Thoughts are turning to Football and with today being the first day of camp lets move the discussion here.
An open practice is scheduled as part of Family Fun Day on Saturday, August 17 at Reser Stadium. It begins at 7:30 p.m. PT. Meanwhile, what are your hopes and dreams (nightmares) for camp and the season to follow?
As always, feel free to stray over to other Beavs topics; Luke seems to be settling in, no news yet on how Canham will fill the vacancy left by Yeskie, and WBB soon heads to Italy. Lots to look forward to.
GO BEAVS!
Fiiiiiiirrrrrrrssssst. Muthafukas!
If Smith and Lindgren are buying my wing T suggestion to get two backs on the field they’re keeping it under wraps. Smith recently said we “might” see some two back but, “only one can carry the ball at a time” and Lindgren sees value in keeping them fresh. Coach talk to fake out the opposition? I can only dream!
And, didja see where 247Sports rates the Beavs football facilities #23? Ahead of Texas Tech and Florida and just behind our “where’s the ball” buddies at Arkansas.
You also have to have 2 backs who can block if you’re going to take someone else off the field.
I’m not ready for daily camp updates yet. Too much summer left to enjoy.
Did see Nick Dash at the O said JC transfer Nahshon Wright had one of the highlight plays of the day on defense. Good to hear, CB is the defensive position group I’m most worried about.
GoBeavs
I don’t give a shit unless there’s popsicles and water balloons.
If you aren’t following Eggers you are missing some good stuff. After several quiet days he is up with articles on: Football offense, Football defense, Canham’s start, and Andy Jenkins move to Fullerton.
Here’s the link to the Canham piece, it’s worth your time (as are the other three):
https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/435034-345533-what-canham-can-do-and-is-doing-atop-osu-baseball-program
He says don’t expect to see Kevin Abel pitch next season, or ever again for the Beavs, damn.
Pretty surprising that Jake Mulholland wasn’t drafted and will be back next year. If Verburg is healthy then we should still have a good pitching staff for 2020.
Great that Fehmel is playing pro ball. I see he pitched one inning yesterday in the AZ rookie league, no hits, 8 pitches.
My dream scenario is that we hear a lot of good shit about the CB’s so I don’t have to worry that we’ll have a terrible pass defense.
My nightmare scenario is offensive linemen getting hurt. We really, really don’t have enough depth there to cover even one starter getting hurt. Luck o’ da beavs requires that we’ll probably have two suffer at least half season injuries though.
If their cleatmaker isn’t Nike, they might escape foot/ankle/leg/hamstring injuries.
Sounds like we may have picked up another kicker for fall competition. Jake Scarton from Pitt. I have no other info at this point.
https://twitter.com/BobGreenburg/status/1157382029622874114?s=19
Spoke briefly with someone who knows of the kid. Sounds like he was backing up a pretty good kicker the last year and wasn’t likely to take over the starting spot this year.
Was a walkon, so I think he would be eligible to play immediately? Someone else may need to check to make sure that’s correct. I think walk-ons are free to transfer without sitting out.
Was supposedly a pretty good kicker in highschool, although his longest make was 46 yards. Small sample size though
Would be a redshirt Sophomore this season. Also has a younger brother, Sam, who is a freshman kicker on Pitt’s roster currently.
and the beaverblitz crew are leeches…
Some here may be interested to know that Choukair is no longer on the roster.
Nope, I’m wrong. Choukair is still there. They just have him listed as a PK rather than a K, so when you sort, he doesn’t show up next to Everett Hayes.
Also strange they have Nelson listed as a Punter. I know he punted some in HS, but always thought of him as a kicker.
That was cruel.
Talk about a boner killer
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/rockies/2019/08/02/mlb-nathan-patterson-fan-96-mph-signs-athletics/1898405001/
Beavs should have kicking booth.
Nelson went 3 for 3 in practice today according the ore-garbage-ian… good sign imo… glad to hear he’s not punting
Plus it sounds like the DB’s are holding their own… It’s sad to think knocking down passes sounds like progress
Hopeful at the moment for a surprise season. I called the Beaver win over then No.1 USC Trojans during Jaquizz Roger’s first year. Let’s see what happens. I’m predicting 7-5 and a medium level bowl. Come on Guys!!!!!!!!
I’m hopeful too. But, word that Morris was on a bike today and that Eldridge wasn’t on the field is not encouraging. Is Morris gonna be the Kevin Abel of the FB team?
Bradford too. I have a feeling that guy isn’t going to play this year. Those foot injuries seem to never heal.
Has Whittley seen the field yet?
No sources other than the video posted on Nicebeaver feed up top showing whittley going to practice and looking sweaty at the end.
Now that Yeskie has moved on to Arizona, no one has really talked about the # of serious pitching injuries the Beavers staff experienced under Yeskie. Don’t get me wrong, NY is a great coach, but I’ve often wondered why were so many pitchers going down with serious arm issues what seemed like every year. Was it due to a lack of pitching mechanics, inadequate preparation in strength and conditioning, throwing pitchers too long and too many pitches, or was it just bad luck. I’d like to think it was just bad luck but it seemed to happen all too often which made me think it was more than a coincidence. I guess we’ll never know but if the AZ staff starts having similar arm injuries, then it could be related to the NY’s approach to pitching for all the reason’s just previously mentioned. Plus, we’ll see what the next pitching coach brings to the table and whether or not the same kinds of injuries continue to occur with the same frequency or not. Just kind of thinking about this in the aftermath of NY leaving for AZ. Thoughts?
