  1. I’ve had the following dogs in my life;

    Golden Retriever
    Husky
    Yellow Lab
    Border Collie

They were all great and loved/love them all!

    Let’s hear your puppy stories!!

      • Had a Queensland/pit mix, most loyal dog in the world, but not a good combo meal. Became VERY protective when our son was born. In San Luis most of my friends had Queenslands, most were intolerable around strangers, or even friends.

Current pooch is completely opposite, Boston Terrier. This dog kicks ass.

        • Ya mine sleeps next to my bed at night and sometimes hears something and barks when I’m completely asleep and scares the shit out of me.

      • My SIL had a Rott. It was a super sweet dog. But one evening we were outside in the backyard and a neighbor cat came into the yard. The rott instantly ran over, grabbed it, and 2 shakes later the cat was dead. Stiff as a board. We were all shocked by what we saw cause it happened so instantaneously and the dog had never shown an agressive streak before in it’s life.
Never found the owner of that cat, so I guess nobody missed it.

        • It was in his territory so that’s instinctive. They have to be trained against that. Mine is almost never on leash and we have kittens, chickens, pigs, other dogs and kids all around but he’s trained not to react to them. My landlord’s dog (pit mix) is a guard dog who stays mostly chained up killed a kitten in 2 bites on Christmas. It was pretty gnarly. She was barking non stop so I went to check it out and there was a kitten sitting just out of reach from the dog. I went to try to get it away from her and she ran away from me right towards the dog and it was over.

      • Here’s a Rottweiler instinct/loyalty story:

My brother lives across the street from me and one day he needed something from my house. He went over mid day and did whatever it was. I got home from work at probably 5:30 and my front door was wide open. Daisy, my Rottweiler was sitting just inside the door where she had apparently been standing guard for hours.

That kind of loyalty and protective instinct is an amazing thing.

    • Rottweiler is absolutely my favorite.

We have a German Shepherd and a Dachshund now, but I will 100% have another Rott, the sooner the better.

      We had Labs growing up.

    • Always had Goldens. We have a female (4) and male (6 months) right now. Sweetest dogs. They’ll always let you know if someone or something is outside but if a burglar broke in they would lick them to death.

        Shelter dogs man, shelter dogs.

2 as a kid, 1 as an adult and the next one will be too.

Did have a great Sheltie in between that my mom bought me for Christmas because when we went to get my Aunt’s Christmas present one of the other puppies fell asleep in my lap. Pretty sure my grandma had to chip in, that dog was coming home with me one way or another.

        • Our Weiner is a rescue, it was obvious she had a pretty shit go of it before we got her. Took her a while to settle in but she’s happy as a clam now. She heads upstairs with my 12 year old and sleeps in his bed every night.

Her breath smells like Bigfoot’s dick, however.

        • A stray collie went under a neighbors house and had a batch of pups. The neighborhood start making sure they were fed and watered. My wife wanted to adopt the mother dog. I said I did not want anymore dogs and that we had plenty of animals to take care of.

So we ended up with the mother and the last pup. Very loving dogs.

      • Yeah, labs as well. I had a lab/rott/shep mix, a free dog off craigslist turned out to be the best dog i’ve ever owned.

      • Labs are the hairiest damn dogs, shedding everywhere — their biggest drawback for me. Especially since my wife won’t cleanup, practically refuses to. Since my son’s birth, I just can’t keep up with the Lab too. She has the sweetest demeanor, but I won’t get a Lab again — she is fourteen years old. We have a Chihuahua/King Charles mix….the best dog I’ve ever had as far as demeanor. I’ve also had Skipperkee, Golden Retreiver, Terrier, and Malamute through the years.
My bro had an Australian cattle/ Sheba Inu mix that was pretty awesome – – smart, alert, weighing around 45 lbs….the perfect dog IMO.

    • Anybody ever had a boxer? If my family decides to get another dog, I’ve been pushing for a boxer puppy, but i really haven’t researched that breed to see if they make good family pets

    • Black lab, yellow lab, and now a silver lab. All great dogs. Super sweet, social, curious, and always up for fun. I got them all as puppies. With the current one, I’d take her downtown often when she was 9-14 weeks, just to get her used to noise, activity, and people. I loved watching people light up when they’d see her and she’d get mobbed.

      • I’ve had a few Jack Russell terriers that I preferred to most people I have met. They made pretty good ranch dogs because they love killing things. Usually focusing on rodents, but I found a few quail and killdeer on the back porch. They need a “job” or they can be a little hard to deal with.

    • Husky, black lab, English setter, English pointer, pit bull, Australian Shepherd (my current dog). I love Huskies but they have no loyalty, they are everyone’s dog.The next 3 were bird hunting dogs, something I loved doing with my dad. The setter and the lab(obviously) were also great family dogs. That pointer though so high strung. When hunting she would run looking &smelling for the birds until her pads were bloody. Great hunting drive and that equated to she tried to hunt every bird in the yard and she didn’t want to be interrupted for family time. The pit bull was a real sweetheart if you were in the family. Strangers, set her off though so she never left home. My Australian Shepherd was supposed to be my daughter’s dog but Alas he chose me (and she got another lab a few months later). He’s super smart and remembers everything. I’ve managed to curb his herrding drive by playing fetch for about an hour a day. He just loves running as fast as he can. He’s fairly independent in that he doesn’t want attention all the time but he will definitely let me know when he wants attention.

  2. I was supposed to go to Virginia for an internship with a construction firm, but decided in mid May that I wasn’t going to go and just do everything remotely. I really wanted to go because I get to see my high school buds again.

Looks like that was the right decision. The number of cases in central Virginia counties are exploding, right as Governor Northram is about to announce Phase 2 reopening.

  3. My cheepo tie-me-over grill is kaput. In the market for a new, nice one. Possibilities:
Traeger : spendy, not sure about temperature, some people swear by them, some swear at them
Weber Genesis: Excellent propane grill, but not sure I want to stick with propane again and may want to branch out (sorry Hank Hill).
Komodo Egg : also spendy, people rave about them but not sure how easy it is to get used to cooking on it.
Weber Kettle : cheap, classic but uninspiring.

You guys have any thoughts, recommendations, warnings? I would be a relative newby cooking on solid fuel so take that into account. I have a lot of experience cooking on standard appliances.

    thanks,
    marco

    • Depends on what exactly you want to cook. I have 2 traegers, a weber kettle and a weber propane. I smoke on the traegers, BBQ on the kettle and grill/sear on the gas. Nothing out there truly covers all bases. What do you cook mostly?

      • Dude, you’re pretty serious. Being Italian, most of my sensibilities run in that direction but I do have a propane wok burner and a sous vide machine that I use pretty frequently. I do most of the cooking for my family and hold large extended family gatherings on holidays.

        • I just got into sous vide last December (black Friday sale on a machine). I have to say, it makes a damn good steak and does a good tri-tip althoughI’m more partial to traditional tri-tip. Im just not quite use to the even color of the meat. I actually just got a set up to do full packer briskets or multiple porkbutts at once.

        • I’m on the second cover for it. The first was almost all duct tape by the time I broke down and bought the second one. Also got a “basket” to put on the grill for such things as roasts or turkeys.

    • Had my green egg for 8 years now. I haven’t found anything I can’t do on it. Sear a steak at 650. Great pizza. Slow roast/reverse sear a prime rib, smoked ribs, brisket, pork butt, chicken, etc. even cold smoked cheese. It’s pretty easy to use. Temperature is just controlled by air flow, so simply adjust the openings at the top and bottom. Can’t beat the flavor of lump charcoal in my opinion.

      • Does it requlre a lot of fuel? It looks like the coals are pretty far away from the grills. Does the food get much radiant heat?

        • They do hold a lot of heat. Its basically an extremely heavy ceramic pot with a lid. And I will amend what I said above about one thing not being able to do all. Green eggs and there ilk can do pretty much do everything. You just use charcoal of any type.

        • They’re pretty efficient. They’re designed for optimal natural convection, so they produce a lot of heat with not a lot of fuel. That’s why the grill is farther from the coals than other grills.

    • I have a Green Mountain pellet smoker and a Weber grille that I converted to use natural gas from the house so I never run out.

I’ve owned a pile of random grilles over the years and I’m glad I finally bought that Weber. Every few years I make a run to Jerry’s and buy new grates and shields right off the shelf and it’s like brand new again.

The Green Mountain has been great too I smoked some cheese in it recently and it turned out really good.

      • My brother-in-law has a Weber Genesis and it’s really well built. If I’m going Propane, that will be the one I think.

        • I have a louisiana grill, got it for a gift to replace traegar, they are pretty much the same. One difference is the siding cooking shield that allows open flame grilling. Its nice feature, I’m still getting used to bbq’ing over flame again. Overall its pretty good, but not perfect. However as gift, its awesome

    • If you have a solid amount of expendable income; GrillWorks makes a home version of their commercial grills. USA made. Will last you a lifetime.

  4. Kiddo graduating from Corvallis High this weekend. 509J has done a pretty decent job of trying to put together something good for the kids…police escorted ‘motorcade’ through town, jump out of the car at the school grab diploma and they’re on to life…radio play by play and youtube version for grandma to view from home.

Next stop OSU honors college, curious to see how the handle the dorm situation.

Oh, and it turns out F King is a customer.

Sheeba Inu. Knew nothing about this breed until shortly before getting one at 4 months.
Incredible dogs. 20 to 25 lbs. at maturity, nothing their size can outrun them. Strikingly beautiful, the cinammon ones
resemble a fox. Travels well, great with people and kids, playful, alert, knew to go potty outside the 2nd day I had her. Their ears stay up even when sleeping.
Double coated, comfortable in rain, snow, cold, heat. Quiet and covert like a cat. Very clean. Fearless; I watched her
kill a 10″ wood rat in the yard with deadly efficiency. Not a spot of blood on her coat. A barrel of monkeys, just a fun
dog. Very social, they do require interaction/play/walk every day. Doesn’t dig, and stays away from mud puddles and such.
There is one drawback, they are serious runners. That is why you will never see one off leash in public.

Small dogs for us. Shetland Sheepdog and a Havashu (8 lbs of spastic joy). Had a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel before that.

  7. Standard Poodles are fantastic. Super smart, no shedding, big enough to be an effective watchdog/deterrent. Also the only non-husky breed to finish the Iditarod.

The grooming is the only downside, but that’s the price you pay for no shedding.

  8. Both my sons have Traegers. They work well I guess, but everything cooked tastes the same IMO. Could it be in the preparation?

    • That’s an interesting comment about tasting the same. Noted propane salesman Hank Hill would often quip “Taste the meat, not the heat.” I wonder if there is more truth to that than I expected.

  9. Cast aluminum Weber with propane. Very durable, highly recommended if you can find on sale. I know others like briquets, but I like the convenience of propane and I tend to think the food prep and heat consistency are better predictors of a good product over the fuel source.

Country cat: got my kid a couple of kittens from a family down the road last year. She LOVES cats. Usually, I’m not home consistently enough to have a dog, though I wish I was. During this lockdown it actually would have been a good time to get one and be able to raise it. I’m curious about some kind of Bernese Mountain Dog cross; the breed interests me me because they’re allegedly loyal to family and site (don’t stray) and are protective but not aggressive. I also like the size. I just wonder if there’s a good, healthy cross that gives them a little more energy and personality?

      • Nm they’re distant relatives both bred off of the mastiff. You can get a cross between them and it will have more energy than a purebred bernese. They don’t look as good as a purebred does of either imo tho.

    • There are caveats with those large/giant breed dogs. As a general rule Bernese and Newfs are awesome dogs. If you decide to have one in your house you’ll need to not put anything moveable on your coffee or end tables because big dufus’s baseball bat tail will knock that shit right off on to the floor. Also don’t walk away from anything edible on the counter or table because they’re tall enough to walk right up and plant their big old fuzzy snuffer right up on the counter and inhale a plate of hotdogs before you even know what happened.

Also, Newfoundlands are thick coated water dogs that get hot inside. And after you spend hours brushing and snipping and bathing big dummy will walk outside to piss and flop down spread eagle in the middle of the lawn in a driving rain storm to cool off.

    • Also that 2020 fullback I had mentioned a couple weeks back is still planning to commit on his birthday(june 9th)
I would have to assume PWO, but i’ll take any positive news I can get.

Have no idea if Collins pulls any teammates with him. Rawlins-Kibonge is the guy most teams are trying to land, but I don’t see him landing at OSU. Stanford seems more likely for him.
I like a 2021 WR, Anderson, at Jefferson. But as far as I know, OSU isn’t showing much interest in him. He would come here in a heartbeat, but his only offer right now is PSU, so doesn’t seem likely he gets an OSU offer unless they like what they see from him in his senior season.

  10. Sitting on the deck overlooking the pacific, sipping a Melvin 2×4, sun is shining, graduation was better than expected…pretty good freaking day.

    Cheers, my friends

I think the chase instinct is imbedded in them. They were bred to go after varmints and bears in japan. They are a strong willed, confident and self assured
dog too. If you get them into training early, they will accept the command of stay, leave it, drop, and that’s about it. Seriously, that is
about as far as you can get with them, but their individual traits are so amazing, anything else doesn’t matter. I know the feeling, my brother in law & I chased her for damn near a mile once, in portland, on thanksgiving day. Lol.

