General Thread / Baseball

Have at it, guys. I’ll be gone for about 3 weeks on a bikepacking trip/vacation in Arizona. Baseball will be heating up in that time period, so might as well make this a baseball thread in addition to a general thread. I’ll be in Tuscan, so about 2.5hrs from the Beavs…probably won’t be able to make it, but I’m going to keep it in mind. Anyone going?

If anything interesting pops up, admins feel free to start a new thread, but short of that, old down the fort!

Go Beavs.

  1. Men’s baseball well regarded nationally in preseaon, WBB ascending and watch worthy, Bray outperforming off season expectations given conference musical chairs, Go Beavers!

Have you guys heard of gray moving inside? I think that sucks because there’s a pretty big drop off after him. He deserves to if that’s why he came back but I don’t think it’s going to help his draft stock much. Tackle is the harder position and plenty of guys switch in the nfl with no experience. There’s even talk that Fuaga might start out at guard. I personally don’t have any trust in any of the other tackles so far and was hoping to see another transfer added.

    • Sounds like fun. Hope the weather cooperates. My wife is a huge NASCAR fan so going the other direction down south for speed week and all the races. I’d rather be in AZ watching the Beavs or down in Mexico on a beach.

On another note I think Pat Casey will be in KC next to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Well done Coach Casey!!! And thank you for the thrills and making Beaver Baseball a national power!

      • You guys must live close to Wisconsin since thats the only place you can buy spotted cow. Yep, asked to bring some home all the time. Enjoy!!!

        • I live in Minneapolis, but will be in Wisconsin at a friends cabin for a Super Bowl guys weekend/drinking fest this weekend. Have to remember to buy the spotted cow ?. Excellent beer.

          • Yeah I figured you lived in the Twin Cities area close to the border. Be safe traveling down to AZ. Hopefully you’ll have an opportunity to bring your “tailgate” vehicle to Omaha in June. Boy, the hotels really gauge you there for the CWS. Maybe you charge a couple to stay with in the motor home. Up the price for excessive snoring, farting or burping!! ;o)

  3. How’s the starting rotation looking? Are we optimistic with the pitching staff, is it a weakness heading in? Is it still wait and see? I just don’t know much about the pitchers.

    • Think it’s better than last year if people can stay healthy. Kmatz is healthy and May is supposed to have some really good stuff in he can get his control better. I’d assume Hunter is also in that top 3 rotation. Not sure who the ace will be. I think based on pure tools May might be the best of those 3 but I think he’s got the most control concerns so I could definitely see Kmatz/hunter being the #1 guy but not sure there’s a true #1. Coaching staff is probably fine with any of those 3 being the “ace”. That leaves Lattery and Lawson as the likely 4, 5 guys and potentially Jimenez rounding out that top 6. Will be interesting to see Mundt back and how he might fit into all this if he’s fully recovered and can stay healthy. This staff definitely seems better than last year but I doubt we really see the days of a true 7 inning guy anymore. Not sure it’s the focus of the coaches but also maybe just how the game is now. Regardless, for the Beavs to really take that next step to Supers and ultimately Omaha, they’ll need the starters to give much more than the 3 or 4 innings they averaged last year. Our offense can be scary good but I still think the path to Omaha is built around a solid pitching unit so RD needs to earn his paycheck this season.

  4. “The Beavers on Tuesday debuted at No. 7 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, giving them a coveted spot among the top 10 in all five major college baseball polls.

OSU is ranked as high as No. 5 in the Baseball American Top 25 and as low as No. 9 in the Perfect Game Top 25. It also landed at No. 8 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 30 and No. 7 in the D1Baseball Top 25…”

    • I guess! Tough, productive, and smart.

“I don’t think I had every yelled at him before, but I did after that second fumble,” Logan recalled. “He just looked at me and said, ‘I’ve got this, coach.’ He never wavered and picked himself up and pulled through… That’s the type of player he is.”

Hatcher finished the game against Punahou with 263 yards.

“People are relying on me to do my job,” Hatcher said. “I just had to find that inner strength and come through for the team.”

Hatcher has more than a dozen college offers at the moment, many of them from Ivy League schools. Hatcher is a standout in the classroom, too, and hopes to study law and follow in the footsteps of his father, who practices family law in Rancho Cucamonga.

“I’ve always looked up to my father, and I’ve seen what him being a lawyer has done to help provide for me and my family,” Hatcher said. “It would be an honor to follow in those footsteps.”

  5. Martinez and Bray on loyalty:

“Oregon State star running back Damien Martinez did the unthinkable after Smith bailed for Michigan State.

    He stuck around.

As teammates were bolting for the portal and conference realignment was threatening the Beavers’ foundation, the two-time all-Pac-12 first-team selection decided to remain at Oregon State and stay true to a pledge he made before Smith left. The loyalty has been invaluable for Bray and the immediate future of the program.

“It’s unbelievable,” Bray said. “Like, it’s everything. On a professional level, when you’re trying to do a job and a guy like that sticks around. But also on a personal level. It’s refreshing to see a guy not be bought by some other team.

And make no mistake, teams tried to buy Martinez.

A source told The Oregonian/OregonLive in November that programs had been using back channels to try to entice Martinez to leave after the season, dangling lucrative NIL deals in front of him as a carrot. But he ignored the offers — which came even though he never entered the portal — and stayed committed to the school that believed in him when he was a lightly recruited high school player in Texas.

In the end, Martinez had more loyalty than the coach who signed him.

“There were plenty of teams that offered him a bunch to leave,” Bray said. “So it’s just refreshing. He’s a great guy to lean on to show what you want this place to be. That’s the type of guy we want and what this place is all about. It’s been great.”

“Martinez said he never judged any of his old teammates for leaving, but he felt like he had to stay with Bray and help the coach continue the momentum “we’ve built the last two years.”

“Everyone had their own reason to leave,” Martinez said. “We were all in different situations, so everyone had their choices. I couldn’t do nothing but support those guys, because we’re chasing a dream and taking the steps — whatever they may be — to reach those dreams and goals.”

  6. Durant and Tuagi have both signed. Only one I haven’t seen officially yet is Freauff but if his visit the other week was any indication, it’s just a formality. Haven’t seen any of the talking heads from other Beav sights mentioning anything out of the ordinary so it would seem anything happening today beyond those 3 players would be a surprise. All the recent offers by coaches I’ve seen on X have been to 2025 and beyond as they were all primarily out recruiting the last few weeks.

      • Yeah… he plays against terrible competition, but it’s not like his team is all that either. He stands out because he makes some freakish plays, just to compensate for his QB’s inconsistent delivery.

If you remember Herman Moore, he plays a lot like him, with his catch radius and ripping through arm tackles for yac.

Herman Moore, btw, was a K and a 3rd string TE in HS. He was also a 7′ high jumper. Legend is that in his last HS game, a UVA assistant coach was there to watch his son play QB for the other team. Moore only played as K, until the final play of the game. It was a one-score game, and a hail Mary was upcoming. His coach put him in and told him to just out jump everyone and knock the ball down. He easily out jumped everyone, but he decided to just catch the ball, instead. The UVA coach went to talk to his coach, and his coach said something like, “Well, he’s a decent kicker.”

But that UVA coach saw something in that one play, and he offered on the spot.

  7. Chip Kelly apparently interviewing for Seachickens OC…interviewed for LV and WA too…on shakey ground RE job security and maybe not thrilled about going to B10?

  8. Dasxhel has an article on OLive that is titled OSU footbal roster updates and its locked behind the damn pay wall. What I could see before being blocked out is Skyler Thomas should be seeing some light duty this spring and Stover hasn’t decided on whether he’s returning or not.

    • Try this:
      https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/oregon-state-safety-skyler-thomas-could-see-light-duty-this-spring-olb-cory-stover-remains-undecided-on-return/ar-BB1hWA3h

Spring practice dates are March 5, 7, 9, 12, 14 and 16. Then there’s a 2½-week break for finals and spring vacation, with practices resuming April 4. The remaining dates are April 6, 9, 11, 13, 16, 18 and 19. The spring game is Saturday, April 20.
Oregon State’s Pro Day is Monday, March 11. A large group of draft-eligible Beavers are expected to take part.

      • Poor guy must have really destroyed that knee. Hard to imagine coming back from such a horrific injury and having the confidence in your knee to play at full speed again.

        • I’m 6 years removed from a major knee surgery. It will never be the same as it once was and I will never have the same range of motion again. Ever.

Granted he’s young and I was in my early 40’s when my injury happened. That does make a difference.

I do hope he bounces back. Point being, seriously knee injuries are tough to bounce back from and sometimes it takes longer to heal and more PT than for someone else. Age, genetics, performing surgeon and sometimes just luck all matter.

        • I’ve had knee surgery before and come back to play. It takes a while to not think about it and sometime you get phantom pain. But once you get over that hump, it’s really no longer an issue.

He’s got top notch resources available to him for rehab and he’s an athlete. He’ll make it back in some form.

          • His injury will take over a year since he tore all the ligaments and the patella tendon and they’ll all heal at different rates. ACLs are still a minimum of 9 months. He has to be diligent in his rehab and not go too fast.

I’d say if he really wants to play again, the target would be fall 2025. Unlikely for spring ball 2025.

    • That’s a different article, by Joe Freeman, not Daschel.
      Some good stuff there too.
Martinez said he never judged any of his old teammates for leaving, but he felt like he had to stay with Bray and help the coach continue the momentum “we’ve built the last two years.”
“Everyone had their own reason to leave,” Martinez said. “We were all in different situations, so everyone had their choices. I couldn’t do nothing but support those guys, because we’re chasing a dream and taking the steps — whatever they may be — to reach those dreams and goals.”

    • Here’s a 5 minute read:
      https://finance.yahoo.com/news/disney-beats-on-earnings-boosts-dividend-as-streaming-losses-narrow-210518309.html

      Some highlights:

Dividend increase, $3 billion buy back plan approved by board.
Announced a firmer timeline for the company’s over-the-top (OTT) ESPN streaming service, revealing the platform will launch fall 2025
The development comes after news broke Disney’s ESPN will team up with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and Fox (FOXA) to launch a new sports streaming service, which is expected to debut sometime this fall.

The sports segment generated an operating loss of $103 million but still saw a 37% improvement compared to the $164 million loss it reported in the year-ago period.
Linear networks, meanwhile, continued to struggle. The segment fell 12% year-over-year to $2.8 billion while operating income for linear came in at $1.2 billion, a decline of 7%.

        • was just going to say the same. They laid off a ton of their on air talent to shed salary last year. So of course they didn’t see quite the same level of operating loss.

        • 4
          3

Sports are in trouble. It’s almost as if the more they try to force us what to like, care about, or watch, the worse it gets for them. This P4 is going to be a disaster. Lunatics in the SEC country and gambling degenerates are the only ones who are going to watch.

          • It’s funny because no one has expanded access to smaller teams, smaller sports, smaller markets, etc. than ESPN. The amount of content on ESPN+ is staggering.

But at the end of the day, the serious money lies in getting everyone to watch one thing so you benefit from the network effect and FOMO. That’s the only way media really scales beyond its current size or maintains its current size.

  9. “Bray said there will be some subtle changes to spring practice, such as a deeper dive into specific situations. There are a lot of new names on the roster, but Bray said that doesn’t mean spring practice will look like 2018, when there was a heavy emphasis on teaching. “There’s going to be a lot of just playing football. That’s the best way to learn,” Bray said.”

    https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2024/02/oregon-state-safety-skyler-thomas-could-see-light-duty-this-spring-olb-cory-stover-remains-undecided-on-return.html

    • Interesting since it’s going to be pretty much a new system at least on offense. Guys are going to have to put in a lot of work over the summer with the playbook.

But maybe he’s also trying to weed out guys when the spring transfer portal opens. Beavs still over the 85 limit?

  10. Seeing some mocks that have Fuaga moving up after senior bowl performance. One has him as high as #7…for reference, Isaac Seumalo was RD 3, pick #79.

Is Fuaga the best OSU linemen in the program’s “modern” era?

  11. 1
    2

I’d be shocked if he went in the top 10, and bet he ends up inside in the NFL. I want my tackles to be more athletic and unless he surprises me at the combine, I think he falls late first/early second. This may sound silly, but look at his ankles. Elite NFL linemen are tall but have smaller frames, it is why all these retired linemen lose all this weight, they carry the weight to play the position but have leaner more athletic frames.

Fuaga is thick and would be 300+ regardless if he played football.

Those are big lbs, big dbs, and big rbs, not to mention a couple of big OL. Lets hope they are all productive and this is the start of Bray becoming the Pat Casey of the football program at OSU.
I actually think Bray may be the closest coach we have seen in football side that resembles Casey’s perspective and approach to recruiting to Corvallis and having a genuine expectation that you can win in Corvallis, and being able to articulate it passionately.

    • For Exodus Ayers, which stat do you all like better?
      1. Intercepted 12 passes as a junior
      2. Returned six of the 12 interceptions for touchdowns

      • I saw that too. Amazing.

        Six pack of pick-sixes.

        Talk about changing momentum….

If the kid has six pack abs, he should tattoo a “6” on each one….talk about a pick-6 celebration in Reser, just pull up the front of your jersey while you hoist the chainsaw in the other hand…

…and the tattoos will look great with s middle age+ belly!!

  12. watching mbb game – beavs scrapping – problem is they always look as tho they are scrapping. Just b4 halftime, Pope scores with one of his beautiful shots, WT does my favorite thing and calls a time out to break up the game flow, with about a minute in the half. Speaking of WT – the unhappiness of the past few seasons shows.

