They definitely need to clean up the walks, but it’s probably safe to say Dorman won’t be going anywhere soon. Offense is the problem. Defense ranked 1st.
I’m fine with Dorman staying IF he doesn’t repeat the same mistakes next year with bringing in a closer in the 8th, taking out a pitcher that is untouchable for one that is shaky, etc. It’s a learning year for the program. Still made the tourney. Still can make some noise. Only get knocked out by an opponent that beats you, don’t go home because of dumb mistakes by players/coaches.
Still on the Dorman needs to go wagon. Hard to see how we ended up with those conference stats when we gave up an avg of 6 runs/game since the UC Irvine series. Walks and hit batters are at what I feel is an all time high. Questionable pitching changes…how many times did Joey Mundt have a lights out inning only to be pulled the next inning and disaster struck? Also, Stanford series or UA series put the 5+ era pitcher in a bases loaded situation? Wasn’t a fan of Dorman’s from what I saw in the brief season last year and many of those same concerns continued this entire season as well.
Dorman has a year and a half under his belt with this staff and just had the #8 team ERA in the country. Is there room for improvement? Sure…there always will be. But it’s insane to want to make a change right now with those results.
What is your prediction oh wise one Bill? I could see either team winning. My hunch is Abel will out pitch Hamel. Orange glasses? Maybe but it’s a prediction based on reason, research and watching a lot of college baseball. DBU is a decent team but Hamel is trending down and Abel trending up. Abel has big game experience and success.
I don’t think it’s that easy. Best for us would be a bunch of teams with good pitching and no bats. DBU and TCU both rely on piling on the offense. We don’t win boat races often.
? So having the #17 RPI, great pitching, and great D is an argument when we want to pretend Mitch is a good coach, but if I say I don’t think any of these teams are significantly better than the Beavs then our great pitching, defense, and RPI don’t matter?
Casey says “individuals win games but teams win championships”. Missing Melton obviously sucks but 2018 was without Kwan for several games in Omaha. So if the team fails, that’s got to be in part due to the coaching right?
Hopefully the tourney brings new life but I’ve said it before, you want to be trending upwards heading into tourneys not the .400 clip over the last 6 weeks the Beavs have pulled off. They need to bring their “A” game if they want to win a game much less advance.
Many of the brackets have two ranked teams. We only have one. The two other teams are worse caliber squads than those slots in the other brackets, too. Of course you’re going to have to play tough teams to advance…and I think we got lucky it’s just one.
I would agree they got an easier (not easy) regional because they got overseeded and now have to play a 3 seed vs a 2 seed. But I don’t expect them to advance. There’s nothing they’ve done this year that says, they can rise to the occasion. TCU is the one who got gifted an easy regional. They got essentially 2 three seeds instead of a true #2.
It’ll have to be like the bball team and guys just start having career games all at once.
Agree with Bill here — this is not a gimme regional. Recent behavior is best indicator for this team, they’ve been losing games they should be winning on late game mistakes….basically backing-in to the off-season. We can only hope for a 2007-esque turnaround (Jorge Reyes? and Joey Wong?) where the no-names play lights out. Most likely not going to happen without Pat Casey as coach….but you never know.
Saw Daniel Susac won freshman of the year. Too bad we lost him, legacy player on top of it, with the coaching change. Can’t say I blame him though…would much rather work with Yeskie than Dorman.
I dunno Dorman has pro experience and has a good track record developing guys. I’d give Yeskie the edge for coaching fuck up kids cause he seems more like a Swift kick in the nuts kind of coach. Me personally I have plenty of motivation to do better I don’t think I would like playing for someone like Yeskie.
Feel a bit bad he could never cash in on football. I am sure he is happy but selling fiber amendments for asphalt can’t be as good as playing in the NFL.
Reggie Bush is on the ballot for the first time. Apparently they shy away from controversial players like him and don’t typically induct players from the same school in consecutive years. USC QB Carson Palmer apparently got in last year.
“Other first-timers on the ballot included quarterbacks Andrew Luck of Stanford and Kellen Moore of Boise State, Penn State star linebackers LaVar Arrington and Paul Posluszny and former California running back Marshawn Lynch.”
If Haas could make it, it’d be great for him and a nice accolade for the program to point to besides the two Bilentnikoff (sp?) awards (Brandin Cooks being the other). While Haas put up great catch numbers, yards, and pretty impressive YPC, I don’t think his TD numbers were crazy high. But offenses were different then and he did transition from Derek Anderson to Matt Moore.
Who did he develop that we know of? Not being snarky or argumentative, just curious. Pro experience is nice, but doesn’t mean that translates to being a good college coach or vice versa. Looking at the top 30 pitchers in the conference for era and we had Abel and Hjerpe. Abel obviously is still dealing with recovery from the TJ surgery but he definitely looked better in the prior years. Hard to say if that’s the injury, or the coaching or perhaps a combo of both.
My guess: DBU scores between 4 and 6, Beavs could end up with either 2-3 or 8-11.
Abel’s improvement shown at the end of regulation continues; outcome depends on the bats.
I think the Beavs have a better chance vs teams with good offenses and avg defense/pitching as opposed to good defense/pitching and avg offense. DBU fits that description, ranking #19 on on base percentage, #48 in ERA and out of the top 50 in fielding %.
FYI…Beavs come in at #5 in fielding %, #8 in ERA, and………wait for it….#16 in batters HBP!
Elephant in the room is allowing the opponent to get on base with free passes (errors, HBP, and walks). I think the Beavs even had a strikeout passed ball that cost them dearly in the ?Arizona? series. Haven’t seen that under coach Casey before. Anyways, play hard, give em hell, and make ‘em earn it should be their mantra.
Except for bad timing, errors haven’t been a killer.
Surprisingly, Beavs aren’t even in the top 50 for walks allowed per nine innings, neither is DBU. TCU comes in at #43 while Grand Canyon and the quacks are in the 30’s.
But, HBP, that’s the killer. Abel has 17 while the next offenders are Hjerpe at 9 and Frisch and Sebby (only 18 innings) both at 8. I believe Abel has gone the last three starts w/o a HBP, counting on that continuing.
Wild pitches?…..Abel leads the team with 15, again, that seems to be improving lately.
Seems like a make or break moment for OSU baseball. Get swept, and the Beaverbaseball downward spiral gains momentum that I dont think they will be able to recover from for most of the next decade.
No pressure!
Blazers losing sucked, but was predictable.
I feel the same about OSU baseball this season. It’s just not a good team. I tend to agree with Turdburglar on the issues being more offense related than pitching. We lost several early season Friday games where Abel had good showings but had no run support. The past few weeks have been pretty bad too, especially with no Melton in the lineup.
Problem with OSU baseball is we’re seeing other Pac12 programs pass us by and leave is in the rearview. OSU is losing it’s cachet as a program.
I see nationally, other teams’ fans still picking OSU to be in their Omaha 8. Nobody locally believes that will be the case. Our national reputation is still fairly strong, but that won’t last if we’re swept in a regional we’d normally have no business getting swept in.
He’s probably doing it so his companies can buy up as much as they want at a lower cost. Then flip flop and come out smelling like a rose.
Seems the bigger hazard is the rich wall street scum that don’t like regular people getting their slice through crypto. They’ll do everything they can to keep the $$ up top where they they think it belongs.
We’ll see. They have to report on their balance sheet. I just find it sad the guy chosen as the savior to the world is 60 years old and trolling crypto dorks. Like, shouldn’t he be working on saving the world instead of this??
Tight zone but it’s been consistent for the most part. Abel just doesn’t have it today. Good job by Dorman not making a pitching change and walking 4 straight batters.
This has been the issue all season. Bring in a guy who dominates for an inning then yank him for no reason. Or, leave a guy in way to long and the damage is done.
Frisch has a lot of arm side run. Very effective vs lefties but hit the righty.
Power arms might be the answer today. They aren’t catching up to any of the 95 plus from Frisch. The only single was a seeing eye single that he was super late on.
what a disgrace. I’m turning the game off. will check back in a couple of hours to see how bad it got. So now we know what Canham era postseason play looks like.
