8pm on Pac-12 ESPNU.

The Beavs don’t play well on ESPNU, in general, and then there’s the fact everyone is chalking up the home games as automatic wins. The Beavs could get ambushed if they don’t come out ready to play from the start. Energy levels early in games have been poor and concerning. Payton needs to score more.

I know there are sites putting the Beavs in the tourney, but I still think they need to win the next four games to guarantee that. 3 out of 4 will put them on the cusp, and I thinkĀ  USC is the best shot at a road win. Nothing has changed of late, and I think the slow starts and eyeball test say NIT team, so I expect some tripping up down the stretch, but we’ll see.

Go Beavs.

  1. See, I think UCLA is the best chance at a road win, at least the way they’ve been playing. USC shellacked UCLA at Pauley fwiw. Although it was early in the season. SC also beat UCLA at home by 20, so I view USC as the bigger threat.

But first things first, let’s worry about UDub. I think they can be really good, and this will be a test to see if our guys can start well and finish well, and stave off the runs that UDub can and will make. They play the 5th fastest adjusted tempo, so they are tryna run. In addition to that, they have pretty good shooting, and their backcourt will challenge ours. Andrews vs. Payton will be entertaining. Both sets of bigs are raw. Tres is the best wing in this game, but Thybulle is very athletic and will give Tres problems. I think we have the coaching edge.

I think we win this game. Kenpom has us winning by 5, 80-75 (http://gamepredict.us/kenpom?team_a=Washington&team_b=Oregon%20St.&neutral=false). Should be fun no matter what.

    • put GP2 on Andrew Andrews and shut him down and they’ll win. Whiskey will be in attendance with one of his mini me degenerates both games this week. Beavs are undefeated this season at home when that happens. 2-0. Take that to the bank

    • They are turning basketball into the football bowl debacle. Everyone gets a participation trophy, don’t want to hurt anybody fellings…….oh and ad money….lots and lots of ad money.

  2. Pretty solid first half. Washington can’t continue to drain 3’s all game… can they?? Beavs have been clutch to match every run. Hopefully they can pull away in the second.

    • the close out on the 3 point shooters has been a little suspected I think but I’m sure this will be addressed at half time we can hope at least

  3. 2nd half adjustments

Keep attacking. Get to the rim, Get to the free throw line. Don’t look for threes. Keep punching.

On defense, get back in transition. Contest and rebound.

  4. Surprised we have a lead. Hopefully Washington cools off in the 2nd half. Happy to see the refs not calling a foul on every other possession.

Do they show the 1-877-Kars 4 Kids commercial out there in Oregon? It’s on during every commercial break on the east coast. This fucking commercial makes me want to stab something.

  5. Hate to have to say it but bears repeating: if Olaf can’t consistently knock down open 3’s, why does he Get so much pt?

Olaf reminds me of his character the snowman: moves like his legs are frozen, his defensive pressure is soft like snow. Wayne must envision him playing well, but I wish that he’d Let It Go!
    Sorry all, practicing daughter humor

  6. I was about to talk shit about Schaft passing up open looks. He’s scared and doesn’t want the game in his hands. Ugh. Then he drills a 3. Oh well. I still won’t miss him next year.

  7. This team defensively has regressed so much. Doesn’t reflect well on the head coach. Getting outcoached by Lorenzo Romar is also a very bad look.

  8. Beavers should be up 15+. Destroying UW on the boards and +10 from the foul line but they don’t defend at all and have given UW great looks all night and it has led to UW having a chance to steal this game. I’ll be surprised if they don’t lose

  9. This is a prime example of what Robinson left for this program. Olaf and Reid are absolute liabilities on the court and if they can’t knock down 3’s or free throws, of course you’re going to lose the lead, and in turn, the game. I’m excited for the future, but I think this year is more of an eye opener of what true talent (our freshman) is compared to what we’re piecing together.

    • Wayne is choosing to play these guys for the minutes they’re playing. They were good defensively last year with Craig’s recruits and horrible this season with the only change being Wayne’s recruits. He is the one who sticks with the zone that’s killing them defensively. Craig failed as a coach but Wayne deserves a ton of criticism for losing games like this

        • And I do agree about the defensive. We haven’t closed out on shooters all year and that is an area to be addressed, but I still stand by the pathetic personnel.