  13. I don’t know how Mike Parker doesn’t blow a gasket during basketball games. He’s seen the same thing over and over. It must be nauseating. I’m sure he’s counting the days until baseball.

  14. Franke has left the program. Wonder if he decided to hang the cleats up after all the injuries? Guy seemed like the weight program had made him into a monster. Might’ve been this last spring game where he looked huge on the edge. Feel sorry for him that he had so many injuries.

  15. FOOTBALL: Assistants coaches salaries posted by Daschel.
Devan is significantly higher than any other non-coordinator. He is gonna be watched closely by anyone interested in the program. Recognizing that the OL is very, very important doesn’t mean that he is worth that inordinate number. He needs to prove it.
BTW, anyone have his salary history?

A few examples of pay: Coordinators=$750k, Devan=$600k, others range from $250-390k

  16. UCLA must just be a terrible environment for football. Chip Kelly jumps ship to Ohio St.

Can’t recall any other instances where a P5 head coach leaves for another P5 job as a coordinator. Kind of a self demotion. Significant pay cut for sure.

  17. Imagine being tOSU and getting bailed out of OC Bill O’Brien, to replace him with OC Chip Kelly. Pretty lucky!

Weird for Ryan Day to be HC over his former boss.

    • As a coaches kid I can attest that coaching-circle families roll deep and once the old guys have had their big run they LOVE being assistants for their guys. Even my HS coach is back as an “analyst” after several years of being retired because one our teammates from 20 years ago is now the head coach.

Chip is all about X’s and O’s and theory-crafting how to run a program (diet, sleep, training, team-building, etc). He hates the political position of being head coach and all that comes with boosters and recruiting. The fact that he’s been shopping around OC spots in the NFL leads me to believe he’s done chasing HC glory (for now) and just wants to be responsible for the parts he actually enjoys.

      • 4
        1

At Ohio St, he can pay the players he wants and go from there. He hates the current environment of college football but can probably deal with it from the top of the mountain.

  18. 2
    3

It sucks that a lot of the schools in the B10 are down and the ucks just spent a fortune building their roster. All the other former pac schools r going to be easy games and Michigan will be down a lil too.

  19. Ladies at Utah 6pm Pac 12 network.

If they’re gonna get one on the mountain trip this is probably the game to be had. Colorado on the road might be a taller task.

    Neither will be easy

  20. Lol at these announcers after a double dribble call on Utah.

    “I didn’t see it. That’s too bad.”

    It was CLEAR as day

  21. 30-22 good gals at the half.
The last 2-3 minutes was all Beavs with a 7-0 run.
Utah has shot ZERO FT’s, Beavs 5 of 7 and, how ’bout Beers 3-3 at the line.

  22. Utah scores the last 7 to cut it to 11.

    49-38 Beavs after 3.

Beers looks like an ogre out there. Getting called for offensive fouls because she’s so much bigger and easily throwing Utah defenders around like a rag doll lol

    3 fouls all offensive

    • 3
      1

I’ve thought the same thing regarding Beers. You know Rueck has to have said something to the officials this season, but those BS calls continue game after game. Beavs up 12 with 2:30 left.

  23. Utes have only scored a single point in the first 6 minutes of the 4th.

Lead is 17 again. This one is over. Good gals gonna get it done in SLC

  24. Watching the women’s game yesterday showed why they are much improved over last year. The guard play from the freshman Donovan and Shuler is the difference. TVO can play off the ball a lot more now with less minutes. She’s become more efficient that way. The offense gets into their sets faster now and both guards have good enough handles to bring the ball up court under pressure. Guards playing better lets Beers get more one on ones. It’s a nice spiral upward.

Oddly enough, the team turnovers per game are the same as LY. Looking at the top teams in the land, they all average between 12 to 15 per game.

    • Not certain, but I believe Rueck has said that 15 TO’s is acceptable, for sure he has said that the goal is to keep opponents shooting under 30%

Recently I’ve noticed that points off of TO’s have been less for the opponent than sometimes in the past.
Example, last night OSU had 12 TO’s leading to only 3 pts for Utah. OTOH Utah had 10 that led to 14 pts for Beavs.
Getting back on D along with ??

      • There’s only one team in WBB that averages under 10 TOs per game and just 8 total under 12. (men’s has 173 under 12 for perspective).

So TO’s per game are high vs the mens game but not way out of line with the women’s game.

  25. Brennan getting a second interview at UCLA? Things must be really rough at UA.

Fleck turns down UCLA. Kelly bolts. Not a great time for them.

  26. So much for playing better at home. Huskies have doubled the woeful Beavs 34-17 with about two minutes left in the first half. Can Tinks do the honorable thing and “Gary Andersen it” out of Corvallis?

  27. Well, if he didn’t have 3 years on his contract, Tinkle would no doubt be gone by now. Getting swept at home to go to 3-10 in conference in year 10? I honestly think they should bite the bullet and can his ass at the end of this year. The product is being damaged and that is a problem.

    • Ya his contract has been killing us and there’s no reason for optimism and hope until he’s gone. Too bad Nvidia guy won’t just buy him out. It’s like nothing to him.

    • Yeah, agree. I was thinking how long Tinks has been HC. He has to be one of the longest tenured MBB coach we’ve had. Primarily do to his long term contract that should have never been extended.

  28. Thankfully baseball season is ready to start. Hopefully the boys can stay healthy and make a deep run this year. Looking down the road, do they lose quite a bit off this current squad where making a deep run next year will be pretty tough?

  29. Thanks Bill! What position will he play at the next level (hopefully for the Beavs)? There recruiting has been very good with at least a couple potential starters as freshman.

    • Off to a good start, Good Gals are up 17-8 at the end of one. Buffs are overplaying Hansford and she’s scored her first two 2-point baskets of the year on backdoor cuts. The play so much smarter than the Men’s team.

    • I have no idea what’s considered a foul during this game. Beavs getting mauled time after time. 80% of those “jump balls” were blatant foul on Colorado.

      • Sadly, some media pundits are noting this is how you can tell WBB has arrived, whether its physical play with WWF referees or broadcasters like Swoopes criticizing Clark using false information….I remember the Ducks WBB being asked about their physical play at the lack of calls, and the response was “Whatever. I just want to play basketball.”

Good on the women for persevering today. Its not surprising CU would make a desperate run on their home court, it’s disgusting that one can’t even tell what a foul is anymore…

  30. 65-59 final

    Statement win by the ladies!

Led by as many as 25 against the number 4 ranked team on the road and a road sweep of the mountain schools who are both ranked.

    • And CU was allowed to turn it into a wrestling match by the refs. That CU player who started screaming at the referee with 6 seconds left should’ve been T’d up.

Despite all that it’s still a huge road win.

          • I thought Colorado was going to the big 12 and I was thinking basketball switched over…guess I should have checked conference standings!

          • They are. Not until next season.

Good gals are a game out of first place. One game behind Stanford and 1/2 game behind Colorado.

Stanford has a pretty easy remaining schedule. Only ranked opponent? The good gals at Gill in a few weeks.

Buffs next 3 are at Utah, UCLA and USC.

Pair of huge games against the LA schools at Gill next weekend. Win those and set up a showdown with Stanford for 1st place.

          • Actually, Colorado’s wbb thug identity last season and beginning of this one had officials seeming to think it was quite cute. There might have been some behind the scenes discussions because they get away with significantly fewer crap plays now.

Pretty cool thing is they’re having the team captains from the local high school lahainaluna football team here on Maui at the Super Bowl and they’re doing the coin toss!

This Super Bowl is lesser of two evils for me. I hat the forty whiners and am sick of the chiefs and always seeing and hearing about swift and his brother. All in all I’m pulling for the chiefs.

      There are no republicans.
There’s a bunch of morons who follow the biggest moron of them all in the Trump Party. He’s so abjectly stupid and fearful, he makes Joe Biden look sane and highly competent. He’s also about as un-American as they come.

But apparently people believe this blood-poisoning propaganda he spews… which keeps food production low and prices high, because when they poison our blood, they also pick our crops and process our foods.

So friggin’ stupid. Amazingly stupid. Stupid is about all there is to it.

      • 2
        3

lol… and apparently on top of everything else, the orange monkey’s ass is a fucking tankie.

Maybe stupid isn’t a comprehensive enough word, any more.

        • 6
          3

Rubber and glue is the height of your argument?

Those are some sad anti-American monkey ass noises.

Donald J Trump is an abjectly stupid human who babbles incessantly about things like “they’re going to poison our blood” or something about Nicki Haley having all the power in Congress.

Meanwhile, the very people who can’t find labor on their farms, due to his direct actions, are still voting for him and his wanker fascist propaganda, because why?

It’s not like this country hasn’t survived Know Nothings in the past.

      • “He’s as unamerican as they come” and “he’s so abjectly stupid and fearful” but being stupid and fearful is the cornerstone of being an American.

        • To be fair, fearful nativism has historically proven to be a useful political tool for despots and tyrants for eons.

Didn’t everyone read Machiavelli in HS?

  32. Mahomes didn’t have a great game but he got it done when he needed to. The guys unbelievable! I think he played under the Pirate at Texas Tech.

    • 34-46 for 333 yards and 2 TDs is stellar, considering his offensive line got blown up all game. Carried the ball 9 times for 66 yards too.

Really it shows how great Andy Reid is as a play caller.

      • He had several key mistakes, but got it done when it mattered. First half was really rough, then he threw a pick on the opening drive of the second half. Turned it on after that.

Agree with the Reid comment. Not much of what he did was Mahomes making great plays. They just did a good job taking advantage of his skill set. Looked like a Bo Nix performance.

  33. I know it is corny, but i think the Bray 44 t shirts or jerseys ought to have “Loyal” or “Loyalty” where his name goes, could do the same for Martinez jersey, and others who have chosen to stay with OSU at a challenging time.

While I appreciate what Bray is doing, I don’t really want a “Bray All Day” t-shirt …

  34. Baseball season is here and I’m going to guess at the lineup. It’ll be a tough lineup for opposing starters to get through as they are talented and experienced. Mistakes will be punished. DH is a bit of a mystery but three solid candidates. Depth behind the starters is unknown. Other than Caraway, rest of the freshman will be competing for scraps of playing time.

    1. McDowell – CF
    2. Bazzanna – 2B
    3. Guerra – 1B
    4. Turley – LF
    5. Kasper – RF
    6. Hainline – SS
    7. Caraway 3B
    8. Peterson/Krieg/Trosky – DH
    9. Smith – C

Other than Caraway, the lineup is veterans. If they go cold, it won’t be for long and if they get hot, 10+ runs a game is likely. Few opposing pitchers will get 5+ innings against this lineup. Better than the 2018 lineup? It has potential

  35. If it wasn’t mentioned, good gals move up to no 11 in the top 25.

8-11 are all Pac 12. Colorado, UCLA, USC then OSU

Stanford moved back up to no 3.

  36. Ranked higher than UCONN for possibly the first time ever? Thursday is big as it’s the initial 16 reveal. Wonder how much the weak non con sos hurts them? Their NET ranking only went up by 1 to 17, even after the weekends road sweep. Being a 4 seed or higher is huge as they’ll be hosting the first two tournament games

Question: haven’t had a chance to watch the women’s team this year, how is there athleticism and foot speed? I had a chance to go to the elite 8 versus Louisville years ago and what stood out was Louisville was just so much more athletic than ORST. To steal an angry term, they out athlete’d us.

Having not watched, I’m assuming it much like prior years were ORST wants to control the tempo, keep it a slow grind it out kind of pace. Beside being on the road guessing the 3 losses to Cali school do to them have superior athletes.

      0

That’s a great point. My impression is that they are collectively more athletic (quick, coordinated, fast twitch) then any of the teams since I started following Beavs women’s basketball (Sydney Weise era).

The two freshman guards are a big part of that.

Another huge factor, is that we have at least 8 different players who immediately come to mind (not looking at the roster at the moment) who can all shoot the three and get hot at various times, so we’re not as reliant on just 2 or 3 players who need to be “on” as it has seemed in the past. We’ve pretty much always had good to great post play, and this year Beers is as good as any we’ve had.

Combine all that with the best on-the-ball defense I’ve seen from a Beavs team, and I’m super excited for where this team could go.

    • Beers is impressive for her size. She brings the ball up the court on occasion. Probably could shoot even more as she has a nice 12-15 footer. I would say one of the most athletic “big women” the team has had. Hunter is also a very athletic PG.

      • One thing about Beers that I’ve noticed; she seems to have a better ability to catch the pass than some bigs in the past. Hamlim, Gulich and, I think, others took a long time to stop losing passes out of bounds. Maybe partly due to those around her? Gotta be mainly her better hands though.

        • A couple of games ago, she took a simple pass at the high post, but the way she just plucked the ball out of the air caused me to take notice that she appeared to have very strong hands.

  38. https://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/2024/02/all-about-the-michigan-state-spartans-an-oregon-ducks-fan-guide-to-the-big-ten-conference.html

Broad overview with really little mention of Smith, the familiarity between Ducks and Smith, how Smith had one foot out the door to MSU at CW, how Ducks were playing MSU’s game on the Autzen screen as Beavers warmed up….or how they’ll be in Autzen next fall. Maybe this will be brought up pre game…

  39. “…four players from last season’s Beavers roster were invited to the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine.

Invited to the combine were receiver Anthony Gould, right tackle Taliese Fuaga, cornerback Ryan Cooper Jr. and safety Kitan Oladapo.”

