Spring FB, WBB post season, and more chances for Baseball to grow

996

Plenty to discuss with news sure to come for 3 of the Beavs major athletic teams:

1) Baseball faces Mark Banker’s old school, Cal State Northridge, for a 4 game matchup at Goss starting Thursday. Looks to be a better test than the Bisons (maybe better weather, too).

2) WBB gets the first round bye and the return of Bat Woman…err Raegan. Get past Colorado or Oregon on Thursday and likely face Stanford in the semi Friday. What’s it gonna take to end up in the Portland regional for the big dance?

3) FOOTBALL is back. What will we learn about this team, about Bray’s approach, about the style of Heyward and DeVan? Which coach has the biggest challenge this time around? Why?

Always a great time to be a Beav!

  1. I want to see McCoy Or Johnson emerge as clear playmakers who can make the right decisions take advantage of a deep RB stable…that requires a good O Line too….on D, tackling please. Form tackling for 4 quarters….I think 8+ wins is success given the amount of change.

  2. I think coach Gundy or Devan have the hardest jobs. Devan will be busy rebuilding the Oline and finding the best 5 guys. But Gundy has to install a whole new offense and develop the QBs in the system so because of that and him being a first time play caller I think he’s got the hardest job. The future success probably hinges on these two the most also.

    • I saw a mock today that had the Chargers raking hin at #5, i was quite surprised.

UO’s Franklin (only 176 lbs, 10 lbs less than his listed playing weight) and Irving (4.55 forty) apparently may have hurt their draft stock.

  3. Spring ball is going to be fascinating. New offense system with almost every skill position up for grabs. I do expect Johnson to be in the lead for the starter going into the summer.

Defense should dominate the entire spring. A little bit more talent on that side of the ball. The door is wide open for a lot of guys to step through and become playmakers.

Defensive line might have the most talent with the added transfers. Transfers Schuster, Hill and Pome’e were all high three stars out of high school. Add Howard as the top recruit last year and it’s a good recipe for success.

I’d say DeVan and Tuiaki have the biggest challenges. These units need to be the strength of the team as they’ll make things easier for everyone else.

    • You think Johnson’s the favorite? I kind of feel like McCoy is. Johnson is super exciting with his running ability but hasn’t played one down of college ball yet. With the new offense the race is even as far as it goes with familiarity. It will definitely be fun to follow the race.

  4. Wynston Russell (DB) and Porter Phillips (MLB) have left the team. Russell saw some time sparringly but don’t recall Phillips at all. Assume that he was a walk-on. They’re both already off the roster on the OSU app so this appears to have been in the works for quote some time as these changes were just reported yesterday. Based on some previous reporting by Beav Blitz, to the best of my recollection, they assumed at least 10 guys were going to leave program and that makes a lot of sense being over the scholly limit as much as they are.

As for QBs, I’d assume McCoy has the inside track to be qb1 and Johnson and BG would need to look head and shoulders above. Being a new system, BG’s experience in the program doesn’t give him too much of an edge, especially when many of the WR are new to program as well so they’ll all be building those QB/WR connections.

      • I think McCoy might be the best and getting rid of the ball quickly and using check downs. But that’s based on very limited film shared by ZenBeav….they’re definitely going to need some quick route options and timing routes. I thought timing routes were poorly executed these past few years with smaller receivers that seemed to struggle to separate.

    • Bray on McCoy:
“When we were looking in the portal for a quarterback, there were all these guys that were five stars out of high school ball, but they were third-string at these (colleges),” Bray said. “And we’re watching this kid from Idaho, and I just kept going back to Gundy, like, ‘Why is this kid at Texas better than this kid at Idaho? Like show me why.’

When the best explanations focused on high school success and old star ratings, Bray and Gunderson went with their eyes and their guts over recruiting rankings.

“Gevani wanted to be here, and we wanted him,” Bray said. “So it was like, ‘I like this kid. You like this kid. Let’s do it.’ He’s a really good player. He’s a proven winner. I mean, he helped change a program that was in the dumps to one of the best at that level. And he did it against Cal, against Power Five teams, with FCS talent around him.”

“He’s a proven winner, a guy that can do it,” Bray said. “We’re not looking for a rebuild. We need a guy that can win now and that’s why we brought him in here.”

      https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2024/03/oregon-state-enters-spring-football-with-another-quarterback-battle-but-trent-bray-really-happy-with-talent-in-room.html

      • “When the best explanations focused on high school success and old star ratings, Bray and Gunderson went with their eyes and their guts over recruiting rankings.”

I’m surprised he mentioened Murphy that way as his example, but it’s exactly what i was asking when we were looking for portal QBs. Murphy didnt pass the eyeball test to me. Big and athletic kid, no doubt. But he just didnt look like that quick decision maker like I want in a QB. Like a DJU reboot. He”ll probably do fine at Duke, but I also dont expect he’ll be a game changer for them. I still like Johnson’s game the best, but the inexperience probably puts him behind McCoy and BG for now

    • Old
Pluses: NFL experience, knows Michigan’s process on O-line development (something that will take more than a year), alum who can sincerely sell OSU
Minuses: Coming from the NFL means he has yet to establish firm recruiting roots

      • He’s been coaching college for the last 8 years including stops at Arizona, Michigan, and Colorado so I would say he probably has some strong relationships.

        • He just needs to put it all together for a couple years. He hasn’t been anywhere stable at any one point with as much experience as he now has… or should have.

  5. Every time I read Bray quotes about his view on anything football/strategy/personnel/coaching philosophy, I’m impressed and almost convinced that he has been an underground angrybeavs contributor for the last 15 years.
I imagine Bray is one of us with the opportunity and recognizes the flaws in Riley, Smith, GA; but also embodies some of the astute qualities for basic strategic advantage and sound coaching without the nonsensical coach speak. Bray is all of the best elements so far.

      • Is it too much to ask to get a reboot of our media who cover OSU?
Feels like it’s all a bunch of fans covering the team. Which works to a certain extent because of their knowledge of program history and familiarity….but also feels like a it will be tough to get an impartial critique of the team. Everybody wants to see Bray succeed, including me. But I also feel like we need some people who can watch practice and form realistic expectations based on what they’re seeing.

        • I don’t think many media outlets have columnists anymore. That’s what you’re looking for. Beat writers have to toe the line so they can keep access. They can ask hard questions in the press conferences but they can’t/won’t publish critiques.

Realistic take – Bray has a long uphill climb. Basically new everyone and new system. Can he get it all together in 6 months? probably not.

          • Does all together mean 11 wins?…..7 wins?
Is all together easier to achieve with this schedule?

I’m sure Bray will still be learning and improving over the next several years; still hoping (just hoping, not predicting) he’ll have it together enough to keep up interest and excitement around the program….say 8-9 wins, with almost no “head shaker” decisions either in game or off the field as well.

          • I was thinking if could he answer all the questions in general. There are a lot

Suddenly needs to hire a new defensive coach.
Who is the starting QB? How much of Gundy’s system can they really install? Will they get a long leash or always be looking over their shoulder?
Can the offensive line be effective so the best player can be the best player,
Can the defensive line gel so it frees up the rest of the defense to make plays?
Who will be the guys to step up and fill all the production that left on both sides of the ball? Lots of candidates with tons of potential, not a lot of experience.
Can he get the most out of the transfers he brought in? A few of last year’s transfers were disappointing. Taylor, Ivy and Omotosho for example. Tufaga if healthy, can he live up to his potential.

Bray and his staff have to coach up like crazy this spring and fall.

          • “Bray and his staff have to coach up like crazy this spring and fall.”

What do you think if his “go-slow” approach to spring ball, with installing new offense with do many new players? I recall Mike Riley saying he coached to the slowest learners to bring everyone along together. In contrast, Chip Kelly said he coached to the fastest and I think in so doing was able to sort competitors.

I hope Gunderson has and can articulate a clear vision for the offense. I know he said what he runs has to be based on the roster, but the top 3 QBs all look very different from each other and the OLine looks like a liability, RBs clearly a strength. I suspect McCoy will emerge as QB1 with likely the best combination of some mobility and likely the quickest decision making and getting rid of the ball. In his FCS film he looks like a relatively quick dealer.

The D should be able to play faster and really challenge the O and bliw them up in fall ball.

          • 2
            1

There’s a metric shit ton of change and a suspect O Line. For 10+ wins the D is going to have to be getting takeaways and extra possessions for the O, special teams better be special, and the Reser home field advantage needs to be in effect for 7 wins at home (I expect Oregon will win big in week 3, OSU better be getting at least $2M for that game).

At BSU could be very challenging, throw in the coulda-shoulda games, and i suspect 9 wins is a fairly high level of success in year one.

  6. May, Kasper and McDowell are “day to day” or something to that effect per MC. May hasn’t thrown bullpen at all. Wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t pitch but it sounds like he’s at least been playing catch. Wilson Weber might get some at-bats this week in practice and could see time if needed. Good that we didn’t need to rely on these guys but damn, that’s legit 5 guys (including Jimenez) banged up 2 weeks in.

What’s Tinkle’s contract situation? With football basically being over, it would be nice to become a basketball school again.

Wow. Ducks wbb lost 30-79 vs Colorado. The collapse is incredible. I mean, even our men’s team hasn’t lost by 50.

    • UO with 11 points at the half. Uglee. 10/53 from the field, 1/13 from Three.

Lady Buffs (Buff Ladies) face Beaver Gals tomorrow at 1:00 pm. OSU defeated CU twice this season. Watch for physical play and cheap shots around Beers…

      • 2

Not only around Beers. They try a few “physical” plays to see if they can get away with them. How the refs call Thugalo games does make a difference.

A reliable twitter follower is telling me it’s looking like we’ll hire Rod Chance as the Perkins replacement at CB Coach.
He used to coach at Oregon with Heyward.

      • Gopherbeaver may have some thoughts.

Cursory look, his best recruits appear to be during his stops at Oregon. He’s listed as being the primary recruiter for two cornerbacks both in ’20 & ’21.

Footprint is mostly Georgia, California, and Florida.

        • We know athletes go to oregon for the academics and the love for Eugene. Will he be recruiting with the same resources and saddle bags?

  10. Unsurprisingly, seeing stories about SEC wanting to cut out “non-earners” in their conference…not wanting to share that $309M/year from ESPN….

    • Eventually some of the earners will become non-earners when they become perennial doormats. The conference will shrink until it reaches two teams.

      • Whole thing is “Game of Thrones” -like really….SEC and B10 as the brother and sister..

Come to think of it, i quit watching that too..never finished the series.

    • Predictable.
Figure from SEC- Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Missouri, Miss St, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Texas A&M from SEC all gone soon, basically traded out for Oklahoma and Texas
From Big10- Minnesota, Northwestern, Rutgers, Maryland, Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, UCLA all gone basically traded out for USC, UW and Oregon

They will attempt to get down to about 28 schools between them and then try to say they are the elite schools/only elite conferences with all of the “best” brands. It will be really funny watching all of the perennial “SEC” fans get cut out of the mix simply because they were the conference patsies for such a long time. The ESPN guys pulling the strings don’t comprehend that without patsies and gaps in scheduling, the charade of SEC strength will be greatly diminished. Everyone can’t finish top 10 with 1 loss year after year unless you rig the schedule and add more teams to create the scheduling misses yearly.
SEC has had 1 less conference game each year than all other conferences and also has not had to worry about head to head meetings for many of the top programs. It allows for 2-3 1 loss teams to float through and perpetuates the illusion long enough that talent began to shift to the SEC from other regions. This is what happened through the 2000-2010 period and ESPN was subtly pushing their chosen conference until they no longer needed to be subtle and now they are going full throttle into the next phase which is massive dismantling of major college conferences with the goal of creating a 24-32 brand super semipro league that they can control like NFL, only without owners, salary caps etc.

PAC2, Big12, ACC, American, MWC, MAC all need to join in an effort to force the SEC/BIG10/ESPN/FOX alliance out into the open by presenting a united vision for a new postseason experiment that excludes those 2 conferences. Refuse to participate and engage with Apple/Amazon and create a streaming future for college football that allows schedules to become more organically Saturday afternoon for all schools not part of the semipro brands system. If all conferences outside of SEC/Big10 refused to schedule them, or partcipate in their charade, the outcome could be some more rational decision making by all involved.
Language means a lot in this situation. The idea from, ESPN has been that there were 5 “Power” conferences, now we are down to 4 “Power” conferences and ESPN has the goal and ability to sink the ACC by next fall. The advantage by numbers in fandom, alumni, boosters, geography, athletes, self interest do not lie with SEC/Big10 remnant schools. The “power” advantage lies with the 80-100 schools that will be on the outside of the coming reset for ESPN’s media monster, an SEC/BIG10 superconference.
If all of these schools represented as those left out, were to unite and devise a new strategy and new playoff system with fair and equal scheduling and a common goal of true competition, it could reverse the course of the last few years of money chasing by so many schools.

      • arkansas wins in sports other than football

i know football drives the bus but those sec power teams will want to keep arkansas texas cant run that conf like they did the big 12
IF the SEC loses any teams it will be

i couild see the only way all schools agree is there is no way they can be cut out ex for vandy and nu

  11. WBB defeated CU twice this year:

    Jan 26 – 68-62
    Feb 9 – 65-59

I think beating a team 3 straight times can be challenging psychologically when the teams are competitively matched. CU will likely go thugball, hopefully Rueck can motivate his squad and keep them from getting distracted by cheap tactics.

    Go Beavers!

  12. Women down 25-22 at the half after an ice cold first quarter…

    https://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=500137

And Brenda Tracy suing Mel Tucker/MSU for $75M
    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/investigations/2024/03/07/mel-tucker-msu-sued-brenda-tracy/72871293007/

“The crux of Tracy’s legal action is that her reputation was sullied by Tucker’s sexual harassment and subsequent threats, his release of her private text messages with her deceased best friend and business assistant, and the university’s failure to both prevent his misconduct and maintain the confidentiality of its investigation into her claim against him. Those actions also hamstrung her charitable work, damaged her future earnings and caused her severe psychological and emotional harm, the two filings allege.

She is seeking damages exceeding $75 million – $50 million for herself and $25 million for her nonprofit – for a range of claims, including breach of contract, infliction of emotional distress and invasion of privacy.”

And former a former Beaver is now their Football HC….what a small world…

    • Shocking, a Brenda Tracy article coming from USA Today?
The media outlet she initially leaked the Tucker/MSU story to, because no other media outlet would pay her for the story.
The media outlet that first brought the text messages between Tracy and her assistant to the public’s attention (but omitted the pieces Tracy didn’t want produced publicly).
So now she’s suing somebody else for sharing additional details from those text conversations?

I don’t like anybody in this entire debacle, so I guess it’s a win/win the longer they drag it out

  13. i don’t know how you defend a player when they’re allowed to barrel into the lane and clear space with their elbows on offense. just need to outscore them.

    Overtime 2 coming

  14. this team is so stinking resilient but man we are ice cold. Would have like to see Hunter ISO/drive on that last play of OT.

  15. Beers missing 3 straight free throws. Looks gassed after big minutes. Too bad because Colorado’s starting center just fouled out, but Beers is going to rest.

  16. Spring camp videos up on the recruiting sites. Sounds like Gundy and his offense will be qb friendly and involve easy completions to the playmakers. Kind of what we’ve been screaming for. Also he wants to get the ball to Dame/rbs in space through the passing game.

    • That sounds good now that we have Jam and Hankerson to catch passes. Catching the ball was not a strength of the RB room without Lowe and Jam.

  17. Sherod yells “What the fuck?!!” at the ref after a correct foul call. Ref allows it.

Better execution down the stretch by the Beavs. Looking like they’ll pull this out
    great game

    • Stay classy Buffalo gals!

Thug basketball is a terrible product and ruins the game. Even worse in girls basketball.
Beavs just need to get out of the last
      40 seconds with no injuries.

    • “Sherod yells “What the fuck?!!” at the ref after a correct foul call. Ref allows it.”

NCAA WBB and coach behavior going down the shitter too. As WBB increases in value (viewership, ads, etc.) game quality degrades because the “entertainment” aspect often becomes negative behaviors…

I love it the Beavs WBB and football seem to have sportsmanship, integrity, and represent OSU so well, but the more the games degrade, the worse the odds for them, particularly WBB.

  18. “…hopefully Rueck can motivate his squad and keep them from getting distracted by cheap tactics.”

They do it, 85-79 in 2OTs.

    Fuck yeah.

I know the WT article was shared earlier in the thread. I love this comment “from the outside looking in, you might not see the progress”. Lol. Stop gaslighting! 3 years of last place finishes! 20-40 pt blowouts! Almost half the wins this year were those OT wins vs D3 schools. But yeah, it’s our fault cause we’re on the outside looking in. I know we can’t move on from WT, but anyone who actually thinks this is OK and is wanting to have WT stick around should be institutionalized.

    • Tinkle is and has been a fraud.

The change in sportsmanship in women’s basketball I think can be traced to 3 things:
1)ESPN needed someone other than UConn coach Auriema to become a national brand coach.
      2) A lighting rod Coach was needed: Kim Mulkey became the showboat poor sport coach who acted as the lightning rod of love/hate style. She began the process of eroding sportsmanship from the sidelines
      3) A lightning rod program was needed: In order make NCAA WBB/WNBA more appealing, the networks needed star players and familiar coaches with distinct systems. Enter Dawn Staley at South Carolina. She decided to incorporate a new version of Georgetown Hoya/Detroit Pistons in women’s basketball by being bigger, and more physical than any other team. But it isn’t an elegant style of basketball anymore.
ESPN and SEC in general self promote, but in South Carolinas case, it is with the intention of creating another lightning rod for love/hate viewership based on the coach being able to be an obnoxious sideline act, the team getting a lot of referee favoritism within their style of play, because we all know “you can’t call everything.”
Predictably what follows is a copycat effect of lesser programs adopting a style similar to South Carolina, such as Colorado.
Showboating, me-mugging, demonstrations of primal scream nonsense are all part of some kind of weird charade in which we see competitive young women seemingly needing to mimic men’s sports and all that is lacking there as well.

