Basketball Comments: Beavers @ Howard

69

Beavers basketball tips off today at 1pm, and should be ending around the time the Stanford game kicks off.

Below is the scouting report on Howard. They are another bad team, so hopefully the Beavers can get above .500 and build upon Wednesday's confidence and momentum.

Howard is 1-4 this season, with a win against Bowling Green and losses to Purdue, Delaware and St. Francis (NY), after finishing 7-25 last year. Kevin Nickelberry is in his first year as the head coach of the Bison after serving as the head coach at Hampton University for the past three seasons. Howard lost freshman center Theodore Boyomo and junior guard Calvin Thompson for the season to knee injuries. Kyle Riley, the only senior on the team, has missed the last three games due to an ankle injury but is listed as probable against the Beavers. Sophomore forward Mike Phillips leads the team in scoring (10.4 per game) and rebounding (6.6 per game).

Today's game is not on TV. You can hear it on KKAD. I haven't been able to find a video stream for this one.

  1. Angry, the basketball game won’t be ending as the football game kicks off unless they play a 3 and a 1/2 hr game. I expect the Beavers to win by at least 20-25 points but should win by more than that. Howard is a really bad team so this game I doubt will be close passed the 15:00 mark in the first half.

    • True. How long do basketball games even last? I never pay attention to that. Maybe 2 hours? Okay, so we’ll have an hour to bask or sulk before kickoff.

I agree, I feel confident in at least a 15 point victory

      • It’s somewhere in the vicinity of 2 1/2 to 3 hours angry…depending on time outs, fouls, injuries, etc.

Or at least that’s sorta how I clocked it.

Am I wrong in wondering why we don’t try to schedule more difficult opponents?

It’s not like football, where a shitty non-conference season can fuck your whole world up. Granted, I wouldn’t want a whole season of Duke, Marquette, etc- but more games that are televised would be nice.

        • They put a schedule like this together to have the team have a good non conference season and build the confidence of the team by winning. When you have a losing culture like the Beavers have had you want them to start well and be confident and believe they’re gonna win when they take the floor. If they get crushed by Duke or some NCAA tourney caliber of opponent it would just hurt this group. I think it would snowball and the season could go south early on.

        • If this team makes the NIT this season i think Coach Rob would want tougher games next season and challenge themselves. You usually don’t see teams having challenging schedules unless they’ve had success in the past and the coach feels they will bounce back if they lose.

  2. I am hoping for a triple play….Beavers in both sports and the Utes in Football. Game starts in an hour….Go Utes….(Yes, I root for the Beavers when the play Utah).

I thought the Howard game was scheduled for the team to hit the Whitehouse again? Maybe not since Obama is on the DL?

  3. Ahem! (I think that’s how you spell clearing-of-one’s-throat to call attention to something).

The women’s basketball team won another game last night. Maybe this is a weak pre-season schedule too, but they need all the confidence they can gain after last year’s mess.

  4. Keeps getting worse for Lathen…misses a wide open dunk and gets a technical. Sounds like he is sitting down. Beavers seem to be shooting a lot of threes again.

      • Utes seemed to fall apart mentally after the TCU beat down, got very lucky against San Diego State. I was still hoping for a 10 win season, but that is in doubt. Usually Kyle Whittingham teams are tough as nails. Beavers hoop, back to the same old, same old. I am looking for a great second half to prove that things are changing.

By the way, Oregon Ducks b-ball does not look that bad right now. Catron as been playing like a beast. I do not think there are going to be as bad as people thought unfortunately!

        • Yeah, TCU jumped out on them early and they seemed just stunned and they haven’t been the same since. They should be better next season. I’m intrigued to see how they will do in the Pac-12.

I still think Oregon will finish last.

  5. When you click on the link that’s on the media kings website you’re asked to sign up for something called isport.

Does anyone know anything about isport?

  6. That half was about as poor as we could have played. I was afraid the travel was going to affect us. It sounds like some of them are just starting to get warmed up.

The true measure should be if we make adjustments to pound it low and just run away in the second half. TO’s are out of control, and FT shooting is ridiculous… not to mention the shooting of anyone not named Johnson, Starks and *gulp* Wallace.

Calvin needs to step it up now, and Collier needs some time in the lane.

Brandt would do us some good in this game as well. Do we know if his foot is good enough to play right now?

  7. We’re doing a good job of getting the ball in the paint. Now we need to shut down that option for them. Collier needs to rotate in now and take away their post play. I think he had a couple blocked shots in the first half.

  8. I hate how the broadcasters glorify this Globetrotter play. “He lobs it up and Cunningham tried to slam it!”

Great, he missed. How about just a simple pass and simple layup? See, that scenario actually results in points, even if it’s not flashy.

  9. 77% from the line in the second half wins us this game… that and getting to the line 26 times.

They started moving the ball through the post, and Howard couldn’t keep up. You would think Coach Rob might scheme the game to start that way.

    No?

  10. Ok…

Coach Rob sounded like me when assessing this game. It’s good to prove to yourself that you can win on the road while playing poorly. FT’s sucked in the first half. Spacing sucked in the first half. Defense needs some work. Omari can be better than his stat line. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

I guess I don’t have much to add.