  40. https://sports.yahoo.com/with-college-sports-at-key-juncture-what-does-the-future-of-the-ncaa-tournament-and-cfp-look-like-164559682.html

Huge article here about the future of college sports. It’s obvious why SB’s priority is to get into a power conference: the balance is continuing to shift toward winners of big events and giving big conferences more access to the big events. NCAA tourney is likely to add more at-large sports because the big conferences want more teams in. CFP is likely to expand because the big conferences want more teams in.

Funny thing is all of this will be necessary if player compensation comes anywhere close to mandatory, otherwise the small schools will get pushed out and non-revenue sports will disappear. So TPTB will claim it was all inevitable because the greedy players wanted money (and not because they just wanted to grow their own “businesses.”)

  41. Big news day for CFB business…

Schulz expected to vote in favor of a 5+7 playoff because it gives P2 a better chance of making the CFP. He’s also asking for P2 to get CFB payouts equal to the lowest pro-rata (not actual) P4 payout, basically making them de facto power conference teams.

  42. Does anyone know the record for most Beavs invited to the combine? I saw on twitter they tied their best of 7. I feel like one year they had nine but that could just be guys that got signed I can’t really remember.

  43. Watched the most recent Beavers Edge interview with Trent Caraway and Mitch. First thing, Caraway looks like a 3rd year guy already. Definitely has the build, which hasn’t always been the case with our recruits. Always got guys with lots of talent but often they had some growth to go through physically and he looks like a guy that’s ready. Mentioned he got a call on day 2 for early 3rd round of draft but was an easy decision to say no. He wants to be a day 1 guy and if he didn’t get the day 1 call he wasn’t interested.

May will be day 1 and and Kmatz day 2. Still deciding on 3rd starter. Said he was confident in any of the top 3 or 4 to be the Friday person, which is in-line with how my initial impressions were as well. May seemed to be the guy with the “best” stuff…just needs to work on control but Kmatz or Hunter could easily have been that top spot as well.

  44. 1
    1

Was just reading a Daschel report that baseball lost a potential starting pitcher for the season (Aiden Jimenez), who was injured in practice and is now facing Tommy John surgery

    • 34 ypc average on 17 receptions (2 per game). Listed as a QB on the team’s website, so he may still be finding a position. Also listed as a QB coming out of HS. Played in the toughest JC league in TX. Offers from USF and ODU. Looks like a development prospect, but TE is probably the best position for those kinds of guys.

  45. From Sports Illustrated:

From Duke Ratanakarn (@sanddune80): Top three players who are rising after the Senior Bowl?

My three, based on conversations I had with scouts after the game: Toledo CB Quinyon Mitchell, Oregon State OT Taliese Fuaga, and Michigan WR Roman Wilson. The first two are probably top-half-of-the-first-round players now, while Wilson may have played his way into the second round.

    • Kindof cool that a school like Toledo was able to hang onto a first rounder and not lose him to the portal after his first few years there.
He played for them 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and contributed all 4 years. Surprised no other school was able to lure him away.

      • Becoming a unique story. It might help his draft stock a tiny bit character wise. He might not be a constant holdout and demanding trades and what not.

    • He probably would’ve been a weekday guy but likely top reliever option. I think it’s safe to say that May, Kmatz, Hunter are the top 3. I would’ve put Jimenez in the 4th spot but I’m sure the coaches will have Lattery there and possibly even Lawson as the 5th. Those 2 mostly due to their experience I’d assume. I think Jimenez has much better stuff and if he kept pitching this season like he did towards end of last year and in the summer league, he probably should’ve pushed for even the 3rd spot. Safe to say this is a pretty big blow even if he wasn’t starting out as a top 3 guy.

  46. Georgia State HC resigns to coach TE at South Carolina. Says NIL and player retention are only going to get worse in the coming years.

More and more guys don’t want to be HC in college. Can the dinosaurs in charge figure out how to fix this?

    • 7
      1

It can be fixed by turning athletes into employees and defining a standard wage and bonus structure. Then money is no longer a factor in where you play. It’s only about playing time, experience, education, and culture.

      • I don’t know how universities would handle injuries incurred by athletes who happen to be employees… esp. when a significant percentage won’t be residents in the state they are in. :3

      • I don’t think any amount of salary structure or standardization can change anything.
As long as NIL exists, the schools with the boosters who are willing to pay NIL contracts are always going to be able to attract the majority of the talent. Whether the players have zero salary or if every player in America were given a flat $100K annual salary. That NIL money is the real bonus and there’s no way to control it now that it exists.
I think BG is right, the tax implications are going to be interesting if they do start paying players.
Pro players have accountants to sort out their state income taxes for the games they play on the road. Do the college athletes have the resources necessary to keep on top of all of that? Because if not, they could be in for a rude awakening if they ever get audited.

        • Think I recall reading that the *ucks now include tax filing assistance as apart of their athletic offers. Unfortunately was the first university to offer it and then others followed suit

          • It’s impossible to regulate because you can’t stop an individual from making a living. And you can’t eliminate it because it’s a business.

          • And it exists because the US Supreme court ruled in 2021 the NCAA can’t deny players the chance to earn money outside of college. There’s no going back

          • But is there is a way to create a law where players have to earn the money instead of saying come here and we will give you x amount of dollars without really any strings attached and you can leave anytime you want? Maybe that fine print already exists and we have yet to start hearing about the breach of contracts in NIL deals.

Also the fact that some of these collectives are being ran as non profits when they really aren’t so there’s going to be some backlash at some point. If donors start getting hit with taxes you can guarantee the players receiving the money will feel some of the pain.

        • I don’t understand the comments about the tax implications? There’s no way these kids’ NIL income isn’t already taxed/taxable. Maybe I’m missing people’s point.

    • I’ll bet they have it all figured out before September. The amount of money at stake for the playoff spots is too much for them to sit back and share it with less than deserving schools. My guess is the ACC will be blown up by June. SEC/Big10 have already negotiated the landing spots for the desirable programs. Brett Yornak responds by bringing any and all schools available into a nationwide conference as a challenge to the ESPN overlords.
Congress, lawyers, anti-trust lawsuits, and dramatic realignment follows.
SEC/Big10 jettison several bottom feeder schools to make room for a couple of bigger brands, (Vandy, Northwestern, Indiana, Miss St,) and pick up Notre Dame into their mix for a 30 school super-conference.

Schultz should hold his vote and understand where it is all going. He has leverage to undermine the whole process. Perhaps the PAC2 will have teams returning to the west with more of a reality check before they can even begin their new conferences.

  47. Didn’t realize how good the MWC is in college hoops. ESPN is projecting 6 teams making the Tourney. And includes Jerrod Lucas and the Nevada Wolfpack. The 6 teams for third most for any conference and is tied with the Big Ten. Good thing they decided to play in the WCC the next couple of years as opposed to the MWC in hoops.

  48. 1st pitch today Angry Beavs! Ready for those $15 beers! Lol. Should be in the low 70’s and sunny here today. I’d expect to see a few dingers too!

  49. Caraway. Wow. Double and a HR in 2 at bats. Guy is legit. No way he’ll stay in the 9 spot. Guerra doesn’t seem super great defensively at 1st but perhaps it’s first game jitters. Was kind of the case last year. So talented offensively but not a great defensive guy at 3rd or outfield.

  50. Rumors of power throughout the lineup are true

6 home runs through 6 innings.

Hopefully some backups get some garbage time today. It’ll be valuable for them

  51. Caraway had a bad error that ended up keeping the inning alive and they scored 3 or 4 runs. It was a good time to make an error tho with the game well in hand. Hopefully get those freshman jitters out. He didn’t have any while batting tho!

    • He had made a pretty slick play earlier in the game. He’ll be fine. He did primarily play SS in HS so there’s probably a little learning curve there. I think the biggest concern will really be 1st base. If Guerra doesn’t clean it up a bit, he could find himself losing that to Kreig and splitting time at DH. His bat was so good last year but he’s just not that great defensively.

      • Attended in person. Really good crowd for OSU and the venue is top-notch. All Beav fans should attend at least once.

There were some jitters early but the team was focused and made some really nice defensive plays. Good day for bullpen guys to get the nerves out. Beavs starter was great. Didn’t see any of the freshman arms yet.

The offense is impressive and will score runs in bunches. New Mexico dodged some disaster by only giving up solo shots and the Beavs still scored 15. (Smith had a 3 run dinger but you get the idea.)
Jensen, Bazanna, Carrawy, Turley all impressive. Krieg hit a 425 bomb in his at bat.

Beavs will be in the hunt all year for a super-regional host if they get any pitching at all. I imagine they will average about 7 or 8 runs per game. Just get some good to above average pitching and they are looking at Omaha. This is Mitch’s best shot with the deepest roster of legit talent, the arms are the mystery right now.

        Go Beavs and great game.

        • Yep, well put! Live in AZ so it’s nice to go to this tournament. Sucks it’s down to 4 games now instead. Next weekend will be ridiculous in TX. Great line-up

  52. Hulk smash! Beavs bash their way to an opening day win.

Hitting thrives in the warm weather which makes me wonder how it will play in the cold and vs better pitching.

Pitching and defense were an issue today. One error leading to 4 unearned runs. 6 walks and a HBP is not good for the pitchers. That’ll get punished real bad in conference play.

May was ok. Could have been more efficient. We’ll see what he really has next week. Slated to start vs Arkansas.

    • Barring a season long slump by this roster, offense won’t be the issue. Their success seems to hinge in Dorman (God help us) getting these starters to give 5-6 innings of quality starts and the relief to limit their damage to a couple runs. Can’t really judge pitching on 1 game but Lattery seems to be the same he’s been his entire career. Not sure why RD is so high on him. Still a lot of arms to see this weekend. We’ll see who steps up!

    • It’s early, but agree those issues need to gey cleaned up quickly. If these are still an issue in April/May I’d be worried.

  53. Possible tough development for WBB. Beers took a hard elbow to the face defending a layup. She was sort of convulsing under the basket in obvious pain. Eventually got up, but was staggering as she went to the locker room with the team doctor. Not sure if it was the nose, face, or mouth. Hopefully, she will be ok. Beavs up 21-18 against UCLA in the 2nd quarter.

      • Yeah. Might be too tall of a task. I missed the injury to Beers.

Sucks. Cause with her this team can play with anyone imo

        7 point deficit now

    • It was called a flagrant, but it was hard to tell if it was intentional. It was on a drive to the basket and I think Beers was also called for a foul. The 2nd quarter was very oddly officiated is the only way I could describe it.

    • I’m honestly not sure why the shooter had to tomahawk the defender’s nose on that play.

It looks like it’s not a normal basketball play.

      • You can see the elbow go from higher just before contact, doesn’t mean it was intentional, but still… why? Definitely didn’t look like a normal movement to lead with a high elbow straight out in front of her. I thought for sure the game was over then as they often stuggle when she sits againstgood teams, also thought it was over when down 7 late, and when down 1 with a second left… glad to wrong so many times. Most exciting game I’ve watched all year.

  54. Watched the game in bits and pieces this morning. Unless the seemingly bewildered officials were going to hone in on Beers, I don’t think the game would have been particularly close. I think Raegan could have stymied Betts. I also checked the Colorado Thuggalos game against Utah. Good for the Utes.

    • Looked like UCLA was trying to do the “thug approach”, but to give the refs some credit, those “jump ball” calls against Colorado were rightly being called fouls on the Bruins for the most part. The Beavs a small advantage from the foul line and 22 fouls in total called on UCLA.

  55. Daschel got it right when he said, “The largest women’s basketball crowd at Gill Coliseum this season ought to pay a little extra for their tickets on the way out of the building after what they saw Friday night.”

    Any update on Beers?

  56. Beavers baseball offensively are gonna be the best offense in program history by a ton. The offense has insane depth. They have 7 guys who could hit double digit home runs and 4-5 who could hit 15 even with the cold weather they’ll see in Corvallis early in the year. Under Mitch, they have never had a SS even remotely close to Hainline. It’s gonna be a nightmare for opposing pitchers trying to navigate this offense.

On the pitching side, the starting rotation is gonna be improved. Aiden May has a lot of talent and had a solid debut but hopefully can get more swings and misses moving. Karen Hunter was their best starter until he got hurt in 2023. He was finally putting it together. He could end up being the #1 if he builds off last season. Kmatz is the weak link in the staff. He’s just okay. Allows too much hard contact to ever really be more than just an okay #3. Ideally, it would be nice to see one of the young guys step up and push him for that spot come postseason time.

Bullpen has some legit power arms. That has been a bit of an issue in previous years. They relied more on finesse arms but they’ve upgraded in arm talent. If they can get reliable arms in the pen, this team is gonna be in good shape for a Omaha run. Starting pitching will be solid but not great but the offense is gonna be elite of the elite. They don’t need great pitching, just need it to be solid.

    • I’d say the 2017 offense will be hard to beat. This team is legit but I’ll reserve judgement to see how they execute in the clutch. This team’s starting pitching is good not great. Bullpen is suspect with a lot to prove. I’m worried this team may not be a good as the hype but we’ll see.

  57. Kmatz seems rusty. Couple leade off doubles. Walks. Several well hit balls. Props to him for getting in some slight trouble in 1st and getting out of it. Tanner Smith gunned a guy out at 2nd that went too far towards 3rd and saved that runner from going to 3rd on the next at bat with a sack fly. His 2nd throw out of the tourney.

  58. 1
    4

It’s possible Dorman makes these guys worse pitchers. Kmatz was much better as a freshman, regressed last year, and might be lucky to get out of the 2nd inning. Several walks, bases juiced. Gets a fly out. His day might be done. Have to imagine he’s on a smaller pitch count coming back from injury but he’s had no control thru 2 innings. Pitch count has to be up there with 4 walks in 2 innings. Would’ve been a good spot for Jimenez to come in at the 3rd and work to 7th or so.