          • And didn’t the Beavs have one of the best 3 point defenses in the nation last year? I seems to me WT has traded defense for offense this year. It has worked to some degree, but the freshmen need to get better next year. They won’t have Payton to fall back on.

      • I disagree, respectfully. It has nothing to do with the win or loss outcome (which was a hell of win), but just the fact that those guys can’t be relied upon for the simple things they’re being relied upon for. The only reason they’re playing is because there aren’t freshman at those positions to replace them yet. Next year will be awesome.

        • I think the Beavers should play pretty small and slide Tinkle over to the 4 and have a center rotation of Eubanks and Rakocevic. Give LMW spot time off the bench and just not play Reid and Olaf. They kill the team and have no value. Wayne should be seeing this by now

  10. Beavers stunk it up at the foul line and deserved to be criticized for that but their defense lost them the game tonight. 57% from the field and 46% from three for UW is unacceptable.

  11. That’s the kind of win that gets players thinking it’s a magic season. It will be interesting to see how the next three play out after that.

    • I don’t know, they still need to beat the LA schools on the road for me to have any belief. What a weird game. If you told me UW would shot 57% and the Beavs would go almost 10 minutes without a FG in the second half, you would think it would have been an 80-60 blowout loss. They still need to beat the Cougs also. I’m not counting anything with this team.

  12. It seemed like a huge brain fart for the Fuskies to let STJ get the ball so easily on the play. I was thinking shit at least he’s going to get a shot off that’s not 40 feet from the basket. Thanks, UDub

  13. first off……………Andrew Andrews is a fucking punk. That entire Husky team is full of punks. And their coach is a big fucking asshole punk to boot. With that out of the way………………..

How in the fuck do you out rebound your opponent by double digits and have 15 offensive rebounds to your opponents 2 and almost lose? By not playing defense or making free throws. If the Beavs had done either of those two they would have ran them out of the gym. First half was either a dunk or an uncontested wide open 3 by UW. Then the officials decide to start calling way more fouls in the 2nd half and made it completely unwatchable. UW players grabbed, held, pulled and pushed all game long and weren’t even called for half of it. Fitting that ST Jr travels then hits the game winner. Hopefully that is the final nail in their NCAA tournament hopes coffin. Either way I honestly hope the ducks butt fuck them all the way back to Seattle on Sunday. Just honestly could not believe some of the extra curricular bullshit that team pulls.

Olaf? What can I say. For every 3 he made, he made up for it by not playing defense and even throwing the ball away on an inbounds pass not once, but twice! It really seems that there’s always someone on the floor for the Beavs who is a liability in some way at all times.

In the end, fuck the huskies, fuck their punk players, punk ass coach and punk ass fans. Eat a sack of shit Romar. But in all seriousness, I hope UW signs him to lifetime contract. Do less with more Romar.

    • I’m only exaggerating a little, but almost on every opponent dunk Olaf was just standing there watching. He get’s beat baseline when it looks like the player has no place to go. He closes on three’s always a second late. I don’t get it. WT watches film, right? Does he have some secret way of ranking his players that we layman do not understand?

      • UW first two dunks of the game were due to Olaf losing track of who his responsibility was in the zone. Honestly I think they need to scrap this zone bs. Because for the most part tonight it was not good. Which has been the case quite a bit this season in conference play

    • How is Andrews a punk?? He’s a great kid who already has his degree and made some phenomenal shots (including the 60 footer that didnt count at the end of the first half).

      • “Heā€™s a great kid who already has his degree and made some phenomenal shots (including the 60 footer that didnt count at the end of the first half).”

Cool story. So he gets his shit done in the class room (hopefully on his own but it is UW and Romar so…………) and can make some tough, clutch shots. Were you at the game in person to witness his play and behavior? I think others in attendance that were paying attention would back this up.

I stand by what I wrote. Punk. That entire team and head coach.

        • I haven’t missed a game in years. What about his play said punk to you? He mugged the student section one time after hitting the deep 3 and pushed off a couple times. Same stuff we’re okay with Stevie for doing?

