As always, use this thread to discuss today's game.

Keep in mind of the bowl implications since the Beavers, despite their poor record, currently sit 3rd in the Pac-10, and therefore still have a (long) shot at the Alamo Bowl and a realistic chance at the Holiday Bowl. There are many different scenarios based on whether the Beavers beat Stanford or Oregon for bowl-eligiblity and whether Auburn loses, but let's start with this week's game.

If the Beavers beat Stanford, the Cardinal are most likely out of the Rose Bowl picture, unless TCU plays in the National Title game and the Cardinal get an at large (though, losing late in the season, you have to think they wouldn't get a BCS game at all, but with the Pac-10 tie ins to that game maybe they do). So Stanford is either an at-large for the Rose Bowl, or in the Alamo Bowl. That means if the Beavers win this week, they could make the Holiday Bowl, even if they lose to the Ducks. The Beavers hold the tie breaker with Arizona, so even a Wildcat win next week wouldn't matter.

If the Beavers lose this week and beat the Ducks, the Ducks would earn the Rose Bowl bid. TCU and Auburn would play in the title game. Stanford? Alamo Bowl. The Beavers would secure the Holiday Bowl.

Am I calculating this correctly, guys, or am I missing something? I know bowl game committees have been given more leway to select the teams they want, so maybe we have to worry about Arizona in the event of a tie. In which case, the Beavers have to win their next two to get to the Holiday Bowl.

Anyway, the bottom line is there's still something to play for. Keep in mind, though, that the current Holiday Bowl is nothing more than the old Sun Bowl. Meaning, it was demoted and now features the #3 Pac-10 team rather than #2.

  1. I really don’t give a shit what bowl game the Beavers end up playing in. I just want the Beavers to spoil the Ducks’ title game hopes.

2 Rose Bowl dreams ruined = 1 National Title dream ruined

    I’d be content with that.

    • Agree 100%. Just saying…

The Beavers most likely play in no bowl game, but a lot can still happen, and it makes these games worth caring about.

  2. I am glad that the Beavs did beat USC because it makes the final two games more interesting as they fight for bowl eligibility, but I get pissed as I watch team after team take apart UCLA. Can you believe ASU hung 55 on them?

    • UCLA has athletes as evidenced by their recruiting classes and beating Texas. If you don’t come to play, you lose. That’s the nature of modern college football. The margin of a win/loss is fine.

      • Watching Stanford previously, their defense looks pretty slow. Is it just me? That’s the kind of team we can take advantage of.

I feel strangely confident about this game, but we need to see how we come out in the 1st.

And then the 3rd, since we seem to get crushed in the 3rd quarter of every game (except USC).

        • I agree regarding slow. I’ve had this penciled as a win all year.

ps. Is it theoretically possible for two teams from the same conference to play in the title game? Oregon and Stanford can finish #1 and #3…I never really thought about it, and I’m having a mental block.

It seems like in a conference without a title game this would be possible.

    • We need to take some lessons from this Stanford defense or offense. They have fewer athletes then us and are kicking our butts all over the field. Minus Luck of course… but this wasn’t only the Luck show. I guess I see what a good offensive and defensive coordinator can do for a team.

    • Don’t worry, that amazing defensive line that got all those sacks that the media has been fingering itself over will strike!…or not.

And then the LBs will miss it, and then the safeties will have to stop them.

I think Safeties need a new job description at OSU.

“You are supposed to tackle- every time- because no one else will.”

      • The call to go for it wasn’t bad, its that awkward area where a punt is only good for like 30 yards. And if you can’t get 1 yard on two plays, you might as well pack it up now.

Our offense really needs to put some point up, and that starts with fly sweeps and Quizz carries, not 75% passes.

          • Doesn’t matter when in the game it happens, a punt there gains you next to nothing and a 1 yard gain should not be a deal breaker.

We got punched in the mouth and needed to get momentum back, and we didn’t. You could argue that that opening drive is the BEST time to go for it.

          • The punt gained them about 30 yards, which means Stanford would be in scoring position right now and they’re not. Have to make teams work a bit. 3rd quarter, good call. 1st…no. Unless they make it, of course. ;)

  3. Our D is giving up the run AND the pass. Take one away, come on!

I’m watching our LBs for the rest of the game, to see if they just stick themselves on blockers or what, cause they seem to never make plays. Ever.

