gulbranson had gotten some time with the 1’s. His ball placement is so much better than both of Gebbia/Nolan. He makes the easy throws look easy, while the other two were making them look forced. But that could also be a product of the defense he played against wasnt flying around as much.
And he did get sacked twice at least, so the quick decision making isnt quite there yet. But I think he has by far the most potential and chance to grow of the 3. The other 2, as others have said, have hit their cap or are just about there already.

    • Thanks for the link.

Gebbia looked pretty rusty. I think it would be nice to see Gulbranson run with the 1s against the #2 defense at least.

    • Rewatching I thought I had really miss judged Nolan when he started hitting with really accurate tight throws. Then I realized it was Gulbranson.

  20. Beavs up to 4th in RPI per D1 baseball

    Ducks up to 6th.

Cats dropping like a rock after dropping back to back series to Wazzu and Utah.

Beavs should certainly move up in the polls and may even be number 1 tomorrow after Tennessee and Miami both went 2-2 this week.

Tough couple early week games against the Zags starting Monday

  21. Hey NB, looks like we might be close to landing a class of 23 guy.

6’4 QB Aidan Chiles, we are his only P5 offer atm but his stock is heating up as he’s gaining interest from other programs such as UCLA. On3 updated predictions have us at a 87.1% shot to land him, although this could be another Katin Houser type situation.

    • I run an OSU football fan page on Instagram (Beavs.report) and I followed him over there, got a follow back pretty quick. Does this mean anything? Probably not.

Am I gonna over react and say he’s committing soon? Also probably lol

        • Kidding aside, he looks like a solid prospect. Good size and athleticism. Arm strength and accuracy are there on fill. He can make a pretty wide variety of throws. Looks like he may need to learn to go further through progressions, but that can be hard to decipher from just highlights.

MaxPreps stats look incomplete, but 6 games’ worth show a 73% completion percentage and 10/2 TD/INT ratio.

      • I’m bracing for the pattern already. “Under radar” guy who Beavs ID early on, not many offers so we look pretty cute. Verbal commits and then sees value rise and those home town/state offers start popping up. The verbal decommit saying still the top option but feel it’s wise to consider all options and then a week later verbally commits somewhere else and we’re caught with our pants down. Then we grab the JC recruit that needs contacts, or is color blind so can’t tell the difference in jerseys, or the grad xfer that has been moved to 3 different positions but yet we feel they’re a good qb. With all the RBs we have it might be best to run wildcat or bring back the Pettibone era triple option. Anyway, would be nice to get a qb on the books!

    • Stanford making a run up the polls. Good news for the beavs as the series loss looks not as bad anymore.

Beavs can’t get ahead of this weekend as the last three series of the year are likely against ranked teams. Pac12 needs the top teams to keep playing well. Looks like 4 will get in, probably 5. Possibly 6 if the top teams take the conf tourney off.

  22. Just watched the highlights of the scrimmage. Really liked what I saw from the defense. Some of the newer faces have length and physicality. The aggression and tackling looked a lot better. They definitely have developed a lot of depth on defense.

  23. Rain rain rain in Corvallis. I guess since the field is all turf now including the mound, they’ll play.

Not sure how much the zags have left. They didn’t go deep into their bullpen over the weekend but not sure how their weekday guys throw.

But it’s one of those series that the offense will need to get up early and the bullpen will need to hang on. Both teams used to the rain so no advantage there. Zags want to host a regional and a couple wins at OSU could get them that spot. Good test of teams depth for when they are in the deciding game in a regional.

A split would be an acceptable outcome.

    • Will be interesting to see this zags team vs the zags in surprise from Feb. They had some guys that could throw a lot of heat but control became an issue after 3 or 4 innings. A split would be good for sure.

  24. Thumb up if you guys want a new thread for Gonzaga; angry may be working on a FB thread so one for the Zags could be pretty short.

A split would probably be OK as you’ve said, Zags currently RPI 14 and ranked 11 or 12.
Would be nice to see Melton return.