Well looking at our batting, stranded runners, and homers compared to other teams, seems like having a few more lbs wouldn’t hurt anything, especially if we’re not going to play small ball to move runners.
Oh for sure. But he was a smart player, seems to still like OSU and OSU loves the incestuous hires. But yeah, not suggesting OSU hire him right away but if he works his way up maybe it is an option.
LU is smaller than the high school I went to. 500 or so students and their drawing card is as a way for foreign nationals to gain entry into the US with student visas and for US students to pile up student debt for a semi-worthless degree. Glad GP is back in Oakland, but I doubt they’d be competitive against most high schools in town.
I imagine some boosters who forked over thousands to the program with Casey, might be more willing to voice their “concerns” about the direction of the program now. Really bad second half fade. Don’t know where the recruiting is, but bringing in a stud pitcher and hitter who can grab the team by the scruff of the neck would be pretty good. This year’s team seems to have a lot of good “pieces” – but not a strong core.
I think our biggest issue is we just don’t have any star hitters. Our last great team had Rutschman, Grenier, Madrigal, Gretler, Ober, Armstrong, Kwan, Larnach. Armstrong and Ober are the only starters left from that year nad are arguably our better hitters. Rutschman, Madrigal, Grenier and Larnach are all making waves in the MLB now, they were freaking stars.
If you asked me who I wanted in the 9th to get a run in with 2 on this year I wouldn’t really know who to pick…Ober? Claunch? Boyd? Idk.
yeah he was far and away out best hitter this year. 99AB – .404 Average, 25 RBI, OPS of 1.163.
We have plenty of good hitters. Meckler, Claunch and Boyd are all over .300 with over 50 AB. Armstrong, Forrester, Ober, and Dukart are all .270 or above. Good hitters but no stars.
2018 Ruschman was over .400. Madrigal and Kwan were both over .350 and Larnach, Claunch, Grenier, Gretler were all over .300.
Who knows man. I like Mundt. He was really rough early but his last couple outings have been really nice. Not bad for a sophomore but I will say his ERA is bad from early issues.
I dunno, but you’d like to keep his pitch count down for another game or two of relief. Another reason Abel should not have started. No way with his history would he be ready for any work on Monday. Whereas one of the other starters might have gotten you a couple innings.
Really frustrating to have some of our best hitters and upper classmen have a shot to bring in runs and not get it done. Claunch, Ober and Armstrong all had a shot with RISP.
Sad. Just 1 part of the story this season. Stranding runners. Ober with good contact but perhaps the bunt in that spot is way to go? Hindsight 20/20 but you gotta do what you need to for at least 1 run.
IMO pulling Mundt was smart. 19 pitches he should have another outing sat/sun and mon if the team gets it together. Plus less hitters that get a chance to preview his stuff. And Mully can try and preserve the one run deficit, if he can’t do that maybe he won’t play after this.
Man I hope some bats develop or we have someone coming in. I really like some of our freshmen like Forester (158AB,.272, 30 RBI), Boyd (51AB,.314, 8 RBI), Dernedde (16AB, .250, 2 RBI).
Got some decent bats in the Sophomore class to with Fuchs (51AB, .235, 10 RBI), Melton (99AB, .404, 25 RBI), Gretler(81AB, .247, 23 RBI), Meckler (121AB, .331, 25 RBI), Froemke (26 AB, .308, 6RBI), Dukart (157AB, .268, 23 RBI).
Theres a strong core there but we need some power and reliability upgrade.
So are we a golf and soccer school now? Gotta make our way through the elimination bracket. Been done before, just don’t think this group has the horses for it. Def not a 2 seed.
This team doesn’t do the little things to win in the tournament….every team is a winning program (unless they are fluke), Beavs have shown they are unable to hang with the better programs in the conference all season — lots of close games and series, but no cigar….today a perfect display of the season long issues.
Only won 2 series in the last 6 weeks. 2 games vs loyola and USC series. We were lucky to have an easy schedule the 1st half the season to pad the stats. How they gave us a 2 seed is beyond me. Sure RPI was high but we didn’t win many of those games outside of early season games vs GCU and Gonzaga. If we played them now, I don’t think we have the same result. They’re trending up, we’re at like .400 for the last 6 weeks.
Probably because of Beav pedigree and fun to watch? That last CWS win was of the charts….lots of people tuning in and watching highlights of that comeback. Beavs are looked at favorably from a committee myopic perspective….although we all know the issues/dirty laundry, etc….no reason to be2 seed other than that. Beavs will lose favoritism at this rate….sigh!!!
Shameful display for a once proud program. Was it 6 consecutive walks by the same pitcher? How is that even possible with this program? Where is the pitching coach tearing into these guys for not simply trusting the defense and pitching to contact?
Sad to see it but this is the end of the run, and OSU will not be relevant any longer in D1 baseball. Casey performed the miraculous to win 3 titles and by all rights had a 4th one in hand in 2017.
Canham is trying to replace a legend by overthinking and being too patient with every decision. Where is the urgency and fire?
We have seen the problems all year, yet nothing changed week to week in strategy from coaches, players approach to hitting, pitching consistency, bullpen rotation, starting rotation, intensity and competitiveness. I am not an insider, but this seems to be a passive team and reflects the staff passivity as well.
This loss is a nice summary of the season, good try but just not enough to win another close game. Get 1 clutch hit and you win. How many games had this element to the post game story? Somehow they were in a lot of close games to lose so many in such predictable fashion, but they failed in so many things within their own control it was like an ongoing self inflicted limitation to their own success. But somehow the staff was never able identify the problems, disappointing…
We’ve mentioned before that Canham seems to be a golly geez type. Not saying he needs to get thrown out of every game but gotta show some fire and enthusiasm. Half the time they show him on camera he looks Iike he’s taking a nap. If we continue next year with the same issues, hit batters, high walks, runners stranded, etc they better make some changes else we get too far down the road and it turns into a rebuild vs taking over a program that had just recently won it all. Personally, I’d start with Dorman but oddly enough, many people seem to be happy with all the walks and hit batters we’ve had over this season and last. Hope they can at least get a win this post season but not looking like it.
Not sure many people seem happy with all the walks and hit batters we’ve had over this season and last.
Seems some have pointed out the lack of run support and the high ranking ERA, that doesn’t mean they are happy.
I’m just tired of self inflicted screw ups, HBP, WP, and BB fall into that category for me. Really hoped Abel had turned the corner with the Stanford game.
Turns out Greg Street didn’t need to be assigned to this regional after all.
Now watch OSU fans lose their shit when he’s behind the plate in our next game.
We clearly don’t need Greg Street behind the plate to walk people but I guess we could always have more walks if he gets the nod. Maybe go for a post season record.
I’d be down with that, but not likely to happen. Weird comment of his in the article linked above. Said that they hit a few more people than they wanted to. How many guys did he want to hit? 50 instead of 70+?
No idea. I’m not a Dorman fan, but hasnt it mostly been Yeskie’s recruits who have been having trouble under Dorman? Seems like the newer guys have been more consistent, but guys Like Abel and Mulholland have been either hot or cold, but received significant time based off of reputation.
I could totally be off base with that, as I havent watched every game.
Not sure how you fire a coach in the middle of a regional. Unless there was a blow up internally, the timing just doesnt make sense. Maybe the day after the regional is over, but what if we pull some wins out of our ass and advance? Just go with no pitching coach?
These new pitchers might still be Yeskie recruits…they commit so early now. Sure they had to hold on to them with the coaching changes but I think most of them would still be Yeskie’s? I agree, a coaching dismissal right now would be odd…wait until season is over.
Abel didn’t pitch well which is the primary reason we lost. Free passes and untimely error by Dukart cost us again. Microcosm of the season. Had a chance to overcome this with timely hitting but failed to do deliver. Not sure how coaching staff really plays into all of this. Need to beat McNeese this morning and then hope DBU can beat TCU. Our best chance to win this regional is to win 2 today and then beat DBU twice tomorrow. Based on season trends, DBU pitching drops off significantly after top 2-3 starters. Their depth is an issue. That said, it’s a huge uphill battle for a team that continually beats itself.