  4. Wow…

I’m glad I didn’t get my hopes up when we beat USC. Harbaugh is a much better coach and his boys are making us look like idiots.

That one play they didn’t even need to block Paea to take him out of the play. Our lack of discipline does that every time.

    fuck.

  5. Dominic Glover has at least 4 fuck ups per game.

    He already has 2.

No discipline. And Banker is up for an assistant coaching award.

    Assists us in losing.

    Fuck

      • That would just be too….versatile.

        We can’t have that.

However, if offense scores- maybe the offensive players can bitch at the defense players like a couple games back…which is always the sign of a well-coached team who is trying to work together to win.

    • “…Pounding Quizz up the middle? The advantage is the edge….”

What makes it even more disgusting is OSU doesn’t have the OL for pounding it up the middle. Every running play Quiz is pretty much on his own.

  6. A fly sweep or reverse with Wheaton would be result in at least 20 yards, possibly a TD. But, let’s pound Quizz at the defenses strength instead. Okaaay

  7. Wow.

Lack of discipline in our offensive line?

    Surprise, surprise.

Linnenkohl…I seem to remember he had a lot of hype surrounding him going into the season.

And now a nice sack to complement our awful calls on D.

  8. I still think the Beavers could win this game with offense alone if they call the right plays. Langsdorf has laid the biggest egg of his terrible career–his play calling is so so so bad. Bloggers should not be able to develop better game plans than coaches. Has anyone been paying attention to what Paul Cryst is doing at Wisconsin? *sniff*
But hey, he gave a kidney!

  9. I can’t wait for halftime because that’s when the OSU coaching staff will make their halftime adjustments which have become legendary in football circles.

    • Right?
I haven’t had to turn a game off since the BYU fiasco, but the coaches are so ill prepared tonight I don’t see myself making it through this game. I’ve got a Netflix and lady beav waiting.

  10. I’m with Angry on this one. I’ve got a lot better things to do with my time then watch this past the half if we get scored on again.

  11. The beavs are just out gunned by a school that use to complain about not getting tough athletes, not any more.

To top it off, our play calling sucks!

Can someone tell Katz to not throw everyball 100 mph and teach him to throw the ball away?

    • Katz is one of these physical specimens who simply put is not a winner. You can see the fear in his eyes.

This game isn’t on him, but I’m just saying, going forward he is not a winner.

  12. This is a team that has regressed majorly again, and has never achieved any consistency this year. What is being exposed is lack of talent and skill, along with the typical inept coaching. Tough to be a fan of a team that is as pathetic as these guys are tonight. What bowl game does 4-5 get you into?

  13. #28 is waaaaaay too deep…luck hasn’t thrown a deep ball yet!!! He would be better used if he and Hardin were to cover the same WR together with #28 to be back farther than Hardin. Basically double team the WR.

Another thing is is that the Beavs are over pursuing like crazy. 51 on the last TD over pursued and had a bad angle…you can’t adjust that at halftime. Pack it up and try again next week.

  14. Even that last 40 second sequence was awful. They get a great play to Halahuni and then let the clock run down when they had time outs left? Please help me understand this team.

Off the wall question…do the Beavs ever even try to block a punt. Has anyone come close in the last five years?

  15. fwiw – it’s not all Katz’s fault. The OL sucks and that makes any QB look bad. Langsdorf’s play calling sucks and that too makes any QB look bad.

  16. I think I could live with Mannion next year but with some inevitable growing pains Riley probably is too timid to risk it during hopefully the Rodgers Bros. final season. For the overall next 2-3 years though it could be the wise choice.

  17. I’m not sure what you guys see in Mannion. He’s not at all mobile, he’ll have “growing pains” in this offense, and from all accounts he’s DA part II. We need a smart, savvy QB. I don’t care how hard he throws the ball or how tall he is.

What is so great about Mannion??

    • You are right that he isn’t that quick. He has almost all the throws and I guess I am hoping we will be smarter. Johnathon Smith is who we need right now..

And now a Stanford long ass touchdown..

Go ahead and fire Banker with Lansdork..

Both need to take a long hike!

      • Exactly, Johnathan Smith. I’d take a smart, savvy QB over a guy who can “make all the throws”. I’m actually not very high on Mannion at this point, and have a hard time understanding the love other than he’s not Katz.