  12. How does the transfer portal work recruiting wise? It looks like there are some quality defensive linemen and DBs. Also I think a tall WR from bama just entered.

    • The bama wr is 6’6 and immediately eligible. Also would think a tackle would be a nice pickup. Is there anyway to see if the staff is recruiting transfers?

      • The transfer portal is basically a free for all. Once an athlete enters their name in, any school is allowed to contact them. Can’t see who is recruiting who, unless the athlete says who they are interested in. I’m sure every staff in the country has someone watching the portal and reaches out to anyone that fits a need.

Based on what I’ve seen, it really helps to have had some kind of prior relationship. If the coach recruited the player in high school, that is an advantage as seen with the transfers OSU has picked up or lost in all sports.

Don’t get your hopes up on guys out east as they likely don’t have any kind of relationship with OSU. That’s why Charles Moore coming was a head scratcher.

On Wednesday June 17 I am hosting a backyard BBQ for family and OSU friends to celebrate the next 4 years of Oregon State football. Drinks will be flowing as long as Damir Collins commits as we are all excited for. Key piece to Smith and crew taking the next step to multiple bowl appearances and competing for Pac-12 North titles. Coach Pitre is the best RB coach in the West IMO so feel very optimistic, but really hoping this is a proper celebration Wednesday after next on Damir’s birthday. OSU will be in the think of things in the Pac-12 for several uocoming years if so.

    https://www.oregonlive.com/recruiting/2020/06/damir-collins-nations-no-2-all-purpose-back-sets-commitment-date-oregon-state-beavers-among-favorites.html

    • Last night I had a dream the Beavs won another baseball championship….another comeback win!!! Wishing that will happen in the next 5 years or so!!! LOL

    • I started to read about it, then thought, wtf why not watch it and went to you tube and watched both games.

      It’s still awesome…

    • Sounds like Cal and UCLA might be the frontrunners at this point from reading his comments. Hopefully he’s one of those guys who values a team being the first one to recruit him heavily.

    • Well, that will likely inspire some Beaver football players…4(!) teams, 6 players….

The Beavers D talent in particular is underestimated, I kind of get the offense with the big producers gone (Luton, Hodgins), but I think there are LBs who are going to make that list look differently post season, as well as maybe a QB, TE, and WR…

      • I think you are right and would add the possibility of a Beav DL being on, at least, the 3rd or 4th team at seasons end.

  14. Since this is an anything goes thread, here’s something not sports-related:
    https://charleseisenstein.org/essays/the-conspiracy-myth/

The article this was in response to is also highly worth reading:
    https://charleseisenstein.org/essays/the-coronation/

Both are about how we understand mainstream narrative vs. alternative theories and how we interact with others who hold different beliefs.

Basically, our socialized instinct is to view these interactions as a confrontation, when instead we should be listening to what the other person is saying to try to identify elements that ring true. Rather than starting from a place where our views are right, everyone else is wrong, and we need to win the war on what’s wrong, we should have the humility to recognize that we never have a grasp on absolute truth, so we should remain open to learning from unexpected places.

    • Conspiracies do happen, that shouldn’t be ignored but the danger this view (essentially truth is relative) is that it gives as much value intentional misinformation as it does to honest disagreement over what the facts are saying.

      • Very good point about the need for commonly held objective truths.

I think the view is less that all truth is relative and more that narratives, systems of belief, etc. are made up of so many elements that we never really have the whole story. We can have some truths without having the whole Truth. He doesn’t really get into how to approach specific points, but focuses more on approaching people and their systems of belief. If someone is purposely trying to deceive you, you should approach them differently than someone who genuinely believes something like ‘the Earth is flat.’

        • This is true even in a court of law. A jury rarely (I can’t say never since I don’t have all the facts) hears/sees all of the facts in a case. Many facts are withheld because they were obtained improperly. And some things being claimed as facts aren’t proven so. Jurors are expected to deduct conclusions based on limited facts and many times they come to the wrong conclusion. It’s no wonder a lot of people are wrongly convicted of crimes.

          • The biggest problem with the court system is it doesn’t work the way I believe it is intended.

Defense attorneys are absolutely 100% suppose to represent only the interests of the defendant(s) but the police/courts job isn’t suppose to be to do everything they can to get a conviction, their job is to seek truth and justice.

Sadly I feel many police/prosecutors/judges have lost sight of this.

          • Having served on grand jury where you only get to hear one side of the story, the prosecutors throw everything they can at the defendant to scare the crap out of them(shit! If I lose this I will get 30 years, or I can admit to this one charge and get 1 year) and try to get them to admit to something lesser and then the prosecutor never even has to go to trial.

  15. Has anyone heard anything about Gumbs recovery after tearing his other ACL during the Hawaii game last year?

Interesting to know if he’d be able to contribute early this season, and if he’s back to full strength.

  16. If OSU can land both Collins and Spielman somehow, and they announce right after each other within a couple days, the weekend after next could be HUGE for the program. If Smith, Pitre and Hynson can pull this off, Beaver Nation is going to be in a wild frenzy. Keep your seat buckles tight as program defining recruits could be just around the corner. Damir a must get on June 17 and a Friday June 19 commit of Spielman would absolutely take the excitement to the moon for these two if it can happen.

    • It seems pretty likely we are getting Speilman…. He was working out in the spring with one of our receivers, that’s likely where he got the helmet for the post… after reading the Nebraska blogs it’s pretty clear… He had great chemistry with Gebbia… He like many others thought Gebbia should have started over Martinez… Sounds like Scott is not a players coach and it’s biting him hard now

      • If it’s not OSU it’s got to be Minnesota from what I’ve read. Uts where he’s from and they had recruited him. It seems like the easier place to get a waiver since his family is there.

So the recession officially began in February prior to the lockdowns.

Not that it changes anything but interesting.

What the fuck are you talking about? The meaning hasn’t been changed. Fuck, never mind. Believe whatever bullshit you want.

        The best economy ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

            7

Whatever man, I honestly don’t care what you believe.

People that want to believe everyone is lying to them (ie you) are gonna believe everyone is lying to them.

I posted a simple statement based on nothing political and you couldn’t handle it.

Here’s another fact, 8 of the last 9 recessions (not counting 2020 because you don’t believe it is a recession) started under GOP Presidents.

Of course I am betting you deny that fact too.

          • 4
            1

You assume a lot. If you dont see the politics in the NBER then whatever. If you choose to not see political pundits now move the goal post from coronavirus recession to trumps fault recession, fine. There are people out their right now pushing that narrative exactly.

    • Recession is two quarters of falling growth. GDP fell in Q1 and you can bet it will fall in Q2.

      No one’s changing any definitions.

      • 3
        1

changing definition may be the wrong use of words. You are correct about 2 quarters of falling growth. Its super convenient for them to start using NBER version which uses different parameters then the typically held 2 quarter drop. No one is arguing that were not in a recession. The argument is timing. We slowed in February which was forseen as early as August then the dump in March. Gdp didn’t go negative til March. They are trying to make it look like the recession has nothing to do with the virus. In fact that how some lefty blue check Twitter users are tweeting right now.

        • 2
          7

          Super convenient for who?

The world isn’t out to get conservatives.

You guys aren’t victims of some vast left wing conspiracy no matter how much you believe you are.

        • You might want to leave the word tweeting out of your comments–it’s an indefensible position given the tweets provided by Agolf Twitler.

Buffalo agitator is Antifa? Child, please…and the Pres, who has the greatest intelligence community in the world gets his info from OANN and a Sputnik reporter?

Don’t get me started on “I will never lie to you” Kayleigh Barbie. “All the Pres was doing was raising questions”

And why can’t anyone other than Romney opine on the tweet? They haven’t read/heard of it? Makes you wonder why they are in office.

This train of consciousness makes me feel like Fred Willard in Fernwood Tonight.

  18. Any guesses on where Kevin Abel, Chamberlain, and Mick Abel go in the draft? MLB draft is one of the only sports-related content out there so should offer some respite from boredom.

      • Surprised(or maybe not really surprised) Mick Abel hasn’t gotten more publicity on oregonlive. It’s not that often a local guy is projected in the 1st round of a professional league draft, and he’s only a HS senior.

          • I wouldn’t be surprised if the mariners pick him up at 6, he is just down the road, so I imagine they have scouted him well… I think they only do this if Gonzales is not on the board

          • 2
            4

Doubt the Mariners take Abel. Seriously doubt it.

If they draft anyone other than one of the consensus top 6 it will be because that player agrees to sign for significantly below slot, Abel isn’t that guy.

Mariners far more likely to take Hancock, Meyer, or Detmers if Gonzalez is off the board (might take one of those 3 over Gonzales honestly).

The only high school player I could see Seattle considering at 6 is Zach Veen if he makes it out of the top 5.

    • youngorst… questioning your logic… no one is projecting Abel in the top 10 only you lol… you say above that he will go top 10… then you say the mariners won’t take him at 6, then you say it’s because he’s too young, then you remove that from your comment… then you say it’s about money, but you do realize the mariners are rebuilding and don’t have a lot of salary cost at moment? all I was saying is if anyone is going to take him early it’s the mariners… I guess I just get tired of people who criticize for no reason, so here you go, right back at cha

        • 5
          1

Lol… look again… 10-15 is top ten if he is picked number 10… it’s more like outside the top ten, but sure he’s not alone… oregonlive, really?… maybe he should write for them… they are after all the standard when it comes to everything… get out of here with this stuff… I hope you were being sarcastic

        • 3
          2

          Sarcastic?
I just read the article minutes before I saw your post, so it stuck out. I was surprised to see him projected top 10 too, but there it was, the number 10 right there in the article. Yes, 10-15 only counts as top 10 if he’s picked 10. No shit.

And a minute later you were saying nobody projects top 10, but I just read projection with 10 in it so it seemed relavant to share the article.
It wasn’t Canzano or Moran making the projection. It looks like Joe Freeman is just reporting what people close to Abel have told him.

      • 1
        2

I did not remove anything from any comment and I stand by my comments in their entirety.

And I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt on the money thing, guessing you don’t know how money works with the draft, teams are capped and all MLB teams make draft decisions based around spreading that money around to the right combination of talent over the full draft, even the Yankees

        • I understand that lol… they have almost 6 million alloted to their first pick… 10 million total for the whole draft… Don’t talk about what you don’t know

          • 1
            4

Lol, it’s cute you think you just told me something I wasn’t aware of.

Fine, here’s why Seattle won’t take Abel

1 of Meyer, Hancock, or Gonzalez will be there and all 3 are better prospects, again top 6 is not top 10.

But you’re the expert here so tell me how I’m wrong?

          • All I said is it is possible… You are truly ridiculous… Didnt know I was talking to Harold Reynolds… Sorry bro, my bad

          • You also accused me of editing my work and lying that projections had Abel top 10 so I’m not buying your sudden fake outrage.

Is it possible? Anything is possible.
Which is why I said “doubt” and I didn’t say won’t.

        • I actually read the Abel – decided not to try a Cain reference – and saw this:

‘Mick Abel’s older brother Kevin is also expected to be drafted next week, more likely on Day two. He is a pitcher at Oregon State, where Mick is also committed.’

I thought I read on AB they are not brothers?

    Okay, late to the thread.

Dogs: Grew up with German Shepherds but have had Labs for past 20 years… love them doggies. They have 27.9k followers on Instagram… crazy. @itsmiaandsophia

BBQ: Haven’t used mine since we got the Phillips Air Fryer. Cooks my Rib Eyes perfectly every time.

OSU: Wouldn’t it be the luck of the Beavs to have the best recruiting classes ever coming in and COVID-19 wipes out college sports for several years.

    • I can’t wait… Well written show… Def not one to watch around the kids! Lol… plus Ryan Bingham acts in it, great musician if you haven’t heard of him

      • So far Bingham has only been in a few episodes of Season 1. He was taken to the “train station”, but got a reprieve.

        Kelly Reilly!

    • Just about done with season 2. It’s nice to see Costner stretch out a bit at this point in his career. The Netflix movie he did with Harrelson on Bonnie and Clyde was great. He typically only gets supporting roles in movies now.
If you like Yellowstone – check out all of Taylor Sheridan’s films – Hell or Highwater, Wind River and both the Sicaro films. Great writer.

  20. UCF football has completed their first round of “back to practice” Covid19 testing. 3 out of 60 athletes test positive, or about 5%.

Also helps put some perspective on the totals from Alabama and Ok State. If the denominator this time of year is only 60(not testing freshman yet i guess?) then Alabama had over 8% of their team test positive in this round of testing.

    • 2
      1

Positive as in the player has COVID currently? What happens next? Quarantine? What about the other players they’ve been around?

      • Yes, and quarantine. Dont think they had any special treatment for players they’ve been around, but I would suspect they will test everybody every week or few days to stay on top of the positive cases. But if 8% of your team is currently sick every week, seems you would quickly run out of players who haven’t already had it and recovered.

  21. Here to Mick asking for way too much money which causes him to enroll at OSU. I would think if he falls outside the top 20, he comes to school.

    • 2
      3

Rumor is that his number is 4.7 million which makes him over slot for any team picking outside top 10. That said, if a team really likes him they can easily draft some under slot guys in later rounds to make up the difference.

I hope he comes to OSU but I have my doubts.

