Have at it, doods.

I have some obligations this week and might be away, but if that’s the case I’ll still try to get a new thread up.

I just saw Hallice Cook transferred again. Too bad he didn’t just stay at OSU. Gotta wonder what is going on with that guy. There’s not much good football news out there. This was semi entertaining (as far as o-live goes at least) in seeing their interpretation of who stood out.

Interesting bit is that I thought I wasn’t high on Timmy and Yanni, so I went back and looked at my 2014 recruiting writeup and found this:

Yanni Demogerontas, OL — He actually looks good, but had no good offers. Am I missing something, or did 120 d1 schools? Needs to add 25lbs, ASAP.

So it looks like I did like him. I haven’t seen him since that film in 2014.

I’m not sold on Timmy Hernandez. It’s not that I dislike Hernandez — I’ve never seen him play. He just looks like a possession WR, and this program needs speed/game changers. I see Hernandez as a guy who moves the chains on 3rd downs, which is a great specialty, but not much more unless there’s a broken coverage.

The rest of the guys in the O-live article fit what I saw in their film, so they’re right on schedule as far as I’m concerned. Smith’s quick development is a bit of a surprise. He looked way undersized, and I thought he’d take until junior year. His speed must be making up for his size/strength issue.

In baseball news it’s pretty amazing they’re still ranked #11.

    • Would he lose another year? Too bad he left, I thought he would have been really good alongside GP2.

If I remember correctly, he left before CR was dismissed. Barton & Moreland were already gone and the handfull of seniors. We know what the cupboard looked like after that.

I wonder if Tinks tried to get him to reconsider, but it may have been too late by the time he was hired. I know I certainly didn’t think they would win 17 games that year. Of course we didn’t know what a player GP2 was at the time.

Oh, well, it is what it is. I’m excited for the new season!

    • Could OSU get him back? Sounds like he has finished his degree and is looking for a grad school. Anybody know the rules on whether a player could transfer back to their former school? Kid should’ve stayed at OSU, but I don’t blame him for leaving at the time as it didn’t look like CR was getting canned. Tinkle didn’t even have a chance to try and keep him as he was gone when WT was hired.

Any thoughts on the guy that just committed (Stacy)?

        • I wouldn’t put it past him. He’s a smart, goal-driven kid. The atmospheres at OSU and ISU are somewhat similar in terms of distractions. He spent the whole of 2014-15 rehabbing. He’s on a full ship. With summer terms and solid schoolwork, he could easily be walking this spring or summer.

I’ve not checked to see if it’s true. But it’s certainly plausible.

  1. A long way until signing day. Commitments in May are about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.

Smith has put on 30 lbs since arriving

    • In the past early commitments didn’t mean a whole lot. Times have changed and they do mean a lot now.

If the coaching staff is able to land a top recruit early, that recruit becomes a recruiter themselves. Other top players see that and in general, top players want to play with each other nowadays. It’s the LeBron effect. The top player who starts recruiting other players, won’t flip either.

  2. Cougs already have 4 verbals including a 3* QB from our backyard and our top WR target. Verbals may only be worth the paper they aren’t written on, but in terms of momentum and class building, the verbal commitments are very important in my opinion.

        • Look at the picture in the twitter feed (the comment about the roof). On the right side against the building it looks like food carts. Maybe not “redneck” but….something…it seems weird inside the stadium.

          • More a Portland thing than a redneck thing. Looks like they’re just trying to be trendy. As long as the food served is good, I don’t mind them. One of those little details that will get mentioned during tv broadcasts, press releases, etc..

          • As long as Williams doesn’t run into it on a pick-six, I’m good.

I’d like to see local vendors get licenses for carts if they are going to do that.

          • Mmmm… I’d start with carts for Baguette and Local Boyz…and maybe that bbq place out in Philomath that I can never remember the name of.

          • I don’t mind food carts, it just looks weird with the architecture. Modern styling with enclosed trailers parked on it doesn’t look good.
On the other hand a food cart area that is accessible from within the stadium would be cool. Like 8-10 food carts so it’s not just hot dogs/polish dog and such for the masses. Or out on the plaza or between gill and stadium.

          • I like the idea of food cars somewhere nearby the game…some may not, they may feel like it takes away from tailgating, OSU may feel it detracts from concessions…. I’d like the choices offered by food carts though.

          • And jack…..local boyz….yes yes yes. I haven’t eaten their in many years, loved that place. I’ve eaten at many Polynesian restaurants over the years, only some local spots on Maui compare.

          • OB, I think they would be contracted just like the concessions already in place. The school gets a cut of the profits or a flat rate or both, im not sure. But I do know people get tired of tailgating at late games. My brother brings a smoker and shows up about 5 hours before games to cook for friends and family. He gets home about 2 in the morning and only lives an hour away. Not that everyone wants to go all out like that but it gives people the option too skip cooking and hit up something other than hot dogs.