The goal is to win, but I always prefer it within the rules and the spirit of the rules, accompanied by good sportsmanship, respecting the opponent, honoring the game by not trying to upstage the players on the court as a coach. Of course, these aren’t reality anymore and the big reason why I can’t watch NBA at all. I have no ints in the manufactured product that has been created.

  20. Beavs lead Cal State Northridge 6-2 in the 7th.

Can someone tell Worden to stop referring to the opponent as SEE SUN?

  21. I haven’t been listening or watching, only checking live stats, but was a reason given for why Caraway isn’t playing?

    • Probably rest? He’s played every game so far and it’s a long season for the freshman guys. I hadn’t heard anything injury related. Against the lower competition it probably makes sense to get reps in. Also gave a chance for Guerra at 3rd and Kreig at 1st

    • “God bless little children while they’re still too young to hate”……Tom T Hall

Came to mind when I watched Gunderson’s open and honest comments; not what you get from a coordinator who has been around the block. I like it, but will it result in points?

    • Pretty likable. He seems quite a bit happier or comfortable with himself when compared against Lindgren, who always seemed a little surly.

A short clip of Martinez being asked why he stayed in Corvallis (Core values/loyalty/etc..)

How many times do the media need to keep asking the same fucking question though?
He already answered them once, then the same reporter asks him again, like “was it a tough decision?”…..”why?”
The reporter even admitted something like “you’ve been telling me all along loyalty was your reason for staying……so i’m going to ask again”
And then after the first reporter asks him the same question multiple ways, another reporter chimes in with essentially the same question.

We get it, the media wants him to say “they’re paying me a bunch of money to stay” but at some point just let it go and find something new and interesting to ask about.

  23. I’ve enjoyed watching the interviews with the coaches after practice. You can see why Bray is a good recruiter. High energy. Excited. Sense of humor. Laid back. I’m sure some of that is new job excitement and whatnot but we know he brings the energy to everything. Definitely a stark contrast to the prior guy. Not a knock on the reserved nature of Traitor Smith but you can see why guys gravitate and stick with Bray. The other coaches seem to be similar in that aspect of being approachable, sense of humor, etc. That kind of excitement and attitude permiates to the players…have to imagine that there is a little more fire to them. I liked what Gundy said yesterday about being adaptive to the skill-set of the players. Yes, he has a scheme and idea in mind but he wants to be flexible based on personnel. It seemed at times that Lingren was much more rigid in his approach. Clearly Gould and Bolden would likely have been even more impactful in a slot position, or set in motion more and yet it was a lot of outside receiver sets for them. I get the feeling Gundy would have been more flexible in his utilization of those guys.

UW fires their basketball coach. Will the Beavs do the same? Unlikely given the financial constraints. Would need a donor to pay the entire buyout.

    • 1
      1

Would have to be very public as to how it is donated. Short session Oregon legislature appropriated 10 mil to Oregon State because of realignment & Murthey’s request during the previous session.”Thanks, we can fire the mbb coach now.” Is there such a thing as renegotiating his contract? Different league, less money, fewer games, etc.

      • You can negotiate a buyout with a coach, but unless there’s a reason “for cause” there’s little leverage for the school. If Tinkle had any respect for the school he would offer to take a payout at a discount and move on to another job. However, he had little reason to do so other than helping OSU.

  25. Good Gals double tree in the first quarter, 24-12 lead. Everyone contributing. Could this last another 30 minutes?

Brink held to 3 for 9 with 1 rebound.

    • They shot about the same number of both FGs and 3s, OSU got several more FTs…shooting % favored Stanford, particularly from 3 where Jump got hot with four .

I didn’t watch game, just checking scoreboard and stats.

  26. The regularity of Beavers cold streaks – and their duration – is shocking.

Brinks turning bricks into rebounds, Stanford 48-41 now, beavers haven’t scored in last 3 minutes.

  27. Re: the Gundy video above, he seems like he’s heavily focused on the players as people and the mental side of the game. He’s also very open and honest; as someone above mentioned, he seems more secure in himself than a lot of coaches.

I wonder if he has the intensity it takes to be a winner. He has a chill vibe that’s a little like Riley’s. He’s definitely his own person, but how many successful coaches come across as chill?

        • In his own aggressive way, he’s controlled. He makes me want to go shoot hoops after I hear him talk. He’s more like Petersen than Smith is, regarding aggression and control.

    • I can’t get a read on CSUN. Other than two losses to Utah Valley, they look like a solid club.

But it’s Utah Valley. Those kind of series make them look not solid.

  28. Good to see Trosky playing today. He’s been in 7 games and started 3. Batting .364 with 7 rbi’s in 11 at bats. Hainline played in 13 games and started 13. 40 at bats. Has 11 rbi’s and is batting .250. Both have very similar OB%. Trosky deserves more playing time.

  29. Watched the Gundy interview. He’s clearly aware of how much pressure he is under to create an offense with entirely new players especially at QB.

The big concern is that he has not called plays at any level before. Wonder if he’s a on field guy or in the booth.

  30. So, Caraway is out of lineup again. He hasn’t played all series if I’m not mistaken. Seems there could be more here than just resting…especially since these last 2 games have been close. Hainline at 3rd, Trosky an 2nd. Kreig at 1st. Kasper still sitting. McDowell, Turley and Macias in the outfield. Segura on the bump..

  31. Krieg has been a dude this series. Think he’s had 3 hr and 2 doubles. Hard to keep him on the bench too. Team is loaded offensively.

    • McDowell full game at dh, HR to give Beavs 3 run lead at the close of the 8th.
What’s latest on McDowell’s condition? Must be nearing 100%, right?

      • I’d think so. He’s played multiple games this series and Macias has been very good so no need to rush things. I’m hoping the cold weather is what’s keeping guys benched vs long-term issues. Kasper being out this long is a little surprising.

    • Funny when the ESPN announcer said, “we don’t want this,” as the fight broke out. It is exactly what they want. And yes…unwatchable product…

      • Cmon! Don’t be so naive. ESPN has had a medi deal with SEC for about 15 years now and anything SEC becomes headlines. Any attention is good attention so they don’t mind the ugly publicity because it takes time away from other conferences anyway. ESPN broadcasters and talking heads will get to “debate” the rise of women’s basketball and the reactions of…surprise- Kim
mullet and Dawn Staley. Both mentioned in my above post

Just looked up who they’re making fun of.

Turns out she was a student who was jogging and met a Ted bundy type of death.

I’m not sure what the rules are about making fun of someone’s death, but I feel like this kind of victim wouldn’t be on my list of permissible people to choose as my target.

Nobody is making fun of anyone’s death. They’re making fun of the mush mouthed dementia patient that’s too old to read off the teleprompter clearly.

Hmm. So I turned 20 in Vietnam, in a place just outside a place called dog patch. Marine Corporal. Later in my career in the Corps, I served as a Major in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Retired as a slightly decorated Lieutenant Colonel. Retired with honor after a 30 year career as an Enlisted Marine, Staff NCO, Warrant Officer, Chief Warrant Officer, Company Grade Officer (LDO (Mustang)) and Field Grade Officer.

Served as an analyst for DOD until my retirement.

But now, somehow I am a fascist because I want to warn you about the FBI.

I am surprised you didn’t call me a racist.

Don’t thank me for my service. It was my honor to serve the United States of America!

Are “reeducation” camps still a thing in wacky world? I haven’t heard a reference to them in over 20 years. What comedian is recycling that dumb trope?

Are they the same “internment” camps in Arkansas that were “disovered” during Bubba’s Presidency?

Let’s not forget Obama. When Obama whispered to Medvedev to tell Vlad that he (Obama) would be more flexible after Obama’s reelection.

Vlad took that message to heart and invaded Crimea. Obama was very flexible and just sat back and enjoyed the Olympics.

Then in Obama’s third term in office (with Biden as his front man) Vlad invaded the remaining parts of Ukraine.

          • I should have started reading these wacky takes from the top, not the bottom.

This is stellar fear-mongering stupidity, and it flies in the face of your claim that you worked for DoD in any capacity as anything other than an errand boy. What did you know of Ukraine’s leadership structure at the beginning of the Obama Admin? And why do you think Russia invaded Crimea, once it began to alter in favor of the West?

Obama’s greatest failure was not acting fast enough to keep Russia from repeating the war crimes they committed in Chechnya. He and Congress could have acted in this way even after they did it in Syria. Georgia is next, given the news out of Ingushetia.

          • No Jack it isn’t a song.

But thanks for the dumb throwbacks to tropes I had simply forgotten about, they were so silly. It’s fun to recall those younger days.

Meanwhile, I suppose you think the guy who can’t even make money running a casino is a brilliant businessman? How can anyone have lived in the time of Dumbshit Donald and not know he’s an immensely stupid human being? If you were truly daling with DoD, why do you not listen to each of his Cabinet members? They all said he is the stupidest fucking moron they’ve ever encountered.

          • This stuff just pisses me off. Are any of you happy with our leadership in this country? Is spouting talking points going to change each others mind? If the answer is NO, let’s get back to talking OSU athletics. Politics are not a sport, its not my team is good and the other is bad. If you can’t criticize your “own” team, then you are part of the problem.

  32. Baseball Check-in

Wins are wins even when ugly. Hitting is not an issue and Beavs are showing they have some good depth with a few guys sitting out the weekend. Leaves the future bright with Trosky and Krieg back next year. Weather sure did slow down the HR power but team showed they can produce a lot of runs without the long ball. That’s the kind of offense built for the long term.

Pitching however is still show the same issues. Walked or hit 101 batters so far.
    BB per 9 history – 2024 – 6.7, 2023 – 4.7, 2022 – 3.3, 2021 – 5.3

That’s not good combine with opponent batting avg being the lowest since 2021 and K per 9 rate holding at the same rate as last year. Pitchers need to start throwing more strikes. Free bases will sink them in the postseason. Not real sure if this is a Dorman pitch calling issue or a pitcher execution issue. Probably both.

However, not all bad news. #4 in RPI and top 5 in all the polls. The rest of the PAC12 is having a down year so the conference is there for the taking and that should be the expectation.

  33. Meckler is going to make the Giants have to make a tough choice. He’s having a great spring, maybe there’s a team out there with major outfield needs that will trade for him. Giants are pretty full. He’s pretty much profiling the same as Kwan, just right handed.

  34. T J on Joe Beaver program today. I am not missing the old movie quotes and the reverential approach to the Beavs. TJ dares to talk abt some of fb last year’s shortcomings. I’d be interestied to hear what he would do with mbb.

  35. “reverential approach to the Beavs”…sadly Mike Parker can’t simply speak his mind because he is under contract with the school. I’m sad for Mike because he can’t just say what we all see in reality, but has to pretend to look on the bright side continually.

    • Then who does TJ contract with?; he only pointed out that given DJ’s throwing inaccuracies and short receivers last year, the passing game was not so great. TJ also talked abt Gunderson’s press conference, Chip Kellly. No reason MP can’t do that.

    • Then who does TJ contract with?; he only pointed out that given DJ’s throwing inaccuracies and short receivers last year, the passing game was not so great. TJ also talked abt Gunderson’s press conference, Chip Kellly. No reason MP can’t do that.

      • I think he has said he has 2 different contracts. One with Learfield under OSU sports and another contract with KEJO radio. But since he is the voice of the Beavers he has to abide by the first contract before the second… something like that, and Mike generally doesn’t like to sound critical of OSU because he has to interview coaches and players all the time and wouldn’t want to burn bridges.

  36. I read in the Mercury News what the PAC-12 men’s basketball coaches currently make and the length of their contract. It is interesting to see that Tinkle is the 4th highest paid of the 9 that were reported. If OSU paid a new coach what WSU pays theirs, the Beavs would save $3.6 million in salary over the next 3 years. That would mean the net buyout cost of Tinkle’s contract would be $4.6 million if the cost of today’s $ verses future $ is not taken into consideration. But the Beavs probably don’t have that $8.1 million buyout right now. Also the Beavs may have to pay a buyout for the new coach to leave his job now or in 2027.
Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd – Contract: $5.6 million (signed through 2028-29)
Arizona State’s Bobby Hurley – Contract: $2.6 million (signed through 2025-26)
Cal’s Mark Madsen – Contract: $2.1 million – Did not give the duration of his contract but said this is his first year.
Colorado’s Tad Boyle – Contract: $2.5 million (signed through 2026-27)
Oregon’s Dana Altman – Contract: $4 million (signed through 2027-28)
Oregon State’s Wayne Tinkle – Contract: $2.7 million (signed through 2026-27)
Stanford’s Jerrod Haase – Contract: Terms not disclosed
UCLA’s Mick Cronin – Contract: $4.1 million (signed through 2027-28)
USC’s Andy Enfield – Contract: Terms not disclosed
Utah’s Craig Smith – Contract: $2.1 million (signed through 2026-27)
    Washington: vacant
Washington State’s Kyle Smith – Contract: $1.5 million (signed through 2026-27)

We did just get that $10mill from the State of Oregon for the sports…maybe that’s to buy Tinkle out? Can’t think of a much better way to use that money tbh.

      • Imo, that wd be a terrible look. Murthey’s point was lost income from game day traffic, &, perhaps people who weren’t interested when the Beavs weren’t in a power 5.

    • I wanna barf! I wonder what MBB season ticket sales are at? I would think at an all time low. If we could buyout Tinks and hire a big name coach who is a proven winner it would create renewed interest and excitement and ultimately increased ticket sales to offset the cost of buying out Tinks. Just a thought.

  37. OL coach DeVan practice #4 interview pretty enjoyable:

    https://youtu.be/bYolNZ2b9OU?si=fxO2xF806YIwRLmo

Coach M already established a high standard.
DeVan wants OLine to be physical, fast, and smart.
Bray wants the game and team to be fun.
Gundy wants to challenge the D, figure out whats difficult for defenses (heard that in his interview).
Bray is first HC to attend one of his (DeVan’s) meetings in DeVan’s coaching career.

All of this sounds simple and obvious, but i like it. The loyalty value seems genuine and consistent across these interviews.

This is going to be an interesting “experiment,” with this many alums in key roles, but it looks like what the team needs in its current context.

  38. Poyer to Dolphins on one year deal….thought he might wind up in SEA or SF, but stats in the east and gets to face his former teammates.

“Poyer, 32, started 16 games and finished with 100 combined tackles, four pass breakups and one sack during the 2023 season. He had his most productive seasons while playing for the Bills. Poyer posted three consecutive seasons (2018-2020) of at least 100 tackles and he was selected as a first-team All-Pro in 2021 and a Pro Bowl selection in 2022.”

Seems line Miami tanked in the last 1/4 of the season or so? Hope he gets a shot at the Super Bowl….

  39. Sounds like BG is playing well and showing improved arm strength and velocity and has a legit chance to win the job over McCoy.

Receivers having a rough time so far with lots of notable drops. D dominating so far (as expected).

They were in last years game pants for the first full pad practice, bodes well for the rumors of a new uni reveal coming up soon, as they typically recycle old game day stuff to use as practice gear until it’s all worn out. There was also a recruit that tweeted that he couldn’t share uni pics.

  40. I have been waiting since my son was 5 years old for the new game. Problem is, this time I’ll have to fight him for XBox time all summer in order to play it.

    • This is just the declaration of support Tinkle and team need to make another magic tournament run. It all starts tonight with a brutal low-tempo matchup against UCLA who, as a testament to the P12’s strength in basketball, managed a 5th place finish, but only has a 15-16 record on the year.

    • I haven’t gone further than the headline and don’t plan to . . . but maybe Barnes was misconstrued, and “believes men’s basketball will take a significant step in 2024” because he “backs Coach Wayne Tinkle” being anywhere but at OSU?

Where are those rose-colored glasses, I keep mispla–oh, here they are, on my face, that old trick.

  41. 1
    2

How can they expect to take a significant step? We know the key players are likely out the door within weeks of the season ending, moving into the MWC for basketball next year will be even more brutal than the horrible stretch in PAC12 play, and as long as Tinkle is still coaching the team they will lack an offensive gameplan.
Barnes has been fairly adept for the last 8 months navigating the PAC12 drama, but he has lost his marbles if he is trying to spin another year of Tinkle as a positive. I expect the season ticket sales to drop for next year, and Tinkle should be on the hot seat. Barnes has a lot on his plate and just doesn’t want to do a coaching search right now. Anybody replacing Tinkle right now would be a big step for next season.

As mentioned above, it would be a bad look to fire Tinkle right now and use state funds to pay off his guarantee. OK then appeal to donors for the funds to buy him out so we can move on and at least hope for an improved program. As it is now, no one can actually enjoy the product on the court because of the goober on the sideline.
Go Beavs and Go Away Tinkle!

  42. 14

If Oregon State is planning to let Wayne finish out his contract, just drop basketball altogether as a sport if they’re not gonna take it seriously. Craig Robinson’s last year, the team went .500 and he was shown the door. If lose today they’ll be 27-68 in the last 3 seasons. That is the worst winning percentage over a 3 year period in Oregon State history. He’s the only coach ever to win 1 game or fewer in conference play on multiple occasions in OSU history. He has 1 season where they finished with a better than .500 record in conference play.