Or, have kids been over-used in HS, or brought back too soon from TJ surgery?????
Along that same line, there has been a lot said about the value of playing several sports; does the focus nowadays on teenagers playing a single sport year round contribute to these pitchers problems?
It would take a serious study of the differences between teams to indict or clear Yeskie. Gotta think a grad student somewhere has done this analysis.
Back to a multi sport background, I particularly like seeing FB players who have had wrestling experience! And Mikayla Pivec’s javelin background may have done her some good!
While it does seem Oregon State has been hit harder than most with elbow injuries I think there are too many variables involved to pinpoint the cause. Yeskie did address this last May.
https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/429475-337412-oregon-state-pitching-deals-with-injuries
too many throws in the bullpen. Some guys pitched a whole game’s worth of warm-ups out there.
My cousin had to have his TJ surgery between his Jr/Sr years in HS.
And he was pitching pretty much year-round with all of the offseason traveling teams and pitching camps and pitching training facilities, in addition to his regular HS pitching routine.
I think it’s just a matter of throwing a ball repeatedly at 90+ mph and with torque, something’s eventually going to give out.
Best way to avoid having to get TJ surgery is to avoid pitching entirely
Colby Covington the welterweight UFC interim title holder will get a shot at the undisputed title now after his win today. For those who don’t know he is an OSU wrestler and alum. He always gives shout outs to OSU. For those that do know of him, yes his shtick is just that a shtick. He’s a troll but actually a nice guy IRL, it’s all marketing.
https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2019/8/1/20749708/ufc-trump-brothers-will-be-cageside-for-colby-covington-vs-robbie-lawler-mma-news
2020 baseball commit Hunter Haas is now committed to ASU. A family friend said Canham was impressive during a recent home visit but the kid hadn’t heard from OSU much of late and had a change of heart.

https://youtu.be/pcCsZUyzjuE Covington interview
So Reichner is injured again? Nick Daschel makes it sound like he had to be helped off the field with a lower leg injury. Not a position the Beavs cam afford to lose depth at
In possibly related news, the Beavs appear poised to try and poach another player from Hawaii. No inside knowledge to share as of yet, but keep an eye on Gabriel Iniguez(class of 2019 DE)
Not sure if he just never signed with Hawaii, or what. But will find out more tomorrow, hopefully.
Looks like Iniguez was a greyshirt for Hawaii, so he’s technically not under scholarship and could potentially make it onto OSU roster thos season, if things work out.
Anybody know what’s up with Aidan Willard? Keep reading he’s not at practice yet. If he’s gone, would open up a scholarship.
Huh, not a big splash I was hoping for.
Discouraging to hear about so many injuries when we have had hardly and contact yet. We thought these guys worked the hardest they ever had this past summer to get into great shape.
Shit happens….
Heard from a friend in Tualatin that John Miller might not qualify academically, could be the reason for low offer sheet
He’s got a full school year so hopefully he figures his shit out.
Some pros and cons for starting Luton: More experience, perhaps a better arm and maybe a better familiarity with receivers to start the season. However, slower and less shifty than a turtle, injury prone and will be gone in 3-4 months.
Pros and cons for starting Gebbia: Never started a college game, shorter and maybe can’t see the field as well, and perhaps less favored by some returning receivers. However, much longer future, seems to be nearly equal to Luton right now and can run some, and can start fresh without the baggage of two horrible losing seasons.
Conclusion, let the future begin. Go Gebbia
Good points. Although the recent reports from coaching staff indicated they were impressed with Luton’s ability to scramble and had no mention of that for Gebbia. Luton, while not the definition of shifty, before the injury the prior season was surprisingly fast. With the hurt ankle AND door he looked more like Mannion.
Gebbia’s longest run in high school was 10 yards. He is not more mobile than Luton.
https://www.maxpreps.com/m/athlete/tristan-gebbia/7j6NNWh5EeOzMAAmVebBJg/football/stats.htm
He looked mobile in Nebraska’s spring game when he was still there.
Nick Daschel has confirmed (again) that Kicker Jake Scarton has transferred from Pitt to OSU. Will be available immediately because he was a walk on at Pitt. Will be a redshirt Sophomore.
Glad to see we’re not set on just keeping Choukair as the starter this season.
The internet can be great, sometimes. Well played
https://twitter.com/PaulLeeTicks/status/1158433962563235840?s=19
https://twitter.com/kerryeggers/status/1158178774464135168 brown is enrolled,
Torn ACL for Reichner. That sucks
Ug. That sucks.
As always, due to lack of depth, our season is over before it starts.
Hyperbole, but not far off.
Don’t look now but those sucky Mets are en fuego winning 11 of 12. Only 2 back in the wild card race.
Can they keep it up or is it because they’ve been beating up on the sisters of the poor?
