Rest In Peace, the False Narrative

140

Blitz had this article up on Thursday after Riley bailed.

We’ve all seen what The Oregonian (Lindsay Schnell and Ken Goe) has written about OSU.

With the poaching of Gary Andersen from Wisconsin, I ask sincerely: can we put the false narrative that OSU is a cow-town that nobody would ever (a) want to coach in or (b) want to play in….to rest?

Everything I predicted years ago has come true. Riley was the problem. The fanbase is stoked. We could upgrade the coach, etc. Welcome to the era of what we’ve all wanted. It feels surreal, but this is the NEW narrative.

  1. As much as I hope this to be true, I think it’s only mortally wounded right now. Not dead yet.

It’ll be dead if Andersen gets this program contending for a PAC-12 championship within the next 2-3 years though.

  2. I’m glad OSU went for the splash hire. A 4 star recruit. I wonder how much misdirection BDC gave the media when all the names were put out there.

Media reports a 3 million dollar buyout.

  3. Just saw this comment which made me chuckle….

    Robert Husseman @RHusseman · 1h 1 hour ago

The new Valley Football Center must be beyond our wildest dreams.

  4. Angry Anderson fits exactly what you were calling for… A Defensive minded coach who loves to run the rock! Couple that with the QB and WR talent we are known for pulling in and I think this could be a beautiful marriage

    • “Angry Anderson fits exactly what you were calling for”

Which leads me to believe Angry had inside info and was just stringing us along to build up subscriptions for his site….oh….nevermind….

  5. Is Anderson possibly running from Alvarez’s meddlesome presence a false alternative narrative?

I’m curious about your collective take on that angle of these developments. I mean that this is possibly a great hire, but it has a dark lining if he was primarily running from the weird pressures of his old job.

      • What I am getting at is that a person having dual motivations for making a major life decision sometimes allows the immediate motivation, rather than a more carefully analyzed one, to win out on the decision making process.

Only in retrospect does it become clearer that maybe the immediate stimulus was not a rational one and buyer’s remorse could result.

All manner of motives for Anderson jumping the Wisky ship have arisen.

        1) family hates state of WI.
        2) Anderson didn’t like Wisky admins, including Alvarez.
        3) too much heat for last Saturday’s beat down.
        4) pressure to get to CFP is out of line with Wisky’s historical status in the BIG. (Delusional fans)

If Anderson is running away from Wisky as much or more as running to you, you have to wonder about his longer term career plan is all.

I was just wondering what your guys’ take on Wisky being the motive for his abrupt career move.

        • Andersen likes the west coast, and a west coast job opened up. He contacted OSU. I don’t think he was running from Wisconsin. Watch Alvarez in the presser–he says Andersen mostly made a family decision.

  6. I had some inside info last week and didn’t now it. A gal that works for the little lady is a Wisky grad, as well her hubby. They had a meeting the day after Mikey left and she told her that her husband is positive the Gary Anderson is going take the Oregon State job. My reply was something along the lines that her hubby is serious dumb shit and there is now way in hell he is going to OSU.
    Who would have thunk it?

  7. Looks like Ted Miller is saying that it is very likely that Anderson’s DC, Dave Aranda will be coming along with him. Reading his credentials, I’m liking this hire even better if he joins the staff…

    Go Beavs!

  8. ESPN’s college football page is totally on top of things.

Headline story “How Did Nebraska Pull It Off?” —story about how nebraska managed to hire away mike riley from osu, without anybody knowing.

  9. Just saw Gary’s bio that he was an assistant at Rick’s College (1989-92). Being a mormon (or having a mormon background) will continue the ‘family atmosphere’ and have a leg up with the Polynesian recruits.

  10. Nice hire OSU! Matt Wells got his football DNA from Gary Andersen.
Me thinks BDC was in a HireMattWells state of mind! I wonder what his thoughts on real Spring Games are? Orange vs Black would be fun for our first taste.