If you are a serious athletic department, you do whatever you have to do to find the money to make a change. He’s destroying what’s left of the program with each day he remains as a HC. This team can’t even make a routine pass at this point. There’s zero interest in the program and the actual good players are gonna leave and this team will be lucky to win 5 games next season. Either find the money or stop wasting everybody’s time and pretending you care about the program being somewhat competitive.

  43. 2
    0

This latest embarrassing loss is exactly the springboard Tinkle’s program needs to propel it to new heights. Wayne is a great coach and an even better person and I’m proud to have him leading these young men on the court and into the next phase of our life.

…sorry, just got carried away practicing my audition for OSU AD.

  44. 3
    1

They should let some GA or something coach for the rest of his contract. It really can’t get much worse. That would generate a little hope by just not having tinkle on the sidelines.

    • 2
      1

OSU and Barnes are impervious to the pleas of real basketball fans when it comes to Tinkle.

They waited for years to see him build up a young team before NIL and he couldn’t stop the transfers from leaving. How in the world will it be better now with NIL and no conference?

      • I suspect they are very aware of the reality, but are not yet ready prepared to toss up the dollars to lose Tinkle and buy a new coach. There are many things out there that may pop up over the coming year that may call for big dollars. Just a guess…..

        • That’s why they just let a ga take over until his contract is up. Nothing to lose. I wouldn’t be surprised if some nobody could do better with this team.

  45. The lack of success in league play is particularly egregious. I don’t expect them to be much better in the WCC, which is no joke. They finish at 159 in the Ken Pom index – they could double the NCAA field and they’d still be out – so don’t expect a CBI invite either.

  46. I don’t know that they will do much better in the WCC either. Four losses coming from Gonzaga and St.Mary’s right off the bat. I don’t think they will be better than San Francisco or Santa Clara. Maybe .500 in league play if they’re lucky. Hey, does that College Insider tournament still exist for mid-majors who finish with a .500 or better record? Barnes is pretty much admitting they don’t want to pay the buy-out. MBB is in a sad state of affairs.

  47. Hopeless: Will he have any players left? He can’t need the money? Why does Lisa Tinkle endure these BB seasons? Barnes is good at saying nothing. Tinkle: “2nd year of rebuild.”

    • I have lost a lot of respect for Barnes with his statement about Tinks and the program. The truth always is the best elixir. He shouldn’t came out and said something to this effect, “do to our current situation with all of the conference realignment, we are in a wait and see situation at this time. Coach Tinkle knows he needs to make significant improvements next year in order to get Beaver basketball back to contend for conference championships and be relevant nationally. We will evaluate at the end of next season as our conference situation will become clearer.”

  48. Keeping Tinkle is all about saving money. There is an uncertain future and spending additional cash to buy out Tinkle and bring in a new coach is not fiscally prudent. Tells me there is no secret plan to join one of the P4 conferences anytime soon.

    • Even if a private donor would give enough for the buyout, the AD probably needs it for other things.

Regionalism will help with costs. But new revenue sources need to be added.

And it won’t be just us. There’s a lot of chatter about PE firms jumping into the market to handle all sorts of expected liabilities and to offset their eventual relegation coats.

We just happen to own a network, which could be more valuable if partnered with someone like Apple in a swap for equity, rather than doing so with PE.

The NBA is talking with Disney about rights. Exclusivity ends in about a month. And it looks like the summer will be the time to negotiate for regional telecast production… or maybe having enough content to make distribution and ad sales a thing again.

        • Assistant Conference Commissioner in charge of basketball relations and being a great guy.

We could have him work with Bill Walton. It would be prime entertainment.

    • Have we EVER had rumors that another team was interested in poaching Tinkle away from OSU in his time here?
If the answer is no, then that should tell us all we need to know.

OSU needs another Nebraska, to come in and hire Tinkle away.

      • Stanford was rumored to interview him around the time of Tres senior year or the next year. So Barnes overreacted and signed him to a multi year extension. Bad move in hindsight and bad move at the time.

  49. 17

Barnes is playing the long game with Tinkle. He is waiting for Tres Tinkle and the Thompson sons to have kids of their own. We’ll have quite a team sometime around 2042, get your tickets now before it’s too late.

  50. I’ve seen high school talent pipelines that pretty much match that assessment. Small schools in Ohio have regular 15-20 year cycles of winning because the same families have lived in the same town for 100 years. The kids don’t move away so their kids all grow up together and you have another run of winning until those kids graduate. It’s always the same families/cousins etc from the same families that won state back in the 60s. They won in the 80s, early 2000s and another state total in the last few years. So weird. It just interesting how much people move around and leave these days, but those small towns have 1-2 legacy athletic families that are always at the center of any successful run for the high school.

No Aiden May this weekend. MC says he’s getting close but man, the longer this stuff drags on the less confident I get. Weather is sunny but in the 40’s so perhaps that still plays a role. Curious to see the Utah pitching. Team is 11-4. Has a slightly better ERA at 3.46, 36 less strikeouts and has issued 26 less walks than the Beavs. Utah offense doesn’t seem good on paper. Batting avg around .230, 89 runs scored. 12 homers on the year. It would seem that we should have the upper hand with our pitching vs their hitting but they only issue 3 walks a game so we’ll have to get it done with the bats and not the free bases.

  52. So what’s the story on new secondary coach Rod Chance? Didn’t coach last year after Colorado in 2022? Seemed to do well at Minnesota the year before, why jump to a sinking ship?

  53. Sounds like offense had their best day so far today. BG continuing to play well and had multiple TD’s. McCoy bounced back and hit a 60 yd TD pass at the end of practice in 1-minute drill. Dom Montiel also continues to make plays and has put up the most consistent numbers with the 3’s.

Martinez getting a lot more looks catching passes out of the backfield both he and Newell had completions of the backfield that went for TDs.

David Wells and Jordan Anderson in the mix to return kicks.

Listening to the spring camp coaching interviews has been very interesting. Coach Tuiaki mentioned that it was Coach Hayward that had been reaching out to his network and those coaches recommend Coach Tui. While there had been a lot of guesses saying Coach Hayward was the hire for DC, he was one of the last ones announced. In reality, he likely was one of the first hires.

  55. Meckler sent to AAA despite a .429 spring batting average.

Larnach likely to start in AAA too

Forrester did get an at bat this week. Singled in his only at bat. Maybe a sign he’s been hitting well on the minor league fields. Pretty late in spring training to get an at bat.

Melton did not do great in his opportunity. Another year in the minors for him

Eisert getting an extended look. Probably will make his debut this year at some point.

Don’t see any other guys making extended appearances in spring training. Chamberlain got a third of an inning, Hjerpe got a couple innings,

    • I saw Caleb Hamilton on TV playing catcher for the Angels. He’s carved out a 9 year professional career. Crazy I don’t think he ever played catcher for the Beavs.

  56. So far Utah pitching has kept the Beavs to 2 hits thru 3 innings. It is tied 2-2 in the 4th. Utah bats have done fairly well. 5 hits and a few walks and Keljo is already out of game after 3 innings.

  57. Hunter came on in relief and threw 24 pitches. Escapes with only allowing 1 run. So far, Utah pitching has proven to be better than the beavs and that’s not a surprise. Their stats were better than the Beavs heading into the game outside of strikeouts. Need Beavs bats to wake up. Unless Hunter settles down, we could go through a fair number of pitchers tonight

If I’m understanding correctly the CFP committee just sent a big FU to the Beavs and Cougs, they are getting less than 1% of the ESPN contract distribution. Even P-5 conferences are getting 1.8 million. They are apparently calling OSU/WSU and UConn independents.

    • 2
      1

      Basically “So sue us.”
We knew it was coming and more will join us shortly. The remaining 8 conferences can’t see the reality of why is coming and are fools to go along anything Sankey proposes.

      • 3
        2

Feels like a shitty day for Beavs sports with CFP bullshit, baseball looking grim against Utah, and the Quacks coming back from 14 down to beat Arizona and make it to the championship game.

        • 3
          2

On the bright side, the more Pac teams that make the NCAA tournament, and the deeper they go…..the more money for OSU/WSU to split.
So hopefully oregon goes in a miracle run and gets to the final 4, and then loses.
          We could use the cash

  59. Down 5-2 bottom of 7. Bad night for the beavs. 2 errors. Given up 11 hits. This was not a good Utah offense yet Beavs pitching making them look very good.

    • They must have good pitching. They came in with a .235 team batting average, but an 11-4 record. Not a good look for the Beavs tonight, but they can still come back and win the series.

      • Their pitching was better in most every category except strike outs. However, I thought our pitching would fair better since their batting stats were pretty bad. Hainline might be breaking out of his slump and now everyone else is slumping. He’s got 2hr and been their only offense. He and Tanner Smith at the 8/9 hole only ones who’ve done anything. 5-4 Utah in top of 9. Do or die now

    • Preseason #1 Wake Forest has lost three straight and four of their last five.

Beavs ranked #1 in Boyd’s World ISR

  60. Beavs beating Utah when the Utes Friday night guy was on the mound and OSU had their mid week starters both throwing is really impressive stuff. Utah’s closer had allowed 3 hits, 4 baserunners and no runs this season until tonight and the Beavs roughed him up. That is a big time win.
Bridger Holmes is an absolute beast in the back end of the pen. He had allowed just an infield single in his last 5 appearances. He should be the closer moving forward. Batters flat out cannot square him out and his control has gotten a lot better. Scary sight.

Got to give Mitch and his staff a ton of credit so far. Beavs are 16-1 and they’ve gotten like 5 1/2 healthy games out of Brady Kasper, Micah McDowell has battled injuries and missed time, Hainline had underachieved most of the season until the last week or so and Aiden May hasn’t pitched in 3 weeks and the team has lost 1 game all season and it was by 1 run against Arkansas who had arguably the best pitcher in college baseball throwing.

    • This is why I think the pressure is really on him more than other defensive coaches. He can really take the defense to a high level if he gets the dline to produce.

    • Colorado should get in also. It’s a bonus to have Arizona not win the Pac12 tournament and 2 extra teams earn a seed. The more those 4 teams win, the more the Pac2 benefit.

      • 1
        2

It’s so awesome that the traitors aren’t getting that money. Hopefully the traitors all make deep tourney runs. Go traitors!

  61. Man, this Beaver baseball team can rake. But best part about this series is how resilient they’ve been in close games. Flood gates opening kind of overshadowed the gritty defensive game it was yesterday…now hitting the cover off the ball out of the gate today. Fun team to watch.

    • Imagine when Brady Kasper is finally healthy. This offense is a machine and they just don’t chase pitches out of the zone for the most part. To shut them down, you have to be on top of your game for 9 innings and that’s asking a lot cause every at-bat is a grind. When Kasper is back, two of Krieg/Macias/Trosky/Hainline will be on the bench. Insane depth.

  62. Damn, I thought the Beavs would have easy cruising after jumping on Utah 9-0. Utah has now scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 4th and still only one out. Segura got rocked. Runners on 2nd and 3rd. Lawson is in relief.

  63. Segura gave up 6 runs in the 4th. He’s been really good this season but rough inning. I have no clue what Dorman is doing waiting until Utah scored 4 runs to get someone seriously warming when it obvious by about the third hitter in the inning that Segura didn’t have it. He’s far too reactive in these situations and it got Utah back in the game

  64. Segura just had all 4 wheels fall off of a 3 inning perfect game into giving up 6 runs in the 4th with still only 1 out. Lawson hopefully can get a couple of outs.

Beavs still up 9-6 so far. Bottom 4th.

  65. Man, beavs piled on 9 runs in 3 innings. Segura was cruising then the wheels came off. Classic Dorman left the pitcher out there too long and Segura got touched up for 6 runs and still responsible for the 2 guys left on base. RD went on a mound visit early on and then proceeded to watch like 4 or 5 batters get base knocks and now it’s a 3 run game with 1 out for the pitching change. Bazzana has 2 hr and a double today

    • Dorman waits for Segura to implode before he even visits the mound and still kept rolling with him. Then he replaces him with a pitcher who has been awful this season and been giving up missiles left and right and then in the 5th he gives up missiles 4 hitters in a row. I’m convinced Dorman just watches the game with his eyes closed. Only explanation for why he sticks with guys who are getting crushed

    • Lawson had no business getting sent out for another inning and promptly gives up a triple and RBI single to make it 10-9. Mitch needs to take more control over the pitching moves. This is getting absurd at this point. Bullpen is much better than it was a year ago but guys who get shelled are getting the ball in big spots. This should be like a 10-4 game right now instead of 10-9 with a pitching coach with a clue

  66. Yet another classic RD pitching decision. Hutchinson has 2 on 1 out and is clearly struggling. RD does mound visits doesn’t make a change, and the Hutch gives up a base knock on the next pitch and it’s a tie game at 10-10. Then RD comes back out to make the change. Lol. He’s got zero feel with what’s happening out there. He’ll often do the opposite too. Guy comes on in relief, lights it up for 3 or 4 consecutive outs then yanks em. It’s starting to appear we have about 4-5 good/reliable pitchers and then after that, it’s a crap shoot to say the least.

  67. Utah is ahead now 13-10 still in the 7th. Horrendous pitching today is about all I can say. Utes are hitting ropes, also a hit batter with I think an 0-2 count didn’t help either.

  68. Beavers got complacent with a big lead and lost a lot of that aggressiveness and just had a full on collapse. Gonna be a brutal loss with a series opening sweep looking like a lock. This Utah offense is very pedestrian, too. One of the last teams in the conference I’d expect to see explode like this. Hard to believe even with some pitching concerns.

    • Yeah, their offense was not good and yet for 2 games they’ve been rock solid vs the Beavs pitching. We don’t even need rockstars in the pen, even average guys should be able to hold onto a 9 run lead. So wildly inconsistent in the bullpen

  69. 9
    14

Pathetic display. PATHETIC!!!!! Pitchers need to be running wind sprints back to Corvallis. Putting up 10 runs should pretty much be lock for a W.

Sorry but if we want to be going anywhere far in the conference or overall this season. These are the kinds of teams we need to be sweeping with relative ease. This easily could have been a series loss without the saving inning in game 1. Seeing major red flags with the inconsistent nature of the team. Similar to last season. Super regional is likely the ceiling for this team.

Go on everyone. Downvote away and ignore insight as usual.

My specific statement was as follows:

“Especially if we aren’t making it to Omaha, I kind of expect as a fan that we, at a minimum win the PAC 12 regular season title for the first time since 2017 nonetheless.
That’s not to poopoo a national championship by any means, but what I guess I mean is that I still value conference championships despite what some people on here feel and honestly I’d rather win the last PAC 12 regular season title and not make it to the supers then lose in the supers with no PAC 12 title flag to hoist at Goss.”

Where in this statement do I imply I think conference championships are better than Omaha? I specifically state that if we aren’t making it to Omaha, I at least expect a conference title.

  70. 2
    1

What a pitching collapse, and the offense died off after the first 3 innings too. The silver lining is maybe having a terrible outing like that now, they’ll learn from it and not repeat it when it matters most. Although, much of that also depends on Dorman. Maybe they’ll keep up the aggression at the plate from now on too, having experienced first hand that no lead is safe.

  71. WBB shipped off to Albany instead of staying home in Portland. 3 seed is pretty high praise, though. Same as defending champ LSU.

  72. 7
    1

As a reminder, every ex-P12 tourney win is worth $1M to the Beavs. If things break the right way, this tournament could bankroll a Tinkle buyout.

    Go Traitors!

  73. Trent Caraway will miss significant time due to being hit by a pitch on his hand the other day. Potentially a month or more. Hate to see it, but infield is an area of strength for us and with Trosky having another good day at the plate, having Hainline at 3rd, trosky at SS isn’t the worst thing in the world. Sucks to have 4 big pieces hurt this early in the season.

  74. 4
    2

    WTF??
I turned off the game when they’re up nine zip and then they freaking lost the game??? So the team got Dorman’d?

  75. Ok, it’s 1 series and so on and so forth. However, here’s how Beavs conference pitching lines up AFTER facing a Utah offense that was below avg heading into the series. Not going to include walks and k’s as the Beavs have only played 3 comf games. Everyone else except UW has played at least 5.

    ERA: 6.58 (9th)
    WHIP: 1.69 (10th)
    K/9: 6.58 (last)

I don’t follow baseball closely, but based on what i see on this site, it seems like Mitch Canham has a “we’ll figure out the details and little things later” attitude, and us trying to play a pro style.

If he waits until later to figure out the details, “later” won’t likely include a championship.

But hey, nothing a little bowling can’t address.

      • Well, being from the Mariner organization I think he’s definitely molded the team in that mindset. It’s all a focus on bat speed and launch angles, etc and that’s what the focus is offensively. While they say they take pitching seriously and use all the cool buzzwords, i get the feeling that they hope the pitching can be OK enough that us scoring 8+ runs a game should be sufficient. I’ve said this plenty of times, but it really appears to be a complete 180 from the Casey model of flawless defense, great pitching and timely hitting/small ball/manufacturing runs. There’s obviously more than 1 way to have a successful season and build a team but I’m a firm believer that post-season success will still favor great defense and great pitching…or at least deeper more reliable pitching staffs. This seems to be reflected in our post-season results so far under MC. Offense is great enough to cover up avg pitching during conference play but once the P12 tourney and post-season starts, it becomes much harder to do so. It’s just the first series and there’s plenty of time to get things ironed out but history has not been on RD’s side to develop arms. I’d say Kmatz is pitching much better this year than last year, but I can’t really point to any other pitcher under RD that’s grown and developed. Lawson and Lattery are still the same dudes now that they were as freshman. Hjerpe was from the prior coaching staff and also has given Driveline credit for helping him develop leading up to his last year with the Beavs.

