Fresno State @ Oregon State

5:35pm. There’s a live stream for all four games on the main site.

Good test for the Beavs (Fresno 7-5 and historically good), who ran up their stats vs Grambling St and Portland. We’ll see if that was them bullying on poor talent, or if they have a legitimate lineup this year. This is Fresno’s first visit to Corvallis since 1952, which is pretty amazing, and only their 6th meeting since 1991.

This series has me a bit worried. Baseball is the king of “regressions toward the mean” — and we know hitting at a .400 clip is unsustainable. Does this mean they hit .200? No. Just that fewer runs and a lower average is probable.

The pitching is starting to get into a groove, but again, vs weak opponents. A 3.83 team ERA is respectable and workable if the offense is truly this dynamic. I’d place the over/under at 2.5, and expect 3 with sound play (D has been shaky), and 2 if they don’t tighten things up.

Go Beavs.

  1. So you’re saying we won’t score 13 runs per game once conference play rolls around, instead settling for 7 to 8 runs per game?

    BORING!

  2. I have a (ESPN) fantasy baseball keeper league that needs a few slots filled, if anyone is interested. We might just need backups for if/when an owner quits, which seems to happen each year. But there might be one or two slots. Draft is looking like March 20. Email me if interested.

    • They weren’t likely to be a #2 seed anyway, but now a #3 seed would be a bit lucky. It’s a shame, it would have been fun to host and go to a couple games next weekend.

The timing of this comment will make it seem like sour grapes, but I’ve always hated the conference tournaments. The Ivy League schools outperform expectations in the tourney because they send their strongest team (i.e., their regular season champion) rather than their hot team du jour.

  3. I was at the game and told my pal “3-4-5? A walk off is preferable…” and Harrison gets ahold of the 1-0 pitch. Go Beavs.

Terrible loss by the Lady Beavs. They should get a 3 seed and still host, but damn. Colorado? They killed them in Boulder a couple weeks ago.

    • You don’t win too often when you go 6-31 from behind the arc. They gifted Colorado a lot of extra possessions in the second half.

      • Yeah, there’s definitely a blueprint to beating the Beavs plus a bit of luck involved. Any team with good athletes or that plays aggressive defense, forces turnovers, and making sure the Beavs hoist up 25 threes or more and make less than 30%. Live by the three, die by the three.

        • Sorry… there is not a women’s team on earth that can force D on treys. There isn’t one if you put all the best defenders on the same team. It’s not gonna happen.

Either we make shots, or we don’t make shots. This is a double-digit win if our kids are on. We went through the sleep thing a couple days ago. Do we need some investigation as to why this one happened?

I think Scott has this one.

  4. Buffs played in-your-face defense. So did Washington & Stanford. Getting hot on 3’s didn’t hurt the Buffs either. Beavs played like they didn’t care.

          • And I really wouldn’t pick on Hamblin that much. CU played around the lane, not in it. That was the fault of everyone on help. You can’t let a high post run to the short corner without help. What kind of hoops is that?

          • The reason that happens, btw, is because you’re overconfident in your abilities. You slam man on the opponent, but they plan a high post iso where the wing clears… there is no help except for the guard up top who just gives a perfunctory wave at the drive as it goes by. What was worse was when another defender was within a couple feet and still made no move to help.

          • “CU played around the lane, not in it.” You are right on there. Funny thing – except not so funny since the Beavs lost – I heard a pre-game interview with Linda Lappe who practically said that was what Colorado would try to do.

      • from the gt:
“Oregon State’s Gabby Hanson was honest on Tuesday when asked if the Pac-12 women’s basketball tournament meant more to other teams that it did for the Beavers.

Maybe, just a little, she said.”

  5. I think we need some music.

    #AmIwrong?

    #hashtagslooksostupid

    #typinghashtagsishardbecauseIhitthespacebareverytimeIcompleteaword…

That fake hashtag was no exception… every word… even though I knew what I was typing.

  6. On the post game Jim Wison said he was going to attend the football practice and would give a report during the baseball broadcast. Jim is also bullish on this baseball club, he thinks there’s a lot of potential even though there’s questions to be answered.