Those 11 wins have been against the Pirates, Marlins, White Sox and Padres.
And, in other news, a missing person report may have been filed for our hero, angry. Anyone seen or heard from him lately? Out lookin’ for Jack? Gotta wonder.
Hmmm, does a@a have an alibi?
A) Jack hunted him down and threw him into a vat of soap.
B) Ran off for a weekend sex romp with Mama Machado.
B
Bingo, I thought I’d heard squeals of delight from the Wilsonville/Tualatin area!
C) Got caught and diced up as the latest ingredient for that Bircher mix
That would at least give it some flavor.
Way to salty.
Machado was kinda cute in her prime. Sounds fun.
The guy who took Lundeberg’s spot at the GT is up with a couple articles. Mostly re-hash of the recent injury report.
But there is this, he says Morris got:
a pair of specialized cleat insoles that helped Morris change his running stride and resolve some biomechanical deficiencies that were causing him to put unnecessary stress on the foot bones.
Tibesar is quoted: “He’s got to be healthy enough to get out there and practice — we’re waiting for the trainers to let us know when he’s good to go,” Tibesar said. “I haven’t seen him get through more than three or four practices. We’re really hoping he can be healthy but you’ve got to be out there to keep getting better.”
More in the piece.
https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-morris-hopes-to-have-solved-foot-issues/article_5a4b7350-ef4c-5760-b3c3-4c4b81097fea.html
With being forced by contract to wear Nike shitty ballet slippers and the constant “lower leg” injuries why wouldn’t *every* player on the team have custom insoles? It’s obviously an option, why wait until they break their foot?
Random : I assume Morris played high school – 4 years – football without a broken foot. How binding is the contract with Nike – shoes have to say Nike or have a swoosh and be seen on television? Can there be a clinical trial with players (starting with the OL) wearing Nike cleats being the placebo and others being expertly outfitted by 2-3 different shoemakers?
There are some uniform continuity rules, but I’m not exactly sure who is enforcing them (ncaa, pac12, nike). I would assume nike more then the others but who knows.
I’ve heard of athletes wearing a brand with a swoosh glued on/ painted on etc but I’m guessing that would be hard to do in football with all the continuity like @BlackBandits mentioned.
This topic came up a little back when Zion Williamson had a nike shoe fall apart in a game this past season. Some people online showed the contract language between nike and duke which basically said, if a doctor can state nike shoes are causing a duke athlete injury issues(or will cause issues down the road) then nike will be required to furnish alternative footwear for the athlete. But, nike will also have the ability to black out or hide any logos from a competitor if the replacement footwear comes from another brand.
Without the doctor recommendation, all duke athletes have to wear nike shoes.
I’d imagine most schools have a similar clause in their apparel contracts with nike.
Time to start a letter writing campaign to Doc Auk
Joey Wong returns
https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/baseball/osu-baseball-wong-returns-as-an-undergrad-assistant-coach/article_907ee163-1a7c-54c8-b7e1-0ff00a31fe15.html
a few years ago I randomly found some live baseball on the tube, middle of the night in probably January or February, it was the Australian league and there was Joey W playing, he was the star of the team from Perth
Looks like the coaching staff will be all former players. Nice I guess but gigantic case of nepotism going on here. Hopefully it all works.
I’m concerned about that nepotism too. Hopefully the hire to replace Yeskie will be a home run whether or not he(she?) has prior connection to OSU.
I understand Canham is keeping in close touch with Casey; a good thing.
Colletto appears to be impressing at both LB and QB. For his sake I hope they pick a position for him soon.
Per Daschel:
Colletto dons a quarterback jersey: Jack Colletto made his first appearance in camp as a quarterback after drilling with the linebackers the first four practices. Colletto didn’t show any rust, as he stepped in and, on his first pass during 7-on-7, zinged a 15-yard completion to Aaron Short. Colletto made several nice throws and runs during the two-hour practice.
Choker quote from the boregonian…..
“My goal is to play at the next level, and nothing is going to be handed to you.”
I about fell out of my chair. I’d rate the chances of that happening at slim to none.
He could play at the next level as a professional soccer goalie. He’s demonstrated an uncanny ability to prevent kicked balls from scoring.
Here’s hoping for a Serna style turnaround, but that will be an uphill battle. Serna only had that one really bad game at LSU, didn’t he? Something major is gonna have to click.
Somewhere is a quote about the new transfer kicker, kicking a field goal at the end of a 2 minute drill over the net on the practice field. It was only 33 yards or so but still that’s some height.
Chokair does that all the time. Only the net is the warmup one on the sideline.
Unfortunately he’s nothing like Serna.
How was the “Beaver Blitz” with Mama M?
Oh you know it was a pretty neat deal.
Hi guys… I figure some of you may have some ideas on this. A friend of mine, who is a Cal Poly grad, wants to set up a tailgate for fellow alums, family friends etc. for their game on 9-14.
Where should I suggest he look to park a big pick-up and set up BBQ, ice chests, chairs etc, for about 20-25 people? I doubt there will be a huge crowd so I’m wondering if the parking at Reser will work? Thanks
Unless you have a donor pass to park in the Reser lots, or know someone who does (or buy one online at Stubhub) your best bet is one of the public pay lots off 30th, north of the new Forestry building.