        • …Casey model of flawless defense…
Beavs currently set at #113 for errors per game (1.1) while WSU is #3 (.5) and CSUN, Liberty, Grand Canyon, etc are .7 or better.
A complete 180 from the Casey model?…………looks that way from where Warren Nolan sits!

          • There could be a correlation there but I think it’s primarily the trend of who we target now. It’s offense first and if they can play even a smidge of defense, even better. I’d say Tanner Smith and Bazzana are clearly the best defensive guys we have and perhaps Macias as a 3rd. Hainline has been solid as well, but after that, it does feel like avg defense elsewhere. Turley has a great arm and good speed but I’m not sure he’s making some of those diving catches or grabs against the wall we’ve been used to with a lot of the outfield guys in the past. Kasper seems similar to Turley and McDowell I think is the weakest link in the outfield primarily due to his arm. Guerra has gotten better at first but he looked like a fish outta water at 1st for the initial 2 – 3 weeks. Not to mention, they’ve tried him at 3rd and left field. It’s nice to have him for flexibility, especially now with Caraway missing significant time, but he’s in the lineup for his bat, not his defense.

I feel this style of ball shares the philosophy of air raid football. It’s fun (who doesn’t like scoring 8+ runs a game and a hitting bunch of dingers), offense first and we hope to put a bunch of runs on the board and pray that the pitching is good enough to hang on. It works great during the season when it’s about winning a series but it’s yet to prove itself in the post-season. And let’s be honest, there couldn’t be a much worse baseball franchise to mold yourself after than the Mariners for post-season success.

          • It’s Indiana winning the B1G in style, then losing to a decent Wake and Dallas Baptist in the regional.

The defense can come around. The situational pitching can be better.

  76. Bray after 6th spring practice:

    1) both a reporter and Bray commented on players tackling well, particularly early in spring (yay!).

    2) need to get a better pass rush out of front four.

    3) O needs to improve on passing game, run game there (unsurprising).

    4) there will be a spring game.

    5) players apparently seem generally excited about the “alumni coaching staff” approach Bray has taken.

    6) Q&A about injuries, but hard to hear all the names but Bray didn’t seem particularly worried.

    https://youtu.be/_LtyFTOIgI0?si=wbt3u4DoLUZmIJAC

    • Enrolling spring quarter or fall? Terry didn’t move to LB after being announced that he would so maybe this will make that move happen now

      • I think Spring, which is why the official visit took place this week.

Daschel said recently in a spring camp article that we will habe 2 new players added to the roster Spring term. This guy must have been one of them, bit not sure who the 2nd is yet.

        • Just seems the weakest position in my point of view so far. Replacing two starters at tackle one is just moving inside to guard which is unfortunate. The backups didn’t look very good in limited time so a big question mark there. The Colorado transfer isn’t even on campus yet. Hopefully coach Devan knows what he’s getting in him because he’s missing valuable reps by not being here yet. Hopefully he can get up to speed fast. Starck has been taking reps at tackle which I think is good. I trust him there more than last years backups. Also I think I heard Moreno is hurt. Not sure if that’s true but was already a weakness before that and the season hasn’t even started. They need to bring in someone else. The offense isn’t going to do much with a couple of guys that can’t protect the QBs.

With all that said I hope they bring in someone and hopefully guys are really ready to take that next step.

          • I do believe Moreno and Valsin are both injured. However, unless something has changed and I’m unaware, none of the injuries we have currently are expected to be long term. Sucks they miss out on these reps but good news that they aren’t major injuries for the year.

          • 1

Last report i saw said both were expected to be out into the begonning of the season. Which isnt encouraging.

A road series win for baseball is usually a good thing but a loss like that really takes the shine off.

Utah is #27 in the RPI after the weekend. Second highest in the PAC12 so those wins could go a long ways if Utah has a good season.

You might not think it but midweek vs Portland is a must win. It would be a bad loss on the resume.

Next conference opponent is UW. Very surprisingly, they took 2 of 3 on the road at Texas. Metrics don’t think much of them but clearly a tougher team than on paper. Have to wonder if May will return this season. If he misses this weekend, that’s a month he’s been out.

    • 7
      2

No. 2 team in the country and have lost 2 games all year and we’re complaining because why? it’s baseball, you’re not going to win them all.

          • 9
            2

I love people writing off blowing a 9 run lead. I think most of the concerns people have are based on what this means in the post-season. Bad pitching and below avg defense doesn’t translate to post-season success. We’re 7th in errors and 6th in fielding % in the P12. I think it’s safe to say that it’s been a hell of a long time since we’ve been in the bottom half of the defensive metrics. Hell, last year we had 39 total errors and we’re already at 20 with just 19 games played. Being #2 and only having 2 losses thru 19 games is amazing, but if they want to make it to Omaha, the defense and pitching will need to get much better.

          • I think we need to come to grips with the approach being taken by Mitch and staff as a departure from Casey’s recipe.
Mitch is clearly deemphasizing defense, and not as concerned about pitchers with great control over velocity.
The approach has been to aggregate a roster of offensive guys who resemble a local beer softball league by the slugging percentages, joined with a pitching staff of guys who are throwing in the high 90s but can’t really throw strikes consistently.
Both of these elements reduce the need for elite defense if you are leaning on big offense and big strikeout numbers, less pressure situations in “blowouts”, and fewer fielding chances with higher strikeout totals by the pitching staff.
A lot of the fielding errors have been divided between Carraway and Hainline. Both newcomers to the program.
A lot of the walks and hbp have been on the veterans of the staff.

Great defense and great pitching was counter to the rest of college baseball at the time. Mitch has evidently decided that chicks dig the long ball and we just need to embrace the homerun/strikeout pageantry of modern baseball.

          • Well said, ohiobeav.
Those elements (high slugging % and 90mph pitchers) do reduce the need for elite defense. However, I think many here realize, that in the post season it is a tall order to ask the bats to make up for free bases given away by e’s, HBP’s and bb’s. Throw in a couple slumping batters and you have a recipe for “two and bbq”.

Seems to me those who poo poo losses when the record is good enough to be ranked #2 are missing the point of concern. It’s not the loss, it’s the WAY in which the game is lost.

          • Hainline was supposed to be an elite fielder, wasn’t he? Something must not be clicking for him personally because both his offense and defense have been drastically worse than last season.

          • Pitching staff is missing the memo on the high strikeouts thus far into the season unfortunately. 7th in k/9 and 6th in strikeouts. WHIP still around 1.4 for the season which is good enough for 3rd. Vs Utah it was 1.69. Hainline’s bat has started to come alive the last week or two. Batting avg at .250 but that’s a big improvement as he was well below .200 thru the first couple of weeks. 9 of the 20 errors are Caraway and Hainline.

Missing May and Jimenez definitely hurts, but considering RD said this was the best and deepest pitching unit he’s had since he’s been here, they’re definitely not looking like it in the early part of the season. Kmatz, May and Holmes seem to be the most reliable. Then we’ve got a few guys that are good for about 3 innings like Segura and Lattery. Really need Hunter (15 innings) and Keljo (12 innings) to find a groove. Both have been disappointing thus far. Hunter has a 6.46 ERA and a WHIP over 1.8. Keljo has an ERA of 5.11 and a WHIP of 1.95. Being 1 of the 2 lefties we have, Keljo was going to play a big role this season. Still plenty of time to figure it out but was expecting both of them to be better than they’ve shown so far.

  78. Down in Arlington I heard from a guy who supposedly talked to May’s dad who said his injury was a nerve issue, which has flared up periodically. I presume it is probably related to his Tommy John surgery. The guy told me that his dad said he would just need a week or two of rest… So take it for what it’s worth.

    Go Beavs!

      • I get the money angle and they definitely weren’t deserving but the same argument can be made for many Bowls and they’d never say no to that.

You should always take the opportunity to get more exposure. I think that’s even more true now.

      • I if it’s the CBI I get it, but the NIT. It’s free basketball. An opportunity to give your young core some more games together. But Tinkle is probably a tourney or bust type of coach. Too proud to accept an invitation to the NIT. Probably was like “We didn’t earn it.” But really just trying to feed his ego that he’s better than an NIT coach.

        • It’s interesting, I’ve noticed the power conferences quit accepting CBI bids a few years back. For a while, it was used as a springboard for young teams to get better. It didn’t help the Beavs, but Oregon and VCU won the CBI and went to the NCAA’s soon after. I wonder if the NCAA quietly put the kibosh on it. I know Craig Robinson was a big advocate, but I think he had some connection to the Gazelle Group.

      • Avoiding another certain 20 loss season is the only factor in my opinion. Tinkle wouldn’t be able to make good use of the extra practice time anyway. Seems like any postseason opportunity would be welcomed by competitive athletes, but we also know that being coached by Tinkle is a grind for guys to endure so maybe the team voted to not do it. If that is the case, it is more evidence that Tinkle has lost the program and the locker room.

        • Yeah I think you kind of nailed it. I can only imagine these kids are and have been passionate about basketball most of their lives. If they are saying no to playing MORE basketball that’s a problem. If Tinkle is saying no for them. Also a problem. Either way, it’s a problem. Altman always plays in the NIT because he is a GOOD coach and can take any roster, injuries and all, and turn them into winners by the end of the season. He understands that free basketball is good in any form.

          • Daschel had a small piece in The Oregonian and he makes it sound like they were caught off guard by the other Pac-12 NIT declines and players had already left Corvallis with the semester ending. I think Daschel is a bit of a Tinkle apologist so I take it with a grain of salt. I’m sticking with the avoiding another 20-loss season theory!

  79. Gonna be a long day of bullpen arms for the Beavs. Second inning and Mejia is already at 42 pitches. 1 out with 2 on. Tied game at 1-1

  80. Weber can’t handle foul popup, then a wp gets a runner home for Pilots.
This after Parker mentions that Weber has allowed 6 stolen bases out of 6 chances.
Beavs up 3-2; in 20 pitches Reynolds has tossed 1 wp and given up 2 bb.

  81. Reynolds continues his stellar bullpen appearances. 2 wild pitches. Hit batter. 3 walks. 0 k. Somehow only allowed 1 run. Threw 40 pitches in 1.3 innings. Did manage to get his ERA to under 9.0. Mundt on here in the 5th. Would be awesome to get his pitch count up a but tonight. Been kept on a pretty tight leash and he’s been solid. He could he huge this season if he can get stamina and stay healthy.

As baseball fans we have literally turned into Duck fans and it kills me. Y’all are mad at a 18-2 record? We were 12-8 through 20 games last year. Obviously record doesn’t capture everything but to see people calling this program/team bad is ridiculous. It’s the same shit the duck fans did after Chip left, I can’t stand it.

    • 7
      1

Relax tango. No one but studentbeaver has called them bad and he is just a duck troll anyway.
Of course 18-2 is great but the concerns are valid with some pitching issues and high amount of errors at this point.
We still have a long conferred schedule ahead and a lot of wins in front of this team but it is silly to not be a bit concerned about the amount of walks, wild pitches, hit batters and errors we I’ve seen in 20 games. Postseason is the jewel and the offense will need 6-7 guys hitting the cover off the ball at the same time in June if they get to Omaha because this staff will have some trouble against better opposition.

It is easy to expect at least 40 wins just due to the offensive firepower where they simply overwhelm teams, it will be the remaining 25-30 games where the issues become a problem. Can they win half of those remaining 25-30 games where the opponent also has a potent offense and good to great pitching.
My guess is Mitch has decided to roll the dice that they can and will win at least 18-20 of those
Matchups and it will be enough to win a conference title and a national title. This team could win 55-60 games if the offense just mashes all year but the problem will come down to a 3 game stretch in super regionals or Omaha where the bats can’t go cold all at once. That is the concern, not saying this team is bad. Dorman may be bad though…

      • I understand the concerns with this years team. That being said, many people were saying this years team didn’t deserve their ranking. What have they done to show that? What sunk us last year? It wasn’t pitching. The game has changed a ton. LSU’s offense was the reason they beat us last year. Mitch having the foresight, invested in our offense and it’s really paying off. People can say what they want but the proof is in the wins and we are winning games

  83. 5
    1

I think what you’re seeing in the remarks are fans that desperately want to see our beloved Beavs be champions. Pat Casey brought our team to national contender level. I think us being disappointed with aspects of our team means we hope and to some degree expect the Beavs to win the big show. We’ve done it before. Don’t take our downer quips as us not loving our baseball team. It’s so great that the Beavs are in the conversation of a national contender as our other teams are rarely or never in that conversation. Rather, take it as we are contenders and it’s so much fun to be in a position to be a bit critical of our team and hope/expect a national championship on most years. WE have reason to want greatness and lamenting less just means we have a great program. We love our baseball team and our small, under funded school has proven we can take it all!

This is exactly what I was talking about. This is the same mentality that duck fans have. It’s the Natty or nothing! Which is ridiculous, considering what it takes to win the whole thing. Spoiler: it takes some luck to win that thing. The key is putting yourself in a position to win it in the first place. Which Mitch has done a great job. A lot of people were saying that after Casey left we wouldn’t even compete. Hell even with Casey we had warts! I am not saying don’t criticize the team, because yes there are things to criticize. I am saying do it while maintaining respect for what OSU built.

What you see with successful programs is high expectations because you know what your team is composed of compared to everyone else. I know football is a bit different than baseball, but look at the really successful teams there like Ohio State, Alabama, etc. The expectation is, at a minimum, to win the conference and a New Years 6 on any given year, and even then, that is considered to be a let down by many, but it is that way because fans know the team and know they should really be a level above everyone else, and they should given their talent, history, etc.

I don’t expect a natty every year or every other year in a sport like baseball, especially with how much variable and luck comes into such a sport, but the minimum expectation for a program of this caliber should be winning the conference regular season title, (which generally requires you to be sweeping mediocre teams like Utah and Washington), and be making a super regional.

          3

I mean, this just illustrates the duck (ignorant) fan mentality. It’s clear that you don’t know much about baseball if you are comparing it to football. A conference title is the measure of success, now? Did you realize that LSU didn’t win their conference last year and won the championship. Did you realize they didn’t win the conference title in two out of three of their last championships? Did you realize they haven’t won their conference since 2017? At least understand your own argument before making stuff up to cope.

Washington is 6-8 overall and last in the conference right now. We’re at home. Anything less than a sweep of this weekend series should be considered a disappointment.

  85. UW’s athletic director, who just started the job back in October, has accepted the Nebraska AD job now.
Gotta wonder if they come back to Barnes again? Didn’t he go so far as to interview with them last time around?

  86. Cost of living in Seattle isn’t cheap. .

Any news on the Beaver portal front? Stanford is losing its starting line-up. And even if you are miserable, how do you leave behind a degree from Stanford? With that weather, that campus, those connections that can set you up for life?

    • I wouldn’t hold your breath on xfer portal for men’s basketball. Hasn’t been a source of strength for WT by any means. He’s gonna have to feast on that or the CC level since I’m not aware of any high school recruits that he’s got going. To his credit, nobody has left yet. However, I can only imagine theres only a couple of players that any school would be wanting from this roster.

      • I was referring to the annual exodus of players from the team. Its usually pretty busy. But then again, there were a couple of “solid” players who changed their mind after vowing to be back in recent years.

  87. WBB
Hard to argue with this from an AP writer on the start of the women’s version of March Madness:
Best Potential Game: Oregon State vs Notre Dame in the Sweet 16. Two really good defensive teams that have dynamic guards. The Beavers are led by Talia von Oelhoffen while the Irish have Hidalgo. First team to 50 wins.

    • Odd that 3 of our 23/24 athletic teams have a post season matchup with Notre Dame, with M.Soccer, Football and now WBB meeting(ok, WBB isnt a given just yet, but a likely outcome.

Would like to see OSU come out on top one of these times.

  88. Best comment I’ve seen online, the AD transfer portal is open right now!

A&M AD leaves for Ohio St, Nebraska AD leaves for A&M, UW AD leaves Tulane and then transfers again to Nebraska.

Barnes listed as a possible UW hire. I’d say the chances are fairly low even with Barnes history with UW and being a NW native. Being burned thrice in the last year will push them toward an alumni.

  89. I stand corrected on Valsin. Dam Podcast last night mentioned Valsin will be out and it doesn’t seem like he’ll play at all this year. To the point that they mentioned they could see them wanting to get another wr before the season. Otherwise, Johnson and Clemens are apparently short-term and Johnson even had his boot removed over the weekend.

    • Correct. Mitch has said he will be on a pitch count.

They are treating him with kid gloves.

The Huskies can pitch and they play defense. But their offense is terrible.

I also expect a sweep. It’s at home. And if you want to be a national seed and host regionals/supers? These are the series you need to sweep.

That said the Huskies did take 2 of 3 at Texas last weekend. A sweep won’t be easy. Even if they don’t sweep? It’s not the end of the world. Just win every series at least. That gets you 20.wins

      Go Beavs

The payout is about $2m per game played. That money is lumped together and paid out over six years. So if all four make it to the Sweet 16 and promptly lose, That’s $24m, or $4m per year, plus whatever the rolling tally is for the previous five seasons.

The Pac Conference won’t be earning any units for at least one year, likely two. If we join another conference, that conference then gets whatever is still rolling.

This is why the SEC has about four NIT teams in the field. That’s an extra $8m they wouldn’t want to let other conferences get. And if they get a ridiculous seed, they end up maybe winning a game.

Several better teams were left out, compared to some of these “power” conference offerings.