    • more spacious than I expected. Fringe benefit: about a hundred people at any one time out there freeing up better reserved seats. Also the SRO cat walk on either side of the scoreboard is nice. I didn’t know that was in the works. and it’s FREE, though limited to the first 100 folks who get wristbands.

  7. Some interesting news from practice today. Predictions for top 3 QBs?

Coach Andersen said he's seen separation at QB and that position should be narrowed down to 3 guys by Tuesday's practice.— Connor Letourneau (@ConnOregonian) March 7, 2015

Coaches wouldn't specify which QBs were separating themselves, but Baldwin and Andersen were very complimentary of Seth Collins.— Connor Letourneau (@ConnOregonian) March 7, 2015

Coach Baldwin said he's been most impressed with Victor Bolden's consistency. Expects him to be a go-to guy next season.— Connor Letourneau (@ConnOregonian) March 7, 2015

Defense is significantly ahead of the offense at this point. Andersen expressed frustration with the offense not picking things up quicker.— Connor Letourneau (@ConnOregonian) March 7, 2015

    • They have seem enamored with Seth Collins all along, and it’s their guy. Can he throw well enough? That’s my concern on film…Connor needs to scout his throwing ability or get some footage.

      • Look at Utah State in 2011 (Keeton’s freshman year). 282.7 rushing yards a game and only 174.6 passing yards per game. I think if he can’t pass that well, then we will just follow that blueprint.

I’m thinking next year the offense will be almost a complete opposite from what we’re used to with Riley.

        We’re going from a slow-paced pass-heavy* pro-style offense to a uptempo run-heavy spread offense. Should be interesting.

Utah State was the 20th ranked offense that year.

        http://espn.go.com/college-football/statistics/team/_/stat/total/sort/totalYards/year/2011

*Pass heavy for a college team. I actually looked and our Run/Pass ratio last year under Riley and we actually were more balanced than 2/3 of NFL teams. That just goes to show how much of a passing league the NFL is now though. CFB is still dominated by the run game.

        • I’d rather be a running team with an efficient passing game. I do think one deep threat is necessary, and a QB who can make that throw, in order to keep defenses honest, and sometimes late in a game you need that throw. Was Keaton able to pass his freshman year?

If Collins is the best option start him. From what I saw, he was a pretty terrible passer, but maybe they can coach him up quickly.

    • Biggest frustration with Peko is he’s so talented but never gets it done academically. No doubt in my mind if he ever gets on the field he’ll be dominant. But who knows if he ever will at this point.

  8. Oregon State is now locked into the 7 seed at the Pac-12 Tournament. Either get Washington State or Colorado in the first round

  9. http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2015/03/oregon_state_beavers_continue_3.html

    Continue to exceed who’s expectations?

In the season preview I wrote, “I don’t see a championship, but I can see a good season where they finish 3rd in the Pac.”

And that is exactly where they are so far.
    http://www.d1baseball.com/conferences/pac12.htm

I’d say the Beavers are meeting expectations.

Here is my season preview: http://angrybeavs.com/baseball/11031

So far I am wrong on Luke Heimlich. Carey has looked better lately. Things are going as expected from my point of view

    • I think they’ve exceeded early season expectations and especially so after first weekend. Offense has been better so far than I thought they would be at this point. Rotation coming together too. Still not sure on Eckert. He had a nice game but it seems like teams put a lot of good swings together and the defense was great behind him. I think he’ll struggle in conference play. 3rd starter spot and bullpen are the main question marks for me. If they could those spots figured out they can compete with Oregon and UCLA for the conference crown.

  10. Yeskie taking a look at a lot of arms. Mets on for Bauer. Pitches to one batter (pops out on sac attempt) and gives way to Church.

  11. Gabe Clark is hammering the baseball this season. Came close to hitting it out to dead center at Goss which I can’t remember ever seeing.

  12. Chat was pretty quiet for today’s game, I’m slightly surprised. I learned two important things today. First, my pale winter skin was NOT ready for today’s sun as I am now FRIED. Second, who is that dude who literally walks back and forth yelling random stuff the entire game? Pretty damn hilarious. I picture that’s what whiskey is like in person after he’s had one too many lol