  59. Props to MN pitcher. He’s got this lineup confused. Swinging at pitches down and away. Some in the dirt. 1 hit for the Beavs and not much contact at all. Need to make this guy throw some pitches to get to bullpen. Tall lefty but doesn’t have much heat. FB around 89.

  60. Word from wannabeav is that Bazzana got his right hand stepped on on the “weird toss to first”. He kept looking at it and shaking it afterwards.
Creek, BG, what did ya see?

  61. Two games in and the RD hate begins? We had one of the best staffs in the country last year and they made huge strides from the previous year. It’s the second game of the season. Give it time.

    • 1
      1

In my defense, I’ve been anti-RD for years. Top staff is a bit of a stretch, particularly last season. What player has he helped develop? Someone like Kmatz has seemingly regressed. Much better his freshman year compared to last year. 1st outing of the year, hard to judge plus he’s off an injury but he didn’t look particularly great today. This staff issued 12 walks and luckily stranded 17 runners. Watching this game in person, Beavs were lucky to hold on to the win.

    • T-U-C-S-O-N Tucson is known for great cycling but you have to go the foothills around town. The city itself is a pain in the ass to navigate in a car so I can’t imagine being on a bike unless you’re on the outskirts.

      • I went to Catalina State Park today off one of the spurs. That’s an amazing ride. But “the loop” was disappointing. Oro Valley is nice cycling. Tucson is ranked #2 worst/deadliest city for cyclists on several lists so I’m not sure where you’re getting that it’s great.

      • The scouting report for opposing batters will be take until they find the strike zone. And Dorman will respond by leaving guys in until the bases are loaded before bringing in another arm.
We’ve seen Dorman’s approach for 3-4 years right? Strikeouts are paramount at the expense of walks, hit by pitch, and wild pitches. This staff has more guys who can throw upper 90s than we’ve ever seen. The obvious conclusion to expect is some type of saber metrics that values the possibility of another strikeout over the caution of a control pitcher who doesn’t walk anyone.
        Dorman=Lindgren/Langsdorf
Analytics, system and metrics trump all sensible game strategy.

  62. MBB playing like shit at home against the Quacks. Getting killed on the boards. Trailing 36-24. Is it 18 league games? 3-15? Can Barnes really retain Tinlke with those results?

  63. 6
    3

LOL Marial with a 3 for the win???……….nope and another loss, nice play drawn up by the Maestro of Gill Coliseum. Tinkle is so clutch in those situations. His guys show incredible heart to tie the game and he pulls out his “let’s trick them by having our 7′ 5″ center shoot a 3 for the win, because they won’t expect it.”
Lead Tinkle to the Corvallis airport and fire him on the tarmac already. No coach has had so many moral victories and used the same excuses yearly for his team’s losses.

  64. Beavs made a nice comeback but gave the Quacks three attempts on their last possession and N’Dante slammed it home with one second left for the 60-58 win. Interestingly, the Beavs made their rally with Ibekwe on the bench. Marial was shaky at times but played a lot better than Ibekwe.

  65. Just moved from Bend after 19 years to Catalina near Tucson two weeks ago. Flew up to get the second car and on drive back timed it nicely to grab a couple of innings yesterday in Surprise. Nice park, good OSU turnout…seemed like a home game! Couldn’t tell you anything about the game, but nice to have a $15 beer and watch baseball to break up hour 17 of a 19 hour drive…

  66. Beers not playing, Beavs struggling early. Down 8-3 bout 5 minutes in. P-12 announcers not making much of an issue about Beers being out which I thought was a little odd.

    • 2
      1

Thankful that I don’t have to listen to P12 announcers after this year for the women’s games. They provide little to no meaningful analysis.

  67. Probably not happening for WBB today. Down 44-32 start of the 4th. It’s too bad, they’ve completely stuffed Watkins, but the offense is discombobulated without Beers.

    • Too bad, first home loss this season.
Beavs hung in there, keeping Ju Ju to her second-lowest scoring total and worst field-goal percentage of the season.
Held SC to 31% shooting, usually enough to come out with a W; but not when you only shoot 33%.

TO’s ?……..not a factor, in fact the Good Gals got 11 pts off of TO’s while SC got only 1.

    • First game in awhile hunter has looked like a freshman. I’m not sure she attempted a shot. Didn’t put much pressure on SCs point guard and missed a key block out that led to a put back late in the game. Gardner with a great game.

  68. 1
    1

Baseball making an early season statement. These guys will hit the ball and it will tough to keep the entire lineup quiet for 9 innings.

If Turkey is now going to get in that groove, it amplifies how tough the rest of the lineup will be. Not very many east at bats for a pitchers to relax means a lot of pressure pitches every game. Beavs can begin to build the reputation early in the year so it brings pressure onto opposing pitchers leading into the game and adds to the pressure as the game goes on.

Should be a fun year. Some of the young arms look pretty good and Munster has a year to prove his draft value, motivation.

  69. Whelp had reservations about Hunter coming into today and looks like they were valid. Looks like he still lacks consistent control and is walking a bunch of hitters today. Bases loaded Top of 3rd 3-0 Beavs.

  70. Managed to escape the bases loaded and no outs with a timely double play which did score 1 Gopher. Bottom of the inning went in order for the Beavs. To the top of the 4th 3-1 beavs.

    • Was good to see him work around trouble. Will definitely need better control from Kmatz, Hunter and several in the bullpen next weekend. Defense needs to clean up a bit. Caraway had 2 errors this weekend but he also made a ridiculous barehand play on a bunt. He’s still learning to play 3rd after playing SS in HS so I assume he’ll get better as the season goes on, however, Beavs had at least 5 errors in 4 games which is definitely not the level of defense we’ve been accustomed to over the last 20 years.

  71. TVO bringing character and fight:

“The Beavers trailed by 12 points near the end of the third quarter, and von Oelhoffen created a moment that foreshadowed just how hard the Beavers would scrap to get back in the game in the fourth.

“I was thinking going into it, just control what I can control,” von Oelhoffen said. “That’s defense, effort, leadership, communication.”

Watkins pulled up for a deep-range jumper and von Oelhoffen extended to deflect it. Watkins grabbed the ball and kicked to Kaitlyn Davis. Von Oelhoffen recovered and blocked her shot too. Von Oelhoffen ended up in a scramble for the ball, diving after it as time expired.”

    https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2024/02/bill-oram-from-the-spotlight-to-the-trenches-oregon-states-talia-von-oelhoffen-is-a-leader-in-both-victory-and-defeat.html

If she’s putting out that kind of defensive effort, she and the team should get a timely visit from Payton before the tournament is over…

  72. Crazy to think that Bazzana could give Adley a run for his money as best beaver baseball player of all time.
    I thought Adley was untouchable

    • Bazzana will have the better career as a Beav. Adley was well below average as a freshman hitter as he was more of a project than Travis. Bazzana as a freshman had an OPS almost 280 points higher than him. It will be hard to match Adley’s junior season offensive numbers but Bazzana will be close and has enormous impact on the base paths as well. If Bazzana has the year he’s capable of, he’ll be the best Beavers player in history

    • 2
      1

I’m not sure what to think about this hire. It seems logical that we’d want someone that’s been here with familiarity of the situation and whatnot, but, at the same time, she’s also been a part of both Scott and GK teams and they were clearly incompetent.

      • As far as the job she oversaw was concerned, she basically ran operations and compliance on the sports side. If anything other than refereeing has been a problem on that side, I’m not aware of it.
She still doesn’t have the same chops Navarez has. But she’ll get a chance to prove her mettle.

        • The plan is clearly for this conference to
not exist in a few years. She was probably the best they could do and that’s a scenario where you want someone with familiarity, not a fresh new thinker.

          • Why wouldn’t the conference exist?

That sounds like a lousy use of the resources available.

That’s like winning the lottery then blowing your wad. Invest in the future.

            But familiarity doesn’t hurt.

          • I’d think that the Pac12 is a better brand than the Mountain West even if made up of mostly the same members. Even if there’s other P5 members that end up back in the P12, Stanford, Cal I imagine it’ll be hard to stay as a Power school. With all the shakeup happening, it’s gonna be then Power 2. Seems most likely that MWC disolves into P12 and maybe some of those lower tier schools maybe end up somewhere else. Seems highly unlikely that P12 would be completely gone and fold into MWC.

        • I think it is good to have an Athletic Administrator with lots of college sports experience and not a pro tennis egomaniac or a casino guy. Maybe if we had this skill set with a media rights specialist under them, there would still be a Pac 12.

  73. Geezus. NBA all-star “game” final was 211-186? Apparently the commissioner handed over the trophy to the winners and said: “well, congratulations. I guess.”

So when are we going to get some transparency on how exactly the DamNation fund is being spent? Over a million dollars of Beaver Nation’s personal funds put into it, and we still have no idea how it is being spent, not to mention the additional anonymous 1 million dollar private donation. At this point it wouldn’t surprise me if Martinez alone accounts for half of the spending, but I feel the fan base is entitled to itemized spending reports.

  75. A late report from wannabeav, not sure if these items were mentioned by Worden:
-Talavs threw the fastest ball of the week at 94
-Both Talavs and AJ Hutcheson looked sharp

Anyone notice that Casey’s old buddy Mark Buchanan was behind the plate today? Both BG and wanna missed it………too many spotted cows??

I am starting to get conspiratorial. Interested to see a recap from USA Today on the week of college baseball that came across my phone. Guess how many mentions of the Beavs and their power barrage? Zero! Plenty of babble about LSU beating up on VMI.

        1

ESPN app only listed SEC scores throughout the weekend too. Beavs will need to obliterate the schedule an still may get another 2017 experience at Omaha because ESPN controls the whole thing through their rights and control who gets promoted as usual.

In the end it doesn’t matter. We’re already top ten. Just keep winning, and then they’ll have to talk about us at some point, ideally where it actually matters such as at Omaha. As much as it sucks to never get as much attention as we deserve sometimes, those other teams simply have much bigger dedicated fanbases than OSU that drive clicks. Check out the main LSU forum, tiger droppings. That site has nearly constant activity (like one or more every 2 minutes or less) posts and comments being made all year round.

Did you just ask people to go check out one the most notoriously toxic sports forums on the interwebs?

I’d rather have a discussion with Softy and Clownzano.

    • I have a number of tin foil hats. Would you like one?
I think a big part of it is lazy journalism particularly when there is already a narative out there ie…. Nobody is better than the SEC. Another smaller part could be lack of funds, but it does not take a lot of time or money to search the internet for scores and stats.

    • The national college baseball writers poll moved the Beavs up from #8 to #4 so somebody is paying attention.

If Aaron fitt had his way the top 25 would be all the SEC schools plus all schools with the word Carolina in them. I noticed that D1 Baseball now has half their site separately devoted to the SEC. Maybe there are more SEC folks subscribing to that paywall fortress.

Weird that people are downvoting wanting some accountability about where 2 million dollars of crowdfunded money is going. In any other context, it would be pretty much expected that the money is kept track of. DamNation was seemingly absent during the transfer portal disaster, and I’m sorry, I don’t think we should be throwing money at FBS unproven JUCO or FCS transfers

At this point, the most practical use of it would be to throw a few hundred thousand Dame’s way, and then put the rest towards trying to make affording Tinkle’s buyout a little bit more affordable for the school. (Only half joking).

Can someone also explain how it got to this point where college coaches coaching amateurs at even the most irrelevant schools have so much contract leverage? Not many jobs out there where you get paid millions for being fired for being atrocious at said job, and then likely get another high salary job offer shortly after.

“Not many jobs out there where you get paid millions for being fired for being atrocious at said job, and then likely get another high salary job offer shortly after.”

There are a lot of high paying jobs like this. Usually it’s just that people aren’t explicitly fired, they’re told to resign.

Yup…”separations-of-employment” where a settlement is involved because its deemed cheaper than potential litigation.

In the kong term, I’m not sure its more cost effective because standards are effectively lowered and performance folliws.

I miss the days when a manager could fire someone fir nit doing their job and not achieving progress and results.

Dude, get over it. I don’t need to see an itemized sheet of their expenditures. The “transfer portal disaster” is because 2 mil is nothing compared to the NIL funds of bigger schools. It’s simply not enough to keep everybody happy.

That’s incredibly optimistic with a new HC, new OC, new QB (probably) and WRs, new DC inheriting the worst tackling team in the country, and an OLine down some serious talent.

I hope Bray’s mantra on “physicality” doesn’t become a bunch of shoulder hits for impact instead of wrapping and form tackling. Tackling really dropped off last year.

Reasons for optimism- Martinez/Griffen/Newell, a fleet of taller WRs, more heft on the DLine…Reser home field advantage, lighter schedule with 8 home games…toughest foes (Ducks, Purdue, WSU) all at home.

Mhver3 on twitter says VAtech and NC State are inquiring about joining the Big 12. Anticipating an ACC breakup.

I think our best hand is to watch the ACC eat itself. Invite Stanford and Cal back to the PAC. Then invite Boise SDSU UNLV and Colorado State for 2026.

What’s the cost to take 4 schools from the mtn west, like $80 mil?

  79. CFP unanimously approves 5+7 format. That means Schulz voted ‘yes.’ Hopefully that also means he is getting good vibes on the P2 payout level.