One possibility is a team in the top 10 takes him because 4.7 is under slot at that point but with guys like Hancock, Meyer, Detmers being what you hope Abel is in 3 years I have a difficult time seeing anyone before Pittsburgh at 8 (Pirates would still save about $700K if they gave him 4.7) taking Abel.

Pirates, White Sox (pick 12) and Red Sox (pick 18) are the most common landing spots in mocks over the last few weeks, most mocks have settled on the Red Sox at 18 (slot is $3.6 million) as his most likely destination. The Red Sox could easily make up that $1.1 million by taking under slot guys later.

I doubt anyone takes him without a deal in place before hand. With only 5 rounds in the draft I don’t see many teams punting picks this year (although there are rumors of at least 1 top 10 team that is planning to do just that which seems crazy to me but owners are cheap).

  22. Found a little more context around the positive Covid19 cases on the Alabama football team. 5 tested positive out of only 50 tested players currently on campus.
    10%
At that rate, that team should have herd immunity by the start of the season. Maybe that’s their plan?

    • I bet you that the serious football schools discreetly encourage some form of “coronavirus party” within the team to get infections over and done with before the season starts.

  23. Saw Kolby Taylor has graduated this term. He’s a guy I could see possibly grad transferring to an arizona or ASU.
If that happens, a JD Spielman transfer would actually make some sense. Just something worth keeping an eye on.

Really any spring graduate should be on watch.

    • Jaydon Grant graduates w/2 years of eligibility left. Guess he can focus a lot on CB skills now? He could make a noticeable move up.

    • SSmith really hasn’t had that many transfers aside from all of the safeties. The only other one I can think of is the lb that transferred to Hawaii.

  24. Listening to some talking heads connected to Mariners, Kevin Able has been linked to the Mariners as a potential 3rd or 4th round pick.

  25. Pretty significant statement by Nascar today. They’re banning the display of the comfederate flag at any of their events. This includes fans. Not sure how they plan to enforce it. Especially in a state like Mississippi, where the confederate design is embeded withing the state flag.

    https://twitter.com/NASCAR/status/1270819350644211719?s=19

So how long till Oregon and Oregon State decide to do away with the term “Civil War” to describe their rivalry? Not saying I want that to happen, but I can see that happening.

    • None, because it has no ties to the US civil war and there aren’t Confederate flags flying at either school. Civil war is also a general term not exclusively used in the US.

  26. MLB analysts saying this year’s draft has set a record for first consecutive picks coming from college with no high schoolera mixed in. Just 6 picks in was the new record.(now 7 picks in a row are from college)
Seems to be good news for Beaver fans hoping to see Abel slide a little.

  27. Idk if any of you guys have checked out the top signees of all time by position on the rivals site at all but I went through them and sort of categorized them all. The DL is not included because that one was behind a pay wall for some reason so it’s out of 71 because they did the top 11 LBs.

28 players that started or made a meaningful impact

11 stayed with the team but made little to no impact

    8 medically retired

    12 transferred

    3 were kicked off

9 either redshirted or haven’t played a season yet

Its surprising going through those lists and remembering being excited that we got these guys and then they turn out to be flops. I think OSU has to be a school that is creative and savvy in the recruiting and so far I think Smith is. They also have to leave no stone unturned like Vidlak for example. Hopefully they’re good talent evaluators but I think we’ll know if they are much better after this season. If the JC guys from last year and this year play well I think we’ll have our answer there. We aren’t the school that’s going to land blue chippers every year so all those things above become more important they can’t afford a bunch of misses. I do think you can recruit to Corvallis however and Smith seems to be doing it well. With more success there will be more momentum in recruuting.

    • I like that they contact and offer unattainable recruits too. Could pay dividends later and we can get lucky on some. 4/5 star kids will usually come from a good program. That relationship could yield many quality 3 star players too.

      • I agree with the way transfers are so prevalent now it’s good to have those relationships. I think after going through those lists the most important thing is finding the right guys that won’t become a casualty to academics, the law, transfer, or medical retirement which you probably can’t forsee. The more guys you can keep in the program the better. Then you have a strong culture where everyone knows what is expected of them and aren’t trying to constantly plug holes with JC or transfers.

  28. Anyone get some gold on that dip into the 1600s? I see premiums are down a bit. Still pretty high.
I loaded up on gold stocks yesterday. They were up 5% in one day. Jeez. The dollar is in major trouble. Interest rates pegged at 0% until at least 2022? Not good.

      • Yeah I saw that, and I’ve been closely following the main street move into stocks. It reminds me so much of 1999. Been watching my three favorite indicators. Yesterday they triggered. So I “went short” stocks indexes by going long gold stocks. It was the best play given the high cost of options and ridiculousness of bonds. My hunch is Wall St is about to rip Main Street’s faces off. There is a lot of amateur money to collect.

Brandon Sprauge must be shitting his pants.

        • I saw something about the Google search term “Day trading” being at all-time highs, waaaaaaaaaay above previous highs. That’s a pretty good indicator.

          • The best indicators are “fear and greed index” at “extreme greed” and a Vix under 18. We got close on both but not quite hitting either. I think FG index got to 68 and Vix to 23. Good enough to know it’s time…

Best general, big picture are Cape ratios and Buffet indicator. Both show insanely overpriced. Most ever. It’s really ’99 again.

          • Correct me if I am wrong but I don’t think the fed had 0% rates, unlimited bond buying authority and a congress and president will to spend 3 trillion a year in deficit spending in 1999.

          • Correct me if I am wrong but I don’t think the fed had 0% rates, unlimited bond buying authority and a congress and president will to spend 3 trillion a year in deficit spending in 1999.

They had bond buying authority, but the rest is correct, yeah.
They did cause that bubble via lowering rates, though, it’s just the starting point of rates was much higher. The math of the current situation is that rates have to be -3% to get us out of recession. That’s a negative. Since they probably won’t go negative in nominal terms, it means they will go negative in real terms via massive bond buying and/or MMT. i.e. a higher inflation tax.

Who knew the alt-righters nominated the biggest socialists in history?? Yesterday the Republicans were firmly anti second round of stimulus checks. That’s going to change fast. Hell, at this rate it might be signed by the end of the day.

        • I’m not sure, but what this definitely is is the smart money collecting their pennies from all the dumb money that piled in.

My hunch is soon we get some propaganda about a vaccine that makes the market go nuts to the upside. Every time we get a 3% drop we magically get headlines about vaccine progress. What triggers the next huge leg down where real investors pile in is anybody’s guess. Could be buyer fatigue, return to work (less degenerates piling in), etc. At some point the smart money will own the stocks. There’s a great quote that in bear markets stocks return to their rightful owners. The rightful owner isn’t dumb, speculative money.

P.S. Jomo (joy of missing out) is the opposite of Fomo. I thought that was pretty funny.

          • My portfolio is mostly pm stocks and a little biotech. All the rest is cash. Waiting for reality so I can deploy it. Might be a long wait.

          • Agree, TX, on the long wait.

Right now about 20% in stocks is the proper math using probabilities. You could argue with 0% rates forever, stocks should carry a premium and thus you should have more. It’s somewhat valid. I have about 22% in stocks currently and very specific names/sectors. I would not be buying indexes here.

I refuse to hold cash, so anything not in PMs or stocks is in bonds. They are shitty, but less shitty than cash (for now…watching this closely) because you at least get some return, and possibly capital gains as the FED buys them from you.

PS. I’ve been away from AB because I’ve been tasked with managing money for family and friends. We’re talking millions. It’s stressful. But they’re clueless about what to do for the times, so I have to rebalance everything. They have portfolios setup for the past paradigm, but not at all for where things are going.

          • OldBeav, no…they don’t own any to sell, and they are afraid tenants won’t be able to pay when I suggested that as income over some of the crap they own.

          • I don’t see any reason to hold a strong view on cash right now. We’re headed for short-term deflation, and at least a 20% correction, so it makes sense from that perspective. Will the dollar be dumped from reserve status eventually? Yes, but that’s one of those stories that’s still too opaque or inconceivable to the general market. You’ll have some advance notice on that trade before it really hits.

Bonds get caught up in the volatility of big market moves, so you will eventually get a capital revaluation that wipes out your yield gains. Not immune to risk.

          • It’s not deflation, it’s deleveraging. People seem to really confuse this very important distinction with a difference.

I’m seeing inflation in everything…meanwhile, debt is deleveraging via FED created money. There is some link between the two, and some inflation is supply chain, but this looks a lot like stagflation.

The global demand for dollars will put a floor under it, I guess. Though a real blackswan will be if Countries settle those debts in other ways. They’re trying. Nobody seems to be factoring in this, either.

  29. To the draft watchers: is there a chance Abel or Chamberlain leave OSU if they get drafted? I’m seeing both are sort of on the fringe of the top 150 in prospect rankings, so that would suggest both have a pretty strong chance of being taken.

    • It’s really hard to make a decision here. If they stay, it hurts their status as prospects as they are a year older. If they go, they could sacrifice a chance at being a first rounder and more security.

Chamberlain and Abel both have a chance to be first round picks if they stay and have a good next year. But money now is safer.

My guess is they both go if drafted high enough. I’m sure teams already know what the asking price are and if players want to stay or not.

Guys like Mulholland and Jones are screwed. Both had a chance to move up the draft boards but now will have to take the measly 20k, if it’s even offered. Could see Mulholland coming back since his draft prospects are virtually nil even next year as he’d be essentially a fifth year senior.

      • Chamberlain loses leverage if he comes back as a senior. Even if he improves his draft stock his lack of leverage as a senior would likely cost him money.

(Note: Not sure if Covid means he is a Junior again).

Abel is technically a draft eligible sophomore so he’d still have the leverage as a Junior next year.

Ultimately if they get drafted it is likely because they’ve already agreed to a deal.

        • I believe they all get a year back in eligibility. But in baseball it doesn’t matter. Age is the big factor for pro prospects.

          • Oh absolutely but as an older Junior you still have more leverage than a younger Senior.

Regardless of age it is almost always a mistake for a Junior that goes in the top 10 rounds to return for their Senior year. The Covid extra year of eligibility coupled with a 5 round draft and only 20K for undrafted guys throws a wrench in the conventional knowledge though.

Ultimately, if they get drafted they are going to sign in my opinion. If they go undrafted they likely return. Seniors get 10-25K bonuses all the time, no reason to take that now when a strong Redshirt Junior year might get you 100-250K in 2021 just due to the leverage you have.

      • It’s a good point about players like Mulholland and Jones getting unlucky with the way the draft is. I think Kevin Abel already withdrew from school and won’t return next season regardless, unless I’m misinterpreting the rules.

I don’t think Chamberlain will return to school IF he gets drafted. If he does get drafted that means his agent negotiated a below slot signing bonus since the max bonus for undrafted players is $20K. The thing about Chamberlain is that he has great stuff as a pitcher but the knock on him is that he’s undersized, and staying for another year won’t help that. If he does return, the benefit is that he will probably get a larger bonus since next year’s draft will be 20+ rounds but he is also risking injury.

  30. Xavier Ward just got a bunch of crystal balls for Wazzu. I’ve always liked family connections but we do have a bunch of QBs.

    • Hmmm I thought I looked the other day and he had moved up to warm on OSU. I wonder if they are even still recruiting any QBs now that they have Vidlak. It’s good to play the odds and have plenty of QBs until you know you have a solid 3 deep or so but you also don’t want it too crowded and have guys transferring.

  31. So I knew a second wave was coming, but I did think we’d at least get a Summer in.
    This is going to suck.

Might be the final nail in hopes of a MLB season, and it puts NCAA football in question. I was hoping heat would at least give us a summer/reprieve.

      • Pretty much everywhere that has opened early and fully.

Houston is making news as a disaster zone. Word is they have to shut down again. CA 3.5k new cases today. Florida nearly 2k. AZ 1.5k. Not good. We were told heat/low humidity would give a reprieve.

I don’t know if the people are going to do this and stay home again, so it could get nasty…

Nuclear, I didn’t say there was scientific reasoning behind anything, but I was simply hoping heat would kill this thing and we’d at least get 3 months to live life.

        • For sure, most viruses are not heat stable. Judging by Brazil and India Covid definitely is. I very much doubt full isolation happens again. From the start it was about buying time for hospitals. If we go into isolation again it needs to be for the purpose of eliminating the virus, that timeline is way longer and interaction limiting than what we already did.

It’s just going to be a fact of life. Protect yourself with distancing and masking.

          • Better head to his upcoming Rally’s to find out the new field goals!

If we get out of this is with half a million dead and 50% GDP we will really be in a good spot. Why did the Democrats do this?

Seriously, he couldn’t be telling us he is really the 2nd Confederate President anymore clearly.

            But I know, he’s not a racist.

          • I’m guessing it’s not actually temperature although that is a factor. But, I doubt it ever gets hot enough to matter. I would more suspect the additional UV exposure from the sunlight. But, I’m not a virologist, never played on on TV and didn’t sleep in a holiday in last night.

        • 2
          1

“Places that opened early and fully”

That’s not a second wave…they only slowed a first wave.

Heat does have an impact but when your inside and using recirculating air, that spreads the infection.

Also the metrics are changing now. The raw number of new cases isn’t as useful as testing ramps up. It’s percent of tests coming back positive and hospitalization rates. And the projected R0 rates. If they can get them under 1, then that means positive cases would be more isolated vs widespread community transmission.

