FB spring practice begins + general thread

345

Spring practice begins Tuesday, what are you looking for over the next several weeks? Share, not only your expectations, but any sources others may miss. I expect Eggers will have something worthwhile and there is always the GT; will Mama M and the paywall ilk have more?

Aside from QB and a new center it looks like most attention will go to the defense. New faces there to evaluate and ya gotta wonder if Elu will be in better condition (didja know, even overweight, he lead the DL in tackles last season?).

BTW, the “First Ever Beaver Combine” was open to the public, anyone go? The team tweeted out combine results here: https://twitter.com/@BeaverFootball

An open practice is set for April 13 at Mountainside HS (Beaverton-Sherwood) and the Spring Game a week later at Reser. Share your observations with your fellow degenerates right here.

General stuff OK too, WBB PAC12 Tourney begins Friday. The gals are then headed to the Big Dance, projected to be in the Albany regional with UCONN. MBB trip to the Washington schools, and baseball spends the weekend in Seattle (facing NCAA tournament teams Minnesota, Indiana and Coastal Carolina).  There is also that recent announcement of the end, for now, of the women’s swimming program.

If you’d like to help Angry cover some of the hosting costs, or if you’d just like to be sure he doesn’t run out of guitar strings, check the donate info on his recruiting rankings thread of Feb 20.

As ever, GO BEAVS !!

  1. With swimming being cut, I would expect the athletic department to start another women’s program to replace it.

The most logical would be tennis. Only the beavs don’t field a women’s tennis program in the pac12.

Second choice would be lacrosse. Maybe both.

Either one would not require expensive facility costs nor equipment costs.

Main costs would be the coaches.

    • Agreed on the facilities side. It’s probably the reason swimming is going away. We have to borrow the city’s facilities to host anything. Building and maintaining a natatorium is a lot more expensive than pouring concrete and setting up a net.

But we’ll have to check the numbers. The last demographics I saw had OSU at 53% male. I wouldn’t be surprised to see us add tennis and men’s T&F (starting with long distance to also add CC). A play on those numbers gives us three new teams to replace the loss… again, without facility upgrades.

      • I just saw the link in the other thread. It’s been grumbled for a while. The cost benefit of a natatorium and fielding (pooling?) a team in a sport which requires either that dedicated facility or weather compliant with outdoor training is not working to the benefit of the SAs in that sport or the school at large.

Facilities exist which can support low overhead sports and increase the benefits to more SAs.

That being said, shouldn’t there be a little good news/bad news going on? There has to be a plan in place to address where all the scholarships go. Why not lay that out in a statement somewhere to get the ball rolling, or to tell us the ball is already rolling?

  2. Fairly recently I read some OSU fan’s twitter ranting about how our AD had a substantial chunk of change donated to it, earmarked specifically for T&F, but the AD decided to spread those funds around towards other programs too, against the wishes of the donor. As a result, the donor apparantly asked for their donation back? Anybody know if there’s anything to this story?

Seemed like a strange story to just make up and rant about, but twitter never ceases to surprise me.

  3. I posted this in the other thread, but i think even with the loss we are still compliant. When the womens track progam was restarted the initial plan was to bring mens track back at a later date without adding another womens sport. I think most of that was because we didnt have facilities in place. Im almost sure we field more womens sports then mens.

Just checked, we do have more womens then mens sports. 7 mens 10 womens without swimming. Which means they can add mens indoor and outdoor track and cross country.

    • It’s not the count of total sports they compare, it’s total scholarships. And football alone has 85.

We could still currently be compliant, but just wanted to point out the measure they use is different. Adding 3 more men’s sports wouldn’t be possible without adding several more women’s sports/scholarships too, or cutting some current men’s scholarships.

      • I forgot about Indoor. We could add three teams by adding men’s TFx2 and CC.

It’s just a question of how much scholarship money is being distributed per the demographics of the school. If school is 60/40 men, the allocated ships are distributed according to that ratio in order to be compliant with Title IX.

It gets even more fun when we start to do the accounting for all the sports that offer partials.

          • Here’s what I was thinking of. The DOJ filed a complaint with OSU regarding how they count their female athletes. OSU is counting male athletes who participate on the practice roster for female sports, like WBB and Soccer, as female scholarships. Also a complaint that we over estimate out female track athlete scholarships(guessing this has to do with counting each partial female scholarship as a full scholarship?)

Anyway, no NCAA investigation as of this time, so not sure if this was just a tactic to scare OSU into changing their methods or if anything further would even come of this.

But cutting women’s swimming will only further expose OSU if they’re already playing with squishy numbers.

            http://www.orangemedianetwork.com/daily_barometer/complaint-filed-with-doj-claims-osu-violating-title-ix-inflating/article_fc30b76e-676f-11e8-9539-67348bd60954.html

          • Yeah… that was weird.

I don’t even know if it’s real. One would think someone who was going to bring a lawsuit would have done enough homework to at least create reasonable numbers derived from reasonable scenarios… using language appropriate for the business.

You know… like they actually studied the business side enough to sound like they know what they’re talking about.

It’s possible some school somewhere is doing those things, I guess. But going off half-cocked is called that for a reason.

I would argue that it was so insensitive to detail, that it was some scare-meme created by someone with little imagination in order to make people think their schools are under attack from some otherism.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that people passionate enough to be truly activist at least do their homework. Not all of them are great at translating it, but at least they speak the language.

  4. Dan Patrick said this morning that the 40 yard dash is way overrated at the combine… Trevon Bradford was 6th and Isaiah Hodgins was 7th amongst receivers, Jermar Jefferson was 3rd amongst RB’s, and Gebbia was 4th amongst QB’s.

  5. Any word on the availability of RB Calvin Tyler? I don’t recall the nature of his injury, but hopefully he’s good to go?

Hoping to see that Nick Moore is developing into a reliable #2 option at QB…or will by the end of this season when Luton’s 6th(!) year of eligibiliy is gone.

Also hoping to see some evidence that the O line can maintain or improve last year’s play; should be clear improvement at center with the Az transfer.

Also, who provides optimism at kicker?

          • Won’t comment on whether it tastes like sack, but one thing I think we can all agree on…good coffee, it ain’t.

