So, no politics in this thread. A gentle admonition. Anyone doing so will have the post deleted as the first warning. 1 week temporary ban as the 2nd warning. Discussing the virus’ effect in relation to sports is fine. Just none of the political crap. I’m so sick of it. It’s mentally unhealthy.

Feel free to discuss personal topics of interest to you that aren’t sports, as well.

I was saying in the last thread that the CWS victory is on YouTube, and I might rewatch that this week. I really miss baseball (more MLB than the Beavs, but both). I feel MLB “dropped the ball” in that there is no reason they shouldn’t be playing games right now without fans. Just rearrange the schedule and play in alternate locations. America needs baseball right now. They’re saying by July 4th, and that’s just a total disaster in their ability to adapt quickly.

Football: what positions concern you the most? What do you think the odds are we have a season? What players are you most excited about? Etc.

  1. A sign of how things might look as busy settings re-open. Shanghai Disneyland re-opened today, but is operating at only 30% capacity. Lines have sectioned off areas for social distancing and everybody gets a temp scan and must where a mask.
It’s a little creepy seeing everybody in masks, but glad to see they are trying to move forward finally. I’d imagine the short wait times make it a fantastic time to be there. Somebody tell Whiskey.

I have a dental cleaning tomorrow, and they’re charging an extra $15 for ppe gear (seems shady…eat the cost yourself; no way it costs that much per patient). They also called to tell me I have to wait in my car until they call me in. They don’t want people inside, and they are sterilizing between patients. I appreciate the effort, and I hate it, all at the same time.

        • Actually, they said I have to wear a mask when entering…so I do.
Yeah I feel it’s a money grab to make up for the 1.5 months they lost. I really like my dentist, and their fees were always fair. I’ll probably extend my cleanings out a few more months apart to stick it to them for the money grab.

          • Making dental patients wear masks for a bit sounds like disease prevention theater unless you’re gonna be waiting in the lobby for a loooong time. Isn’t the entire appointment reclining with your mouth agape, spewing aerosols everywhere?

      • It’s for the costs of N95 mask and Faceshields, which we have never had to use before, but they are the recommended standard of safety and the doctors and hygienists insist on it.

    • I know it’s technically not sports related, but I see it as a sign that people and businesses are finding a way to gradually get things working again. Baby steps, and hopefully a big tourist destination operating successfully will give more and more people comfort around the idea of sports happening again with audiences sometime in the next several months.

So, no politics in this thread. A gentle admonition…
Good move angry, the lack of an ignore button has been sorely missed lately and your “admonition” is welcome.

As said near the end of the last thread, “Continuing to drone on after stating and clarifying ones position. …
Some folks just cannot move on. Very irritating and it happens in relationships……….and on sports blogs.”

  3. I don’t understand the delay in starting the baseball season. There’s less personal contact than in just about any other sport. It’s not like basketball where you’re sweating all over your opponent all game. They can modify alignment to ensure less travel and these guys are all flying on charter flights, anyway.

From what I’ve read, it sounds like the biggest hurdle are labor related: owners want players to take pay cuts, and players want the option to not play if they feel unsafe.

It seems like an agreement on prorated pay could eventually be reached. The issue of players with contracts opting not to play seems like a bigger hurdle.

    • It could be fairly bad actually. If a pitcher has covid he could spread it to everyone on the field without anyone being within 60 ft. Ball sports are tricky except for golf. Seems like the only safe bet would be daily testing.

        Underrated and often ignored point.

I golf multiple times per week and you aren’t even allowed to touch the flag stick on courses for this very reason.

Mostly Riversedge; I lucked into one of the best membership deals of all time there so even though I don’t really love the course it is too good of a deal to pass up and leaves me with plenty of money to spend on hitting other courses a once or twice per month.

I also used to work on the greens crews at the Meadows in Sunriver and Eagle Ridge out at Eagle Crest so I can usually get comped at both still which is nice.

          • Nice! I’m in Three Rivers and play the resorts (when they are open to public) and Quail Run down in La Pine. Quail is doing a great job spacing groups out.

          • Haven’t been to Quail Run in a few years, if I am gonna drive that far I usually go out to Crooked River Ranch instead. I love the course out in CCR.

  4. Regarding the football topic.
Position of most concern: For me it’s OL followed by DL. Feels like were pretty solid everywhere else, but those are 2 big question marks. How do we go about replacing Charles Moore? Was really not too concerned with DL until he transferred. That’s a big step backwards.
DB is probably a question mark too, because of so many new faces. They have more talent but very little system experience in that room.

I do think we find a way to have a football season. Just trying to be optimistic.

I’m looking forward to seeing Treshaun Harrison play. Hope he gets a waiver. The Gebbia vs Nolan battle will be fun to watch play out.
I’m also curious if either of our 2 most recent RBs (Maddison or Newell) will start to show up as the heir to Munchie’s throne.

    • A potential DE backup option to replace Charles Moore. There’s a DE Grad transfer from Wisconsin, Christian Bell. He had committed to transfer to Illinois back in March, but as we all know from the Devon Williams situation, those transfers arent complete till the athlete becomes an active student. May be a guy worth keeping an eye on.
Bell was originally on Bama’s team out of highschool in 2016, before transferring to Wisconsin.

      https://247sports.com/college/illinois/Article/Illinois-football-Christian-Bell-Wisconsin-transfer-Illini-144743143

    • Agree on Oline. Dline I’m more optimistic about – we only lost Aydon right? And we get Reichner back, plus a bunch of young guys and JC guys. Moore is a bummer but we played well last year without him.

Guess it’s an unpopular view here but WR makes me nervous. Hope I’m wrong. Last year was the Hodgins show and no one else looked better than servicable IMO.

  5. I have my doubts MLB will play at all because unlike the NFL and NBA the owners aren’t willing to spread the losses (from no fans) for 2020 out over several seasons and are expecting the MLBPA to take even less than they’ve already offered.

MLBPA already signed off letting owners shorten the draft from 40 to 5 rounds, they already signed off on no minor league season, and they have already signed off on only getting paid for games played (81 games would mean 50% of salary) but MLB owners still want more.

I think MLBPA is at their line in the sand so it all comes down to what owners are willing to do at this point. Also you do have MLB players that want to be able to refuse to play without retribution (no pay for 2020 either) which is likely another sticking point.

I miss MLB more than anything, easily my favorite sports league and sport in general but I think July 4th might still be optimistic for getting all that needs to be done hashed out.

      • I hope they reach an agreement (and ultimately they probably will) but once the MLBPA draws a line in the sand they usually stick to it.

So it just comes down to what the owners expect from the MLBPA.

I am curious about how they will handle taxi squads that they will need. Could be another major sticking point. Will someone who would normally be in AA but is now on the MLB taxi squad get MLB pay? MLB service time?

I am rooting for games more than anything. I am so desperate I have been watching the KBO on ESPN (Go Dynos!)

        • I don’t know all the semantics, but aren’t the players losing money right now? Seems the best thing for everyone is returning to the field asap.

          • Unlike the NFLPA the MLBPA always takes the long term view. So I could see them saying we’ve given enough in order to set a precedent in case something like this happens again (we could be back in the position next February for all we know) so I wouldn’t be shocked if they use some of their dues to help out those in the lower portions of the 40 man roster instead of accepting terms that could come back to bite them long term.

          • the players are already losing some money, but the deal struck earlier was premised on fans being in the stands when play began. That doesn’t seem to be in the cards. Agree with YO (!) this proposal will rise or fall on the players taking another cut. My father in law, who was a business agent for union, had a great saying: “sometimes the men need the company, and sometimes the company needs the men.” In this case, they need each other.

          • Yeah, but with the NFL and NBA not asking their players to give back money I have a hard time seeing the MLBPA agree to it.

This is the biggest flaw of the MLB economic model. Because unlike the NFL/NBA/NHL the players don’t get a fixed percentage of the revenue it becomes more difficult for MLB to spread the losses from 2020 out over multiple seasons.

From what I have read it sounds like MLB wants to get the MLBPA to agree to such a model for 2020 and I could easily see the MLBPA seeing that as owners trying to backdoor a salary cap in and the union ended the 1994 season in August and didn’t report for 1995 season until that was off the table already so we will find out how they feel about such a deal in 2020.

        • I thought the owners had already proposed expanded rosters?

Interesting to think about how a shorter season would impact roster strategy. For example, as a Mariners fan, I’d like to see as many young guys as possible so they don’t miss out on a full season of developemnt.

          • They have and anyone on the 40 man roster is already covered by that but 40 players probably won’t be enough.

They will likely need 20-30 more guys working out/scrimmaging in AZ/FL as potential injury/illness replacements.

That is the group I am curious about.

          • Sort of agree on your Mariners point but will offer a counter point if I was Mariners management.

Does it make sense to use a full year of service time (MLB has already said service time will be pro-rated to a full season regardless of season length) to a guy like Logan Gilbert or Jarred Kelenic in a shortened season you don’t expect to compete in?

Guys like Kyle Lewis will definitely get to play but I could easily see Seattle prefer not to waste a year of service time on their real studs. Which is also why I am curious about the taxi squads/fall developmental leagues that have been talked about. I could easily see Seattle send Kelenic to AZ for scrimmages/development but only if they don’t have to give a full season of MLB service time to him for it.

          • I’d think it would be really discouraging if you’re a top prospect who has been told you’re The Future and the club tells you they don’t want you playing this year. You can only keep guys engaged and focused on development for so long.

          • How would it be discouraging since the players were already slated to start the season in AA and weren’t gonna make the opening day roster to begin with? And at best would earn a call up in July/August?

I agree on guys like Lewis and Fraley who were projected to be in MLB to open the season already but guys that aren’t even required to be on the 40 man roster yet? Don’t see how they can be discouraged.

          • Because the situation is different now. They were going to get regular games pre-COVID and now it’s play in the majors or nothing. Usually AA level guys will still get late season call ups, so for someone like Kelenic to be told they want him to sit at home all season would probably be discouraging (especially when the team’s not playing to win this year, anyway.)

          • Very few AA guys get call ups before they are required to be added to the 40 man roster. Kyle Lewis only got called up because he had to be added to the 40 man in 2020 anyway.

Kelenic doesn’t even need to be added to the 40 man roster till 2022.

It would be a terrible decision to give Kelenic a year of service time this year.

And he wouldn’t sit all year, MLB has already said they plan to expand the Arizona Fall League so guys like Kelenic get to play, it just won’t be until September

I also fully expect 25-35 players in Arizona playing at spring training facilities.

          • You also need to remember that once you add Kelenic to the 40 man you have to cut someone and Kelenic’s option clock starts so if you find he isn’t ready you’re now using an option on a guy in 2021 when he didn’t even need to be on the 40 man roster.

Also means either Lewis or Fraley both of whom have demonstrated they are more ready don’t play MLB in 2020. How do you think they react?

The plan was to make Kelenic force his way up in 2020 by proving he is ready.

    • With baseball though you exchange significantly less bodily fluids than football or basketball though… viral loads ya know?

  6. MASKS:
There was an ab’r here whose mom was making masks, I’m too lazy to search back for the contact info. Would like to support a fellow ab by buying a couple.

  7. OT (on topic):

Football: what positions concern you the most?

    1) OL 2) DL 3) CB’s. This is another year of progress, but the O still needs to carry an improving D; the OL needs to produce.

What do you think the odds are we have a season?

Low. If it occurs, truncated – league games only. Which I think would be a great test of coaching staffs and very interesting to see. Who adapts best, most quickly?

What players are you most excited about?

    1) Hamilcar, favorite LB since Michael Doctor, 2) Speights, Gumbs, Roberts, Riley Sharp, 3) A fast healthy (fingers crossed) David Morris, 4) Jaydon Grant – does he take a big step forward? 5) WRs – can they effectively use all of that speed with no one taller than 6’1”, 6) Gebbia/Nolan – either will do well with these skill players, and 7) TEs.

It’s refreshing to actually looking forward to watching the DEFENSE, been years.

    • I’m hoping extended time off has given Morris time to heal. That would be a huge boost to the secondary.

Regarding WR: I’m guessing the height gap can be negated a bit by making more use of the young TE’s we have. Musgrave is poised for a breakout season.

NiceBeaver brought it up above, but I’m a little concerned about RB depth behind JJ. Baylor looked serviceable when AP and JJ were hurt last year, but we really need someone to take a big step developmentally to spell JJ.

        • Forgot about him. Dude currently has a Pierce-esque 5.5 YPC for his career.

He’s a junior now, so this is his year.

      • At RB we could potentially have Lowe taking reps this year if he gets his waiver granted. So I’m not all that worried about the depth, so much as I am looking forward to seeing how that position group’s younger guys develop.
Pitre landed JJ when most other teams were passing on him and that seems to have been a home run recruiting win. Curious if his other RB recruits are similar recruiting wins. Hard to tell last year with Newell redshirting.

Regarding transfer waivers, I suspect the NCAA will be much more lenient this year about the sitting period, simply due to the uncertain environment student athletes are having to navigate. If players move school to be closer to home, seems like it would be bad PR for the NCAA to punish them by making them lose a year of eligibility.
I know our guys transferred in before all this stuff started happening, but the NCAA has enough on their plate that ruling everybody on a case by case basis just doesn’t seem worthwhile.

  8. Canzano had this blurb on Clay Helton talking with media. Helton saying one option Pac teams are looking at is playing an 11 game conference only schedule this season. Not to say that is where things will go, but I could understand that. Makes coordinating a schedule much easier when you don’t have to involve inter-conference games.
Would kill small conferences though, if they lose out on that revenue. Seems like the Pac would still need to pay off the teams they cancel games with, via buyout arrangements.

That is a great idea, of course I’d be fine with doing that every year.

If I had the power, I’d eliminate the divisions.

1 OOC game plus 11 game conference season, top 2 teams play a re-match at the site of the #1 seed and the winner to the Rose Bowl (fuck the playoff).

      That would be my dream.

It would still allow warm up games or the long term rivalries like SC/ND to continue but we’d get a true regular season champ with a compelling battle for the Rose’s every year.

      Never happen sadly.

  9. I feel like I’m walking on egg shells with this but I think it falls under Angry’s provision about the virus’s impact on sports: The University of British Columbia announced today that its classes will only be on-line/distance etc. in the fall. (A couple other Canadian universities, the same.) UBC could be the first domino to fall on the west coast. no classes/no sports.

    • Seems like that is exactly the OOC schedule you’ve promoted for most of those years…
      1 FCS
      1 non P5 BCS
1 Lower tier P5 (home and home)

      Or maybe I misunderstood previously?

Anyway, I see no sense playing tOSU nor do I see the point in playing all cupcakes at home (ala the phighting phils)

      • The problem is those P5 teams are now low enough, nor are the non P5. We shouldn’t be messing around with Boise St or Fresno St. All downside, no upside.

San Jose St, New Mexico, et al, yes.

        • Honestly I had to go check because I wasn’t sure what their respective records were but still doesn’t look terrible. I’ll give you Boise but…
          Purdue
          4 8 0
          6 7 0
          7 6 0
          3 9 0
          2 10 0

          Fresno St
          4 8
          12 2
          10 4
          1 11
          3 9

          Texas Tech
          4 8 0
          5 7 0
          6 7 0
          5 7 0
          7 6 0
          4 8 0

          Ole Miss
          4 8 0
          5 7 0
          6 6 0
          5 7 0
          10 3 0

          • I’d be more interested to see Purdue, Texas Tech, and Ole Miss’ recruiting classes compared to ours. Records can be misleading and more a reflection of their standing in that Conference. I think of all those schools as getting way better talent than us. Maybe Purdue is around even. But those other two definitely seem to recruit better. Fresno St is a tough one because they get a lot of under the radar CA/inner city talent that has no interest in moving to the PNW but isn’t good enough to go to USC or UCLA.