Coaches are culpable for continuing to hope that Abel will be different than he has been all year. Don’t give them a pass for starting him all year on Fridays and then throwing him out game 1 postseason. Anyone following this team has to see the trend of a 2 month slide with every series beginning with a loss. They can’t overcome it mentally, or physically, although they get close, ut then make enough errors/mistakes to ultimately lose again.
How do you not place some blame on the coaches for not pulling him after 3 consecutive walks? Yet they allow 3 more? Even at the high school level 6 consecutive walks is not acceptable. What does that do to the team behind him watching batter after batter walk and coaches do nothing.
Abel is not the same pitcher he was before surgery but everyone seems to hope it happens in this series or next series…
I agree that all hope isn’t lost to still advance, but no way can you let the coaches skate out of culpability for this situation.
Does ESPN not do a strike zone box for college games? Would that not be in the “amateur spirit” or are they protecting the umps? Looks like I haven’t missed much by not watching any games the second half of the season. Pitcher walking batters and too many non-competitive at-bats when the Beavs are on offense.
I just watched the highlight from the Tennessee/Wright State ending. Tennessee should hope they don’t face Wright St again because the guy who hit the walk off grand-slam was pretty much breaking every unwritten rule of baseball in one lap around the bases. Perhaps their next opponent should dial up the “slipped out of my hand” fastball for such nonsense… Classic SECESPN hype machine with a 2 minute highlight reel of one swing.
If you can’t throw strikes. how in the hell do you make it to D1. Is that 18 walks in 14 innings.
WOW and 10 runs given up and I think 8 are because of walks. Sorry but someone has to answer for that.
Why McDowell? I mean 2 outs but he’s struggled offensively all year in the games he’s played. We just gonna clear the bench to allow peeps to play and hope to win in the process?
It’s really the only reason I have hope in the post season. Not many teams have as good a bullpen as us so if we can survive the starters our ‘good’ bats can get the job done.
Looks like the ump crew is working both games each day and rotating clockwise, as normal.
Street was at 3b in Beavs first game, at 2b in the TCU/McNeese game, and 1b in Beavs game today.
Gotta figure he’ll be at HP in the TCU/DBU game later today.
We may not see him behind the plate even if we play 2 tomorrow.
Well. We almost won and did win despite loads of free bases. If we have some games go even average we have a shot vs DBU atleast. I think our day three pitching staff is probably better than most in the country and game 4 bullpen might be in the top 5. If pfennings can stretch out 6+ innings and save Selgado, Mundt, Burns and Lawson for game 4 I feel pretty good. Idk who else is fresh but I feel really good if we can get 3+ out of Selgado, dude has a 0.42 through 25 innings and has stacked up 3 wins.
I think it’s already a success. That said I think the future will color it. If we improve next year it will be seen as a decent first year for Mitch as he learned the position. If we take a step back it will be the Canary we should have paid attention to.
I think this season is a success either way, time will tell rather Canham can keep the team at a national power level but anyone acting like that is already over is a hyperbolic fool.
Hats off to Forester today too. 2 hits, 2 walks, 1 rbi and forced 27, holy crap, pitches. Wearing pitchers out with long at bats is a very viable post season strategy for this team.
His vision and reflexes, (and anticipation) must be incredible to be able to make contact so often and sometimes in awkward positions. He had a hit on an outside pitch about a week and a half ago where it almost looked like he was throwing the bat.
His swing on that HR looked effortless. Great clip, thanks.
Lineup shuffling, any takeaways from this: “Canahm said that Dernedde’s inclusion in the lineup was a product of the consistency that he has flashed since the fall. By the time the Pac-12 season began to wind down, Oregon State players had started to voice their belief in Dernedde to Canham and asking the coach to give him a chance at regular playing time.”
Fine line between letting players run the team and taking charge as HC. For me, one quote doesn’t mean much but I wonder how much of the juggling of lineup has been at the request of players. ??
I mean that can be spun both ways. Great coach to listen to the players and use all information available.
I think the shuffle mostly has to do with so few upperclassmen. They don’t totally know what they have. Some guys may practice great but have trouble in game. Some may perform much better in game than in a batting cage.
Watching the DBU-TCU game I’m pretty sure we are the team to beat. If we don’t beat our selves with free bases I think we win. We would have best DBU badly without the 6 straight walks.
1) Both DBU and TCU have weak bullpens. If we can run up the pitch count in the starter our average to good bats become great against their bullpens.
2) Our opponent tomorrow TCU has burned 7 pitchers in the last two games. Some will be able to do more work but only the starters have looked good.
3) Our bullpen is deep and can compete with their hitters if you expect 6+ runs.
4) Our bats should look good vs TCUs remaining pitchers. DBU hadn’t burned as many but looking through their bench they don’t have a ton of guys left who can stump our bats.
5) Beavs get better as a series goes. We have lost almost every 1st game this year but still managed a .6 record and winning record in P-12. While it’s not our standard I doubt many teams are that resilient.
Agree but still hard to imagine Beavs not beating themselves for 3 straight games. But yes, I think we’re the best team in this regional and if Abel doesn’t wet the bed, it’s actually a pretty easy ride.
I think everyone needs to come to grips with reality and face the fact that Mitch is our Baseball Coach and will be going forward. We are in the Post Season and still have the potential to make it to Omaha. Time will tell whether this team will improve along with Canham’s Coaching and recruiting. In a recent interview, Casey made it clear that he would not be returning to Coach OSU Baseball and that Canham is the new Head Coach. Casey also did not discount the possibility that he may Coach again in the future, which implies that he would be at another University. I have Friends in the know that say that LSU has been courting Casey. I think that would be a great opportunity for him but those whining to bring back Casey need to move on. GO BEAVS!
I don’t yearn for Casey’s return as much as I fear that Canham simply may be in over his head, using the wrong methods for decision making, and surrounded by a suspect coaching staff, at the collegiate level. Assumptions seem to be managing in the minor leagues makes running a college dynasty rather simple.
Good to be in postseason, but soft expectations from some on this sight bring a reflexive disgust and the shadow of Mike Riley. Such apologists for Mitch at this early stage of his career is concerning. Low expectations will bring low results….
Your comparison to Riley is so far off base (excuse the pun). Riley was like a 15th year Head Coach after two stints at OSU. He was floundering and unable to even get the Beavs to a bowl game. I used to be a Riley supporter but he completely lost it during his final few years at OSU and I agree with your assessment of soft expectations for him from many OSU Football Fans. Canham is only into his 2nd year and has the Beavers in the post season already. Will he get us to Omaha? I don’t know but you have already judged him that he won’t. That is an unreasonable expectation on your part, not a low expectation on other’s view. Statistically, the Beavs are one of the best teams in the PAC-12. That may not have resulted in the number of wins we all would have liked to see but it was enough to get us into the regionals. I think both the 2006 and 2018 teams lost their opening games to have to fight through the losers bracket. Did you want Casey gone too? Canham has one of the best recruiting classes coming in next year maybe we should see what he can do before we toss him out?
Have you guys read about MLB’s cheating problem (pitchers)? Interesting stuff that explains all the no-hitters, spin rates, and why the game is unwatchable now. And I wonder how much of this is happening at the college level.
I don’t think it focuses enough on the lack of ball in play, runners on. But there are good points and laughs in it:
“Anytime you start poking around under the hood of vague platitudes like “respect for the game,” you quickly notice how they all seem to prop up the authority of men like Tony La Russa. Unwritten rule books are pernicious because they’re an attempt to govern culture and control behavior, and they get written by whoever is really in charge. To Tony La Russa, showing respect for the game means showing respect for him, and the way you show respect to Tony La Russa is by doing what he says. That was the real sin here. It wasn’t the home run; it was the insubordination.”
…
“The sub-2.00 ERAs were back—Maddux followed up a strike-shortened 1.56 ERA in 1994 with a full-season 1.63 in 1995—but this time, MLB didn’t reduce the mound. That would’ve been ludicrous. Cy Young himself would’ve rolled over in his grave. Instead, the league let hitters gobble up steroids like Skittles until juiced-up sluggers wrecked every record in the (written) book. It worked, because as Maddux himself famously lamented, “Chicks dig the long ball.”
