  1. Big John Pomeroy off to a disappointing start, doesn’t seem to be fooling anyone, throws a WP/PB (stats show WP, Jay calls PB), and a HBP on a 0-2 count.
It’s early, but not seeing any change from last season; control issues, HBP, and WP.

    • Pomeroy is more of a thrower than a pitcher. He can throw hard but doesn’t have good control and his secondary pitches weren’t good last year and it seems like the case again. This part of the game is a concern for the Beavers with so many young guys. Gonna need someone to step up and get the ball to Engelbrekt and Hickey. Don’t want to overwork those 2 before the postseason.

      • That was Cole Irvin. He also made it clear that the quackers would only need to score 2-3 runs this year; I guess that means that the Beavs would have pretty easily beaten them today?

Steal anything but a victory from the ucks?….no thanks!

  2. Madrigal off to a great start, 4-4 with a run scored and 2 RBI. Grenier didn’t have an official AB but walked 3 times. KJ came to bat with runners on 3 times but only made one count (that I heard), 1-5 with a run scored and 2 RBI and struck out twice.

    • I know we are on the pac 12 men’s refs in basketball but wow these Women basketball refs seem to be worse Beavers up 30-50 into the 3:30ish to play in the 3rd

      • They’re gonna have to find a way to beat Stanford on the farm next Friday. Even if they win Sunday. ASU finishes the season at UCLA and that’s probably the only team that has a chance to give them a loss. Win out of course and everything takes care of itself. I’m confident they’ll send the seniors out in style against UCLA and get some payback for that 20 point beatdown in LA

      • Very possible. They are playing their best basketball of the season right now. Last year’s team kind of peaked in January and sputtered out to end. It may be different this year. Beat Stanford down there and this team has a lot of upside come March.

        • They are peaking at the right time. They seem to be getting better over the last 8-10 games. Last year they peaked mid season then kind of got complacent. I’m not a big women’s sports fan (except beach volleyball) but they are fun to watch.

      • Elite Eight, just because there is this glass ceiling that exists in women’s basketball so much. I can’t see them beating UConn, South Carolina, or Baylor. Notre Dame on a neutral court maybe…just because they almost beat ND at their place without Syd.

But they are in prime position to win important games one after the other. They are making easy work of teams with great athleticism right now, and are executing at a terrific level. UCLA and Stanford are the last “important” games left. This team last year didn’t have the resolve to win important games, but this team this year has so much more guts and better leadership. I’m loving what I’m seeing, and I hope you’re right.

  3. Here is a tweet from Max Engelbrekt, “I hadn’t played in a game in over 21 months. Didn’t know if I’d ever play again. Today was pretty cool.”

And pretty cool too is his handle, simply: @maxengelbrekt

      • Thanks angry.

If ab stands for at bats how is that different from bf (batters faced? This pitching box score has both of them.

FWIW I’ve done some searching on reading box scores and so far haven’t found a one that has ab as one of the pitching stats. They have ab as one of the hitting stats but not the pitching.

        TIA

        • Batters faced means someone stepped into the batter’s box, point blank. At-bat means it ended with a hit or putout if I’m not mistaken. A walk, hit batsman, catcher’s interference, fielder’s choice, or caught stealing does not count as an at-bat. So a guy who has two hits, comes up to the plate twice, and walks in 2-3 with a BB; 4 plate appearances or 4 times facing the pitcher.

        • At bats don’t include walks, hit batsmen, sacrifices, etc. That’s the case for both pitchers and hitters.

For pitchers, batters faced includes…well, every batter they’ve faced. The hitters equivalent is plate appearances.

  4. FWIW

About the only rap I’ve ever seen on Casey has to do with allowing high pitch counts.

I see for his first game of the year Rasumssen’s pitch count was 98. Way back when I used to listen to professional baseball broadcasts and there was always an awareness of how many pitches a pitcher had thrown. Usually when the count got up near 100 the pitcher was replaced.

I’m not referring to spring training games, I’m talking about the regular season. In spring games they were taken out long before their pitch count got anywhere near 100 and I’m talking about pitchers who, for the most part were full grown men, not teenagers.