          • Whiskey, while being a little brash, is correct. AA’s behavior was punkish. I’m guessing you weren’t close enough to the court to hear the words he was saying to Stevie at the end of the game. He was right in Stevie’s face with that shit, even bending over to get up in his face when Stevie leaned over to ignore the punk.

            Justice was served.

  14. I got to go to the game visiting from maui and just have to say so proud to be a beaver. My girl was with me and told me she sees why im such a beav fan. Shes from seattle (not a huge sports fan) and we were next to huskies and said our fans r so much better. So happy to be around fellow beavs for such an amazing moment. Go beavs! P.s. play the freshman

  15. Saw the final play again. Super-travel, but I’ll take it. Everyone’s been a beneficiary and a victim of bad PAC reffing throughout the year, so hey

  16. Historic win in that we’ll all remember it for years and years! And yeah…. Olaf and Jarmal don’t play position D, they play P.O.S. Defense. What a couple of losers

  17. I don’t know why everyone’s making a big deal about the “travel” It didn’t look to bad to me. I saw a story on Yahoo about it this morning.

Sometimes you need calls like agaisnt Utah and last night to go your way during a season.

Looking ahead, is anyone else surprised how uncompetitive Washington State is? Just goes to show the difference a coach makes. Under Bennett, WSU was contending for Pac12 championships, under Kent they can’t even keep it close! Was surprised at first when Oregon let him go, but they’ve been better without him too.

Over/under 1.5 more years for Kent at WSU?

    • Ernie’s doing a great job! Some people look at the 1-15 conference record and balk, but they’re forgetting how tough the Pac-12 is. Cougs just need to impose their will in the conference tournament, and they’ll be headed to the NCAAs! If they fire Kent, they’ll be making a huge mistake! It takes 10 years to turn a program around. Coaches like us just can’t get a fair shake

  18. He does shuffle his feet, but in real time it doesn’t look bad.

The defense is concerning 91 and 81 in the last two games. That is the first win they have giving up 80 + pts. Its a tough decision, but it seems like the defense is focusing more on steals (letting the defender go by and looking for strip). They need to play in front more and contest the shots better. The 3 pt defense is collapsing too much making it difficult to run out on shooters. I would rather have them stay down and in their defense position rather than run out and have the shooter ball fake and dribble right around them. Make them take a longer lower percentage shot. Their defense often times leaves them out of position. Eubanks had good game and he is going to keep developing.

    • Funny how everyone always points to the last missed call in a game and ignores the plethora of missed or bad calls breaking both ways the other 39 minutes

    • He walked. Everyone walks now. If you’re not me, you don’t care.

edit: Here’s a neato project. Go find all the Kobe and LeBron footage you can. Then tell me what travelling means to you.

I know I’ve said this here before. But there was one week many years ago when two of the “top plays” of the week were of Kobe and LBJ respectively. They showed Kobe dribbling to the left side of the lane and taking five steps in a zig-zag fashion before laying it in.

I can score on anyone if I get five steps.

Better still, LBJ gets a call where he just barrels down the lane (as he is wont to do) with four steps before he is touched by someone. That someone gets called for a foul, and then LBJ proceeds to take three more steps and a lay-in for continuation.

Beauty was once in the eye of the beholder. It’s marketed now.

  19. Who was the UW Fan decked out in UW gear with court side seats ? He was sitting 2 seats down from Gary SR. Who is giving up court side seats to a opposing team fans ? Shame on them .

    • I saw him talking to Gary’s buddy that’s always at games with him so I would guess that he’s a friend of theirs. He looked suspiciously similar to Venoy Overton but thought that dude was in jail for several crimes, including being a pimp …

  20. Rankings update –

    RPI – 28
    BPI – 65
    KenPom – 65
    Jeff Sagarin – 62

Moved from the edge of the bubble to right on top of it. I wouldn’t lean so heavily on the RPI since all the other ratings have the Beavs in the 60s.