          • Yeah… the good news is that concessions at least rise to the level of opening a bag of sandwich rolls, a bag of brats and a pocket full of condiments. The bad news is that it’s only risen to the level of what you can do in the parking lot on a hibachi… at one-sixth the price.

          • Speaking of food offerings, as Blackbandits suggested, a foodcart offering within a short distance of the stadium would be nice. Would it be feasible to lay down a protective layer of playwood over a section of the turf practice fields near Truax on game day, and position some 15-20 food cart vendors out there? Is there any other unclaimed real-estate near the stadium where this would make sense? Maybe around the train track side of Gill?

Would be convenient to most people attending the game to get food before the gates open and could really improve the game day atmosphere. Biggest drawback would be the potential of damaging the field, and I suppose many people still prefer to bring/grill their own food when tailgating.

          • I was thinking the gluten free place with Sandy on the smoker. I remember the q-master’s name.

But I take it back. His is good. But the Oregon BBQ Co. in Albany is much better. And they slung it from a truck first.

          • In Philomath? News to me and I’ve been here 30 years. We don’t have a BBQ joint here and haven’t since stop n go was forced out by the prick shell station owner in 2014

          • Jack, that’s Eats and Treats. Good food, good people ta-boot. You’d never know their food is gluten free.

          • That’s it. Pretty good B&G. BBQ is better than the big chain BBQ roadhouse. And they have these butter rolls that I could buy by the dozen.

          • Holy shit! I had no idea they did bbq but I looked at their website and sure enough. We’ve had so many places come and go in that former philomath pharmacy building I stopped going after the sports bar closed down a few years back. The pizza place that was in there first had probably the worst pizza I ever tried. I’ll have to check out eats and treats now

  3. Back to the “Victory Through Valley” strip mall. Maybe the roof should be painted a matte white (less glare?) and “Oregon State University” painted on it in the “rebranded” font (which I like), with the Beaver logo? “OSU” and the logo? Some combination, as it may get some screen time during games. May not look so good if they stick with the current metal ribbed roof?

I’d like to see something on that space but not advertisements. And no, not tartan…

Then take down the “Oregon State University” sign above the scoreboard with the obvious/tacky support steel; its too small, gets lost in all the ads and video, and looks like an afterthought.

    • Yeah, with that shitty ribbed for nobody’s pleasure look, any text or image you paint on there will look amateurish and borderline unreadable.

They’ve said they’re planning on throwing a banner over it for a cheap, temporary improvement, I think I’m fine with that.

    • Whatever they do with it–leave it bare, put a banner over it, or any future where it structurally remains–it needs to be coated properly in order to make it fully efficient. And that would be the most heat reflective color.

You can now get a two-step coating to endure the life of the roof. And the cost can easily be justified by future maintenance and energy savings.

  4. Just saw Alex Forsyth, a legit prospect with offers from a ton of d1 schools, he was wearing a lot of Oregon state gear.

  5. Anyone watching the game? Max comes on for the ninth with Beavs up 4-3. Poor pitching so far, Church especially disappointing. Grenier with 2 RBi’s, maybe he is coming around, finally.
Seattle U is a decent team.

  6. With two down in the b11 Ice gets his fourth hit to double home Madrigal and win it.
The fatigue factor is surely in play for Ice this weekend, guess he would say that he can rest when he is 40 or 50.
5-4 Beavs vs a good team.
Huge series in Arizona this weekend, all on PAC12 starting 7pm Friday.

  7. Sebrina Ionescu is out. Down too ducks and dawgs. That sucks…..I guess. That fucking roof is screwing everything up.

    • The coaches stopped pursing her several months ago. Not going to say the specifics because we are talking about a young person, but it wasn’t a good fit and the coaches made the decision to part ways with her.

      • Appreciate the insight DB. I was disappointed to read that we weren’t in the running but knowing what you know, makes sense as to why we were cut. We had talent this year for sure but our team chemistry also helped get us to the Final Four. No need to mess with what works.

      • I don’t think the NCAA likes “pursing.” Interesting news, however. I thought the drama played out far too long – OSU wbb and Scott Rueck don’t need a primadonna. She’s quoted as saying she will decide in May – duh! she has to decide. The last day to sign is 18 May.

        • If that prima donna leads your team to the ncaa title, how much do you really care?

Definitely a blow to the program because they’ll have to face her twice a year.

I would guess she eliminated OSU because she waited so long, Rueck didn’t have the role she envisioned anymore. Had she committed in the early period, he would have recruited around her. Pivec is likely in the role she wants. UW could give her anything because they don’t play their bench.

Still would have signed her because it never hurts to add a top 5 talent. Most of the top womens teams are filled with type a players. It’s up to the coach to manage them.

        • I’ll be surprised if she doesn’t end up at Oregon. I think OSU’s chances would have been better if they hadn’t already signed Pivec.

  8. Story on O-live about the running back situation. Gina says Nall is “limited” in practice (he didn’t play in the spring game). Does anyone know if the limitation is just that GA wants to conserve his energy or reduce the probability of being hurt or is he rehabbing some injury that I don’t know about?