I realize that since Casey managed two national champions he can do no wrong but……….

  5. My Golden Rodents had their way with UVS and burnt through a bunch of their pitchers, so I’m expecting a batting practice type win unless there is a total pitching melt down by da Beav’s.

    • Beavgopher:

Where does your ultimate loyalty lie between the two alma maters? Who’ll you be pulling for in the impending Rodent Civil War next September?

    • In the pregame Casey thought Jake was throwing well this spring but it all depended on his confidence and being able to hit the zone… well Jake couldn’t find the zone.

      • Jake had some good moments 2 years ago but control has always been a major weakness with him. He’s talented but sometimes guys just never put it together

  6. Keeping Thompson in there is just punting this game. Beavers have a lot of games coming up in the next week but leaving Thompson in makes no damn sense.

  7. Beavs had runners at the corners with one out but Nobach is run down on a ground ball to 3b. KJ to the plate with two on and two out, and fails to deliver, striking out.

  8. T4 and everyone in the UVS lineup has a hit. b2b singles open the T4. I think I’ll check back later and see if Casey found anybody that can pitch.

  9. So why is pitching such an issue lately? Last year I thought it was bad when we had no bullpen, but that’s not as bad as having no starters

    • Rasmussen will be fine and will be very good. Heimlich stepping up would be huge for this team. He was so-so against righties, if his changeup and fastball command have improved, he could be very good as a starter. Jake Thompson should just sit in the bullpen and not pitch unless it’s a blowout. A lot of unknowns with this team as far as pitching goes but I won’t say they’re bad there until we have a larger sample size to see with this group.

      • We have been spoiled the last few years. Travis was the guy I was worried about this year. He always seemed to be living on the edge last year.

        • Beavers seemingly have a game like this early on every year. They lost to SDSU 18-2 and San Diego 13-2 in back to back days 4 years ago and everyone freaked out and then the Beavers went out and won 40 games. A lot of young guys and guys adjusting to new roles and Casey trying to see who is and who isn’t ready to contribute. Not a total shock they’re having a bad game early on. They’ll figure it out

  10. Great that Oregon State offered Alex Forsyth. I personally know him and he is a great dude. He lost his father in the 8th grade in a shooting at the clackamas town center.

  11. Holy shit………..11-2 now, really? Got to keep that Beav sports tradition, remember CR’s hoops team lost to these guys also. UVSU hasn’t been any good since 2012 when they got some national publicity for winning 32 games in a row, but they still didn’t make the playoffs.

  12. Starting to turn into a bitterbeaver. It’s either disappointment with the good programs lately (BWBs possibly notwithstanding, but we’ll see how they do in the postseason), or the kind of overachieving that gets us a CBI invite. Good grief, I need a beaverbreak!

  13. And now it’s 11-8 and we have a game. Hitting will not be an issue for this team. They’ll score some runs, just need solid pitching.

  14. If Oregon St. Is going to beat UO tonight in hoops they have to force Oregon to take contested lower odds shots. 3 pointers shouldn’t even be allowed to be gotten off because if UO makes 4 or more it can easily cause a loss. Payton can’t get too careless with fouls but main thing is make them work for shots and not take 3’s without a guy all up in the Oregon player’s snatch. Prevent those shots from even being taken and OSU won’t have to worry about them being made.

Go Mammoths. Quit waiting for a better moment or another time. Take the doggone game.

    • Mid range shots are the key. Oregon State will be able to turn Oregon over imo. Olaf honestly shouldn’t even play tonight. He’s useless. GR should play a lot. I’d go small with Tinkle at the 4 a lot and see if he can get Dillon Brooks in foul trouble. If Brooks struggles at all, Oregon loses. I think the Beavers got a chance at getting a huge win. They match up well but who knows if they show up in a road game

  15. As I said, to criticism from some AB dork, you can determine the outcome in the 1st inning most of the time by which pitcher throws the ball better.