  91. Hope Beers is back to normal, the cold shooting doesn’t strike, and Beavers cruise today…

Article regarding their loyalty and commitment in times of NIL:

  92. SMU is trying to poach our new Juco TE with NIL. If it comes down to money, I don’t like our chances anymore.
    We ain’t done yet…

    • If teams are spending NIL money on a juco TE to pry away from a school without a conference next year, they are not very bright

      • It may be because it’s free money from a collective and not the school’s.

A 6’7″ TE who has played out wide and appears to have pretty good hands and body control is likely attractive to a collective, even if he is a project .

I suspect most collectives are reactive and free spending rather than strategic with priorities and spending discipline, particularly with NIL in its early stages with so many unknowns.
I would think Nike/Phil Knight machine is more strategic than most, even though UO says it can’t control what the collective does.

  93. Baseball with a very winnable series at home. UW is coming off a very scrappy series win at Texas which should have them confident coming in. Beavs can take all that out with a convincing Friday night win. PAC12 is weak so the expectation is to win every series. Sweeps are a nice extra. Not sure if pitching will show a big improvement in terms of their warts but I do expect the defense to step up.

In terms of RPI, home losses to bad teams are extra bad.

Having May back is a big boost. If he can fill 4-5 innings, that would be great. That’s innings that the end of the bullpen doesn’t have to fill. With no mid week game next week, Beavs stronger bullpen arms can come in for longer outings.

Caraway out is a setback but the hitting depth is making sure there is no dropoff. Haven’t run the numbers but the 9 hole hitter produces because of Bazzana. So any struggling guys should be moved there. Turley might benefit from a few games there.

Bazzana is on a season long heater. Really showing that a 2B can be worth a #1 pick.

  94. Wow I’m not banned. Angry is lying about me posting. Haven’t tried in months. He also edits peoples posts so have fun with that.

Pitching is rough. Bats are amazing. Mitch is still a good coach. Go lady beavs! Angry watches more documentaries on soap than beaver games. Probably too busy worrying about the Colorado weather to tune in.

  95. Paurova with 3 3’s and a steal, among other good things. We’ve seen her have this kind of game at least once this season. She and Beers lead scoring, Beavs ahead in RB’s too. Up 13 with 3 to go in the half.

  96. Boregonian reporting Beers left in the 3rd quarter with an ankle injury and did not return.

Hopefully just precautionary since they were up double digits

  97. Whew. Beavs win 3-1. Only 3 hits by the beavs. One of their better pitching performances as well only giving up 5 hits and 3 walks to UW. Holmes comes in and gets the last 6 outs. He’s definitely the best bullpen guy followed by Mundt.

  98. Good win, pitching was much better. As I thought with no upcoming mid week, bullpen guys were asked to go longer. Guys were hitting the ball hard vs UW but just right at them. McDowell hit a 100+ exit velo line drive right to the SS who was shifted behind second which turned into an easy DP.

Wonder if May was pulled early because next week’s series starts on Thursday.

Thinking today will go Kmatz, Hutcheson and Mundt. Need a long outing from Kmatz.

  99. Arizona adds to the Tinkle buyout find with another NCAA win. PAC still undefeated at 6-0 so far. Waiting for Oregon, Colorado and WSU to all get to sweet 16 would but $9mil into OSU future budgets and should be an easy sell to jettison Tinks back to Montana.

  100. 10-0 good guys heading to 2nd inning.
Bazanna lead off homer, Turley grand slam, Macias 3 run double. 7 hits out of 14 batters in the first inning.

Now we see if they learned anything from last Sunday at Utah with a big lead.

  101. Beavs offense on pace to break the 2018 team record for total runs. Kind of expect them to bludgeon a team once a series like today and many of the mid week games. Doesn’t seem like mid week starters stand a chance vs this lineup.

    • And this is all happening without Kasper and Carraway in the line-up. Pretty impressive roster of hitters for sure. Hopefully Mitch can identify the guys who are hot as postseason hits, rather than leaning on seniority etc.

      • Not only this year benefits but I’ve said it shows that next year will have a solid lineup

Nice to see Macias stepping up. He was the top high school player out of Colorado. Looks like things are clicking in year 2.

Its funny, I know there has been a lot of grumbling about Canham – I imagine if the team gets to Omaha, we’ll have to start worrying about keeping him here.

    • 3
      1

I’m still not sure if this is an Omaha team. Pitching is still a concern in my book. That said, MC has done a great job. Reloaded 2 times with MLB talent. Has lost some great HS pitchers to the draft that probably would have put us in Omaha. Getting May in portal was smart.

      • 1
        1

Pitching will always be a question mark this year no matter what happens. The early season issues were so prevalent throughout the staff that it’s something that can show up at anytime.

    • Right, “Canham isn’t Casey, we will take a step back as a program”. I was happy when we got Canham and still am. People can hate on the M’s but the org is great other than being cheap paying Free Agents.

  103. Something to think about as the WBB game is about 15 minutes away, from Eggers:
“The Beavers must keep opposing defenses honest by hitting some shots from the perimeter to open up things on the inside. Paurova and Timea Gardiner are able and willing to take those shots. Several others — von Oelhoffen included — seem reluctant. That can’t happen for this team to fulfill its ultimate goal.”

    • For TVO, how much of that early reticence is her getting the others involved, so they don’t hesitate? Taking a dribble-drive off a fake from the top of the arc opens up the corners against a zone.

      • TVO doesn’t have to score, she’s a smart field general; sees the court and, as you indicate, gets others involved. Still, I sure appreciated her shot to end the slugfest vs UCLA!

  104. My god. Bazzana with another lead-off home run. 4 straight games with a lead-off Homer and 5 straight games with a dinger. Wow

  105. WBB has completely stagnated on offense, luckily Nebraska hasn’t been much better. Good gals 35-29 heading into the 4th. Beers with four fouls on some pretty suspect calls. Refs just don’t seem to get that she’s stronger than everyone else on the court.

  106. Who said TVO doesn’t need to score?……..leads Beavs with 14 with 7 minutes to go, FOUR THREE POINTERS
Good Gals up 44-29 after a dull 3rd qtr

    • Yeah, they’re pretty streaky. They play some team that is hot shooting the ball and they’ll get buried. I think next year should be their year. I don’t see anybody beating South Carolina.

      • While I agree with South Carolina, I watched Nebraska in the B1G Tourney, and they were a pretty hot shooting team.

The Beavs’ D was simply stifling them. They looked nothing like they did this season.

        • Really? I guess I missed that. I heard they were projected to finish 10th in the conference this year and obviously blew that away. They have some very good young talent and hopefully have another strong freshmen class coming in next year. Rueck has done a great job recruiting.

    • Well, how ’bout that……..Beavs win 10-zip on 11 hits.
Segura/Mundt combined for: ONE bb, ZERO hbp, ZERO wp……….that’ll do, two in a row with similar pitching jobs!
Competition steps up next Thursday vs SC…..at anteater park, if ya can believe the OSU Baseball page.

SC set to livestream that series.

      • Yes, pitching was great this series. UW bats were very bad leading up to this series so it’s good to see the Beavs dominant on the mound. I will say, they did keep most of the pitching to be the top 6 guys. Holmes went 2 innings on Friday….his longest stint i think. Segura and Mundt today, kmatz and Hunter on Saturday. No Lattery, Lawson, Reynolds or Mejia.

  107. Sucks, but confirmed that Langi from Houston won’t be joining the team as he won’t be able to get academically eligible in time to transfer this season.

  108. Does anyone know how much the PAC 2 will get from each game the PAC 12 women play in NCCA national championship tournament? It could add up to a good amount since 7 women’s teams are playing in it. So far OSU and Colorado have won 2 games and will play again next weekend in the Sweet 16 so each are guaranteed 3 games credit and hopefully more. Arizona won their first 2 games (including play in) and lost in round 2 so ended with 3 games credit. Utah, Standford, UCLA and USC won their first games and will play round 2 games with other teams either later today or tomorrow, so each have guaranteed 2 games credit and hopefully more. That gives 17 guaranteed games and probably more from some of them.
It has been posted on AngryBeavs that PAC 2 will get to split $2 million per game played in the men’s tournament. Colorado is out after 3 games played including the play in game. Washington State and Oregon are out after 2 games played. Arizona won their first 2 games and will play again next weekend in the Sweet 16 so are guaranteed 3 games credit and hopefully more. That gives the PAC 2 $20 million for the men’s to split and maybe more. Go Wildcats. Of course, that is spread over the next 6 years and if we get into a league after 2 seasons years 3 through 6 will be split with the other teams in that league.
That leads to the next question how much is the rowing wave for each of the next 5 years that was earned in the 5 previous tournaments?

        • Its all about Dawn Staley and Kim Mulkey for ESPN though. CLickbait stories and lazy reporting allows for the next stage of SEC drama as ther programming of choice for ESPN/SEC. Caitlan CLark was a good story last year, but they have attempted to make her a better story than Pete Maravich so the typical over exposure of a great athlete becomes a disliked athlete through no fault of her own, other than she is a pretty bad whiner.
I predict OSU can get to the Elite 8 and face South Carolina, but Beers will be in foul trouble instantly and refs will not call anything close to a fair game. The plan will be to get Iowa(Clark), South Carolina and probably Stanford(Brink) into the final 4. The 4th team is an afterthought because they have already shown the hand of which teams will be the focus for their ratings hopes. LSU will have a showdown with Iowa, and probably have a fight by 2nd quarter…just because Mulkey needs a reason for another press conference.

Some of the girls games are compelling, but I don’t need a bunch of girls with eyelash extensions me mugging after hitting a lay-up and flexing like they are LeBronda James or something. At least Rueck has a roster with class and dignity, who will play aggressively without being ridiculously clownish and acting like gangsters or something silly like that.

          • 1
            1

“At least Rueck has a roster with class and dignity…” Yup. Very likable AND respectable.

I agree they can get to 8.

They should be a better team next year. Hunter will be better from this year’s experience and most of the impact players will be back. I do think they need to improve on shooting and not be so streaky.

          • There’s a ball, and the goal is to put it through the hoop, preferably your own hoop.

The rest of what you’re talking about it just your bias.

I also would never date a high-maintenance woman. But I don’t project that onto a game.

If you play into the distractions, you have already lost.

          • One just needs to ignore the, “Why’d you do that?” foul she committed on the first defensive set of the game to create one.

        • Is it really? So far it’s been pretty predictable. Pick the higher seed and you’re bracket isn’t busted

So far. Seems to be how it goes every year.

    • If the Beavs get into a league is 2 or 3 seasons won’t the Pac12 assets still be controlled by the Beavs and Wazzu? I see it as joining another company and you decide which assets stay separate and which ones merge into the new company. Unless it’s inviting teams into the Pac whatever it would be then I could see them sharing the Pac assets with teams that join.

Can we just be happy we get some part of 20 mil and enjoy it????

      • NCAA units can only be distributed to conferences, and the rolling total goes to whatever conference we join or merge. If we went to two different conferences, it would split 50-50 to each conference.

I’m thinking some of that revenue will go to pay the MWC for scheduling football.

      • It all just adds to the war chest that other conferences will consider when they look at bringing P2 into the fold. We need every bit of ammo we can get to make that happen; I can’t see leaving some pieces out of the deal being a rational path forward.

  109. A great week for Beavs baseball. It showed how good this team can be. It also showed how weak the PAC12 is this year too.

I’ve had the pitching under a microscope and forget to check how everyone else is doing. I took the blinders off this weekend.

Would you believe the Beavs lead the PAC12 in WHIP? Because they do. Overall and in conference play so far. #24 in the nation too. Also lead in ERA and walks allowed in conference play. Might be looking at the best staff in the conference. I wouldn’t say the WHIP is a great number to be at but relative to everyone else, it’s very good. There is a big gap between the top 10 and the rest.

Beavs obviously lead in hitting by far. So the top offense and pitching staff in the conference right now.

One thing that will continue to hurt the Beavs is the PAC12 and it can’t be fixed. It does not look like there will be any “good” losses since every other team’s RPI stinks.

    • Washington took 2-3 from #14 Texas, and stole a game against Stanford. So hopefully Texas stays in the top 25, should look good for the optics.

      • Oregon State is a national brand in baseball and if they take care of business (win all weekend series, and no bad midweek losses) they will be a top 8 seed regardless. Now the schedule/conference isn’t tough enough to overcome couple bad weekends.

  110. Women’s team to face Notre Dame in Sweet 16 due to the execs at ESPN wanting Notre Dame to beat the Beavs in every sport this year. Why? Illuminati

    • Not quite every program fits the writer’s diatribe. Did he forget Utah State got stomped by a team that’s on coach number 2 after 44 years?

  111. West Virginia getting screwed by the refs hard. Gotta have the all time points gal in the sweet 16 by any means necessary.

    • Yeah that kid is annoying, and the deferential treatment by the refs is gross. At one point you can see her yell ‘shut your fucking mouth’ the camera is so zoomed in you can’t see who she is yelling at but I don’t think there were any players on that side of the court, just the official. Or maybe it was directed at the crowd? Either way I was pulling for a fat L for those ropes. WV made them work anyway. Brink is similar. Maybe because Juju is a freshman but I can’t think of a time I’ve seen her act like that.

Women leave for Albany tomorrow am, band needs traveling with the team. Should be well acclimated by Friday. Still find it weird they send UConn to Portland and beavs to Albany.

What’s the scoop on ND, tried to watch their game today but was too busy and didn’t record it. Highlights made it look like they want to run.

Anyhoo still proud of this team, think they have the talent to play with a lot of teams, but still not physical enough to hang with the en vogue bully ball of south Carolina.

      • Depends upon the referees’ directions; I’m that conspiratorial. Colorado’s first season of bully ball, they whomped Stanford. Somewhere there is a Tara V newspaper reference postgame, saying she guessed basketball had changed. Somewhere, too, I suspect she caused a conversation about it because the refereeing has somewhat changed.

        • 2
          1

It’s not like Stanford doesn’t play bully ball.

It’s simply the “let them play” mentality, being subjectively enforced at times, because the direction to the refs about how much to let them play just wasn’t clear. Two things might have led to this. We have always had issues with refs in this conference, and the conference itself is a little distracted.

Regardless, running that gauntlet and keeping one’s poise is the hallmark of championship play. Kim Mulkey is Exhibit A in what not to do and how not to act, because she’s a massive distraction for her team. And she’s proven she won’t support any of them in the future. It’s all about her.

Win or lose, just keep the distractions out. A team can only do what they do best, when they’re focused on that task.

Ftr, the Pac was derided for years for the refs calling totally clean games, because it made teams soft. Come Tourney time, the game got a little rougher, and only the teams with the firepower to overcome that could gain any traction in the post-season. So having played varying degrees of bully ball this season isn’t an unwelcome thing for people who understand this team is young and still plays hard toward the team goal.

          • Stanford absolutely plays bullyball. They are more subtle. And to the refereeing point: Brink’s game doesn’t vary that much but fouls called go from zero to out.

      • “Arrived” unfortunately means the worst aspects of men’s sports now apply to women’s to make them “compelling viewing.” Mulkey rants 10 feet in bounds in garish “look at me” outfits, “all star” calls for particular individuals, me mugging, fights…they’re denigrating the game quality for the sake if viewing and advertising $$$…

        • Spot on!
Related(?) thought: I’ll not be surprised to see Rueck take a righteous T Friday. Only so many times he can watch Beers get called unfairly.

          • Its a shame. Basketball is a great game that should rely on skills and finesse and even grace. Imagine consistently enforcing carrying, traveling and physical contact fouls and forcing players to rely on deft passing, dribbling, shooting, and maybe even actual drawn up plays…

  112. Beavs baseball will be at Irvine this weekend because USC baseball has to play their home games at UC Irvine’s park this season.

Its nuts how many good basketball coaches have made their way through Pulman since Ralph Miller retired, Kelvin Sampson, Dick Bennett, Tony Bennett and Kyle Smith – three of the four in the tourney this year alone. And how many coaches in that time have had a winning record in their time in Corvallis? None. Only Richie McKay did well enough to land another HC gig (New Mexico) – but it was the only place he’s coached where he never had a winning record.

Do what does Pullman do, that OSU doesn’t?

    • Better football results too…entertaining offenses, decent bowl games….Walden, Erickson, Mike Price, Bill Doba and Leach all had them competitive, and everyone but nomad Erickson got to at least the Holiday Bowl, and that used to be a decent bowl game. Price got to two Rose bowls.

      • i’d argue it comes down to “perceived fit” – who knows maybe we can get a second crack at Eric Musselman in a year or two, but the school does seem to seek out “family men” (not that Muss doesn’t have a family – but he’s brasher than any coach OSU has ever had) over ability to win. With the basketball facility and the recruiting – Craig Robinson left the program better than he found it. Not sure you can say the same about Tinkle. Saying its been stagnant – even with the Elite Eight fluke run – is about the highest you can go.

        • I’m eyeing Shaka Smart.

But then, so is everyone else.

He isn’t (at least he shouldn’t be) going anywhere until after next season, though… unless they win it this year.

  114. Interesting they have Colorado ahead of OSU. Haven’t the ladies beaten Colorado three times this year? Colorado going up against a higher seed in Iowa…and Colorado ahead??? Funny!

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/oregon-state-washington-state-make-it-financially-official-with-departing-pac-12-counterparts/ar-BB1kwOhz

    The meat of the story:
“To make up for the fact that they are leaving, each of the schools that have left will have $5M withheld during the 2024 fiscal year.
Other details of the deal include a $1.5M “supplemental contribution” from each departing school to help OSU and WSU transition and, of course, none of the schools that are leaving will be entitled to any revenue generated by the Pac-12 after this year.
This isn’t a television sitcom. There won’t be any residuals or reruns.”