    Most recent bracketology predictions –
ESPN – Out – Probably bumped up to first 4 out after last night.
CBS – In. It does account for last night’s win.
USA Today – In. Accounts for last night’s win.
Wash Post – In. Does not account for last night’s win.
    SB Nation – In.
    Bracket Project – In

    • Historically, the committee values RPI and SOS over everything. When the media did a mock NCAA tournament selection at NCAA’s headquarters, they spoke with committee members and Oregon State was really liked as a tournament team and that was before OSU even got a road conference win. I think the committee likes them based on what they’ve done against RPI top 50 teams and because they scheduled Valpo and Kansas in the nonconference. Big boost over other bubble teams.

If the Beavers beat Wazzu and split in LA, I think they’re getting in as a 10 seed. Everyone but Lunardi has them in and it seems like he’s trying to push teams who don’t have a shot. Butler is not making it with an RPI worse than 55. It just ain’t gonna happen. Oregon State has every edge over Butler and OSU has the #1 SOS in college basketball, compared to 89 from Butler. If it comes down to those 2 for the final spot, the Beavers will get in.

      • I agree if they beat WSU and get a road win they’re probably in. I don’t think beating WSU gets them in, but maybe it does depending what they do in the pac tourney and how the committee feels about osu not making it since 1990. Maybe that will work in their favor b/c OSU would be a story.

        • Yeah, I wonder if the 25 year drought story works in our favor at all.

That being said, the WSU game scares me. Beavs have been extremely fortunate the last two weeks. I can totally see a fail coming Sunday.

          • I think the story definitely plays a role. They say they don’t care when putting teams in about that stuff but I think they do. If Oregon State beats Wazzu and then beats USC, they’re in great shape. Even a UCLA win will work and get them just in. They’ll play WSU close cause they never do anything easy, but I don’t think they lose at home to them. That will set up the monster final week for them. A split down there and I like their chances. Probably sets up an OSU-Stanford game in the Pac-12 tourney and as long as they don’t lose that, they’d be in

      • That thinking is long gone. Colorado St was 29th in RPI last year. Didn’t make it in.

Direct quote last year from Scott Barnes the selection committee chair
“We look at RPI really as an organizer in terms of top 50 and 100, but we spent a lot of time, more time than I remember, in comparing (RPI) in the swings to metrics such as the Sagarin, Ken Pom, BPI,” Barnes said. “Those are used in the room as well and talked about quite extensively. We review those metrics each week, and that carried over to this week.”

        http://www.coloradoan.com/story/sports/csu/mens-basketball/2015/03/15/colorado-state-ncaa-tournament-rpi/24829067/

        • Agree. I think the “neat story” of not having made it since 1990 carries more weight than RPI. They hold their own fate, so just win the games and the rest will take care of itself.

        • Well, CSU didn’t make it cause their SOS was 119th and they had 2 wins against the RPI top 50. That hurt them more than anything and why their RPI was thrown out along with the conference they played. The Beavers have 6 wins in the RPI top 50, #1 ranked SOS and play in one of the conferences in college basketball. That’s the big difference between the comparison.

    • To me these rankings are fun to read, but bullshit in some ways because things change after another game. If I’m looking long range, Beavs will be favored against WSU and underdogs down in LA. 17-12 going in to the P-12 tournament is the most likely possibility. Unless they win the tourney they will have 13 losses. The question to ask all the experts is……”do the Beavs get in with 13 losses”? I don’t know the answer to that, but it would seem to be doubtful.

  21. Schaft and Reid are net negative….unbelievable! Can’t wait to see someone replace them who can contribute net positive, even if minimal gain. Probably 8-10 turnovers between those two.

  22. Glad I watched it live. “It’s a miracle.”
GP 2 for all his great attributes, is weak at the end of the games on the FT line. GP 0-2 is his new moniker.
Reid and Olaf were so bad it almost seemed they were throwing the game.
Why didn’t LMW play? He would have seemed to be a better matchup with UW players?
Tinkle kept Drew on the bench way too long in the second half.
UW has some serious frosh talent. Good thing Romar is the coach, or they could be dangerous in the coming years.
Weisner should show the boys how to shoot FT’s. That was a disgrace. They deserved to lose.