Good day for birchers with gold up over $1500/oz and silver over $17.
Rates pretty much have to go lower at this point. That means the run may continue.
Yep. Gold to the moon. The world is over.
Bircher or realist? Jack was a big central bank apologist. They caused this.
Conspiracy theory ! The gov keeps silver artificially low and gold artificially high because if the were shown in their true value it would really fuck up the economy. I read that shit online do it’s gotta be true!
Gold and silver are both low because people are stupid and don’t buy it for currency hedge.
The problem with gold and silver bugs is they never complain gold is manipulated when it’s up $100 a day.
Yeah, Comex gold doesn’t exist in those quantities. That’s about the only truth to any of it. But that’s true of any and every derivative and is simply the nature of derivatives.
From photo’s I’ve seen of players and the amount of weight gained and lost in the off season. I see a 3 maybe 4 win season this year. I really feel this team is about 2-3 years away from where this thing really needs to be in regards to competing for the Pac-12 title.
With that said, what I like in regards to what is happening to the overall feel of the team is continuity between coaches. It appears the offensive and defensive coaches actually work/talk together rather than, “You’re defense and I’m offense. You do your job, I’ll do mine.” Also, from what the writers are saying, Luton and Gebbia are both getting closer to 1a(Luton) and 1b(Gebbia). I honestly feel we will have better QB play, but as it is every year, it all comes down to the OL play that will determine how the offense fares from 2018 to 2019. Defensively, I just want to see better DL, LB, and CB play. If we can just get 2-3 more 3 and outs than we did last year per game, that would make the world of difference for this team. Or even holding teams to field goals.
Well, somebody finally said it! Photo caption from the GT:
“Oregon State’s Mikayla Pivec…and Oregon’s Sabrina Ionescu will lead their respective teams into the Civil War women’s basketball series between Jan. 23 and Jan. 26, 2020, the Pac-12 announced on Wednesday.
For so long Destiny has been the lead story for most writers, it is gonna be very interesting to see how much better acclimated to Rueck’s system she becomes in her second season. Interesting, and KEY along with Kat to the W/L for this team. But, bottom line, Mikayla is the sparkplug for this group.

Conforto now 3rd Met ever to have 100 HR’s in first 5 seasons. So disappointing
Hey football fans….How about a 9:30 am kickoff….saw this in the Oregonian today…….
Players, others alarmed about possibility of 9 a.m. kickoffs
Commissioner’s trial balloon all but shot down
by James Crepea
The Oregonian/OregonLive EUGENE — Troy Dye’s willingness to tackle might have finally found a limit: the proposed 9 a.m. games in the Pac-12.
To say the Oregon linebacker is not keen on the idea of waking up before the sun rises to play football is a gross understatement.
“If we played at 9 a.m. it would really be a crazy, crazy mess to be honest,” said Dye, Oregon’s leading tackler in each of the last three seasons. “Because you got to think, you got to have your pregame meal at least three to four hours before your game. So if the pregame meal is three to four hours before the game that’s a 5 a.m.-6 a.m. pregame meal, like, Jesus Christ. So what time do I have to wake up? 4 o’clock. So what time do I go to bed the day before that? 6:30-7 (p.m.). All right, then I just missed everything the day before, because we’re West Coast so everything is already behind.
“But I mean, I don’t think it’ll happen. I think they should just play more 11 o’clock, 12 o’clock games. 9 o’clock is just absurd. But hey, if it makes money, it makes money, man.”
In the days since Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott floated the idea of 9 a.m. kickoffs during the conference’s Media Day, most of the feedback from coaches, players and fans within the conference has been negative, though there are some supporters.
On one hand, the Pac-12 is trying to get more exposure in the Eastern and Central time zones, where over 70 percent of the U.S. population resides, and earlier local kickoff times would put some games in a television window with a much larger audience than the night games.
Conversely, earlier games would be a logistical challenge to coaches and players, particularly those traveling, who would need to get up extremely early to play, as Dye noted, as well as fans who drive significant distances to stadiums in locations like Eugene, Corvallis, Tucson, Boulder and Pullman.
Oregon coach Mario Cristobal was diplomatic in his response but is clearly not thrilled by the concept.
“It’s a challenge,” Cristobal said. “I think it’s interesting. I don’t judge until it’s done. You might say, ‘Hey I’ll play them at home; make somebody come here and we’ll play at 9 a.m.’ It’s very new. It’s uncharted waters. Probably a little bit difficult, but I’m no one to judge and I’ll hold judgment on that. That is a 5 a.m. pregame meal now. I’m going to invite all of you (media) for that one.”
For the sake of argument, if the Pac-12 were to play select 9 a.m. games this season, with the first three weeks and a select few other game
times already set, it would seemingly make the most practical and logistical sense to do so after Daylight Saving Time ends (Nov. 3).
That would leave four weeks to attempt to have every Pac-12 team play one game at 9 a.m., assuming the concept of fairness is part of this conversation. And if the conference were to only play those games when both teams are coming off bye weeks so as to allow for all players and coaches more time to adjust, 10 of the 12 conference teams could play early games.