      • Yes, the long rope, but I’d say Casey threw the game by giving Thompson the start. They would have been much better going with anyone else or a committee. Casey thought, “Oh Utah Valley I can throw Thompson and get away with it.” No. Thompson is HORRIBLE. And he has proven that as fact over and over. Casey with another bad move, but we’re told we’re not allowed to question Casey. What the fuck ever. That is 101 stuff.

          • Even if true, doesn’t matter. If a guitarist shreds the Eruption solo in his bedroom, then flubs notes when on stage, the owner should not bring him back. Pat Casey is a meh. His decisions have been getting worse and worse over the years.

  16. Gopher facts:
    Three national championships in ’56, ’60, and ’64. CWS in 56, 60, 64, 73. and 77
    24 B1G championships
Three coaches in the HOF including current head man John Anderson
Famous alums: HOFers Paul Molitor, Dave Winfield, and current Twins closer Glen Perkins
Jerry Kindall, the guy that turned AZ into a national power and won three national championships, was a SS on the ’56 Gopher national championship team coached by his mentor, Dick Seibert.
Dave Winfield is the only player to be named the CWS MOP for a non winning team.
Siebert Field, the Goph’s home, also has a railroad track running past the left field fence.

  17. Eckert follows up a terrible Jake Thompson start with one of his own. Eckert has below average stuff and it has been exposed time and time again. No idea why Pat starts him. He is bad.

    • He isn’t and hopefully Pat sees this. Heimlich is better than him even though I’m not a huge fan of his yet. Scotland Church might be worth a shot in the rotation. He wasn’t great yesterday, walked too many guys, he is rarely squared up though and that includes last year. If they can work on some of his mechanics to throw more strikes, he could be good there

    • I forget which pitchers they signed in the latest recruiting class, but I remember a few looked intriguing. Have to think a young guy can step up and be better than Thompson. Eckert isn’t great, but he’s not as bad as Thompson. I realize Thompson was due to 4 games and not a normal starter, but he can’t start again ever.

Right now Ras, Heim, Eck should be the rotation, then allow a young guy opportunity to step up.

      • Eckert walks less guys than Thompson but really isn’t better. 11 hits in 4+ against a Minnesota squad that isn’t that good is pretty terrible and a lot of XBH. He can’t be started against Pac-12 squads

        • What was his Pac-12 ERA last year? I don’t remember him being awful…maybe he was. He’s better than Thompson for sure, though. I don’t like him, but he’s better than Thompson is all I’m saying. I hope someone young steps up. I don’t know who it would be.

          • Oregon State doesn’t have his Pac-12 numbers up on their site, but he did give up 4+ runs in a game in about half of his starts and got yanked early a ton cause he was getting torched and then got killed in the regional. His numbers against the bottom of the conference teams were fine but he couldn’t get hitters out on good teams.

        • Gophers should have shot at making the tourney if things break right. B1G had five in last year.
They do not have near the talent as the Beavs, but they have some good players with experience.
John Anderson is a great coach and they are getting back their pitching coach, Todd Oakes, who is excellent, after missing the better part of the last couple years with lymphoma.

  18. Pomeroy put in the game in a high leverage situation and fails. Again. Casey and Yeskie love this guy and he’s never proven he could get guys out. Might cost Oregon State the game

  19. Hooray for the young position players. On the other hand Hamilton is again below the Mendoza line (but the dinger was nice) and KJ is batting .214 and has 7 runners LOB in the 3 games.

But it’s not how you start…

  20. Hip-Hip-Horray for little noted (at least here) Beav softball @ 10-1, gymnastics defeating Cal, wrestlers dominating Boise State. The kids on these teams don’t have the NFL/NBA/MLB dreams of main stream sports so their equally hard scholarship work is for personal and school pride. You can’t have enough HHHs for that.

          • “Hi I’m Billy Mays here for Hip Hip Away. Ever have a coach that just doesn’t give a shit? Maybe he lacks football comprehension and leaving a stain on your alma mater? Just blast that stain with Hip Hip Away. Proven to make him smell like corn, so some dumbfucks from the Midwest get duped into taking him off your hands. That’s right with the amazing power of Hip Hip Away your problems will disappear.”