Although they do have friendly service for the most part. I guess if you’re looking for a sugar bomb with your blech “coffee” this is definitely the place to go in Corvallis.

(also re: delta bravos…completely off the record, Bob’s not a generally terrible person but can’t say I’d say the same thing about Tracy)

          • All they are is sugar in their version of Folgers. They’re in a service industry, so they decided to focus on the service part of it, instead of the product. Their franchise model is amazing. It’s hard to knock when they do everything everyone says is the right thing to do, but doesn’t do anymore.

I also go for better coffee at the thermos that I fill at home… or the mom and pops that litter other parking lots, in a pinch. But I drink one for Dane every year.

  6. Eggers up with a piece on Beavs MBB, quotes Tinkle about HC Hurley:

“They’re one of the more physical teams,” Tinkle said. “They climb up into you everywhere and put the onus on that (officiating) crew. (The Sun Devils) probably say (the refs) are going to get bored calling fouls. It’s a really good strategy.”

Eggers take: “Hurley got one second-half technical foul, but would have been given the heave-ho by then had the refs not been willing to take more guff than a cop at a protest march. “

    https://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/421551-325782-beavers-have-little-margin-for-error

  7. Baseball schedule is not favorable (Coaches Poll — #4UCLA, #5Stanf, #23ASU, #30UO, and #34UW). Every currently high-ranked opponent, Beavs will have on the road. Good for the conference overall, finally seeing some recognition after 7 finals appearances in last 15 years.
Beavs will need to steal some away series, and get at least two sweeps at home to stay in top 10.

      • Highly recommend traveling down to Eugene for the baseball series. Their fans dont turn out and Beavs outnumber them pretty easily. Plus it’s a nice stadium plenty of good seats available(just avoid the 3rd base bleachers, they’re pretty cramped)
Last season, they still allowed you to bring in outside food/drink too. I brought a small coller full of bottled waters and sandwiches into the games, no questions asked. And sometimes they have a flat screen TV to giveaway to 1 lucky fan, to encourage fan turnout. It’s likely worth more than a cup of coffee.

  8. Canzano apparantly hosted Scott Barnes on his show today.
A few of the quotes I saw:

    On funding football:

“We have to — absolutely have to — continue to support football. What’s interesting about that is that is on the backs of Beaver Nation, our season-ticket base and conference revenue. Power Five football isn’t built on the back of institutional revenue. It’s built on the back of the great, loyal donors and season-ticket holders we have.”

On the goals of the athletic department:

“We want to win championships and we want to graduate our student-athletes at the top of the conference… we’ve got to continue to grow our base (in football). We’ve lost a base. Our football program is at a low point. It goes without saying.”

    On how important football is:

“It’s the rising tide that lifts all boats… when football is right and when its sustained at a level of success, all the programs succeed. It’s our biggest opportunity to grow.”

I guess Scott doesn’t take any responsibility for the sad state of our football program. Maybe someone needs to remind him of the reasons they’ve lost so much of their fan base and donors over the last decade.

    • I really don’t like Barnes but it’s hard to hold him responsible for the state of the football program. He didn’t hire GA but somehow got GA out with no buyout. Most of the responsibility is with BDC. He didn’t handle the Riley last couple years very well and struck out big time with GA.

But is Barnes the right guy to get the dept in good shape? I lean toward no. To really kick start the program he’ll need to find a big donor to help. Don’t think there’s one who’s willing.

And then add on that the pac12 networks isn’t giving the cash infusion schools expected.

Osu athletics are in a very precarious spot right now. Operating with little room for error.

      • None of these things were surprises when he took the job. If he was willing to take on the task, all while earning the 2nd highest AD salary in the Pac12, he better be ready take more responsibility than just “oh, the fans and donors just need to spend more money”

The Pac12 network issue affects every Pac12 school. If we’ve set ourselves up to depend more heavily on the Pac12 Network revenue than other Pac12 schools do, then fix the model at OSU.

It’s a lazy, self handicapping, line of thinking. If he’s not the right person for the job, then move on and let us find the right person. He makes too much money to be making excuses.

If the donors aren’t willing to spend money to save the ass of a lazy AD, then find an AD who they actually want to support.

  9. “”””There were a few surprises Tuesday, notably from injuries. Tight end Noah Togiai turned his ankle during a workout Monday, and didn’t practice. Togiai battled injuries during the 2018 season after undergoing two offseason ankle surgeries. Smith said he doesn’t believe the current injury is “long term, but obviously disappointing not having him the first day.”””””

Wow, when is this guy not hurt. Him and Luton need to have a contest or something.

      • My review after back to back comparison:

        The Mighty Squirrel Burger: ham, egg, Swiss & oepperjack cheese, and (what appeared to be) fresh cut fries. $8.75, great friendly service;

Block 15 Chile burger, beer battered fries, about $15.00. Green chiles dominate, couldn’t taste much else. And I like heat, but flavor with heat is better. Service was efficient, no complaints about response time.

I give the nod to the Squirrel burger, particularly at the price point.

        • I was at Squirrels Sunday evening after the Beavs game and can confirm, fries are fresh cut. I could see the bucket of sliced potatoes from my seat at the bar. Great service and fun spot. My dad went there back in the 70s when he attended OSU. Same owner and there are party favors by the door as you leave that he was sure to point out. Safety first.

      • I ate at BoVine a year or so ago at the salem location. Only positive in my mind was the sauce selection. Burgers were decent but spendy and the fries were really plain without any sauce. Nothing special.

  10. Hey thanks NB. Landed in San Diego last night and will be back in a week. Checking in here and there…
No access to ab emails on phone so not ignoring anyone.

    • As much as I dislike nike/knight, that PK80 event was actually pretty fun and I got pretty good tickets to multiple games for fairly cheap. I recommend going if you’re in the area.

  11. I am curious to see how many of the young players emerge and push for a starting position, especially on defense. We have to see a better DL push and pressure on the QB this season. If we don’t have any presence/resemblance of a pass rush from our front 7, then we will be hurting this season and looking at a 1-2 win season again. Offense should be good enough to win 3-4 games if our defense improves from a D- to a C/C+

    • To be honest to the language, it would be pleaded. Pled is the Americanized shorthand version that sticks after getting regular usage over time, and the dictionaries finally say, “Whatever. Fine. It can be a word.”