    • Top 5 highest ranked conference winners are guaranteed a spot.
If ACC is imploded by this August and no one remains to fight like PAC2 did, PAC2 winner is all but guaranteed a spot.
The catch is whether the CFP agrees with NCAA as to whether PAC2 is still a “conference” for the 2 year grace period stipulated by NCAA rules.

      • As per the ESPN article: “Neither school (WSU/OSU) can qualify for an automatic bid as a conference champion in each of the next two seasons, so Schulz conceded the seven at-large bids would be more beneficial to them than the original proposal of six conference champions and six at-large teams.”

    • In return for your vote, we assure you that you are no longer going to be fitted for our concrete shoes, and I exchange for your continued silence, we won’t threaten you behind closed doors anymore.

  80. Not that it really matters, but conference champs are guaranteed seeds 1-4. So an independent or P2 member cannot be one of the top 4 seeds under any circumstance.

    • It won’t be long until SEC and Big10 convince themselves that the top 12 teams consist of only teams from their conferences. The assurance of conference champs means they can only expect to get 8/12 teams each year between them.
      1) SEC Champ- Georgia
      2) BIG10 champ-Ohio St
      3) ACC Champ- Clemson
      4) Big 12 champs- Utah
      5) MWC champ- Boise St
      At large bids:
      6) Independent- Notre Dame
      7) SEC #2
      8) Big10 #2
      9) SEC #3
      10) Big10 #3
      11) coin flip for SEC/Big10 #4
      12) Oregon St at 11-1 over any 3 loss SEC #4 or Big 10 #4?? So the Beavs realistically have a chance at 1 spot if ND is great and maybe 2 spots if ND loses 3 or 4 games.

Even after this new development, I think the fix is in and the tv ratings will still be the driving factor for even a 12 team playoff. I don’t see the Beavs getting the chance to be in it unless they are destroying teams and make the argument become more than can be ignored. There is way too much revsionist history over the course of a 12 week season to overcome the built in propaganda and pro-SEC bias of ESPN. SEC looked horrible in non conference games early in the year but their soft schedules allow the entire conference to look really good after a couple of months to reignite the talk of Alabama as the best team in the country.

  81. Good news! The P2 will receive power conference CFP distributions ($5-6M) for the next two years.

So the clock is ticking. How different will college football be two years from now?

    • It’s probably even more screwed because the less established programs have less booster interest than less established football programs.

      • Not to mention the key baseball media people are enamored with SEC baseball stadiums and crowds. Baseball, football, WBB, all have been coopted by ESPN/SEC.
ESPN has an inherent conflict of interest as they own rights and benefit from SEC success over the long term and therefore promote them in the short term at the expense of other conferences and schools.
The beginning point was ESPN buying into conferences and owning TV rights rather than being an impartial broadcast/news channel.

  82. 1

After the Schultz vote to allow the 5+7 CFP model yesterday(meaning less conference champ auto bids and more “highest ranking team” spots, writers are making it sound like today will see several more changes to the college football model.

I’m fully expecting to see them expand the max number of teams a conference can send to the CFP.
then expect to see SEC and Big10 teams always voted as the top ranking teams in the country throughout the year, where quality losses will outweigh wins by an Oregon State or WSU.
Oregon State and WSU will continue to have little to no shot at making the playoffs.
But it does sound like Schultz traded his vote to at least get the Pac2 teams a cut of the overall CFP money pool each year.
So yay, we get paid to remain irrelevant. (by we, i mean our school, not us fans who will continually need to donate to collectives and the school if we want to pretend we’ll have a shot at a playoff spot some day)

    • 4
      1

Being paid to remain irrelevant is better than not being paid to be irrelevant.

Let’s be honest: this doesn’t really affect us that much. Winning is what matters at the end of the day. If OSU becomes a consistent winner, everything else will follow. If not, the best we can hope for is to hang on for a slim chance at playing for something meaningful at some point. That’s what we had before (because we weren’t consistently top 10) and it’s what we still have, for now.

The NIL free-for-all and terrible portal rules are what hurt us the most, by far.

I know a lot of people here are rooting for the SEC and Big 10 to just go away so they can have their regional competition utopia in some sort of PAC-10 Lite, but that will decimate interest in OSU football. Once we’re no longer playing at the highest level, our roster turnover every year will look like 2023 Idaho, where they have a good season and every player immediately leaves, probably for UW or Nike. Interest will drop to FCS levels when we’re just seen as a minor league feeder team. Money will follow.

One scenario that would be an exception is a BIG/SEC direct relationship to the NFL. That would kill any pretense of collegiate/amateur status around those programs and people would still see the remaining teams as “college football.”

      • 1
        1

at least in the past we had the hope that we’d someday make a rose bowl in our lifetimes. Now, bowl games are even more meaningless than ever before. there really is no prize for a good season in our setup, other than “new Pac12 conference champs” with an invite to the Idaho Potato Bowl or some shit like that

        • I was amazed this last season to discover how many football “bowl games” that are held; as a one off I started counting from a list that was in a sports article I was reading.

I stopped when I reached forty. There were still more. >.<

        • It’s called colonialism.

Grab control of all the resources, then pit a minority of the majority who should be obviously against your actions against each other.

          It usually ends well.

    • “…then expect to see SEC and Big10 teams always voted as the top ranking teams in the country throughout the year, where quality losses will outweigh wins by an Oregon State or WSU.”

Yup. “Alabama has 2 quality losses, so you GOTTA slot them somewhere between #3-5, and I guarantee you, no one wants to play them in Tuscaloosa this time of year!” Yadda yadda yadda….

Imagine if the NFL used “power rankings” to invite and slot teams for their playoffs. Then say a starting QB gets injured, so their team, even if undefeated, is not selected for the playoffs…

  83. BASEBALL
Beavs get an unearned run in the t2 to lead TT 1:0. TT ranked #21 by some.
Is it really “unearned” if your basepath antics result in a poorly executed pick off……hmm

  84. McDowell’s career turnaround has been so impressive. His first few seasons he was just completely lost at the plate. The perseverance to fight through that and become a consistent hitter the last few years is really admirable.

    • It’s also a reminder these are young people who often have growth potential and needs.

The truly unique ones may go straight to the pros, others need development time.

        • It would seem that he made it quite difficult for everybody all along. His only redeeming act could have been to publicly call for an all conference meeting with enough lead time for the PAC2 to sue and take them to court for the restraining order. He was either very foolish to think he could pull it off, or knew it would be best if OSU/WSU at least had a fighting chance to respond before it was too late. I lean towards the former and have a hard time believing he is some form of honorable knight in shining armor after the debacle we have just endured.

          • When a former employer is so magnanimous to someone (who clearly has been acting in his own interest) about simply leaving potential millions on the table, it’s pretty much a, “He could have wasted money and time trying what the others tried, but he knows what’s up. Have some HR-speak.”

  85. 1
    1

Supposedly the CFP discussed granting every conference champion a spot during their meeting today (power and otherwise), and adding two teams to make it a 14 team field.

    • 9
      1

Not sure why they keep landing on these uneven bracket sizes where some teams get a bye while others dont.
Well, i do know, because they know the path for the top SEC/Big10 teams will be easier while the other teams beat each other up.
14 teams is better than 12 at least. Would still rather see a nice even 16 and cut out the conference championship games alltogether.
Conferences should be small enough that each team plays head to head vs every other conference foe and a conference champion can be determine in the regular season.

  86. Beavs pitchers continue to not throw strikes. Can’t really say it’s too early in the season since the walks/hbp is now at 34 through 5 games. That’s consistency now. Beavs got lucky to get out of the jams they did vs Texas Tech and that they were deep into their bullpen too.

This is a rapidly spreading disease that is afflicting most of the staff. This is a major problem.

Did the batters just beat the confidence out of the pitchers in fall ball?

    • Dorman must figure that high 90s Wild fastball is always better than low 90s control fastball. He will play the percentages that over time players at this level cannot hit a high 90s fastball, or process that it is a ball/strike often enough to win the battles regularly.

It is a form of saber metrics at the college level where most guys getting at bats aren’t the LSU 2023 lineup. But when you face that type of lineup, you likely get beat by seasoned hitters.

I’d guess Dorman and Mitch are expecting the staff to settle down and throw strikes as the season moves forward. But even if they don’t see improvement out of the staff, the offense will be good enough to bail them out in half of the bad pitching games.

Beavs should sail through the regular season but the run to Omaha, facing better pitching and needing consistency from the staff will be the Achilles, unless the offense in postseason is locked in and special.

Limiting free passes doesn’t seem as prized as strikeouts for Dorman. Not ideal.

      • 1
        1

We are in last place in the Pac with walks. We have played the most innings but the next closest team is 9 walks away with 9 less innings. We’re 5th in k’s and that position is inflated as we have pitched the most innings. If you look at k’s per 9 innings, we’re 8th in the conf. We’re also 8th in hits given up. What is really encouraging is we have the lowest ERA at 2.0 and that’s even more impressive since we do have 9+ more innings under our belt than the rest of the Pac.

I’ve been on the fire Dorman train for nearly as long as he’s been with the Beavs but I will say that it is still early. I get that 5 games is a little bit larger sample size, but that’s still only the 2nd opportunity for a lot of these guys and for some, yesterday was the 1st action they’ve seen. However, walks have been an issue for RD squads the last few seasons…last season we were last or close to last the entire season in that category. The strike outs have also decreased last year, and so far this year. I believe it was Hjerpe’s last season where we set the strike out record (props to RD) but since then, k’s have been on a decline and the walks have as well. Interestingly, many on that squad were still recruits from the Casey/Yeskie era and the true RD recruits are the freshman/sophomore guys on the team now.

While there’s plenty of time to correct some of these numbers, recent history isn’t on our side for that to happen. We just have to recognize that this isn’t the Casey recipe of success. Strong defense, top pitching and doing the little things right to win games. This is the complete opposite. It’s hit the long ball, score runs and let’s just hang on for dear life that our pitching can be good enough to hang on. The major problem with that approach is I don’t think it’s the recipe for post-season success. Strong pitching will always be a premium over high offense. In a 3 game series, having a mini slump offensively is catastrophic. Over the regular season, not as impactful.

        • Agree. Baseball, I think, is the one sport where a high octane offense can be totally shut down – do to great pitching. I’m not a big fan of baseball anymore because it’s like you said above. Everything at bat is a homerun or strike out. Yawn. So boring. I’ve always preferred small ball, where you bunt runners over, hit and run and steal bases. Puts more pressure on the defense and can be effective to score against stout pitching.

          • There were times last year where small ball would’ve really helped. We had that 3 week period where the team BA was like .200 and yet we weren’t doing some of the small ball stuff to generate a spark. They actually did a little of it in Surprise, which was nice to see. However, with this lineup there really only appears to be 3 guys that even know how to bunt. Bazzana, McDowell and Hainline. So I doubt we will see a ton of that this year unless 1 of those 3 happen to be in the right spot at the right time. In years past, just about everyone in the lineup was a threat to bunt and execute on it. Just another one of the shifts in philosophy. I know I say it a lot, but the MC teams are really a direct opposite of what Casey built. We’ll see if the MC model can do the trick for post-season success. It definitely can be successful during the season, but will it be effective for post-season runs is the question.

  87. I’ve always thought WHIP is a more helpful pitching stat. Good measure of how many negative outcomes your pitching staff is generating. We’re 9th out of 11 in the conference in WHIP right now.

  88. The stats that have stuck out to me is the walks, low number of strikeouts to walks, and it seem like our batters are striking out a lot too. Idk what’s usual for college baseball but I think they’re close to 10 a game.

  89. 1

There were some numbers posted for the matchup between Arkansas and the Beavs lead in everything but walks. Granted they’ve had one more game but the walk differential is the Beavs 30 to 13 for Arkansas. Giving up free bases is going to bite this team in the ass against better teams if they don’t clean it up!

  90. 11

MBB blows an 11-point lead second-half lead and loses to Cal. Road woes continue. Is it 1-40 away from home over the last three years? Barnes has to eat Tinkle’s contract.

      • Tinkle is the antithesis of what OU needs to be presenting in athletics right now. He is an anchor on the program when it cannot have any anchors. Each program must have at least parity with competitors but he is a bottom feeder.
Now BeaversEdge is saying the locker-room is beginning to resemble the dysfunctional lockerroom the year after the elite 8 run. So Tinkle will have a bunch of young guys frustrated, old guys moving on and any starters likely transferring out exactly like we have seen before. His built in excuse continues and OSU suffers a degrading downward spiral of a once great and proud basketball legacy.

        • This plays right into Tinkle’s strategy and what so many people seem to gobble up. Every year he turns the roster over so he can play the “new players, young players, need time to gel” excuse and many people fall for it hook, lime and sinker every year. We’re not even competitive in our losses. We’ve lost by an avg of 16pts a game this year! 16 fucking points! That’s not competitive, that’s an asskicking. I don’t know what progress has been made this year. Same win total, keep in mind that required us to win like 4 games in OT vs Div 3 opponents, offense isn’t any better. Handfuls of 20+ point losses. 3 road wins in 3 years and 20ish for his entire tenure at OSU. It’s a travesty.

  91. Beavers would probably be a tournament team if games ended at the half. Don’t know how many halftime leads they’ve blown, but I wouldn’t be surprised if its in double digits this year.

love’d the basket interference waived off, clearly a foul, that refs don’t call. Also no call while KC gets a bloody nose from an elbow. WTF

  94. Arkansas ace Hagen Smith started their opener last Friday vs James Madison where he walked the lead off batter, hit the second batter, and gave up a 3-run bomb to the third batter. He lasted one inning and 42 pitches. He’s starting tonight, at least he’ll be fresh.