  11. Angry, your going to have to change this website to happy Beavs dot com. How can the fan base not be stoked with Casey, Tinkle, and now Gary Andersen. Today is a great day to be a Beaver

  12. Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon’s reaction to news that Andersen is coming to OSU

    Had this to say:
“Asked if he thought Andersen made the jump in part to install a spread offense — the pro-style attack is a long-standing tradition at Wisconsin — Gordon said he and a few teammates believed it was a factor.

“At the end of the day we don’t know that but it’s a good reason,” Gordon said. “

  13. Could this be why Angry tinted the Angry Orange color on this site to the RED side of the hue scale long ago? A sign of things to come? This week has been bookended by two very RED schools.

    Makes you go hmmmmm…

  14. Hope He brings Aranda with him.. The only negative of this hire is what the hell happened in the Ohio State game!!

Additionally, Wisconsin has been slow to evolve when it comes to paying assistants what has become customary market value elsewhere.

He’s afraid of losing Dave; a coach told me, referring to Badgers defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, who should have been a Broyles Award finalist after the outstanding job he’s done in 2014.

Whichever SEC teams miss out on Will Muschamp — whether it’s Auburn, Texas A&M or South Carolina — could wind up pushing for Aranda. Each would likely offer in the $1 million per year range.

  15. It’s sounding like part of the reason he’s leaving is he wants to run the spread offense and there’s some pushback from ‘old school Wisconsin’ people. Kind of like the shit Rich Rodriguez was dealing with. ‘A Michigan man doesn’t let the QB run the ball.’

Wisconsin has this kid committed, I bet we make a run at him. Sorry James Pensyl, I bet you don’t fit the offense. Maybe Mike will take you.

  16. What are the odds on:

    1) Oregon State players/recruits being able to learn the new playbook quickly by next fall?

    2) Oregon State having a winning record?

    3) Oregon State having no injuries at the start of Fall camp?

and 4) We get most of Gary Andersen’s Assistants?!

  17. I’m in such a good mood with this hire, how about random speculation.

Andersen wants to run the spread…Braxton Miller to transfer to old OSU?

  18. Bob D just wrote me back to say thanks for my donation and for encouraging others to do the same. Get out and donate what you can, fellas.

    • I just dropped a deposit on tickets, haven’t been a season ticket holder in ages. I’ll be bringing friends who are new to the Beavers, or giving them to folks who may not otherwise go.

I haven’t been this excited for football in quite some time.

      • I’m going to be making a lot more donations.

I don’t hate OSU. I just hated the mentality. Today feels like a sea change. Even if this coach doesn’t work out (though I think he will), it’s a learning experience where people finally realize there is life beyond Riley. The entire blog was based around helping/making/forcing people to realize this.

I have one major concern, but I’ll talk about that over the upcoming days.

  19. You know who I will give a huge assist to in this hire? Wayne Tinkle.

Bob was on the fence about making the move to get a new basketball coach. He finally pulls the trigger and we get Wayne Tinkle in here…and season tickets and donations explode. The windfall of that excitement had to make Bob think what could be done if he could get Mike out of town for a reasonable sum of money.

    Thanks coach Tinkle!

    • Yep … this is SO weird! Nobody in the freakin world could have predicted this. Nebraska hires Riley, a clearly worse coach than they had, and OSU miraculously gets out from under a huge ablatross, his contract. Then we hire a better coach… Holy crap, this is MIRACULOUS!

  20. I just bought 2 season tickets for Women’s Basketball in preparation of giving up my Football season tickets, but now I may have to reconsider.

    • I just hope Brennan gets rewarded for being a good soldier this week, pretty much the only one who acted like he still gave a shit. I’d love Seumalo to stick around too, but…we’ll see I guess.

  21. Andersen’s contract, 5 or 6 years starting at $2.5million.

To me, that’s a fucking bargain, especially in light of Mediocre Mike’s $2.7 million per year.

  22. “The Beavers’ hiring of Gary Andersen from Wisconsin sent the college football sphere into a frenzy on Wednesday afternoon, with several prominent analysts and Oregon State fans showing their support for the hire.

In fact, within minutes of OSU’s announcement, Gary Andersen was the #6 trending topic in the world on Twitter.”