States won’t shut down again unless they start seeing large hospitalizations and high death counts. And states in the sun belt don’t really seem to care so sports may still be on.

    • There was really no data or scientific explanation for why the numbers would stay the same or better when people stopped masking and distancing. We’re in for a hard run now. People who aren’t taking masking seriously won’t until they or someone close gets sick.

    • Seems odd he would he need a disclaimer for a Democratic hoax?

Everyone knows it isn’t really killing anyone, just a cold.

      • 3

His vanity and desperation are more important than his supporters lives. I’m not surprised but he isn’t even attempting to hide it at all.

        • He’s never hidden any of it. Listened to a podcast today where George Conway was the guy being interviewed and he talked about something that makes sense to me. I’ve seen Trump for the racist sociopath con man he is from the beginning but George made an interesting point.

He said, he believes that people just can’t accept that Trump is as shitty of a human because it is impossible for most humans to imagine anyone could be so uncaring about other humans and have no concept of truth beyond what is “good for him”

He figured it out quickly after accepting the job within the administration and quit before he officially took the job because of it.

          • 2
            2

I can see that. Disbelief and thinking he is doing stuff in your interest is pretty powerful. Lots of rumors going around that some of the GOP senators are being black mailed now. Wishful thinking or reality?

          • Probably reality in some cases (He has something on Lyndsey Graham for sure) but wishful thinking with most I am betting.

          • I think Graham is just a political opportunist. He pretended he was above the political fray and an upstanding guy when that suited him and has gone MAGA to keep power. He is A+ at recognizing the political winds, and that makes him a shitty human.

          • Agree he is a shitty human but I still believe the stories about him hiring male escorts. Everyone knows Graham is gay, worst kept secret in DC. What is hilarious is he appears to be letting himself be blackmailed over something people a) already know and b) don’t give a shit about.

    • Injury concerns and no recent performance sampling probably bit him. Teams are playing it much safer with only five rounds.

    • 2
      2

      Must not be completely healed.

A lot of guys were sending in video of their bullpen sessions to help teams see them. If Abel was healthy, he could have thrown a bullpen on tape.

      • It was such an odd draft it could be due to an abundance of factors.

MLB and MLBPA really should be ashamed for this over roughly a million dollars per team to extend the draft to 10 rounds which would still have been bad for the undrafted guys.

  32. 3

I see Governor Brown has put the state of Oregon’s reopening plans on a 7 day moratorium. No progression of any phase for any county for at least 7 days because we have f’d up and allowed an increase in cases and hospitalizations after the significant progress that was made during March/April/May.
We’ve been grounded. Hope everybody uses that 7 days to think long and hard about what they have done.

    Awesome.

    • This just seems like political stage craft for most places. Anywhere that is in phase 1 or beyond is already normalizing to going out and ‘getting back to life’. People are not going to go back into isolation and there won’t be much they can do except physically send police to shut down locations and issue fines. It may have an affect in Portland where things are still in isolation but in places like Bend its going to be a pointless gesture without serious enforcement.

Its in everyones hands to be safe, mask and distance but it seems many people who are going out don’t care to face reality. They will when it becomes real for them but until then the virus will do what it does while people have other concerns.

      • 4
        2

Over 400,000 people in the US die from smoking every year. Everybody knows smoking kills, but people keep smoking. People don’t give a f’ck about Corona Virus. If they ignore it then they can live normal and be happy…until they die. It’s the American way.

        • Yeah I have been saying for months that many people will not take it seriously until it personally affects them. There are people who have taken it seriously from the start though.

        • 3
          1

Smoke until YOU die, however, that doesn’t give you the right to spread your CV on me because you can’t be inconvenienced by wearing a mask.

          • I’m really aware of bad germ containment being immune-compromised. Covid has actually improved things for me quite a bit. Flu season usually has me in fight or flight watching people cough all over and wipe their booger hands on anything they can find.

          • I can tell you’re in Bend because your reference to people returning to normal. It got me thinking while I was out a few hours ago: a lot of the anxiety around reopening seems resolved by doing it outside. Eat outside. Have a beer outside. Meet people in the park outside. It’s also backed scientifically. Now forward time over the next few weeks. Shit back east gets humid and juicy so everyone heads inside. West coast folks are high and dry – just stand in the shade if you’re too hot. Result is west coast maintains lower numbers while AC hounds in the Southeast head inside, but continue their current level of socialization and social contact. (except maybe AZ since it’s a hundred and fucking twenty there all summer)

          • Totally, I think the big danger in Bend is people get used to not masking and distancing outside and then stop being careful in stores. Idk about you but I’m only seeing 10% masking in places like homedepot/lowes, safeway, target. Costco and whole foods are still doing alright. Social distancing has pretty much gone out the window in stores. They wait in line on the dots but as you walk through the store its just normal lack of awareness. The OSU study found zero active cases in bend so maybe were in good shape but with how much tourism and campers we are already getting im worried.

    • one reason for the jump is testing. Were testing twice as many people now as we were before the first phase started. And they are getting better at contact tracing. Still there was an increase in hospitalizations, but that could be from the 2 big outbreaks that happened.

      • Imagine trying to contact trace somebody from this group.
“Hello, I’m calling from Multnomah County Health Services. How many people have you shared recent contact with?
I’m sorry, did you say 10? Or 10 THOUSAND?
        *hangs up phone*
And that’s a big zero for this case. My work is done here”

        https://youtu.be/KHnQEkCSTwg

      • I think that’s wishful thinking. Infection rate depends on interaction number and probability. Interactions have gone up and people are masking and distancing less. More interactions higher probability of infection = more infections. The data I have found doesn’t show a great correlation between tests and positives either. When we were on a decline from 38,000 a day to 17,000 the number of tests per day increased dramatically. The positive rate today is higher than two weeks ago.

        https://covidtracking.com/data/us-daily

    • There’s been vaccine news literally every day. The difference is how hard the media chooses to push it and how they frame it.

        • I haven’t seen anything major. The dip-buying seems to be fading now that the “market” has had time to digest the Hertz share offering news.

It’s going to be really darkly funny (and incredibly American) if the stimulus measures end up not working because people gambled all that money on really bad, debt-laden stocks.

          • Haha, yep. I’m sure it was spent on TVs that wind up in landfills and the worst stocks possible…that wind up in financial landfills…that the FED buys…and sends the price to infinity! Now that’s American.

          • And just like that, everything’s red today. No vaccine push, no “good” economic data, no profit.

It’s bothering me that PM’s are starting to couple with broader indices. I had hoped the speculative buyers had been shaken out the last month or so, but there still seems to be a healthy amount.

Yep this will be our first and will be having a son, due August/September. Wouldn’t honestly have chosen to be pregnant right now with all things considered, but we are beyond excited to welcome our first.

Hey congrats! We had our third in April so I get the apprehension. Best advice I got is drop all expectations to healthy mom and healthy baby in your birth plan! That and Doulas are worth every cent haha

          • So the current plan is to have two kiddos, a boy and a girl ideally. We shall see if that comes to fruition as my wife has been a bit shocked at what pregnancy really entails.

          • Imagine your partner taken over by an alien that makes her insane for 9 months (if you are lucky). Yeah it does plenty physically but that’s far from the most important concern. Mental health, relationship stability, communication, patients and we’ll…basically everything is tested in the extreme.

          • @angry I gotta echo what nuke said. The mental aspect of it right now is the toughest part due to all of the physical changes. I do have to say that with everything going on with the pandemic really has made this a lot worse and it certainly doesn’t help that my wife is a nurse.

Every little tickle or physical abnormality is a sign of the virus to her and I’m having to talk her off the ledge daily it seems like. We have been sheltering in place since it got real bad and haven’t ventured out at all. Most likely won’t until this is all over. She feels like we have been robbed of a joyous time in our lives and we haven’t been able to “feel” pregnant.

          • Good luck, buddy. I have a theory that people can’t stay in a heightened phase for long. My guess is this passes in a few months.

          • @Wrigg – If she doesn’t have a relationship with a therapist its a good idea to do so before the baby shows up. The hormone shifts are nuts and post-partum is very real. Having a safety net and relationship already formed before that shows up is really really helpful later because the conversation is already started. My wife and I have both benefited greatly from good therapists.

In case you are not aware of how therapy and mental health works you really want to find a therapist or counselor not a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication and are far more expensive than a certified counselor. therapist/counselors usually have a relationship with a psychiatrist who they can send a patient to if they think medication screenings should be considered.

    • Good to see Jaydon Grant is training with him. I am hoping we see a notably improved Grant this season at CB.

Is Grant the one the secondary coach has said has the best (only) proper mindset for a DB at this point?

  33. Because this is a general thread, curious to hear how alcohol consumption is going for everyone? Several weeks ago, several mentioned it had increased after the stay-at-home order. I took a break for a week with no alcohol, then reduced consumption.

    How is it going?

    • I have been cutting down to 3 or 4 per week. For a while I was at 6, and it was very disturbing because I began to actually crave a drink.
Weather plays a large roll in drinking for me. When it’s cold out, I want whiskey based drinks or something with Baileys. When it’s warm I want fancy cocktails, sit on the patio, etc. I’ve been trying to ignore the weather, or instead of drinking on a nice day, do something else that it triggers, like throw the ball around, etc.

    • We totally cut it out. Exercise and watching comedy take the edge off without the negative side effects.

Good for the body and the budget.

      • I’ve diversified and increased exercise as well, getting to the point I actually enjoy it again. At first, some is a struggle, then as conditioning improves, I look forward to it.

    • Beer consumption for me is down, but liquor consumption is up. Fortunately having a regular work schedule keeps me in check on week nights.

    • I am down to zero alcohol consumption since the gyms opened back up. Taking at least 1 full month off so another week to go.

  34. Just saw that Hamilcar is a Walter Camp First Team Preseason All-American, nice recognition for him and the program.

Has anyone seen NOS4A2? Season 2 starts soon. I got Season 1 on ePay recently and just finished watching it. Interesting take on a vampire story. I’ll watch at least a few episodes this season (unless it interferes with Yellowstone). Getting the full season on disk is the way to go IMO, so you don’t have to wait a week for the next episode.

    • Read the book by Joe Hill and it was really well done. I had no idea there was a show and the cast looks fantastic. For those who don’t know Joe Hill is Stephen King’s son and he is becoming pretty prolific. Lots of movie and show spin offs now, personally his work speaks to me more than his Dads.

Thanks for the heads up CJ

    • Yeah its just convenient binning for low attention spans. The lowest case day we have had since the April 4th peak (4th highest day so far) is 18681 daily cases. Outside of Brazil I don’t think any country has reported a day that high besides us…so our lowest day is catastrophic news in almost any other country in the world that is reporting decently.

The main difference now is that its spread across far more states. In March/April/May the vast majority of cases were coming out of New York and New Jersey. Yesterday New York was #10 for daily cases and New Jersey was #13. California, Texas, Florida, Arizona and North Carolina have all seen significant upswings. Arizona is expected to have a big upswing in deaths as Phoenix is running out of beds and resources.

      • To be fair though, if we’re comparing to other countries, anything that’s not per capita is a pretty poor metric. We are by far the most populous developed country in the world (and I’m making the assumption that development level roughly correlates to testing quality). In deaths per capita, we’re about the middle of the pack when compared to European countries, and roughly 60% of the bad ones (UK, Spain, Italy, Belgium, etc).

        • I mean sure. It doesn’t really change anything though. The virus is prevalent, infection rate is once again rising and this is not a second wave it’s just a continuation.

No matter what metric you look at the US has not handled Covid well and behavior has not changed significantly enough to bring a different result anytime soon.

    • I agree with that premise. There is so much pent up anger and frustration that something was going to happen. By and large America just experienced it’s first significant loss of freedom, quality of life and safety in generations. We are not accustomed to being told what to do, inconvenience or real risk of death for behavior.

It could have boiled into anything, women’s rights, haircuts, police brutality, trump sucks marches, ending racism, government over reach, inequality (March on wall street #2) ect ect ect…it’s a powder keg with no outlets. I sure hope that this outlet is worth it because it’s going to accelerate the timeline for thousands of peoples early demise.

It’s actually a good arguement to bring back as many distractions as possible. Sports, religion, parties, clubs, live shows, trips, get togethers, getting outside are all forms of distraction and release for the masses. Ofc those activities will kill people to so who knows what the real answer is. Personally I would take societal growth over live shows and sports but it’s all painful to watch.

Good Cliff Notes, Nuke. And thanks to helmsley for posting.
There is also this nugget which some will find “inconvenient”, or uncomfortable:

“Following the contentious Michael Brown killing in Ferguson, Missouri, an award-winning black economics professor at Harvard and several student researchers spent more than 3,000 hours rigorously analysing 1,332 lethal police shootings in ten major American cities between 2000 and 2015. They found no pattern of racial bias. Professor Roland G. Fryer told the New York Times (which published the counter-intuitive conclusions ‘below the fold’, as we said in the olden days of newsprint): ‘It is the most surprising result of my career.’

“below the fold”……..and some will actually be surprised at that!

          • 2
            1

Just checked Google scholar and there are loads of papers on it. Conclusions are all over the place depending on the data sets, assumptions and analysis. There are conclusions in academia that are pretty universal.