  21. Umm, OK to mention WBB here?
Turnovers is getting to be a trademark of this team, as is coming out of the half more focused. Nice shot of Mandy at the end of the first half. Good gals up 38-29 about 3 mins into the second half.

  22. Women’s hoops in the driver’s seat. One last big game against Stanford at their place. After that, the conference tourney that really doesn’t mean all that much, because with just marginal performance (win in first round, lose in second) they have a 2 seed and the 7th overall in the NCAAs and are hosting regardless.

    • Worried that there’s going to be an intensity drop at Stanford after beating back the UCLA demon. Furd almost won here, and they are probably going to be better down there. No time to be celebrating yet! Not to mention Cal…

      • Part of me is worried about Cal more than Furd just because Cal is younger, hungry, and since we spanked them when they were here they might walk in thinking they’re getting the victory no problem. Trap game alert if they aren’t conscious that ASU wants the title as much as they do.

They’ll [Cal] be very good in the future, and Kristine Anigwe is conference freshman of the year. I think the girls get up for Furd.

  23. is there an app out there that reports beavers baseball scores? I like the way the yahoo app gives me alerts for the finish of beaver basketball and football games, just wish it did college baseball.

    • As far as I know, none of the major sports score apps provide baseball scores. I have the D1 baseball score page saved to my phone and reference that although it’s isn’t updated constantly so I’ll usually keep the stattracker up when a game is on.

  24. Big time start from Luke today. Beavers badly needed a guy to step up and get the job done and he has today. He’ll be the #2 starter come Pac-12 time. Won’t be able to make that change for a couple weeks with the Beavers on a short week this week, so it will be a slow change but just a matter of time with him. Impressive today. Biggest thing that’s been impressive with Heimlich is his control and getting a lot of swing and misses. Those were the things missing last year but understandable given how young he was.

  25. This Beavers team can flat out mash. Insane to think that Grenier, Madrigal, Harrison will all be back next season and they’re already so damn good

  26. Logan Ice with a home run from the right side and nearly hit a grand slam from the left side but did get a 3 run triple and it happened in the same inning. 8-0 Beavs

    • I think by may Martinek takes over the #3 spot. He’s big time, just hasn’t been healthy but appears he’s about ready to go. Him and Drew probably have the most talent among guys who can start. he’ll be eased back into things but later in the season he’ll be a big time contributor imo

  27. On to the 7th, Luke has thrown 82 pitches. What is gained by leaving him in? At some point use a game like this to work the pen….got to find arms there.

    • I wonder if other schools are mentioning OSU pitch counts when they’re recruiting pitchers?

Just a WAG on my part but perhaps that’s why UO has such a strong pitching staff? “Come and play for us and we’ll protect your arm instead of destroying it like some other coaches do”.

  28. Well they obviously should have won all 4 games this weekend. Casey pretty much threw everyone in the mix hitting and pitching. Similar set up next weekend. 4 games. The lineup should settle down a little bit.

    Good weekends –
The offense. Madrigal and Grenier were pretty much as advertised. It will be hard to keep Morrison, Madrigal, Harrison and Grenier down for an entire game.

    Bad weekends –
Almost all the pitching. Heimlich had a good start. No one else could say they had a good weekend.

    Earned more playing time –
Anderson – A bit of a surprise. We’ll see next weekend if he can keep producing.

    Earned less playing time –
    Gillette
Pomeroy – Hopefully he can step up his game or he’ll only see mop up time.

I expect the infield to solidify with Grenier, Morrison, Madrigal and Harrison. I see Donahue mostly in the outfield or DHing with Hamilton occasionally getting some PT. Nobach will be the only everyday OF unless Anderson keeps up his numbers.

    • In the video it seemed to me there were a number of completions where the receiver didn’t have to break stride where as in other videos of other QBs the receiver had to slow down and wait for the ball. In other words they outran the QB’s arm.

Maybe his receivers aren’t as fast but that didn’t seem to be the case.