  95. The Tinkle Irony- he has taken the program to some of its best finishes and its worst finishes in his tenure. He is a Jekyl/Hyde conundrum. Is Barnes just hoping for another year of the lightning in a bottle success? I don’t understand how Tinkle can be excused for sinking the men’s basketball program. We are witnessing a debacle with no way out of it for 4 years. He can’t recruit kids now with a 4 year extension as security, how will he recruit kids when they know he isn’t getting anything beyond 2027!??! Is that even possible he has such an extension? A clear dereliction of duty for Barnes to ever give such an extension to a mediocre coach like Tinkle. He isn’t a winner at this level and it has been proven beyond doubt. Leave already. Nobody wants to watch your product. Fans are voting with their time and money. Somehow the Tinkle era has destroyed the fan interest in mens bball.

    • “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom(nope), it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”

And is taking much longer to finish than a Dickens novel….

  96. This is going on 6 years I have railed on Tinkle needing to be fired. Craig Robinson was just as bad and his teams were just more athletic overall. Tinkle needs to move on. So sad for a proud fan base who witnessed the greats like GP to be subjected to Tinkle’s offense-less, micro-managed underclassmen and hodge podge lineups every year. OSU fans must have a greater basketball IQ than Tinkle but none of the big donors are demanding he go? Where are the voices demanding some action and knocking down Barnes door to get rid of this cancerous situation? More guys will transfer and we are back to another young group getting their lumps and watching 25 point losses at home with Tinkle calling timeouts after meaningless baskets to appear to be a strategist. So hokey and ridiculous.

    • Craig Robinson’s last year the Beavers won more games away from Gill than Tinkle has won the last 3 years combined. Craig sucked but Tinkle has produced some of the worst seasons in Oregon State history. He got them 2 NcAA tournaments but the 2015-16 team easily could have missed if not for a GW 3 and GW free throws by ST cause they got routinely smacked on the road. They have 8 wins on the road in the last 5 years. Insane ineptitude. The elite 8 run is gonna be one of the most inexplicable runs in recent sports history. Still have no idea how that happened

      • Craig just didn’t seem to know much beyond the Princeton. When he had Shaftanaar running the point center and a long rangy athlete backing up the 1-3-1 they did ok and caught a few teams by surprise. Then he said he wanted to get better athletes and play a more modern offense and man D but didn’t seem to know how to coach to that besides stomping and yelling “move”.

    • “College recruits and transfers can now negotiate and sign NIL contracts before enrolling at a university with no fear of breaking NCAA rules. Or, at least, they can until the case concludes, likely months from now.

But considering the NCAA already was under scrutiny involving antitrust laws, some NIL rules could be off the books permanently.”

    • The only thing that can save this sport is revenue sharing, across the entire league.
The more winning teams take in all the money, the less teams we’ll have as they keep killing the poorer programs off.
If a school has to decide how to spend their donor dollars more carefully, less will go to NIL and or less will go to facilities, because someone has to make up for the lost excess revenue. Might start leading to more fiscal responsibility.

  97. Arkansas ace, looking sharp. 3 k’s but he did overthrow on a bunt by McDowell. 2 were 3 pitch strike outs to Bazzana and Turley. Got Guerra swinging too

  98. 2 hits in 2 innings by the Beavs and struck out 6 times. Not really working the count either. Many if these are 0-3 strike outs. Gotta hope May can keep up

  99. Wow. 9 strike outs by the Beavs. Arkansas ace is dealing. This is a prime example of why pitching is still king in the post-season. Lots of game left but holy shit, this guy is mowing them down.

  100. May works out of a jam and it’s still scoreless going to the 4th. Man, this guy is killing with the slider. Gotta make him work. Only 36 pitches in 3 innings. He’s legit.

  101. Wow. Arkansas pitcher has 12 k’s. All their outs have been via strikeout. Unfortunate that its happening vs the Beavs. Really incredible

  102. Is it a “pitcher’s zone”? Or does he just have a lot of movement on that slider?
Maybe Mitch should send someone out to check for illegal substance on the guys hat/glove…just break the rhythm with a little mind game.

  103. Well, bases juiced. 1 down. Really unfortunate. Hopefully Keljo can escape but he thrown 4 straight balls. Would be poetic to walk home the 1st run. Walks will kill this team.

  104. Whelp, feels like game. 3 rbi double and bases are cleared. Considering we’ve struck out 15 times and dude only has like 63 pitches so far, not looking good.

  105. Where is the gamesmanship in the batters box? Why not back out and break up the pace? Why not try a drag bunt or square up to hunt just to show him something different?
Guys are too proud to show the reality that what they are doing is t working? So what you’re getting embarrassed by this guy!

  106. Dam, now an error and guy winds up at 2nd. Base knock and that run scores. Beavs have folded. 17 k’s will do that to you. What an awful outcome. Crowned in the 1st meaningful game with an absolute tank job by the offense, May is injured. Couldn’t get much worse unless someone else gets hurt.

    • Really surprising considering he hit well above .300 last season. But yeah, id like to see Trotsky get in the lineup for sure. He was a great spark as a freshman before the injury.

  107. Guerra! Ties it up with a 2 run bomb! Wow. Still can’t believe they took the starter out when they did. Has to be a pitch count thing early in season.

  108. Dam, Kasper limping still. Had a slight collision on the fly out he caught and doesn’t seem to have been able to shake it off. Seemed like he knocked shins with Bazzana. Hope it’s not anything serious but 2 key injuries this game for the Beavs

  109. Interesting mov3 with the last at bat. MC brings in true freshman who hasn’t played at all. Had 2 outs and runner at 3rd. Really an odd move.

      • You gotta at least bring in someone who’s played before. They have 0 intel on how that matchup goes with a guy who’s never even played. Sure it’s an early season game and doesn’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things, but goddamn, what an awful call to make.

  110. Beavers got a major problem at SS. Hainline has been an absolute disaster so far. Getting pinch hit for with the game on the line and with a guy that was completely overmatched shows how the coaching staff is feeling about Hainline.

Also pretty concerning how few adjustments seem to be made by hitters against upper tier pitchers. Saw it against LSU in the first matchup and tonight. So many fastballs right down the pipe taken for strikes. Coaching staff needs to get a few things figured out. Luckily, the Pac-12 behind Oregon State doesn’t look especially impressive, so they won’t face any teams in the conference who are as good as Arkansas, especially on the mound

    • I think the staff have faith that Hainline will turn it around. He batted over 300 last year in pac 12 play and is in a slump. But I think it was a good move because he was in that slump but the batter picked was very suspect.

  111. Well a lot of things we’ve been saying but us finally. Too many free bases. Our lineup did not looks at all like a top ncaa baseball lineup. The guy was obviously really good tho. Bazanna struck out 3 times from him and the guy looked like a golden spikes front runner. Nonetheless there shouldn’t be any other college team that you strike out a record setting 24 times or something like that.

      • Yeah. This guy was lights out and could possibly be the best we face until a post-season game. I think the offense will carry for this staff during the season but the relief guys have really got to step it up if they want to advance at all in post-season. I still say it’s early, but walks and hit batters have been a huge issue for RD staff the last 2 seasons so it doesn’t instill a ton of confidence that it is just going to be an early season thing. It is interesting how there doesn’t appear to be any change to plate aapproaches with 2 strikes. Dudes are still taking huge hacks like it’s a fresh count. Doesn’t look like they’re trying to protect up there to extend the count. Guess it’s just not how things are done anymore. We lucked out in not playing vs this pitcher a month or so from now. I can’t imagine he’d be pulled that early with that low of a pitch count in April. We had zero answers for him.

    • We’re going to find out a lot about this team tomorrow and Sunday.

Credit to the Beavs for clawing back in the game but seeing them get mowed down and make few adjustments was embarrassing.

  112. How have we struck out at SS since Grenier left? I remember thinking Armstrong was awful at the plate but compared to the last 2 years with Dernedde and now Hainline (at least so far), he’s looking like Tony Gwynn! Armstrong was a magician on defense but definitely a down grade from Grenier offensively but Holy shit, he’s head and shoulders above our last 2 guys. Hainline being 1-18 so far this season is worse than bad. If his slump continues and Trotsky still doesn’t get opportunities, it’ll be a crime. If MC doesn’t want to give Trotsky playing time, they could probably move Caraway to SS, which was his position in HS, Guerra goes back to 3rd, then Kreig could take over at 1st. Hainline has been ok defensively but I don’t think he’s been any better than what I remember Trotsky being as a true freshman. Can’t afford to have such a pivotal position be hampered by awful plate appearances.

    • I would think he bounces back. You don’t just go from being a good hitter to a bad one but agree that Mitch should look long and hard at replacing him if it continues or at least try it for a game and give him a rest and let him watch. Maybe light a fire under him.

      • Seems unlikely that it’ll last but man, he hasn’t even been close. Not like he’s ripping the ball and guys hav3 been making great plays or just hitting to where they’re at…hasn’t really had much good contact at all. Sucks for Trotsky. As a freshman he was a far better hitter than Dernedde and just as good, or better, defensively. No reason he should’ve been behind Dernedde. Now he sits behind Hainline. Maybe he’s not showing well in practice or something but damn, from what we got to see him do as a freshman before the injury last year, he shouldn’t be on the bench unless the guy in front is head and shoulders better. Have yet to see that from Hainline

    • They’ll beat UW on Sunday and Cal next weekend. But if they’re gonna beat Stanford? They need Reagan Beers

Might also need USC to drop a game. Idk all the tiebreakers but the good gals lost both games to USC

    • Lineup was just released. Trosky is in for Hainline, Krieg at DH and Macias in RF. Macias looks much improved from last year and Trosky in for Hainline is good to see. If Trosky can hit for a little pop with his plate discipline, he could really push Hainline for that SS spot. I think last year if Kasper was to miss time, it would really hurt a lot but there’s a little more depth and Macias looks more ready for a significant role now than last year.

  113. Trosky with an rbi double. In 1 start he done more than Hainline has in 6 games. Want Hainline to succeed but MC needs to play the guys who are are producing. 2 years he held onto Dernedde despite plenty of better talent behind him.

  114. In my quest to get my money’s worth out of Sling TV, I do have the Beav/Stanford game on. First four minutes they had six turnovers and 3 points. Trail Tree 9-3.

    • 3
      1

Beavers on an 15-2 run. Look forward to seeing them go up 15 and then start the second half on a 9 minute scoring drought and lose by 10

  115. Hopefully Aiden May’s injury isn’t serious but it’s been notable how much better the pitching staff has looked this weekend. Aiden May looked like an ace last night and Kmatz is having one of the best starts of his career today with 9 strikeouts through 5. Best he’s looked in his career for me. Michigan has rarely generated much hard contact aside from the HR and line drive to left for an out. If this is the Kmatz they get for most of the season, that definitely raises the ceiling for this team. Just hope May is alright.

Offense has really responded well and Turley is an absolute superstar.

    • Yes, but they aren’t ahead by 10-11 points. Besides, it’s the Jordan Pope show. He can’t carry the team for another half. Barnes simply has to have a plan for taking out WT at season’s end. I hope someone has been filming Tinkle’s actions on the sideline. I’m convinced he is off the wall. As in last season, he grabs at the players, they don’t look at him. He is ruining any promise they might have had.

  116. Yup, 11-point lead is evaporating. Akanno misses a wide-open three that could have given them a 12-point lead. Ibekwe misses a point-blank tip-in and then fouls a guard on a drive to the basket who of course scores as Ibekwe doesn’t come close to at least blocking the shot. Stanford can cut the lead to five. Will there ever come a time when the Beavs add to a lead on the road? Everything is just so difficult for this team.

    • I stepped away, but Tinks is usually adept at calling momentum-killing time-outs or taking someone out of the game after they make a nice bucket.

  117. 3
    1

Blind squirrel nut…….MBB wins and yes they gave up an 11-point lead again, but Pope went off for 30 and Rataj had a career-high. 85-73.

    • 6
      2

So we will be told to call off the dogs who are yelling for Tinkle to get fired?
Tinkle accomplished the impossible again by getting a road win against a bottom half conference for on the road. He has such a bad trend that anything decent appears to be groundbreaking momentum upward.

Fire him tonight on the tarmac, in the locker room, off the team bus, outside of Tommy’s Bar and Grill, wherever but fire the guy. He is a cancer to the athletic department because he is killing the program. He may be a nice guy but he is a demonstrably horrible coach and definitely not a program builder.

Eat the $10mil and let him go now.

    • I guess Pope could carry the team. And Rataj with him. After the fight, I was waiting for the refs to call everything against the beavs but they called offsetting penalties. It seemed to give the guys a lift.

  118. 5
    2

You can tell the talent is there for this team and the coaching is abysmal. It’s unfortunate there’s going to be major roster turnover after this season for one reason or another.

    • 4
      1

Pope, Bilodeau and Rataj is a really good top 3 and it has taken abysmal coaching and role players to drag them down to a bottom of the conference team. Ibekwe and Christian Wright playing significant roles easily could be the difference between being 12-16 and being 16-12/17-11 and poor coaching as well. A better coach with this core could win big but we’re stuck with Tinks

  119. Hainline back in the lineup. Trosky on the bench. Hope Hainline can get it figured out but mam, Trosky has done more in the 1 start than Hainline has thru 6. True freshman Segura back on the mound. Kasper still sitting.

  120. 4
    7

WBB can’t get it done against a mediocre Washington squad just when USC and Stanford take recent losses. Beavs can’t have nice things!