There are other valid discussions about moving the mound back. I think if they move the mound back 1ft and get rid of these substances they can then ditch all the hokey rules to shorten the game that are just ruining the game. Do that + robot umps and you have the ultimate game. Right now it’s a total mess. The solutions are obvious, but they’re messing around with treating symptoms.
Hahaha…whatever you say. Robot umps are coming so you’ll get the absurd stupid game you desire.
But it is a stupid idea and you will just be mad at the robot when you disagree instead of the human.
But you’re gonna get your wish. That’s likely when I stop watching. Replay has already done enough damage to the game. But since Manfred hates the sport he oversees all that stupidity is coming
Yeah, his bat has definitely cooled since the first 3 weeks or so of the season. Good defensively though so still surprising he hasn’t seen any play time at all.
I get you mostly watch to validate your opinion that the coaching is bad but your just wrong.
1) Catcher throws and gets the out, no score. Or catcher throws and you give up the score.
2) Catcher holds and they get the steal, runner never goes inning continues. Runner goes you get in high stakes pickle.
It’s a risk either way 2 men in scoring position or end the inning. Claunch thought he could make the throw, it it was accurate (plenty strong) inning over. It was a performance error.
This isn’t MLB buddy. The talent level and speed of players is different. You don’t see slow dudes stealing 2nd in the MLB, they are faster than most college players in any given year. The velocity of a throw from home is not appreciably different except with truly absurd freak catchers. Its a toss up and the catchers choice based on their understanding of the players and what they see.
Its also a situational issue. Your pitcher is struggling, letting a guy steal vs taking the risk to end the inning like a hero is worth thinking about.
If the catcher thinks he can catch second you throw. The out occurs before the run scores. If Claunch had been on line with the throw no run scores and inning over.
It’s a baseball crap shoot with no definitive answer just like going for it on 4th and 3 on the 45.
Have we scored a lead off runner yet this tourney? Seems like we always waste our lead off runner yet the other teams seem to be doing it pretty regularly against us.
For anyone who hasn’t been watching much this year this is how the game will probably go.
1) We won’t lead tell late. We will not hit well against their starter. We need to wear him out with long at bats as much as possible and get to the bullpen. We just had a HBP to get meckler on so hopefully that messes with him.
2) We won’t be competitive batting UNTIL their starter is out.
3) Pfennings has a super hard task today. These guys are on par with the best hitting teams in the Pac-12. His job is to outlast their starter (preferably in to the 6th) with less than 4 runs scored.
4) I repeat, our offense will look shitty until we get their starter out.
5) If we can’t get their starter out before the 7th were in trouble. If we do it will be a fun competitive finish.
Agree, this game is not going the way I would hope for us to win the regional. We could still win this game with the bullpen but unless we get some real hero work from Selgado or another relief guy its gonna make it harder to win another game.
Yeah I can’t tell what kind of shape he uses for the zone but it sure as fuck isn’t a rectangle. Some kind of worm shaped polygon that moves around after each pitch.
Theres atleast one dude from OSU there thats a dieing howler monkey. Everytime something goes well for us it sounds like hes getting stabbed to death in the stands lol.
Look at the ball movement left to right in the last 20 ft or so. The ball Andy swung on moved about 8 inches inside in the last 20 ft. That shits not hittable. A really good batter might sit on it or if hes looking for a different pitch. Pretty sure Andy was just trying to foul off a high ball.
This inning could not have gone better! Pitch count up to 70, King in big trouble, 2 runs scored, 4 hits. If they can get King out in this inning its a boat race and our pitchers are WAYYY better after King is gone.
Pfennings with a great game today against one of the best batting schools in the country. I would have loved 1 more inning but 100 pitches and a tie game is everything we could ask from the guy.
Their bullpen might struggle enough that we don’t know their pitchers name before hes out.
King looks like the homeless guys you see walking around Portland every day with that scrappy beard and hair on the back of his neck creeping out of the collar
King pulled with bases loaded and 1 out in the 6th. This is very good news boys. This guy has a 3.74 ERA, 15 walks and 33 strike outs. This is against lower level of competition too. Remember TCU tied for winning their conference and we were 6th. We have our shot and Pfennings did enough work to save some pitchers.
I wonder when ESPN is going to learn that making secondary sports like baseball free is the way to go. By making it free they get way more eyes on the ads.
I think its a good move. They will have to get away from the cable model eventually. Young people are just saying fuck it to sports if they have to pay for cable.
LOB is a deceiving stat. Our 2018 team had a lot of LOB too, but after severable runs scored….the whole lineup was clutch….especially with two outs.
This team needs Jacob Melton in a really bad way!
Interesting situation next inning. Burns is obviously not this good, so you have the law of averages working against you. Yet at the same time, hard to pull a guy throwing this well.
I would pull him. Burns at 35 pitches could be used again in game 5 if we need him. Our bullpen has loads of weapons available to cover the 8th and 9th.
First muddafuckas!
Beavs lose to DBU, beat Mcneese then lose the next elimination game to either DBU or TCU.
Down vote away degenerates.
For all the Dorman haters…here’s how the Beavs pitching staff ended up against conference foes…
Pitching Stats (Conference Only)
ERA – Tied for 1st
Runs Allowed – 1st
Hits Allowed – 1st
Strikeouts – 2nd
Walks – 9th
They definitely need to clean up the walks, but it’s probably safe to say Dorman won’t be going anywhere soon. Offense is the problem. Defense ranked 1st.
I’m fine with Dorman staying IF he doesn’t repeat the same mistakes next year with bringing in a closer in the 8th, taking out a pitcher that is untouchable for one that is shaky, etc. It’s a learning year for the program. Still made the tourney. Still can make some noise. Only get knocked out by an opponent that beats you, don’t go home because of dumb mistakes by players/coaches.
What are the ranks for hitting?
Beavs are basically middle of the conference in offense…
Hitting Stats (Conference Only)
Batting Avg – 6th
SLG – 7th
OBP – 5th
HR – 6th
K – 11th
BB – 3rd
Runs – 5th
Maybe the hate comments can work the same with baseball as it did with basketball. Hate away!!
That’s a great plan!!
Beavs win 7-4
^^ the orangest of orange lenses.
Bill said last thread that it’ll take 10 runs to win the game. I don’t agree at all but I guess we’ll see soon.
I don’t agree with that, either. I think we need to score 5 runs per game to win.
If we score more than the other team….I think we win.
#1 Key to the game
DBU 47 OSU 1! Let the negging bring us a victory
DBU averages 9 runs a game against inferior pitching. I’d give them maybe 5 or 6 against us, maybe fewer if Abel has a good day.
The big question is whether the bats can keep pace.
I think the Beavs got handed a gift/easy Regional and should advance. If not some heads should roll.
I don’t think it’s that easy. Best for us would be a bunch of teams with good pitching and no bats. DBU and TCU both rely on piling on the offense. We don’t win boat races often.
You think they “should” beat the #4 team in the country when we’re missing our best hitter?
Yes.
Isn’t this like saying we should beat Oklahoma football without out QB and if not someone gets fired?
King of clickbait angry but Damn
Why do you think it’s an easy regional? What makes you think the team can win 3 or 4 games when they have lost three straight series.
Actually, we really just need our pitching core to make it easier on the offense.
Bats don’t have to be great and don’t need to have career games, we just need to be efficient and take advantage of getting RISP.
Seems like it’s the other way around,
Offense can take a lot of stress off the pitching staff and defense.
OT: Mike Haas on CFB hall of fame ballot again. Apparently was in 2020 too. Hope he gets in this time!
Pfennigs definitely trended up over the course of the year and I believe his numbers have been better this year than previous years.
From Dorman’s bio:
Taijuan Walker, Pablo Lopez, Art Warren, Emilio Pagan, Freddy Peralta, Zach Littell and James Paxton.
Andy Armstrong got robbed not even getting HM All-Pac-12
Also weird that Abel was named HM and Hjerpe gets nothing
He’s gone from the Terminator to Nuke LaLoosh….back to Terminator next year.
Seems like a make or break moment for OSU baseball. Get swept, and the Beaverbaseball downward spiral gains momentum that I dont think they will be able to recover from for most of the next decade.
No pressure!
