Have at it, guys.

PS. I’m seeing concern over WR, QB, and RB in these threads. Call me crazy, but I think those are three of our best positions. OL and DBs seem like the weakest positions. On paper, this is our best team since 2006…barring injuries…and actually playing the season.

PSS. Good job sticking to zero/minimal politics. Try for the same here.

  1. I think we’re good at QB and RB. I’m still a little cautious about WR though.

As always, line play wins games. If we’re solid there, we’re going to be pretty good. Offensive line is my biggest concern. If the defensive line can get pressure, that can cover for some CB deficiencies.

  2. RB – agree, think we’re solid. I’ll miss Pierce but I think we have plenty of talent at the position. Next man up.
QB – I think the talent is there, but I am concerned about the lack of practice opportunities. Spring ball, player-run practices, etc. I think if there was ever a year you want a returning starter at the position, this is it. Not a huge concern for me, but a concern.
WR- I am concerned here. I like Bradford but he didn’t do much last year. Hopefully it was injury related and he’s good now. Taylor and Lindsey haven’t shown anything on the field to date. Flemings had some splash plays but he’s tiny and would need to take a big step. And again, limited practice time with not a lot of proven production. Color me nervous.
OL – yeah, concerning. Lost a lot of talent, starting with Brandel.
DB – maybe I’m missing something, but we didn’t lose anyone of note here, right? Last year was a young crew that improved as the year went on. We had some raw players like Wright who should be much better this year, and a heathy Morris should be a huge upgrade. Plus some JC guys who should provide competition. There’s some question marks but I see some real upside.

    • I agree with DB. I think we are loaded and just don’t know it yet. There was a bunch of freshmen that had limited time to keep their redshirts that can now enter rotation full time. The JC pickups should offer instant depth. Jalen Moore is the only loss I am aware of. I’m pretty sure this is the tallest db crew we have ever had.

    • Harrison is a 4-star WR, and Lowe looks like a RB who can play some WR, or at least catch a lot of passes. Our TEs as a unit are a big upgrade, too.

Disagree on Lindsey and Taylor. Both had moments last year. Lindsey was a 4-star at one point, and his highlight reel is insane. He just needs to stop dropping passes, which in his case looks to be more an issue of anxiety and looking to run before completing the catch. If that’s the case it’s fixable. Taylor will be a nice slot, possession WR if he gets full reps. A mix of Bradford, Lindsey, Harrison on the outside. Flemings is my least favorite, but he’s got some skills, too. Even Irish has the unique skill of breakaway speed.

      • Agree Harrison looks legit, but do we think he’s eligible this year? He’ll need a NCAA exemption right? Are we just assuming that they’ll pass em around to everyone because of the COVID disruption?

        • I thought the assumption was he would get a waiver since he transferred to a school much closer to home. Not sure when that decision would be made/annnounced though.

  3. I expect some rough line play early on. Plenty of guys in the system with the size you want to see and 4 people with real P12 experience. Ill be worried about how long the starters have actually played together.

I expect bad o-line execution for most teams early on.

  4. I think long term dB will be fine. Lots of guys to try out. Could take until game four or so to really solidify the rotation there. I like the options in the secondary. Of course health is a major factor with experiences safeties being able to help erase some dB mistakes.

My biggest concern is team mentality. Win the games you should win. Don’t lose some bad games and start going backwards. Expectations have been low the last few years. Come to battle every game and destroy ybe teams that are less superior.

  5. D line is the position that is of most concern to me. They eat up the blocks so the LBs can roam free.

Didn’t get Lemon as expected and loss of Moore hurts the depth considerably. They could have been game changers. Might have been able to get a pass rush from the inside on passing downs.

They played a lot better last year so the LBs led the team in tackles instead of the safeties the year before.

  6. OL followed by DL are my main areas of concern. Then DBs.

We have some guys with experience at all 3 positions, but none have really shown to be game changers. Losing Brandel/Lavaka/Cordasco will be the biggest issue to overcome.

    • I’m with ya on all counts. OL is my #1 concern because of the chemistry that is needed with that unit, chemistry that should have been formed in the spring. As nuke said above, “I expect bad o-line execution for most teams early on.” Beavs could fare better than most though, due to continuity of system and Coach M.

In the last thread there was discussion of an article on who will be the “KEY PLAYER” this season. I differed with the paid scribe who said that Champ was the key to the Beavs season. Champ could miss most of the season without it impacting W/L; I say that because there are others who can fill his role.
I named Gebbia, who I think is the likely starter and who should have a better than average season (based on; 1) his CW performance, and 2) his very high FB IQ). To me, he is KEY because, if he is hurt or is a disappointment, it will take a few games to adjust to Chance.

A lot of assumptions there but I wanted to mention it because I had the impression angry took my comment as concern for the QB position. I’m not concerned there, merely aware that it is harder to plug and play a QB than other positions.

  7. I think QB/RB/WR + TE are very solid. I think a commitment to the run game will be important both to develop the mentality of the OL and to have the run threat help out the passing game.

At QB there’s a potential for three QBs to play if Colletto gets some goal line reps, and maybe that kind of diversity can help as the line develops over the season.

WRs have speed across the board, and there will always be a speed advantage somewhere on the field for OSU, plus the two 6’6″ TEs.

LBs are going to be very good and I’m looking forward to watching them play. The DL will need to improve and be tenacious and consistent.

I think the DBs will make progress (well, if it were an ordinary year of spring/fall ball) and may pleasantly surprise Beaver fans. This is a coaching staff that makes improvements.

    • I think we see high DL rotation this year. Guys might not have the size and talent so keeping them fresh and OL confused is a good idea.

      • Agree. I hope they train for fast rotations. At least we don’t have to worry about a young QB taking advantage of an unset Banker D for an easy TD pass.

  8. ATTENTION Rev, and (if you’re around) MonkeyLuven:
Josh Worden (NOT Jon Warren) is up with another podcast. This time it is Zak Taylor with memories of the ’17/18 seasons. He gets into more of the mental side of the game, meditation and visualization.
Does a nice job recounting THE FOULBALL in the second game vs Arkansas, includes some banter with Yeskie at the time.

BTW, did ya know he was first string catcher at Sherwood HS?…….ahead of Adley?
About 44 minutes long, surely ya’ll can turn off NetFlicks for that long!

    https://wordenjosh.podbean.com/e/zak-taylor-baseball-2016-2019/

    • Zak is a great young man with a great family. My son played with him at 13U. Can’t say enough nice things about him. Definitely a guy you liked having on your club. Good interview. Thanks for sharing OOB. He was a great representative of OSU.