            1) Wealth is tied to treatment and outcomes in the justice system from initial arrest to final outcome (court, prison release or death).

            2) Police killings per capita have been on the rise since the early 90s (could be partially reporting/transperancy improvement).

            3) The US has the highest rate of per capita killings of any first world country at around 46 per 10 million. Next worst is Luxembourg at 17 and then Canada at 10. After that they are all 4 or less. For perspective Iraq is just below the US at 45.

            4) 99% of police in the US are never charged, there is essentially zero accountability.

          • End qualified immunity and I’m betting things change. And I’m not talking about just the police, judges, DA, senators, congress people. All of them.

          • Isn’t the fear of reprecussions a basic tenent of crime and punishment? Justice system makes that arguement all the time but then makes rules to disqualify themselves from the same logic. Law should be equally applied.

          • Nuke,
Did Google scholar have much to say about the DOJ Report on the Shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson? You know, the Eric Holder led DOJ which concluded that the account of the officer involved was “corroborated by physical evidence” and “by eyewitnesses”. The report that concluded, “this matter lacks prosecutive merit and should be closed. ”

Just one of the “99%” never charged.
Zero accountability? 86 pages from Eric Holder’s DOJ doesn’t seem so.

          • Actually yeah it was used quite a bit as a beacon of proper investigation which makes sense since it was a hugely high profile case. There are about 1000 police killings every year. 5-10 get charged a year and almost none are ever found guilty or cases get dismissed. 0 accountability was definitely a poor choice of words. There are plenty of jurisdictions that do good reports and investigations but there are also plenty that sweep stuff under the rug and report falsely to protect other officers. There are justified killings and murder but either way the shear number is absurd. US police should not be competing with Iraq security forces on per capita killings. Our officers shouldn’t kill citizens at a rate more than 4 times higher than Canada. Like most things in the US people are simplfying everything into a bianary issue where all protesters are despicable rioters and all cops are murderers and brutalizers. The fact is there is good cops, bad cops, peaceful protesters and total jackass looters. There is also decades of heavy handed millitarized policing in the US that has led to anger and a wish for change from the majority of the population of the US. How we do policing does need to change. Systematic inequality and disparities do need to be sanded out to even the playing field for all so we all can prosper.

          • Nuke, 1000 killings but how many are 1. Armed with any type of weapon. 2. Attacking an officer just physically or trying to disarm them. 3. Unarmed? There’s a big difference between what happened to Mr Floyd and an a perpetrator shooting at cops and getting killed.

          • I agree with that, Nuke. I’ve always suspected that “race” issues are often conflated with socioeconomic issues. Not that race isn’t a factor, but stats looking at race only ignore the significant impact of wealth/poverty.

Agree that US policing in general is the bigger issue.

          • “2) Police killings per capita have been on the rise since the early 90s (could be partially reporting/transperancy improvement).”

            Regarding your comment on reporting/transparency.
Wonder how much of this is due to higher levels of video surveillance.? Security cameras became more prevalant in the 90’s, cell phone cameras came a little later. Body cams too. Now video is pretty much everywhere, except Jeffrey Epstein’s prison cell. Some of these cases may have come off as”suicide in police custody” if not caught on tape.

          • It’s a really good question NB. My own Opinion is that video is a vessel for change. I don’t think video itself does a ton but when bad actions are caught and distributed it changes procedures, training, norms and whatever else within an institution. True of bussinesses, governments, religious institutions, sports, healthcare, educatiion. It can be darker too, Rocco made a bad decision as a 15 year old and lost a big opportunity and is stained for who knows how long. Video replay had changed sports forever but also makes games so long and annoying!

Specifically to policing I think part of the patchwork of rules and culture we see is due to this. Departments who have high profile issues have had big responses. Weirdly some of the past offenders seem to have just closed ranks more and gotten worse. Some places really improve and embrace change when stuff is brought to light. It’s a process.

I had very long hair in my late teen’s/early 20’s and lived in a smaller community, but not tiny. Once a week I had to walk home from my job after midnight because I could not afford a car. I got stopped three times over a 2-3 month period by different officers asking for ID. I was too scared to protest and I felt like one smartass move or comment and I would be in the back of a squad car. Luckily my mom’s friend owned a laundromat that had the police uniform contract. My Mom told her about it and she told the captain to leave me the fuck alone because I was a good kid. It stopped like that and I had the job for two more years. I know it’s not comparable to systemic racism, but it was a helpless feeling at the time and gave me a small glimpse of abuse of power.

          • ‘fear of repercussions’ I haven’t read any of the numbers but, personally, I have severe claustrophobia. A prison cell = my fear of repercussion.

I literally broke up with my girlfriend because I refused to bring a kid into this world. Right after the pandemic started. This isn’t even that bad yet hopefully people are learning from it. Things are going to keep getting progressively worse. The planet is dying and trump will probably get another term. Some climate expert came and talked to my work and said by 2030 half of Maui’s beaches will be gone.

    • Houston cases are about to blow up, but let’s not think that Texas is any reflection of the rest of the county (except maybe Arkansas)

Since this is an anything goes thread I thought I would visit some old business.

The number of cases of the virus are far, far, far less significant in a clinical sense than hospitalizations. For all of March and April all we heard was “more testing, more testing, more testing.” What do you suppose more testing amidst a viral outbreak is going to show? You got it, more cases. Of course, if we all became hermits for 12 months or more we could minimize the increase in cases, but as I argued quite some time ago, that’s like holding your head under water until the danger has passed. Not a solution.

In one of the states that is supposedly spiking, Florida, confirmed cases are indeed piling up, mathematically, but the rate of case increase was 20% higher the last two weeks of April.

Hospitalization rates are pretty even nationwide, which shows that, as rule, (up here, down there, you know the story) folks are beginning to adapt to this stupid disease. I have coffee with friends a few times a week, but it’s always outside, like a tailgate party and we keep our distance. My voice is hoarse but it’s a small price to pay for a little socialization.

So, let’s stay vigilant and healthy. I will look forward to talking to you all on the occasion of Smith’s next fourth down call.

    Still miss BeaverGopher.

Laughing at loud at all these duck dorks thinking they’re team will do well because of recruiting, how has that worked out for UCLA for the past 60 years, tell me that?

Most of these highly rated recruits are complete flops at the college level. I’ve seen it a thousand times but since no duck fans have actually been fans for more than 5 years they have no perspective whatsoever.

The best way to build a team is how we have always done it. Turn over as many rocks as it takes, sign the ones who fit and tell them to get their lunch box and head to the weight room! I don’t think any of these so called experts have any idea just what coach Smith is cooking up!

    • Um, what happens if they do well? Do you give the credit to coaching? Most likely the only reason they do well is because of recruiting, so I wouldn’t LOL at that. I agree that JS is doing it right. I prefer what he’s doing over just recruiting a bunch of high star players just because they’re high star players.

      • Smith seems to pull in more game ready players and recruits to a plan much better. Riley and Anderson always seemed to be a bit confused on what body types they actually wanted at positions. Well Anderson just seemed confused in general.

Better players, better coaching, better results.

        • Idk if I would say riley didn’t know what body types he wanted. He seemed to have similar body types at every position for the most part. Andersen recruited the long tall LBs but then chose to play Whetzel over Rashed. So definitely agree he was confused.

          • Under Riley – I haven’t looked to verify but to my memory both lines tended to have weights all over the place and corners were pretty inconsistent in height. Those are probably the 3 hardest positions to recruit so it may just be that he couldn’t land what he wanted and took what he could get.

          • I wouldn’t call banker a retard by any means. He had some of the best defenses in OSU history. One or 2 years they were number 1 against the run in the nation. I think everyone holds a grudge because chip Kelly came in with a new offense that swept college football by storm. Banker wasn’t able to adjust and the game passed him by just like riley. It’s not necessarily his fault that he was given a lifetime contract.

  38. So I’m usually on board with coach Smith and he seems to be working on in state talent. Can anyone explain why they didn’t extend an offer to Patrick Hisitake from Westview? He has 20 offers that include many power 5 schools. Neither beavs or quacks offered him though. Maybe he ticked off the home state schools? He just released his top 8.

    • He had an unofficial during the Utah game and Legi was his recruiter. No idea why we didn’t extend a scholie, maybe he wrote us off early? He was also 6’5 200ish when he visited so maybe we didn’t want a project? The lowest rated OLB we offered was Mascrenas and he’s a 4 star. It’s definitely not a position of need so maybe the staff didn’t want to use a scholie on a project? Could be a mix of all sorts of things. I’m just guessing.

      NB?

      • I’ve asked on a couple occasions why we what was up with his recruitment, but nobody ever replied.
I took the silence to mean there was no interest from either side.
Could just be the Beavs were all in on Mascarenas, despite Hisitake being initially interested in OSU, and that didn’t go over well. Like you said Nuk, not a huge area of need, so they probably happy going went with Mascarenas and then focusing on other positions. Too bad one of the better in state athletes doesn’t fit the team.

Pat Casey is a legendary coach, no debate about that… I could care less about his “warts”… My questions to you would be: was there a coach out there, that was perfect? and if there was, please name the coach that you would have taken over Casey in the same time span

      • Easy answer, Chuck. No “coach out there that was perfect”.
Coaches, cops, and those who comment on these boards all come from the human race; some good and some bad but none PERFECT. You might say we all have warts……..only the sizes vary.

Gotta admit though, takes a lot of lookin’ to find warts on John Wooden.

        • I guess I took your comment as criticism… Anyways my point being that some folks always openly criticized Casey and he literally was the best coach in the entire NCAA… They can’t name any coach that was better because there wasn’t one…. Casey is a sure fire hall of famer

In my quest to provide unorthodox interpretations about how to cope with the pandemic, I came upon some statistics that simultaneously support one of Angry’s foundational arguments that informed the early days of this blog, or, at least, the years when I first became familiar with it. Before the famous “Is Mike Riley Depressed?” post (still probably the most insightful explanation for how Riley went from a good coach to ordinary at best), and more recently, the Luke Heimlich revisionist argument that correctly posited his standing as a justice-involved youth and not the criminal The Oregonian and too many high level administrators at OSU made him out to be, was Angry’s long standing riff about the superannuated OSU fan base that insisted that no (presumably more youthful and energetic fans) stand up in front of them during the course of a football game.

So, with that prologue, consider the following in light of the pressing question as to whether fans will be allowed to attend football games this fall, or some fraction of the possible attendance in order to maintain social distancing; estimated by some to on the order of 1/7 of total capacity:

80% of Americans who have died from Covid-19 are older than 65. If you are under 65, your chances of dying from Covid is about the same as getting killed in a car wreck.

More particularly, people over 85 are about 2.75 times more likely to die from Covid than those 75-84, 7 times more likely than those 65-74, and almost 17 times more likely than those 55-64. The ratios are even more steep for even younger cohorts, until you reach children under 14 who range from as low as 6.8 to 17 times LESS likely to die from Covid than seasonal flu.

This suggests, then, that rather than allocating the limited number of fans who will be allowed in Reser on the basis on donor points, it should be age. No one over 65. According to this formula, there will be fewer cranky old people in the stands complaining about those youngsters standing and cheering as Coach Smith determines upon whether to go for it on 4th down or not.

For the uninitiated, the foregoing is SATIRE, though the underlying statistics can be found in this weekend’s Wall Street Journal. The following stats provide further context on how we should be addressing this pandemic going forward. In March, Americans over 75 constituted about 50% of all deaths. Currently, that same cohort accounts for 2/3 of all deaths. Those younger than 45 less than 2%. In the UK, 95% who have expired have at least one underlying co-mordibity. In Italy the rate was 96%, with 60% of the deaths having 3 or more underlying conditions.

It is now clear, in retrospect, that late last winter this nation should have thrown all its resources into the quarantine and care of these super vulnerable populations. (Which includes, yours truly.) Nursing homes alone account for more than half the Covid deaths in more than 30 states. At the same time, the worst mistake was closing elementary schools, if not middle and high schools as well. There was little risk of significant outbreak there.

Having gone this far, I can’t close without offering a perspective on the politics of this. The lock-downs were not only aimed in the wrong direction they lasted too long. As Peggy Noonan noted in the same issue of the WSJ, the governors who took the most stern measures in the wake of the CDC’s and Trump’s bungling in February, “got carried away. They received too much adulation, enjoyed the role of savior too much . . . . Told we were grateful someone was taking responsibility, they became micromanagers of human life. Briefings became self-aggrandizing and Castroesque in length.”

Going forward, per Noonan, “There will be exactly zero appetite this fall for daily news conferences in which governors announce the phased, Stage 2 openings of certain sectors that meet certain metrics that some mid-level health department guy seems to have pulled out of his ear.”

    • How old is BeavGopher?
I have gotten no response from him…
Definitely concerning since we’ve had talks via email in the past.

      • Early 50’s, I’d say. He does travel a lot, so that’s what I’m counting on as a benign explanation. Nonetheless concerning, as you say.

      • I just looked back through a few threads looking for any of his posts. Lots of Jack posts, but no BG. I could have sworn he posted recently. Hope he’s OK.

    • He posted, even when travelling, and most of his travels seemed to be sports-related. As I recall, his wife died a while ago. (aarrgh, I hope that isn’t a mix-up) – best case; he has a lovely lady in his life who is taking up his angrybeav time.

