Howard 2 run single makes it 7-0 Beavers after 5 innings. Howard and Keyes both with 3 hits
Moore’s nite is done 7.2 IP 0 R 2 H 6 K’s
b8 and Beavs up 7-0. Moore goes 7 and 2/3 giving up 2 hits and striking out 6. Reece and Wilson are left to discuss the ugliness of Nike U’s new baseball unis.
Flemer faces the final 4 batters without allowing a base runner and fanning one. Final 7-0.
Keyes looks like a man on a mission. 8 consecutive hits. The kid is on fire and playing great defense. Would love to see this continue through the season.
L J Moore leaving the Sooners. Any rumors about him ending up in Corvallis. Perry does have the Fresno connections.
Keyes to bat second again today, Hendrix returns as DH.
GO BEAVS !
Oneoldbeav didn’t you call Keyes in the 2 hole?
I’ve enjoyed watching and pulling for Keyes and think he has a lot of potential. However, it was Angry who made a good case a few days back for putting him in the 2 hole.
Dylan Davis with a 2 run single in the bottom of the 6th gave Oregon State a 3-1 lead. Still 3-1 in bottom of the 7th
4-1 now on a Logan Ice RBI single
5-1 Beavers after Conforto is hit with a pitch with the bases loaded. 5-1 Oregon State after 7 innings
How good is Wright State?
They aren’t good but they did beat Michigan State, a team who Oregon State lost to and they took a game from a solid UC Irvine squad
Fry cruising through 8. They look real comfortable at home.
Thompson looks like crap.
Should have left in Fry.
Gasoline can of a bullpen.
9th inning pitching has not been a neat deal this year for the Beavs.
They are finding their identity.
Beavers win 6-4
Second game lineup has Casper at 1b, Keyes catching and batting 5th. Peterson batting second, has to be feeling that it’s time to break out of his semi-slump, he can do better than the 2 for 4 in the first game.
Keyes catching should be interesting. I know Casey said he would before the season. I’m thinking he’ll catch for 6 or 7 and give way to fishback.
Still nothing on Esposito beyond “indefinite suspension for violation of team rules”. Sure nice to see Ice doing so well, big shoes to fill.
Anyone else lost the stream?
Beav baseball twitter says the issue with the video link is being “worked on”
Successfully fixed in time to see Keyes score from first on a double by Clark to score first run in the game.
Jack tripped over the cord.
Gabe Clark just destroys lefties. Shame he has issues against righties, only thing stopping him from being in the lineup every game
WR, Willie Tucker coming from Cal Poly as pref walk-on
Trosin signed with Ark State: http://247sports.com/Player/Tyler-Trosin-8624
Dylan just hosed. Terrible called third strike
Going to b4, tied 2-2. Pitch count rising for Schultz. Feels like it will take another 3-4 runs to win this one.
Clark and Casper start the b4 with BB’s, got to get runs this inning.
Bad stuff. Two BB’s and a HBP then Peterson grounds into a double play to end the inning with ZERO runs. Still tied at 2.
Casey decides to bunt with 2 on and nobody out against a pitcher who is struggling to throw strikes. Eventually leads to a double play and the Beavers get no runs out of it
Don’t understand giving up an out in that situation. Let em swing.
3-2 Wright State
Casper continues to impress with an e3
Nope, that was Keyes playing first and committing the error. Ice came on to catch.
That was Kavin Keyes with the error
My bad, was following on twitter and didn’t know the switch had been made
Nice play by Ice to nail runner at second on a WP in the dirt.
Lots of lost opportunities in this one so far, need an actual rally
Beavs defense has been pretty bad this year.
Losing 6-2 with 4 errors now.
Very disappointing, failure to capitalize on BB’s/HBP and 4 errors.
Ucks lose second in a row to CalStFull, doesn’t make this Beavs performance go down any easier; three outs to go, be very surprised to see Beavs turn this one around.
Say they go to 7-3. You guys okay with that given the competition?