    – Eat Me Goe

    • Oh he’ll be bringing it. He already has some mobile QB like McMaryion waiting in the wings… It’s gonna be great. I think it’s going to take a lot of the pressure off our OL and pass blocking. Our RBs are going to flourish.

  23. I’m sorry but what in the actual fuck is that article

“As simple as it sounds, and as difficult as it may be for some to believe, Riley’s teams were overachievers.”

Right ok, the student who gets a C could be considered an overachiever when compared to the F student.

“Fans are never satisfied, though; it’s human nature to always want more, to be greedy.”

Oh right, because wanting an A is totally greedy. This article, unless I’m reading it wrong, is actually chiding/patronizing the fans for expecting performance. How is this even a thing?!! WTF

And next, up absurd scare mongering: “With Riley now gone, and reality setting in, this is dangerous territory for Oregon State.”

Ah yes, we are all totally clutching our pearls over here.

“Riley’s decision set up the perfect scenario to determine his value as OSU’s head coach: How does OSU do without him, and how does he do away from OSU??”

Actually we’re good, thanks. Sorry not sorry fans couldn’t accept mediocrity. LOLZ

  24. We have three 2* OL recruits and two 3* OL Recruits…wonder if Gary will evaluate the recruiting class and deem it acceptable or that it can be better…I feel bad if some of the recruits don’t get to keep their offers.

    What do you all think?

    • I’d bet most keep their offers unless they are clearly not fits for his system. Its late in the game and I doubt Anderson can fill more than about 10 spots with ‘his’ guys.

As long as he believes he can use/develop them he will likely keep them.

  25. I was so stoked by this hire that I popped my football donation cherry and pitched in what I could. I can see it now, me not screaming at the tv, “use that thing…. The fuckin, fuckin timeout”.

We’ve been subjected to such shitty coaching that I sometimes forget what they’re called

  26. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbx522V77NY

Highlights from the 2012 Utah vs. Utah St. game.

Offensively it looks like a bit of everything in there: spread read, triple option, power I, single back. Always 1-2 TEs. I like the balance and mix.

Defensively, attacking 3-4 that gets a lot of sacks. Blitzing from the 3-4 also means the safeties have to play more man-to-man defense than they did under Banker, so we’ll see if Strong can develop that side of his game(Or maybe move him to outside linebacker?).

The game tape looks good; kinda curious to know what went wrong this season for Wisconsin(those fans were IRATE losing to Northwestern).

  27. The pure fact that a WINNING Big 10 coach, seeing the OSU vacancy, calls the OSU AD and WANTS to come, means the old saw about OSU a dead end and a dissapated Riley is the best we can do, is and clearly was, HORSESHIT. Anyone who says that from now on, you just say… ANDERSEN!

  28. while we’re handing out thanks and kudos, I want to give a big THANK YOU to our leader here; Angry Beav himself. We was COMPLETELY right about Riley (as we saw in that post from the archive earlier today) and has consistently provided insight and verbal ammunition to fend off Schnell, Goe, Miller, Jaynes–that whole sorry crew. Nice job man. YOU DID IT!

    • And this is what I mean by tangible evidence. Maybe we’ll call it intangible tangible evidence. I truly believe, as stated earlier that without this site, Robinson and Riley would still be here.

I’ve seen a dramatic change in Pure Orange over year. I used to visit their site only and gave up, hadn’t looked until this year.

Imagine the free reign of uninformed Pollyism regarding Riley from the media nationwide without this site. We’ve already listed them…Goe all the way down.

This site made it OK for EVERYONE to voice displeasure about mediocrity in Beaver Country. From those who had been uncomfortable for a long time…to those who were just catching on.

Bob and Ray, and whomever else noticed. Former players, noticed. It’s so unfortunate that the voice of reason had to be a “thorn” from within but it had to be that way.

      I say again. (seems trite)

      Well done, Angry!

  29. Andersen won’t have to worry about a micromanaging AD here; he barely manages at all!

    /joke

Seriously, whoever made the men’s/women’s BBall and Football hires did an outstanding job.