  9. Just gonna throw this out there. I think this will be our best defense since Erickson left. I might be crazy! We have guys with more experience than am average starter in the P12, Talent in critical positions, personal who absolutely fit the scheme. I think DB is loaded and has to be one of the tallest units in college. I think last year we left some of the best guys out of most games so they didn’t lose their redshirt. Weakest point will be line play but I think it will be enough. Idk how many games we win but it’s gonna be nice to watch a real defense.

      • Alex Austin and Akili Arnold are the DB ones I was thinking of. Austin caught my eye as a play maker making good reads. Arnold showed good closing instincts and tackles well.

          • Didn’t Arnold get beat a ton? Seem to remember him always standing around out of position on TDs.

Don’t remember much of Austin other than seeing the name here and there.

          • Don’t remember that with Arnold but could be wrong. He looked like a sure tackler and is the older brother of Mascarenas. I like wright. He struggled a bit at first but really turned it on down the season. One pick I remember he was able to go up and out jump the receivers for it. At least he has 4 ints already while Dunn has 0 over 4 years starting.

          • Austin had a nack for disrupting catches and knocking the ball down. He also had some really good tackles at.criticsl moments. My feel was that he had great focus and situational awareness.

I don’t remember Arnold being beat. 17 tackles in 4 games is alot for safety in our lb heavy system.

@Bleed – I should rephrase, they were not the best guys in the secondary but I thought they were better as freshmen than most of the upper class men were that young (Morris being a serious annomly)

    • Will be interesting how these tall DBs and “short-ish,” fast WRs push each other in practice and help each other get better.

  10. Our current 2021 class has definitely been one of the more unusually comstructed classes we’ve seen at OSU.
It’s still really early. Most people seem to think the class will be fairly small, but that could change if players leave the program throughout the year.
    Current class:
    Henry Buckles-OL(2021 HS senior)
    Sam Vidlak-QB(2021 HS senior)
    Easton Mascarenas-LB(2021 HS senior)
    Alex Lemon(Juco DE)
Semisi Saluni-LB(Class of 2018, returning from mission)
Sione Veimoso-OL(Class of 2018, returning from mission)

    • It is a weird one, we just don’t have a ton of guys graduating. Assuming we land Damir my wish list is:

      1) Atleast 2 OT
      2) 1-2 DT or big DE
      3) Clay Millen
      4) 1 MLB
      5) 2 DB (safety focus)
      6) Any talented guy we can get. Our roster is improving but it still lacks strong talent all over.

  11. Anyone have any insight on Pivec taking the year off from the WNBA? Covid concerns? Med school? Almost done coming up with a vaccine?

  12. Regarding DBs, I like Julian, but he’s might be a year off. I think he can start year 1 (better than Wright, IMO), but I don’t know if Smith has the guts to do it. If we had Dunn and Julian at CB, I’d feel better. Wright is a big weakness for me. He’d get some INTs but usually on exceptionally poorly thrown balls right to him instead of him making a play.

I love Morris, and he was a game changer pre 3 year injury (lol), but can we rely on him? Who are the two best safety prospects? I didn’t follow them closely, but it seemed like there was nobody promising in the pipeline behind Morris. I’ll have to look up my ratings on those guys and see if there was any I was excited about.

    • One of the guys with the initials AA was good at the end of last year. Forest has potential. That’s a spot where we need someone to step up, though. Lots of young guys that were fairly well-regraded recruits waiting in the wings.

    • It seemed when Morris came back from injury he was getting juked a lot in 1 on 1 situations and I think he lacks the cover skills to man up a wr. Moran should be interesting if he can stay healthy. Hardge and Riley are juco safeties that can hopefully make an impact. Akili Arnold is the guy you’re thinking of. He impressed from what I saw. Think he played a lot in the civil war. I was always hoping Watson would be good but never has seemed to pan out.

      • If Moran didn’t play last year when everyone and their brother was getting a shot, his chances are even worse this year. He’s basically just a failed QB experiment at this point.

      • Also, IIRC Morris wasn’t 100% when he came back last year and basically said “I’m never going to be 100%, so I just have to play through this.”

    • We were going to have Jeff Manning, Trajon Cotton and Kee Whetzel for depth at safety, but all transferred out. Writing must have been on the wall that they weren’t going to get playing time. 2 ended up at Montana and I forget where Kee ended up, but it was also a lower level of competition.

      • Never understood what happened with Kee. Starting lb and defensive rep at pac 12 media to gone in a bit over a year.

    • My impression from last season is that Wright started the year super raw and made a lot of dumb and costly mistakes- but dramatically improved over the course of the season. I thought he was our best CB by season end. Am I alone in that?

      • I agree or is at least equal to Dunn. Dunn is good in man but isn’t a playmaker. Adam’s said that right now Grant is the only one with the right mentality for corner.

      • I would give him the most improved cb award! Going in I though JoJo would lock down the two spot but Wright definitely earned it. I wish I had time to rewatch last season and track DB play.

    • I disagree on Wright. His film showed good instincts and playmaking abilities… I think he is just having trouble adjusting to the speed of college ball… He should be much better this season… the thing I like is we should not give up a lot in the run game, which will make teams one dimensional… this is huge and will make a big difference

      • Wright isn’t awful just think Julian should be able to beat him out and be an upgrade.
I’m not sure I paid enough attention to any of these guys to have a firm opinion. Just seemed to me that Wright always had the ball lobbed into his chest on his INTs, and he got toasted a lot, especially early in the year. My hope is Julian is as good as he looks, and Wright can move to nickle. Either way, I wrote DBs (not CBS) as my concern specially because Safties are more of a concern over CBs.

        • Don’t forget, we picked up a 2nd Wright in the latest recruiting class. His twin brother.
So if Wright does something wrong, we can right that wrong with the other Wright. Hopefully.

  13. The twitter bots have been really active the last 24 hours. Just search for recent “oregon state” news, sorting by most current.
Either there really are hundreds/thousands of people who all decided to share the same blog article within minutes of each other, or the bots are trying to make it seem that way.
Way to many accounts to block, so filtering them out requires query modifications. The negatives of using twitter.

CJ in a timeout for writing “politics” over and over…
The brain-eating amoeba is getting everyone.

LaPine is next if he shows up here.

Hate to do it, but specifically requested none of that in the sports threads.

    • 7
      5

That’s a little hypocritical as you also said political things but it was in the last thread. I get it he/she is a repeat offender and hasn’t added much. See your comment on May 20th and it was you starting the commentary. Other regular posters on here also made comments. They contribute way more though sports wise and seem to align with your views so maybe that’s why they get a pass. You may not see them as political but it’s clear your tone when you mention things regarding the virus/the president. It’s been a lot better and I’m glad you said something about it.