So not only did we tell them to get lost on the conference assets fire sale idea. We also extracted a modest exit fee from each, despite that being not really defined in the bylaws, beyond vague references to penalties.

    It’s another $65m.

    • There’s still no discussion about future potential liabilities.
For instance, what if one of the lawsuits the conference was pulled into prior to those teams leaving ends up costing the conference several million? Does that come out of this $65M, or is there a provision that requires the former teams to also pay their share as if they were still in the conference?

      • I don’t think anyone knows what to expect. The one lawsuit that most directly affects the conference is the one specifically against USC, first. The plaintiffs are trying to tie it to the conference and the NCAA, which may not work, since it’s the NLRB, and they don’t have jurisdiction over public institutions.

But there are other liabilities incoming from other directions, as well. So we don’t even know if the different court districts will come to similar conclusions on similar cases.

  116. Iowa could easily have problems w Sharrod and it had better keep a couple of CO’s 3-pointers in check. Iowa is so full of itself it might implode vs Colorado.

  117. Pitching was great this weekend. Will be interesting to see if the trend can continue. A few things to note though from the UW matchup. First, their offense was not good coming into the series. Great series win on the road vs Texas for sure, but their offense isn’t good. Secondly, we only used 7 or 8 pitchers all 3 games if I’m not mistaken. Sat was Kmatz/Hunter, Sun was Segura/Mundt and Fri we saw May, Holmes and Keljo. I think Oakes too or maybe that was the midweek game? Anyway, we knew the top 5 guys have been solid, it was essentially anyone outside that top 5 that had been very shaky and not super reliable. What we need to see is that mid-group to become reliable. Lawson, Lattery, Hutchinson, Mejia. If May hadn’t been on a strict pitch count, he likely would’ve went 2 more innings and we might have only seen 2 pitchers that day as well. Was great to see Keljo put several good innings together and nice to see Holmes go a full 2. I’m curious to see if Hunter becomes the midweek starter or if his role is now the 1st up for long relief. With Segura seemingly taking the 3rd rotation spot, it’s changed Hunter’s role.

Was super impressed with how the hitting manhandled UW in days 2 and 3. Their staff was pretty solid leading into that series and yet they ran into a buzz saw. With how good this offense is, we don’t need the pitching to be lights out, we really need guys 6-10 to become more reliable and limit the free bases and hit batters.

  118. 13

Canzano is saying the Pac2 are close to finalizing a TV deal with the CW network for all 13 home games in 2024(Beavs have 7, WSU has 6)
Deal is designed to maximize exposure rather than revenue. Would put every Reser stadium game on over the air antenna nationwide. That’s a win for the fans

  119. Per GT:
“The transfer portal opened just over a week ago, and Oregon State men’s basketball is starting to be impacted.

According to reports, two Beaver guards, Christian Wright and Justin Rochelin, have entered the transfer portal. Wright confirmed the news on Instagram.

“Thankful for my time with my brothers. Family forever,” Wright said on his Instagram.

Wright, a junior, averaged 18.4 minutes a night, scoring 3.4 points per game. He played his freshman year at Georgia before transferring to Oregon State before the 2022-23 season.

Rochelin, a redshirt sophomore, played 10 minutes a night, averaging 2.1 points per game. He attended Arizona State as a freshman, where he redshirted, before also transferring to Oregon State prior to the 2022-23 season.

The two transfers leave Oregon State currently with four open scholarship spots for next season. The Beavers have reportedly been in contact with numerous transfer recruits thus far.

        • He has the team at a level of play that my son, who is indifferent to anything not connected to his computer, would probably enjoy the scholarship he’s giving away.

And it’s not like he’s LaVonda.

          So… sure.

        • Tinkle sseems like a great dude and if you don’t care about actually growing as a marketable player and having on-court success, then he absolutely would be someone to play for.

  120. At this point – the school is the selling point. Tinkle probably won’t be around in four years, you can’t use “playing in the Pac-12 against UCLA and Arizona” as a draw. Decent facilities. Not a place to come if you have NBA aspirations or a good NIL deal.

  121. WBB going to have it tough Friday…ND will likely have a home court feel with their fanbase. Looking forward to seeing how the Beavers respond. Beers will probably get in foul trouble and see fewer minutes, others will have to step up. I haven’t seen ND play, but their PG must be quick if she’s that productive at 5’6″. Beaver D should test her….

    • From what I’ve seen they like to score in transition, have two or three very active players that score most of their points, but due to injuries don’t have a deep bench.

One of their guards causes more turnovers per game then the entire beavs squad so ball security and food passing will be important. Thankfully beavs have been better this year re: unforced turnovers.

I feel optimistic about the game honestly, the Beavs are deep and have lots of ways to mix players to adapt to an opponents strengths and attacked their weaknesses.

Beavs landed last night at 10ish so they’ll be well acclimated by game time. My kid took the train to NYC this morning doubt the players are getting that kind of free time and I’m sure there is plenty of practice but hopefully they get some free time to enjoy the experience and stay loose

    • Othani falls under the category “too big to fail” as far as MLB execs are concerned. I’d guess there is pretty extensive back door communication between the Dodgers org and MLB offices to try and keep or damage to a minimum as the distraction of real games is upon us. Short attention span will help Othani/Dodgers/MLB and it will be forgotten by May 1.

  122. Per Clatskanie Tigers, yesterday: Beavs baseball will be at Irvine this weekend because USC baseball has to play their home games at UC Irvine’s park this season.
Yup, SC plays at LMU and Irvine Park as well as Anteater Ballpark while construction goes on at Dedeaux Field. The games this week will be streamed by USC.
    https://pac-12.com/live/usc

If you happen to be in the area, there is no admission charge for the games at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark.

  123. Looks like NIL will affect college disciplinary processes….I was not aware of this Shannon case.

“The value of NIL and a prospective pro career helped explain why Lawless ruled Shannon did not get adequate due process, according to Amar, who said, “It’s always been the case that the more you have at stake, the more process government has to give you before it takes that away.”

(Due process can be enforced constitutionally at private schools, Amar noted.)”

So will OSU develop a range of disciplinary processes for those student-athletes with no NIL deal to those with highly compensated NIL deals? Or increase due process for all?

  124. “1. Notre Dame’s injuries will finally catch up with the Irish

    (2) Notre Dame vs. (3) Oregon State | 2:30 p.m. | ESPN

You have to be impressed with the second-seeded Irish, who lost point guard Olivia Miles to a season-ending injury last year. Everyone knew she wouldn’t be ready to go at the beginning of the season and a freshman, Hannah Hidalgo, would have to step in. But could anyone have anticipated Hidalgo would play like a first-team All-American?

But that’s hardly been the only injury issue for Notre Dame. Guard Cass Prosper has missed most of the season, not playing since November, and the Irish lost forward Kylee Watson to a torn ACL during the ACC tournament. At some point, those injuries catch up with the Irish ? and we’re thinking it happens in the Sweet 16, vs. Oregon State. ”

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaw/2024/03/28/womens-sweet-16-bold-predictions-friday-games/73123770007/

As OrangeJulius said above “…due to injuries don’t have a deep bench.

Thankfully the Beavs are deep and have lots of ways to mix players to adapt to an opponents strengths and attack their weaknesses.”

    • If we can somehow avoid the shooting deep freeze that usually happens each game for 5-6 minutes, we really should take it

    • Also from USA Today (Schnell):
…according to the numbers, (Beavs) are the second-best defensive team left in the tournament, behind only South Carolina.

Beavs remain 3.5 pt dogs to ND, per Bet MGM

  125. Injuries to the baseball team really piling up when it comes to position players. McDowell scratched tonight and no Kasper still and Caraway out a while longer. Team has a lot of depth but it’s definitely impacting the offense tonight, especially with guys like Krieg slumping right now. Thankfully, May is back and looks every bit the part of the ace.

  126. USC pitcher looking good. Only given up 3 hits to the Beavs offense. May been good outside of a solo home run. Still a few innings gs to work with but USC pitcher has been cruising. Gotta make him throw more pitches and get to the bullpen.

  127. USC pulling out all the stops lol. Made Keljo switch his glove. In fact USC supplied the glove, which makes it even more interesting.

  128. The stream produced by SC is so, so much better than what we see from Goss. Wonder how much involvement by Anteater support?
Great move by SC catcher to nail Bazzana to end the t7. 1-1 now

  129. Wow. Bazz with a bad night in the base paths. Was picked off 2x tonight. 2nd time was bases loaded and 2 outs. Not sure why he’s even taking that big of a lead at 1st with bases juiced. Bad move

  130. 1
    2

Beavs offense definitely struggling tonight. Some really bad plate appearances. 11 k’s on the evening. Caught looking multiple times on clear strikes. Lucky its tied at 1 but feels like this is a game USC is going to win.

  131. 7
    2

Bad loss to a garbage USC team but the injuries have forced guys like Canon Reeder into roles they’re not really able to excel in and the margin of error is much smaller and when you have some base running blunders, that will cost you the game against a team like this. This team just needs to get healthy and find a way to keep winning series until they are. Hopefully they win the next 2.

  132. 4
    3

This team isn’t going anywhere far in the post season if they keep playing like they have since conference play has begun. The record doesn’t show it, but they’ve been getting away with a lot. And we’re in the weak part of our schedule right now. That was just an absolutely terrible performance against a mediocre 9-15 team. A lot of unforced errors today that would have likely given us the win if they had not occurred. Offense was sluggish and seemed to love just watching strikes fly over the plate. Pitching giving out a lot of freebies as well.

  133. Beavs lose on a walk off single in the bottom 9th. 2 hit batters, a bunt and a single for the USC win. USC practically dogpiles at second base afterwards. Hope the Beavs figure out what went wrong because that was a garbage display of baseball all night starting with Bazanna. Guerra, Krieg, Smith, all looked lost on every at bat. Bazanna looked lost on the bases, and the return to the norm by the pitchiung staff was evident with way too may walks and hbp. Such a poor showing it almost seemed like they were waiting for someone to be a hero instead of just playing sound baseball.

Hopefully MItch is challenging them to get their head in the game because something was off tonight. McDowell was a late scratch with no info so maybe whatever that was affected everyone. No idea but possibly an explanation for such a bad game. Win the next 2 and it flushes pretty quickly but lose a couple more and it is a real bad trend.

    • This is exactly why people (rightfully so) express concern with the pitching staff and what that means to post-season success. When the offense completely shits the bed for a game or two, you go home without decent pitching. So far this season the guys not in the top 5 spots on the staff are unreliable. We walked 6 guys and hit 4 batters on top of it.

Offense hasn’t looked great vs the Friday night Pac12 pitchers. 3 hits vs UW and 4 hits tonight.

  134. 4
    2

Lmao! It’s our third loss. Anyway, the folks who watched the game saw Aoki pitch a heck of game. Then we made mistakes that you don’t win games with. People who write a seasons swan song on one baseball game are: A. Ignorant folks who don’t understand the game or B. Whiners, who aren’t happy with the #2 team in the COUNTRY, quit acting like entitled a holes, especially over ONE game!!!

    • 1
      1

This argument is getting old and if people haven’t been paying attention to the relief pitching trends of the SEASON, then they’re either: A) ignorant and don’t understand the game, or B) have their head in the sand on what that can mean for post-season success. If you don’t think having reliable pitching beyond 5 guys isn’t a detriment to post-season wins, then good for you. I also have some oceanfront property in AZ I’ve got a great deal on if you’re interested. And yes, Aoki did pitch a great game which is exactly why people highlight the lack of pitching depth thru a quarter of the season since we will see good pitching in the post-season. If the offense struggles for a game, which they will when facing good competition throughout the tourney, then we will need good reliable pitching or we go home. 93 walks and over 40 hit batters on the season isn’t good and that will give them trouble in the post-season unless they can make strides and find 3 or 4 more reliable arms in the bullpen.

      • 2
        1

In general, the best roster alignment for postseason is a legit ace and then a legit #2 (or better if you can get one, obviously)…but in a short series, the % of innings a starter can pitch go up. Same with a pen. You want fewer arms that are elite over many arms that are good just due to compression of the series/innings. i.e. only so many innings to go around over a short series. This is somewhat why the 90s Braves were inefficient. They had 3 HOF aces, but only 7 games worth of innings to go around. If the series goes 7, one guy is getting 3 games, and the other are only getting 2.

The math favors impact/consolidation in baseball postseason. Regular season it favors the opposite. Which again, is why the Braves were so good in the 90s.

This is even more true in NCAA baseball where series are shorter.

        • Exactly, Angry; I appreciate the thorough explanation. However, we won’t change Creekwater’s mind because he knows way more about postseason baseball roster building than any of the NCAA coaches. It’s great to have such a big brain on this site. The funny part is he’s complaining about losing one game because of hitting and simultaneously calling out our pitching, yet we held USC to two runs, lol if your going to overreact about one game, at least be consistent Creekwater.

          • I’ve been consistent about RD and this staff all year Whiskey, not just 1 game so if you’re going to throw shade, at least get your shit together. As for the 90’s Beaves comparison…the game is much different. Pitch counts are less and innings are less. our starters don’t go nearly as far into a game now as they did even 4 years ago. Kmatz and Segura are the only ones to even make it to the 6th inning on a start this year. Hell, our “Ace” last year had an avg of 4 innings a start. So the problem that we have is we will need the bullpen in the post-season because the game is different and our staff hasn’t shown the ability to go beyond 5 innings yet this year. Not to mention, making an Omaha run requires the bullpen due to how many games they play in a short amount of time, particularly if they’re going thru losers brackets.

As for roster building, how has that worked out for us in the post-season success under MC thus far? He’s done a great job of getting us to the post-season for sure. Remind me of how we’ve done in the P12 tourney? LSU last year had better ERA, better WHIP, more strikeouts…seemed to work out pretty well for them. Anyway, I’m looking forward to this pitching staff carrying this team, especially after giving up 17 runs to USC in game 2. Lights out stuff!

    • 2
      2

Baseball records vs any team don’t become statistically significant until you play 28 games vs that opponent. Pretty much everything is noise in a short series.

      • Hence, why the MLB plays so many games; the sport is designed to be a long battle over time to find the best team. Heck, originally a baseball game was won by the first team to score 21 aces (runs).

  135. 3
    2

I will say – having a great baseball team makes me realize what it must be like for Bama football fans, KU basketball fans etc. Always gripping when they only win by 28 points to an inferior opponent and barely cover the spread. But I do agree – anything less than Omaha will be a disappointment. They need to be a top 8 seen for super regional purposes. Goss is a huge home field advantage.

  136. Can’t win em all. But this year is one of those years that the losses for the rest of the year are “bad” losses in terms of RPI metrics. Polls will keep them high if they keep winning series but losses will chip away at the strength of their RPI. The Utah loss is holding as a “good” loss as they have played well since.

Conveniently absent during the wins, on your own site, you reappear when you read about a loss, heaven knows watching a game to form a well reasoned opinion would be too much. Almost like you just pop up to troll fans of your own Alma mater, weird, dude, just weird, but you do you.

It’s in good fun, which I thought everyone understood. I watched some of the Washington series. Roku was actually streaming the games for free, which since I don’t subscribe to the Pac-12 and don’t like to watch games on my computer, was a nice surprise. I’ll have to check out if they do that more often. A main reason I don’t watch baseball is it’s never on TV, and I don’t like to sit at the computer.

Agree with you Orange….why I stop reading Studentbeaver. Angry is falling into that category of a little bitch that won’t be happy no matter what. Come on Angry, your life isn’t as bad as Studentbeaver’s — watch a game and give us some sincere thoughts. Don’t bitch if you don’t pay attention.

  137. CU WBB whining they don’t know how physical they can be against Iowa and whiney Clark, but say they are happy to play the villains.

How about just enforcing the rules?

    • Problem Is cc is so whiney and, conspiracy theories aside, we all know how the games are cooked for the ‘stars’ that are being promoted. That’s why brink and cc fouls are ignored and anything within 3′ of them a whistle is blown immediately.

Colorado is in a rough spot because they are so aggressive, 00 plays completely out of control so a matchup with the ‘best women’s player to ever lace up jordans’ will definitely be at a disadvantage. Not to mention they don’t have a player that can match Clark’s offensive output.

I’d love to see a game that was actually officiated by the rules.

      • I watched that WVU vs Iowa game. There’s no conspiracy, it’s straight home cooking/marching orders. More then a couple of one sided calls. Even clear fouls on Iowa that were attributed to WV. It was blatant.

  138. Let’s go Beavers!

Who takes on the ND PG…Hunter? Or will TVO get that defensive assignment?

“All Hidalgo did in her first season was lead the ACC in scoring (23.3 ppg.) and steals (4.59), finish third in assists (5.5) and fourth in minutes (35.68).”

She averages as many steals individually as the Beavers do as a team.

I’m guessing Hidalgo gets good numbers, but Beavers get the victory. However, If the refereeing is lopsided, it’s a relatively close, but respectable loss for Beavers.

    • One of the refs noticed the shot clock was counting down tenths starting with ten seconds to go rather than five. It took a few minutes to straighten it out.

    • I use my phone or PC to cast to my Android TV via Chromecast. If you have a Chrome browser on a PC, you can cast an entire window, which allows you to find a stream on a website and cast it on the TV. I don’t pay for any subscriptions anymore and watch everything free.

      • I should add that you could also run an HDMI cable from the PC to the TV; in my experience, that works even better than casting.