  10. I now know someone who died of Covid19. One of my dads good friends in Arizona passed yesterday. He apparently caught it from his son-in-law after the son-in-law had emergency surgery about a month ago and got it at the hospital. Things are a little murky, but it sounds like he was never given any treatments just given an option to die peacefully or be put on a ventilator. He did have some heart issues in the past but he played 18 holes twice a week. So maybe not in that bad of health, not really sure as I haven’t seen him in 10 years or so. He was 82.
Shitty deal, but this might have scared my dad into being more cautious about being in public without ppe.

      • Yeah hopefully he wears a facemask from here on out. He’s in the underlying category, in several ways. I can hear a little fear in his voice so hopefully its a wake up call.

    • Sorry dude.

Yeah getting my mom to understand the need for masks took some doing. Then Sunday she told me she can’t find any and is in a panic so having to overnight her some.

  11. 247 has re-ranked transfers. You’ll be happy to know the 2 4* transfers(Harrison/Lowe) OSU received have been downgraded to 3*. Quillen went from 3* to 2*, and Sorensen went up from 2* to 3*.
Charles Moore was re-ranked from 4* to 3* when we received him, but now that he is transferring out again, I wonder if he will receive another re-ranking depending on where he lands?

    https://247sports.com/college/oregon-state/Season/2020-Football/TransferPortal/

      • Yeah, I’m curious about that. Do they ever include information about why an athlete’s rating has changed? I assume no. But I’m fine with it. It reduces the number of eyes from other schools on our recruiting. I just wonder if it affects the athlete’s perception of OSU if they get downgraded when committing.

    • Looks like algorithm/data base update to me. Perhaps they are moving them to different years or there is automatic downgrades for transfers or guys who haven’t seen the field much. All the new numbers are flat (.8200, .8700) which leads me to believe it isn’t evaluations but just updates to whatever numbers make up those ratings. Sorenson makes plenty of sense since his simple measurables are way higher than high school for that position. Lowe makes no sense except they shat on him cause he didn’t make a splash at UW. Harrison seems like a mild downgrade just cause he didn’t win out on rosters (maybe they compare the people who start vs recruits once they are on a roster?). Idk its all black magic because the methodology is private. They could even have downgrades to players if they don’t think they will ever see the field. Moore may bounce around forever and never play, maybe with enough transfers they just throw your numbers in the dumpster fire.

Either way they probably have a tier system for schools that upgrades players based on their scholarships and Oregon State is probably Mid tier somewhere. If someone transfers perhaps all their scholarship offers from hs stop counting. I doubt there is an intrinsic Oregon State sucks bias built into ratings but who knows.

      • I don’t think it’s a stretch to say players get updated based on where they commit. There were numerous examples over the past several years where an unrated or 2 star guy would commit to OSU, and then get “re-evaluated” as a middle of the road 3* guy. Whatever year we had Moran come in at QB, I remember watching the rantings of our commits and nearly every guy had the exact same 5.5 (3*) grade.

Will be interesting to see what happens with Moore. Gets re-rated to 3* when he comes to OSU. If he now ends up at a USC or Ohio State, does he get moved back up to 4*?

Not sure those will be options for him though, so we may never find out.

  12. I would be in favor of a conference only season. That would be kind of fun. Then top 2 teams for the title. Everyone gets the same bye?

I think everyone could get out of the non con games. Generally contracts don’t have pandemic clauses so it might work.

      • Not disagreeing but is that really the PAC 12’s responsibility?

The PAC has its own issues to worry about and needs to look out for itself before concerning itself with the problems of non-PAC schools.

        • No not really. Its just a short sighted solution for the whole system. If that happens the whole system will need a rework or the sport will contract as opportunity decreases and pipelines dry up.

        • It could work out for the PAC12.

Higher quality games means higher ratings and maybe a better tv contract.

This would really only work if the pac12 champ auto qualified for the playoff. Would only have to schedule one non con per year and they could make those good ones.

          • It wouldn’t improve the quality of the games enough to have a meaningful impact on ratings or the TV deal. The PAC12’s problems will always be:
            A) The time zone
            B) People in western states not having the same cultural attachment to college football as Texas, the Midwest, and the SEC

  13. Exactly as I assumed. MLBPA says it will not accept any deal that locks them into a specific amount of revenue (basically backdooring a salary cap)

    https://twitter.com/EvanDrellich/status/1259963474488287233

That said the roster rules have leaked, 30 man rosters plus 20 player taxi squad.

    About what I expected.

Note: Taxi squad solves the top prospect problem, no service time unless called up. So I’d expect most teams to include their top young prospects in that group but never call them up (they play in AZ if the last plan I read remains).

  14. Regarding MLB, does that mean the season is over? If players aren’t willing to budge, I don’t see what’s in it for owners given they will get crushed on revenue with a few fans at each game.

    • Maybe, maybe not.

I get why the MLBPA is taking the position they are taking though. MLB is a year away from negotiating a new CBA and no way does the union want to put a cap on the table.

I’d say MLB owners have the same incentive European soccer teams have to play without fans since the MLB model most closely resembles the European soccer model. And all those leagues are starting back up and without any pay cuts to the players. I of course have no idea what those incentives are beyond speculation.

Personally, I think MLBPA holds firm and MLB owners decide they’ll lose less playing under the terms of the agreement reached in March. And games begin in July but maybe not.

      • What will owners gain? I can’t see what’s in it for them if there are no fans. TV revenue? I’m not sure what those #s are, but I guess. In March they offered pro-rated salaries based on games, right? That seems like the only way this gets resolved. Really stupid to let it linger a day more…

  15. I’m not really all that concerned with the OL. I’m more concerned with RT assuming kipper slides to the left. It feels like we have quite a few guys who can be solid interior lineman but I’m not sure if they have another pac 12 quality tackle and certainly don’t have depth there. Which then causes me to worry about pass protection.

It will be interesting to see how the receivers will play out. Im not sure if we have a true number 1 but seem to be deep at that position. Flemings hasn’t shown too much IMO. He had 1 big game against cal poly and not much else. Hopefully Harrison can play. I really like Taylor and I think he’ll emerge in a bigger role. Bradford is solid. Will guys like irish, gould, and Lindsey take the next step. Does Beason redshirt?

Rb is solid. I agree with angry Tyler shows a lot of promise. If I remember correctly h had crazy HS numbers in texas and was originally ahead of Baylor before getting hurt. Madison is probably ready for some action after redshirting. I would like Newell to redshirt. Lowe is icing on the cake if he can play.

TE you have quitoriano who is a great blocker and showed he has pretty good hands when he gets the chance. Musgrave will be good and can be the more receiving TE like togiai. Young guys might have to play. That Ralph kid I think played in samoa and is probably still a little raw.

QB I feel good about Gebbia. It sounded like Nolan was struggling in practice a little and Gulbranson was outperforming him. Not sure what to make of that it was such a little sample size. Chryst and Moore I think are pretty solid for PWOs.

DL I think should have enough bodies but nobody is really dominant there. I’m concerned about Whitley coming back out of shape. We don’t really have any other real big 300 plus guys that I can think of.

LB is stacked. I’m excited to see Gumbs play opposite of Rashed. How does colleto do there? Should see more Fisher this year. Speights is a beast.

DB is concerning. Dunn, Wright, and grant are solid. Who will the backups be? Are the JC guys able to contribute without all of the offseason practice? Do guys like Moran or Watson finally contribute? Can Morris stay healthy? Arnold looks promising.

Guys I’m excited about are the transfers, the young speedy receivers, and the JC guys. Also the return of Gumbs should be exciting.

    • Pretty good summary. We have some DT types in the 280 range but no huge boys. Realistically we just need Data to soak up blockers so the 4 LB can react unencumbered, don’t need dominant play but I would love to have it. (Bennett 288, Shipen 288, Dawson 279, Sandberg 278, Skelton 302).

DB – concise except we also have Grant who played really well in a few games. I think he looked better.than Morris and Arnold.

      • I mentioned Grant. He usually plays nickel I think. Do we know where Arnold is playing or the JCs for that matter? I feel like Arnold was a safety but think I saw somewhere he was listed at corner.

        • We have serious length on the outsides now so I would expect him at Nickle or safety. Last year it seemed like the secondary was best available pretty often. Could have just been injuries but Dunn, Arnold, Morris, Austin and Grant all played nickle or safety at some point. I meant Austin above not grant! We both forgot JoJo who saw some time last year at Nickle and corner.

I would expect to see the tall dudes like Julian, Wright, Riley to get looks at corner and Hardge at safety. It really seems like the coaches are fine bouncing secondary guys around to make the right matchups. If a guy has a better feel in one spot than another I’m sure they will move them. On the roster they are all dbs and I think the staff views it that way

    • Beason will likely redshirt because we have so many guys with similar skill sets already on the roster. Not a lot of room for him with Bradford, Lindsay, Irish, and maybe Gould…unless he really impresses in camp.

Re: Nolan being outplayed by Gulbranson…if you watched Nolan’s tape, you can see he played in a very limited offensive set. He’s a tools prospect and a guy who was always going to need at least a year to get up to speed. I think many on here assumed he was being brought in to challenge for the starting job. My assumption is he was just brought in to plug the gap on the depth chart in his graduating year.

On the other hand, it’s good to hear Gulbranson was looking pretty good.

  16. The Chronicle of Higher Education’s website (chronicle.com) has a searchable database that is updated daily to indicate the current thinking about how classes will be conducted in the fall.

I hear that Nike paid Zion half a mil while he was in college

  17. Extending the conversation on schedules above. There’s an interesting dichotomy and causality with scheduling that the SEC has proven out. Quality of OOC games does not matter if you get wins. If the majority of a conference enters conference play 3-0 it adds excitement and makes a conference look good. Year in and out the SEC and ACC pile 4 cream puffs into their schedule. Objectively these games are boring and low entertainment but it has no reprecussions on conference success.

For the success of a conference getting as many teams to post season and total conference win count is key. This affects rankings, recruiting, tv/endorsement and teams momentum. It’s a bad deal for anyone who appreciates a good game but the proof is in the numbers. I’m pro weak schedule because it gets us halfway to post season and improves our future opportunities. The PAC 12 beats the shit out of itself anyways, I say take the easy wins.

    • This has been an ongoing topic on this site for several years before arrived on the scene. I think since Bobby D schedule those body bag games at Michigan and Ohio State.
Some people prefer the exciting big name games, but I’m not in that group. I would rather see us play 3 nobodies and become bowl eligible consistently versus starting the season with a guaranteed loss.
Of course, for a period it seemed we were destined to lose regardless of who we scheduled(See Ssc State). I guess in that case it’s better to lose at home to Oklahoma State instead of losing at home to Sac State.

The SEC teams sometimes get maybe a little unfairly categorized as playing 4 cupcakes. Seems that 3 cupcakes and 1 legitimate opponent is more likely. And their cupcakes are usually home games or geographically close schools to minimize travel.
At least Alabama(USC, Louisville, FSU) and Auburn(Clemson x2, UW, Oregon) have played some pretty decent non conference competition in recent memory. They’re just smarter about how they spread the cupcakes around their schedule to give them more “off” weeks during the season.

At this point, I dont even care who we play, as long as we get to play some games.

      • The issue with the cupcakes is that OSU can’t afford to pay for three teams to come every year. OSU fans tend not to come for cupcake games either.

        Winning solves everything clearly.

        • That is a great point. I’m sure you can shop around and find good deals. Could explain why we have a bunch of non-P5 D1 teams like fresno and new mexico on the docket.

          • In about 2005 the NCAA mandated that D1-A schools start scheduling regional D1-AA schools to aid in their revenues. As an incentive a twelfth game was allowed and the win was applied to the six win minimum for D1-A bowl eligibility . It was a win-win. The alternative would have been some sort of revenue sharing to help sustain the regional D1-AAs.
The nomenclature of the divisions was changed from D1-A, D1-AA to FBS and FCS later.

          • Did they mandate it?

UCLA and Notre Dame have still never played an FCS school. And the Big Ten tried banning its schools from playing FCS opponents a few years back but it didn’t last.

I know Arizona law required ASU and UA to play NAU at one time but not sure that law is still on the books.

      • 1
        1

I know those games were primarily for money, but I remember Riley always emphasized what an experience it was for the kids to get to play @ LSU, @ Penn State, etc. For him, I think those kind of games provided a facsimile of the bowl atmosphere (big stadiums, big crowds, tv attention) he could never get at the end of the season. “Well, kids were not going to a big bowl game at the end of the season, might as well enjoy this. Bring your lunch pails!”

      • The other thing with playing the likes of Ohio State especially at the beginning of the year are the injuries a game like that leaves us with. I’m all about the powder puffs to get warmed up on and chances of bodies being broken by 5* blue chippers is a lot less.

    • Ya it always seemed riley’s good teams always stumbled out of the blocks and lose out of conference games that hurt the team down the line.

    • Makes me wonder how this will affect college choices for athletes who live in California. If you have the choice to play at ASU or USC, does the fact that California is forcing residents to stay home for an extended period of time while Arizona is opening everything up, affect where a student athlete wants to go?

I could choose USC and possibly have to stay home, or go to Arizona and go whereever I want, whenever I want.

      • Could be the same for Oregon and Washington schools. I thought the West Coast states had some type of agreement to open up together. Might include the state schools. So what happens if the Arizona colleges can play but Oregon and Washington cannot? Not sure about CO, and UT.

    • Just a note, the Cal State system is separate from the UC system which Cal Berkeley and UCLA are a part of. Stanford and USC are not part of either since they are private schools.

Cal State has schools like Fresno, Bakersfield, San Diego State. It does seem odd that a state would have two university systems but it’s also a very large state.

So they may still have in person classes this year which would mean sports.

      • I was more commenting on LA County going on an additional 3 months of lockdown time. That’s brutal, especially with the hot weather moving in.
I did read tonight comments from somebody in the UC school system who said they’re looking to take similar measures as the Cal State system. That would include UCLA and CAL at least.
These things seem to happen like dominos on the West coast. One state makes a move and the other 2 follow suit. But now we have competing states like Arizona that are taking things a different direction. Everybody has become guinea pigs. Guess we ‘ll see which method works best in the long run. Good luck everybody!

      • Actually, most states have two systems, evolved from land-grant and normal systems. Many states have A&M systems as well. Texas also has a Tech system.

        It’s not uncommon.

Oregon is an oddball, given our size. Though, Nikegon would be the outlier in the OUS, as a normal, for all the same reasons.

This is why it’s more than laughable when some putz tries to call Nikegon a flagship school.

    • I agree with this system more than any other.

I actually think this is why Arizona opened up to pro ball–to gather the MLB in such a way.

There’s zero reason MLB players can’t come to Arizona to play an ad hoc season. Family is welcome. But once you’re in the village, you don’t leave. If you do, you go through quarantine/testing before you re-enter.

They can play on any diamond, since fans aren’t a thing. The press can have access to every player without remote contact or having to follow them from town to town.

I just thought of this… I don’t know the income taxes in Arizona. Maybe doing the same thing in Texas or Florida benefits the players.

But making a professional league camp out like an Olympic village makes sense. It also makes for some exclusivity, which can’t be bad for all the player’s handlers.