In this hypothetical scenario, potential 9 a.m. games would be USC at Arizona State and Washington State at Cal Nov. 9, Arizona at Oregon and UCLA at Utah Nov. 16 and Washington at Colorado Nov. 23. Neither Stanford or Oregon State play a Saturday game in which both they and their opponent are coming off a bye week this season. However, OSU’s first bye week comes before hosting Stanford Sept. 28.
Of course, there are more questions than answers at this point and plenty of local push-back. Colorado athletic director Rick George said he could “almost guarantee” the Buffaloes would not be playing any early home games this season, making the aforementioned scenario moot. Scott also could have been floating a trial balloon.
jcrepea@oregonian.com
You lost me at 3rd Met ever…
But 20hr a season in the modern age. That impresses you? Okay, cool story, bro.
“Only 5 @Mets have recorded three-straight seasons of 25+ home runs:
Darryl Strawberry
Mike Piazza
David Wright
Carlos Beltran
Michael Conforto”
That’s decent company
It is but those were different eras. There are more home runs in the past four years than any period in history. Not the same game (or ball).
David Wright is the most modern of those guys, and he was a much better hitter overall.
There sure doesn’t seem to be much media coverage of fall camp this year. Gress and Daschel appear to be the only writers covering camp and it’s usually a small write up pretty late in the evening.
No news is good news?
I guess it was Lundeberg’s turn to provide the update tonight
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2019/08/oregon-state-beavers-linebackers-showing-promise-in-fall-camp.html
“Linebackers improve when not doing defensive line’s job.”
Fixed the title for him.
Jorge Reyes joins Luke Heimlich on the staff of the Tecos; border beavers?
F_nemac, where u at? Know anything about “occupying a foreign position”?
(sounds like something angry may have tried with mama m).
https://www.lmtonline.com/sports/article/Tecos-struggle-in-series-opener-against-Saltillo-14286112.php
lol, i got nothing,
Remember when I said to buy gold when it was at like $1350?
Today I booked 300% on mining stocks (options) that I bought back then. Gold is going much higher over the next five years. I hope I get another shot on a dip to buy more options.
Well, I didn’t buy any gold but I did buy a solid brass tail stop and a Wilkinson roller bridge for that Epi Dot I bought. Top wrapped the strings and it plays 100% better. Action is low and slinky. Got em in chrome and swapped in a spare set of Gibson tulip head tuners and some silver top hats I had sitting around. Gave it some color, the all black was bugging me.
Sounds awesome and what needs to be done to those.
I sent you an email letting you know I could get a big discount on those parts, but I’m not sure you ever got it.
Did you send it to my work email?
I sent it to your hotmail associated with this account ^
Ah, yeah I don’t check that one very often. Send it to my work Gmail account that you sent the last ones to.
I bought this round of parts from GFS, the bridge was a Wilkinson but the brass tail stop was theirs and the quality was good. I also threw some of their parts at a Squier ’51 I picked up. I installed their crunchy rails humbucker and their 10k little killer single coil size humbucker. Haven’t been able to play them loud yet but the initial sounds are pretty good.
Ah okay. I wrote you at the gmail.
Anybody remember Jason Heide from the Eddie Payne years at OSU, on the MBB team?
Or Sissel Pierce, who played for the WBB team during the same time?
Well, they got married and have a kid who plays HS basketball. Sela Heide. She’s a 6’8″ post up in Washington at Mount Si.
Somebody get Scott Rueck to take a look.
Oh wow! That makes me feel old. I had some classes with Jason Heide.
Would hope the staff already has. The problem is we’re full on post players with AA, Trish, Jones, Kennedy, and the Czech girl. If we can land Daniels, even more full. Says a lot about the program to be able to pass on this kind of player. 4 years ago Rueck is all over her.
I like what the coaching staff is doing at the tight end position. This offense should be able to move the chains consistently and give the defense enough time to rest and discuss adjustments.
Fun fact: OSU averaged the 6th most number offensive snaps per game last season. Ducks were 49th.
#YangGang
To be fair, if your defense gives up a touchdown every three plays, your offense is going to get a lot of snaps.
What? You dont like the ground breaking three-and-in defense?
As much as I loved watching other teams score at will, I’m hoping that we bring that number down.
It will be good for my liver, anyway.
Rich Dorman is the new pitching coach
https://osubeavers.com/news/2019/8/9/baseball-rich-dorman-named-oregon-states-pitching-coach.aspx
Oh wow, this is big news. Any quick takes on if this is good or bad? Hopefully now that we’ve got the staff put together we can turn our attention back to recruiting and keeping the players together.
It sounds like he’s been pretty successful wherever he’s been according to his resume. Plus, the comment of keeping the players together….the Beavers have only lost two recruits during this transition and that’s speaks very highly of the reputation the Beavers have built as a blue-blood, elite CBB program.
The only question will be can he recruit at this level? Yeskie was a pretty good recruiter.
Getting talent in is worth more than coaching in this era.
That’s why I’m so glad Bailey is still on the staff and why I’m happy to see Casey sticking around. That helps give us a recruiting edge.