        • Yeah I have done that for football games, but didn’t like all the wires and moving a PC around…I’ll look into these other options. I’m on the iPhone if anyone knows of other options.

  139. Just started watching Beaver woman and I think they have had 5 or 6 TO’s in about 3 minutes. Lots of standing around on offense.

  140. Hell of a job Beavers. South Carolina will be a huge challenge – but at this point – they are playing with house money.

  141. Hidalgo held to 10 points, 3 assists 3 steals…

TOs numbers were ugly obviously, but Beavers killed them on the boards…

  142. TVO with a great, clean, block and recovery…Beers with a clean “get-the-fuck-outta-here” block…

I still think the Glove should pay TVO and the Beavers a visit…

  143. No jewelry is allowed, what’s the scoop on Hidalgo and the nose ring? Did I hear correctly that she has worn it all season? Seems it cost ND 5 minutes or so for one of their best.

    • From the sounds of Ron Callan, that may be the only rule actually enforced by the refs against ND. He said the entire 3rd quarter comeback was fueled by some one sided reffing to get ND back in the game. We knew that would be the case but the Beavs were up 10 and ready to slam the door until Beers gets knocked down multiple times and a slap on the arm becomes another Beaver turnover. Couldn’t watch the game but Callan was pretty candid about his thoughts. Any comments from those who watched?

It will be even worse with South Carolina so Rueck needs to be preparing the response by himself and the team when things start shifting into ESPN home cooking.

      • Didn’t see any major advantages to ND by the refs. The majority of TOs were bad passes or couldn’t get across the half court line in ten seconds. No excuse for that.

I saw a player with a necklace on so what’s the rule, no facial jewelry?

  144. How did Stinkle get his team to the final eight a few years ago? Did have a couple assistants that were actually running things?

  145. A comment by Rueck which, I think, is a hint at one reason he has a better record than Tinkle:
About the 10 second backcourt violations he said, “I thought my role at that time was not to be emotional for sure, not to pile on. Those were obviously unique,” Rueck said. “My comment was get it across (halfcourt). Let’s go.”

    • 3
      1

I’m surprised Rueck doesn’t realize the long term benefits of waving your arms like a buffoon, sweating profusely on the sideline and yelling at your team non stop in order to confirm to all in attendance that you are coaching the team really hard. He should probably get some advice form Tinkle so he doesn’t miss those opportunities to display his coaching chops.

  146. Another game where Dorman is showing zero feel for what’s happening. Kmatz gave up a homer and was rattled and you could tell he no longer had it and then Dorman sends him out for another inning and USC takes advantage. No clue how a pitching coach can consistently be this clueless and how Mitch Canham allows this to continue

  147. 1
    1

Down 9-3. Wowzer. Looking like a series loss here. 3rd reliever comes in and throws a wild pitch and advances runner to 2nd and 3rd . Pitching is fine though!

  148. Beavs pitching has largely been fine this season but in games where they need a reliever in the middle innings to come in and put out the fire, they’ve had a complete meltdown. This happened last year a lot, especially in the final couple months. This speaks to a leadership problem with Dorman. He has terrible feel for the game and when he comes out for a mound visit with a struggling pitcher, it immediately gets 10x worse.

    • We’ve got 5 reliable pitchers and after that, it’s been inconsistent at best. Pitching looked great last weekend since we only had to use 7 pitchers. Clearly this team wasn’t ready to play this weekend but they’ve got to find 3-4 more reliable pitchers out of the bullpen if they want to make a splash in the post-season. Getting boat raced by a subpar USC team is not a good look.

      • 1
        1

The explanation for Dormans decisions tonight can be pretty easily guessed. He mentioned the schedule for next week as a concern during an interview on Joe Beaver show last week. The Beavs will be playing 5 games in 7 days next week. I think Dorman was trying to steal a couple of innings out of Kmatz with next week in mind rather than coaching the game in front of him.
I don’t think Dorman is a very good strategist as a coach and if this is what he did, then it is a loser approach to throw away a game by sending out gas cans in the 5th, and leaving Kmatz in for an inning too long to try and gain a couple of innings out of him when he has already lost his edge.

This pitching staff is actually hot garbage with no ace and only Bridget Holmes who is worth anything in the bullpen. Dorman talked pretty big during fall camp and preseason about his upgraded staff. He is the problem. Mitch needs to begin calling some mlb colleagues and find another pitching coach asap.

        • Careful, the Dorman fan club is going to tell you you’re wrong and you don’t know ball! This was Kmatz’s worst outing of the year, much like it was the worst performance by just about everyone on the team. Everything was awful. RD is not the answer but I don’t see MC moving on from him unfortunately. Our “Ace” last year only made it past the 4th inning 2x all season. Arguably the best pitcher RD coached was Hjerpe who credits Driveline with the growth he made during that his last off-season and was a Casey/Yeskie recruit. I will say Kmatz has looked better this year than he did last year but I’m having a hard time finding any other pitcher that has gotten better under RD. Lattery is the same 4 years in. Same with Lawson. Hunter has been ok this year but he was a better pitcher last year before the injury. Yeskie wasn’t perfect and didn’t always have the knockout staff either, but we always seemed to have a clear Ace and pitchers would develop. I don’t get that with RD.

  149. 3
    4

Honestly might have to revise my prediction. The team won’t even make it out of the regionals playing like this. Utah series could very well have been a series lost too.

  150. 2

Do college teams do that much scouting on opposing pitchers? That SC middle reliever with the slow curve was making Beav hitters look silly and like they had never seen a 12/6 curveball before.

    • 2
      1

Beavs don’t make any adjustments for pitchers. Arkansas pitcher made them look just as bad but he was throwing fastballs and sliders all day. USC sends out a couple of guys throwing only off speed stuff and Beavs don’t change the approach either day.
It comes down to either coaches dot think it is a big deal or players aren’t listening to coaching if they are instructed to take a different approach and sit off speed instead dead red on fastballs.
      Curious situation.
Has Turley improved since last year? I would’ve expected better consistency from him.

      • Turley has been solid this season. Batting in the .270s but he’s third in RBI, tied for 2nd in HR and tied for 2nd in BB. He’s tied for 1st with k’s though, which you kind of expect with a young guy who’s a slugger. Would be nice to have his avg closer to .300 but he’s been very solid this season.

    • 1
      1

Yeah, I didn’t watch it, but I read that ESPN’s post-game coverage of yesterday’s game was more focused/obsessed with ND’s loss and the “nose-ring” incident than about the Beav’s big win.

    • 7
      2

Nice of ESPN to present to scenario ahead of time and set up SEC teams scouting now to poach Ruecks squad.
Honestly I think OSU NIL is a waste of money if you can’t even expect womens bball players to stay together after a season like this. Just drop don and create a subdivision with no NIL and compete on a level playing field. ESPN has destroyed what was great about college athletics and they report on stuff as if they have always been an impartial bystander.

        • I was thinking that it is more likely that Adele Blacklock will leave, considering that she got more playing time last year.

      • 1
        1

The WCC conference wbb has some ok teams. It will be interesting to see how the traitors do with extended travel and diluted conferences. Will pre-season teams be cupcakes or will Beavs be the cupcakes.

I don’t rule out Rueck leaving at some point, just not this year.

  151. 2
    3

No game today due to rain. USC technically gets the sweep. Might not be the worst thing in the world. Guys were clearly not on their game and RD was already maoning about 5 games in 7 days so this gives them an unexpected extra day. Maybe they can take today and go find a bowling alley or a nice field to lay in and do some more visualization. Next up is the Zags on Monday. They’re only 7-14 but have went 4-0 in WCC play. Should be a win as the Zags don’t appear to be as good this season as they’ve been in the previous few years.

  152. USC game in a long review. Not sure why. The USC player clearly touched the ball last.

And the reason I know is because I can differentiate her nails from the other player.

  153. SC coach credits make practice squad:
“I have to credit our male practice squad, the Highlighters. The Highlighters are really, really, really good. Although a lot of times they beat us in practice, so it makes it easier when we’re able to just come out and play our competition because the Highlighters, no matter what the speed of our opponents are, they’re much quicker. They do it at a much faster pace. So they’ve allowed us to see the game a little slower if teams aren’t as quick as our Highlighters. It’s more about practice and preparation, and obviously we’re getting the results from that preparation.”

    • Huh, that’s a pretty smart move. Is this a normal thing for women’s teams? It’s the first time I’ve heard of something like this.

        • All be dipped. It makes total sense. When I hear practice squad I assume it’s walk-ons and red shirts and some mercenaries mixed in to fill out any holes. I’m shocked I didn’t know this was a thing.

          • It’s always been a thing. The WBB used to (might still do) post ads for practice squad players to play against the women’s team. BTW, these guys aren’t rec ballers, they have legit bball backgrounds.

          • Yes, and they need to place ads because they have to find players who were good in high school but did not pursue college hoops for whatever reasons. I am not positive, but I think they have to be students at the school also.

  154. Kennedy Brown doesn’t look very comfortable with her role at Duke. Too bad she left, but suppose her leaving might have helped open some opportunity for Beers

  155. 4
    3

Just fricking brutal officiating! SC does not need any help from the officials. The call on Gardiner was very questionnable. The one on Beers was blatantly horrible! I can’t hardly watch bball because I don’t understand what is and isn’t a foul. One player runs amok with no consequences and another player breathes on an opposing player and its a foul.

  156. 1
    1

I wonder if refs have a perspective on the match-ups, I don’t mean bias just common sense. As in, that’s a key OSU player and I don’t really know what happened there, I’m not going to call it, play on. It would be fascinating to know the review process and what is their accountability for poor or unnecessary game-altering calls.

    • 3
      1

to ohiobeavs chagrin, espn is not in it for south carolina. All of the announcers and studio analysts said those weren’t fouls on Beers and Gardiner.

Studio analysts said x factor in the second half is the refs for their bad calls.

      • Studio announcers can sound off when they know the result has been predetermined by their superiors and refs know the importance of certain players to each team.
Of course Beers and Gardiner get beat up the whole game. Of course, Beers and TVO get bogus fouls in the first half to establish the course of the game from that point on.

It is fine to mock my conspiratorial expectation but I be seen it too many times to be swayed otherwise. ESPN needs to have LSU and South Carolina in the final 4, Iowa likely gets
The same treatment tomorrow, maybe not since they might roll the dice on an Iowa championship appearance for better ratings.

I’m surprised Rueck didn’t decide to go ballistic at the first egregious call just for the theatre of it and to make a point. Real basketball fans across the land likely realize the fix was already in for South Carolina anyway. ESPN is ruining college athletics in all categories related to their own production inventory. It isn’t much different than old WWF now. They write the script out for matchups that are interesting, demand certain seeding and eventual matchups then press refs for the desired outcomes as games appear to be played in all uprightness from the player’s perspectives.

  157. I thought the officiating leveled out somewhat in the second half. Beavs made it a game, just could not hit big shots when needed.

    • 5
      3

That is how it is scripted. Put the underdog behind the 8 ball with sketchy calls and it directly affects the flow of the game. Always subjective calls benefit the favorite.

    • 7
      1

Putting Beers and Gardiner in foul trouble early completely changes their ability to play. They had to play the entire 2nd half on their heels

  158. Watched the OSU Beavers WBB team against South Carolina (my first).

They really need to schedule the women’s NCAA tournament close to, but separate from when the men’s is scheduled— it really has become its own thing in such a short period of time and needs the space it has made for itself.

      • I have always thought they should work with other and have the Men playing Thursday-Sunday and the Women Saturday-Monday. Till Final Four when Women go Friday/Sunday and Men go Saturday/Monday.

I’d also argue you could use joint sites in some or all rounds.

But I could see the argument for staggering it, didn’t the women used to be a week ahead of the men like baseball/softaball? Or did they used to play Monday-Thursday?

  159. Scott tells how he really feels, listen at least to the first 3 minutes or so then pick it back up around 14.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yo0AAmo81cU

ADDED: a quote from OSU Athletic Communications
“Y’all got to see it today, a fearless, gritty, tough display of competitive fire and passion and togetherness that is as inspiring as anything. What’s more inspiring than what you all just watched? Those of you who have been paying attention, which is not most of you, all year long, you would know that from day one. If you were with us in Italy, you would have seen what you saw today: Passion, unbelievable energy, togetherness, and a competitive fire that’s just not normal,” Rueck continued.

    • 7
      1

Scott has his best recruiting tool in those 3 minutes. He should be able to appeal to best competitive athletes who don’t want the manufactured drama of LSU, South Carolina, Iowa and the rest. Keep it levelheaded, be hard nosed and compete with class and dignity rather than WWF of Mulkey and Staley. Go Beavs and glad we have Scott Rueck building a powerhouse womens bball program.

  160. I think you can legitimately question the quality of wbb officials when the court thing in Portland went unnoticed until today. Glad that it can’t be blamed on Portland, since the courts are shipped in by the NCAA. But how did no one notice it?

      • No… NCAA’s vendor

“At the conclusion of tonight’s game and practice in Portland, the NCAA will be measuring all court lines and markings on the court at the Moda Center,” it said. “While the NCAA’s vendor has apologized for the error, we will now investigate how this happened in the first place. The NCAA is working now to ensure the accuracy of all court markings for future games.

“We are not aware of any other issues at any of the prior sites for men’s or women’s tournament games. The NCAA regrets the error was not discovered sooner.”

  161. I’ve never been one to complain about refs. I’m not a complainer. I believe you should just focus on what you can control. Complaining only makes things worse in my opinion. Also, I don’t tend to believe in conspiracy theories. I tend to think that the refs are honestly trying to do the best they can, and it all evens out over the course of a game. I also believe that certain playing styles lend themselves to getting more or less fouls called.

Okay, with all that being said, I did something that I have never done before. I just rewatched the game, with slo-mo ready to go, specifically looking at/for fouls. What I discovered was absolutely shocking!

+ Every single possible foul that could possibly, reasonably get called on us was called.
+ Several unbelievable, clearly not fouls, were called on us as well.
+ A couple of times the SC player clearly fouled us, but they called those on us too.
+ Our players barely complained, they took it on the chin and went back to work with a look of disbelief on their faces.
+ Every single foul that was called against SC was very clearly a foul (and yet the announcers kept acting like SC was the victim of a bunch of questionable calls), and the SC players and coach would drop a bunch of whiney curse words every time.
+ I counted at least 10 non-calls on SC throughout the game that would have totally changed the dynamics. They would crash into our players from behind on rebounds and we would fall to the ground, no call. They would hook us with their arms and pull us out of the way to get in front, no call. They would slap all over our arms until they got their hands on the ball to get a jumpball called, no call. They were constantly pushing into us with their lower bodies and thighs and knees knocking us off balance when we had the ball down low, no call. Beers had a lay-up in the first half that she made, but was totally hacked, no call.
+ On the flipside, I couldn’t find a single non-call in our favor. There were no times where a Beaver foul went uncalled.
+ That 10 second backcourt violation was total BS. First, the 30 second shotclock started counting down the instant the missed SC shot hit the rim (is this normal?) rather than waiting for us to gain possession of the rebound. Second, that type of shotclock immediately shows 29 for the first full second, then 28 for the entire 2nd second, etc., which means that 10 seconds have not fully passed until the instant that the clock switches from showing 20 to 19 seconds. By the time that shot clock switched from 20 to 19, Hunter was a good 3 feet into the front court.

So what am I supposed to conclude? Some of you would say intentional conspiracy theory. Is that truly what I saw today? Or is it just extreme confirmation bias, and they’re all just utterly blind to it?

I wish I had even the slightest bit of video editing/production skills so that I could put it all together back to back to back in like a 5 minute video. No orange colored glasses would be necessary to see the obvious glaring discrepancy.

Do teams ever do that and send it to the NCAA? Does the NCAA care?

Looking to next year, I see most of our core roster returning. Surely Scott can sell them on entering the season ranked in or near the top 10, going undefeated, claiming a #1 or #2 seed, and another deep run.

    • I had to turn it off after Beers got called for her third on a play that would have been a two-minute minor in hockey for the girl who cheap-shotted her in the back.

That woman tries that in a men’s game, and she’s lucky if someone isn’t trying to make her eat a fist.

I thought I was tuning in to see a great team play ours.

They aren’t. They’re a bunch of cheap shots gaming the refs.