    • 7
      1

      Of course we can.
This is the tired legs portion of the season. Beers getting a rest may be the difference in who she becomes in the post-season.
And maybe this will teach her to wear safety equipment, if she’s going to play at a level others get frustrated with her presence.

  121. 3

Good weekend for the baseball team. But could have been great. Nice to see a very solid bounce back after the Arkansas game.

    My observations,
Pitching is not going to be great this year but as long as they are a little above average, team can make a run.
Sat, Sun and weekday starters for opposing teams are going to have a lot of rough days.
Cold bats should go to the 9 hole and get protection from Bazzana.
Caraway has a hit in every game. Wonder what the longest freshman consecutive hit record is? Defense really needs to get cleaned up.
Turley is probably hitting the ball harder than he was last year but still has a hole in there that results in Ks. Might want to talk to Adley about how he retooled his swing bc if Turley reduces his K rate, he’s a top 5 pick.

Beavs are clearly a top 16 team but shaky as a top 8 as of right now.

The only real challenge the next two weeks is getting the weather to cooperate. Does not look like fun weather this week.

    • Ya caraway has done well on offense but he’s made quite a few errors already. Hopefully he can settle down a bit and get that cleaned up. Have the Beavs had a game without an error yet?

      • I don’t believe so. Definitely not the defensive team we’ve become accustomed to. I’m hoping Caraway gets it figured out as season goes on. It seems the move to 3rd is a bigger adjustment than he was expecting. Wonder if there’s any discussions about moving him back to SS. Perhaps Trosky or Hainline could move to 3rd…or even Guerra and then Kreig to 1st.

Overall, pitching was really good outside of the relievers vs Arkansas. Hit batters still an issue for everyone this tournament and the free bases were the catalyst for the scoring that did take place. Segura has some nasty stuff. I know it’s only 2 starts, but he looks like the best freshman pitcher we’ve had since Abel. Worked his way out of some jams which shows some great mental fortitude for a youngster. It does seem like they’re playing with fire on the free bases, and while they’ve been able to limit the runs from those situations, it seems unlikely that can continue over the season and definitely a concern for post-season play.

    • 9
      3

All this talk of Walks, HBP and Errors. Facts, the Beavers have played only 8 games. 6 have been against Power 5 teams. The Beavers opponents have walked more batters (38-37), the Beavers have hit two more batters (12-10) and the only players with more than 1 error are Guerra (2) and Caraway (4).

One is a freshman at the beginning of his college career and both are playing new positions.

Oh and for those who say starting pitching is our weakness, two starts each the weekend starters ERA, are 3.72, 1.08, and 2.70 with WHIPs of 1.14, 1.08 and 1.30. They have also combined for 32 K’s and 11 BB, a 3/1 ratio. Way early but I will take that all day thank you.

Save your snap judgements until the end of March after we have a little Pac 12 play. Too early to nit pick and search for your warts. This team has a strong chance to host a Super.

      • 3
        1

Ah yes. Don’t formulate or articulate any observations…especially not on a message board. The insanity! I don’t think anyone has questioned this teams’ ability to be great, host thru post-season and be a final 8 team. May, Kmatz and Segura have been very solid. Hunter, been ok but has the highest WHIP at 1.50 of the 4 primary guys. Bullpen is where more of the struggles have been, and yes, it’s early so there’s plenty of time to iron some of the control issues out. Lattery and Lawson, 2 of RD’s favorite guys to use, have WHIP of 1.91 and 2.0. To his credit, Lattery hasn’t given up an earned run yet but that’s the kind of fire we’re playing with in the early season that will come to bite you as the season progresses. If you look at walks at a team level, we’re like 8th or 9th in the Pac.

As for the errors, it’s definitely something to be keeping an eye on. We’ve got 11 thru 8 games and that’s last place in the Pac. We’ve had teams in recent history that went weeks between errors much less 11 in an 8 game span. All that said, it is early and being 7-1 after playing TT, OK St and Arkansas is really a testiment to how good this team is. The point I’m making, and some others, is that the few issues this team does show in the early season are issue that will limit how far a team can go in the post-season.

        • Bullpen struggles have been a little overblown. First 2 games of the season there were some struggles but aside from that, it’s mostly just been Chase Reynolds. Everyone else in the pen was nails against TTU/Michigan/Ok State and the Arkansas game wasn’t good but it also wasn’t terrible. Have to factor in the quality of the competition as well. Texas Tech’s offense is loaded and the bullpen beyond Reynolds largely shut them down. Last year’s pen was rough and had very few guys that could be relied on for even an inning let alone multiple innings. This year’s bullpen has significantly more talent and depth. If May isn’t seriously hurt, I think there should be quite a bit of optimism around the pitching on this team

          • While pitching only gave up 4 runs vs TT, they walked 8 batters. If the box score is accurate, we also plunked 6 batters. Pitchers had 7 k’s. Reynolds was definitely a part of that, but he’s not the only reliever that’s struggled. We’re 9th in the Pac with 40 walks plus however many HBP we’ve given up. We have played the most innings so that should be taken into consideration along with the competition level of 3 teams this weekend. Michigan isn’t a good team and projected middle of B1G. Team ERA is ridiculously low and one would expect that to definitely go up. A lot of these pitchers have done an admirable job in limiting the damage when faced with trouble. Obviously it’s early, but you can’t deny errors (most in the Pac and 9th in fielding percentage) and free bases aren’t an issue so far this season. Ask yourself when the last time the Beavs were 9th in fielding percentage in the Pac? I can assure you, the coaches are certainly emphasizing the errors and free bases so why would fans not discuss these things?

          • In the TTU game, they hit zero hitters and Lawson, Morrell and Ferguson went 6 IP and gave 2 free passes. That’s pretty good against a big time offense. Overall, they gotta get better and cleaning up free passes but they did a pretty solid job of it over the weekend with room to get better. Defense definitely could use some work. It feels like overall most of the guys have been good but Hainline and Caraway have had some issues. That is the biggest concern right now and a legitimate issue for sure.

          • Does it feel better to type out the words free passes, instead of walks?

I’m lazy and get tired reading three syllables in my head, let alone having to type out extra letters.

          • It bothers me less than seeing some serial crime drama and hearing, “Gee Ess Double You” for a gun shot wound.

Acronyms aren’t created to make more work for the speaker/writer/reader. This one at least is a slang term for base on balls, not walks.

I’ll be waiting for OC Beaver to let me know when it is appropriate to post snap judgments about OSU sports. Until then I’m signing off….
Perhaps I will make sure I have a rational and factually supported observation that is bolstered by reality before I post.
    Such as:
Beaver defense isn’t as strong as in years past.
Beaver pitching does seems to give up walks.
Relief pitching is suspect for now.
Beaver offense makes few adjustments at the plate.
Mitch sounds like he is doing a Norm McDonald impression in interviews.
Pitching will decide how far this team can advance.

    • 2
      3

Ya I never get fans that get mad at you for being a FAN! No one is saying it’s doomsday and we suck. People have just noticed some issues early on that need to be fixed if this team wants to make a deep run. The whole similar numbers of walks and hit batters is nonsense. If we’re a top 10 team than we should be better than these unranked teams. It’s fine that caraway is a freshman at a new position and Guerra is playing a new spot as well but it nonetheless needs to get better. 4 errors thru 9 games by one player is pretty bad. I expect he’ll settle in eventually as he’s out of position and a freshman but he needs to get it figured out soon hopefully before it starts costing them.

  123. Anyone heard anything official on May? I know the last word was that they didn’t think it was anything of concern but it seems like that’s the standard response. Hoping he’s healthy.

  124. WBB drops slightly from #9 to #11, and are still in line to get a Top 4 seed as long as they don’t lose to CAL. They play #4 Stanford on Thursday @7:00PM, CAL on Saturday @12:00PM. Despite the #4 vs. #11 matchup, there’s no national TV broadcast for it. The game’s on PAC-12 Oregon. Not even the main PAC-12 channel, just the regional one. Anyone know Beer’s status?

    • Supposedly she has been fitted for a mask, I would assume that means the swelling has subsided and she will play with a mask.

She’s always played without being intimidated hopefully she is able to have the same mindset when she is able to play.

I haven’t heard is Brinks supposed to play? Interesting teams with questions regarding their best players.

Can’t make Saturdays game if anyone is looking for a pair of tickets let me know

People on this forum have seemed to diminish it when I’ve brought it up in the past, but I don’t care. Especially if we aren’t making it to Omaha, I kind of expect as a fan that we, at a minimum win the PAC 12 regular season title for the first time since 2017 nonetheless.

Might just be a personal pet peeve but I’ve always felt it weird to be a national champion without even winning your own conference, which is overall a greater measurement of sustained success and performance rather than just being able to get hot in the post season

  126. Idk what your guys deals are but if your away from cable internet in a rural area or something starlink is really good. I live off grid in Maui and had previously had viasat as it was my only option. It would be decent but you would hate it compared to cable. Viasat was expensive and throttle your data speeds back after a certain amount used (not much). Starlink got pushed forward out here because of the fires and people not having phone or internet service. Anyways I’m stoked and just thought I’d mention it be great for getting a game while camping or something too.

  127. Holy crap, is anyone watching the Nevada/CSU game? Jarod Lucas missed three of four shots foul shots in the final 20 seconds to let CSU tie it up with two seconds left and then he hits a half-court shot with no time to win the game on the road.

  128. Jon Wilner story on the future of CFP with WSU president Schultz:

“….Washington State’s president pitched the College Football Playoff’s governing board last week on granting permanent Power Five status to the Pac-12 even though the conference will consist of just two schools, Oregon State and WSU, as of next season.

Schulz made his case along with OSU’s president Jayathi Murthy — a joint proposal that received the CFP board’s full attention.

“There wasn’t a great deal of support,” Schulz told the Hotline. “One of the reasons given was the (future revenue model) hasn’t been determined yet. It’s hard to discuss distributions beyond the next couple years. But we appreciated the opportunity to make the pitch.”

…starting with the 2026 season, there is no playoff. No format. No governance structure. No revenue distribution plan. No media contract.

The expanded Big Ten and SEC, which will claim 12 of the 15 biggest brands in the sport next season — all the heavyweights except Notre Dame, Clemson and Florida State — are pushing for an outsized role in the next iteration of the playoff.

They want more money, more automatic bids and more votes in the boardroom. And the other conferences are powerless to stop them.”

Good to see Schultz and Murthy are still at it.

This should get ya past the paywall:
      https://archive.ph/Ab0L5

“Several presidents are committed to Oregon State and Washington State being an integrated part of the (CFP) conversations going forward,” Schulz said. “But what does that really mean? The situation could change.
“There is a profound sense of regret about the situation we’re in. A lot of presidents have told me, ‘That could have been us’ or ‘That could be us.’

      Several presidents “committed”… yeah, sure!

        • Well, maybe. But the guy held the deciding vote that could have collapsed the whole CFP/media rights deal. I have to think (and pray) he changed his vote for something more then 2 years of payouts that don’t really help us beyond that.

    • “The other conferences” aren’t powerless to stop them. They are just able to give the ACC and Big XII enough table scraps to buy them off.

If not for that, the other conferences would tell the SEC/B1G to take a hike.

    • 1

SEC and B10 continue to swirl down the drain…

      https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/columnist/dan-wolken/2024/02/29/14-team-college-football-playoff-proposal-big-ten-sec-want-it-all/72786426007/

It would be better for everyone if the SEC and Big Ten laid their cards on the table and took whatever spoils they want from college sports in one fell swoop as opposed to the craven way they’re going to spend the next decade rigging the game while pretending what they’re doing isn’t a choice.

Locking in six of the 14 playoff spots every year without even playing a game is just the beginning. You can be sure the SEC and Big Ten will argue for at least two and sometimes all three of the at-large spots as well because recent expansion has made their leagues too big and powerful to be judged against the peons.”

  129. Anyone need tix to Thursday, Friday or Sunday baseball games? I have two front row seats (yes, they really are) available. Either respond here or look for them at Seat Geek.

  130. Interview with May today. Said he felt some tightness in the forearm area and being early season not wanting to risk anything. He’s not pitching this weekend. Probably a good idea to not have him pi5ch even if he is healthy but man, if he’s going to be out multiple weeks because of “arm tightness” it smells of something worse. Truly hope not for his sake.

      • Let’s hope not but you’d have to assume that multiple missed starts means more. I get that they don’t want to release info and it’s obviously up to the athletes what they want to disclose but I don’t remember too many situations where a pitcher leaves a hand for arm tightness and it ends up being nothing. Hopefully for his sake it was just a weird tweak but history had not been kind to pitchers.

  131. Watched the MC interview and I wouldn’t be surprised if May might be held back for multiple weeks. Said everything is precautionary but depending on how May feels, if the weather is colder and raining that can be hard on arms so that type of stuff would be taken into consideration. So, after all the interviews I’ve come to the conclusion that we don’t know anything. Lol.

  132. Well, I hope the bats stay lively in this weather. So far Lawson has faced 6 batters in the Top 1st, 4BB and 1HBP, 3-0 NDSU with no outs.

  133. Lawson giving up 4 walks, a hit batter, 1 hit and 5 runs. Not even sure if he recorded an out. Hutcherson has been much better in 3 innings of relief. 1 walk, a few hits and only 1 run. Luckily Beavs have scored 9 and lead it 9-6 to start the 4th. But hey, I’ve been told walks aren’t an issue for this squad. Ferguson to start the 4th.

    • It may not have been your comment but I thought the initial complaints were about Dorman after the first weekend. I do see the team ERA is 6th best in the country. Less walks would of course be better but the Beavs are better than average in that category. I’m most concerned about the loss of Aiden May. He looked like a legit Friday night guy.