    • It was interesting at the beginning of the game how the big three (especially Tinkle) were reluctantly throwing the ball inside to Kelley and Big G and they were scoring. Once the big three started their dribbling crap UW streaked ahead. Some threes by Ethan have the Beavs back in the game, but a ton of turnovers again.

      • I don’t get the thought process.

When these three put up shots, do they dribble for 20 seconds then launch a trey or practice footwork which will get them a circus shot and one?

Or do they receive the ball from someone in the paint, set and shoot?

We always passed the ball inside, then out. The offense recognized this, and it played inside, then out. And there are several places bigs can move and post… better places than four feet outside the top of the arc.Short corner, side post, elbows, high post… you don’t even have to control the blocks, though, that would be optimal.

Making defenses play two-dimensional D by only passing and dribbling outside the shells they practice daily is poor hoops. You have to make them play on a second axis in order to make them work.

        • I also wouldn’t mind a 4-high with lots of motion.

But I’m not buying it when the bigs are running picks and rolls at 25 feet. Tres should be running that pick, at the very least. At least he can pick and pop.

    • Did Wayne Tinkle just kiss Reichle after he made that 3 pointer with the and1?

Sure looked like. Whatever it takes to motivate, I guess

  12. Everyone always complains about Tinkles coaching… missing wide open threes, unforced errors, terrible fouls, missed free throws… that’s on the players

        • Sit the Thompson bros and Tres? I don’t think so…

At least you’re seeing the same thing everyone else is seeing.

I see what you are saying but way too late in the season, too big of game, etc…

That’s why it was suggested it not happen before the season, a couple games into the season, frustratingly after lousy non-con losses, at the beginning of the conference schedule… and now, as we have given up caring about doing what’s right and are just waiting for the end of the season.

          You know… like last season.

  13. Beavs have the ball and will play for the final shot. 22 seconds left, tied at 66.

Thompson Jr to beat the Dawgs? It’s happened twice before.

    • The last few whistles have sure come quickly to preserve the UW lead in the final minute. Rest of the game they let that contact go, and that jump ball was called really quickly too.

      • Yep, that inbounds call was outrageous… oh well they shouldn’t of been in that spot to begin with… could of won it in regulation

    • Gotta bring it in Pullman! Gonna take everything we got you know but we got this we will always prevail as the OSU BEAVERS NATION!

Anyone giving up on these young men is an asshole. That’s all

  14. I can’t wait to not have to watch any Thompson brothers play basketball ever again.

Dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble shoot. Like really crappy James Hardens.

    • It’s been said over and over, but the offense runs better when Vernon is in the game. He had several minutes early in the 2nd half and the team had everybody involved in the offense. But then we dont use him at all in the final 10 minutes and we essentially just wait for Tres to bail us out with a contested 3 or dribbling into double teams but drawing the foul.
Tres made a ton of plays to keep us in the game, but you just knew it wouldn’t be enough because he had no help.

      • Tinkle kept us in it but also made a lot of mistakes…. just can’t have those mental errors at this point in the season and career… like everyone has said with no true point guard out there at all times, the offense is stagnant

    • They were great, GREAT, in hs. How are they this ineffective in college? Tinkle needs an offensive mind added to the coaching staff next year. You could have the worst shooters but at least move the ball.

  15. Another moral victory. It’s the beaver way.

Despite the shitty final shot in regulation, Two missed FT’s in the last 1:30 sank them. Make one or both and this game might’ve been over in regulation.

  16. I think it’s some talent but without discipline and there’s zero accountability from the “star” players and the coach.

    • There was a long discussion on FB about the “star” player and how he gets away with doing whatever and he must be treated differently by coach dad because of the father son relationship blah blah blah. He needs to be held accountable. Too many immature mistakes. If he is that good of a player, he needs to show it all of the time. That is what makes great players, great players. What if Tres was the senior and Stevie was the Junior. I would be curious how the team (especially Ethan) would play without Tres on the team. I hated playing with coaches kids growing up. They were treated differently and if they were good then rarely were they given consequences for things other players were reamed for. It’s hard to have a team unity when the team isn’t unified in their discipline.

      • It could be argued that the team played one of their best games against Oregon at home and I think Tres only scored 13 points. They beat USC on the road without him.

  17. Ducks up 70-55 in Pullman with less than 2 minutes left.

How in the fuck did the Beavs get swept at home by the Arizona schools but the ducks blew them both out by 28 and 26? If there’s a civil war III in Vegas, right now the ducks are the better team and would win. Dana Altman is a scumbag POS but there’s no denying he’s a way fucking better coach than Tinkle. And it’s not even close.

Defend the 3 and you’ll beat Ernie Kent’s team.

Probably can forget about the 3 seed now too. Which sucks because it puts them on Washington’s side of the bracket if they win Saturday.

Better win Saturday. Don’t want to be heading into the conference tournament on a 4 game slide and wind up having to play on day 1.

4 losses in the last 5 games by a total of 11 points. This season could’ve turned out so different than it will.

A few years ago I called a beav win in Pullman they had to have before the game. I can’t do the same this year. This team is too Jekyll and Hyde to predict anything. Hell, they could lose to Cal and it wouldn’t surprise anyone.

    • They blew three winnable games in a row… Hard to see them winning 4 in a row… what happened to that shut down defence from year one… that’s what’s keeping the ucks alive, they are surviving on defense alone

    • Idk, I’d call the WSU game a 50-50 game now. Senior day for them, last game of the season at home, etc. I won’t be surprised to see WSU roll to the win.

  18. If I coached this team, I would run the ball with Vernon at the point. If the offense bogged down I would just feed the ball into Kelly and make sure he gets 10-12 shots a game. He can get his shot off anytime from 10 feet in. I just don’t understand the passing on the perimeter for 20 seconds and what the fuck is that thing when the wing comes all the way up for a pass and just pops the ball back to Ethan or Stevie, seems like a waste of time and energy. I hate this team, it’s driving me insane!