Blazer loss hangover? It’ll be okay. Step away from the ledge.
Overreact much? You sure like to carry Angry’s water.
I’ll be watching the entire game, btw. Should be fun. ;)
How many mg’s this time?
0. No fun during the day for me.
BTW, Elon Musk is a bigger loser than Swammi. The guy has nothing better to do than actively crash crypto markets? 60 year old troll. So pathetic.
He’s 49 lol, maybe he will mature with 11 more years of unimaginable wealth?
Games on 1190am for Portland
Underway! Let’s gooooooo!!!!
Anyone else getting “page not found” when trying to play the game on ESPN3?
Yeah I just went with radio
Tough start. 24 pitches and not out of the first inning yet. Double. Homer. Hope our offense shows up.
Abel’s already rattled
Gregg street at third today. Parker said he hoped he never would have to call his name again when announcing umpires for a game. Lol
How he’s still employed is beyond me. Lol.
There’s a massive shortage of umpires nationwide.
I volunteer but I’ll need a good recliner and some glasses.
Boyd hitting second?
Starting to feel like a boat race
Man, they’re hitting Abel hard. 2 fly outs but deep.
Was about to say the same. Every guy who has made contact has hit it deep. Plus a few have walked already
Fits their scouting report. Power threats up and down the lineup.
Built more like an mlb lineup.
Was just thinking that every time I look at the batter coming up they have like 9+ homer’s. Lol
New strategy. Dont let them hit. Just walk everybody
We just don’t have any offensive weapons
Abel offspeed stuff looking good. Dormans needs to call a good game today and then Abel needs to execute. Little less nibbling on the edges.
Oh boy. We load the bases with 1 out and bring in the 5+ era guy? Please baby Jesus, get us a double play.
Can’t watch right now but checkin the play by play and it looks like the zone is incredibly tight, like a ball width tighter than normal
Abel’s just all over the place. He’s actually getting some calls he shouldn’t.
Tight zone but it’s been consistent for the most part. Abel just doesn’t have it today. Good job by Dorman not making a pitching change and walking 4 straight batters.
Please put Townsend in already. 74 pitches in 3 GD innings. 6 walks.
That’s an out
so mulish of Canham to keep Abel in there. this guy has no judgment, truly
This has been the issue all season. Bring in a guy who dominates for an inning then yank him for no reason. Or, leave a guy in way to long and the damage is done.
Exactly
Wow, really looked like abel tagged him out
Glad there’s replay bc that’s a clear out. Abel lucky he didn’t get run there
We got Cain, not Abel today. Luck O da Beav’s!
What’s the all time record for walks in an inning in post season play?
By a single pitcher, that is
Is there any reason to have Abel still in 2ith 8 walks in 3 innings? I don’t get it.
The only guy that’s warm is shaky at best?
Why pick him to warm up then? lol
Exactly. Not sure what Dorman is thinking.
That was a very bizarre, but totally valid example of Luck o da Beavs
Or just a microcosm of the season
We’re lucky it’s only 3-1. Awful coaching/decisions.
We’re down 3-1 because of bad pitching. We played Abel Roulette and lost.
Bringing in Frisch here was absolutely the right call
Agree, he’s loading the bases more efficiently. Abel was dragging this game out
Haha
Beavs making sure DBU leads the tourney in LOB
Frisch has a lot of arm side run. Very effective vs lefties but hit the righty.
Power arms might be the answer today. They aren’t catching up to any of the 95 plus from Frisch. The only single was a seeing eye single that he was super late on.
So much for that….
It was a 94 mph fastball. I said 95 plus!
Off speed…
We have an interesting hitting strategy. Take fastballs right town the pipe and then swing at anything off the plate with two strikes.
seen a lot of that all year
Getting ugly.
Bad news Beav’s today.
Okay so if we pitch bad, field badly and hit badly how do we win this one? Just looking at the stats?
We need their hitting coach
And their hitters
And pitching coach. Think their starter has less pitches than both Abel and Frisch…or at least it’s dam close.
Should have made Abel the second starter. Could have sold it as a “saving the best pitcher” move to save face even. Guess hindsight is 20-20
what…why did he keep Frisch in? Looks like were going for worst decisions possible. Maybe we should just bunt every AB?
If you can’t score runs does it really matter who’s pitching?
only if the score is 0-0
I miss Yeskie….
what a disgrace. I’m turning the game off. will check back in a couple of hours to see how bad it got. So now we know what Canham era postseason play looks like.
I’m not impressed with anything. For being a “mental” oriented coach, Mitch sure didn’t inspire these guys.
Note even Parker waxing poetic about the past is cheering me up
I feel like a lot of these teams we face their players are like 6’2″ 215 lbs and our guys (outside of like 3 or 4) are 5’9 180. Do we lift bro?
Since when can the gym grow your height? And, since when do you need to be huge for baseball?
Helped a lot in the roid era lol
Well looking at our batting, stranded runners, and homers compared to other teams, seems like having a few more lbs wouldn’t hurt anything, especially if we’re not going to play small ball to move runners.
Looks like most of our big guys are either not regular starters or hurt.
Froemke 6’4 205
Melton 6’3 200
Valero Sanchez 6’2 180
Thomas Dukart 6’2 183
Jake Dukart is our biggest starter atm 6’1 200. Next biggest regular starters are McDowell 6’1 189 (very rough year hitting) and Justin Boyd 6′ 195#.
Our team is also absolutely loaded with FR/SO. We have 3 Seniors, 8 Juniors, 13 Sophomore and 20 Freshmen.
GP taking a coaching job at Lincoln University in Oakland.
Thats very interesting.
Maybe OSU can grab him if he does well and Tinkle reverts to the mean.
Sure if he proves himself for a few years I would be all about it. I don’t want to pick up a legend if he hasn’t shown he has the chops though.
Claunch? Boyd? Idk.
Melton until he got hurt. He was hot for those 3 weeks prior, but yeah, hard to say who you’d want to be the go to person.
yeah he was far and away out best hitter this year.
Their pitcher could easily go the distance. 66 pitches.
Apparently Fuchs wasn’t impressed that time. 3 Run home run. 6-5 top of the 7th
Whelp, he probably won’t now. That was a huge bomb by Fuchs.
Fuchs yeah!
That was a Fuching hit buddy!
Brutal AB by Ober
So if Mundt kicks ass…… does he get pulled after three batters?
Whoa….
19 pitchs for 6 outs is another way to keep the pitch count down lolol. Joey feeling it.
Well, he did his part and kicked ass. Your move, Dorman
HP ump??? Armstrong should be on with a walk.
Welp, 2 on, 2 outs and our best current hitter is up. Can Claunch do it? His RISP is .254
Nope
Come on dudes. 2 on with no outs, lets get this.
It’s going to happen this inning.
Forrester has quietly had a really good day
Gutsy call to bunt with a hot hitter but taking the DP off the table and the game situation it made sense
So in the Angrybeavs School of 20/20 hindsight, was it risky but made sense coaching OR stupid overthinking/panic coaching?
I dunno, I think a lot of baseball decisions are overblown. It is a wonky game.
Not sure if the sac bunt was the right move.
Not sure if sac bunt was the right call there.
Sorry, my original post didn’t show up initially
I liked it.
10 walks and a error. wow!
Who’s their closer, and how good is he?
Should have let Fuchs hit… hindsight 20-20
Or had Ober suicide squeeze
Really frustrating to have some of our best hitters and upper classmen have a shot to bring in runs and not get it done. Claunch, Ober and Armstrong all had a shot with RISP.
Sigh
Sad. Just 1 part of the story this season. Stranding runners. Ober with good contact but perhaps the bunt in that spot is way to go? Hindsight 20/20 but you gotta do what you need to for at least 1 run.
Well every replay review has gone the Beavs way
IMO pulling Mundt was smart. 19 pitches he should have another outing sat/sun and mon if the team gets it together. Plus less hitters that get a chance to preview his stuff. And Mully can try and preserve the one run deficit, if he can’t do that maybe he won’t play after this.
I don’t disagree. Mully should be able to close a game for 1 inning and he did.
Really love what I am seeing from Mundt.
Awful loss.