    • By the end of the game GP2’s shoulders are probably weighted down from carrying the team. As a person who turned off the game with the Beavs down 6 and seemingly done, I remember Reid missing a bunch of FTs -not just 1 or 2 toward the end that wouldn’t have made the heroics necessary.

    • LMW is kind of getting the shaft a bit. He could have been a contributor this year. I get it…build on the young guys who have a higher ceiling, but I think he’s played well enough to see the court more than the 1-2 minutes he got.

    • LMW is kind of getting the shaft a bit. He could have been a contributor this year. I get it…build on the young guys who have a higher ceiling, but I think he’s played well enough to see the court more than the 1-2 minutes he got.

    • NCAA rules say they can’t overturn a result after the game has been completed. Same thing happened earlier this season in a game that Boise got hosed in. Result won’t change even though Romar has a good reason to be upset.

  23. “Update 3:38 p.m.: The Pac-12 has released the following statement regarding Washington’s protest of its loss to Oregon State: “While an institution may ask the Conference Office to review plays, there is no protest policy. Washington has inquired with the Conference Office regarding play in the final moments of its game with Oregon State. In reviewing the final sequence of play in the Oregon State-Washington game, it was determined that the clock timing was handled appropriately by the game officials and the clock operator. While it was questioned whether the Oregon State player should have been called for traveling prior to the final shot, traveling is a judgment call. Traveling is a non-reviewable judgment call.”

    http://mynorthwest.com/404/2920626/Lorenzo-Romar-Huskies-protest-Oregon-State-loss-to-Pac12

    • it was determined that the clock timing was handled appropriately by the game officials and the clock operator

How? It didn’t start until almost a second had passed.

      • Who cares? No matter if they said it was handled incorrectly, the game stands as called. If it was traveling (which it my have been) the ref was literally staring at his feet and didn’t call it. #ohwell.

        • I care. They said it was handled appropriately after watching the tape, so I care on the level that they’re passing off an obvious error as the appropriate call. Everyone should care about that.

          • I guess they’re seeing something your not, I don’t know. They may have procedures for situations like this, perhaps a predetermined amount of delayed time between the button push once the ball is received on the inbound and when the clock runs! At least they are not waffling on the decision like the MWC. Do you really want them to review ever facet of the game? Look at the NFL, and their “every play goes thru the review booth”. They fuck up calls just as much as they did before, and Its made it unwatchable.

      • That is wholly untrue.

I watched that play first when I got home because Romar threw a complete shit fit after the shot went in, and nobody knew what the hell was going to be called because of it. Thankfully, the refs finally blew the whiner off. And the TV broadcast did an excellent job of covering all angles and clock management. If the clock started late, it was by less than one-tenth of one second. His first dribble landed just as the clock hit 3.2 seconds… on the broadcast overlay as well as the full court angle where the top of the board was shown.

I can’t see the ESPN vid because of browser settings, but the description is criminal. Not starting until he reaches half court? That is a flat out bold face type lie. He had three dribbles before half court, and the clock started before his first dribble.

        • Now, someone is saying that Olaf traveled on the baseline prior to in-bounding to STj.

Seems like no one wants the Beavs to win this game….

          • I saw that reference this morning too.

In real time, at the game, I didn’t see the travel, couldn’t see the clock start a millisecond slow, or see Olaf move.

Maybe from different angles and with slow motion some of those things become more evident. I saw angles where the travel is a travel but another angle it’s not apparent and certainly not obvious.

At this point it’s all sour grapes. The Pac has said there is no policy for protest. In any event the outcome won’t change and there is no grand scheme or cabal conspiring against udumb so it seems past time to just let it go.

You can’t limit the minutiae of counting hanging chads on the last 3+ seconds only.

Nitpicking the things that *could* have changed the outcome is fine, only if you want to go back through the ENTIRE game and nitpick every possible: travel, every inbounds for player movement, every clock start/stoppage, every possible ticky tack foul/non-foul, call/no-call. For the entirety of play.

Then I guess we can forget about sports results at all and wait for the final score to be explained to us the day after an event we all watched live. Can’t wait for that.

    • This one wasn’t as bad as the other. In the first one, he leg whipped the kid. Say what you want about Reid, he was stealth. Grayson is a shitty little punk.