  18. Anybody seen Once Upon a Time in Hollywood?
Wondering if it would be ok to watch with my lady or if it’s better to watch solo? She can handle some violence, but I’ve heard it gets pretty bad at some point. Just curious how graphic or over the top it is?

    • Haven’t seen it, but that’s Quentin Tarantino’s M.O., do something that’s already been done, be clear about the homage, and take it further in terms of graphic violence.

    • Its pretty ok until the last 20-30 minutes, then it becomes a comedic Kill Bill slash-fest. I liked the movie a lot, but I like Tarantino’s movies

    • Cool, thanks for the heads up. Sounds like I’ll be watching it solo, or at least she’ll want to tune out before the ending.
I like most Tarantino films, but she’s just not into that stuff. But she does like Leo and Brad Pitt.
Seems odd to make a comedic slash-fest take on true events and actual people. Like disrespectful to their families

      • 2

Has she watched “Blood Diamond?” Great flick. Stars DiCaprio, there’s violence, but its not gratuitous violence as entertainment.

“A River Runs Through it” (Brad Pitt) is pretty good. Enjoyed the book, movie has some fun fly-fishing scenes in it.

Or maybe you should just watch ‘Raising Arizona’ and laugh?

      • He got blessings from the involved parties. He makes alternate realities of stuff he didn’t like when he goes historical. Django, Inglorious and Once upon a Time all fit that model.

  19. So does anybody want Vidlak over kitna or millen or is it kind of next best thing? Seems like we still have a decent shot at the other 2 but Vidlak might commit first. Maybe @nicebeav knows how that looks. I know you were pretty high on him.

    • Millen is by far the star of the qb class between the 3. Kitna is probably physically more impressive than Vidlak but I think the skills go to Vidlak. Its a small class but if Vidlak commits and Millen decides to join the party too I’m sure we find a way to get him a spot.

    • I rally don’t know the chances with Millen or Kitna. Just from what I’ve read or seen, the consensus seems to be Vidlak eventually flipping to OSU.(Nemec wrote about it and 247 has multiple crystal balls predicting it)
But I think the whole prospect of the Pac12 potentially not having a football season has to give players some pause and is a major wild card right now. What if that happens and what if it happens again the following year, but places like Montana or the SEC still have football? Who would want to take their chances on a Pac12 commitment?

      • Millen said we’re top 2 (along with Arizona) and he wanted to commit before the HS season as of April. I’m sure quarantine has put some things in perspective, but it sounded to me like we had every shot at landing him. Maybe he’ll want to be closer to home in a post-COVID world.

I’d call Millen and Vidlak 1A and 1B.

Kitna seems like a lower probability commit. Florida is in the running, and I’d imagine playing in Texas is going to attract a lot more attention from in-state. Also, his highlights look good, but his stats are a bit questionable: 52% completion, 7-6 TD-INT. I wonder if Riley is playing some role in his interest in OSU, with Jon Kitna and him being buddies.

The fact that this is our group of high probability QB commits is pretty exciting. I can’t remember the last time we landed a HS QB with the kind of upside these guys.

        • Millen has also recently added an Indiana offer which he seems pretty enthusiastic about. Think Illinois is looking at him too.
It could be that the Beavs view Millen/Vidlak as 1A/1B and as soon as Millen makes up his mind, it’s Vidlak’s job to take. Might explain why Vidlak hasn’t flipped already. You’d think a guy getting a Pac12 opportunity close to home would jump on that chance immediately, but he has been quiet since the offer. Could mean it’s a contingent offer.

    • Millen. I have to think that being able live near his brother and also play against him a couple times is good incentive to attend OSU

    • Millen has the highest ceiling and floor.

I do think Smith has a decent shot. It’s a good fit system wise, location, opportunity to start early and coaching stability.

UA has the advantage on coeds and weather.

      • He received his OSU offer, but didn’t flip yet. Still a Montana verbal commit at this point.

Last week we landed Mascarenas, the 4* LB from Mission Viejo.

Along those lines, I do think Damir Collins is getting close to making his decision and OSU is considered the leading team for him.

Are we loaded at DB? We are really young but looking at the roster it seems like there are endless guys who I have seen on the field.

Experience Last Year: Wright, Hayes, Dunn, Grant, Arnold, Austin, Morris, Forest. [8]
Possibly game ready: Julian, Wright (Rej), Riley, Oladapo, Watson, Stoudamire (walk on with good size from Georgia?!?, Damons brother). [6]
Not sure: Russel, Harris, Moran, Wynston, Robinson, Hardge [5]

    Seniors: 1 Juniors: 6 Sophomores: 7 Freshmen: 5

I honestly can’t remember a time where we were potentially this loaded up on defense to fit the scheme. The scheme is designed for 3 Linemen to keep blockers busy and generally be annoying (tall, athletic and big enough 270-300 range). 4 Linebackers are the stats stars coming off the edge and making reads in the middle. Corners are generally tall to make angles difficult. Safeties are true safeties who just keep it in front of them and make tackles. Thinking about the scheme the recruiting has been incredible. I don’t really see holes in personel just a lot of young guys.

If you don’t really consider the scheme and think in 4-3 mode the DT situation is awful. I see the entire DL as 3 big athletic dudes. If you make that shift and look at the roster we basically have 6 guys that are 6’2-6’5 and 270-290. We have two guys in the big boy range of 6′-6’2 300+ range. Then there are also change of pace dudes who are in the mid 260s like Rawls and Hodgins. If the goal of this group is to take up some blocks and piss off the opposing OL I tihnk their mix of size and athleticism is going to be infuriating. We can also send in personnel groups that vary in height, size and athleticism that could be really distracting and challenging for opposing OL. This isn’t the days when Swancutt came at the same two O-linemen 60 times a game. From a blockers perspective you could be facing a different dude every down…which is great cause the real threat is the linebackers killing the qb or having a free run at a runner.

Sorry this one was more ranging than I like but I got excited thinking about how this defense is being built to fit a scheme. Under past coaches it felt like we could never get enough quality DT but we just kept the same schemes anyways knowing it wouldn’t work.

    • Just remember, experience doesn’t always equate to better performance. The DB’s were the weakest link on a bad defense last year.

      • True but it definitely helps. The group did get better as the year went on so hopeful. I can’t think of a time when our secondary had this much size.

    • There is a Q&A on the recruiting sites with coach blue. It’s pretty good. He says theyre6the reason that the team didn’t go bowling. He wants his players to be smart and a lil bit of pricks. Says that Grant is the only one right now who is mean enough right now.

      • 1
        1

He’s taking the high road by blaming his position group for the team not bowling.
If he was speaking candidly, he’d need to put some blame on coach Smith for going for it on 4th down at WSU ;) or for blowing the Hawaii game or Stanford games with suspect in game decision making.

We are losing 11 seniors at the end of this season. Overall a pretty small class but I thought I would take a look to see what we really need to be recruiting. Looking at the roster the short story is this class is about upgrades more than replacing anything. We have a pile of OL that are same similiar size or larger, we are loaded for a couple years at LB (ham is not replaceable imo but guys will do well), DL we lose our largest player and potentially our best but we are still in pretty good shape. WR we are incredibly stacked, ill miss bradford but its really next man up. This class I would like to see them focus on quality projects and freshmen who can possibly push for time. Looking for players who already have the frame on OL even if the weight still needs to come up. Even though we still have not had a winning season this is one of the most complete rosters we have had since Erickson.

    WR: Bradford
LB: Hamilcar, Taumoelau, Leonnig, Hughes-Murray….Recruit [Mascarenas (6′ 215)
DL: Whitley, Reichner…Recruits [Alex Lemon (6’4 275 may be a Kuli)
    OL: Montibon (6’2 276), Sorenson (6’5 312), Eldridge (6’4 284), Keobounnam (6’2 283)…Recruits [Buckles (6’2 285), Veikoso (6’6 295)]

    • Wow, we’ll miss a lot of those guys, but the losses are mostly at positions where we’re deep. The pipeline is looking good!

Just like this year, OL will be the biggest concern.

    • Agree with you about replacing guys nowhere do we need someone starting caliber right away except maybe the lines. Could use a large DT. Hamilcar isn’t replaceable but I think with this scheme we’ll continue to see big numbers at that position compared to the past. The lines are the key tho. That’s the main position that I would like recruiting to improve.

      • Lines are very hard to recruit. This year will be a huge proof of concept using tall athletic guys. Whittley isn’t gonna be an every down guy at 330 so we will be running light often. If it works then the dl recruiting is good in my book. OL I would love some 4 star guys but we all know how brutal that is. If we have a good stream of big frames that we can put on 2-3 year starting timelines we can stay competitive. We just can’t take 6’2 255 guys and expect them to make quality linemen someday.

  22. https://twitter.com/JonHeyman/status/1260363191877545984

For MLB fans, not exactly the best of news because I see a 0% chance the union accepts what they see as a salary cap. Lame.

Too bad neither side can see the obvious fix, expand to 32 teams once the economy recovers and the owners recoup their losses that way. MLB is the only sport where expanding doesn’t cut into teams revenue streams since teams don’t share revenue and MLB is currently in its longest period without expansion since the expansion era began.

    Figure it out.

    • They’ll come to some kind of agreement. Players may end up having to agree to be paid out of a rev split and have the remaining dollars owed under the pro rated agreement be deferred with interest. Owners will have to give as well as this would only apply to this year and pay out what’s owed inside of a year or two.

All this is ground work for the next cba. The pandemic has hurt the players positions since they are the workers. Owners will try to leverage the pandemic to limit player salaries as always. Billionaires always beat millionaires.

      • Maybe but I think it’s a massive long term error by said billionaires.

Turn off fans (I might just make OSU my baseball team after this nonsense) will do more long term damage than they’ll lose now.

I know I’m lying to myself because baseball is engrained in me like religion but not all fans are me. Lots bailed in 94, MLB should learn from their mistakes.
The other leagues seem to get this.

      • That DH rule passing today is another blow to the sport. The rule changes to not allow pitching matchups was another death blow. Baseball is trying to kill itself in the name of “faster games”…I don’t know any legit baseball fans who care about the length. I think that has more to do with player/ump unions and degenerate gamblers and the ADD addled fair weather fans.

        • They should look at what Cricket did. There are three kinds of matches now. Test is traditional and takes days, no one cares. International are 1 day matches and are pretty popular. Most popular are 50 and 20 overs which take 2-4 hours. The changes has really blown the game up in India and south east Asia but you can still catch the longer formats if you are a purest.

Turbo Baseball sounds like a rad option.

          • From the perspective of getting young fans interested in MLB this is exactly what MLB The Show does for the sport.

MLB games don’t take days like Test Cricket matches.

All this talk that MLB is dying is hyperbolic mania.

The only pro league on the planet that generates more revenue than MLB is the NFL and MLB at #2 is closer to the NFL than it is to #3 which is the EPL.

MLB isn’t dying. It is a cash cow.

I just find this whole thing obnoxious. The long term good will of playing alone is likely worth whatever revenue they lose by sticking to the agreement they made less than 2 months ago.

            Play ball Damn it.

          • And to be clear the I am not claiming players are the hero’s here but I know 3 priorities of the MLBPA and these are in order.

            1) No SALARY CAP
            2) Always take the LONG term view
            3) No SALARY CAP

So when MLB comes at them 2 months after the players already agreed to reduce their salaries based on a per game basis with what they absolutely believe violates Priority 1 and 3, they will invoke Priority 2. MLB knows this too and they leaked their “deal” to make players look like the villains.

And while I wouldn’t disagree with you on your point about AA and AAA the other dirty little secret is that the concerns of those players aren’t represented at the bargaining table. They aren’t in the MLBPA. They don’t get a vote. Which is bullshit but reality.

        • Agreed. I hate all these stupid attempts to “find” new fans.

You know how you get new fans? Grandparents and parents passing the love of the game down.

Plenty of kids like baseball, they may not watch now (I certainly didn’t watch as much as a kid, I being a kid) but they will watch in the future and pass that love on again.

MLB is instead turning off current fans to chase future fans before they’re gonna watch multiple times a week.

osp officers won’t be applying for those jobs. There are so many county and city jobs available they can slide right in. And they won’t have to deal with backlash for using the wrong pronoun on campus.
But OSP isn’t going anywhere, this is mostly threats by Brown. She just dumped several million onto hiring new officers recently no way are they going to cut the patrol side. Forensics, lab techs, various special enforcement groups maybe but not patrol.

      • 2
        3

…won’t have to deal with backlash for using the wrong pronoun on campus.
        Spot on, BB!
While most departments have a “PC” element, nothing like what is likely to exist now at OSU. A two year “interim” chief who reports to the campus diversity queen? Enough to cause second thoughts even for the macho men who think working around college coeds is a great opportunity!

If Vidlak, I’m a little creeped out by Angry and his ability to envision commitments in his dreams the night before they happen.

Or Vidlak just reads AB and started to wonder why he was waiting to jump on this Pac12 opportunity

        • Watching his video I still don’t know if he can hit a guy inside 5 yards or do a screen. 20-50 yards hes a killer though!

      • I was surprised BSU didn’t recruit him and sell him on the success of qb’s in their recent past.

        From OLive (forgive me):

“EForce co-owner and private quarterback coach Alex Brink, a former star for the Washington State Cougars, saw the potential early – first at a summer camp prior to Vidlak’s junior year and then again at a 7-on-7 tryout.

“I thought he was one of the best pure throwers I had seen in a long time,” Brink said. “The ball explodes off his hand. He also was hyper-competitive with a chip on his shoulder, which I loved. I felt strongly he was a Pac-12 talent and just needed to get in front of those coaches.”

After throwing for 3,404 yards and 44 touchdowns with just three interceptions during his junior season, Vidlak earned and accepted a full-ride scholarship offer from Montana and thought his recruitment was over.

But then Oregon State entered the picture.”

It will be great to see a kid with that kind of skill have an opportunity to play for OSU.

  23. With Vidlak that gives us 7 QBs on the 2021 roster. I’m always hoping for atleast 3 guys who are game ready in the PAC so lets take a look. I ranked them but make no claim to being correct.

    Seniors: 0
    Juniors: Gebbia [1] , Moore [4], Williard [6]
    Soph: Nolan [2]
    Frosh: Gulbranson [3], Chryst [5]
    Recruits: Vidlak

I would say we have 3 1/2 qbs who could play if pressed into service this year. There would be drop offs but I think we could win a game with 1-4. In two years atleast half the current roster graduates and we could lose some guys as transfers. Taking two in this class would not be a terrible idea if they were both down to redshirt.

    • 5
      1

Williard will never see the field. I doubt Chryst or Moore does, either. So we have 4 legit options, and all of those guys are good.

      • Agree about willard. He should transfer but won’t because it’s his dream school. Too bad he isn’t better it would be a good story.

    • 2
      1

This kid tends to throw off his back foot quite a bit. I just hope this doesn’t cause us to lose out on a better prospect. I’m not saying I don’t like him or I think they’re better but it seems this year we had some good options that were high on us. Did we get an under the radar guy or is there a reason he was committed to Montana?

      • He plays small school Oregon ball and camped at Montana his freshman year. That’s why he’s been under the radar.

        • That doesn’t matter too much if your good and camp which he did as well as 7 on 7. I guess he was only 5’7 120 a year or 2 ago is a lot of the reason why.

  24. Back to talking about the lines I think you need at least 2 guys around 330 to play like a true NT to effectively run the 3-4. If you only have 3 d lineman to eat up blocks you like your guy in the middle to be a large space eater on running downs. Also are great to have for 4th down and goal line situations. It’s pretty hard to find guys like a Vince wilfork however.