And I said it two weeks ago………I will believe 10 wins when I see it.

    • Yes, offense was terrible. Especially on the last possession of regulation. First possession of OT they actually ran a screen and Ethan got around the zone on the right side drawing a foul. Why have an actual offensive set when the game isn’t on the line but with 22 second left the ball never went inside the 3 point line. Why wasn’t Tres going to the high post there?

Kelly being the scapegoat at the end of the shot clock I disagree with. I have seen him shoot jumpers and he doesn’t look confidence. Though I didn’t watch all of the game last night so I don’t know how he got his points. He does need touches especially against a zone defense.

OT, we beat the ducks twice this year!!!!!! That high didn’t last long. Or maybe it’s been too long and the team forgot that second civil war win wasn’t the game to punch their ticket to any sort of tourney.

      • I just think STjr just decided he was going to take that last shot, regardless. That’s where he had the previous two buzzer beaters against UW from, and he ran around the arc to receive the pass from ET there with 6 seconds left. Hero ball, but he got smothered defensively as soon as he decided to dribble.

  19. I don’t think the Beavs will make the NIT, which is unfortunate because they can play with almost anyone for 97% of a game.

  20. This is where we take a stand and show everyone what Beaver basketball is all about! We’ll get some big national attention with a win vs the cougars! Let’s go for the BEAVERS!!!

    • You guys hired Ernie Kent… I think he’s won 38% of his gamesl… your right I guess it could be worse for the beavs lol

  21. Typical game for this program under Tinkle. Multiple issues that continue to be repeated game after game. Late game stagnation, key possessions wasted, TO after a big 3 by Tres not only killed momentum but was the final TO!

Easy prediction that Wazzu beats them by 10-15 pts. Excuses about no energy after UW loss etc. This team hasn’t consistently focused on defense, rebounding, or any offense that resembles awareness of situations.

6 wins, 8 losses in games decided by 5 pts or less. Is that on the coaches or players? I remember a couple that may have been on the refs…

Kyler Kelly is better than Eubanks & Big G

Honestly as frustrating to watch as any of those Craig Robinson teams.

    • Kelly was clearly better at the beginning of the year but in recent memory, other than last nights game he hasn’t been much of a factor offensively. Blocking shots here and there but rebounding numbers down. Partly due to reduced minutes. Big G is inconsistent but I don’t think Kelly is better game in and game out.

I am looking forward to seeing his development in year two with the program. Although, development seems to be a word that doesn’t exist with this team.

      • Is Rupp the problem? Supposed to be a ‘big man’ basketball guru but I haven’t seen a sign of it during his tenure with Tinkle at OSU. A case of Riley-like loyalty?

  22. Was watching the game last night and wife asked about the arc below the basket, restricted area. As we discussed we learned that neither of us fully understood how it works. Would one of you mensas… please provide a short explanation. Thanks…

As to the game last night…. yadda…. yadda… yadda. Nuh…said.

    • You must be outside of the restricted area in order to draw a charge. If you’re inside of the area, the only calls will be a block or a non-call. That’s how I understand it. :-)

  23. Heimlich update, from Martin Meyer “media watch.” A reporter responds to him “So, we’re supposed to ignore it happened, even if the entire world knows about it. . . . Teams don’t want to take a PR hit.”

To which Meyer responded, MLB teams are only afraid of a “PR hit because of a few opinionated misinformed journalists.”

    • Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos felt Heimlich was due another opportunity, but the team and league have drawn criticism from the victim’s family and from prominent activists. That has forced the league to reexamine Heimlich’s future.

“Family and prominent activists” aka the ex-sister in law and Brenda Tracy.

      • Unfortunately, Heimlich is screwed. Sounds like these “activists” are watching his every move. I mentioned before, it’s going to take the Mom admitting to a false accusation or the daughter coming forward and saying her mother told her to say things. Not likely. And that’s not to say that he didn’t do it. Even if he did do it, I still personally fall on the side of juvenile rehabilitation.

        • Colin Kaepernick just settled with the NFL, and he didn’t even have teams willing to say they wanted to sign him.
With Heimlich, there are 2 teams now who have tried to sign him, only to be blocked by their leagues. Main difference is they’re both in other countries.

Get Mark Geragos on the case.

    • Now that Luke has nothing more to lose, why doesn’t he come out with a tell all story putting it all on the line. I know he doesn’t want to rock the family boat but he is being thrown under the bus over and over and then under a train over and over. He needs to start spreading some new stories with the other side of the story in my opinion.

      • I’m not sure what more he can say other then “he didn’t to do it” which he has already done. Otherwise, he comes off looking desperate. Anything from him or his parents falls on deaf ears at this point. A shocking confession from the other side would be the only helpful thing from my view.

I must admit, it’s a weird story, with nuances that escape the general public. If he did to do it, we feel for the young victim BUT he was a minor who was successfully rehabilitated. If the mother is lying, there is not going to be any justice for Luke. Seems like misguided third parties are the ones getting the most satisfaction from this outcome.

  24. Utah beat USC to take sole possession of 3rd. Colorado gave UCLA the bufu.

Beavs in a 4-way tie for 4th with the Buffs, UCLA and Oregon currently.

Of those other 3 teams I only see Colorado winning on Saturday. Beavs must win. 3rd place is probably out of the question.

  25. Cal beats Stanford at Maples to win their 3rd straight game.

Raise your hand if you predicted that when they were 0-15. Not sure I’d want to face them right now. Could be dangerous. Beavs didn’t exactly handle them a few weeks ago in the only matchup they played.

If the Beavs wind up as the 5 seed? They’ll play Cal in the opening round. And the Beavs will lose. I’ll stick to that prediction if it comes to pass.

    • I agree. I’d take Cal’s team right now. At least they are going in the right direction. I hope the quacks have to play Cal in the first round. I haven’t determined if that is a possible scenario but that would be mighty great if it could happen.

  26. Told y’all that I expected Eggers to report on spring FB. This from his twitter in response to someone else waiting for that piece:
“Got a few stories in the hopper (Tres Tinkle, Aleah Goodman, Johnny Miller for three) before I get to that,…”
With as much time as he spends on the blazers and, even, visiting musicians, it really shows what a talented and hard working journalist can do.