    • ‘was Angry’s long standing riff about the superannuated OSU fan base that insisted that no (presumably more youthful and energetic fans) stand up in front of them during the course of a football game.’ The funniest (?) part of the riff = how these same fans would go to Riley’s post-game – not sure they were press conferences – maybe an alumni/booster group – and clap – even after things like the Eastern Washington loss – altho Eastern had a really good team, Riley was quoted as saying he ‘hadn’t known much about their quarterback.’

    • Working in senior housing, many of our “COVID” deaths have been on hospice with co-morbidities prior to testing positive for COVID.

Seasonally Deaths were higher in April/May, but not crazy high. Monthly Death totals were equally to a moderate to slightly elevated FLU season month (dec-feb). Q1 we normally see higher Death due to the flu Q2 deaths normally decline but this year they have remained higher.

        • I work for one of the largest owners of senior housing real estate. We own communities across the country.

It is true some areas have been harder hit than others but we have enough scale that we’ve been able to get enough PPE for our communities and ship to the hot spots, so our experience maybe better than the mom and pop shops.

    • My only question related to the post is what are the statistics with folks younger than 75 passing Covid on to folks older than 75? I really don’t know this answer but I’ve heard this as the main argument for kids returning full time to schools in the fall. I’d say If I have my grandparents living with me then I could pass it on them after being around kids at school or in this case, a football game.
I’ve heard kids aren’t passing Covid on to adults but I’d be curious about statistics.

Good post and thanks for including stats. In Oregon, the cases are jumping because of two places and one being an assisted living facility in Canby. Lots of staff have Covid there as well so it’s not just the residents.

My frustration right now is not knowing what is open and where. What county is in which phase and which businesses are fully open and which aren’t. This is hurting some business such as restaurants where google shows they are open for takeout only when really they are accepting dine in customers. Any business owners out there with perspective?

      • The frustration is very real. We have some friends from our kid’s school where the family owns a restaurant in SE PDX. They were prepared to open this Friday as Phase 1 was expected to be staryed for Multnomah county. They hired back a bunch of their staff and bought extra food to prepare for the influx of business, and literally a few hours before the reopening was supposed to happen, they were hit with the unexpected 7 day statewide moratorium. So all of the employees sit for another week with no work.
        Such a mess

      • Its a bit muddy for death statistics based on age. Some countries and states don’t report things like death by blood clot/stroke as covid related. My friends wife in her 20s died of that which would be exceptionally rare for a healthy person of her age. The CDC does keep statistics by age group that you can find on this link.

        https://data.cdc.gov/NCHS/Provisional-COVID-19-Death-Counts-by-Sex-Age-and-S/9bhg-hcku

The CDC also has different rules on reporting and paperwork for death than various states which is why the death count is about 20,000 lower than conglomerate sources that like world meter. The simple answer is until you hit 40 or so you are pretty safe. Over 55 the statistics get more nasty.

      • Times are tough and confusing for sure as a business owner, (alcohol/food). Customers are mad because we aren’t fully open for phase 2, but we still have to maintain 6ft, which is something most restaurant owners didn’t think of when designing their floor plan.

        • Bathrooms, Bathrooms, Bathrooms. In Restaurants and event venues the bathrooms are an absolute nightmare for being safe. They are choke points, always designed to be as space efficient as possible and usually are down a one way path. Flushing toliets also can be a huge spreader of aerosol-ed droplets in the air. On commercial buildings I am already seeing design change and requests come in to make it easier to social distance. The real money as a designer is if you can figure out how to make a space convertible so when times are virus free we can use that space to generate income. I just recently started looking at how UV could be utilized in spaces that have no real option for a structural change. Even if you could get high air circulation through some UV filters it would be a big improvement.

      • This past weekend we drove up into this little mountain town near Estes Park. Totally unnewsworthy except it was our first time dining in a restaurant since January. We ate outside. The protocol as wear a mask except at the table, and sit six feet apart (they had it sectioned off). It went fine, and everyone there adapted to it perfectly. Felt good to support the small business while getting our fix for socializing/dining. Overall it sucks, but if we can at least get to something like that I think society would calm down a bit and business owners could get by until this all settles. Hopefully.

    • As far as I know the lock-downs were never a means of shutting down the virus but were only a way to buy time for us to put together a plan for triage, contact tracing, etc. I’m not sure I’ve seen evidence of a plan… I’m hoping they exist. I’m leery of any kind of “it’s not that bad” type of argument because one only need look at some other countries or locales around the world that didn’t take it seriously. As someone pushing 60 who takes care a 96 year old mother, whose wife takes care of her own 90+ year old mother I am probably more sensitive to this matter than most. I’m also acutely aware of the economic impact as I have family with small businesses. As far as schools go, during the 1918 pandemic, the communities that suffered the least were the ones that close schools the earliest. So, I think it was the right choice given that we didn’t know a whole lot at the time and still don’t know enough.
It’s a difficult situation all the way around.

  41. Regarding BeavGopher, did he retire recently?
That’s what Google is telling me. Maybe he’s traveling the world (on his yacht?)

      • Haha.
Still down 650 points, but expect those stories to trickle in all day, and Kudlow/Mnuchen will be out talking about a booming Q3 and Q4, too.

        • Mnuchin already came out on Thursday or Friday of last week talking about how the next $1-2T stimulus was coming soon.

It’s absolutely insane that we’re throwing around TRILLIONS like this.

I won’t be getting any vaccine they come up with. The standards for drug approval are so low that the majority of new drugs don’t actually work more than a placebo. How are they going to rush development of a vaccine (something that normally takes several years) and ensure that it’s both safe and effective? The burden of proof is on the developer of the vaccine to show that injecting their product into people’s bodies won’t cause some kind of harm over the long-term.

        • 1
          1

          Me neither.

I’ve never had a flu shot or any vaccine in my life and doing just fine without them. No way I’m starting with a rushed corona vaccine. I’m not an anti-vaxer or anything, but I’m skeptical of most medicine. Maybe when I’m in my 70s I’d get it, and maybe by then it’s more refined and actually does something.

          • I believe I had tetanus. Is that the one for rusty nails, or is that the one they won’t let you into school without? I remember something like that…forgot about those! I guess my parents forced those on me, but I’ve never had any voluntary ones, and they’re the only I remember.

I’m not against them really; I just have never seen the need because I don’t trust medicine and my health was always solid. Never missed a day of school through 9 years of grade school. In high school I began to miss some, but that was more due to realizing I could and wanting the breaks. At this point the vaccine has to prove it can do something for me that my body can’t. e.g. If I got into the high age bracket for Corona I’d probably take it.

          • Schools have been requiring mmr, polio and hepatitis series or an exemption. Exemption requirements have changed by state and over time.

          • I definitely don’t remember getting polio. I’ll have to ask my mom. I did get whatever the schools required, and I think I had to get something to travel to Europe, too. So I do have a few. But since I became an adult and began making my own decisions, I haven’t had any. I forgot about those ones as a kid, so my initial comment is incorrect, but I was thinking more as an adult.

          • I never got a flu shot until I had kids and the flu ripped through our house because one of the kids brought it home from somewhere. When you have a family and everyone gets sick, it’s difficult to deal with everyone being out of action for any prolonged period of time. When you have a kid under 2 or your wife is pregnant the risk of complications is higher.

We did a lot of research on the different flu shots and found that even though they aren’t perfect, they do improve your chances of staying healthy by something like 40%. That’s after a long history of trial and improvement of a vaccine for an illness that is well-understood.

With the coronavirus, neither the disease nor the (hypothetical) vaccine is well-understood. There are people that are at high risk that would probably benefit from a vaccine, even with relatively unknown efficacy. Many people would not, and I hope no one forces them to get the vaccine.

          • Fun fact about tetanus: it doesn’t really have anything to do with rusty nails. It’s a nasty bacteria that produces toxic spores when it’s starved of oxygen. The only time those spores can get in your bloodstream is if you’re exposed to the bacteria somewhere where there’s little/no oxygen present like really deep wounds (such as those from long nails).

          • Thats exactly the boat I am in DE. The chances a vaccine hurts me is pretty low and if it gives me really any protection at all its worth it. Having a barely functional immune system and a constantly stressed body is not a recipe for success with any virus. Covid has barely changed my life style except its made my hyper awareness year round instead of seasonal with Flu. My worst nightmare is a MERSA infection cause I basically have no way to fight half the strains.

          • Beav in DE:
Another fun fact, “Tetanus bacteria live in soil, dust and manure, particularly horse manure.

The reference to horse manure makes me wonder if our old buddy Jack may have succumbed to Tetanus. Just a thought.

        • I will probably wait a little, depending on the situation. But, I’m all caught up, get boosters when necessary and get a flu shot every year. My wife and kids too.

          • I’ll definitely get it aslong as its not an active vaccine. I can’t take active vaccines for to the meds I take. Preference would be they everyone takes an anti body test prior to vaccinating.

          • ‘when it’s starved of oxygen.’ Yes, ‘Clostridium tetani’ is a spore-forming, anaerobic bacteria. The spores don’t cause the infection – they are everywhere – once, however, a spore enters an ideal condition, the bacteria hatches (as it were) producing the neuro-toxin(s) that cause tetanus. Fascinating.

        • Would be nice to know first:
          A. Do I already have antigens in my blood stream from a prior infection?
          B. What is the duration of protection from re-infection if A is True.

I’d imagine the initial wave of vaccines will be reserved for high risk populations, and the people who are willing/able to pay a premium. After that it will become more available for the rest of the population. I don’t fall into either category so I don’t anticipate having to make this decision any time soon, at which point there should be quite a bit more analysis completed on the effectiveness of the vaccine.

What do you guys think of Smith’s handling of that racist situation in terms of admonishing the ghost of Dee Andros (touching on the prior thread)? I saw Avery Roberts tweeted “This is how you lead”…looks like he got respect from players (both black and white) for the decision, which is obvious, but I wonder how that carries out into recruiting and reduces other coaches’ ability to use “OSU is a backwoods, racist school” on the recruiting trail. Might make some difference at the margin, and if you land one or two game changers because of a perception change, than that racist dude just became an asset via his departure, which is pretty interesting.

    • It will be hard to say if it will have a positive impact, but it definitely helped to minimize the negative impact.
Had Carley been allowed to stay on the team after his text apology, the team would have come unglued.

But I don’t know that incoming recruits will even be aware of Smith taking swift action. I’m guessing more likely they’ll only have heard the story of Carley saying that stuff and just assume he was dealt with somehow.

    • He made the best move on the situation, no doubt about that. He also didn’t screw around with it and drag it out before coming to a decision. Idk about recruiting but I saw atleast 10 players chime in positively on Twitter. Saw maybe 5 former players.

I asked a black friend about it who has a 7 and 9 year old sons and he said that it would matter to black famlies. His point was he cares far more about the environment and influences in power positions that his sons would be exposed to during a really important part of their lives.

I’m fascinated by “at the margin” stuff. Happens a lot in economics, and it happens all the time in sports. Say you get 1 game changer because of this…if it’s the right player at the right position, that could be the difference between a Rose Bowl team and a 4 win team. Of course there is no way to know, but I think it neuters opposing coaches and anti-osu arguments they can make. It would be interesting if that nobody of a player who was kicked off the team winds up working to our advantage that much, too. Nuc’s comment suggests it’s going to matter at the margin…that’s what I suspected.

    • It was the right move. Even if it was low risk, we don’t have much invested in a second year walkon. Easy decision. Say this happened to a 3 year starter? The same decision should be made but I’m assuming it would have taken longer to get at that decision.

  43. Water is still wet, the sky is still blue, and now the Fed is buying individual bonds. Don’t worry, they’ll only buy “investment-grade” (non-junk, including those that will soon be junk once their customers stop getting government checks).

Oh, and this is really only bailing out the current holders of those bonds…which are institutional holders because retail investors and 401(k) holders are really unlikely to be buying individual bonds.

Oh, and this also means that in addition to controlling rates and prices of UST’s, the Fed is basically now controlling the market for corporate bonds. What could go wrong?

  44. Our first opponent, OK State has some issues to work out. A picture has surfaced online of Coach Gundy on a fishing trip, wearing an OAN Network branded t-shirt.
OAN is the ultra conservative network that seems to be Trumps preferred media partner, outside of FoxNews.

OkState RB Chuba Hubbard isnt happy and pledges to not have anything to do with Ok State “Until things CHANGE”
You may remember Howard running around, over and through the Oregon State defense like a hot knife through butter last year.

Unclear exactly what he means by the statement, but will he interesting to see the fallout if players are standing up against their own coach publicly, even if it’s over a simple t-shirt.

Kindof the oppisite effect of Smith booting Carley from the team, so seems topical to todays conversation.

    • It makes no sense why he didn’t declare for the 2020 draft. Either a booster gave him a ton of cash, he got really bad advice, or is just an idiot.

      • Don’t sell him short, could becall 3?

2,000+ yards, 20+ TDs as a junior, and returns to put on more miles and risk injury? Maybe he thinks they have a shot at playoffs?

      • And then you’ve got Hodgins…incredibly dumb for him to go out (and very costly for us). He really needed to develop his craft as much as possible, and 2019 was a historically deep NFL WR draft class.

Even just at OSU, IMO Hamilcar would have been a much better candidate to leave early. Though of course I’m very grateful he didn’t.