    • If football is a go this year I think we will find out if that’s true. Whittley is only good for 3-5 plays at a time and our next largest is Skelton at 302. I think using tall athletic guys in the 270-290 range and getting rid of traditional DE (245-265) you will end up with a net mix of weight and speed that forces olinemen to use great technique. Proof will be in the pudding cause we don’t have the personnel for a traditional 3-4 line.

Edit: Good summary of 3-4 variations. I don’t think we can play Okie at all but eagle or under are closer. For the college game our DE are large and our nose will be undersized. This personnel size would never work in the NFL but it might be alright in college.

      https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2007958-nfl-101-the-basics-of-the-3-4-defensive-front

      • Our DEs are normal size for a 3-4 but large for a 4-3. We lack multiple true NTs is my point. Our DEs aren’t replacements for an undersized. Tibs has also ran some 2 man fronts if I remember correctly.

        • 275-290 6-3 is normal for NFL 3-4 DE. Is that really normal in college?

Edit: I was day dreaming about having Paea or Edwards as nose tackles only to realize they were only 300 lbs. We need some serious monsters.

  25. Just to document rating changes before they happen.
    Vidlak:
    247 composite 2* rated 0.7782
    247 regular rating = 79

Rivals rating = 2*, 5.2. (I dont remember a Rivals rating even existing 10 days ago when I last looked)

Will be curious to see how and when these numbers move around.

    • Are part of the rankings driven by offers? With him committing I’m guessing even if he has a really really good senior season teams won’t offer him knowing he is committed to an in state school that he seems to be really excited about. I’ve seen that happen with other players that commit early so their offer sheet looks weak. Maybe 247 does their own research (sarcasm) and doesn’t look around at which programs are interested.

Im looking forward to watching how the TE position is utilized this year. At 6-6 we have 2 big targets in Quitoriano and Musgrave but also would like to see some double tight power sets with some straight run it down your throat attitude. Hopefully the oline jells because there will be some nice options available with these two.

    • My favorite part about those sets is they also create a play action. If you can rip off a few 5+ yard runs with TE holding up LB the defense gets completely opened up for a TE slip to the flat or a TE post up the gut. Two dudes with hands and size just run both with a streaking wide out. Our skills positions could all be really good this year so they should be able to create opportunity for each other as defenses adjust.

      • I think it they’ll be able to do the same kind of stuff they did last year with togia. The PA flood rollout to the better receiving TE who I assume will be musgrave this year. Quitoriano is a beast at blocking for a TE but is a sneaky good receiver. I’ll be interested in how the depth chart shakes out at this position.

        • Be nice to see some red zone jump ball TD’s with these 2. Especially against Stanford who always seems to have that guy that does it to the beavs.

Oh you mean the clear offensive pass interference that the refs just allowed? The guy was clearly boxing the guy out like he’s playing basketball. That was some bullshit!

Thanks for the reprieve from politics, Angry. Was becoming a major turn off…. Also Granny Beaver (my mom) says thanks again for the orders. She is willing to take on bigger orders if she can get the fabric for it. Just message her on her Etsy. Sunday she took an order for 30 masks from a restaurant in Brookings fixing to open up. I like that it keeps her busy and not stressing about everything that’s going on. Stay safe my Beaver Friends.

    • Granny Beaver is OK in my book!!
Ordered 8 masks on Monday and received them today. Masks are exactly as pictured on Etsy and quality seems fine.

PS: I made sure to mention learning about her on AB, wouldn’t want her to wonder where to send the carrot commission.

      • Commission ha! She’s keeping it all. she lets me know when you guys/gals mention this site. Thanks again!

    • Very good points here. Basically, the big tech companies are trying to take advantage of the urgency and panic around COVID to advance the corporate strategies that were getting pushback from before the virus (due to concerns about privacy, unfair competition, removing humanity from various tasks, etc.) To me, “smart homes” are a perfect example of this, where the corporations have way more to gain than consumers do, and they were pushed endlessly on people with pretty limited market uptake.

In my professional life, I have access to a lot of what the top consultants and business publications put out, and they’ve been touting “the internet of things” ad nauseum for the last several years. What they completely ignore is that there’s little relative value to consumers in many of the applications they talk about. Sure, your fridge may be able to tell you when it’s almost time to buy more milk, but that’s not a difficult task in the first place. You save two seconds, but the data multiplex gets access to your consumption habits, where it had much less before. Maybe the fridge will even place a grocery delivery order for you for apples when you’re out. But the minimum-wage teenager at the store picking out your apples cares way less about the quality of what you’re getting than you do. Don’t be shocked if it all shows up at home bruised are less than 100% edible.

Be wary of anything Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc. try to push on you. I’ve already started buying things through vendors outside Amazon. It’s way easier now than it used to be with many of them offering free shipping. Yes, I may just be giving my data to other sellers instead, but distributed data=distributed power. Knowledge is power.

        • Right now I’m just trying to buy from other retailers. Amazon’s prices are rarely any better, so the only thing they’re offering is convenience.

For kids sports equipment, I use Sideline Swap.

          • 2
            1

Totally, THIS! I try to avoid Bezos as much as possible, mostly just for weird work related things I can’t get easily otherwise. My wife hasn’t bought anything from Amazon in more than 2 years.

        • I’d say this is more a personal preference thing for me. Two reasons:

They owe their existence to the Fed. They grew revenue for years at a crazy rate with no profits by borrowing at low rates. Sort of the China strategy where you play a long game with easy money to kill off your competition. They didn’t start making money until AWS took off, but that’s entirely separate from the business model they grew for years with no profitability.

Also, I just don’t want monopolies. Competition is good for everyone.

I will grant them that they singlehandedly dragged retail into the future.

    • That’s not to say there isn’t some value in a crisis like this accelerating certain societal changes. Just that we need leaders and citizens who are willing and able to consider the long-term consequences of the changes we make in reaction to this virus.

    • 2
      1

I’m surprised by the Amazon hate. It’s Capitalism done right. Until 2014 they had little lobbying and were built by pooling capital for a greater cause (lower prices, faster shipping, cloud servers, drone shipments, etc). They have pushed the envelope. Most employees say it’s tough but rewarding. A few complain, but it’s possible they’re just not cut out for it or exaggerating. Or it’s possible Amazon has problems on that front. Without hard proof and taking the source into account it’s hard to be sure what’s up. If they are abusing employees not cool, but in terms of pooling capital for the greater good of society they’re incredible at it.

        • Is it really though? If Bezos liquidated his assets (I know that’s not how shit works) he has enough money to conpensate all 800,000 Amazon employees $25 an hour for 300 weeks . I think Amazon can afford benefits, decent pay and less shitty conditions.

      • Here’s a list to get you started…
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Amazon#Direct_selling

Anti worker and anti union are big issues for me.
Not paying taxes? There’s a problem.
Pressuring small communities to give him further tax breaks for server farms that employ next to zero employees for peanuts.

Over and above that I would argue that society isn’t really better off from anything he has done. Putting main street businesses in downtowns across America out of business is a good thing? What would your town look like without small business? Pricing generally isn’t better on Amazon than other places. Unless you’re talking about Chinese knock-offs. So you can get something in two days (although not now)? Why is he better than Sam Walton? Sam Walton at least employs people in local communities.

Providing a vast array of different goods in one place and making them available to people in non-metro areas and creating server farms/infrastructure/backbone for thousands of websites are about the only positive I can think of for society. Not sure that the first wouldn’t have been taken care of the internet in general, hell Sears did the same thing 100 years ago, the second I’m not sure about but someone would have, and possibly without all the other BS.

        • and just to make sure you can get away with it, buy the biggest newspaper in the nation’s capital for a personal photon shield

        • Amazon has a large and growing distribution network that employs people in local comunities, in addition to the delivery service company seeding they’re trying to do.

          • Um, not really. Unless you consider mostly gig type workers employed. They do have a small network of staffed drivers. Very small. And UPS FedEx USPS are actually local staff (with benefits in most cases.)

          • Those warehouse jobs he recently raised them all to 15/hr, in Oregon that’s basically minimum, and the jobs are grueling. He also is anti union and apparently anti toilet by some reports.

The dude is not some great societal benefactor. He’s not a good dude.

      • Any idea if this means hotels/rentals can reopen? I would imagine that would dictate how large the tourist crowd gets. Fortunately for you, the coastal counties are opening at the same time to take away some of the tourists. Although Jefferson county got rejected, so you’ll be getting people who would have gone there coming down to Bend for their central Oregon fix.

I’ve heard people in portland saying Dammit I was gonna go hang out on the Rez for Memorial Day and now I can’t!

        • We have open hotels so I’m not really sure what’s going on there. Air bnbs, Craigslist and camping will exist.

          • I got worried when I saw people seeing “Reopening!” and getting all excited like we’ll be back to normal. What it’s going to be is no events, no music, and people wanting to hang out but restaurant staff will have to play Covid Cops. The weather is going to turn to crap later on Saturday which kills outdoor seating. I bet we’ll see more groups of people wandering around and more mountain bikers a Phils.

          • I’ve been getting a bunch of estimate requests for covered outdoor additions and questions about the best ways to modify existing outdoor seating so it can be used in inclimate weather.

      • Dancers are required to wear masks over their exposed body parts, must wipe down with barbasol between solo performances and keep a layer of plexi-glass between them and the customer at all times. But other than that it’s back to business as usual.

That sucks for all 250 people in Morrow county but I’ll tell you what, Heppner is one Corona-infested filth hole. I saw a guy shake somebody’s hand there, can you believe that shit?

    • I hope they open up camping by Memorial Day. I am going to go and if the campgrounds are closed that will make finding a dispersed spot harder

        • Yeah, I know that, I always camp on BLM and forest service land. What I am saying is there will be even more pressure on those lands if more campgrounds don’t open. And I am afraid more people will start using my favorite spots

    • LA Pine is more like LA Shit these days.

Naw he’s just living in reality…. just because you disagree doesn’t mean that his points are shit… you all realize that everyone will likely come into contact with COVID at some point in their life… lockdown was being used to slow down the spread not eliminating it… so at this point now that the hospitals are prepared why are we still waiting… just delaying the inevitable while simultaneously trashing the economy… it doesn’t really feel like a win in that sense

          • I don’t disagree with you at all…we should open. LAPine is still nuts these days.
My stance: once the weather gets nice, you’re not keeping people inside. So might as well open up and the people who want to stay in will do it. My guess is once we open we see a ton more cases, though, and more people will want to stay in, so there’s that…

My base case: we open, people return to work, people get sick, everyone voluntarily stays inside.

          • This is the only thread I’ve read recently, sounds like I missed many other comments…. I echo the same thoughts as you… I feel like we almost needed the lockdown to scare people into thinking about it. A lot of times folks ignore things, but there is no way to ignore a change in your daily life… I feel like it could have been shorter but it was effective… like you said I expect the people who are scared or brainwashed into being scared will stay at home even with the order lifted… this is a net gain as less people will be out… I always felt with general awareness we could of had the same results but good luck, sadly I feel a lot of people aren’t that bright

My brother lives in Sunriver and said the airbnb’s filled up some time ago. He said the locals see the boltholers on the sidewalks, don’t move aside and glare at them. That’ll send ’em home!

  29. I saw an article saying that bama and tcu agreed to play each other if their pac 12 games are cancelled and saying ok. St. Should have a backup plan for their game against the Beavs.

    • Great GPA, okayish tackler, seems to keep his eyes on the play alright. Hips looked kinda stiff in coverage. Gets away with pass interference well. Definitely seems like a walk on. Couldn’t find any ratings on him.

        • There are no split scholarships in football at the D1 level. Football is what’s called a “head count” sport, you are either on full scholarship or nothing. Head count sports are mens; football and basketball for women, head count sports are volleyball, basketball and tennis. Other sports, like baseball, soccer, softball are called “equivalency” sports and can chop up their scholarships.

          • Typically, walk-ons are entitled to the same medical, training, dining, and equipment benefits as scholarship athletes

          • What OJ said is true. Also, in cases where a scholarship athlete leaves the program early, their leftover scholarship money isn’t immediately converted into a new scholarship spot. There’s something like a full term that has to pass before it can be given to another athlete. In those instances, coaches are allowed to take that leftover unused scholarship money and split it up amongst their non scholarship athletes to assist with tuition/room/books/etc.
So those PWO guys are usually first in line to get some of those leftover dollars each term. Also, if a PWO athlete has been in the program for 2 years, they can be converted to scholarship without affecting the annual 25 per class rules or 85 total scholarship head count. So there are some benefits, but you also have to trust coach will do the right thing because nothing is guaranteed.

          • Right NB. If they get hurt the trainers attend to them, they have access to weight rooms and are expected to adhere to weight lifting standards, get issued the same gear although usually last in line. Training table during camp, but that usually stops once the game schedule begins. All the scholarship kids know who the walk-ons are and in some programs there is a caste system. Would hope JS doesn’t allow that, but it’s human nature.

    • PWO is a new made up term to make parents and athletes feel better. Once they blow the whistle on the first day of practice , sorry you just another walk-on. No scholarship, few if any reps, no training table… nada.

      • Exactly, and much better than being called “cannon fodder” as was a Stanford walk on I worked with.
The guy was smart enough to leave the team after discovering a coaches “cannon fodder” note!

        • My son played D1. He felt bad for the walk ons, would smuggle them bananas and chocolate milk from the players lounge. Walk-ons weren’t issued the door code. If a walk on took his own banana and chocolate milk it could be considered an “extra benefit” not allowed the general student body and could cause an NCAA violation. Crazy eh?

There are some great stories of walk-ons becoming stars but they start out way behind the eight ball. Position coaches that recruited the scholarship kid have a vested interest in making them successful, so they can take credit for being a great recruiter.

          • 1
            1

Yeah, I know one guy that took a year off to train before even attempting to be a walk on at UO, he then redshirted and eventually got a scholarship, became a starter, even got drafted and had a 7-8 year NFL career but it was a long path.

          • I’m friends with the family of one of our current walkons. Was recruited by the previous staff and they said he would be put on scholarship after 2 years, but then the staff left along with GA’s departure. All verbal agreements disappeared with them. It especially sucks for families in that situation, paying out of state tuition.

The situation with team issued gear is pretty crappy too. They are basically walking mannequins for Nike. Walkons have to check out gear on game day and must wear it throughout warmups and the game, but then have to turn it all back in after the game. They’re not allowed to take anything home with them or wear any team issued gear outside of game day, unless they buy the gear for personal use.

          • NB, that must be a new rule. When I was there everyone on the team got all the exact same equipment and swag. Walk ons just didn’t get training table or books, but did get the same academic support.

They did get food during fall camp know that I remember.

    • That doesn’t make any sense to me. It’s their “composite” rating that went up, which is supposed to be the average from all industry ratings sites.

But his actual 247 and Rivals ratings have not changed and both are 2 star with the same grade he had earlier this week.
How does the composite trend upwards with no change in the source data?
Unless there’s a 3rd mystery site out there that bumped him up to 4* status?

      • My guess is their rating was updates but it only shows in the composite or something. Guessing he will be an 81/82 sometime soon on their internal score. As far as I can tell they operate with pidgeons and black magic to update and make ratings.

    • I’m going to have to rewire my brain. When I read this my first thought was “Seth still has eligibility?!” Second thought was: “Lane and Seth…makes sense.”

  30. I read an article recently that suggested that if the P-12 doesn’t play and the SEC/Big 12 does the NCAA will have to let the NFL caliber players transfer to those schools for their last season in college. I hadn’t thought about that possibility yet. Luck O’ the Beavs….Jemar Jefferson to Georgia?