  27. NY Times up with more on Mexico/Luke, including mention of Brenda.
They quote José Antonio Mansur, the owner of the Tecolotes:

“I’m not a judge,” Mansur said … “I’m just a businessman, and I’ll give him an opportunity. If he was guilty, he’s already been judged. I’m just looking from here on forward. He has this opportunity, just like any citizen who has made a mistake. Who hasn’t tripped up in life and has to get back up?”
Mansur (also) said that a rejection of Heimlich’s contract would be discriminatory.

      • Brenda Tracy was a victim of a terrible crime and for that I feel for her

        but…..

Brenda Tracy is a trash human at this point.

Everyone who is not in jail deserves to make a living. She needs to shut the fuck up and go away.

        • My quick thoughts, others may have a different take or additional observations:

Seems to me we have two stories about choices and consequences, and maybe eventually Karma.

An unwed mom (of 2?) in her early 20’s decides it’s a good idea to party with some 18-20 year old athletes. She is horrifically abused and turns the experience into a lifelong occupation and is seen by many as a brave hero.

A 15 year old model student athlete decides it’s a good idea to take the advice of an attorney of limited ability. Through a system snafu his “sealed” juvenile adjudication is leaked to a writer who gladly presents a one sided account of the circumstances. The experience results, so far, in his exclusion from utilizing his abilities to earn a living.

To say life doesn’t seem fair is an understatement.

I’d respect BT if she campaigned for personal responsibility and good judgement for all, not simply male students.

    • Beavs and Minn at 3pm today. Should be really cold in Seattle today. Roof closed, and small ball will rule. Power alleys are much larger in mlb stadiums. Expecting beavs to take 2 of 3. Coastal game is a toss up.

Abel still needs to get the walks down to become a dominant Friday guy.

Fehmel should have a good time with the bats and balls dead in the cold.

Tweedt will get 1 or 2 times through the lineup and then the bullpen the rest of the way.

Should see shorter hooks on the starters with the cold weather.

        • Wish I was there!
So the game notes list Minnesota’s starter for the Rodent matchup being Max Meyer, the AA closer.
They have struggled with pitching and he had been left on the bench with a lot of the games out of reach. I question how many innings he can go and if he has a third pitch. He pitched in their opening win in Surprise and was hitting 98-97 with his heater. Also has a wipeout slider. Weighs a buck 65, but has lightning in that right arm. Rutchsman’s dad told me in Surprise that Adley though he was the best pitcher on the All Star team that they were teammates on last summer. Seems like a desperation move, but a hopeful season is going south with a brutal schedule. Go Rodents!

          • I looked to see if Gophers would have an internet radio broadcast; thought I’d try that if Big Jim wasn’t around to help Jon today.
Appears the only audio stream is KEJO, Corvallis…….with Jon.

  28. Holy shit Zac Taylor is bad. Sure he got “hot” for a month last year and batted 270. How the heck has he lasted this long. It’s always been surprising when he actually gets a hit.

  29. WBB: Quarterfinals settled in one side of the bracket: UCLA will face phils phighting ATM’s tomorrow at 5.
Beavs go against UW on PAC12 net tonight at 8:30 to see who’ll face Cal or Stanford.

  30. Chamberlain the winner. 4.1 IP, 0 H, 7 K but 2 hit batters. Gophers with 5 errors and Beavs with 10 LOB. McMahon 0-4 with 4 K

    • Ugly game and result for the WBB squad as well. A 1 pt loss (it didn’t feel that close) to the team they beat by 47 in regular season.

      • Crazy ending. If Scott didn’t waste two TO’s in 15 seconds and they get to inbound at half court, perhaps they steal it. UW played better. Goodman cold as dry ice and the Big Kielbasa misses several point blank shots. A couple of those go in and the survive and advance. Sucks for the fans that traveled to Vegas.

        • Should have never come down to that last possession. I wonder if this team just doesn’t have the killer instinct (exception being Pivec). The last several games have been nail biters and it doesn’t seem like they all should have been that close.

Still, the team has accomplished more than many expected, given the loss of Kat on top of not seeing Andrea Aquino in the lineup. Weren’t they picked as #3? I guess that’s about where they are now.

I’ll watch them to the end, which could come in the next game or maybe in sweet sixteen, doubt they can go further. Ahh, but next year!

          • Katie has been a disappointment as a senior. Way too passive. This was her team and she did not take charge. Passes up way too many good looks at the basket and defers to the underclassmen.
She should be a post up nightmare.

          • Seems like that series against the Quacks took something out of them. I was not around last night, stunned to learn this morning that they lost to UW. Sort of expecting a second or even first round exit this year. Still a hell of a lot better than MBB or Football!

          • @bg: Agree about Katie, Scott seems to see a lot that we don’t; look at the minutes he gives her.
Was hoping for her to have a break out when she made that early 3, but thereafter no scoring, some rebs and decent passes but not enough to offset what looks like unwillingness to shoot.

          • I wonder if they are having a bit of program fatigue? They’ve been performing at a high level for quite a while now, maybe the focus and motivation are suffering. They’d already beat UW twice this season as well.

  31. Seems like today’s MBB game will say something about WT’s coaching career here at OSU. Much to gain against an inferior opponent even if it is on the road. They should come out fired up and dominate from the start. If they lose, then lose in the tourney opener and miss a NIT bid, I think it’s time to part ways, regardless of TT’s status.

    • I am conditioned to expect the worst and expect them to leave a steaming pile on the court today.
Lil’ Tinkle makes a FT and they are actually playing for something after a huge win on the road.
      Luck O da Beavs…….

      • I thought that last play in regulation was more of a shit-fest than any missed free throws. Not sure if that’s coaching or just selfishness from the Big Three. You have to do better than that with 22 seconds left. Someone was open when the double team came.

      • Hard to put it on Tres making a freethrow though. Washington would have played the last 40 or so seconds much differently if they were down by 1 point. Many plays throughout the game led to the loss.

  32. Did @nicebeaver do a game thread for the cougs game? I’m trying to figure out who to blame for such a terrible start.