Conforto got an RBI single now I need to hear how he’s Wade Boggs and Babe Ruth all in one.
I hope he stays warm because the Mets are on quite a run.
So Conforto can shotgun a keg is what you’re saying?
Why do you bang on Conforto so much. You ever hit a 95+ mph for a single, double, triple or HR? If it was that easy to do, we’d all be MLBers.
Yes I have.
But to think you have to do something to criticize it is flawed logic.
If Conforto is stepping up his game I’ll note it when confirmed. Right now it’s just a nice streak.
Hes egging on A@A not banging on Conforto. And he’ll get a pavlovian response soon enough.
Edit: you meanie, I just thought you were trolling the troll.
Conforto is fine he’s just disappointing for his pedigree, draft position, etc.
On a nice run lately, though, and hope he keeps it up for my amazin’s
Yup, he’s gone on streaks before. Long term consistency is what I would like to see. He’s a good player, not great yet.
^ Yep. He’s not that young anymore, either. He’s like 80% through his age 26 season, so in baseball terms he’s almost 27. People act like he’s 21.
Hey McKalk how about these Mets?
I know, I was skeptical because they beat up on bad teams, but these two come from behind wins against the Nats were impressive.
Stroman is a pretty crappy pitcher, but he’s added a feisty jolt to the dugout.
He is pushing top 40 for OPS. I still think it was a mistake to ever call him a disappointment. I think Those kinds of stats are within a range of what you hope for from the number 10 pick. Now if they gave him a 300 million dollar contract then yeah those would be disappointing numbers. Be interesting to see what kind of money he gets.
Any reports of surprises who are performing well in camp?
Under 3 weeks now until kickoff….crazy how fast this season has approached.
JC transfer Nashon Wright has been making plays, Luton and Gebbia have been good. Isaac Garcia has been doing some things as well. Golly!
Garcia still exists? That guy has been enrolled and unenrolled 100xs.
Getting reports that the team has a ton of work to do pretty much across the board and lots of high profile player regression. This appears to be a 3-4 win team max with somewhere more along the lines of the Vegas under very probable. That #1 worst power 5 school ranking certainly doesn’t help recruiting right now we need a boost! Thinking about potential of some freshman and transfers could be intriguing, but it means nothing unless they all can #1 stay eligible and #2 actually be productive on the field. Not as easy as it sounds! In 5 years beaver football under Smith will either be beginning to trend towards consistent .500 football or will be sunk into the lowest levels of all, even below the current abyss of relevancy. I just don’t see this team breaking through the Mendoza line in the short term, (next 2-3 seasons) sadly.
High profile player regression? Care to elaborate any specifics?
Weird… Most reports are saying they look shaper and better, where are you getting your news?
The Eugene Harold I’m guessing. Another duck fan worrying too much about the best university in the state. Oh yes we suck at football but we kick your ass at everything else.
Sharper *
Must be a lonely Saturday in eugene
Why would high profile players all regress? That makes no sense.
I’m going to be going through all the Coach Smith videos on YouTube right now to try to get a feel for things so far.
Another duck honk
OK mr beaver fan. Thanks for stopping by. Say hi to the fellow duck trolls on oregonlive.
Watching the videos now. Aidan Willard not in camp. I think I had him rated a 1 star and wasted scholie. Good to hear.
No loss there. He always seemed like one of those guys they offered to get an in with another player.
I think Willard missed the first week of practice but was in attemdance for week 2
Oh, that sucks.
I think he got an offer because GA valued running ability above all else in QB’s. Every GA QB recruit switched position at some point in their career.
Yep.
If memory serves, I believe Willard was the 7 on 7 qb for that group of So Cal kids (Hodgins, Manning Jr., Cotton, etc…) and he got injured before his senior year, so there was very little film. He got offered after a beaver camp, and maybe by the recommendation of some of his 7 on 7 teammates.
I think we’ve seen by now GA don’t know QB’s.
GA was big on switching positions………j

Jorge Reyes – mentioned at the end of the article – fairly common Hispanic name but . . .

same guy?
Same guy, as posted here on the 7th:
Jorge Reyes joins Luke Heimlich on the staff of the Tecos; border beavers?
F_nemac, where u at? Know anything about “occupying a foreign position”?

Did he ever regain his hearing?
“He was the Most Outstanding Player in the 2007 College World Series for the Oregon State Beavers””
JERMER JEFFERSEN IS A DARK HORSE HEISMAN CANDIDATE HE IS THE BEST RB IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL NATION AND YOU WILL SEE SOON AS HE TAKES OVER IN THE 4TH QUATER AFTER ALL THAT POUNDING STILL UNSTOPPABLE AND HOW ABOUT ARTIE P AND MG DAWGS?!! NOW YOU ARE TALKIN’!!!!
NOW YOU ARE YELLING!!!
Crazy story: went to buy a property today, and the guy is wearing a Beavs hat. I happened to wear a Beavs shirt today…never do. We wind up talking for an hour and hitting it off. Now he wants to sell it to me and not mess with any other buyers, even though he’s getting better offers. Under market price negotiated. Put two Beavs on it.