        • Only thing I can think of is Hodgins didn’t trust her he forced the ball as much as he was last season. I still think it made sense for him to go pro in some senses though.

          • Back in his recruitment days, I followed Hodgins pretty closely. He has set goals for himself back in highschool. One goal was to be a 3 and done player, ending up in the NFL.

So, maybe another year would have benefitted him, but I have to give him credit for seeing achieveing a major goal he set for himself.
We were lucky to have him at OSU. There were so many scenarios that could have caused him to go elsewhere. Dave Baldwin was the main reason he came here but GA demoted Baldwin shortly after Hodgins committed. Baldwin was a former coach for Hodgins dad and was the key to our relationship.

          • Thanks, NB, Baldwin has always been an interesting guy to me.
Liked the story of him taking his SJSU squad through the Stanford campus before a game.

          • There was some funny business with the old staff and some photos that found their way to the beavrecruiting feed that we quickly were asked to make disappear by a staff member. I won’t get into specifics, but I remember getting a call while I was out camping, by a member of the old staff who was very concerned, so I had to message Angry and ask him to delete some AB posts related to the topic. A sign of the loose ship GA ran.
It was quite a few years ago.

            https://youtu.be/Otm4RusESNU

          • Ha, yeah, there at least 3 separate occasions where I had to contact Angry and have him make some AB posts disappear. The 3 occasions I’m thinking of were all due to the old staff letting info get out they shouldn’t have, or doing something against the rules. I wish I could share but this stuff impacts more than just the old staff. Just better off letting these things die off. Plus I actually still chat with one of them who has been long gone from our program but is still a cool guy.

By the way, the new staff is nothing like the old. They’re much more by the books and are tight lipped.

I’ve casual friends with a guy who played WR for SJSU under Baldwin in the early ’90s and he can’t say enough good things about him for what it’s worth.

    • Meh, everyone involved has too much at stake to let this become such a big deal it impacts our game with them. Maybe if it happened the week before it would be different. Gundy will probably issue an apology, there will be noise in the media for a few days, and everything will die down.

That or Gundy resigns and they’re able to find someone else capable to fill the hole. That’s a program with a lot of money and a lot of talent. They’ll find someone.

Players seem to be turning on Gundy pretty quickly with current and former players backing Hubbard up.

Will be interesting to see the fallout.
Lots of comments from fans about Hubbard being thin-skinned, etc.
Good example of the lines a coach would be smart to stay away from. He could have avoided all this and just gone fishing with a plain t-shirt, but by wearing an OAN branded shirt, he was sending a message to anybody who saw him, especially given the events of the past few weeks.

      Not the best idea

I am not familiar with oan, but if athletes are going to go 24-7 outrage then I might give up sports other than the ones my kids participate in.

I follow sports for the enjoyment of the competition.

        • That’s freedom, free market and the first amendment. Athletes and coaches can make whatever statement they want but it doesn’t stop reprecussions. You definitely have every right to stop watching sports if they don’t serve their purpose, that’s just healthy behavior!

        • 3

A little background on OAN that is being included in stories about Gundy/Hubbard.

“OAN, or One America News, is a right-wing cable channel founded in 2013. The network has run into controversy in the past for airing alleged conspiracy theories and for its close ties to Russia and its state-run outlet Sputnik.
Gundy has previously praised the outlet. In April 2020, he called the network “refreshing,” and claimed “they just report the news.””

Also, OAN has pushed conspiracy theories of BLM being a terrorist organization.

          https://okcfox.com/sports/oklahoma-state-cowboys/gundys-shirts-sparks-outrage-from-ok-state-star-hubbard

Gundy is free to wear whatever shirt or support whatever network he wants, but I could understand why players might not be down with playing for him, which is their choice too.

He’s also the coach who was outspoken about getting college football back to playing again, and later issued an apology after saying in April

“In my opinion, we need to bring our players back. They are 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22-year-old and they are healthy and they have the ability to fight this virus off. If that is true, then we sequester them, and continue because we need to run money through the state of Oklahoma.”

He’s not exactly batting 1.000 this offseason. And I don’t think the OAN shirt is the sole reason Hubbard is complaining.

      • 7
        3

Just curious what message you think he was sending by wearing the shirt…. Is it not okay to be both a conservative and a head coach? What message would he have been sending had he worn a CNN shirt?

            3

MSNBC has been running non stop conspiracy for four years! Jeez let people be different. He should quit because we will have a better chance.

          13

OAN is NOT a news channel. Period.

And any comparison to MSNBC, CNN, or even Foxnews is bullshit.

OAN is make you feel better about being a shitty white supremacists TV, nothing else.

          • 7
            10

OAN literally has a news show where the anchors tag line is….

“Remember, even when I’m wrong, I’m right”

            That ain’t news.

Does sound like Trump’s dream for state TV though.

        • 3
          7

Just a dumb move for a guy who coaches a majority black team to promote a network that pushes conpiracy theories against the BLM movement, especially at this moment.
I don’t care what Gundy wears, but his players apparantly do.
Sometimes you gotta be able to read the room.

Even the university president has issued a statement. Dont think he’s enjoying the attention the school is getting from this, which could have easily been avoided.

          https://twitter.com/burnshargis/status/1272646557930831878?s=19

The more attention it gets, the better for Oregon State in game 1 too. I hope Gundy keeps wearing that shirt throughout the Summer

          • combined with the (paraphrased) comment “….these guys are 19, 20, 21…we need to get football going and get money flowing through the school again…” makes it easy to see how his comments could be received poorly.

        • 1
          2

If the players care about the coach’s views, then it matters. That’s the nature of the job. If Gundy can’t work within that constraint he can go be a TV analyst or HS coach.

        • 1
          1

Most head coaches are conservatives. But most don’t outwardly show it.

It is just a shirt but people can read it as a endorsement. Wearing a logo can say a lot.

A while back, Chris Dudley stopped by fall camp when he was running for governor. Riley took pics with him but did say it was not an endorsement. Today, it would be.

        • 3
          4

Hilarious that people associate OAN with conservatism. Says everything about where the republican party is today. A big thank you to Trump for revealing it.

          • 1
            6

Agreed, OAN is white nationalist news mixed with Putin propaganda.

It is basically voluntary brain washing.

No clue why conservatives want to own that but they do.

  46. Here’s a new take on CV-19. I want to return to Nicaragua for a time, so have been watching flights (finally a couple starting in July) and CV news.

President Ortega and wife insist there have been only a few deaths in Nica. Their henchmen (otherwise known as ministers) blatantly refused to follow preventive procedures. Some of those same ministers are now quite dead.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/08/nicaragua-coronavirus-sandinista-leaders-fall-victim

One of them issued a brutal crackdown during the 2018 uprising. The people in community, Masaya, celebrated saying,“Covid-19 delivered the justice that all my brothers who were murdered in 2018 never saw,” said one local.

      • I never actually watched all of game 2 before. When it was live I was out of town for work in Denver and had to follow it on twitter while out for dinner with coworkers. I basically only saw the highlights up until I watched it last night on youtube. That game should be an ESPN Classic. So much drama and so much solid play for both teams. A few bases loaded situations that both teams had to battle through against some great batters.
Amazing to look back at the offensive firepower our top of the order had, even with Kwan out due to injury. Murderers row. And the bottom of the order had some clutch hitters.
And the fielding was grest too. That final double play to end the game looked so pedestrian even though it was a really difficult play to make in time.

      • Not only did the life go out of Arkansas after the drop, but several Beavs players have since agreed that our side was convinced we’d win game 3. “you don’t give Beavs a second chance”……or something like that.

  47. GT up with two stories on the return to campus of SA’s; Barnes says “at least one” has tested positive.

“Dr. Doug Aukerman said as much as 25 to 35% of the college age group might not show any symptoms during a COVID-19 infection.”

“Director of Athletics Scott Barnes said Monday there are about 110 Beavers from a variety of sports on campus ready to get back to work as soon as Thursday after screenings for the COVID-19 virus.”

    https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/barnes-at-least-one-osu-athlete-has-tested-positive-for-covid-19/article_f8fc05e8-29dc-5075-a6ec-70b44a87d37e.html

      • Probably when we can’t field a team. They would probably remove and isolate anyone who tests positive or gets symptoms.

        • Good thing Corvallis is away from major population centers. Risk is low. Should be able to get all athletes to school without any major issues.

The big risk is playing vs other schools.

  48. Anybody here doing the backyard projected movie thing this summer?
Just ordered a projector but havent figured out what to do for the screen. Any recommendations?
Ideally it would be something i could set up and tear down fairly easily, rather than a fitted frame that has to be stored away when not in use. Thinking I want to go up to the 120″ diagnal size. Projector says it can go up to 200″, but that seems like overkill

    • I use an old stand up screen on a tripod from probably the 60’s, probably something like 60″ diagonal. I’ve seen people set up a sheet, which of course has its limitations. Probably a white sheet would work best if you go that route…hopefully no blue light hits it.

    • They have ones on amazon inflatable and foldable. You will get a much clearer picture than a sheet. I’ve been thinking about doing it. You definitely have to go big enough to make it worth it to leave the home theater.

      • Hadnt really thought about that angle…

The more I put into this project, the less it sounds like a good idea. The viewing windows are short, especially for kids because it doesnt get dark till pretty late. The main reason I’m doing it is to give them a chance to have friends over without having to be cooped up indoors. But outdoors comes with moths which could suck for movie watching.

I guess if there is a football season, i can use it to project a giant screen inside, but otherwise i could see this thing not getting a ton of use

      • I hadnt seen one like that yet. I like that it folds down to the size of a small tent bag. Wish i had a nice flat surface like a garage in my backyard to hang it on, to block wind. Just another hurdle to work around.

      • That was one of my concerns when considering this idea the wind factor. Also was wondering how much would be needed to spend on a projector to get good quality and clarity. I have a 65′ 4k so I would want a screen substantially bigger and decent quality to make it worth it. It would be fun to get the family and neighbors together for a bbq movie night tho. At least on paper.

        • Just from my very basic resesrch, the 4K native resolution projectors are still going to run you around $1000, give or take. It’s a decent investment for something you may only use on limited occasions.
1080P native projectors only run around $200 for some pretty good models. And many of them say they’ll display up to a 200″ picture.
The one I landed on was a Vankyo 610, for about $180 on amazon(although when I look today the price is now back up to $250?)

Some people here may have better info than me, I’ve only been casually researching this stuff for a few days.

I dont have a 4k monitor, so it wont feel like a loss in picture quality for me, but you may have a harder time going back down to 1080p

          • I could handle 1080 to be able to watch on 120″. Did you look into the lumens much? Sometimes the color and brightness seem to be off on projectors. My buddy would set his up for gaming sometimes but I didn’t really like it. Seems like the darks aren’t as dark or something. I don’t really know much tho if you can’t tell.

I can’t help but think there are some parallels between the last Dee Android post and what is going on with Gundy. I think Okie State could be dealing with years of fallout. In hindsight too I think passing on The Pirate was smart, just not worth the risk.

    • The pirate is such a wildcard. I’m not overly risk averse but that guy would give me a long pause before pulling the trigger hiring him.

    • Leach’s ceiling is obvious to everyone by now. We want a program that can compete for a championship, and JS still has the potential to be that guy. Leach doesn’t.

      • I would amend that to “Conference Championship,” because I think NC is too political. Conference championship is more empirical. I suspect Leach was close to a PAC championship one year at WSU, but don’t recall specifics.

I think Smith can get OSU to Conference Championship. I have gone w/a rose bowl prediction in 3-5 years. Not sure where the Rose Bowl will figure into playoff system in that timeframe.

        • Yeah, that’s what I meant. It’s basically impossible for us to make a NC at this point. College football is too far gone.

          • I think theoretically the beavers could make a playoff but it would take a rose bowl season followed by an undefeated season for that to happen. Really would need the back to back all time seasons to raise the hype and get the good preseason ranking.

          • 2
            1

No, an undefeated season would get OSU in the playoff regardless of what happened prior.

That said, fuck the playoff. I’d rather go to Pasadena 100 times out of 100.

      • Idk about his ceiling. He had WSU competing at a division championship level a few years. It will be interesting to see what he can do with sec talent opposed to bottom of the pac 12 talent. My buddy who is a WSU fan always said that the air raid type offense is the easiest way to compete with the teams that have more talent. It’s hard to argue that point. If leach can get a good DC I’m sure he will be fairly successful.

        • If he gets higher than he has, he’ll regress to the mean. He favors personal style (air raid) And identity over substance, and he’ll always be his biggest limitation until he realizes it.

Ribs and burgers bought for Damir Collins BBQ Celebration tomorrow. Expecting about 20 friends and family. If Damir commits at 3 as we all hope then the grilling and drinks start. If not we have agreed everyone will go home. Obviously we want a big party and celebration and this is a key recruit for OSU. Got about 56 Flattail and other beers to go around if the news is good. Go Beavs!

P.S. In a perfect world the Beavs announce a Spielman commitment to rejoin with Gebbia just days after Collins and fans are running on the highest octane Beaver Juice the entire weekend!

      • You must be a skinny man who deals with anxiety and depression in a healthy manner. Depression eating will eliminate leftovers!