  18. If DeCarolis doesn’t fire a coordinator after this season (unless we beat the Ducks) then I will start campaigning for his dismissal. These guys all are way too comfortable with mediocre play. Unless we get louder about demanding change they will keep sticking together, raking in our state dollars and accepting mediocrity. Beaver Nation is regressing if we aren’t moving forward. Something has to change and it should be a coordinator or two. Langdorf can focus on his kid once he is fired.

    • I know I’m not donating any money any time soon.

It’s amazing how old OSU fans are…it’s at the point where I don’t want them to show the stands.

      • That’s not the answer. Between Sark, Kiffin, Kelly, and Harbaugh, you can see everything is about mindset. Stanford is twice as slow as OSU, and they won by 40 points. Did you see their intensity? Every top team has that.

        • And another thing they have in common: they’re awesome recruiters. The better players you bring here the more swag and confidence they have….it’s exactly what we need.

      • We have enough money to run a successful program. What shouldn’t be done is 10-20 year contracts like Riley’s. Every year he is 6-6 and makes a Hunger bowl or anything DeCarolis “rewards” him with an extension automatically. Awful contrcat. Chip Kelly’s on the other hand has almost all the bonuses based on being in a BCS bowl. Unless the bowl is Alamo or higher there should be no reward more than a handshake for a decent job and whatever low bowl you may make. Certainly nothing to get crazy over and reward a 10-20 year deal because we once scored 3 points in our best bowl under Riley..the Sun Bowl. Give me a break!! Fire Banker and Langsdorf and get in some new blood. Give Riley two more years and if he can’t get us to atleast a Holiday Bowl he should be GONE. DeCarolis blew his wad over 3 points in a Sun Bowl that noone except Beaver and Pitt fans were watching. It was a big mistake.

  19. I think we should all email DeCarolis to show how frustrated the fans are; it might not be much, but it’s something. We have to at least put a little pressure on him. I’m getting sick of losing the damn streak as an excuse for mediocrity. Jim Harbaugh said it best: “If you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse.” It’s been obvious for the past few years that we have reached our highest point with this staff and aren’t getting any better.

    • I agree with your point, but it is easy for Harbaugh to say that cliched rah-rah crap when Stanford is just a stepping stone to better things. The Trees are not going to go 11-1 every year and no coach has stayed there long.

  20. GAMEDAY in CORVALLIS next week for the Civil War!!!

DeCarolis may have saved his job, but without a win both Banker and Langsdorf should be 86ed.

On a scale of 1-10 how much they should get the axe..

    Banker 9.6
    Langsdorf 9.3
    Riley 7.0

That said, lets try to show the nation that us Beaver Fans are the real deal and get nuts for Gameday. Look like it is going to be in the MU Quad which opens at 4:30. Very great place to have it and a beautiful building to showcase. Lets try to have some wild and fun signs and be even more creative than the Ducks.

Get crazy, get loud, be passionate and maybe just maybe we can be in “USC-like” mode and pull off another Gameday upset of a #1. There are been quite a few this year. Go Beavs!!

  21. I’m with OS_Beaver.

GameDay is coming to Corvallis next Saturday. The whole country will be watching the Beavers battle the Ducks, to see whether OSU can upset the top team in the nation. It doesn’t get much better than this.!

Sure, the Ducks will probably murder us. But it’s not a certainty. If OSU comes out strong the way we did against USC, and if we catch a few breaks, anything could happen. For me and many Beaver fans, beating the Ducks on national TV — thereby costing the Ducks a spot in the NC game — would turn this whole frustrating season around.

What post-season bowl game could be nearly as good or as exciting as all this? If we do beat the Ducks and make a post-season bowl, it will be anticlimactic. The main event is next Saturday, starting with GameDay in the MU Quad at 6 am. I’m already stoked….

  22. This result is what happens when you do turn the ball over against a great team. Yardage totals are about the same as TCU/Boise St. Beavers were overdue for a turnover meltdown.