Nope. Between this game and the loss to Indiana should have won at least one of them (probably this one).
I do think the lack of availability of Wetzler was worth a game. Eden has a way to go, had higher hopes for him. BP in general a fail.
Postive=Ice’s D and Keyes hitting.
EDIT: On second thought, I’d change out Mich State for Indiana above.
The defense has been crap and the bullpen even worse. Peterson not being able to bat other than bunt is a major weakness. How is that possible?
as I write this we may be looking at 6-4 after Sunday’s game. I would have expected 9-1, at worst
8-2 after the first 10 games. Infield Defense continues to be an issue, though better of late. Clearly there are issues with the bull pen.
That said, last year’s 15-0 start should not be considered the standard, even for a good team. Bottom line: it’s early yet; the team is young; Pat knows what he’s dointg
OT: the WBB site has nice highlight film from last night’s win.
Unlike the Beavs mens bb team the womens team is fun to watch They are very
well coached and young , the future looks bright for womens hoops. BDC better
lock Rueck up before some smarter AD offers.
One of the single worst things I have EVER READ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
You don’t enjoy watching unselfish team play, or a group that knows how to use the clock? A team that shows tenacious defense even when up by double digits? A sharp passing game? WOW
Do you even watch womens hoops? Sharp passing? Tenacious D? Using clock?
I’ve been watching this year, but it is such a slow sport. The passes the Beavs were getting away with would have caused my coach from junior high to run the whole team until we were broken. Zony was making the same passes. But one of the teams cared.
Women’s hoops is so subjected to talent and height it’s ridiculous. And that’s a direct result of the speed and levels of talent and height that do exist and have existed.
And I don’t know if you’ve ever shot a women’s ball before, but it’s like tossing pebbles in a barrel.
That being said, they’re doing something the men are not doing. They’re making winning a habit. That’s enough to get me to watch and cheer for them despite the game being soooooooo slow and unathletic
Jack you miss my point. I was commenting on coaching. The womens team is
fun to watch because they are well coached and play hard. I agree they are slower and not as athletic as men but it turns my stomach to watch our mens team with no coaching and very little emotion.
I wasn’t responding to you or anything you said. Thus, it follows that my post misses your point.
Besides… I think he’s responding to the thought of Bobby D giving someone else an extension.
I’ll respond to two of your points:
1) Agree, the OP may very well be commenting on giving yet another extension to a coach. If that is the point, fine. A contract structured to give short term rewards for PERFORMANCE makes more sense.
2) As to tenacious D, I doubt you were in the stands with me Friday night when, although up by more than 15 pts, the gals were stealing, diving for loose balls, and holding their own in crowded rebound situations.
Rueck has built a TEAM from a group of individuals. While I’m sure you have much experience following women’s basketball, even a relative novice like me can see the results.
I’m not arguing that the women’s hoops team is doing poorly. I’m saying the average ability of an NCAA women’s hoops team is very low compared to the men’s side. Everyone in the league (NCAA D1) has to play under the same rules and conditions. They make the average what it is. And the Beavs are much better than that average. I would say they have talent enough to be one of the elite teams in the nation in a couple years. That’s the benefit of getting to start from scratch like Rueck did. You don’t have to deal wit legacy headaches. You just make the program your own. That’s why players are jettisoned anywhere any new coach shows up… except when the previous coach has left the program in such a pathetic condition that you have to keep all your new players and beg them to care about their school, their team, the doing their schoolwork so the program doesn’t get seriously sanctioned by the NCAA.
The point is that our Beavs fought precisely one Zony rebounder all night. And she was only out-whined by her coach when it came to the refs. Our women would stand with their arms up on D and not move sometimes, and they would still deflect passes. Zony’s players would just stand around unless their player had the ball… and that’s if they knew where their player was. Some of the Beavs skip passes were so slow and poorly conceived that I was sure when they were tossed they were going the other way for a lay-up. But Zony just watched them float over their heads and flat feet. They were probably doing like I was and getting in a quick nap before the pass was done.