    • Yeah there is a short discussion about that back on the spring game thread. Seems like GA is saving him, instead of taking a chance at him getting hurt in practice.

      • It’s not necessarily bad news for UO. Kelly turned around and told his friends Tate Martell and Tyjon Lindsey(5*QB and 5*WR) they should commit to Oregon as a package deal.
Martell is currently an aTm commit, but likes Oregon. If you ever wanted to hate a duck player, Martell would make a good future candidate should he go there. He’s really talented and ultra cocky. A good fit for them.

        • Reading around on some recruiting sites it looks like the love is not mutual on Martell. I’m getting that it has to do with Frost not liking him maybe…..? Although he’s gone, does his scouting of Martell pull weight? Any way….who cares, fuck the ducks.

          • That Martell kid decomitted from aTm tonight. Then one of their coaches tweeted some messages out about the current generation and their lack of loyalty, flip flopping, blah blah blah, and then one of their other recruits, a 4*WR decided to decommit on the spot because he didnt like what he saw from that coach. Reality tv level drama going on down there

          • Was just going to post this. The coach made a stupid choice in tweeting anything back…..but he’s not wrong in his view. We’ll see were Martel ends up, but this is his second decommitment. He committed to Washington when he was 14…………he seems to be a head case. I kind of hope he goes to oregon, I think he will be like Manziel, only more of a psycho. That could be entertaining.

          • I dont think ether party is innocent in these things. Coaches screw over players all the time. Players screw over coaches/teams all the time.
In this case, it sounds like a&m was still recruiting another QB after telling Martell he was their guy. Maybe they were just covering their ass for the inevitable, but either way, the relationship wasnt working so its best for them to just both move on.
When your girlfriend breaks up with you, you dont look any better by calling her a slut when she moves on. Might make you feel better, but better to just let it go.

          • Who doesn’t like competition? If Martell is a cocky asshole, you’d think he’d welcome it. I like the whining from his reciever buddy who also decommited. Everyone needs a victim statues these days. If they are so pressured, they need to get off social media.

          • It all speaks to a lousy method for recruiting.

If you really want a kid, give him a grant-in-aid. Then we’ll see what you and your high and mighty coaching staff thinks about commitment.

    • Good handle… very good facilitator, especially in transition… very positive A/TO… good hops… great D and rebounding for his size… questions about perimeter shot, but he can shoot from the line. So that says S&C combined with putting up shots will make him a good or better perimeter shooter. Related to that, he needs to take and make more rubs and mid-range jumpers. He can keep his handle low and tight in traffic, but he does it a little too much instead of taking the higher percentage jumper.

If he buys in with his abilities and attitude on D (am told he chatters a lot), he could remind people of Lester.

  9. Former Beaver Naalii Robins got arrested for a probation violation. I don’t remember him getting in trouble in the first place? Wonder if it was something that got swept under the rug?

      • About eight months for proper rehab to get you back on the floor. Then you have to ease into conditioning for about a month before you can go full on. So he’s looking at about Thanksgiving for a conservative estimate if he rehabs properly, not too fast or slow.

Then there are some who believe another month of conditioning outside the game is warranted instead of getting work in actual games. That would put it at about the new year and league play. I see no reason to red shirt for missing one-third of a season. I understand the hesitation with some injuries. But he needs to get in the mix when he can.

It also reminds me of that stupid question they ask at hospitals and clinics:

On a scale of one to ten with ten being the worst, how does this pain rate compared to the worst you can imagine?

        Such a stupid question.

          • For all his faults, at least he would tell both sides of the aisle that their ideas, which are 99.999% the same ideas as the other side, are dumb.

And if the next SC justice is not chosen until his presidency we can rename our form of government the triumvirate of dumb.

          • I can hear him berating the Supreme Court for their dumbness and inability to negotiate while assuring them everything is “Fine! Just fine!” with his penis and his hot wife….

  10. Sorry, beavergopher, D1 has moved the Beavs projected post season placement from Minneapolis to #2 seed in angry’s backyard. You get the dirtbags instead. They also have Seattle as #4 vs leghumpers in Seattle, told ya they were a good team.

These projections are constantly in flux and could see a BIG change after the upcoming series with the cats. Cats playing their best ball of the season and Beavs still looking for pitching. Danny has it right with today’s piece on the importance of moving runners. Hoping for a sweep, won’t be surprised with a series loss.

Hoping for a sweep, yeah…….too much to expect; not too much to ask…….Mary Chapin Carpenter/Joe Diffie

  11. Don’t know what to expect for football this year…. The fantastic voyage of Collins…. Staff changes….. Off the field stuff…. Mediocre results in recruiting so far…. Granted, it wasn’t the most inspiring debut season for D Gary…..

  12. And FYI, I Don’t believe for one second that Pullman is “better than Corvallis” but truthfully I struggle to find another advantage Corvallis has on other Pac12 cities/venues. Besides academics of course! But trying to look at it from 17-19 yr old perspective may but .