        1

We are feeling generally confident. Maybe 85% odds he commits to Oregon State? If so, becomes a real festive party. If not, goes towards 4th of July and will get used then even if not as fresh. Hoping Damir makes his 6/17 birthday a great one for Beaver Nation to celebrate with him!

        • I’m sorry, but those ribs should be on the grill and smoking by 10am if you’re hoping the eating commences at 3pm. You can’t just wait throw those on when you hear the good news.

“All.” Yeah, okay. I’m sure CHAZ/CHOP or whatever the hell they’re calling it now is all a bunch of right wingers too. Totally.
How nice of everyone on the left to donate to bail out a bunch of white supremacists too! Since… you know…. they’re causing all the mischief.

  52. Very surprised McGarry took the 20k offer to go pro.

He would have been drafted next year and got paid way more than 20k. Good luck to him.

  53. Regarding the recruiting commitment topic, for the class of 2021. All signs point to Collins announcing OSU tomorrow.

Interestingly, I’ve been chatting with someone who has contact with several of our recruits. He says there’s at least one more specific recruit who is saying he already would have committed to OSU, but coach Smith is telling the recruit to wait until after he gets a chance to visit campus before he makes that decision public.(this is a recruit with well over 10 P5 offers)

A sign that Covid19 travel restrictions and the extended NCAA recruiting dead period is affecting the way Oregon State’s staff is handling recruiting this cycle.
There are plenty of teams out there taking verbal commitments from players who have never set foot on campus, but it appears OSU is electing to play it slow and make sure the players have a good sense of the program before moving forward with a verbal pledge. Guess we’ll see how that strategy works out. Smith has been really good at retaining commitments once a guy verbals.

    • Maybe Smith uses the visit to further evaluate the recruit to see if he is a good fit. I does seems kind of odd though. But we all know verbals are only as good as the sign paper on signing day… and that is an unknown until it happens.

    • I really appreciate the way he watches out for his players. His actions are louder than any speech he could make. Proud of him and glad he got the job.

    • With the way things are now with transfers it seems smart. Make sure you have guys that want to be here for 4 to 5 years and wont transfer. That kind of attrition can really hurt your program like how GA destroyed our QB room.

So, in the interest of providing readers of this blog with information that they can use to fight the lock-down and save the football season everyone here (naively, I think) expects to occur this fall, consider the results of the following studies.

A team of economists from Cal-Berkeley, based on their study cellphone records, travel patterns, etc., measured against medical reports, have determined that your garden variety social distancing reduced community (person to person) spread by 50% from what it would have been otherwise. However, the harsher full shelter-in-place measures reduced spread by only an additional 5%. Combined, this resulted in the saving of 74,000 lives, but you can see where the true effectiveness lay. On the other hand, the lock-downs precipitated grave economic and social costs, measuring in the trillions of dollars and a stand-alone epidemic of gloom.

The IZA Institute of Labor Economics studied the Berkeley results and concluded that the 74,000 lives saved, presumptively, can only be counted as in-hand if a vaccine or cure is found in short order. Otherwise, many deaths were not prevented, merely postponed.

Another study by a team of economists at MIT concludes that, going forward, twice as many lives can be saved by focusing resources on the most vulnerable rather than squandering them on those who face almost no risk–school children.

I don’t believe any study, but I also don’t think it’s a guarantee we get Football this Fall.
Especially NCAA football given the risk to students. I’d say 50/50 at this point, and there are scenarios (e.g. overlap with flu season this Fall) that could cause a mess and result in calling the entire thing off. The only possible workaround I can think of is allow the players to skip a year of academics so they can isolate in a certain location off campus where games are played. Not sure that would be allowed…parents, players, liability all come into play. But they have months to figure it out and should be thinking outside the box now. Is Barnes doing that? He couldn’t think inside a box if he were living in one, which he might be soon.

      • I don’t know, a study from UC-Berkeley that confirms a conservative talking point merits at least some consideration.

        • Problem is not social distancing or wearing masks is now a political statement. Certain segments of society are pushing policy makers into an all or nothing choice

          • Saw this morning that GOP congressmen are considering a walk out because Pelosi asked committees to require masks or exclude people. Just wow. Ironically if they walk out it would achieve the exact same result.

          • Wearing a mask when in public areas can only help and I’m all for it until the vaccine is ready and available. But I just don’t get the people who put one on and have it hanging below their nose or chin… why wear it? My wife and I drove down the Orange County coast in So Cal on Saturday. You would have thought it was 2018… no social distancing, 1000’s of people out, and no mask. I’m just worried that places like the OC are going to bring us back into this thing hard.

          • For sure. There seems to be some sentiment that if you are outside masks are not needed. Definitely safer outside but people are still breathing.

The chinstrap and snoz methods are weird.

  55. Maybe this was mentioned but was told by an incoming freshman’s parent that a five day quarantine is required for all athletes flying but those that are driving there is no quarantine requirement.

    • I think he’s getting closer to a fair rating now. From his latest posts he definitely hasn’t spent quarentine eating cheetos

    • Hot damn, just looked closer and saw the jump is because 247 put him at 88. That means 247 thinks he’s tied for the 4th best guy we offered. He’s essentially a 3+/4 star if the other services follow suite.

      • Someone I chat with who knows him said Lindgren views him as a top 5 Pro Style QB recruit on the West coast.
Would be nice to get to see one of his games in person this year, if they actually have a season.
Saw that his top receiver also got upgraded to 3* on 247. Another possibly overlooked in state guy who is getting recognized more. Probably partially a product of showing up so frquently in Vidlak’s film now that Vidlak is getting more exposure.

I see they have a game at Molalla followed by a game at Banks, Sept11th and 18th. I’ll have to fit one of those in

        https://www.maxpreps.com/m/high-schools/hidden-valley-mustangs-(grants-pass,or)/football/schedule.htm

          • I’m sure the staff knows about him. With the small class, I wonder if he’s a guy that could get an offer late in the cycle depending on what other WR targets do.

          • They know of him for sure, but just havent made him any sort of priority at this point.
I know of 3-4 other WRs they have higher on their list that we have a decent(or better) shot at, but also don’t know how many WRs we will even take if the class remains on the small side. Might be hard for Noga to crack that group. Wonder if a PWO spot would be enough to get him here?

          • Watched Noga’s film. Always catches with his hands, uses his height well, decent hips, fastest guy on the field half the time, tallest guy on the field and looks like he knows how to be deceptive with his head/eyes.

I can’t think of a reason not to pursue him except the level of competition makes it very hard to judge his actual ability.

    • Brink had said previously the ball really “exploded out of Vidlak’s hand”, or something similar. Brink was convinced right away Vidlak was DI talent. I posted his quote several threads back.

  56. I’m ESPN’s way too early MLB draft 2021 rankings, two OSU commits listed. Reed is looking like a potential first rounder. Knight made the list too.

Hope they choose the route Madrigal and Grenier did and come to school. That’s three years of greatness.

  57. Ribs have been dry rubbed. Hope after 3 pm I can baste and get going. Otherwise will have to freeze like this. Beer is on ice. First guests arriving in 30 minutes to await Damir Collins decision and hopefully celebrate his birthday and commitment across Beaver Nation. Go Beavs!

  58. Is he gonna do a live feed with a bunch of hats in front of him? Those always crack me up. Except that time the guy wore an orange shirt then picked UCLA

    • Not that I know of. Just figuring one of a handful of outlets will let us know as soon as it’a announced.
I suspect it will be a little late because I saw that his coach, Houston Lillard, is stuck in I-5 traffic at the moment. Bet those guys will wait for him to show up

      • When I heard he was announcing too, I was thinking he could be another candidate that goes to a big time program, is overwhelmed and transfers somewhere smaller. I hope he is successful but he will have to produce.

What ever happened to that kid from portland that went to I think it was Kansas instead of osu and was rated pretty high?

DAMIR COLLINS COMMITS TO OREGON STATE!!! RIBS BASTED AND ABOUT TO HIT THE GRILL!! BEERS OPENING! PARTY ON BEAVER NATION!!!

  60. Collins is a solid add. He’s basically a duplicate of Trey Lowe. High floor player. Not sure where his ceiling is. Kind of think he’ll end up with a similar career as Terron Ward. May not be a full time starter but is very effective in his opportunities.

Has breakaway speed. Very elusive in open field.

High three star. Could be 4 star after senior year.

      • I read something saying he doesn’t have the size for full time workload. 5’9” 197 lbs was listed though. For a 17 year old kid that strikes me as someone that will round into workhorse size

  61. @NB, good call on keeping an eye on Vidlak prior to his offer. Is this a new trend for this coaching staff? Find these diamonds in rough and then get them in front of the right people (people that actually know football and can alter their rankings).

Off on a camping trip and just saw the Collins news. How do we keep Pitre forever????

    • It was actually former Beaver TE Quinn Smith who pointed out Vidlak to me. He coaches at the HS team that defeated Vidlak’s Hidden Valley in the state championship game. Said he was blown away by this gunslinger QB they had just faced, so I took a look at his film and stats and he just stood out right away on film.
From there I tweeted about Vidlak a few times and then found out shortly after that, our coaches were in contact with hin and wanted to have him visit campus for some in person evaluation.
Then Covid hits and visits are scrapped, so there was some delay before we actually offered him. Probably would have happened sooner if it werent for the recruiting dead period being extended all of spring

  62. I dont understand if it’s sloppy reporting or what, but here Brandon Huffman says Collins is the 7th ranked APB nationally.
And in Nemec’s article released at the same time, he says Collins is the 5th ranked APB.
But just yesterday, I saw with my own eyes that Collins was the #2 ranked APB on the same site.
And just for good measure, I looked to see if Collins had moved and sure enough, today they have him at #5. Yet there are only 3 other guys ranked ahead of him…. So wouldn’t that make him #4??

    https://247sports.com/college/oregon-state/Article/Oregon-State-APB-Damir-Collins-goes-in-depth-on-Beavers-commitment-148242190/

    • Now i see huffman is looking at the composite ranking(why let your own sites numbers be dilluted by rivals and espn rankings, when everybody knows those sites are terrible?)

Still doesnt explain how a #5 ranking exists when there are only 3 higher ranked players in the actual 247 numbers. #3 is completely missing.

Anyway, i’ve killed way too much time with this.
Here’s a link to the google spreadsheet i was using last year. I’ve updated it today with a 2021 tab and links. Will try to start maintaining this a little better as we get further along with this recruiting cycle.

      https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xn1RlZ_tPMKhlisch8iqbAvy6Azm0hwxzJKhV_jixGo/edit?usp=drivesdk

  63. So fehmel gets tj surgery. Is this something Yeskie could have helped these guys avoid? I know nothing about baseball, especially the high schools years when I’ve heard that is when the build up to cause a tj surgery occurs. Anyways, that’s two starters in a few years that are facing that injury. Might be more off the radar guys too.

    • I never liked how much Casey and Yeakie relies on the starters. It probably did win us a few more games but some years come playoff time it seemed to me guys would be wearing down a bit. Who knows in the TJ though, seems like everyone is getting it, but multiple weeks in a row of 100-120 pitch outings certainly can’t help. I mean look at the MLB, promising prospects are being held down around 80 pitches, Stras got shut down for the playoffs one year early on. I think both pitch count of a game and cumulative wear over time are likely factors though. Also it never seemed like OSU under Casey and Yeskie ever developed much of a bullpen, might be a chicken or the egg argument. I think Canham is going to take more of a pro approach to managing arms, IMO that is a good thing.

Alex Crawford, one of the main people behind the Giant Killers doc that’s being made, has released a short video on the Dee Andros/racial issues top from the late 60’s at OSU.
Worth checking out. Angry was just a couple weeks early on this topic.

    https://vimeo.com/430214815

        • Karen’s are just super entitled annoying women who send food back and ask to speak to managers. They are the annoying female in a group of friends that you just can’t shake.

          • No, Karen’s tend to be those people that don’t mind their own business. They give their opinions when none are asked for. They escalate situations that are really minor, to the point of calling the police. Race usually but not always will plays a part.
Before 2020 we use to call them cunts.
Type Karen into youtube and be amazed.

          • I mean Karen has just been the nice version of c*** for atleast 20 years. We used to call one of our teachers a Karen in middle school. The race side of it is the new part because Karen’s are there ones that call the police Everytime they see another race in their block.

Same concept as Chads being dipshit douchebags.

          • I agree with BB, ASU’s WBB coach is not a Karen. Some realtors probably are, but not this one.
BTW: The U of A WBB coach is one tough cookie as well, and certainly not a Karen either.
BTW#2: I see angry has put up a new thread, thereby eliminating the opportunity for this thread to erase the record 1,000 comment thread instigated by that dopey duck fan. UGH!

  65. Great to see this staff getting talent – and in-state talent at that – in Vidlak and Collins. I hope they are equally adept and holding onto them when they get more attention and offers. How great would it be to see these two leading the Beavers to a good bowl game in 3-4 years?

    • 2
      1

      Yeah.
That was all super awkward, so if he doesn’t, no way he maintains that locker room. Might as well run him off at that point.

      • They have now dug up an article from 1989 when he played qb for okie st where he was acussed of using racial slurs against Colorado during a game. Which of course he denied at the time.

    • Gundy seems stuck in another era and just wishes things were football 24/7 again, but that’s not life (especially now). I think Dabo Sweeney has some of the same tendencies, but of course, he’s won national championships, so he’s cut more slack.