The one thing that bugged me was that they almost never dropped it in the post. Ruth was posting well and presenting a hand. The perimeter players would look and pass fake low. Then they would do things like make the infinitely harder skip lobs which I mentioned above. They could have just dropped it to her and slid to the corner for the kick-out if she was doubled. Or she could have taken it straight to the rim one-on-one. I guess it didn’t matter since Zony wasn’t even within 15 feet of most of our perimeter shooters.
Anyway, don’t make the game more than it is. Just because what the players were doing is better than the norm for the league does not mean what they do deserves praise involving superlatives such as the ones you use. They have the talent and size and hopefully smarts to be that kind of team in a year or two (and hopefully beyond). But they’re not there yet. They still look like frosh and sophs out there.
**You seem to be saying it is all relative, I agree.
**”They look like frosh and sophs out there”, yes, and they are frosh and sophs. But, they are playing better than most opponents frosh and sophs. Again, relative.
**I agree, there were many missed opportunities to get the ball to Ruth.
Sounds like you actually were in attendance, I’m sure the team appreciates your support.
My enthusiasm for the WBB program may also be relative….relative to Beavs MBB. I simply appreciate the consistent effort and the team play by the gals. I appreciate that even with a substantial lead they didn’t slack off on D.
Whether Rueck was lucky to start with a blank slate or faced a tall hill, I believe his history proves him to be more than a guy who falls into fortunate circumstances.
I’m ready for some baseball, you can have the last word here if you so choose.
Your tone reads oddly. Are you upset with my objectivity?
Yes, it is all relative. Winning is one thing. Being better than most of your opponents and still winning is another. Playing great hoops is something else as well. It’s not necessary in NCAA women’s hoops to do the third in order to do either of the first two. It is necessary on the men’s side for the third to exist in order to just be better than average.
Maybe you caught some of the WVU v. Baylor game today? You would have seen what are probably two of the elite teams in women’s hoops this year, and you still wouldn’t have seen sharp passing or stellar defensive play. But you would have seen discipline and proper placement of both.
I’d like to see Rueck coach the men once CR Is fired/leaves.
It’s a completely different game. Rueck is better at instilling synchronicity and confidence. But the speed, size, talent and recruiting are so vastly different in the two games.
That was 10 innings of bad baseball by the Beavs, starting with the 9th inning meltdown of Thompson. In game 2 the Beavs only had one hit after the second inning when they left the bases loaded. Even though they only had one hit the Wright state pitcher managed to load the bases twice but Beaver hitters never came through. There were more easy fly balls and pop ups by Beaver hitters than I’ve seen in years. Flush this one and let’s get on with Wetzler’s return and hopefully an invigorated Beaver squad.
I’m with you, steve, got to flush this one. Now lets hope the weather holds and a complete game can be won on Sunday. Wetzler has often had somewhat rocky starts, I think Casey will stick with him quite a while unless the wheels completely come off.
Hendrix isn’t gonna be 100% for several weeks, IMHO. Gotta hope Keyes stays hot and that Peterson contributes more. Not much good to say about the BP.

Baseball underway but the stream is intermittent for me. No score through 1.
Beavs don’t take advantage of the Wright st pitcher who loaded the bases with two two out walks but Morrison fouls out to left after taking two strikes.
WRST with an unearned run in t4 to take a 1-0 lead. On a bunt single Wetzler threw the ball by Keyes.
2 BB’s to start the Beavs 4th, got to get runs. This one could easily be shortened by rain.
Way to go Gabe.
Yep, shoulda been bases loaded with nobody out. Instead we get the corners with one out.
Get a run without a hit and have things going in b5
Beavs get two runs but do it without a hit once the bases were loaded. 3-1 Beavs but a miserable offensive performance.