Making the post season doesn’t make you relevant?
I mean losing a regional as the #1 overall seed had to be worse right?
That was probably on the players. Most likely. Or lack of fire by the coach. Or maybe the pitching coach. Er, bad luck. Or warts, or something.
Don’t know how it figures in post season but normally the umpires rotate clockwise. Street would move to 2b next.
Oh God. Angry was right again. Shoot me.
Eggers up with a piece on Dorman written before Ft Worth. Plenty of coach speak and very little accountability.
https://www.kerryeggers.com/stories/with-rich-dorman-talking-osu-pitching-on-eve-of-fort-worth-regional
Hit more guys than he wanted to? How many was he hoping for???
Rumor I heard tonight is that Dorman has been shown the door. Any truth to that?
Can no pitching coach be much worse than what we have now?
Yes
These new pitchers might still be Yeskie recruits…they commit so early now. Sure they had to hold on to them with the coaching changes but I think most of them would still be Yeskie’s? I agree, a coaching dismissal right now would be odd…wait until season is over.
Even if some of them were recruited by him, they didnt actually get coached by him.
Untrue
At least we’re not the only PAC team to lose. That would’ve also been a bad look.
I think letting Abel walk 6 in a row is a pretty bad coaching choice. If a pitcher is having a bad outing yank him and give the next guy a shot.
That was unbelievable
Is Casey hurt? I know his bat has been struggling but he’s very good defensively and has the experience some of the newer guys don’t.
Forrester really making the pitch count go up
That runner was not safe, blown review
Who’s impiring second today and who’s the umpire looking at reviews?
Their pitcher barely broke a sweat that inning.
He could throw underhand and get the same results. Less stress on the arm.
O hits thru 3. Oh boy.
Our hitting is bad. It’s one of several problems, but it’s a significant problem. It could be bbq time real soon.
Looks like the bashing worked :)
Holy shit. What else can they F up?
I shouldn’t have asked…
Does ESPN not do a strike zone box for college games? Would that not be in the “amateur spirit” or are they protecting the umps? Looks like I haven’t missed much by not watching any games the second half of the season. Pitcher walking batters and too many non-competitive at-bats when the Beavs are on offense.
Walks and wild pitches. Same old story. Dorman needs a raise!
Looks like they’ve figured out this pitcher the second time through. Need to make it a big, demoralizing inning and put McNeese on its heels.
And as I say that, they bunt twice which results in two outs. It’s too early in the game to waste at-bats.
What in the hell has happened to Armstrong
First time I’ve seen Froemke. Big dude.
Bad luck with the bunts this inning
Wow.
Bad form, not bad luck. Gretler made contact like 2 inches above the ground.
Yeah, would have gotten better pitches. No need to be anxious there
Clutch hitting this inning, despite the bunt failurea
Let’s hope it’s enough, it could have been a 7 or 8 run inning. I’m not bunting this early in the game.
Like this tre obregon guy. Sweet stache and a great flowing mane.
You’re in luck, I think he is single.
Good start for the Beavs today at least…
The guy who hit the Tennessee grand slam was former Beaver LHP commit, Drew Gilbert
That Forrester called strike out was garbage. Greg Street, is that you?
Hjerpe not getting the same call on the exact same pitch. Can see why Canham had that conversation with the ump
Who said they be an umpire if they could sit in a recliner? You are needed.
Im ready to serve, just get me a 6 pack and 25 mg to straighten out my judgement to match NCAA standards.
Here we go with the walks..
Robot umps please.
If you can’t throw strikes. how in the hell do you make it to D1. Is that 18 walks in 14 innings.
WOW and 10 runs given up and I think 8 are because of walks. Sorry but someone has to answer for that.
I’ve been calling for Dorman to go but you’d be surprised how many people apparently like to lead the league in hit batters and 3rd or 4th in walks.
Why McDowell? I mean 2 outs but he’s struggled offensively all year in the games he’s played. We just gonna clear the bench to allow peeps to play and hope to win in the process?
Fix is in if this is overturned
Let’s get some more good hitting and put this one away.
Gotta get 9 outs. What is this team made of, we shall find out.
Didn’t try at all to get out of the way
Nice time for a HBP!
And a wild pitch to follow up.
Is Mcneese the worst team in the Tourney?
No, we are…
What in the shit
Get the strike three call instead of a phantom foul tip and we are still up a run. Claunch was not happy. Mitch get tossed, it’ll be good for ya.
Mitch got tossed?!? I didn’t hear that
Get vs got.
Reading is hard.
Ofc the guy who’s our new clutch man has the hardest name to spell. I dub thee K-Dred! 6 RBI, damn!
Damn, is Dernede our best hitter, in the 9 hole?
Forgot the 3rd “d”. Dernedde.
Thanks champ
Bring in Mully for the 8th and 9th
Beavs finally taking advantage of a weak bullpen.
It’s really the only reason I have hope in the post season. Not many teams have as good a bullpen as us so if we can survive the starters our ‘good’ bats can get the job done.
And our “ace” isn’t our best starter. I have more faith in our #2 and 3 guy than Abel. Could be a high score morning.
Good Abel is our best pitcher and nigh untouchable. Struggle bus Abel is our #3 starter. Bad Abel is a relief guy.
I hope he takes one more year to get his control back.
Greg Street strikes again.
Can’t say Greg Street didnt try
Street should not be a D1 umpire
Fucking Greg Street…
Hope Street is getting plenty of taunting from Beaver fans in attendance
Dam I don’t know that I can handle watching Mully in pressure situations tomorrow.
Why Mullholland?
Get him enough pitches you aren’t tempted to use him tomorrow
Did Street move to HP??
Looks like the ump crew is working both games each day and rotating clockwise, as normal.
Street was at 3b in Beavs first game, at 2b in the TCU/McNeese game, and 1b in Beavs game today.
Gotta figure he’ll be at HP in the TCU/DBU game later today.
We may not see him behind the plate even if we play 2 tomorrow.
That’s a win. Can we do it 2 more times? Would really help to have Pfennings go 7+ tomorrow.
3 more times
Watkins was really good today.
What is a successful season at this point? CWS or busy? Supers? Forcing a game 5 to get the entire staff postseason experience? Game 4?
I think it’s already a success. That said I think the future will color it. If we improve next year it will be seen as a decent first year for Mitch as he learned the position. If we take a step back it will be the Canary we should have paid attention to.
Win this regional
I think this season is a success either way, time will tell rather Canham can keep the team at a national power level but anyone acting like that is already over is a hyperbolic fool.
Now for 3 wins in 3 day! Go Beavs!
Hats off to Forester today too. 2 hits, 2 walks, 1 rbi and forced 27, holy crap, pitches. Wearing pitchers out with long at bats is a very viable post season strategy for this team.
Madrigal with his second HR…402 feet…ran the bases like a veteran this time…the first HR he admitted he ran like it was a triple!
Thing of beauty
https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/1de5e16a-72d9-449f-b792-d39a9350c83d.mp4
Yes it was. So solid in all aspects of the game.
Tonight’s game is starting late due to lightning in the area
A.cancelation wouldn’t really be in our favor either. We want them to be low on pitchers.
Late start might cut down on rest for these two going into Sunday.
Grasping at straws here!
Lineup shuffling, any takeaways from this:
“Canahm said that Dernedde’s inclusion in the lineup was a product of the consistency that he has flashed since the fall.
https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/baseball/osu-baseball-kyle-dernedde-becomes-beavers-latest-unsung-hero-helps-keep-their-season-alive-at/article_18fdeddf-702e-50ff-9ae5-d403a848bf03.html
I mean that can be spun both ways. Great coach to listen to the players and use all information available.
I think the shuffle mostly has to do with so few upperclassmen. They don’t totally know what they have. Some guys may practice great but have trouble in game. Some may perform much better in game than in a batting cage.
DBU struggling against TCU. Pitcher has gone 6. All TCUs scores off of homers.
DBU blows up in the 7th to take the lead. 7-6.
TCU burning through the bullpen
DBU gets another one home. Playing with alot of emotion. 8-6 DBU, top 9th
TCU on it’s 5th pitcher. Not good for a weak bullpen. 169 pitches
DBU on it’s 3rd pitcher. 140 pitches
That’s final. DBU takes it 8-6.