In other news, Overmans dad reached out to me about meeting up at peacock in June. A few months back we talked on the Twitter about recruiting and specifically the pitch from the osu coaches. I’m hoping to be able to connect with him.

      • 5
        11

        What did I say political?

Also, he’s not saying anything political but just trolling with the word “politics” over and over, clearly in an attempt to just be annoying, not have any discussion. Finally, I told him today to knock it off, and he basically told me to fuck off and wrote it again. It’s a very clear brain-eating amoeba troll move, just like LAPine. They should find other forums to do that. Literally millions of the out there if they want to talk politics. These aren’t general threads where anything goes, and that was made clear up front.

Gave him more than enough rope, and he hung himself. I’ll undo it in a few days.

  15. I hope to see a pound it out style with Jefferson and a inexperienced line and then throw it deep off of play action to our speedy receivers. It would be great to see some really big pass plays over 50 yards on a regular basis.

As far as o line goes I trust Michalcick to coach the guys up well enough to be solid not great. The tackle spot is the real question mark. Agree that line play will be sloppy at the beginning.

    • Just when the defense thinks JJ is.tired and they get a break BJ comes in and smashes them..then Calvin comes in at 5’8 203 and teaches them a lesson on density. LBs are gonna have to love contact and keep their heads up or they are going to eat turf one way or another.

  16. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems like one downside to having undersized WR’s is not having anyone with size to block on bubble screens. That’s usually one of the ways you use RB/WR guys like Lowe, but we’re not going to be able to rely on that.

    • It’s helps for them to have size but it’s more effort and technique. Hodgins wasn’t the best blocker of the receivers even tho he was the biggest. There are also tunnel screens or motioning a TE out.

    • In many ways edge blcoking is just about technique. You don’t have to pancake a guy you just have to mess up their angle and slow them down. Randy Moss is the worst blcoker in the history of the game and he’s huge. Technique, awareness and effort gets the job done.

MLB owners proposing that highest paid players take larger paycuts vs lower paid players. Hopefully the lower paid players realize it will hurt them badly in the long run and don’t split the union.

Classis union breaking tactic. Pit players against each other.

    • My question is why is this taking so long? They should have started Spring Training in AZ in early May when the curve was bent and protocols become clear and established. They’re wasting weeks between negotiation proposals, too. We should have games right now.

      • Testing. It wasn’t widely available. MLB and the players didn’t want to be seen as taking away testing from the general public. Same issue for NBA, NHL and other pro sports. Now they should be able to do it.

Also some teams won’t be able to play in their home cities so they had to figure that out.

The owners also made a foolish offer at the start. Agreed to pro rated salaries then reneged on it when they realized the season wouldn’t have any fans. It’s kind of on the owners for the pay issue.

    • I see zero chance the owners win this fight. See you in 2021 MLB.

MLB owners may be penny wise but they are pound foolish.

  18. Good news,

PAC12 allowing athletes back to campus in June. Solid first step toward a season.

I did see a news snippet saying OSU modeled out a scenario with 50% capacity. And other schools may not offer single game tickets. That could work for OSU as the season ticket holder base is less than or around 50% capacity.

Patricia Reichner(Jeremy Reichner and Omar Speight’s mom) was posting about this topic today. I’d imagine quite a few parents are finding themselves in this dilemma, questioning the risk for their children vs the push to have a football season with all of the unknowns right now. As a parent, I totally get where she’s coming from. Wonder how many athletes will pull out of competition this year? The pressure on them must be immense.

      https://twitter.com/BraysMeMom/status/1265389985097801730?s=19

“I miss football, miss the anticipation of the upcoming season. But at what cost do we have a season??? At the cost of our children? Our sons who have to go out on the football field and put their lives at risk of getting covid-19? Are my sons not as important as your children?”

“Don’t get me wrong I want my sons to have their football season, but let’s be honest here we’re not opening up states cause it’s safe, it’s all because of money, the economy I get it. But that doesn’t mean everything should proceed as if there is no covid 19 out here.”

As soon as he referred to the “angry beaver” as “badass”, my brain fogged over and I lost 12 IQ points…
My equally well thought out counter argument, not one use of that stupid logo on any of the baseball team uniforms that went to Omaha.

    • 4
      3

I graduated in ‘68 and like the angry beaver the best and the original happy beaver 2nd. I have a lot of clothes and other stuff with those logos. I refuse to get anything with the latest one on it. To me it looks like something a 12 year old would make and give to a baby to play with and chew on. To show how much I hate it, my son gave me a nice watch with this logo on it as a present and I gave it back to him to return to where he bought it.

  19. I fell asleep today and had a dream that Mitch Canham had resigned and the Pat Casey was going to come back to coach the baseball team. I actually woke up and started texting a friend about it before I stopped and double checked my “sources” online. Thus is day 72 of my shutdown…

All timeouts have been removed. Hopefully the heat of the day was enough to ward off the brain-eating amoebas.

My advice: if you want to talk politics, find a different site to do that on, or wait for a “general thread”…

  21. You may have seen I posted a tweet showing an instagram video from Nebraska WR JD Spielman. In the video he shows a lone OSU football helmet sitting a bench in what looks like his room, with a comment on the screen about the helmet looking good to him. Could mean something or could mean nothing, bit Nebraska fans are worried he’s going to grad transfer to OSU.

He also has been rumored to Minnesota since his dad works for the Vikings football organization. So who knows. Not like WR is an area of immediate need for OSU, but he could start if he came here. Maybe if Harrison isn’t immediately available?
Similar build to a James Rodgers/Tyjon Lindsey.

    https://twitter.com/AZBMXdad/status/1265418331030294528?s=20

(The tweet i linked belongs to a nebraska fan who screen grabbed the video from Spielman’s instagram account)

    • WHERE IS BG??
Mention of Minnesota reminded me that BG hasn’t posted for quite awhile, time outs have been lifted so that’s no excuse. I’m not buying angry’s three way theory!

    • Somebody must have posted it on Blitz because now Angie is followimg Spielman. Again, doesn’t mean anything, but still interesting in a time when we have no other news going on.

        • So either he is in possession of an Oregon State helmet for some reason, or somebody took a video of a helmet and sent it to him and he decided to make a video post out of that. Seems more likely he has the helmet, but then what reason is there for a player to be in possession of a game helmet? Don’t they leave those in storage until game day?

    • So after doing some research I don’t think he’s close to graduating. Sean callaghan said he wouldn’t likely graduate until December so he would need a waiver and that’s not likely this late. Too bad too he’s 200 yds and 20 catches to be the all time husker leader in both. But I guess he was tight with Gebbia.