        • Rednecks killed a black kid. A football player no less.
          I can’t see Jefferson going there………..

My friend lives in GA. He said it’s not pretty down there right now.

          • White men shoot unarmed black “bandit” in A southern county known for past “good ole boy network” in law enforcement. You’re right, nothing to see here…please keep driving by, no questions, please.

          • Who are you talking to about “nothing to see here”?
I’m asking about angrys post about a Georgia football player who was killed by a white guy. I’m searching the internet and not see anything about a Georgia football player being killed by a white guy.

      • 1
        1

The college I picked was just a hypothetical, but I think you get the idea. Great players may not want to sit out this season if their school does not play. NCAA may open the door for them to transfer.

    • I was just thinking about how lucky we’ve been not to have any OLBs transfer. I don’t want Rashed to leave. That would be so lame.

    • NCAA would allow “good” players to transfer to SEC or Big-12? Would that, perhaps, goad Pac-12 and the states wherein Pac-12 teams are located to get a move on? Bundisliga starts today. BBC Radio 4 program (I’ve given up on all US media- not that I ever tried) – one of those tiresome interviews about ‘how are you getting on with the crisis.” There was the usual drivel but a man said, ‘not well at all. It should be in the Magna Carta that Englishmen have the right to see sports 7 days a week.”

      • That’s a good point. The article I read was entirely speculative, but how could the NCAA prevent players from transferring if their university chose to not participate in a sport? It’s going to be chaos if it’s not a complete opening back up.

  31. Tomorrow is world whiskey day. A holiday I can get behind. Planning to buy something new I haven’t tried before to add to the collection. Any recommendations?
Not looking to go super high end. Just something around $60 or less. There’s plenty of good stuff in that range I haven’t tried.

    • My local shop didnt have the McKenna or 8 Seconds in stock unfortunately.
Did pick up the Four Roses Small Batch somebody on here mentioned a week or so back. Looking forward to breaking into it here in a few minutes.
There another one I was hoping to find, a label by Bob Dylan made in Tennessee. Heaven’s Door. It supposedly rates pretty well and the label looks cool. Anybody tried it?

      https://static01.nyt.com/images/2018/04/29/business/29Taste/29Taste-facebookJumbo.jpg

        • That Four Roses is very good. The Eagle Rare used to be one of the best deals around, then it got popular like the W.L. Weller 12 year. 3 years ago you could get it for $25, now if you can even find it, it’s likely $100 or more.

        • if you don’t mind a bottle with a couple of ounces out of it, I’ll send you a bottle of eagle rare. Its not even a good mixer.
Woodford is excellent, they have one of the few rye’s I like. Double oak is good, very heavy flavor.
Have you tried Bulleit yet? Their 10 year is one of my favorites. Also if you can find it Rogue dead guy whiskey is pretty good and local. They have a stouted whiskey that id like to try.

          • Maybe it’s one of the cheaper lines of ER. They’re supposed to have some pretty good high end stuff, but I’ve never tried any of it.
I havent tried the Bulleit, but did have the Knob Creek Special Reserve. My brother got it for me for my 40th. It didnt last long. Packs a punch too. Think it’s up around 60% alcohol or something like that.
My wife got me the Dead Guy Whiskey several years ago. I didnt care for it too much, but it could have been a bad year. It was like 10+ years ago. Came in a really cool bottle though.

I’ve been reading about this High West Whiskey that I’ve liked. It’s located in Utah of all places. Their main sales come from blends they make from other big distillers’ products. They have a huge variety of blends and they have really made their blending a science. Definitely would recommend checking them out, and the price is usually pretty reasonable.

          • Other then whiskey, gin is my other favorite. Sloe gin and gin and tonics are my summer month drinks.
Rogue makes a gin that is finished in pinot barrels, it has a pink hue to it. Its very good.

World gin day is June 13.

          • I was drinking gin last night. Agree, it’s pretty good for the more summer time. Haven’t tried much more than Aviation and Tanq though.
Tequila has been my recent area of experimentation. There’s alot of interesting stuff out there in the tequilas and other mezcal.
If you like whiskey, try picking up some anejo. It’s aged in used oak whiskey barrels and picks up some of those more smokey flavors. Almost too much to keep on top of. So many options with spirits right now

          • Try Plymouth gin if you get a chance. And if you happen to go to California you can get Plymouth Navy Strength which is 57%. Unfortunately you can’t get it in the northwest, its not on oregons approved list, and I’ve never found it in Washington, Idaho or Wyoming. And I’ve looked a lot.

I am cautiously hopeful that the season is played without the Okie St game, delayed start for all…to allow Beavs to settle into a grove with 2 nonconference games they should win. After that, I think the beavs could be the surprise feel good story of the Pac 12 and maybe the nation with Confernce title and perhaps Rose Bowl.
    My reasoning is due to
    1) a truly mobile (not dual threat) qb that can extend plays without running downfield
    2) a qb with real game moxie, unlike anyone since Matt Moore
    3) maybe the best set of linebackers since Seigler/Barnett days
    4) A healthy JJ means home-run offensive ability and quick scores
    5) A secondary that will get interceptions (Grant esp)
6)JS has his learning curve of trial and error behind him, and is still aggressive
    7) GA stench and MR stench is finally out of the locker-room, guys who are present are going to be all-in on JS and Tibs
    8) Rest of Pac North has major holes to fill in shortened window for preparation
    9) Tibesar/Blue/Machalczik are difference-making coaches in key areas
    10) Lindgren is a wizard with the offensive system that everyone is now comfortable in

Examine the Pac 12 North team by team:
6th Wazzu: no pirate, instant downgrade and no returning qb, project low tier 6th place finish
5th. Stanford: Shaw has no more McCaffrey or Love, no qb, no more magic and the defense isn’t close to what they used to be. Standford will finish 5th, this year will be the end of the Harbaugh/Shaw dynasty as it has finally passed, qb issues will continue on the farm
4th UW: No Coach Pete leaves UW without the killer instinct, Lake may be a fake, but he has a year to learn and will drop 1-2 key games due to the learning curve, new qb and new oline will be huge issues, different talent level without Chris Petersen in the coaches chair
3rd Cal: Injuries have been an issue for Wilcox era, new OC, no more LB who tackles everything leaves a shakier defense, qb questions for Cal again, Wilcox knocks on the door but can’t close the deal again as they finish 3rd
2nd. Oregon: Mario will be exposed without Herbert and no ready replacement, defense will keep them in games and Mario will try to play smash mouth physical offense, but it will be hollow and the Duck fans will despise the change as they lose 3-4 close games
1st. Oregon State: JS has the best d in the conference from start to finish, big play offense with JJ and Gebbia, injuries aren’t an issue for this year and the Beavs go into the Civil War riding high, already North champs and roll the deflated ducks in Reser as payback for 2008/2009.

Helton gets fired mid-season and the Trojans rebound to win the South, and the Beavs beat a 3 loss USC to go to the Rose Bowl.
Whit can’t find enough guys to replace all of his seniors and Utes drop back to the pack
Chip isn’t there yet and the bruins have inconsistent qb/defense all year long
Herm has the talent and pushes USC but can’t finish the deal, close second to USC
    UA is in shambles
Colorado has growing pains and struggles to win close ones

I really hope college football can bring back some normalcy after all of this madness of the past few months.
    Discuss….

    • “JS has the best d in the conference from start to finish”
Now, I’ve been on the Tibs bandwagon from the start, but best d may be overstating things. Still, I expect Beavs D to be in the top 3 in the PAC.

“Tibesar/Blue/Machalczik are difference-making coaches in key areas”
Hope you are right about Blue, there have been good indications lately. A couple more who may turn out to be “difference makers in key areas”: Cookus, Wozniak, and Bray.
Wozniak, especially, will pick up some props If Musgrave has the season many expect. Same for Bray if Ham spends even more time in the opposing backfield.

    • I like your optimism. One comment about your orange colored glasses, Beavs also don’t have a problem qb and the defense gave up a lot of points last year. I saw improvements and am hopeful but we have just as many questions as other teams.

      • I confess to yearly summertime orange colored glasses regarding Beavs football. I think I was predicting a Rose Bowl before GAs 2nd year lol. I can’t avoid it, like a yearly orange flu. I always get mocked by family about any predictions once the season begins. In some regards, I want the percentages and footballs gods to align in the Beavs favor at least one more time.

Proven/Unproven QB- I know but I need Gebbia to be the next better version of a matured Kellen Moore or Jake Browning but in an OSU uniform this year. I’ll go with that until proven otherwise…:) It’s not even summer yet and I need to hope for this, don’t crush me with harsh reality and keen observations based on facts and stats.

        • A well respected response. And don’t worry, I get into the same emotional traps as well! It’s always go Beavs and hey why not us next season!

    • I like it. A lot of good points about the rest of the division. With this whole thing the continuity of the staff is huge. The only one who has proven that they can get interceptions on a regular basis is Wright. Grant had that pick 6 against Washington but aside from that I don’t think he has any. Interceptions have been a problem for our D for at least the last 5 years. Moore started for 4 years I think and maybe had 1. That’s bad.

I think that they’ll be in the thick of things for the division this year but not sure they’ll pull it off. First year starting qb question Mark’s on the line and a bunch of new faces in the secondary. Next year I like the chances better with a experienced qb and depth behind him and another year for the for the juco secondary.

    • Won’t UO have some fast RBs returning? They have an LT that is one of the best in the nation and may be the first T taken in the draft. I think they can run while they develop a QB. 3-4 losses minimize sounds about right (1-2 on Cristobal, 2 for a new QB).

  33. I think the season may even start on time. I know the governor said end of September but delaying the start would be incredibly unpopular and politicians generally try to avoid those kinds of unpopular decisions. My fear has always been a mid season outbreak which would force a 2 week quarantine and throw the whole schedule into a logistical nightmare. Especially when the students come back in the fall a second wave seems highly probable. Don’t get me wrong, I am not hoping for any of this but it is what I have seen with the local epidemiologists best guess scenario model and lines up with what a lot of experts are saying.

    • I could totally see that happening. The Beavs get off to a hot start only to have the season cancelled. Then it would always be what if. Luck of the Beavs.

  34. Scuttlebutt over on the bennyshouse forums has Talia Von Oelhoffen commiting to OSU today. Would be a monster get for WBB if true

    • 10
      1

Saw oregon picked up a pretty good transfer from Maryland today. Their wbb recruiting has been pretty insane lately. It’s like they get jealous when an OSU program performs well and decide to pump a shitload of resources into their programs that they used to ignore. Didn’t work out so well in baseball but it has in wbb so far.

      • Mikesell is a great pickup for them, can’t deny that.

Huge props to Rueck and staff in landing Talia. 2 for 2 against Stanford in recruiting this year. Don’t think anyone would ever say that would happen with Van Derveer. Apparently she wanted to play PG which how OSU wants her vs wing at Stanford.

        • Mikesell, coming from Maryland, made me wonder what is going on there. Destiny left there, before she left OSU.

Turns out, it may just be the transfer portal thing. In discussing the move by Mikesell, a writer for ESPN says, “She was ranked No. 33 in her recruiting class by ESPN Hoopgurlz. Of the top 34 players in those rankings, 13 have entered the transfer portal within their first two years. That said, the writer points out that Mikesell is the third Terp to enter the portal recently.

I realize Rueck has lost some to the portal, but does his family approach make a positive difference here?

          Thoughts?

Oh, and what’s the future hold for Mark Campbell? And for ucks WBB?

      • “Didn’t work out so well in baseball but it has in wbb so far”

And yet we still have more “natties” than they dO :)

Beavers land another 5-star player…..that makes Mark Campbell’s statement to Katy Mac before leaving OSU to become an assistant at Oregon, even more RiDuckulous….He told Katy he was taking the job at Oregon because OSU would never be able to land 5-star players, blue-chip players. In your face Campbell, in your face!

        • 2
          5

Yeah, can you imagine a coach telling a blue-chip player like Katie Mac something like that. Pretty low-class thing to say to a player but considering the source, I guess that’s not too surprising. Love the fact that Rueck is doing a heck of a job getting the blue chippers now!

          • 3
            4

It looks like we have a Duck fan in Angry’s house. Why anyone would down vote the truth could only mean one thing….if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and down votes, it must be a schmuck!

      • >He told Katy he was taking the job at Oregon because OSU would never be able to land 5-star players, blue-chip players. In your face Campbell, in your face!

That’s why he said he left? Haha. Whatever lets you sleep at night, bro.

        • 3
          3

Nick and Diane McWilliams both told me that’s precisely what Campbell told Katie. I’m sure there were other reasons too, i.e. a boat load of cash, but the one reason that stuck in Katie’s mind was the 5-star, blue-chip comment. And I sleep just fine at night “bro”.

          • >And I sleep just fine at night “bro”.

I mean whatever lets Campbell sleep at night, not you.

But congrats, I sleep like shit.

          • 2
            1

Cake, sorry brother as I misinterpreted your comment. Have you ever tried some edibles for your sleeping issue? They really do work but when I use them, I only take 1/2 and it’s lights out. I could have used one last night though as I was up until 2:00 am. Again, sorry that I misunderstood your comment.

  35. Hey nicebeav anymore possible football commits soon or news on that front that you have? It seems to be the only exciting thing happening sports related.

        • Rueck might get the right combo of “We are family” athletes to get to final four, more “killer instinct” types on the way? Hate-to-lose, love-to-win, love-to-prepare-to-win(?).

    • I don’t know of any imminent commitments. Lots of rumors/crystal balls for Damir Collins to OSU, but who really knows. He’s still collecting offers and hasn’t publicly given a timeline for his announcement.

  36. I was of the opinion that we might not have a college football season (at least in the Pac 12) but I’ve changed my mind for reasons that might strike some as counter-intuitive initially.

I was checking out a recent Bloomberg Opinion piece on “the coming crash in higher education.” Well worth it if someone here can establish a link. Anyway, Covid is going to demolish the funding model higher ed has survived on for the last generation–out of state tuition and its international student variant. I have written about that in some of those earlier and fevered threads. Those folks pay 3-3.5x the in-state rate, which is how public higher ed has survived for at least 20 years in the wake of state budget cutbacks, perhaps 30-40 years.
In the post-Covid world parents will be keeping what’s called high-school direct students close to home. As the Bloomberg writer says (paraphrasing), if you live in New Jersey, why send your kid to Colorado when you can get by on the cheap by sending them to Rutgers. Put another way, Oregon kids will be going to Oregon schools, Washington too, etc., you get the picture. A financial bloodbath, compounded by the inevitable state appropriations cut besides.

Here, according to my theory, is where football comes in. Anyone paying close attention to the enrollment scene in higher ed knows that admissions officers are postponing decision dates, down payments for dorms etc., fearing that if they demand a commitment now the students won’t sign up. Yields everywhere, even the Ivies, are in trouble. What to do? Create some campus excitement; provide an attractant for on-campus residency and the attendance tuition, in state and and out of state–football. I can see enrollment officers and their presidents besieging Governors offices later this spring and early summer telling them that they have to have on campus education and co-curricular activities to keep the institutions afloat.

It finally dawned on me why the local TV stations are flooded with PSA ads. They can’t sell ad time to anyone. The “awkward silence” one is the most annoying.

    • My wife is a data analyst for a couple different ad agencies with some fairly large clients. She’s way busier than normal as national companies have upped their budgets to sell their shit online.

For the local small businesses, that’s probably true.