Yeah idk if they can. It’s just nice that they aren’t totally over matched like some series this year.
Shouldn’t expect a win necessarily but you should at least expect a competitive game vs TCU
Young team and the ace underachieved this year. I’ll hVe some patience for Mitch.
And for Dorman?
It’s going to be really awkward the next time we face LSU and they have to announce that Pat Casey head coach Mitch Canham is taking on Pat Casey.
Haha.
“Casey made it clear that he would not be returning to Coach OSU Baseball and that Canham is the new Head Coach.”
Casey is the anti-Riley. Wins championships, doesn’t come and go when convenient for him.
Now, about the AD position….
Have you guys read about MLB’s cheating problem (pitchers)? Interesting stuff that explains all the no-hitters, spin rates, and why the game is unwatchable now. And I wonder how much of this is happening at the college level.
I’d say it’s probably not happening at Florida…yikes!
https://www.ncaa.com/game/5843263
No, but saw an article the other day about how it needs to change. “Baseball Is Broken. The game is supposed to be fun.”
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/06/la-russa-mercedes-astudillo/619080/
I don’t think it helped that Maddux and a host of other “control pitchers” were consistently given strikes three inches off the outside corner either.
Here’s a YT describing the issue. Skip to like the 4 minute mark.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KnYv5LNpNc
Very interesting, note that around 17:30 the increase in HBP when using foreign subs is discussed.
Robot umps are a fucking terrible idea.
Nope. Nobody cares about your nostalgia. Get the calls right.
Can’t wait.
I know you can’t wait for your first rant about how poorly the computer is doing.
I’m sure you’ll blame Canham.
Zzzzzzzzz.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ONKF7vbaBcc
Ball literally over batters head.
Robot umps!!!!
Lol
Yeah, and Tesla’s drive into things. Guess we should have stuck with the horse and buggy.
Is Casey hurt? Hasn’t played at all and not in line up today.
As far as I can tell only Preston Jones and Jacob Melton are injured…..physically.
I don’t think he’s hurt…just not hitting.
Yeah, his bat has definitely cooled since the first 3 weeks or so of the season. Good defensively though so still surprising he hasn’t seen any play time at all.
Since he faced good pitching…
Is that, Greg Street behind the plate? May the lord be with us today.
How the hell is that guy still in baseball? What a joke.
His name should become a verb: “We got streeted.”
ESPN3 seems to be free today. I’m able to watch the TV for this on their site.
pfennings averaging 10 pitches an out. Might be a big bullpen day.
What on Earth…a guy just stole home. On the coaches – gotta tell the catcher not to throw that.
Mitch apparently forgot to pass that on. Been awhile since he was behind the plate.
You shouldn’t have to tell the catcher not to throw. Claunch just f**ked up. That’s on Claunch not coaching.
That’s on Claunch’s little league coach
I get you mostly watch to validate your opinion that the coaching is bad but your just wrong.
1) Catcher throws and gets the out, no score. Or catcher throws and you give up the score.
2) Catcher holds and they get the steal, runner never goes inning continues. Runner goes you get in high stakes pickle.
It’s a risk either way 2 men in scoring position or end the inning. Claunch thought he could make the throw, it it was accurate (plenty strong) inning over. It was a performance error.
No. If you watch MLB or any higher level they almost never make that throw, and for good reason.
Better play is to throw to 3rd.
Not coaching issue.
Fell for the ‘ol double steal. You let him take second right? Don’t need a double play.
If the catcher thinks he can catch second you throw. The out occurs before the run scores. If Claunch had been on line with the throw no run scores and inning over.
It’s a baseball crap shoot with no definitive answer just like going for it on 4th and 3 on the 45.
28 pitches in the first because the guy comes out amped up (missing high with everything). No coaching (or catcher) visit to calm him down.
A visit in the 1st for any coach with a starter would be weird.
Have we scored a lead off runner yet this tourney? Seems like we always waste our lead off runner yet the other teams seem to be doing it pretty regularly against us.
We usually do not score runners in the 1st inning at all. We scored lead offs in the 4th and 7th against mcneese
Was being a little sarcastic with my comment but it just feels like we struggle with it.
Totally agree. Our bats are average to good not great this year. Getting runs in is hard when you don’t have a reliable great to take care of biz.
Error on a routine ball. Nerves all over.
Is that really Greg Street behind home? What an awful strike call…lol
Okay, weathered the nerve storm without too much damage. Hopefully they settle down and the Xanax starts to kick in. #SportsPsychologist
Whatever they said in the buddy meeting seemed to work. That was nice pitching to close it out.
Sounds like there’s a Karen behind home plate. Yikes.
Greg brings that out in most fans!
Good public service announcement. Don’t see pfennings going that deep unfortunately. 52 pitches already and still in 3rd with no outs.
Agree, this game is not going the way I would hope for us to win the regional. We could still win this game with the bullpen but unless we get some real hero work from Selgado or another relief guy its gonna make it harder to win another game.
“Greg Street behind the plate”…oh God. I was hoping you guys were joking.
Yeah I can’t tell what kind of shape he uses for the zone but it sure as fuck isn’t a rectangle. Some kind of worm shaped polygon that moves around after each pitch.
They might try to double steal again.
Might as well since we don’t know how to play it.
We picked a guy off on a double steal yesterday. You see what you want to see angry.
I agree with a catcher that has to hop the throw its not the right call. With Claunch its worth the shot.
Clauch has a 30% CS rate. That’s average. I could see the call being justified if he was around 40%.
That was a huge win. It was ugly but only giving up 2 was a big deal.
If were gonna break this guy we really need to do it here. Maybe forester can pull another 10 pitch AB.
Forrester looks like he needs a bigger bat. Dude is a beast.
Forrester really developing. Hes nearly got his Average into .300 despite having it drop into the .230 range in the first quarter of the year.
Their guy getting Streeted.
man this crowd is chirpy! Starting to sound like a hocky game.
A buncha Karens and Darrens.
Theres atleast one dude from OSU there thats a dieing howler monkey. Everytime something goes well for us it sounds like hes getting stabbed to death in the stands lol.
Pfennings needs out of this one with less than 90 pitches on the count.
Great inning for Pfennings. Kept pitch count at 87 too. If he can scrap out 1 more that would be great.
Anyone listening to Parker know whos warming up for the beavs?
You should watch it on ESPN3. Beats Parker.
They showed the guy warming up, but I didn’t catch who.
Verburg
Bats need to come alive other than GF. He has been clutch.
Hoping we can get 5 batters through the rotation on this one and force King to 70 pitches. We need him out in the 6th.
Great inning there. Hard hit ball but fairly low pitch count and still fooling guys. It feels like they are down 5-0 but still got a chance at 2-0.
Thats a good summation of most games this season haha.
Wow…Armstrong…lol. What on Earth are you swinging at??
This guys sinker is mad nasty. I couldn’t hit it with tennis racket.
Interesting. I was just thinking he’s not very good. 4Era, doesn’t throw very hard…meh.
K-Dred with a great freaking hit. I love this guy from Tualatin!
Damn. If only Armstrong didn’t swing at a ball that nearly hit him.
Army shoulda been on there and scored.
Whatever happens, don’t get Streeted.
Tied game baby.
Sa……weet
Let’s go boys!!!
Meckler is our #2 RISP guy behind GF. Did a great job there.
This inning could not have gone better! Pitch count up to 70, King in big trouble, 2 runs scored, 4 hits. If they can get King out in this inning its a boat race and our pitchers are WAYYY better after King is gone.
Way better approach vs this average pitcher. TCU should take him out. Glad they aren’t.
Sending 3 or 4 guys to the pen right now. Be nice to get at least 1 more run here.
And we hit into our 3rd double play. Good lawd. Tie game at least but dam, would’ve been great to get 1 more.
Crap. Have get the ball in the air.
Give Pfennigs 1 batter at a time. Anyone gets on yank him.
Not a fan of this move. Time for Mitch to prove me wrong.
Okay okay. Good job, Mitch.