      • This Husker fan is saying he is visiting his friends(Lindsey and Gebbia) at OSU right now.
Begs the question….does a guy from Minnesota who plays for Nebraska really make a trip all the way to Corvallis, OR to visit his buddies? I suppose it’s possible. Or he could be on a visit. Seems either way, we’ll hear more soon enough.

        • It could make sense because supposedly its mental health problems. Nice to be with old friends maybe you miss. Maybe he regrets not leaving with them. I don’t know how he’d get a waiver tho but I don’t understand how the ncaa works at all.

  22. 3
    6

The NHLPA is ran by a man named Donald Fehr, baseball fans should know him as the guy MLB owners blamed for 1994 and every work stoppage from 1983-1994.

26 years later the NHLPA led by Fehr and the NHL reach a deal to resume play. MLB owners and MLBPA have not and owners are still blaming the MLBPA.

Reminds me of this line from the show Justified.

“If you run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole, if you keep running into assholes all day, you are the asshole.”

Maybe MLB owners need to take a look in the mirror?

  23. So I watched the 2006 game between Oregon state and boise st. because I’m so sport deprived. It made me think that this rebuild is going to be a lot like Peterson’s style. I know we kind of were wondering if that would happen when Smith got here but I can already see similiraties. With ball control, playaction, trick plays, and being the aggressor. I think he is really creating a culture effectively. I know every coach says that but he seems to be actu6doing it.

      • Stroughter’s punt and a whole lot of Ian Johnson and his beanies. Decimated on National TV again. Man that was brutal.

    • It’s funny: I remember that season being one of missed opportunities because the PAC was down and we had such a strong team. Looking at scores, we won a lot of close games, which means there was probably some luck that went our way, too.

Still, we would have been co-champs if we could have scored more than 6 against WSU at home, maybe even gone to the Rose Bowl? Not sure what the tie-breaker was, but we beat USC.

        • Think they’ll take people who won’t write the puffiest of pieces?

Have to write a lot to make something even resembling a career. And get paid little to nothing.

        • I was under the impression they don’t. I think it’s couched as a “good opportunity to build your resume” for an aspiring sports writer.

Maybe someone on here has already written for them? I know that guy on twitter who goes by @sportsnutdavid spent a little time on there. Not sure if he is on this site, but thought he chimed in occasionally.

          • Good opportunity to build your resume

Translation of you turn out to be good, we’ll pay you eventually.

Tough to break into the sports writing world for a career right now. Especially for teams with low national fan bases.

          • What a scam. “Give us free content so we can add traffic to our site and get more advertising dollars”. “Pay? Lol you’re building your resume, you don’t need pay”.

          • It’s like an unpaid internship, except without the college credit or the promising career to look forward to.
I don’t even think they get press pass access, so no free games. Somebody can correct me if I’m wrong.

  24. Enjoyed hashing out of what play could be like for different units.

What are your feelings about the depth of the squad coming into this season? Better? The same? Worse? I guess I’m asking this more from a on paper stand point, given we have “less” to see on field at present.

    • Due to the combination of better coaching and better athletes i think the depth is going to be a strong point which has not been the case for years.

    • Probably best depth in a decade atleast. Only place I see depth problems is defensive line but that really depends on if a nose tackle is truly necessary. Safety is weak but last year we rotated corners an safties around all over.

    • Best in years, excepting the O and D lines.

I don’t like hyperbole, but I seriously doubt the Beavers have ever had this kind of QB depth 1-3, Gebbia, (or) Nolan, Gulbranson, plus a QB for special packages in Colleto. Anybody recall a QB roster equal or better?

    • Depth at qb is definitely a question. The probable starter has only started one game. The rest I’m not sure if any have any d1 experience yet. With questions on the OL it would nice to have 2 or 3 guys that you feel good about. I think they’ll be good but this quarantine really hurts their development. I’ve said it before but I feel confident with the guys we got but I’m concerned about the tackle position after kipper. Does anyone have guesses as to who it would be? Maybe Bush, gray, wellsfry? I know the last staff had Montibon playing there but that was the last staff so take that with a grain of salt.

      • Last I heard, Bush was being groomed as back up at LT, with Kipper starting on that side.(both played RT last year, I believe)

        • Ya I guess we’ll have to wait and see. It could be fine but until then the other tackle position is probably my biggest question mark for the team as far as starters go.

    • Thanks for offering thoughts on this.

I thought to ask the question this ay because it’s felt at least, there was a perennial issue with… thinness at depth? Then, we’d get a slew of injuries and it impacted what the W-L was for that season. It always felt like we lose a critical starter, and there was a sense of, well who can we find that can remotely replace this person? Added more stress it seemed, from the outside.

Some of that is attributable to $, where emphasis is placed in the program, whether the individual player may have been rash, just accidental and all that– all those things have been brought up etc.

Still, there’s examples out there where similar programs in scale have been able to do well in this one aspect. Great programs always seem to have a strong roster down to the bench, so even if they’re dealt a bad hand at injuries, and do not finish with the “stellar” record, they still manage to finish pretty strongly.

So, it’s reassuring to read that people generally share this sentiment.

      • If an injury were to happen to Gebbia I think there would be a big drop off at least for the first few games until the next guy was able to feel comfortable. Another guy would be if kipper went down It would be a big drop off.

    • Cool, indeed! Thanks for posting.

Further proof that wild animals don’t stay current on the scientific literature! I was lucky enough to see one in the Goat Rocks over 20 years ago. It was educational explaining to my son that, eventhough the textbooks at the time said that area was outside their range, animals do move around.

So the expert says “twenty in the entire state”…………hmmm

      • Yeah, the experts have no idea what the wildlife is doing. A few years ago a coworker shot and killed a nice white tail buck. There wasn’t a season for them here because they are threatened species in southern Oregon. He was like shit I fucked up and actually called fish and game to self report. The officer asked him what hunting unit he shot it in. So he told him and the guy says to him white tails don’t live there, put your tag on your blacktail buck.
Also last year I was bear hunting and I swear to God I saw a Grizzly bear. in the Cascade mountain of southern Oregon. Where the experts say they don’t live.

          • Yeah, I did a bunch of research on Oregon grizzlies after I saw that one. No pics of it, as I was looking at it in amazement through the scope on my rifle from about 200 yards. I never even thought about pulling the trigger. I also read they are showing up all over Nevada, where they haven’t been since the early 1900s.

          • Funny you say that. My grandparents lived in grants pass near a pioneer cemetery which was next to an elementary school we would go play at. I remember walking through the cemetery looking at head stones and seeing “killed by grizzly bear” on more then one of them. Southern Oregon was hard-core back in the day.

    • Wolverines have TREMENDOUS ranges, even when denning and have established territories. When looking for own territory or mates, they’ll go a long way. Cool animals. I’ve received very credible reports if sightings in NE Oregon and wouldn’t be at all surprised if true. historically they ranged farther south and down Sierra Nevadas. I think many animals range farther than we commonly expect, and they don’t always want to be seen and are often crepuscular and nocturnal.