    1. Let’s not play any defense, especially on the best player so he can get off to a confident start.
    2. Let’s turn the ball over.
    3. Let’s look like we don’t know what we are running on offense.
    4. This is deja’vu.

    • That jinx thing was specifically in mind as this thread was written. Not sure it helped, but was hoping an emphasis on FB spring practice would elicit “inside” FB info. Things have been pretty quiet re: FB news.

    • Can’t blame me this time. I’ve been avoiding OSU sports all week and we’re still taking a giant deuce.

Speaking of giant dueces, I’ve been reading about a chinese massage parlor owner who sold rub&tugs to Robert Kraft was also selling 2 for 1 specials where you’d get a rub & tug w/ a Trump family meet and greet at Mar a Lago. Does it get any more MAGA than that?

      • Speaking of Chinese/China, Caught the end of Conzano’s show the other day and didn’t have time to turn the dial before I hard him mentioned Pac-12 commish pitching the conference to China?? Anyone heard about this?

          • Screw football. It’s as exciting to the rest of the world as Union Rugby is to the United States. Except our version of football has the players standing around most of the time.

Track and field, badminton, ping pong, hoops and soccer are the sports the Chinese watch. We’ll see which winter sports stick after 2022. I expect at least ice skating, maybe some mountain sports.

  33. Why am I not surprised by a completely pathetic and uninspired start? Beavers down 8 at about the halfway mark of the first half.

  34. Beaver season in a nutshell…….they finally get it within one and force Wazzu into a terrible possession BUT they let Franks catch and shoot from five feet away on an out of bounds play with one second and he MISSES. The shot clock goes off and Kelley just stands there, Wazzu gets the ball, hits a three, next possession another three and they are up by 7.

  35. It wasn’t pretty, but the Beavs finally have a winning conference record after 29 years and that coveted bye. Let’s see if it helps in Vegas!

  36. 4th place would be ideal. Face UW in the second round is better than the finals. If they even win the first game………..

  37. Kudos to the MBB and Coach Tinkle/staff. I’m surprised they did it and must congratulate the win.

I suppose if Tres had been healthy for the full conference season, they may have been even better record wise.

10-8 conference record is another accomplishment for Coach Tinkle, added to the NCAA tourney appearance already, and 3rd place conference finish.

Maybe NIT championship if these guys can put together a decent run. Or another NCAA appearance if they put together 3 great focused games next week….

  38. They could go to any assisted living facility, grab a guy from the memory care unit, hand him a microphone and he would not fuck up as much announcing baseball as Jon Warren.

  39. Beavs football picked up a transfer at CB from WSU today.
Myles Green Richard, was a class of 2018 guy originally, from Eugene/Sprimgfield. OSU recruited him too, but if I remember correctly, WSU offered him earlier than most other D1 schools and he went there. He did visit OSU for a game or 2 back when he was a recruit.

Havent looked into the circumstances of the transfer, but if it was related to a family need, it could mean that he would be immediately available and have the 1 year sitting period waved. I’ll see what I can find out tomorrow when I have some time.

    https://247sports.com/player/myles-green-richards-93603/

I have to admit, it’s a little odd that no Beaver coaches or teammates have retweeted his announcement. Maybe they all went to be early for daylight savings?

    • And even though wrestling finished 3rd, they won 4 individual titles and are sending 6 wrestlers to nationals, the most of any Pac-12 school. WGYM also had their highest road score of the year.

  40. Beav baseball moves into #1 on Boyd’s World RPI today. Also #1 on Boyd’s World ISR

Pretty big game today vs Coastal Carolina who is #11 RPI and #8 ISR

  41. Haven’t seen much of anything on football practice. I thought maybe Eggers would have something on the first week. Did see this bit in the G-T:

“Pierce is still working on his elbow, but it won’t slow him too much.

“I’m like 95 percent. It’s still getting there,” he said. “The lift has been getting good, because it was weak. So now I’ve been lifting with (strength and conditioning coach Mike McDonald) and he’s been getting me right.”

Jefferson is kicking up his offseason work because he knows what it takes in the regular season.

“I’m playing with a chip on my shoulder this season. I know teams are going to come after me and they know me now, so I’ve just been doing extra stuff like Saturdays I’ve been doing stadiums to get my legs stronger or working on my 40 time, working on my speed. Just doing extra stuff,” he said. “Just get ahead of the game.”

I was surprised that Pierce’s elbow isn’t 100%. Unsurprised and glad to see Jefferson is working hard and knows that teams will have eyes on him next season.

    • The lack of info on football practice has surprised me as well. As mentioned a couple days ago, Eggers has tweeted that he has three other Beaver stories in the works before he expects to get to FB, so I’m guessing he won’t report till maybe the event at Mountainside HS on April 13. Been keeping an eye out for Lundeberg to have a podcast on FB but nothing so far.

There has been mention, somewhere, of David Morris still in rehab, but not much news beyond that.

I did force myself to listen to Mama M and Marcus Greaves podcast, she says she and the guy from the big O were the only media members at the combine. A lot of positive “look good, culture changing, players like it” stuff.

Only specific was good combine numbers for Omar Hicks-Onu (4.4 and 10.8 broadjump-best reported). Greaves made the point that the program seems to be emphasizing speed over brute strength, noted no weight lifts involved in the combine. Combine results (top 5) are on the FB twitter.

Three more sessions next week and then, I believe, two weeks off. When will we find out how much Elu weighs now?

  42. This year’s team strikes out a lot. Definitely a step down in plate discipline and not swinging at pitches to hit with two strikes. Its early, but opponent’s pitching is only going to get better as Pac-12 play begins.

    • Some guys like Greg Fuchs, Mendazona, Harvey, Meckler probably need a longer look at the 6 through 9 spots in the order. We have too many guys below the mendoza line. Armstrong and Taylor in particular need to snap out of it.

  43. A. What did I miss?
    B. I have to fly one of these Southwest Boeing 737 Max death machines tomorrow. If I go down Nicebeav inherits the site. Consider this my AB will.

  44. Very good news for pac12 baseball. Rpi rankings showing 4 of top 5 are pac12. Could mean 6-7 teams into the tourney.

Top 3 in conference will likely host. Maybe even all will be top 8 seeds.