    • Part of that “in hand” is a result of the Bison not playing solid D. Poor throw to 1st on Hainline’s bunt and then the RF misplays Bazzana and give up a 2 RBI triple where a smart player would have limited it to a 1 RBI single.

OTOH, you have Tanner Smith making smart move to nail the runner from first for the final out in the t5.

    • Several AD’s…..
Kinda like the “several presidents committed to Oregon State and Washington State being an integrated part of the (CFP) conversations going forward…” mentioned above in the piece from the big zero.

      • It’s not that much of a stretch to think Cal and Stanford regret being part of the ACC, which is going to be the next conference to collapse. I’m sure Arizona’s broke AD isn’t loving the extra travel cost from being in the Big 12 either.

    • This is like the girl who dumped you later saying she never should have dumped you. I get it – these schools (all of the Pac12 schools) were asleep at the wheel figuring some TV entity would be willing to fork over $30m of TV revenue once UCLA and USC left – the rest of college football knew they wouldn’t (they already had deals with networks that told them this) and just waited until the Pac 12 realized this and offered a life raft (at a reduced TV money cut).

  136. Another rough performance from the pitching staff so far, only this time with no offense to make up for it. Beavs with only 1 hit, NDSU leads 5-0 in Top 5th.

    • Yeah, 2 hit batters, couple walks. Given up 8 hits. Not a good look to be giving up 11 runs in essentially 11 innings vs North Dakota State. This is our day 3 staff too. Hunter and then Keljo.

  137. Off night so far for the Beavs. Defensively, missed a few cutoffs and then had 3 or 4 guys all going for a shallow fly ball, Macias ends up having to dive for it and it results in a double as nobody covered 2nd base. Add in the pitching woes and it really feels like an off night for the Beavs. Down 5-1 going to the bottom of 6th. Good news is we’ve now made it to the bullpen after being stymied by the starter.

The one concern I have is how often they let the lead off batter get on base, and not via hits. Pitchers almost always seem to be pitching out of the stretch and can’t get into a rhythm.

      • Yeah, it’s early but these were the same issues last season and it’s some of the same guys too. Lawson wasn’t great last year and for some reason is one of RD’s top guys he likes to use. Lattery has some good stuff, but he has control issues and can’t go longer than 3 innings since he throws 25-30 pitches an inning. Losing Jimenez was definitely unfortunate and I sure hope May isn’t seriously injured as well. Thank God Segura has been so good.

  138. Thank goodness for relief pitching. Bases loaded walk and we’ve got a tie game. 5-5. Bases still juiced. 2 down. Kreig up to the plate.

  139. Only 3 hits in seven innings. The kid from Arkansas and, now, Johnson for the Bisons; those two can’t be the only tough arms to be faced this year. Beav bats will need help from pitching and D to be elite over the entire season.

Beavs up 6-5 going into the top of the 9th. The new umpire looks like he wants to get the game over. All three Beavs struck out looking in the 8th.

  141. Beers in 15 minutes finishes first half with 5pts, 2 rebs.
At the half, Beavs up 1. Cal has hit 5 3pt shots.
No stream that I’m aware of, anyone got one?

  142. Ant Gould currently tied for 4th with a 4.40 SEC 40 time. 17 guys have ran. Not sure how many there are but a pretty solid showing. Faster than Troy Franklin of the Yucks by .01

  143. Good Gals have blown it open up 74-52 with about two minutes left. They secure a first-round bye in the tourney next week. Beers impactful with 14/6 for the day.

    • 79-58 final….Hunter 13 pts/9 A, and Gardner 19 pts/8 RBS, with good games too…nearly double doubles.

Nice to see a true point guard in Hunter. Look forward to her continued development. This team should be good the next two seasons at least too…

      • With a first round by PAC 12 tourney, she should have a bit more time to continue healing, get comfortable, and get comfortable in her game.

        • Any surprise at the load she carried today? 29 minutes was only second to Gardiner’s 31.
Callan said she was a bit gassed at the end; I didn’t expect Rueck to use her as much as he did. Seems she’s ready to resume her usual role.

  144. Great outing by Kmatz. Hes put together 2 very good starts! Beavs been scoring runs even without the amount of long-ball they were getting earlier in season. Macias hits his 1st hr as a Beav. He’s actually been very decent for Kasper who’s been out still with an injury. Beavs a little banged up between Kasper, Wilson and May. Saw Smith mightve gotten hurt too? Didn’t see if he came out but I know they paused the game a bit to have him looked at for something.

    • I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Kmatz. There’s a noticeable increase in velocity on his pitches and he’s shown greater command through 2 games so far. I’m thinking the explosive power we saw through the first few games was largely a product of the dry Arizona air. The power hasn’t really been there since. Didn’t realize Weber was out with injury. I was wondering why he hasn’t been getting more chances in the lineup, considering Smith has been so-so offensively.

      • Can’t forget the conditions at Goss have been miserable and the ball doesn’t carry well in the alleys when it’s warm, let alone when it’s in the 30’s. They’re also without Kasper and he’s one of their better power hitters. A lot of factors limiting some of the pop we had been seeing in Texas and Arizona

        • True. The weather is most likely also a reason why the last 2 games the Beavs have kind of struggled against NDSU pitching, despite hitting well against Texas Tech, Michigan, and Oklahoma State.

  145. Kmatz has been absolutely locked in his last 2 outings. 0.64 ERA will definitely play. Huge news for the team if Kmatz can take a big step forward. Most of the pitching staff has been very good. Ian Lawson, Chase Reynolds and Nelson Keljo look like the clear cut weak links in the pen. With improved talent, I think these 3 are in real danger of getting buried when it comes time for Pac-12 play in 2 weeks. Keljo hasn’t taken a step forward like I thought he would and seems to have been surpassed by quite a few young arms.

Offensively, Macias has been fantastic. He needs to be their starting RF going forward. Use DH spot for Kasper/Turley when Kasper is back healthy. Hainline continues to be a mess at the plate. Not sure how much longer Mitch can keep him at SS. Trosky got 1 start, doubled and then hasn’t started since. They clearly want Hainline to have the job but at some point, you gotta make a change when the production just isn’t there. They need Mason Guerra to pick it up. He’s underperformed and if he’s gonna hit in the 2-3 hole, you need a lot more from him or he needs to be moved down the order.
Travis Bazzana right now is on pace to shatter every Oregon State offensive stat this season. He currently has an OPS over 300 points higher than Adley had as a junior and they haven’t even started intentionally walking him much yet. Incredibly special talent.

Side note: Oregon State’s stream is so bad this season. Compare it to Washington State with a vastly superior stream. Part of increasing exposure of college baseball is accessibility. Oregon State is arguably the best college program in the 21st century and it’s stream is well below what should be the standard.

We need Keljo to be on. One of the 2 lefties on the team. He’s got gas but clearly control still an issue. Lawson, Reynolds, Mejia definitely struggling so far. Still not super impressed with Lattery. Has a whip of 1.91 but showing a 0 ERA. He’s generally been good for limiting runs but he throws so many pitches each inning he can’t go more than 2 or 3 innings. I’d assume if May is indeed going to miss more time that Lattery will be that next guy in the rotation and we’ll need him to go more than 3 innings. 1st 2 games this series weren’t very pretty but today was the dominant performance we’d expect for the level of NDSU.

Hainline seems to be making better contact these last few games but batting .188 is pretty rough. Hell, even Dernedde was at least right around .200. I feel bad for Trosky. Should’ve been in front of Dernedde his freshman year and to still not be getting any playing time with Hainline struggling has to be frustrating. I’m not confident in MC making a change at SS even if Hainline continues to struggle…he didn’t for 2 years with Dernedde.

It’s funny we haven’t seen Levi Jones again. Had MC’s confidence vs Arkansas but yet can’t get a swing in vs NDSU with two 10 run rule wins.

Great to be sitting at 10 wins! Even on nights where the bats aren’t super lively, we’ll draw some walks and score in ways that don’t require the long ball, great to see.

  146. “Gould, a 5-foot-8, 174-pound receiver from Leavenworth, Kansas, earned an estimated athleticism score of 93, second highest among this year’s receivers at the combine.

Gould leaped 39.5 inches in the vertical jump and 10 feet, 9 inches in the broad jump.”

    • There’s got to be a team out there that can get more out of Gould than Lindgren could. Clearly his speed and athleticism are elite enough and yet we couldn’t find ways to get him the ball consistently. Too bad.

        • I am kind of rooting for them both to do well if only to prove it wasn’t the talent, but the coaching and playcalling that was always the issue.
Gould will be in an offense where he can run slants and actually be able to catch the ball in stride with space, rather than running another 8 sec route to the opposite sideline.

Bolden will either be a revelation of unknown talent to most of the nation or he will get buried just like Jam and not see the field. Sark probably knows how to use his receivers better than we saw with the last staff.

    • He needs to have that kind of athleticism to even be considered to be drafted.

Looking at the number of WRs drafted in the last few years, he’s somewhere in the late rounds. He’ll need to be drafted on a passing heavy team to have a career.

      • I don’t expect him to go early by any means and he very likely could even be UDFA. However, I do think a team will pick him up based on speed and athleticism. My thoughts are that he was clearly not utilized by the prior staff and that an NFL team should be able to find a way to make use of that. Whether it’s punt/kick returns or slot in 3 or 4 wide sets. What’s interesting is that I could actually see him or Bolden doing well under Gundy’s offense where you’ll see more 3 wide sets and those 2 spending more time in the slot.

  147. 2 quick outs by Segura then a short throw by Caraway that should’ve been scooped by Guerra at first. Oof. Definitely the 2 biggest defensive liabilities out there. Then next batter Caraway has a second error…unable to field cleanly. However, grounder to 2nd ends the inning. Fundamentals lacking so far this season.

  148. Trosky with a bases loaded triple. Right field kind of got a bad read and had to dive for the ball…missed and went to the wall. 4-0 Beavs going to the second inning.

  149. Hainline delivers a 2 RBI double. Trosky with 4 rbi so far and a nice double play where he stepped on bag and tossed to 1st. I hope Hainline can get on track and be what he was last season but man, Trotsky has just looked better and deserves playing time.

I’m not sure we’d want that travel…tough call over the prestige. I guess to be relevant you’d have to begrudgingly do it.

If the rumored ‘leaving teams’ go, wd the ACC be any better than any of the west coast conferences? I hope the Beavs knock the crap out of Cal fb, and send them on to New Jersey or wherever. I wonder if Condoleezza Rice and gwbush will be watching Stanford in the ACC games in the east. They will have 12 years to do it. For people who are so smart, that’s pretty dumb.

        • @helmsley. Yeah, I think they’ll watch Stanford games in the east. It’s really not that hard. Let’s say, for example, the Cardinal are
playing a 1:00 game in the east. Condolezza and W will simply turn their tv’s on at 10:00. Now, let’s go nuts and say they want to attend a game in person. Fly out on Friday and enjoy a great dinner that evening wherever the Cardinal are playing. Next morning maybe workout, have a nice breakfast, then tailgate with some alum before kickoff. That night, with any luck, celebrate a victory over another nice dinner, then fly home Sunday with three hours in hand. The great thing about it is this. You don’t really have to be all that smart to pull it off.

From what OSU has been saying, they don’t want their athletes to travel to the east coast. I would rather bring in the MW and add a few others from the Midwest. BIG, SEC, and Big 12 all have teams on par with MWC. OK State’s Stillwater is smaller than Corvallis and though they are fairly near the OK City, that town has a team. I say take the MWC and whatever falls out of the ACC. PAC whatever is more prestigious than the ACC.

    • Def wouldn’t be ideal. They’d be smart to try and add a couple more west coast teams, like an SDSU, so you could play most the games in the coast nearest to you to limit that travel. If the B1G had added Beavs and WSU, that’s 6 west coast teams that could play most their games vs each other. Still not ideal but less x-country trips during the year would go a long way.

Atticus Sappington has deleted every last Oregon State picture from his Instagram and is now hilariously already peddling “Once a Duck, Always a Duck” merchandise before he’s even made it through his first spring camp as if he’s been forged by UO.

It’s things like this that make one have to step back and reflect on the fact that these players and coaches may have been on the team, but it’s truly just business to all of them and most of them truly don’t have the care and passion about OSU and Corvallis that we do as fans. Most of our players and coaches don’t have OSU family history. Most didn’t grow up in Oregon surrounded by OSU vs UO spirit. We’re a stepping stone to them. Even for former players like Smith.

Now I know Sappington is Oregon born and raised so with how quickly he jumped ship, popped up at UO, and erased all traces of OSU from his online profile, one has to think he probably grew up a Duck and wanted to play there his entire life but ended up settling for OSU, then jumped over there at the first opportunity. Absolutely brutal. Most players don’t delete their old team photos when they transfer. Maybe there was drama?

Come to think of it, do you all think Mike Parker has done enough to redeem himself for being a Duck alumni? It had to have felt so weird for him early on to call our games.

  152. Damn, OSU WBB down to #13 in final AP poll. Strong finish w/Beers back though.

Time for new threat with Bray kicking off Spring Football starting tomorrow and WBB post season?

    • Hayes the only kicker listed. Terry still listed as a TE. Might have had a change of heart after the transfers

Green still has eligibility. Didn’t recall that.

    • Exodus Ayers is listed as 6’0″. He was 6’3″ on the recruiting sites, so I expected him to be at least 6’2″. Was his height really exaggerated by 3 inches? There’s also a RS FR DL named Tiger Black. I hope he’s good enough to get playing time.