      • About 20 years ago I saw a lynx on the valley floor out by Alvadore. I watched it through the scope for probably 10 minutes before the wind shifted.

My dad was the endangered species coordinator for the Olympic National Forest at the time and I told him what I saw. His first response was “no way’. He dug in to the books and sure enough there had been credible sightings out that way before.

        • Nice. Saw a Lynx up in BC…got a great photo of it. It sat there for five minutes at least basically posing for shots. When I went to eat that night, I told some locals, and they said they’d never seen on in their entire life.

I saw my first bobcat last week, and I’ve spent half a lifetime in the woods.

          • I saw my 1st bobcat last summer, taking my daughter to a remote trail that leads to a waterfall. We came around the corner and it was just standing in the middle of the gravel road. She says holy cow dad that’s a big cat I wonder who it belongs too. bless her heart she had no idea bobcats existed.

          • I’ve seen probably half a dozen bobcats through the years, the last one was last year up Mosby Creek by Cottage Grove and that was far and away the biggest of them all.

Also- I remember my dad showing me some huge rock bluff, I want to say up Warner Mountain above Oakridge where there were Peregrine Falcons nesting.

        • Ha, I’ve already read that. I just love that some of these species are finding their way back into Oregon. except the wolves, I’d rather we not have those.

          • Re: The thumbs-down to wildlife-sightings, the ho-hum reflects living in Montana, not boredom with the subject and, having seen all the mentioned species, on multiple occasions, s – except wolverine, not because they aren’t nearby, but because they are so nocturnal.

          • Re: The thumbs-down to wildlife-sightings, the it reflects living in Montana, not boredom with the subject and, having seen all the mentioned species, on multiple occasions, s – except wolverine, not because they aren’t nearby, but because they are so nocturnal.

          • @helmsley
I figured that was the reason behind your comment.
Almost posted, “good for you, brother, enjoy it while you can. Hollywood wildlife is coming!”……but I didn’t.

        • I’m pretty sure they had an episode of oregon field guide about that oregon wolverine. They even got video of it from a helicopter. Pretty neat.
We also had that wolf travel out of the eagle caps all the way to Roseburg then down into California before returning to the eagle caps later the same year. I believe it was the first recorded wolf west of the cascades in more then 100 years.

  25. MLB teams releasing dozens of minor leaguers, even though minor league baseball has yet to be officially cancelled its only a matter of time.

  26. Seeing lots of the Hamilcar / Lawrence Taylor comparisons, makes sense I guess, but I see the Dwight Freeney argument as well!

    • Hope it’s not drug related. JK.

Big serious question: would Taylor have been so quick off the snap if he wasn’t high on coke?

    • I know OSU doesn’t typically promote individual football players, but it might be good exposure for the program if they promoted Hamilcar and JJ this upcoming season. If not for his injury, Hamilcar might have ended up being the national leader in Sacks/TFLs last year. And JJ was a FR All American who will likely declare for draft after this season.

  27. 1
    1

Just read an article about Hamiclar. Says he wants to play at 250 this year. Our 5 on the line could be Sharp (251), Reichner (275) Whittley (333), Shippen (288) and Hamiclar (250). That’s some decent weight and a whole lot of agility.

Average Weight of that like up.is 280 lbs.

    • I’m a little surprised given Newman transferred there too as a grad. I’m curious to see how a Pac-12 guy performs in the SEC. Will be a good measuring stick.

      • Pretty common for guys to commit in their soph/jr years of high school. Not really sure why baseball is like that.

There’s already 9 commits in the 2022 class.

And now 2 in the 2023 class.

  28. Vidlak did pretty well in his interview posted above. Mostly standard answers, and probably a “Zoom” connection or similar, but he seemed well composed for a guy entering his senior season. His coach comments on his leadership and ability to raise expectations of teammates.

  29. Somebody messaged me and says Angie is talking about a high profile transfer coming to OSU soon.
I dont know who and dont have time to reasearch as I’m hitting the road in a few minutes. Spielman seems like a high potential possibility. Probably checking Angie’s recent follows would also be a clue.

People keep saying Spielman cant waive his sitting period because he already redshirted and isnt graduating, but keep in mind, his dad is an NFL GM. That family has the financial and legal resources to challenge the NCAA,l. Thinking about Tate Martell to Miami situation.

  30. Rumors are of a 4* silent commit as well as a high profile transfer.
If i were to bet, that would be Damir Collins and JD Spielman.
Guess we’ll find out soon enough

    • 1
      1

Any view of whether Collins committing would give us any sway with Rawlins-Kibonge?

It’s nice seeing the in-state rankings turn more orange!

    • It has to be Collins, no? Speilman was a 3-star.
I watched Speilman (I think?) when watching NE and he wasn’t very good. If he’s the guy I’m thinking of…did he play under Riley?

      • I haven’t watched him but isn’t he close to
Holding some major records at Nebraska? That has to say something about him.

      • 2
        3

Spielman has had a nice career at Nebraska. I checked his height, listed at 5’9″ of course. Wasn’t there a pro team in the ’80s who ran the run and shot with a bunch of small receivers? Seemed like they had a nickname.

      • Nebraska Career Receiving Records:
        Catches – 189 (#6 OSU)
        Yards – 2747 yds (#5 OSU)
        TDS – 25 (#1 OSU)

        Oregon State Career Receiving Records:
        Catches – 227
        Yards – 3924
        TD – 24

        Spielmen is 170/2546/15
        Hodgins was 176/2332/20

I would say Spielmen would be a shoe in for best Nebraska receiver ever and his career numbers would land him top 5 in every category at OSU. His 3 year numbers are very comparable to Hodgins. If he comes he’s the most accomplished reciever on the roster by a few miles.

        • All these offensive transfers (I know we had a d end and linebacker from Nebraska) are nice but I’d take a corner, lineman etc. Where does Lowe fit with the playmakers we have? Will Gould, Irish, Stewart ever find Regular playing time?

My question, do we want/need spielman?

          • I would say wide receiver is our deepest talent position but least proven. It might be good to have a proven guy in there for a year while the others continue to figure out how to catch in game but it may also be better to let those reps go to one of the guys on the roster. Idk really, we were so low on talent for so long I’m still hungry for anything we can get.

          • I think spielman is a guy you take if you can get him. Its unfortunate because he’s the same size and skillset as most of our WRs which is small, quick, fast. It would be a no brainers if he was tall.

I think RB is a deeper more talented position than WR on the team. So far the RBs we’ve recruited with this staff have been the best or one of the top recruits in the class.