Pfennings with a great game today against one of the best batting schools in the country. I would have loved 1 more inning but 100 pitches and a tie game is everything we could ask from the guy.
Their bullpen might struggle enough that we don’t know their pitchers name before hes out.
He was good.
King still in, we need to make them pay for pushing his pitch count.
2 on, 1 out…….Army is overdue.
Oob for prognosticator of the game.
Wow. Really poor base running. That line drive was clearly down.
Bunt please!
That’s off the table now…
King looks like the homeless guys you see walking around Portland every day with that scrappy beard and hair on the back of his neck creeping out of the collar
Except he throws fastballs instead of handfulls of his own feces.
Please baseball gods! Deliver a WP on this dude’s first offering.
So close
He’s really trying! LOL
Both Burns and Verburg have had time in the pen, do ya give Jake one more batter?
I don’t think so. He has over 100 pitches and did everything he needs to. Trust the bullpen.
This guy pounds more dirt than the Army
TCU pitching coach takes angry’s advice, visits at 2-0 with 2 outs.
Good coach. And it paid off. Looked like a new pitcher after that.
Fuck
Wow. Feels like that could be a major shift to this game. We had the momentum with 1 down and bases juiced. They get out and have the momentum now.
Burns making these guys look very mortal. Guy has some serious attitude out there, love it.
Momentum: Beavs
Absolutely sick pitching from Burns.
That was nice. Clinic.
That was tough
Like the fire and emotion he’s bringing too.
He has great stuff, but control was always his issue. That was a nasty inning from him!
Burns looking nasty!
He pitches like hes literally trying to punch them in the face from the mound.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Street isn’t awful today. Just proves he took the fix vs LSU.
t7, top of the order, got to continue momentum
49 is 12 pitches in and the announcers are already talking about command. yikes
Hly shit! Boyd okay?
Lead off runner again. Can we do something? Oh damn, Boyd. Hope he’s ok
Looks like hes alright. That was a very unfortunate bunt to the face.
Yes, get hit in the face and you’d hope to at least be on base but looks like it hit the bat first unfortunately. Glad he’s ok.
GD whos the howler monkey at the game lol
Darren.
You know fans are classy when a guy gets demolished to the face and their first instinct is to scream foul ball. We playing the duckies or something?
Who is the asshole screaming in the stands?
Darren.
Captain Froggie Mc Asshat
So lucky it caught the helmet. Easily could have beem his face.
I cant believe he’s back up and ready to bat again. Shock?
he may have saved a trip to the hospital with catching the ball a tiny bit with the top of the bat.
Just sanity check again for everyone. Our bullpen is MUCH better than theirs.
New pitcher has a 4.4 ERA with 28 IP. 11 walks, 32 strikeouts. Should be plenty of pitches in the zone.
Yet again we can’t score the leadoff runner. Dam
I wonder when ESPN is going to learn that making secondary sports like baseball free is the way to go. By making it free they get way more eyes on the ads.
I think its a good move. They will have to get away from the cable model eventually. Young people are just saying fuck it to sports if they have to pay for cable.
Yeah. I cut cable in ’09 and will never go back. It’s so obvious this is the model. These old companies are so slow and resistant to change.
9 hits and an error, should have at least 5 runs right now!
LOB is the story of our season man.
LOB is a deceiving stat. Our 2018 team had a lot of LOB too, but after severable runs scored….the whole lineup was clutch….especially with two outs.
This team needs Jacob Melton in a really bad way!
I agree but its been so consistent this year.
We may need to stop comparing to 2018 at some point. That team could be one of the best college baseball batteries ever much less beaver.
Totally agree!!! That team’s hitting/patience is the benchmark for ALL of college baseball for many years to come!
Burns just made their hottest batter look like a high schooler.
Our cheesehead is dealing today!
“one and two and a hopeless swing by humphries”…GD ESPN Announcer lol
Interesting situation next inning. Burns is obviously not this good, so you have the law of averages working against you. Yet at the same time, hard to pull a guy throwing this well.
I would pull him. Burns at 35 pitches could be used again in game 5 if we need him. Our bullpen has loads of weapons available to cover the 8th and 9th.
He’s looking pretty good. I think you stay with him as long as he’s this hot.
“Burns out of the bullpen like he stole fire from Olympus”
Burns is en fuego…
Dare I say….burned?
Season summary: one aspect of the team is strong and the other two are not. Today it’s the pitching. Decent hitting, some bad defensive errors.
But still in it like we have been most of the season. Wild
Casey strikes out…ugh
But there is no joy in Mudville—mighty Casey has struck out.
Duh. Casey PA’s end in K’s more than any other outcome.
Casey needs an eye appt. He swings and misses more than anyone ever.
Joe “K”-sey
Shit
Street is a random call generator.
Something tells me this game is going to come down to our lack of power and TCU is going to win 3-2 or 4-2 on a HR.
Totally possible. We have done what we can to have a shot. If we can’t get lucky with a horrible pitcher or get clutch for some reason its a problem.
High LOB #’s are a hallmark of teams with little power
Selgado out at the mound. I don’t see them having much success, hes a nasty man.
As long as his control is on most definitely.
Hit Salgado in a bad spot…the glove.
Crap. Alligator arm by Selgado
If we escape this it will be a miracle. Gave em a free bag.
Classic beavers.
Lol. They’re chiding OSU for the steal of home. Rightfully so. Could cost them advancing.
Good move to pull Salgado. Control isn’t there today.
Man that Texas crowd is annoying AF. Even for a bunch of drunk people.
Texas sucks a dick bigger than the State.
Angry, you better not be right again or I’m blowing my head off.
Must be why they have such wide fucking mouths to holler out of.
Great grab by Claunch, that was way too close.
Greg Street time. Greg doesn’t work OT.
Leave in the hot pitcher!!!
Well atleast Joe can field, shit yeah!
Covered alot of ground there. Nice out
Clutch grab by Casey.
Whew
Come on, Greg Street. Their fans have been mocking you all game!
Their closer doesn’t walk people and looks like a baby with a mullett?
But he hits people!
Casey saves the day!………….or merely prolongs the agony.
That is a weird motion…
Ok, yet another leadoff runner. Can we do it?
Yea we can. Yuge
This pitcher’s hair is straight out of Panteen commercial. So fluffy.

The face and neck are so soft…
Sideshow Bob pitching for TCU.
K-Dred with the Steal!!! I love this dude!
I think you may have spelled his name wrong. Check with CJ
Wow. Huge SB…damn.
yes
Wait…why bunt?
Really wish Forrester was in the 3 hole
That’s what she said…
Yeah baby
Fuck yes! Boyd you GD Unicorn!
Now we have to close it without getting Streeted. Insurance please.
Nice baserunning by Drednendneneneee
Makes it even better when hes a life long OSU Mega fan. Watching a young guy living his dreams in the regional.
Sure hope good Mully is up today. Guy is nails when hes on.
I’d save him for later
Id use him and have Mundt take the closer spot in game 4.
Verberg?
This pitcher looks like the brother in Get Out.
Bruh great call hahahahaha
My god, so true
Google is so racist.
I searched for images of “Get Out Movie Brother” and it mostly comes up with pictures of the black guys in that movie.
Actuallly, it’s the duckduckgo search engine, not google
Wait, why is this guy closing?
Because he gives up homers?
Not sure but he doesn’t give up alot of free bases. Hold on to your pants cause he does do a lot of contact.
Hope he delivers. Two years ago he was awesome
Awesome again.
Saving Mullholland for the start in game 2?
I really have no idea who starts in game 4. Abel likely takes game 5 if we get that far.
The Prior Lake MN kid?
I wish they hadn’t put in Salgado. He could have started for a few innings.
You could probably go the experimental route and cobble together several 2-3 inning stretches.
That’s a good guess actually.
Beavs win.
See you guys for game 2. I’ll put up a new thread.
yeah, Verberg was sick. Big titties boys!
Same game with DBU, wear out the starter and burn them down with the bullpen.
Gotta admit, Dorman’s pitching crew has been pretty solid outside of the first few innings of Day1
Try again Angry with enthusiasm, Beavs win!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow. Great win!
Nm, you got it.
Florida and TCU top seeds, lose two and BBQ! LOL