  38. Josh Worden up with a podcast interview with Steven Kwan. Some good stuff on meditation, positive affirmation, and a very interesting take on negative thoughts.
Kwan remembers Andy Peterson’s comment at the end of the ’17 CWS, after the loss to LSU Pete told Kwan to “never forget this feeling”.

Worden continues to do a very good job with these interviews, worth the time to listen.

  39. @angry-did you purchase any Moderna?

“Moderna skyrockets 39% after its early trial for a coronavirus vaccine produced antibodies in all 45 patients (MRNA).“

        • Crispr Therapeutics and Nanostring Technologies. Both on the cancer front…Crispr (gene editing) is some of the most fascinating technology out there. Read up on it. It’s amazing. Some potential to covid with it, too, though that’s not why I bought it. I bought it way back.

Editas is also worth watching. Personally don’t own it (don’t care for the CEO).

Not a recommendation to buy anything, of course.

          • I find Crisper technology fascinating and terrifying at the same time. Not that terrifying is necessarily a bad thing. There are just endless outcomes and potential for unintended consequences. It really is a new frontier

          • Yeah, that’s all new and revolutionary technology. Orwell was afraid of TVs.

There’s merit to all that, but there’s also massive disincentive to use things incorrectly.

I’m a bit more concerned about drones than Crispr.

          • Andlov, I look at balance sheets, though.

Cspr has a operating margin of 16, whereas DTIL has an operating margin of -392. That’s a negative. Return on equity of 10% vs -104%. Etc. It’s not all about the technology. Management is very important, which is why I don’t really like Editas. I just follow it.

Most bioTechs will go to 0. It’s a terrible, cash burning industry. Crsp is best in class, IMO. Good management, profitable, well run balance sheet, and cutting edge technology.

    • Heavy insider selling in Moderna says this is all nothing. Also, Trump’s vaccine czar is a shareholder. Not suspicious at all.

  40. I know nothing about college wrestling, but our recent coaching hires all seem to be well received. Anybody wrestling fans here who can comment?

    • The program just needed a change. With wrestling becoming the most common sport to be cut in college, it’s important to keep the program competitive. It treaded water for a while early in zaleskys run but fell off in recent years. Not competitive at all on the national scene.

We’ll see if the issue with the program is the talent or the coaching.

The new coaches have the pedigree to make a winner. Wrestling is one of the few sports, coaches can get in and mix it up with the team.

    • Ya those hires are sure to bring in young talent that OSU has missed on, especially martinez ( 4x all american and 2x champion).

        • But, will younger pitchers remove their cap and bow to any senior player they HBP?

Is that even true about Korean baseball?? Heard it somewhere (maybe JoeBeav?), wonder if anyone here knows if it is actually the practice in Korean ball.

  41. Looks like Schiff can recruit! All those assholes talking shit about Mr Scott Reuck losing his hold on the conference have to be feeling dumb today as he lands the greatest recruiting class of all time. I’ve heard the UConn and Baylor coach have told the NCAA not to schedule the Beavers for tournaments because they don’t want to play this team! West Coast powerhouse dynasty FIRMLY intact! Eat shit haters!

  42. I was wondering why people were saying SV had a weak arm…

Hidden Valley head coach James Powers on @SamVidlak7
“The strongest part of his game is definitely his arm strength and accuracy. He has a cannon and has had it ever since he was a little kid.”

    • I said that based on his junior film. He threw with a good amount of Arc and I timed some of the throws and his fps was 10-15% lower than Millen and Kitna. Could have just been him using touch. He had more power on recent Twitter videos though. I’m not worried about it, by the time he plays he will have years of weight room and practice.

      • 1
        1

His coach says he’s had a cannon since he was a kid.
I’ll have to watch the film again, but I don’t remember seeing arm issues.
Call me crazy but I like him better than Millen in terms of pure QB skills. Millen is a freakier athlete who can beat people that way, but he doesn’t look as refined as an all around QB.

        • Take it with a grain of salt. Having a cannon at his level isn’t the same as having a cannon in college.

His film has some evidence of arm strength that is at least good enough, though.

        • 1
          1

It’s like kinesthetic throwing/ quarterbacking when he makes a completion; an intuitive level of accuracy. Can’t teach that.

He’s got 2 years to gain weight and get stronger. No problem.

        • I mean your high school.coach should be selling you hard in all aspects and is gonna be biased. I just based it on what I measured. There’s no lines on the Twitter videos so I can’t say if those really do have more zip. He also may have been throwing with touch to clear defenders or cause he knew his receivers couldn’t take bullets to the chest. There’s lots of extrapolation we can do but the data point was that on similar throws he had 10-15% lower velocity compared to Millen or Kitna.

That said Vidlak is my favorite prospect in this class. I think he has the skills, smarts and chip to be a great QB. He reminds me of a more gifted JS.

Millen obviously has the physical skills and throws a good ball but I see more holes in his film where he has room to improve. I think Millen has a higher ceiling but I think Vidlak is more likely to maximize his potential. All of this is based on almost nothing so many grains of salt.

  43. My alma mater, a small D1 school, just announced they’re cutting baseball and lacrosse, and they’re further reducing athletic scholarships by 45 over the next five years.

Non-revenue sports are going to get decimated by this.

    • 1
      1

we won’t recognize higher ed in a year or two. Sports is just a part of that equation. And who predicted this so long ago? Our fearless leader, AB.

      • Haha.

This is a black swan that popped the bubble; I thought it would be due to price not a virus. College was simply too expensive for what it was. In a way corona is just accelerating the inevitable. My guess now is the government forgives current outstanding student loans and/or makes future higher ed “free.” One of those two things will happen because that former trajectory was just not sustainable. The new trajectory won’t be sustainable, either, but it will buy time.

P.S. My lady’s Alma mater’s board of directors threw out all contracts and got rid of tenured professors. School might close entirely. I’ve seen students are suing colleges for a tuition refund, too, because they didn’t get the classroom experience. Those will be interesting lawsuits.

        • My business has run pretty much as normal, with some modifications to employees wearing masks, social distancing squares, limited customer counts etc.

When this first went down people were super chill and go with the flow. The people now coming through the doors are like first time fliers with no idea how to follow direction, or worse, getting pissed that there are rules in place for everyone’s safety.

All the Karen’s and Chad’s are out in full force with little time for others

          • No shipping. I do wonder how gyms will be able to reopen though. You’d think something like a dedicated person for cleaning.

I’ve been to my bar twice since Friday, it’s an odd “we know this is a bad idea” vibe.

3 bars in Bend have already gotten fined for not following the rules.

        • Timing for a second wave would probably be in the fall, no? What would that do for sports? Would they start or keep playing as long as players aren’t infected?

          • Nobody knows if heat kills this thing yet, but just based on other viruses we can assume that and say Fall.

Whether they play is a good question. People have said NCAA sports won’t b/c of issues with those players being on campus, and that pro players might. I have no clue on that. With the NCAA, I think the only way to play in that scenario is to have players sign waivers they want to take the risk and then limit travel big time/amend schedules. Then of course testing before they’re back on campus. Sounds difficult to pull off, so they might just cancel.

        • Angry,

Article in GT/someplace that OSU campus has a few hundred students on campus now – internationals who couldn’t get home – some other reasons but I don’t recall what they are. There is a basic food service for them. So if it is said that the football players can’t return to campus since other students can’t . . .

          • My daughter’s first year of college happens to be during a pandemic. OSU is still providing a portal for students to connect with other students/potential roommates for the dorms this fall.

      • Whenever I’ll be going back out for beers, I’m thinking I’ll be sticking to their outdoor space. I keep reading more and more about the spread happening in smaller, enclosed spaces that aren’t ventilated well. Since there’s no live music happening until Yahweh knows, hanging outside is fine with me. I do need my weekly trivia to start back up but I’m not sure how that will happen.

        • If heat and outdoor spaces are the anti-Covid fix, Bend will be in prime position until the rest of the state descends on it.

  44. Re: the earlier discussion of WBB, Mark Campbell, ucks, recruiting.
Multiple reports that Stanford grad transfer DiJonai Carrington, whose brother played FB for the phoolish phighting phils, has chosen Baylor over u of nike and U Conn.

ESPN had DiJjonai rated as the #2 grad transfer (behind Destiny); Campbell probably didn’t see her as that good, probably didn’t try to get her to follow her own brother to Eugene.

U of phil does seem, however, to focus more on grad transfers than many other schools. Anyone else see it that way?

    • True, but him playing there did give her a chance to check out the bling.

Slick Willie was running the show when Darren was bounced, Cristobal though was probably involved in the decision.

“”We will always consider Darren a Duck and support him in any way we can,” Ducks coach Willie Taggart said upon releasing Carrington. “We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

I looked at the tape of our recently committed 5 star wing. Pretty impressive — reminded me very much of Mick in the way she muscled her way to the hoop. It’s looking good for the next few years.

  46. Athletic department sent out a survey on reser and possible ideas for the westside renovations. It’s long but they are considering a lot of ideas.

My general thought is that capacity would be reduced with some more premium fan areas. New skyboxes plus some party decks in the corners and club seats. No more bleachers, similar seating to the eastside.

    • 6
      1

a reduction in capacity is a mandatory move. Here, for once, OSU caught a break. Their stadium is still a work in progress, not a white elephant in the making like Husky Stadium or Autzen. As future events will soon make clear, there will be a vast overcapacity in most college football stadiums. I’m not referring to the short term, like this fall, where some quick math shows that to keep a six foot distance, capacity will have to be reduced by 7/8ths. But longer term, regular season games’ attendance will look like some of those bowl games, or those mid week MAC games after Halloween. I think Reser’s sweet spot is somewhere in the 35-40k range.

One corollary effect– this new era will actually have the ironic (there’s that word again) effect of speeding an expansion of the college football playoff. one retardant to date is the complication of how to move these fan bases around the country to various venues on a week to week basis. Well, people aren’t going to go flying around like they used to and the issue will dissipate; the playoff will become, in effect, a studio show, which will suit the death star (ESPN) just fine.

Just had a member of the autoimmune group I run (and friend) pass due to organ failure from Lupus complications. Couldn’t get hydroxyclorquine since mid March due to Covid panic buying and government stock piling causing shortages. She was 34 years old and a mother of two.

Don’t want to make this political so all I will say is I am very angry and please try to be science literate with medications. Don’t take them or horde them without full studies and approvals because there are people who can die without them.

    • That’s just not right…My first wife has had lupus for 30+ years, and I remember when Plaquenil was the up and coming drug. I’ll make it political because it is…read a story yesterday that some gal in AZ called a pharmacy to obtain hydro after the Trump announcement, and they told her she couldn’t get it without a prescription. She replied, “Oh, I’ll just call a Republican pharmacy then..” and hung up.

      Condolences…

      • Yeah she had scripts just couldn’t get them filled. The group was pulling together old pills and such to send her when she went to the hospital 4 days ago. Her Lupus was more aggressive than average. A seriously shitty loss. The only upside is the kids will be financially fine. Doesn’t replace a mother though.

  48. I’ve now since seen the survey that OSU sent out re: the next Reser remodel. There’s one part of their package that, to me at least, is particularly attractive: sideline or red zone patios that you can just wander into IF you have a donor seat somewhere else in the stadium. I now sit on the new side, and on real hot days it would be nice to head over the “old” (about to become new) side and have the sun at your back, possibly in the shade of a roof. The one thing I told them about all the more extravagant options–suites, loges, “edge” seats and the like–the principal impediment to being able to plan around large group (here defined as 4+) options is the irregularity of kick off times. By that I meant not merely not learning of a game time until one week before you might invite some guests, but the complications attendant upon learning that a kick off is at (say) 11:30 a.m., or worse, 7:30 p.m. As William Shatner used to say on his old CPAP ads, “who wants that hassle?”

    • It seems like decks and areas for standing are becoming more popular. ASU has this feature I think, here’s some ridiculousness – https://sundevilstadium.asu.edu/

Decks makes sense for a future of declining attendance, cheaper to build, allows for more fluid response to attendance. I can see them being mostly empty on some games, full for CW for example. Seems like most Reser attendees don’t like standing though? I do, and I’d enjoy the option of decks.

      • A stated goal has been to make Reser useful to users from outside the athletic dept. Decks are a step in that direction, it seems. Decks would allow exhibit booths, white board teaching aides and such.
Y’all know I’m a standup kinda guy too, right?

    • That reminds me; hope JS selects “home team” side based on weather. When its hot, put the visitors in the sun next to the student section. When its cooler, put the Beavers there. Never understood why the team wears black AND sits in the sun…

Perhaps someone with tech skills can find it and post a link, but there’s an interesting story up on New York Magazine about “The Coming Disruption in Higher Education.” Author predicting a double digit drop in enrollment and registration this fall. The elite universities and big state schools will do alright–at least in the short term; they’ll just tap their wait lists. But farther down the food chain (e.g. the kid who normally would have gone to Western Oregon because he couldn’t get into OSU will now find room in Corvallis, but WOU takes the hit unless it can poach a prospect from, say, Linfield) it’s going to get ugly.

The other interesting aspect of the article is the future of big high-tech/academic marriages, like Apple/Stanford, Amazon/MIT, etc. Interesting read.

I’ve had my disagreements with Angry this spring but he’s been right on the big things: Riley was over-rated and higher ed as we’ve known it is history. Tenure–gone; sweetheart teaching loads–gone; athletics in jeopardy because the parent institutions will be in financial distress.

…At the same time, more people than ever will have access to a solid education, albeit one that is delivered mostly over the internet. …Of course, it will also make a handful of people very, very rich.

From the conclusion: There’s an opportunity for something like an AmeriCorps, a Peace Corps, or the Latter-Day Saints mission….if we’re trying to make lemonade out of lemons here, the opportunity might be to mature a generation of people who, when standing next to each other, aren’t focused on their differences…
It feels like a really wonderful opportunity to create a generation that develops greater cooperation, a comity of man, appreciation for what it means to be an American through some sort of social service.

        • The “tall poppy” (which gets cut down) syndrome comes out of Scandinavia, I think. Seems to me it’s more a cultural thing then an economic system like communism. People who stand out above the herd can get severely frowned upon in many settings — e.g. High School, or corporations, etc. Even in the most capitalist society!

        • This actually sounds a little like communism, which I’m willing to bet you think most everything sounds like anyway.

          Thanks for playing.

      • According to someone I message with occasionally who knows him, 247 said the ratings bump was because they re-reviewed his film.
I would imagine their review takes into account current offers at the time of review, rather than looking at the actual film.

        • So someone told 247 it’s about time to take a look at the film for the first time. It must be like when I have to request a policy review for my auto insurance. No once looks at it until I make them do so and then I realize I could have been saving money for a few months.

He’s still a project to me. No better than Gulbranson. No other P5 offers is a warning sign. Screams diamond in the rough Riley recruit. Gulbranson had at least 3 other P5 offers.

Millen is the guy with the most upside. He could come in and compete early. Hopefully they are still recruiting him.

        • Bill what is Millen’s GPA? If you want to talk projects, learning the playbook is arguably more important than athleticism… I think Sam will have no trouble learning it, Millen on the other hand

          • That’s what I was curious about. Sounds like he’s not a dummy either. I have to say, we wouldn’t have gone wrong with either of them. I am not seeing either of them as projects.

          • They both look incredibly accurate on tape and in their stats. The only differences that would make me rate Millen higher are his size/athleticism and the fact that he did all that at the top level in WA, rather than 3A Oregon ball. Competition doesn’t matter that much, but the physical traits give him a slightly higher ceiling.