        • Bradford is proven, but I guess he’s similar to Moran in that he needs to prove that he’s fully himself after the foot injury.

Agree that I’d feel a lot more comfortable with a guy who’s actually done it on the field before.

Also, while the young TEs are intriguing, I’d really like a few larger WRs to diversify our offense a little. Always better to have guys with different skill sets & strengths.

I don’t want to get into the political stuff – I don’t – but thought this was worth sharing. In particular the concern of state leaders of the impact the recession will have on the state. A strong response to COVID-19 will hopefully help minimize the impact of the declining economy – perhaps even help boost some businesses that are able to function over those in other states that will struggle. Oregon has traditionally been on the tail end of economic recovery due to the lack of major industry hubs (we mostly have satellite hubs of places like Boeing and Intel) and for other reasons.
And I totally understand where the red county folks are coming from – lower population density, lower risk – and like Oregon itself, the rural counties are usually the last to experience an economic recovery in the state. That said – “Red Oregon” needs better political leadership if they hope to make some gains throughout the state.

  32. Can you guys list any college 3-4 defenses that you know off the top of your head? I want to do a roster comparison to see where we are on paper. I know what any NFL 3-4 looks like but that’s not a good comparison for most college rosters.

Hungry for good news in recruiting. A big commit this week would really help build momentum into the summer. Am really looking forward to seeing Damir Collins run wild for the Orange and Black. He’s the type of talent that like Jacquizz Rodgers will get fans to the stadium and excited for the program as it makes its climb under Coach Smith. Would help make OSU increasingly popular for football in PDX. Spielman would be icing on the cake.

angry said (in reference to my “political” posts,

“Also, he’s not saying anything political but just trolling with the word “politics” over and over, clearly in an attempt to just be annoying, not have any discussion. Finally, I told him today to knock it off, and he basically told me to fuck off and wrote it again. It’s a very clear brain-eating amoeba troll move, just like LAPine. They should find other forums to do that. Literally millions of the out there if they want to talk politics. These aren’t general threads where anything goes, and that was made clear up front.”

I responded with an explanation of why but it was deleted, my guess is without reading. So no one will ever know the reason for the posts, unless you agree with angry’s “brain-eating amoeba” theory.

      7

      Still not dropping it, huh?

Nothing was deleted. You were banned for the day for clear abuse of “no politics”, and your posts disappeared with that ban. I’m reading them in the auto-delete area, and you give no explanation. You just whine like a snowflake and say I have a God complex. Again, if you can’t understand “no politics” and follow it, then just leave because I can tell this is not going to end well for you.

General thread = anything goes, including politics.
Sports thread = very clear instructions no politics, and you abused it just to troll. After I gave a warning no less.

Question just for the fun of it. If in the season opener Gebbia got hurt which QB would you be most comfortable bringing in assuming they all get the upcoming fall camp?

    • 6
      1

I think I might go with Moore. He has the most experience in the system and is always talked well about by the staff. If it was farther down the line I would probably take Nolan but I don’t think a fall camp is enough for him to be ready. From the reports he was doing very well in spring and Gulbranson was outperforming him. I know that it was really early but I don’t think he’d be ready for Ok. St.

      • I just have a hard time believing he’ll be ready game 1 against ok. St. Especially when he’s being outperformed by a guy who just graduated high school. I’m worried that he doesn’t have the same dedication to the playbook, and tape that Gebbia and Gulbranson do. I could be wrong about that but seemed like he thought he could just come in and be ready and then wasn’t. There is some along the lines of if you put in a QB too early it can shatter their confidence and you can lose them forever. I just dont think that’s the environment you want to put him in. On the road against a top 15 team with a high powered offense. He’d be asked to keep up with them.

Musky is an eccentric loon, but he gets shit done. I’m super happy it was successful because it would directly effect me financially if it failed. Go Space-x.

      • This is a huge deal also because it proves that private start-ups can accomplish technological feats. It also proves that the federal government can invest in technologies that work (the space shuttle program was a complete bust).

        • That and they did it cheaper and faster, and so far safer.
Didn’t someone at NASA claim we would never fly manned flights as a country after we canceled the shuttle program?

          • Probably a career employee who is stubborn to accept a new method of solving the same problem. Very common across multiple government agencies; they really are a reason why we can’t progress technologically.

My stepson is a software engineer with the SpaceX starlink satellite program. He was pretty amped when we spoke after the launch.

  38. Finally found a way to get some free wifi while away this weekend. Been cut off from tv and internet, but assuming this whole Phase I of re-opening the economy is still going as smoothly as it was last week, we should be on to phase II in no time, right?
Looking forward to returning home next week under phase II, with nothing to think about besides summer fun and college football right around the corner

I think there’s a fairly clear delineation between the daytime peaceful protests with a message to be heard, and a predominant night-time shift to opportunists who take advantage of social unrest to riot and loot.

Might need a general thread soon. Between Covid, protests and some truly bizarre fiscal proposals politics are gonna explode. Maybe if we get some commits it can stem the tide? Hear that all you guys with offers! Save us from strife!

    • Hey, the good news is we’ve made it half way through 2020 . The bad news? Still halfway to go.
Maybe it would be a good time to start compiling a list of top targets or potential commits. I really haven’t paid a ton of attention to recruiting since signing day. The covid stuff really delayed recruiting too, with the dead period currently extended through July 31st. So basically no Spring and most Summer unofficial visits have been allowed to happen. Fall is going to be interesting, if families dont want to hop on planes to travel for official visits in-state or local recruiting seems like it should be more of a priority than recent years. There’s talent out there still, especially in Washington.

        • I have some already compiled and will do some more research before posting. Hopefully have something put together tomorrow. Still out of town so it will have to wait till I’m home

          • Garrett Digiorgio and Isaia Glass are both OTs I think we could land that would fit our needs. Glass has a huge frame so I’m wondering how much he fills out for senior year.

Ilasia Gonebure is a DT that caught my eye. Would like to see some senior video cause he was huge but kinda raw In junior highlights.

Edit: rewatched Gonebure and I would like 3 of him. Hard to say how good he is cause he’s in a pretty low Sac division.

      • I will be picky and say as of tomorrow we will be 5/12 of the way through 2020. We have to wait until July 1st to be 1/2 through. I do like the idea of having a better chance of getting more good Northwest recruits. Always hoping for the 4* and 5* recruits from anywhere in the country though.

        • I live down in San Tan Valley which is right by Queen Creek. My neighbors kid plays for them with Isaia. He said he’s a really nice kid and a beast. I’ll be going to some games this year so I plan on keeping a close eye on him.

Of course I asked what his interest in OSU was and he said they are definitely in the hunt.