  23. I think the general theme here is; short term, of course we’d all like to see a CW upset, but in the long run it would just mean more of the same mediocrity because most beaver fans seem content with a couple top performances a year ie the Arizona & USC games this year.
Face it, a good 50-0 embarrassment next week would do more for our program in terms of needed changes than an upset would do for recruiting.
I will be at Gameday & the game itself both supporting the beavs as best I can, mostly because I’ve already paid for this year. Next year’s basf donation however will depend on off season changes.
    Go beavs!

    • Unfortunately I agree that a blow-out on the Beavs is about the only thing that MAY cause changes.

I actually don’t know how happy I’d be if they beat the yucks… I mean I’d be happy of course yet pissed off that this team pissed away this season like they did.

I’m putting blame on the coaching for sure… but the only guy I saw really wanting it tonight was Paea. Katz over-threw, under-threw, or threw to hard. Canfield got better as he went along… I’m just not seeing that from Katz.

Angry, losing at Standford and to the yucks, what is your opinion on the effect on our recruiting efforts? It can’t help, or can it somehow?

    • I think the Beavers do need to make changes (starting with a new play-caller, and a new defensive coordinator). However, I don’t think we are going to see major changes this off-season unless James and Jacquizz Rodgers opt out, and decide not to come back to OSU for next year.

If James and Jacquizz do bolt after this season, that will represent electric shock treatment for Beaver Nation, and change will inevitably follow.

If, on the other hand, James and Jacquizz return for the 2011 season, the attitude will be “don’t rock the boat”. All efforts will be made to get as many wins as possible in 2011 while OSU still has the Rodgers brothers. Most or all changes will be delayed until after the Rodgers are gone, starting in 2012.

Personally, I hope and expect that the Rodgers brothers will return next season. Even with the same coaching staff, I think next season’s OSU offense could be much more productive (featuring the Rodgers brothers plus an improved Ryan Katz, Markus Wheaton, Joe Halahuni, and Jordan Bishop, along with — one prays — a better O-line). The OSU defense should be better, too (e.g., the linebackers should be significantly faster and more athletic).

But in the unlikely event that the Rodgers brothers don’t return next year, that will be a GREAT opportunity for genuine change and improvement in the OSU football program. And that, of course, would be good, too…

  24. Looks like Cliff has finally had it with the Beavs, pretty much an F report card this time. Nice to see the media finally get real about this team. In my mind, statistics do not lie over 11 games, this team is/was very mediocore and last night showed what is going to happen when you have turnovers.

  25. Their not coming to watch your beavs upset the Ducks. Their coming to watch the Ducks dot the i on their trip to the Nati. Its obvious that USC was a week team and their heart was easily broken, Its been a bad year for them. Jump and do the hype all you want but the Ducks are looking squarely at you with no distractions. It will be the grand finale of a fireworks show. You will get the best we got and that spells blow out. Hype goes so far and then its x’s and o’s.

  26. To have you guys feel a little better, we
re in Ryan Nowicki’s final four along with Penn State, USC, and Washington. It would be a nice pickup, and according to scout, he plays with a mean streak which is what our OL needs.

    • Cav seems to be a pretty good recruiter and this kid is only rated as a 3 star so maybe OSU has a chance.

When a kid has OSU in a list which contains schools like Ryan has it seems like 9.9 times out of 10.0 he does not chose OSU and if he does 9 times out of 10 it’s because he doesn’t have the grades to qualify anywhere else.

This is why I do not even bother to look at the recruiting boards. I’ve grown tired of being disappointed by Riley’s inability to recruit.

  27. Having James and Jacquizz has been both a blessing and a curse. The blessing side is obvious so I’ll get to the curse part. If these 2 great athelets had not come to OSU I believe changes would have already been made in the coaching staff. In other words OSU’s win-loss record would have been much worse without them.

So, I’m glad they play for OSU and wouldn’t have it any other way but I can’t help but wonder where OSU would be now if they hadn’t come to Corvallis.

    • If I were Riley I would see the Rodgers brothers coming back (if they do) as a gift or do-over not to be thrown away like it was this year.

I just hope he realizes this get does anything and everything to take full advantage of this gift. If he opened every position to competition (best man starts – period) and did something about his assistants we could be in the top 10 next year.

I have emotionally checked out this year, it was to much to handle… I only hope the Beavs don’t suck me in again next year only to kick me in the balls again.

      • You have to have a defense that can get stops and get the ball back to the Rodgers brothers. If there is no improvement on that side, then I expect to see more of the same.