          • Given that they offered Millen much earlier and waited quite awhile before offering Vidlak, I’m suspecting they knew Millen was not planning to accept the OSU offer and needed to get serious about signing the next guy in line.
Part of the delay in extending an offer to Vidlak was due to the Covid recruiting shut down too. They were supposed to see him in person so he could throw for the coaches during March, but that visit didn’t happen as the country went into lockdown mode.

Actually, I don’t think Riley would have recruited or signed a QB like this. Riley did pretty well with QB’s, but look at his history.

Jonathan Smith – Atypical, was an Erickson signee wasn’t he?
          Derek Anderson – standard, tall big armed recruit, well regarded nationally (FSU offer if I recall), Erickson recruit;
          Moore – from UCLA, Riley claimed he put more time into evaluating his film than any other QB he recruited, but it was clear he was big time talent;
          Moveau – Atypical, not sure how he wound up at OSU, anybody know?;
          Canfield – pretty well regarded pocket passer out of california;
Katz – strong armed, questionable decision making, accuracy, replaced by
Mannion – tall, big pocket passer….

I don’t think Riley would have found or appreciated Vidlak; he’s not the mold of the standard QB. And I don’t think Riley “strategically” found “diamonds in the rough,” I think recruits were often luck based on laziness, Riley not wanting to work hard, and low expectations from an AD and fan base because he wasn’t the 28 year losing streak.

          • Smith was a Riley recruit. He left at the end of Smith’s frosh year. Otherwise a good point. Smith may have just been best available to OSU at the time. We still didn’t have a winning season in like 27 years when he committed.

          • Moevao was a late commit in the legendary Class of 2006 that was mostly 2-stars and Riley family friends. Mau Nomani was our highest ranked recruit and really the only guys that panned our from the whole class were LaRocque, Kristick, Linnenkohl, and Roberson.

Our other QB was Kaulin Krebs, who we offered instead of Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick was a lock, but he had a bad game when Riley saw him in person, so we never offered.

          • …and that was the year I stopped seriously following recruiting.

Side note: there was a Blitz poster named CastorNation from way back then that was one of the best/most realistic posters on there. Was that anyone from here?

          • Riley missed Seneca Wallace and Colin Kaepernick, too. Seneca was even on campus.

That’s right. Good point. There were others, I think.
I’m sure every coach misses on QB. Moore stung the most because he was one of the best college QBs of all time, fit the Riley pro-style QB, and he wanted to go to OSU and would have if they offered. The other two I could understand more because they were runners, and Riley liked statues.

P.S. I was CastorNation. They banned me. Then I started AB.

          • Was there a specific offense that caused her to ban you? I don’t really know the story other than you have said you didn’t toe the company line and they didn’t like that in the old Blutz forum.

          • From memory, some of the old guard over there threatened to quit renewing their memberships if she allowed the “negativity”…then she caved of course.

There was a lot of “I didn’t pay to hear everything wrong with OSU” sentiment. And of course “this guy is a jerk/this guy is a Duck” etc.

        • If Millen has more physical talent and upside, and Vladik is some overrated 3A prospect, Millen should commit and beat out Vidlak…

    • I didn’t realize the Arizona schools’ athletic programs were so heavily subsidized by the universities. Also…

“Anywhere from 75 up to almost 85% of all revenues to our departments are derived directly or indirectly from football,” Oregon State athletics director Scott Barnes said. “Indirectly, I mean sponsorship dollars, multimedia rights, and then you’ve got your gate, your donations and whatnot. The impact of not playing a season is devastating. It would rock the foundation of intercollegiate athletics the way we know it. Frankly, I’m not trying to solve for that because it would be such a devastating circumstance that we’d almost have to get a whiteboard out and start over.”

This is poor management. Burying your head in the sand is no way to deal with tail risks (and frankly, this isn’t an exponentially low-probability scenario). When faced with uncertainty like we’re seeing right now, you have to ask yourself what the worst-case scenario is and have at least some idea of what you would do.

      • it’s easy to take a shot a Barnes about the lack of planning but the larger enterprise of which he is a part (higher education) has almost entirely proceeded blithely along for the last four decades without questioning the fault lines in its business model. Now that we’ve had an earthquake the cracks are huge and many will fall. The power 5 schools will survive this because of legislative bail outs but we will lose upwards of 20% of smaller schools before this new decade is out.

    • You also have to have a plan for the declining attendance and a future without full stadiums, even without the pandemic. Again, I think OSU could partner with its alumni and try to come up with a unique, forward looking way of delivering sports content to viewers. NuclearBeaver suggested publishing it to youtube as a means of delivery. The system seems currently set up for catastrophic failure.

BTW, in that espn link, the Navy uniforms look pretty good. Simple, even look like football uniforms…

    • It will host the trials, majority of Nationals, Pac 12s and endless other meets for the next 50 years. Will be fine. The old facility was a nightmare.

    • 5
      1

Nice roofline and facility, despite the Duck colors. Looks to me like their best upgrade yet. The basketball court is terrible, I’ve driven by the (mostly empty) baseball field and don’t find it special. The “football operations” center doesn’t integrate with the surroundings, though in isolation its not a bad building. More money than taste or restraint; that’s the Phil U way…

    • Small bonus, Beavs could load the non conf schedule with more home games. Couldn’t do AZ next year if it’s in March with MLB spring training.

      • The proposal is for the financial sustainability of college baseball moving forward. What does 10-14 days in Surprise cost the athletic department VS being home and having 3k plus in attendance at Goss for a series or 2 instead.

    • another example where the pandemic will force a change long overdue. The logic for the current college baseball schedule is the season runs concurrently with the winter and spring quarters, or spring semester as the case may be, even though 1/3 of the football season, for schools on the quarter system, occurs before classes begin. School being out has a positive effect for student attendance at bowl games. A case could be made that college baseball should start even later, say the first week in April.

This I find to be pretty interesting, when it comes to places that host social media.
This study found that nearly half of the accounts that post information about Covid19 are bot accounts. Nameless/faceless accounts that don’t represent the real population, but push specific viewpoints to make them appear more well supported than maybe they really are. And the viewpoints are often there to essentially troll readers and get them to fire back, increasing division amongst the population. The existence of bot accounts isn’t really all that surprising, but the influence they have is a little concerning.

I remember reading some interview with Mark Cuban recently. He was proposing that social media sites need to start requiring users to tie their account to their actual name/identity. Not that they would have to necessarily share their identity publicly, but they would need to have some sort of way to trace users back to an actual person vs a program that was set up to push floods of information onto these platforms.
It’s often easy to spot these bot accounts if you spend any amount of time on social media and observe trends in messaging. For instance, I’m on twitter alot and often search for “oregon state” news. And often i see the same exact non-osu messages being spread regarding political topics, but it’s like the same message gets copy/pasted into hundreds of accounts all saying the same thing. And the accounts always look very generic and have roughly the same number of followers as people they follow(they often follow each other only, and nobody else)
It’s amounts to a slow and deliberate attempt to brainwash the population and I feel these social media platforms really need to find a way to get a handle on this stuff more effectively. Hope that isn’t taken as a political argument, even though I know those parallels can be drawn.

    https://twitter.com/NPR/status/1263400594338918401?s=19

    • I don’t think its a political argument, its an ethics and communications argument to me. It should apply to everyone, regardless of party politics. It also seems to me they could flag bot accounts and posts; it wouldn’t prevent people from reading them, they could ignore them if they choose though or read with the understanding of the source.

      • I think flagging the accounts is one of the central issues. There are so many of these accounts and identifying them can be tricky. There are patterns that can be detected to identify them, but no pattern recognition is perfect. And as soon as an account gets flagged, 10 more can easily be created to replace it. It’s an uphill battle.
When I come across obvious bot accounts, i usually block or mute them to filter out the noise, but there are always more.
Honestly, it makes me want to abandon twitter altogether, even though I do find the platform useful overall.

  51. BASEBALL…..related.
Is anyone else listening to the podcasts being put out by Josh Worden?
The recent 40 minutes with Jack Anderson will give ya more insight into Pat Casey and his ability to use different means to motivate and build different personalities. Anderson also gives a picture of his interaction with Arkansas fans.

The story of Jack’s start with the Beavs and his friendship with Matt Dahlen is worth your while, IMHO.

  52. Interesting, UNC plans to start classes early and finish by Thanksgiving to get ahead of a potential second wave.

That’s honestly a plan OSU could follow. Start a couple weeks early and finish by Thanksgiving. And then hope that there are effective treatments or vaccine ready for winter term.

    • Sounds like the Universal Studios theme park in Florida is planning to open as soon as June 1st. The plan involves a soft opening to locals and passholders only, to start out.
I’m curious how many people decide to actually go in the early weeks. Will be hard to know percentage wise since the population if potential visitors is diluted by the soft opening.

      • It’s a different world out there. Perceptions of how things are going are much much different in states that didn’t go into lockdowns for a long period of time.

A casino guy said, you’ll get three groups. The first wave is people who will go no matter what. The second wave is ones who wait and see and then go. The third wave is the visitor who comes when the all clear sign is on. He said the first two waves combined are small, maybe 1/3 of total visitors.

        • I’d imagine places like theme parks will have a harder time drawing in customers, mostly because they depend on families for ticket sales. I could see adult singles/couples taking the risk more than I would imagine parents with children. There will be some families, but most parents are still probably pretty cautious.
I actually had to have my 6 year old accompany me on a quick trip to the store tonight, because I couldnt leave her at home and she didnt want to wait in my truck. I didnt even realize it till we were finished with our purchase that this was her first time inside a place of business since school was let out in early March. 2 plus months where the only structure she has entered was her own home. Sortof bizarre to think about, since I’ve personally been out and about, but always traveling solo.

        • Down votes? Do people want to be in isolation forever or do people think infection rate will stay the same when restrictions are lifted? I’m confused.

          • there’s some analysis suggesting the rate of infection in the general population (defined as everyone not in a nursing home or care facility) is the same whether a lock down is in effect, or not.

          • 1
            1

Huh, well since it’s going to be tested I guess we will find out pretty obviously in 2-3 weeks. I don’t know of any vector that spreads less with more interaction so that doesn’t pass a basic logic test. The whole point of isolation was to buy time for the medical systems to prepare and understand covid. Hopefully that time was used well.

    • I think UNC stole that idea from Notre Dame. Regardless, the premise is to avoid having students head home for Thanksgiving, picking up the virus, and then heading back to campus spreading it even further. If all schools opened, say, in mid-August, weather would be better for football season, and an expanded playoff system could start the week after Thanksgiving and conclude on New Year’s Day.

    • I had seen this interview with him last month and routed it to tue twitter feed, but figured he was part of the 2020 class, like a late addition and possibly PWI.(i didnt watch the full interview)

I didn’t read the 247 story yet either, but sounds like he’s actually class of 2021. Not sure if that means scholarship or not though. Just don’t have time to look into it but if anybody knows, please share.

      https://youtu.be/ul_8EUnp5o8

  53. Thoughts on the proposed pac12 baseball tourney? Doesn’t seem like a money thing.

Could potentially steal a bid here and there for the conference.

Beavs would mostly benefit from this. If they are in good position to make the NCAA regardless of tourney, it’s a chance to get experience for role players and lightly used pitchers. If they are on the outside, it’s a chance to steal a bid.

Teams with secure bids don’t take the conference tourneys seriously so it helps their conference overall. Easy way to increase rpi.

    • I hadn’t seen anything published about a tournament but I love the idea. OSU is one of the programs that in retrospect could have benefited from such. When they had great teams, they would qualify for the field of 64, and the chips would fall where they may; in a few instances, with a trip to Omaha. But when they had marginal teams, league politics (infamously with the the UW coach) would conspire to keep them out.

As you note, a tourney would improve the best teams’ RPI, further enhancing the number of teams from the conference who make the field of 64. Now, the Pac 12 can only count on three, which is ridiculous, while the SEC can count on 8.

Of course, the issues remain on where to hold the tournament (I think a Triple AAA field in northern California or Nevada makes most sense) and how many teams to qualify. I think even the SEC holds out a few from the tournament. Field of 8 would seem to be a minimum, though you could eliminate 1 (getting you to 10) and give the top two teams in regular conference play a bye to the second round.

      • It was posted on the Oregonian site.

8 teams in Scottsdale at the giants facility.

Sec has more teams. Max teams getting in from pac12 is 7. One over half the teams. Tourney could get that 7th bid yearly.

        • Arizona would work for a tournament the last week in May, but if in fact the season is to start later, daytime baseball outside in Arizona in late June or July won’t fly,

    • on the other hand, as Birx announced today, the hospitalization rate in this country has dropped dramatically, probably because everyone is clued in to the nursing home dynamic, finally. And it is the hospitalization rate, not the raw number of confirmed cases, that is the key metric relative to management of the outbreak.

    • I’ll preface this by saying I’m just commenting with no specific medical knowledge here. I thought the point of using hydroxychloroquine as part of a treatment was because it was shown to allow zinc to have a greater impact on viral replication? . It wasn’t the hydroxychloroquine itself that was supposed to slow the virus so much as it enhances the effects of the zinc in playing the cock blocker.
(Again, this is just my understanding. Not saying this is truth, and I haven’t verified)

To me, it makes sense that this drug alone as a treatment wouldn’t be very effective, but curious if they’re studying this+zinc supplements together?

On it’s own, zinc has been clinically proven to be an effective treatment in lessening the severity and duration of several symptoms of the common cold, so it makes sense to me it could have a similar impact on other viral infections, especially if another drug like the hydro can aid in it’s effectiveness.

      https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(05)66115-6/fulltext

      • This study covered cloroquines by itself and paired with antibiotics that showed early promise. I will read the full study tonight and see if zinc was part of it. Basically the summary says that outcomes are equal or worse, with the drugs studied, compared to not using those interventions.
Hydroxiclouine and cloroquine both interfere with viral replication by messing up the injection process. They have been proven effective on some viruses but not all. Idk how zinc is involved but will look into it.

      • I believe zinc attaches to the ace2 receptors which doesn’t allow the virus to attach to cells and replocate. Basically starving the virus out.
Hydro is used because it aids the zinc in being able to attach to those cells.

Nuke- I watched this program a few weeks ago and thought you might be interested in it. This has some parallels to covid19 in a way. Pretty interesting stuff.

        https://www.pbs.org/video/jim-allison-breakthrough-vriyqn/

          • Hahaha, nothing like making sure there’s endless division in the news. This one is just an opinion survey as far as I can tell. The one I posted was actual field data of different treatments vs control groups and peer reviewed. More reliable imo.

Sure is coincidental that opposing stories pop up the same day…reminds me of the last decade!

        • 2
          1

Think of the virus as a collection of proteins, looking for cells to destroy. When it comes in contact with a cell, it slips into it and destroys it from the inside. Zinc has a positive charge so it isn’t able to follow the virus into the cell. But it will envelop and essentially smother the virus while it’s intracellular. Being a metal, it takes a week or two to for zinc to reach proper levels in the body, if one survives on a cheeseburger diet, like a lot of Americans.

Where HQC comes into play is that it is a zinc ionophore, meaning it can combine with zinc and carry it into the cells where it can interact with the virus and keep it from replicating on a larger scale. Ace2 receptors are another way to enter a cell, which is why you hear about ace2 inhibitors. HCQ does nothing on that front. If you hear about them, that’s because there are other drugs that open or inhibit these receptors for various reasons. But HCQ can only really be taken in the early stages of an infection. And it’s certainly not a phrophylaxis. Anyone who thought that was just a supreme dumbshit.