I actually agree with youngorst 100% on something.

No more fucking politics on this site, it’s so fucking stale and repetitive. If something real actually happens then fine, but the same old shit over and over is so stupid.

    • Thanks for posting.
No surprise to hear Nick channel his inner Casey when asked about motivation in a shortened season, “Whenever they’re keeping score, it’s important..”

  40. Wow sad news about Osia Lewis. Thank you during this time. Funny story he actually kinda stole my girlfriend at the time at western Oregon back in the day. Ha! I met him a few times, good guy, and the girl ended being good riddance for both of us! : )

  41. WBB: Somewhat mixed feelings, but I’ll leave this here:

Kampschroeder said she likes the state of Oregon and the family atmosphere the coaching staff embraces. She will be joined at Oregon State by Talia Von Oelhoffen, the No. 10-rated player in the nation.
Kampschroeder said she plans to study product design with a goal of working for Oregon-based Nike.Ugh

  42. RE: politics, there could be a thread or threads for political topics, and people could entirely skip them and stick to sports threads.

    • 3
      9

Yeah. I can create a new “general thread” and new “sports thread”….general can be under the sports, and anyone who wants to talk about the world can do it there.

      People want that?

      • Sports should be picking back up more and more. I feel like the politics was good a while back cause there was literally nothing else going on. It did get kind of stale though at times was interesting.

        • Hopefully we can buck the trend that’s sweeping the nation and still be respectful of people that disagree with us.

      • Maybe they move one of our OLBs in at DE?
Charles Moore was listed at 6’4″ 255lbs on the Auburn 2019 roster. Bell is listed as the same height but about 10lbs lighter.

        • He would be playing EDGE for us. It’s our deepest position so not sure if we are the best program. He would be competing with Ham, Gumbs, Sharpe, Tago, Murray and McCartan for reps. Our DE need to be in the 270-300 range.

          • I would be surprised if they were recruiting him for the OLB position. I’m wondering if he hasn’t put on weight and is closer to around 270. LB doesn’t make any sense that I can think of.

          • This will probably be the last year where 260s will make the main rotations. Isacc hodgins will be in alot and I think he’s 263. 270 would be awesome.

          • It must not be that big of deal to the staff because I saw an interview where he said he had lost weight on purpose. I think he said it was to be quicker but also got stronger. Maybe he wants to play more downs or perhaps have different packages of smaller quicker lineman for passing downs.

          • That’s my theory. Have high rotation and.confusing rotations to give the linemen fits all day. We only really have two guys big enough to play nose so we need to be disruptive in other ways.

          • I don’t really see that. I think more of situational type packages for pass rush or run downs like 3rd, 4th and short or goal line. It’s not as conventional to sub on D with all of the hurry up no huddle offenses. I would like the team to have a couple more big boys for goal line packages.

    • And now Nemec is following him. So either Nemec is just keeping an eye on things because he gets his leads from Beavrecruiting/Angrybeavs, or he knows something. Hopefully it’s the latter rather than the former, cause that would be sad.

  43. MLB draft is next week.

Three guys with OSU ties listed in ESPN top 150 prospects.
Mick Abel – only comes if he asks for too much money. Seems to be sliding a bit. Recent history has not been kind to right handed high school pitchers chosen in the first round. Hope he realizes the best shot for him to make the majors goes through college. The majority of the best rhp in the league right now all went to college.

Chamberlain – quite the rise for a guy who came in with little hype. Future is likely a long reliever, spot starter role in the big leagues. Unsure if he’d leave if drafted.

Kevin Abel – all depends on his elbow. Hasn’t thrown a competitive pitch in over a year. I’d guess if he goes high enough he’d leave.

With only 5 rounds, I don’t think there’s anyone else who would get drafted. If you’re a senior, you might have to take the 20 grand offered to non drafted players since staying would be worse if the goal is to play in the mlb. I’d say Armstrong, Jones and Mulholland will leave if offered.

    • I read the NBA season will not conclude until October with the current plan of return. How will this affect the following season? I almost wondering if you just cancel this season and start back in October like you normally do. I’m not saying one is better than the other but it seems like some sports seasons will be forever shifted.

      • I would think it would be a short off-season followed by a shortened season with reg playoffs. Players have been off for months so a short off-season wouldn’t be a total killer.

The NBA was already exploring permanently starting the season at Christmas vs the normal Oct start. Timing could work out.

        • Talking about a Christmas open next year, blnot sure of the long term plan, some owners have pushed for a Christmas to August season as the permanent move.

          Players seem opposed.

Smart move to finish the year though, canceling would be a mistake

          • I like the idea of the season running from Christmas to August. Then maybe just maybe free agents will realize Portland is not just rain year round.

    • This is probably a good thing for the season. If teams see infections early and deal with them then the concept will be normalized by late August.

      • I’m picturing a scenario where a position group, like QB for example, all practices with a specific set of practice balls. 1 QB gets sick but before it’s detected, he shares that practice ball with the other QBs. Then bam, every QB tests positive around the same time and needs to be put on quarantine for 14 days.

So what do teams do with no QBs for 2 weeks?
Do they need to keep the QBs separated from each other in practice? Or 1 set of practice balls per player? I know it’s not highly likely they all get sick at once, but it has to be a possible scenario that could play out somewhere. Do we keep Colletto in a glass case. Break in case of emergency only?

Can we stick coach Smith in at QB in this case?

        • I thought they had decided that its unlikely to get coronavirus from a source like a football, doorknob, package etc. And that its mostly person to person contact.

        • This is why having Coletto at LB is brilliant.

Generally surfaces are not showing to be big transmitters. The smart move is masking and keeping distance as much as possible. Huddle’s should probably not be a thing.

I know I’ve been a negative Nancy on this but I just don’t see this season going well. 18-22 year olds are gonna congregate and party in large groups. Games will be missed, might as well just make the whole season an exhibition.

        • Perception is reality. It’s over in peoples’ minds, so it’s over.
It will come back in Fall, but for now people want to forget about it so they are. Though, I was at Home Depot today, and they certainly aren’t acting like it’s over. It was frantic in there.

    NBA coming back

22 teams, 8 regular season games, playin games for 8 seed.

Considering how many teams have newly healthy players this might be fun and I don’t even like the NBA anymore. Bring defense back to basketball!!!

  45. 6
    2

We better hope that we have depth at quarterback because what happens if Gebbia gets COVID? I would guess he’s quarantined for 2 weeks. Hopefully Nolan and others will be ready. Qb is the 1 position where I think there would be a large drop off in production after the starter. I do think Lindgren is smart enough to tailor playcalling to a different QBs strengths however.