Rest of beavs non conf is tough. No cupcakes at all.

Then finish top half in conf and should be safely in.

  45. Watched the coastal game in person. Lots of unusual errors for the team. Cost them the game.

Coastal is a good team too. Can see why they are ranked high. Made osu pay for those errors.

The hit and run with adley was a missed sign. Adley stared at Malone all the way back to the dugout. It looked like a couple missed signs during the game.

Verberg looked good. Bullpen is super deep.

Will be curious to see who gets the start on Tuesday since it would have been gambrell. Maybe one of the freshman?

  46. D1 has some stuff that isn’t behind their paywall, this from their “Weekly Chat” will be of some interest to those who recently said that Adley was “not a good runner”:

Kendall Rogers:…For me, Rutschman is definitely still the No. 1 pick in the draft for now. He just has it all. He runs the bases well, he’s a premier catcher with a great arm and he’s certainly an outstanding hitter.

    • Yes!!! The best player in college ball has no weaknesses, thank god — Like the only player to ever get an interference call ever. Really second guessing D1 baseball now. Especially since they are showing signs of bias protecting their preseason predictions. How the fuck is Florida and Georgia still in the top 10, and ASU just now cracking the top 25 with an undefeated record…? Both Florida and Georgia already losing multiple mid-week games to cream-puffs.

      • I did it for my son. His birthday is September 1st so it was either be the youngest kid in his class or give him the extra year to grow and develop. I’m a September kid too and my parents put me in school when I was 5 and I graduated when I was 17 and looking back it was a disadvantage.

        • September is right at the cut off though so it’s probably a 50/50 decision.

June is gaming the system. He would have been 19 at graduation.

  47. “The racketeering conspiracy charges were brought against coaches at schools including Wake Forest, Stanford, Georgetown, the University of Southern California and University of California, Los Angeles.”

From an AP story on an FBI case headlined: “Hollywood actresses, college coaches indicted in admissions bribery case”

  48. I think he returns. The fact that he is 23 makes him pretty much a non prospect. Don’t think he’ll want to spend time in the gleague vs one more year in college. If he improved his 3 point shooting, he could be a viable prospect.

    • @Bill curious what would be your pros/cons for him staying with the Beavs one more year? Overseas is an option too if he wants to follow in Wayne’s footsteps.

At age 23, I think being away from college after 4 years wouldn’t be that bad and the chance to make some money.

I personally think he has maxed out at the college level but I’d love for him to come back another year.

      • Pros of staying – one more year in a very comfortable environment. Can really only help his pro prospects. Won’t be in the g league riding buses.

Cons – his game won’t improve significantly in a final year and he’ll be one year older.

He doesn’t have really compelling reasons to go or stay which is why I think he stays. Money isn’t an issue and he’ll be coming back to a decent team too.

  49. Some of the allegations being directed at USC include:

Singer directed payments of an alleged $350,000 to a private soccer club owned by Khosroshahin and Janke for designating four students as recruits for the USC women’s soccer team even though none of them played competitive soccer.
Singer allegedly made private school tuition payments for Vavic’s own children under the guise of a scholarship in exchange for a commitment to designate students as recruits in the future.
Heinel allegedly accepted a total of $1.3 million into USC bank accounts she controlled between 2014 and 2018. That account was typically used for the Women’s Athletic Board.
Singer began a “sham consulting agreement” that paid Heinel $20,000 a month beginning in July 2018.
Vavic designated two students as water polo recruits and a bank account – which funded Vavic’s USC water polo team – allegedly received $250,000 as a result.
Heinel allegedly received between $50,000 and $100,000 per student designated as an prospective student-athlete recruit. The FBI states she did this for more than two dozen students, which had fabricated athletic credentials and did not even play sports.

  50. oaches implicated in the recruiting scheme, according to court documents:

    • Current Stanford sailing coach John Vandemoer

    • Former Yale women’s soccer coach Rudy Meredith

    • Former Georgetown tennis coach Gordie Ernst, now at Rhode Island

    • Current UCLA men’s soccer coach Jorge Salcedo (reportedly placed on leave following his indictment)

    • Current Texas men’s tennis coach Michael Center

    • Current Wake Forest women’s volleyball coach William “Bill” Ferguson (placed on leave following his indictment)

    • Former USC women’s soccer head coach Ali Khosroshahin

    • Former USC women’s soccer assistant coach Laura Janke

    • Current USC Senior Associate Athletic Director Donna Heinel

    • Current USC water polo head coach Jovan Vavic

  51. Listened to the most recent DAM Podcast while working today (w/ Special celebrity guest “former host of the show” Brandon Sprague)

    My takeaways(was only half listening)

-QB controversy! Mama and Marcus think Luton looks better, but Gebbia has more swagga.
-Higher energy level at Spring practices this year
-We have about 30 players covering the Safety position this year
-4* DL Isaac Garcia moving to OLB (Is he the new Christian Wallace? 4* recruit who can’t find a position, never sees the field)

    DAM Questions:
    -Jesiah Irish is fast
-Angie and Marcus share their favorite nicknames for current and former Beaver players
-walkons face an uphill battle to earn playing time and/or a scholarship

    Sprague Interview- Sprague talks about:
    -resetting expectations in Spring
-wanting to see Gebbia take the starting QB spot from Luton
    -DL needs to get better
    -predicts 4-6 wins next season
    -Nemec, and Beaver fans over-reacting
-fans liking Marcus better than Brandon as the show host
    -getting drinks at a bar
    -gambling

Looking forward to next week’s show(w/ Special celebrity guest Kyle, the guy who makes Qdoba burritos at Gill during MBB and WBB games.

    • How many years does Garcia have left of eligibility? Would it be 2? Tibs should have a full cupboard (quality of the ingredients remains to be seen) of players to throw out there on D.

      • Strange, he’s listed as a redshirt Sophomore for 2019. Seems like he’s been around longer.

Was a 2016 recruit originally, but arrived late, left and came back, so I guess his clock must have started later than 2016?

He’s on the official OSU 2016 roster as a freshman, and the 2018 roster as a RS Freshman, but he’s not on the 2017 roster at all. So somehow he only used up 1 year of eligibility in 3 years.