The reason the data shows poor outcomes is because it was first thought to lessen the severity of the illness once people were on respirators. The conditions which lead a person to be on a respirator are themselves contraindications for HCQ, and someone that far along could be killed with what they think is a cure.

What it will do for someone who has proper zinc levels–as part of a healthy diet–is to keep people who catch it off respirators, where the mortality rate starts climbing. But the list of contraindications for HCQ reads like it’s horrible for Americans. Hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, etc. all say don’t take HCQ, because it could kill you or even enable the virus. They also say put down the bucket of chicken and go take a walk. But that’s another topic.

What HCQ allegorically suggested was that people without contraindications could catch Covid-19 and only experience it as the mother of all flus, but not see a need for respirators. It turns out healthy people already experience the virus in this way. Unhealthy people are pretty much screwed, concerning HCQ. Zinc and vitamins C, D and B-12 all help the immune system and should be a part of a healthy diet, if not supplemented. But HCQ should only really be taken once someone is positive, but before they start showing serious symptoms. And even then, it doesn’t do enough to show much promise. But it does a little for some people. So it can’t be disregarded completely.

Part of the confusion was that China and South Korea found a way to mitigate the most serious symptoms early. Some American idiot got a hold of that news and conflated it with HCQ, which was one of a number of drugs that showed limited promise. But it all seems to be a political game to said idiot, since it seems Cuba had developed a drug that did precisely what the idiot thought HCQ did from those early reports.

But apparently the United States has to retain its pride and feed its avarice instead of acknowledge Cuba could save the world.
          https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-cuba-idUSKBN22Y2Y4

          • I should say that early limited promise was not really allegory, as it was called. It was from in vitro studies. So the conflation was that much more egregious–almost as if someone as making a buck off some snake oil.

  54. An interesting article I read at work today(lost the link, but it was based on our organization’s own observations, confirming the findings of an article in the New England Journal of Medicine) was about the decrease in patients hospitals have been receiving for Heart attacks.

It coincided with the early March shut down and has persisted throug to the present. Heart attack hospitalizations have been about HALF of normal in Emergency departments, nationwide. It’s not that people are having fewer heart attacks, but the suspicion is people are fearful of visiting ER facilities because of the fear of Covid19 exposure amd are electing to ride it out at home when they are experiencing more minor types of hesrt attacks, which is very risky.(people need to keep in mind patients of each are treated in separate areas of the facilities, to minimize any risk of contamintation)
If you find yourself experiencing heart attack symptoms, call for medical help. Covid19 is much less likely to take you out.

    • 5
      1

We will never know how many heart attacks and other health issues could have been prevented/treated without the degree of shut down mandated in response to Covid19. Cancer screenings being only one example.

      • 1
        1

Doesn’t the same logic apply to lives saved from infectious disease, car wrecks, work place accidents and so on?

        • Of course.
Ironically, or not, one area in which the impact of shut down can be most accurately estimated is the economy.

          • Yeah those are definitely easy numbers compared to accurate outcomes and death statistics. The isolation bought us time and delayed deaths and sickness. We likely will not go into isolation again and we will see if people can take precautions. I won’t put my projections on here cause it always causes a bunch of shit but the math is not kind or easy to look at.

          • 1
            1

If the economy is any indication, static wages and “right to work” laws have killed more people than anything else.

So I have a hard time listening to the purely political argument that a shutdown is worse than a novel virus with a 6% mortality rate.

More widespread testing will drop that mortality rate, btw. Wouldn’t we all like it more if it was somewhere around 1% instead of 6%?

  55. Potatoes and zucchini coming up in my garden. So stoked! I thought they had rotted with recent rains.
Apparently potato is difficult to grow here, too, so not bad (so far) for year 1. Still have to get through more rain and the summer hail.

Tomato plants look great, OB. The 8 year old seed worked.

    • Glad you’re stoked.
Did you plant peas? Oregon Sugar Pod, straight from OSU, are great and love cool weather.

Potatoes hard to grow there? Ever read “Centenial” by Michner? He recounts the symbiosis of the sugar beet and cattle industries, I’d have thought anyplace that grew sugar beets would be fine for spuds, but then I thought 8 year old tomato seeds were a lost cause!

      • No peas. The sun is scorching here, and our early effort with lettuce failed, so now we’re scarred for life. Haha.
Yeah potatoes are hard to grow here according to a few sites. Some say the opposite. It’s conflicting info with this gardening stuff. Buncha fake news!

How did you know Sugar Beets were a thing here? There are trails all along the Poudre that have old sugar beet farms. Pretty cool.

    • Google easy harvest potato planter. I’ve been meaning to try that method.

I made up for you in the pea department this year. May have gone slightly apeshit actually.

See if you can find lemon cucumbers. They’re the best.

      • I’ve never had much luvk with Lemon Cukes. No trouble growing them, but they were full of large seeds and not much meat/flesh. Not sure if it’s the variety or growing conditions.

        • Sounds like you let them get over ripe. They get big seeds and kinda separate inside. You actually want to pick them right when they start to turn yellow, if you let them get dark yellow they get soft and seedy.

        • Have you heard of Armenian cucumbers? They get huge with enough sunlight and are fairly easy to grow. The first time I grew them I thought I had let them get overripe, but they still tasted fine.

          • Yup Armenian yard long cucumbers. They’re pretty good, and you get more then you ever need. Although I never actually got one that was a yard long, more like 20-24 inches. Still you better really like cucumbers.

  56. Canadian scientists believe they may have found a treatment that blocks a protein that causes covid 19 and that treatment is CBD from the hemp plant.

  57. Article in the NY post and indicated more research is needed but the anti inflammatory properties of CBD appears to reduce the risk of contracting Covid by 70-80% by blocking a key protein that allows the virus to enter cells. It sounds like the Canadian scientists are onto a potential treatment. Let’s hope it’s not pie in the sky stuff.

    • Interesting. That’d be the first time CBD has actually done anything for anybody. Hehe.

I’ve felt since the beginning, just like with HIV, we’re much more likely to get a successful anti-viral treatment than a vaccine. Lots of smart folks working on it so hopefully, we make some fast progress.

        • Maybe, it just hasn’t been studied properly. Plenty of anecdotal evidence that is does something and helps with some forms of pain.
Example, my dad uses a cbd lotion on his sciatic nerve and swears it helps him. He’s had on and off pain for around 40 years and used basically every pain reliever made. Nothing helped until he started using the lotion. This coming from a guy who was pissed they passed the Marijuana legalization laws in Oregon. Quote “they’ll be god damn potheads everywhere”. I explained that there already are potheads everywhere, this wasn’t going to make more potheads because it was already easier to get pot then it was to get liquor in oregon. He changed his tune when his pain doctor told him to give it a try. That was 2 years ago. Now it could be a placebo effect, but I find that hard to believe with his anti-marijuana views.

  58. Since gardening is on peoples’ minds, thought I’d mention a flick my family watched tonight. It’s a Disney Nature documentary you can find on Disney+ called Wings of Life. Butterflies, Bees, Hummingbirds, Bats and pollination. The description doesn’t sound all that interesting, but the footage was fantastic. If anything, it’s a good way to just sit back and relax while watching beautiful filmography in high def, but it’s also pretty informative, just being able to see up close how these creatures are involved in maintaining the diversity in our ecosystem.

The ones I’ve seen are just driving down the road, masks on. It’s weird. My county has had 25 cases, 2 deaths I think. No new cases for 3 weeks. I go out in public and 60-75% of the people have masks on. I’m living life on the edge no mask. I’m almost positive my daughter had this in late January/early February. All the symptoms line up and I had a milder version (my cough only lasted 2 weeks compared to a month for the kid.). Nobody is testing for people that have already had it here so I can’t get tested and neither can my daughter. I’d be happy to give em some of my/my daughter’s blood if it can help with dealing with the virus

        • I might add, the hospital has already taken quite a bit of my blood in the last few months. Trying to figure out what’s going on with my left kidney…

          • I’m not to worried we can get by on one. I had a kidney stone in February and since then about once a week it just throbs with pain. No new stones, my white blood cell count is great and all the other stuff they check your blood for is fine. So, it’s a mystery. My pee tests normal too…

          • If I remember my right from my left then left kidney can get referred pain from muscles and other organs. I believe e they share or have nerve clusters close to each other. Might want to track your activity and kidney pain for a few weeks. Might find a connection.

As we were heading down south this weekend to visit family, my wife and I thought we smelled poop as we were entering Eugene. We are still working to potty train our child and this is the first long car ride since the no diaper shift. I immediately started looking for a place to pull over mentally preparing to clean a poopy car seat. As we quickly got out of the car we realized our daughter did not poop. After getting back situated and heading on down the road, I asked my wife what do you think that smell was? Her response….That’s Eugene. She is a keeper. Go Beavs and happy Memorial Day to all.

This is a pretty cool browser/search engine for people who like trees. They use about 3/4 of their revenue to plant trees and fund environmental repair projects. They have transparent records and financials you can review too.

    • My employer plants over a million trees annually. Really I think they should throw some carrots in for good measure

    • that first link about Brown seemingly changing her mind about college sports is perhaps the most newsworthy development within the Covid/sports nexus in the last six weeks or more. It’s the result, I believe, of enrollment officials in Corvallis and Eugene telling the governor’s budget officials that the single biggest effect she can have on the forthcoming budget/revenue shortfall debate is allowing on-camps instruction because otherwise the 15-20% (or greater) loss in tuition revenue can only be made up via back fill from state support, which isn’t in the cards either. No students, no sports, which means the principal collateral business income for higher ed (athletics) also goes in the tank, which compounds the loss of tuition–it’s classic downward spiral.

Curiously, the Oregonian story appeared at virtually the same time a piece went up on the Wall Street Journal website Friday night analyzing the divergences between the power 5 conferences and their approach to the start up of the college football season. As is customary, the Pac 12 shows in the worst light, with our old favorite, Larry Scott, looking either foolish or out of touch. The takeaway from the Journal is that SEC will play football; likely the ACC, even without Duke, Syracuse, Pittsburgh and BC (the last three in high impact Covid States. The Big 12 is set to go, and thus we have the Big 10 and Pac 12. In the journal’s chart it says “Oregon and Oregon State want to open but the state says no,” but again, that was before Brown’s announcement Friday night. If, in fact, Oregon sides with the Washington and ARizona schools, that’s going to put the pressure on Newsom to cut SC, UCLA, Cal, and Stanford some slack. Should be an interesting dynamic. I could foresee the return of the Pac-8. Hell, SC wants to leave anyway.

  61. Sweet. The NBA has officially scheduled resuming their season in July(after the NBA finals would normally be over)
They’s taking over Disney World, so all teams will be living on campus and playing on courts on the property.
Will be interesting to see how out of shape and rusty some of these guys are. Just glad to have some sports resuming soon.

    • One of my first shows was Def Leppard at the lane county fairgrounds. Pyromania tour. That was a really good album and it still holds up pretty well now.

That said, everything after is pop glam dog shit, pour some sugar on me is easily top 5 worst songs of all time.

        • Power ballads became more of a thing in the mid to late 80s…

Those cheesy drum beats and the slow tempo made it sound more pop. It wasn’t just Def Leppard moving this direction, but all the hairbands began to sound like pop bands due to that song structure.

          • Def Leppard hit the game winner with Bringing on the Heartbreak at the very beginning of that era. Should have just left it alone. That’s probably why I hate pour some sugar on me so much. Would have been an absolutely terrible song by anyone. But they had written some really good rock songs, then sunk to that shit.

      • Was at the same show. (Uriah Heep was the opening act) One of the loudest rock shows I ever attended. Had almost complete hearing loss the next day….temporarily thank goodness. I’ve seen DL several times since…they still can rock and it appeared to us it wasn’t just the money they really have fun playing. Even at their current age they can still bring it. Kinda cool when I took my 14 you daughter to see them and get to share the same music concert experiences I had at around the same age.

      • “…we might learn a lot more about Cristobal in 2020 since he has to replace nearly his entire offensive line and a four-year starter at quarterback.”

Cristo has already failed the first part of the test by not having a QB at the ready. Regardless, I’ll be surprised if N D State wins that game.

Not impressed by cristo but what did you expect him to do to get a qb ready to replace a four year starter? They were all in with Herbert. Maybe I’m missing something. Many programs hear after year turn to a new starting qb with her limited experience. I guess he could have snagged a grad transfer.

Could have given reps to #2 during clear victories. Of course, that wouldn’t have helped headlines for the “anointed” QB.
And, yup, Cristo is turning to transfers; to me, not an indicator of a “top 25” coach.

I’m not a Cristobal fan, but he quickly righted a program from the Fortune Cookie Coach’s laziness and decline. He’s getting talent on the lines and that will always give them a chance. They were a 2 loss team last year with a Rose Bowl win, right?

The new O coordinator might make up for Cristo’s in-game coaching mistakes, otherwise I figure Cristo’s good for 2-3 losses per year just on coaching decisions.

I am just suspicious about how they get that line talent to Eugene. I know they have what some consider to be the best facilities in the nation, but if you’re a 4* or 5* with 10’s of offers, you go to Eugene?!? I’m sure its also the Nike and ESPN links and exposure; they get attention if Slick Willie takes them to the LV bowl.

Knight will probably set up some kind of endowment or trust before he goes into his suspended animation chamber so that if they ever revive him he can see if he bought a national championship….

At times in the recent past, Quack teams have played atrocious defense. Cristobal righted that ship also. Helrich did Cristobal a big favor by throwing Herbert to the wolves early so that Mario inherited a seasoned quarterback. Now, we will see if he can develop QB talent on his own though it looks like he may have opted for the transfer route with the Boston College QB. It’s pretty interesting how the Ducks continue to have the national hype when they have not been in the playoff picture for five years and when they did they lost. ESPN never lost their infatuation with them from the Chip Kelly era. Even during their 4-8 season, we kept seeing the mascot in commercials.

That whole “Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply” album really holds up pretty well. We used to play the hell out of that tape as kids, so some of that is probably nostalgia speaking, but that band was creative and talented, and never took themselves seriously.
Maybe that’s why they didn’t do well here. We Americans like our metal overly serious and in your face.

  63. I don’t know how to do all the the fancy cut and paste stuff, but national columnist Bill Plaschke dropped a scathing column last week on Chip Kelly and the state of UCLA football. He’s suggesting that the brand new, young athletic director, make a move quickly to make UCLA football relevant again. Seems Chip, being Chip, has worn out his welcome. Up to 75 players have left the program. Check it out.

I don’t think playing a game at Reser with only 15-20,000 fans permitted to attend would be any big deal. With the exception of the product it would feel like 1995. Lot’s of leg room, no-one standing in front of you, easy parking, no bathroom lines. Sounds good.

  64. What are the odds Damir Collins commits to Oregon State? Seems like the prototype of another very capable back at OSU. I assume he is a priority signing, and would gets fans/boosters excited in the continued trajectory of the program. Right now seems like an ideal time to commit to the Beavers as Smith should hit his stride and start to make his mark in the Pac-12.

2-3 bowls is realistic for Damir if he signs with Oregon State. Momentum in the program should continue to climb during the next 4 years. Is he your predicted June 9th signing Angry? Would be awesome news.

  65. Thank you to any of you or your family members who have served in the millitary. Hope you have as full a day as possible under the circumstances. For those who are missing someone who gave the full measure I hope you have good memories and peace today and everyday.

  66. Pivec has chosen to sit out the 2020 WNBA season is what the Twitter is saying. Hope everything is ok with her.