      • It’s interesting cause it plays like a minor injury if they don’t get strong symptoms. Out two weeks then back in the season. Maybe hardcore schools like bama and Texas will just time covid parties with their bye weeks. That would be next order wild.

        • So far the MO has been 2 weeks after symptoms go away which would make it a 3 or 4 week absents. Although I have been reading you aren’t really contagious that long so maybe they back off in the 2 week post symptomatic thing

  46. I know I said I would compile a list of top 2021 prospects for OSU, and I still i tend to, but coming back to work after a few days off has me playing catch up, which is higher priority.

To start, here’s a list of guys who have included OSU in their “top schools” lists recently or I’ve just observed our staff going above and beyond with. Hopefully this will be a start and i can build on this later. In no particular order:

    OL-Jaxon McBride
    OL-Jordan Moko(juco)
    OL-Garrett DiGiorgio
    OL-Isaia Glass
    DB/ATH-Chase Lowery
    DB-Christian Jackson
    WR- Ketron Jackson
    WR-Jimmy Valsin
    RB-Damir Collins
    RB-Jonathan Arceneaux
    TE-Carlton Brown(juco)
    ATH-Emari Pait
    DE-JT Byrne

Hope that gives some of you some players to watch

      • Are we still in the running and or going after Bowers? Seems like he would be more of a priority than a juco. Maybe they’re looking for a quitoriano replacement AKA a big bodied blocking TE. He is 6’6 I believe.

  47. Sounds like Barnes had to cut some 23 positions from the athletic department staff, including 16 layoffs(not sure what the other 7 cuts were unless maybe they were unfilled positions they just won’t be filling?)
Names weren’t made public, but one article said Maryanne Vydra was one of the cuts. She has filled in twice as interim AD after the last 2 ADs departed from OSU. I guess Barnes thought it made sense to remove his backup, for job security?

Seems they could have cut coaching salaries and Barnes salary a little more than 7% and that would have saved several of the laid off positions. I mean, the difference of 7% to 10% among the highest paid staff would be a significant chunk of change and could fund several positions, and still seems like a reasonable ask for the higher paid staff members.

      • For the most part coaches are fixed cost given their contracts, you’d have to cut a sport to reduce those cost.

I work for a large organization with 700+ locations when G&A cuts are made director thru SVP levels are at the biggest risks. Coordinations, analyst, accountants…etc generally are ratio based. C-suite changes would be made by the Board. If you trying to get to G&A down to certain % as revenue, Cutting $300k+Bonus+stock SVP gets you much closer to target.

So I guess Angie can say silent commit all she wants without any risk. When someone finally commits she can say she reported it first. What a crock of dux.

      • Easiest to just watch the video or read his explaiation.

tl:dr – dumb group chat video where he thought it was funny to imitate a racist southern guy.

        • I don’t think a tweeted text apology is going to help him. I half expected a hashtag to be included.

Well that’s not going to help OSU’s reputation as a racist school.
I have the SI where they talk about the 28 year losing streak being due to the Pumpkin forcing blacks to shave. If anyone wants to read it I can post it. It’s pretty fascinating, and I think SI took it off their site for some reason. It was a great piece.

          • The current you generation has to deal with an era that documents everything in their lives. From parents posting their kids pics on social media, to the kids themselves on social media. Technology recording everything.

So any terrible decisions they have made will come back to haunt them.

As for Smith. It was an easy call. This didn’t happen under his watch, and most likely he wouldn’t have had knowledge of it beforehand.

          • It’s been addressed by Coach Smith, Scott Barnes, the BeaverAthletics twitter, and now the Oregon State twitter account. Guy went from a relative unknown to twitter infamous in about 1 hour. Imagine it will only escalate as we head into tomorrow’s sports news cycle.

So now we are going to be known for Heimlich and this dude. The basketball team just needs to get somebody running a dog fighting circuit to complete the tri-fecta.

LOL like Oregon State University actually has a “reputation as a racist school”. You really need to get out more.

          • I kind of agree with JJ here. Wasn’t it like 2 or 3 years ago that some race baiting types tried to say Slats Gill was racist because he didn’t have very many black players on his teams? There was an investigation into it that took several months only to find out Slats had offered many black players scholarships but they just didn’t want to go to OSU.

    • So does ASU take him back? Sounds like they already signed a grad transfer to replace him. Can’t imagine they want 2 scholarahips being used by punters

This whole Rocco thing makes me think we need to teach kids risk management skills and critical thinking better. Taking his apology at face value he was talking to people he trusted and making a joke. He made a joke that if ever leaked would jeopordize his entire future and he put the control and power in others hands. If those friendships fall out or one of them just sucks then his life can now be ruined by taking large risks for no real gain.

Flip it to Smith’s decision. He took decisive action with an eniquivocal message. Emotionally it sucks to have to punish a kid for a mistake but this is excellent risk management and critical thinking. He showed his and he he University values, was decisive so the media/social media couldn’t take the narrative and he dismissed the player face to face which I respect. If he defends Rocco in the climate we could get the campus burned down, lose recruits, lose team trust and divide the team and possibly the entire University into a ridiculous pitched battle.

Rocco trusted others and took a huge risk for a giggle.

Smith took a tiny, but sad, risk and avoided a massive issue. He also gained more respect with his team and with future recruits. If you don’t think thissttered to the families and players who come from non-white backgrounds you are very mistaken.

The world of exposure for kids isn’t changing so we need to give them tools to address these decisions in a guided way. Probablistic risk analysis should start early.

    • Don’t do anything stupid, ever, and assume everything you do is recorded and will be used by somebody else at some point in your life to either expose you or gain leverage over you.
I think about this with the googles and facebooks of the world. Gathering huge digital profiles of our lives and activities. That stuff will follow you to the grave, so be cautious.

Technically, this was something Rocco did as a minor that is now coming back to haunt him and he is facing the consequences as an adult. Wonder if that opens up the university to any legal issues down the road?

      • Also curious what happens to the other paties on this group call. What Rocco said is terrible, but you have to imagine with the way the audio was cut and pasted together, that there was a whole lot of other bad stuff being said on that call. Do the other parties get a pass, but Rocco gets called out because he’s part of a bigger organization now like a college football team?
It’s wrong either way, but have to question the motives of the person who exposed only his portion of the conversation. He wasn’t alone

        • The person was right to expose it. What Rocco did was very wrong. Can’t have that.

If the others are named, they’ll get the same punishment. Saying those things should be punished. Teaches a lesson for all others, showing them that saying those things are wrong and have serious consequences.

  50. Sounds like baseball bros not happy about strength coach being let go with budget cuts. Someone on Twitter said Casey offered to dig up the funds from boosters and Barnes said no, it didn’t matter?

If Barnes cut some of his salary, how many lower paid positions could they keep?
