  1. Key to winning – Reid, Barton, Morris-Walker, Schaftenaar have to contribute something other than 0.

They were 0 -10 vs Oregon. 3 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 steals, and 2 turnovers and that’s not too far off from their season averages.

    • Olaf needs to start making shots. We’ve seen him knock down some open threes, he needs to do it consistently. He had great looks against Oregon, just didn’t make ’em. He needs to knock ’em down moving forward.

      • I don’t feel like having Olaf trying to find th net again. I have seen him jack up 15 or so three pointers and not make more than 2. In game he doesn’t gt\et the job done. If they don’t fall over 33% of the time the not only are they bad shots but they also are leading to fast breaks the other way. Olaf is a dud. Pound Collier inside, have Moreland do more posting up also, consider more Moreland at the top of the 1-3-1 and quit running 60% of the offense through Burton. Burton should only be handling it on 15% of plays, Starks needs to learn the penetrate and dish just as much as he does shooting 3s even though he is our best shooter. Play Morris-Walker more and Olaf much less unless he cares to actually buy a damn bucket.

  2. Your game thread e-mails have acted as a great reminder that a game is about to be played.

However, I’m now considering requesting that I be removed from the mailing list so that I won’t know when the next game is and that way won’t be tempted to expose myself to OSU ratball which just drives me up the wall.

It would appear that I’m currently not masochistic enough cuz I’m not enjoying watching that shitty play.

    When does baseball start?

Dr. Ray, it’s time to get rid of bobby d.

  3. Some poster had this on BTD:

It’s all about the defense, for the most part. The Beavers currently rank No. 180 (180!!!!) in the nation in defensive efficiency. To put that in perspective, OSU finished No. 153 at the end of the infamous 0-18 season during the Jay John era (although its atrocious No. 264 ranking in offensive efficiency played a large role in that dubious mark).

Here are OSU’s final defensive efficiency numbers since CR started…

    2009: 95
    2010: 72
    2011: 142
    2012: 154

That’s called serious regression! The team does not play with any real defensive determination. They just go through the motions and seem to not mind being scored on at all. It just gives them the ball back that much sooner for Burton to try a pass or Schaftenaar to try to look good throwing up bricks. :(

      • I think there was some sarcasm involved in that comment, but maybe one of the Beaver assistants might actually ride their asses until they made an attempt at playing defense instead of the post-game psycho-babble with get from CR explaining away another uninspired performance. Remember, they are still “learning how to win”….wait all of Jay John’s guys are gone….so what exactly are they learning?

    • I agree. this program has regressed and I just don’t get it. It seems the talent is there but there is lacking in fundamentals that makes them flawed

  4. Collier’s playing well. I can kind of understand why he’s coming off the bench, but I didn’t understand why he’s only playing 25 minutes a game. Devon should be going 35 unless he has foul trouble.

  5. Here’s a scary thought…without Moreland there’s not a single game I would call a sure win. ASU has already figured out to double team Collier and now they’re ahead by six.

  6. I wonder if Lamar Hurd reads this blog….interesting how he referred to Beav fans love/hate relationship with Joe Burton. Usually the announcers are annointing Burton the second coming of Magic Johnson and ignoring the five stupid plays he makes a game.

  7. well I just shut it off when we went down 10. My gf bought tix to Saturday nights game last month so I’ll have to suffer through that beatdown. Maybe I’ll get lucky and come down with some kind of sickness before then. Just hopefully not the aids. goodnight all

  8. Starks shots a quick shot and bricks it. Burton challenges the ASU 7 footer and gets smoked. The defense gives up two layups. Down 8 with 2 minutes left.

    • Kind of feels like the wheels are coming off doesn’t it? Just enough talent to beat some crappy mid-majors and that’s about it without Brandt or Moreland.

  9. Hunt tweet: “He’ll back, I’ve been told,” Robinson said of Moreland. “But I don’t know when.”

What’s he mean by “I’ve been told”? Is it a grades issue?

  10. Well. another ugh game. I was flipping between other games and every other game looked like basketball. Not sure what the beavs looks like.

Here were the good things out of the game,
    1. Collier working hard in the post. Loved that. Teams will have to respect that now and should open things up outside.
    2. Reid, Barton, Morris-Walker, and Schaftenaar decided to step up a bit. Nice to see that they can actually do something. A good stat line from the zeros I pointed out earlier. They went 10-21, 23pts, 14 boards, 8 assists, 1 block and only 2 turnovers.

And to the bad things, of course lots of them.
    1. Burton – Waste of time. 27 minutes and zero points. He’s a big liabilty on defense. He should be boxing the hell out of people but he always just stands there hoping the ball comes to him. Find your guy, box him out of the paint. Collier or Reid can get the board if it doesn’t come to you but give your guy no shot at the ball! Also, he can’t be the guy who feeds Collier in the post. If Devon needs to get the ball out, Burton is no threat to shoot from distance.
    2. Shaftenaar – He’s not a good game shooter, needs to work on shooting with guys all over him. But otherwise, the only way he’ll grow is to keep shooting.
    3. Starks – Still not using his screens as best he could.
    4. The screens this team sets are just bad. The defense isn’t respecting them at all.
    5. So many times down the floor, it looks like there is no game plan for attacking. Discipline is clearly not there.

  11. I think the way the Beavs fought their way back from down 13 to only 3 should earn coach Rob another year extension on his contract.

  12. Burton standing at the 3-point line during the offense is absolutely brutal; we’re playing 4v5 because he isn’t a threat to shoot or penetrate from up there. Not even to mention his lack of defense or rebounding, or his turnovers. Just playing 4v5 for half the game is devastating.

I keep wanting to hate this team; Starks just plays street ball, Burton is garbage, we have no offensive system at all….and then I remember our best player is injured. It’s hard to be mad when you’re missing your most important guy. That doesn’t mean Craig gets off the hook, just that I’m not nearly as disappointed as I would otherwise be.

  13. If the goal if this years team is to host another CBI Tournament game they are right on track. I think you can make the CBI with a losing record.

I watched the Ducks beat Arizona then the Beaver debacle…my only reaction. Jealousy. JB

    CBI Madness….catch it!!

    • Did you wish you were down there rushing the court after beating a team that should have lost, (and actually did lose 1) of its 3 most recent games? Arizona was due for that loss. I agree though, a win would he nice for a change.

      • No…. I’m way to old to rush anything except a bathroom. The differences were extreme…rollicking Eugene, emptying… quite Gill. I expect UA to rebound and administer a severe beat down tomorrow. JB

      • There are worse things than rushing the court after beating a top 5 ranked team. One example might be losing to Towson State but who knows? Maybe we also will beat Arizona since they really aren’t as good as the pollsters rank them. Then again, maybe we don’t. Wow, maybe we can win for losing. Or maybe not. Some things are not what they appear to be, but sometimes they are. But maybe not. Maybe we really are a lot better than we are currently playing, but maybe not. I really can’t tell yet, but maybe I can tell after the next game. But maybe not.