Yeah.. How many bases loaded double plays have they hit into so far this year? Seems like way too many already
Despite giving up a 2b and 1b, Wetzler should be feeling good now, strikes out the side. On to b6 with Beavs up 3-1.
Lets see some offense so as to not waste this opportunity.
Ben pitches himself out of a jam striking out two with runners at the corners after giving up a leadoff double
Beav women win by 23 and finish tied for second in Pac 12. Great accomplishment for a young team that is well coached. I agree with Angry it would be great if Rueck would take over for CR.
WRST walks the bases loaded for the Beavs again. SOMEBODY get a hit.
Wetzler pitch count (about 67) and the poor BP makes me think he has a shot at a complete game, what a way to return! Three more runs would make that scenario likely, I hope. 1 out bases loaded b6.
And, those three runs I wanted come in on a SAC fly, Conforto 2b, and WP.
Hamilton with a sac fly. Two down. Conforto facing a RHP. Finally an RBI double.
WP plates another and Davis HBP. Clark at bat. Balk scores Conforto.
Bloop single scores Davis, 8-1 Beavs. I hope Ben’s arm stays warm through this long inning.
Good thought about the arm; turns out he is OK, side out in order for WRST. On to the b7, bring on the rain!
This game more about the pitching of WRST. 13 BB and 3 HBP as Keyes with the HBP RBI to make it 11-1.
Wind blown fly ball brings in two more. Second inning in a row the Beavs go through the order. 13-1
Wetzler goes 7.2 with 5 Ks, 4 hits and only 1 run
Ucks down 5-3 coming to bat in b9.
Reser again unimpressive, Eden comes on to try to finish.
Eden still disappoints, Beavs win.
In case you missed this impressive result:
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Sophomore Sammy Harrison won the first individual Pac-12 title in Oregon State swimming history Saturday, as she finished first in the 1,650 freestyle at the conference championship meet in Federal Way, Washington. Harrison completed the event with a time of 15:55.57, breaking her own school record by over 20 seconds (16:17.78) and reaching an NCAA A Standard.
Damn! 20 seconds off any PR is really really impressive this late in the season.
I know some people who can’t do a 16 minute mile on dry land, let alone swimming one.
I love watching Moreland play D…there I said it, again.
Beavs lead UCLA 38-29 at the half. Now sit back and watch the beavs give it back with one of their patented 7 minute scoring droughts
Couldn’t have been more accurate, really is pathetic.
It’s not just scoring droughts, though. In most of their losses, the other team is able to score a perverse amount of points in the second half.
anyone else think #12 David Wear is a whiny little bitch? Jesus, every time I see him on TV he’s crying to the refs about something.
yup, seen this movie before. Beavs with an 11 point lead early in the second half and lose by 5. Play hard down the stretch but go 4 min without a FG and miss key FT in the final 2 min.
Isnt this a coaching problem? Seemingly always fading in the second half. The coaches cant make needed adjustments and save a lead……again and again.
nah. couldn’t be that.
Jesus tap-dancing Christ….. I feel like I have seen that game 50,000 times. Just when you think they can’t screw it up. Not another one….
This is also the perfect snapshot into the life as an OSU fan in general across all sports. Except for the asswipes who get excited about gymnastics, or swimming. Just when you start to believe things are going in our favor, we BLOW IT! In football, the term they use is Coug-ing it. Well CR and the boys just Beav-ed it again!
Angry says it’s like Lucy making an ass out of Charlie Brown again and again. One of these days, I’m going to stop trying to kick the football.
Now, now; no need to denigrate the fans of other sports just because MBB is so disappointing. The dedication, discipline and work it takes to be a D-1 swimmer or gymnast is to be admired and likewise those that support them.
You’re not going to be seeing me on any balance beams any time soon. I have an irrational fear of the worst thing that might happen to a man on something like that.
There’s just nothing good that can happen up there.