Anyone got updates after Saturday’s scrimmage?
Here’s five minutes with niner himself. He seems pretty comfortable with the media, no really big news as far as I can tell.
Several guys not yet going full bore, most concerning to me is Eldridge and Morris, although Smith doesn’t let on that he is concerned.

Thanks!
Rutschman has been struggling with the bat in A- league. Maybe still not over the mono? Maybe he just finishes out the season in short season A league.
Here’s all he did on Saturday night
https://twitter.com/IronBirds/status/1160351856641683457
Maybe he is only good when teams put runners on so he can be clutch. I think he will settle in but there is no denying the early numbers aren’t looking good at all.
Was looking into tickets for the OkState game. Tons of tickets available on the secondary market for pretty cheap. $35 covers tickets and fees for quite a few of the upper deck sections and south endzone. That’s cheaper than the run of the mill Pac12 home game.
Not a good sign for attendance considering it’s the biggest noncon P5 home game we’ve had since Wisconsin in 2012.
Plus students won’t be in town.
Will be really hard to convince Barnes we need to upgrade the stadium when nobody shows up for a big matchup like this. Being a Friday of Labor Day weekend doesn’t help. Traffic is going to be terrible on I-5.
Hope they get aggressive with their pricing as we get closer to game day, and start offering 2 for 1 deals to encourage better attendance.
Not sure why people don’t want to see that game. OSU is guaranteed to win.
They won’t drop prices. The issue for attendance is the product on the field combined with it being a Friday on a holiday weekend.
I think Barnes mentioned in his last interview, if they do rebuild the old side, it won’t be a mirror of the new side.
They should complete the lower bowl around the stadium, then the second deck on the old side will be small with a bunch of suites. Look at how wsu Martin stadium did it. That seems like the best way to go. Keep capacity around 42k.
The Labor Day weekend game is always going to be a flop. They should play PSU in Portland or something like that, and then play the big non-con the week after.
That’s nice, I looked a month ago and they were spendy… Wins go up, attendance follows. Going to try and make it now.
I don’t even mind spending some bucks on going to a game, but I refuse to go when we are a 20 point dog in our own fucking stadium.
Those 8 pm starts are awesome as well. Can’t wait until they start with the 8 am kick offs. That will help. /s
I would offer to make a personal appearance and sign autographs before and after the game. I would probably pull in another 10-15,000 fans. Who should I call? Dutch Baughman never returns my calls.
PS: I would be willing to donate my usual appearance fee.
How extremely generous of you!
Not sure how much Jordan Britton factored into the pitching rotation next season, but he has grad transfered to Boise st today. So i guess he will be even less of a factor.
It is depressing this season to compare the daily Beaver/Duck articles in the Oregonian’s Oregon Live, and our Beaversedge link v. their Duck Sports Authority. The Ducks regularly have exciting new stories about recruits that are high on their program, and tout the interest of highly rated national recruits that have them in their top tier. They “quack” frequently when they land 4 star, even ocassionally5 star football and basketball players (today it is announced they landed a 5 star basketball center), while we generally get 2and 3 stars. To me I am reading great enthusiasm in Eugene while here it’s repeat stories two or three days old that are boring. Several of our targeted recruits now seem to be wavering (Latrell Bangston and Jake Overman}.Oregon to me is light years ahead of us in marketing their program. Our marketing just is pathetic compared to theirs.
Obvious duck douche is obvious.
Is that all?
Thankfully Oregon State is still light years ahead of NikeU in academics. An education from there is just pathetic compared to “ours.”
Wear that green and piss proudly, rickydoodoo.
Sad your shitty ducks couldn’t beat the Beavs in any sport except football this year?
And here you are threatened by OSU’s blue collar approach to sports. All of that 4 star talent over the last ten years and yet the Ducks have maybe one Rose bowl and bowl flops to show for it — a 14-18 bowl record with many blow outs, still can’t compete with the big boys. The ducks are the Jamarcus Russell (or would that be Akili Smith) of college football — so much potential lossed on being able to throw fifty yarders on your knees — looks great, sounds impressive, but no heart or guts to finish the deal!
I still think about that Seattle Bowl where the DE for Wake Forest had like 5 QB sacks on a broken leg vs the ducks. Good times.
Of course it’s likely we’ll see at least two guys as QB this season, anyone else pretty sure Luton is gonna be the first chosen?
This piece from the GT regarding the TE position reinforces that thought:
“I think he’s been excited about that and him and (quarterback) Jake (Luton) seem to have a real good timing and so it’s been fun to watch him.”
The article focus is on Togiai and the rest of the TE’s, Lindgren says, “we’ve implemented some concepts now that he’s 100 percent healthy that are featuring the tight end position in the pass game…”
Any chance we’ll see effective use of a 2TE set?
Whadaya think?
https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-versatile-tight-end-group-looks-to-make-bigger/article_9bcdf240-e379-54cc-988b-3ad4de56b412.html
REMINDER: OPEN PRACTICE AT RESER THIS SATURDAY 7:30pm
**ALSO** AT 6PM TONIGHT BIG JIM, et al, will preview the upcoming FB season over Beaver Sports Radio Network. Live from Spirit Mountain.