  52. Interesting loophole that these folks found in the admissions process. Disguise kids as athletes and get a more favorable look. Choosing sports where few eyes are watching.

      • Yes, sailing was intended to provide inclusiveness and counter-balance elitist sports like soccer…which requires, you know, a ball and some open space….

Also this example of how to distance yourself from the people you hired and clearly didn’t supervise/monitor closely enough:

        “Read USC’s full statement:

We are aware of the ongoing wide-ranging criminal investigation involving universities nationwide, including USC. USC has not been accused of any wrongdoing and will continue to cooperate fully with the government’s investigation.

We understand that the government believes that illegal activity was carried out by individuals who went to great lengths to conceal their actions from the university. USC is conducting an internal investigation. Donna Heinel and Jovan Vavic have been terminated and the university will take additional employment actions as appropriate.

USC is in the process of identifying any funds received by the university in connection with this alleged scheme. Additionally, the university is reviewing its admissions processes broadly to ensure that such actions do not occur going forward.”

Maybe they can bring back a character guy like Pete Caroll to re-establish integrity.

This is another example of why I love seeing OSU men’s baseball and Women’s basketball win with integrity…

  53. Anyone see this Denver bomb cyclone?
Flying in just a few hours before they ground all planes. This is going to be fun. If I’m alive tomorrow I’ll be shocked.

      • It’s true, it’s true, DIA to Denver is another trip.Light rail only puts sprawl on hideous display. Much as I sort of like Hickenlooper as a pres candidate, I don’t think he has good environmental credentials.

    • I got home at 3am, and the storm started at 8am.
Considering I planned this trip two months ago that’s crazy good luck.
The flight was really good. Pilot did a great job going over and vectoring around the turbulence.

A@A, unfortunately for you, it appears I have some Keith Richards in me. I’m still alive.

      • Saw Trump ordered the grounding of all of those Boeing Air Max planes today.
I dont play the stock market, but seems like a good time to buy. no?

        • Boeing has a P/E of 21 even after the drop. Super expensive stock. Could make a good trade as dumb money buys the dip, though.

  54. Beavs win 7-6.

To whomever runs the twitter account, was the last duck pitcher to beat OSU Cole Stringer?

As of 10:30 no one had correctly answered, too lazy to google and I’m not on the twatters so that’s my best guess. I’m thinking of a 6-4 or 5-3 UO win at a game in Eugene in 2017.

    • Ducks didnt get a W in 2017. Played us 4 times and lost 4.
Last W was May 15, 2016. 6-3 rubber match in civil war series, my cousin Mercer got it in his first game vs OSU. My daughter has a signed game ball in her room. Yes, I had to be a duck fan that day.

  55. Who in the hell is that clown calling the beaver’s baseball game? That radio broadcast was a fucking painful to listen to. That guy has absolutely no fucking business calling a baseball game. Good Lord.

    • Jon Warren. Parker’s sidekick on the Joe Beaver show.

He’s worse than fucking horrible. Consistently gets the score, count and number of outs wrong. Tonight he incorrectly identified Adley Rutschmann as Preston Jones on a bunt attempt. How does that happen when their skin complexion is vastly different nor are they remotely similar in size.

Sunday evening I was driving home listening to the game vs coastal Carolina. When I pulled into the driveway it was going to the 9th with the Beavs down 4-3. I forget who the home team was so it could have been the top or bottom of the inning, but either way the Beavs were coming up to bat.

30 minutes later I had to drive back into town so I turned the radio broadcast back on. The game was tied 4-4 and according to Warren it was still in the 9th inning with the Beavs batting and one out. How does that happen? It took half an hour for the Beavs to score one run and give up an out? Even if there were multiple pitching changes it’s pretty remote.

Turned out it was the 10th inning. Once again he incorrectly gave the wrong inning.

Why his employer (Learfield) continues to allow this fuckery is beyond comprehension. If you or I sucked at our job that much we’d have been shitcanned.

    • Jon was confused by the intentional walk to Adley. He correctly called Jones out on the bunt to try for a basehit and the next time he looked up he saw Adley standing at first base and it confused him. The new college rule is that you can intentionally walk somebody by merely saying so and you don’t have to throw the pitches. It takes some getting used to.

  56. It was an ugly game that earned terrible commentary.

All the warts came out. Lack of hitting outside of three guys. The bottom 6 look uncomfortable up there.

    Pitching was oddly off.

It’s going to be a struggle this weekend. 1 of 3 would be a good outcome. Haven’t heard if Abel will pitch this weekend.

    • Ugly for sure, and long, and cold, and damp.
Errors Sunday and last night are more than a reversion to a mean, they are cause for some concern. 2b and 3b need to improve. That said, Philip is the real deal at ss, and Claunch does a fine job behind the plate, great arm.

One takeaway (OK, 2 takeaways) the uck catcher is way behind not only Adley but Claunch as well. And, the entire OF for the ucks is not impressive at all, weak arms on display last night.

Surprisingly, the plate ump did not expand the zone late in the game, guess he was getting paid by the hour and not the game.

I got a chance to check out Casey’s Corner, very nice. Saw Jon Casey but not Pat. Twenty minute wait for hot coffee, shamed the server into comping a second cup.

A not so surprising quote from Horton, per the GT:
“We set the table we just need to eat more frequently,”

      https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/baseball/osu-baseball-beavers-hold-off-ducks/article_9e9b1d3a-64ac-56ab-b48b-fd8721033f5e.html

  57. Lundeberg tweets:

Pat Bailey said Kevin Abel remains day-to-day. Starting to think we might not see him this weekend at UCLA

At the same time, a comment on D1 indicates some concern among Bruin fans regarding their offense.

Gonna be an important series, apparently no video for Friday’s opener.

Here a link which should get you the UCLA audio:
    https://ucla.leanplayer.com/

    • Could you imagine football or basketball not having any video coverage for a top 5 matchup?

If only there was a network that specialized in meetings between 2 Pac12 teams.

      • Big meeting set for Saturday where Larry Limo Scott gets together with the puppet presidents and their AD’s. Not much hope here that Scott Barnes will rock the boat, maybe Jen Cohen of UW?