Hmm . . . OSU men’s basketball surely is disappointing even to asswipes. Does that mean one shouldn’t note Oregon State student athletes who accomplish a first or be impressed with a gymnast’s ability on the high bar? When you can swim a mile in 15 minutes or stand on your hands on a slim rod 8 feet off the ground, let us know. Meanwhile, keep trying to kick that football.
Holy schnikeys Batman!
Is this a uni change designed to make all previous teams’ changes look good? I know I suddenly feel almost lucky to have what we got. It could have been this.
Too funny, I was just going to post and say how fugly they are….
Their original uni’s were cool.
Call me crazy but…..I kinda like them
OT – Funny how close in size Marquis Lee is to Cooks, yet you don’t hear Lee is “undersized” for the NFL. He weighed but 3 lbs heavier than Cooks.
DAT was weak on the bench, 1/2 the reps that Cooks did, his vertical was 4 inches lowe,r and he gives away 15 lbs to Cooks. How the hell did that guy – at 175 lbs – run through OSU tackles in the CW? Oh, wait, that’s right…
In college football, DAT usually looked like the fastest player on the field and I suspect he just didn’t run well. But the physics of him having a full speed, solid contact collision with an NFL player do not favor him. If he’s 174 lbs now, what’s he going to be 12 games into an NFL season? That guy will likely get to enjoy a ridiculous amount of calories…
DeSean Jackson apparently went into the NFL at less than 180, and he’s held up I guess. BTW, there’s speculation out of Philly that the Eagles may look to trade Jackson because he doesn’t fit well with the culture Kelly is trying to build and the Eagles see a lot of WRs to be had in the draft that would be cheaper than Jackson….Maybe Kelly goes for Cooks – similar ability, better teammate. Less expensive.
he’ll be on the IR pretty regularly. Kind of like that other “stud” RB they had a few years ago that was pretty fast.
OT: You gotta to give it up for originality…plus it helps that my wife receives residuals from Speed….
Siskel and Ebert gave it two thumbs up.
Interesting take on NFL rookie salaries and it’s effect on college football. The NCAA is doing enough to destroy college football, they don’t need any help from the NFL. http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-Sports/2014/03/04/Report-NFL-Rookie-Wage-Scale-May-Destroy-College-Football
That might be a little dramatic. A few guys here and there leaving early won’t destroy anything.
Wow! That is a very poorly written article. And it comes with a ton of cookies and malware. Please don’t link to that site anymore. I feel dumber for having read it.
The good news is that I drilled the link they provided to the original article they butchered. This is much better.
I disagree with content. There will be a panic for a couple years while the situation sorts itself out. And it doesn’t help that agents are driving that panic. But the NFL has a finite amount of players. Once it becomes obvious that X% of all the players leaving early don’t get a second contract (as it always has been btw), normalcy shall be regained.
In fact, the opposite of the current panic may become the norm. If there is no more incentive now for 2nd through 7th round pick projections to leave school early, and there is less incentive for the first rounders due to rigid slot monies, then we should be seeing more kids choosing to remain in school. Someone like a Matt Barkley who would have chosen to stay despite top pick hype wouldn’t lose as much if they slid to mid-1st round or second round money.
Agents are going to do what agents do. If the old CBA was still intact, they would be telling kids the same thing and getting them to leave in higher numbers. With less monetary incentive in the new CBA, there is no reason for anyone to assign causation to anything or anyone except for the agents themselves and what they’re now telling kids.
The only causation I can come up with is this:
Agents aren’t making the gobs of 1st round money they once were under the old CBA. So they are now finding ways to supplement lost income. One of those ways is to scare the naive into thinking what this article tries and fails to convey. By turning the NFL draft into the agents’ personal recruiting game, they can bring more talent into their organization and, therefore, have more potential second contracts when they make FA money. Thus, the agents make more on the back end by trying to corner the talent market on the front end.
Ha Ha Jack. I’m surprised you clicked on a link that had “breitbart” in the url.
According to our beat writer, Moore is pitching today. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess he is wrong. One of the frosh?