Togiai seems like he has been around for ten years.
Hmmm, walk on tryouts for FB set for Sept 12. Too little, too late (Nate) emphasis on kickers?? Who knows. Keep those coaches busy, fly home from Hawaii and overlook Cal Poly to watch walkons?
https://osubeavers.com/news/2019/8/14/football-walk-on-tryout-information.aspx?path=football
Walkons can’t join the team until after Fall Camp, unless they were given preferred status.
I think we’ll see both QBs due to injuries. Hopefully this competition is like Mannion vs Vaz where there wasn’t much drop off to the backup.
Anyone listen to the season preview tonight?
I missed some of the beginning, here’s what I got – mostly from comments of BIG JIM:
*The panel is expecting significant contributions from Addison Gumbs and Avery Roberts. I heard no mention of David Morris.
*Brandon Kipper has added “good” weight, was a national level wrestler in HS and will help the OL be better than last season.
*Some of the OL that graduated would have trouble making the first team this year.
*Musgrave caught BIG JIM’s eye, said he looks like a Stanford TE and can split out.
*Tyjon Lindsey reminds JIM of James Rogers.
*BIG JIM’s bottom line, “Stay healthy, get a break or two, go to a bowl game”
Oh, and Steve Preece says Choukair has had a “good” camp, and “Special Teams WILL win some games this season“
“Stay healthy, get a break or two, go to a bowl game”
So he’s saying with the luck o’ the Beavs we’ll win three games.
Newell commits to OSU. Looks like a really nice get.
Solid offer sheet including 6 pac12 schools. Any idea what position they like him at? Safety? WR?
https://247sports.com/Recruitment/Isaiah-Newell-118806/RecruitInterests/
I haven’t seen anything other than RB.
At 6’3, maybe he can develop the Steven Jackson stiff arm.
Ha JS should ask Stephen Jackson to come give the RBs a stiff arm clinic. Put that shit on YouTube, talk about a recruiting tool.
*Steven
Fucking autocorrect.
I’d be concerned that he won’t sign until Feb. Going to be a long 5 months. If he starts recruiting others then he’s probably pretty solid. Otherwise, watch out for the poachers in Feb.
He’s solid with his commitment. He had a pretty good offer sheet.
given he waited until his father’s birthday to commit, I’m pretty certain he sticks with that commit as anothet example of honoring his father’s memory.
Excellent offer sheet. Haven’t seen the film yet
On paper that’s a huge recruiting win..
Looks like Adley is starting to settle in. On a 6 day hitting streak with an OBP of .500 over the last week. They are also not having him catch every day which makes sense.
“not having him catch every day which makes sense.” Although he was given credit for the way he handled the pitchers in the IronBirds game in which 3 pitchers combined for a no-hitter. Oh for an Adley Rutschman clone.
If Gumbs can stay healthy, I think he will be our D mvp. Hodgins MVP for O. He’s going to elevate whoever is QB, guy can ball.
“Hodgins MVP for O” Very well could happen.
Speaking of Hodgins, reports like this are a big reason I’m convinced Luton will be “1a” in the QB room:
https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-bradford-and-hodgins-make-a-dynamic-duo/article_cb62f810-885f-51ec-9007-3a1ab7cec878.html
If we get the Jake that gave us the win in Colorado or better I’m ok with him being the starter. With it being his 100th year the game may have finally slowed down for him and he will be much better…
Eggers up with an article on Rich Dorman and a podcast with BIG JIM and Ron Callan.
The podcast covers A LOT of ground.
One nugget: Callan notes that Andrea Aquino would have played in the PanAm games if she was cleared health-wise. She didn’t and he doubts she’ll play for the Beavs this season.
I’ve seen Aquino’s name here several times in the past. What’s preventing her from playing? I know she red-shirted last year.
Apparently not cleared to play due to an unspecified heart condition.
The lines for Oklahoma State are interesting:
Caesars- MGM-
Hilton Mirage Stations
Favorite OKST OKST OKST
Point spread -14½ -16 -15½
Not sure which one is better at this point? I’m almost thinking Oregon State to cover the 14 1/2 while Okie State covering the 15 1/2 points.
Luke news:

Didn’t these guys get the MMR vaccine?
Mexican mumps laughs at the MMR vaccine.
All mumps and measles laugh at the MMR vaccine.
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/27403106/filings-suggest-nike-paid-pursuit-players
If they find nike guilty could OSU cancel the footwear/clothing contracts on ethical issues? Not that they will but it would be interesting if they could.
I get that a lot of guys on here wear their New Balance 407’s on most weekends but you aren’t the target audience that Nike is marketing to. The target audience is young people that are similar in age to the football team. So yeah you can hope Nike collapses so the Ducks money stream is cut off, but Oregon State switching to another brand isn’t going to solve any problems until Nike becomes the equivalent of your 407’s.
New balance is for old dudes, Adidas or Under Armor on the other hand…..

Watching that Smith interview about scrimmage, it sounds like the D is still getting no turnovers.
Anyone go to that scrimmage?
I will be there
I was talking about the one last weekend, but let us know what you see.
Oh my bad lol, will do