  162. This will be a long one but just my opinions on what players can work on. Are only real comp next year in the new conference wcc is Gonzaga. If we return the whole crew I could easily see us going undefeated and being a 1 seed going into the tournament next year. Really really interested to see how gardiner progresses she’s been getting way better at actual posts up and driving to the rim she could really become unguardable next year. Also interested to see beers progress assuming she will fully add the 3 point shot into her game would also like her dribbling to improve more as being able to drive from the free throw line/ even three point line could make her unguardable. Paurova could also take a huge step next year she can already drive left or right and has elite quickness and can shoot threes if she can add in better handles as in behind the back etc and a huge thing she should be working on is driving hard and then quick stop into a jumper will make her also very hard to guard. Talia is already amazing not really sure how she gets better some of her one on one moves are already elite if she 6 foot 1 she would be deadly. Hansford also got way better throughout this season, hoping next year she can drive more as I think she’s able to and will make her way harder to guard as she’s already has elite 3 point shooting Twas good to see her knock down a floated today Vs South Carolina. Hunter is already really good, will be interesting to see how much she grows her fundamentals are so good you can tell she’s been putting in work in the gym for many years, I think some one on one moves and working on euro steps and different ways to drive to the basket could help her as she can drive well but is only using speed and finishes on the same side she drives to. With aj I’m curious to see how she gets better she could improve her 3 point shooting, would also like her to be able to drive better and finish at the rim as she’s got great length and shouldn’t have to solely rely on hitting jumpers. If we keep this core I mentioned above I believe we can easily make elite 8 again and don’t see any reason as to why we wouldn’t at the very least have final 4 be the floor of expectations. The 4 other players that could improve a lot in my opinion are Selah heide ie she just needs to work on one on one post play against someone who is stronger and faster than her and be able to finish with both sides plus working on her speed and rebounding/boxing out aka she’s need to play stronger. Rees could also improve immensely her fundamentals imo aren’t great she can’t finish left almost at all and can’t dribble very well, and doesn’t have many effective post moves I’ve seen, her two huge positives I saw is she honestly improved a bunch on defense can block a lot of shots, plus she can shoot three pretty well. Last two players are blacklock which I honestly think will surprise some people next year, by the end of the year when she’d come in she looked like she could drive well and hit jumpers which is great as it makers her much more dual threat and not just a three point shooter. The one thing I think she could work on is improving her defense. Kennedy shuler is the last player that I think will be interesting to see her improvement from what I understand she did dual sports ie soccer and basketball and had college offers for both but chose basketball. So it doesn’t surprise me that she is missing some key things in her game as in she needs to be able to shoot a 3 and also how to find a quick jumper off the dribble. If all these players improve their game and stay i honestly don’t know who we lose against. The one wild card is Susie Marie yepes who redshirted this year her juco numbers were pretty good specifically in juco post season, would have loved to watch her in practice just to know where she’s at. the one other wildcard is if we do have a transfer or two it wouldn’t surprise me if we had took a transfer or two hopefully rueck would be very picky and only recruits transfers who can come in and immediately play and have high ceilings but i guess we will see! Go beavs

  164. The officials were awful, but some of it was the style SC played. Being 10 deep, they created contact and these officials were looking to call fouls. SC could survive if the calls went against them because they have 4/5 bigs they could play without significant drop off.

SC also had better athletes. (#2, 23 and 25 really stood out), I think ORSTs top 6-7 is as skilled as SC, but nowhere near athletic or physical.

Beavs battled and minus a 4 min stretch in the middle of the 3 quarter, they were in it.

    • 3
      1

There was a play in the first quarter where the SC player took two steps before she started a drive, and she beat the D to the basket, because of it. I called a walk, and my wife says, “Yeah, but you say they always travel. So it sounds like they just don’t call it any more.”

I meant that in a discussion about perimeter players coming to a running stop, then taking another step (or even a bunny hop for a shot, sometimes), so I told her that’s fair. Maybe the refs will just call the game that way for everyone.

On our next possession, Hansford took two steps before a drive and got called for it.

      So much for that idea.

The expectation is for the aggressor to get the “most” favorable calls, because they simply get away with more, in a game where the refs are “letting them play.” But if the calls are so lopsided, to the point where someone can be forechecked in the back… on a basketball court… and have a foul called on them, it’s beyond a bad look.

I would have asked the refs to watch the replay and assess a flagrant 1 to that woman. There is no place on a basketball court for that kind of play. If it was a men’s game, it probably would have ended up in a shoving match, at best.

A cheap shot is a cheap shot is a cheap shot.

    Women’s basketball transfer portal incoming!

Tennessee fired their women’s coach. Expect them to take a run at Rueck.

Not sure how much NIL money there is for women’s bball but I can’t imagine its a lot and definitely limited to a select few schools. Certainly Beers, Gardiner and TVO will get offers via backchannels.

  166. Nancy Armour @ USAToday putting the decline of WBB in a positive light….ugh:

“ALBANY, N.Y. — Cover your ears and eyes and put your tender sensibilities aside because Iowa and LSU are about to go at it again.

Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. Epic trash talking and even better basketball. A grudge, errr, rematch a year in the making.

If you’re not clearing your calendar for Monday night, you obviously don’t like sports. Or fun. This is the biggest game of March Madness, men’s and women’s tournaments. It would be better if a national title was at stake rather than just a trip to the Final Four, but you take games like this whenever, and in whatever round, you can get them.

“…The complaints about the refs were at a volume usually reserved for the men’s game. There were societal debates about the “appropriateness” of female athletes trash talking and cussing, and whether Reese had crossed a line.”
    ….
“…It was high drama and even better theater, and the carryover effect has been seen all season in skyrocketing ratings, increased attendance and interest in players not even named Clark or Reese. The fact we get to do it all over again a year later is nothing but a good thing.

    Scratch that. A great thing.
    ….
“It’s just another game to help grow women’s basketball,” Reese said. “It’s going to be unfortunate, of course, to play them just in the (Elite Eight), but of course we’re just happy to be a part of it.”

The NCAA overlords should be giving thanks for Monday night’s game. Maybe kicking a few bucks to the NIL collectives at LSU and Iowa while they’re at it, too.”

Another “meteor game” for college sports…

    • Another horrible take by the media clapping to see controversy, poor sportsmanship, greed, misplaced priorities and praising 2 whiny athletes who actually get more calls than they really deserve in reality.
Reese and Clark may be fine basketball players but it smacks a little bit of the Bird/Magic NCAA theater circa 1979 only a lot more manufactured by ESPN.

      • I only saw the second half, but I didn’t see any preferential treatment for Clark or Reese. In fact, Reese fouled out on a pretty questionable call.

  167. Bottom of 3 and it’s 0-0. Beavs with 1 hit and 2 walks. 6 k’s. It’s early but they should be at up on the Zags who had close to a 7.0 team ERA.

  168. Turley with a basehit and scores the leadoff walk by Reeder. Turley been a bright spot over the last few games while the lineup has struggled.

  169. Anyone heard of an injury to Lattery? He’s only been in 2 games. Hasn’t pitched since the TX trip. He’s been one of RD’s favorites for several years so I’m thinking he’s injured but haven’t seen any mention of one. I’m also curious about Kasper. Any updates? His injury looked like a knee knock thing so for him to be out as long as he has seems to be a little more serious.

    • Seems like Canham is being extra careful to not rush injured players back. Maybe with the depth they have it’s a luxury he can afford, but it will catch up to them at some point.

  170. Nix on difference between football in South and in PAC:

“In the sense, the hostility and maybe the unhealthy pressure that is added to 18- to 22-year-olds by outside noise and fans,” the Alabama native told The Ryen Russillo Podcast. “Like it’s almost like an unhealthy obsession in the South. I was that way growing up. I thought it was life-or-death football.”

And, Beavers football spring practice resumes Thursday April 4. May be good time for a new thread, particularly with WBB having finished their run to the E8?

    • I think the “life-or-death football” attitude is common in the south and midwest. Several movies are based on that perception and likely quite accurate, if not even a bit sugar-coated.

      • I’m not in the Deep South(Nashville) but it is very much life or death. Im sure you have some of the aau/travel ball culture back in Oregon but it is on a different level in the south. My 6’4 260 pound freshmen, outside of school training has a strength coach 2-3x per week, as well as oline training 2-3x a week with former nfl linemen just to be competitive at his high school. Our Oline features 4 kids over 6’4 270lbs. This years senior class has 7 kids playing college ball next year.

        • I’ve stopped donating to college athletics. It’s a bottomless pit that will lead to the same conclusion every year.
I’d rather follow pro sports at this point where I know what the cost will be and nobody is constantly harrasing me for handouts.
Plus the cost of attending a college game is on par with pro sports anyway and the time commitment is much bigger for someone like me who lives 100 minutes from Corvallis.
          The business model is broken.

I’ll still attend 1 or 2 football games per year but that’s about it.

          • That’s the thing that’s wild … TvO spent the past season begging fans to support the team, fill gill , buy her merch, 22 rocking with you til the end… Then, 36 hours after an elite 8 finish, and poised to do again next year, she says peace out ?! Fuck that. Why support any of them? Sincerely not sure what there is to gain when you state your purpose is to win a championship and you leave a perfect opportunity to do so.

I’ll buy Tix, I’ve already renewed football, I’ll renew WBB, but damned if I’ll buy into the fake bs of them being all in on OSU, or any other uni for that matter.

You want to be a cog in a wheel, good, you’re disposable, fuck off and let’s bring another one in

      • Supposedly not nil related…
“i just want to reemphasize that i am graduating from OSU. i stand on everything i have said, and NIL has played ZERO (!!!!!) factor in this decision. it is deeply personal and some of y’all do not know as much as you think you do. thank you to everyone who has been supportive”

    • Dam. The way Talia always talked about OSU with such passion, I thought she’d stick around for sure. It’s disappointing, but I can’t even be mad at her. She gave everything she had for this program and provided us with one of the best moments in OSU WBB history, if not OSU sports history, with the game winner against UCLA. It sucks even more because if she’s leaving, it’s almost certainly a sign that Beers and Gardiner are on their way out, possibly Hunter too.

      • 1
        1

I would be curious to know what NIL dollars look like for higher-level WBB players. I don’t see the point of her transferring, there’s only one national champion every year, so TVO is going from a serious contender to another serious contender she thinks has a slightly better chance. If UConn or LSU offer her then I can’t begrudge her for that, but otherwise, what’s the point other than more money?

      • I’m disappointed she’s leaving but this “…if not OSU sports history,..” is quite the hyperbole! :)

Wonder how OSU has kept Martinez? Martinez and Bray looking even more rare now…

If the WBB had stuck together, they’d have a great shot at S16 and or E8…amazingly disappointing…

Seeing Pope too makes you think all of the quality men and women will be bailing, not just because of the coaching but the situation of the school.

Makes it harder to root for the kids as players, certainly don’t want to invest in their merch certainly

Creates a whole cycle of mistrust and the beat goes on

We are a baseball school once again! It was nice flirting with success in wbb once again but the path forward is not at the big table unfortunately. Baseball might be the only sport to actually weather this in OK fashion. Lots of smaller schools have good baseball programs so seems like the Beavs could hang on. Of course, the NCAA could also decide to increase baseball paid positions and scholarships and that would definitely hurt.

I’ll be glad when they start paying college players and lock them into contracts although I would think there will always be an out for grad transfers. Is NIL money that nice for WBB?

          1

I’m ready to put asterisks on all of the championships won in these last 2 years with NIL changing the landscape of sport’s so dramatically. At some point there has to be a better approach than this.
It is so disappointing to watch TVO leave when she is the heart and soul of a top 5 team of everyone returned. There is no doubt about tampering and money being thrown at these players just football. How much does it take to pull a 5 star athlete
From a program as a grad transfer? And for what? To be a contributor on anothe top 5 team? I’m disgusted not so much at TVO but at the entire system and how it only feeds into this greed enticement system. Mike Leach proposed the best plan I’ve seen where the athletes must chose to be NIL only or on scholarship but they can’t bounce back and forth. She just got a free education for 4’years, made an elite 8 with a full roster returning and leaves. So sad. I figured that was why Rueck was being asked about that stuff at the post postgame presser because some on the press already knew that Beavs players were already being offered money from SEC programs. ESPN and SEC have ruined college sports.

        • Catlin Clark’s NIL is valued at $818,000. For the D1 all time scoring leader that doesn’t seem like it’s that much.

  172. On a more positive note, Beavs lead Gonzaga 15-4 top of the eight. Zags do have the bases loaded with no outs. I like this “official” P-12 broadcast, feels closer to an actual telecast.

    • Sorry, it was 13-4 (I think). Gonzaga only scored one run, so now 13-5 top of the ninth. Looks like a two-game sweep for the good guys.

Pope and TVO. Guys it’s a business. Support the school, but it’s a business so best not to get too stuck on the players. I think what gets me about TVO is all the talk even the day of the game, etc and then it’s peace out a few days later. Lol. Let’s not pretend that it’s “once a beav, always a beav”, “love being here”, so on and so forth. Don’t give me that bullshit. It’s a business, don’t put all these talk points to it…means jack shit at the end of the day. I’d much rather have real talk. I’m here cause this was the school to give me an opportunity but I’m gone when/if better opportunity comes up.

Anyway, since we’re a baseball school, we’re putting up points on the Zags. Good to see.

    • “It’s a business” says the same guy ripping our top 10 baseball team. “Support the school”, lmao!!! You are an insufferable redact.

        2

Can you not support something while also calling out faults or areas of weakness? Or do you require blind allegiance? These things are not mutually exclusive you dolt. Not sure why your panties are in a twist about observations on our pitching staff…seems silly.

          4

Lol, I thought it was hitting issues when we lost 2-1 to USC? Now we are back to pitching being the issue after a strong outing by the offense (not to mention the pitching was pretty good to). All I am asking is keep the same energy and be consistent. Instead you are reactionary like most Duck fans I know, and it drives me nuts.

          • Wtf are you even talking about? You’re trolling on my comments and you’re not even accurate in what you’re accusing me of. Drives me nuts. Lol

          • Haha! Trolling? Hardly! You make up half the comments on here, and most of them are hot takes—hard to ignore. Then you get upset when anyone questions you.

I didn’t see the full list of Men’s BB in the portal:
    G-Jordan Pope
    G-Christian Wright
    F-Jayden Stevens
    G-Justin Rochelin
    C- KC Ibekwe

Will we even have enough players to field a roster next year? What the hell

    • 4
      1

I think we all knew Pope was not going to stay. The other four are barely D-1 players, granted better coaching may help them. Wright will be on his third program and shot 19% from the three-point line this year. Ibekwe can’t make a layup and is a walking turnover machine. Might actually be good timing that they are off to a mid-major league.

Not like he made any significant impact. I think he was just on a two-year contract also. Maybe it was not going to be renewed?

        • Perhaps but he also has deep ties to Ford. Played there, coached there and was apparently born there according to Daschel.

All these transfers out pretty much confirm that probably close to the entirety of the DamNation NIL fund went towards retaining Martinez, and not much else. Didn’t expect TVO to go. Kind of ironic that she was the voice of the “built not bought” OSU commerical, and now she is presumably leaving for more money

She’s leaving a gradute. Maybe money is involved maybe not. But she earned the right to transfer. Goodluck to her.

      • Yeah, maye she just wants a new environment. I enjoyed OSU, but after 4 years was moving on…

If she’s got a boyfriend at SC, maybe she thinks she can go there, pair with Juju and get to the final four. It still seems like her best betfor final four was if this team stuck together, maybe added one more athletic player at the 4 or 5 spot for when Beers or Gardiner get in foul trouble.

      • Per her Twitter:
“i just want to reemphasize that i am graduating from OSU. i stand on everything i have said, and NIL has played ZERO (!!!!!) factor in this decision. it is deeply personal and some of y’all do not know as much as you think you do. thank you to everyone who has been supportive”

She also has previously stated she was rocking with the Beavs til the end so take it for what it’s worth

        • She’s following her boyfriend is my guess. Those sometimes don’t end in fairytails like the young women believe they will. Hope it turns out for the best.

        • She said she came to OSU to “cut down nets” and get an education. She got to the Elite 8 and She’s graduated and moving on. Good post by her.

Loved her commitment and effort, defense, how she could block shots, control the ball, and get the TO.

        • I still think it’s somewhat BS given the rise of the program and her previous comments, but if she’s going to USC because of a boyfriend it’s more understandable.

  176. I’m not happy about TVLO leaving also, but I kind figured the entire season she would grad transfer afterwards to Stanford/Duke… She’s an a great student and I hope her all the best at the next stage, don’t view her departure equal to the others.

    • seeing a similar sentiment from quite a few people in the Twittersphere too. Especially over the last 24 hours

Angry was right, college athletics is imploding

  177. MBB basically starting at square one now, assuming Pope is really gone. He’s not official, though, so maybe the NIL dudes can summon enough cash to keep him?

  178. Tinkle doesn’t even have any commitments yet in this recruiting class? I think his new nickname should be WTF. Is there just no plan whatsoever?

We didn’t get the state player of the year (also a 4-star recruit) because he went to CSU. We missed on a legacy guy (Maurer) who is headed to Grand Canyon instead.

      1

This must be really discouraging for Tinkle and potentially Rueck if there IS an exodus of WBB players.

How successfully the long game is played by Murthy and Barnes will be key, and its important to guard against hopelessness in certain programs.

      • Now that Pat Chun has left WSU, it’s hard to overestimate the role Barnes (and maybe Murthy) will play in the future of the PAC?

  179. Bilodeau the newest entry to the portal.

    G-Jordan Pope
    F- Tyler Bilodeau
    G-Christian Wright
    F-Jayden Stevens
    G-Justin Rochelin
    C- KC Ibekwe

  180. Would Tinkle have to quit/resign/retire/go away to his house in Coeur d’alene and never be heard from again, if he has no roster and no assistant coaches?

  181. “I haven’t known a day of peace since (the national championship). And it sucks,” Reese reiterated after LSU’s 94-87 loss to top-seeded Iowa. “But I still wouldn’t change. I wouldn’t change anything.”

-Angel Reese, who declared for NBA draft in “Vogue” magazine today…

That’s a comment (as is her choice of publication) on the state of the game and how she has/has not handled fame and notoriety….

  182. As mentioned above, Dexter Akanno has entered the portal. Look, this team wasn’t good and there was 0 reason to think they’d be better next year had they stuck around but damn, 8 players and counting. Rataj is the only starter not yet in the portal. Combined with the fact that we’ve seen 0 recruiting from WT, I’m not sure where the hell he’s getting any bodies to play ball.

    G-Jordan Pope
    F-Tyler Bilodeau
    G-Dexter Akanno
    G-Christian Wright
    F-Jayden Stevens
    G-Justin Rochelin
    C- KC Ibekwe
    C- Chol Marial

      • The irony is that some of these players would probably do better in the WCC as that is about where their skill set lies (Pope withstanding). May be that Tinkle is truly the problem and Barnes needs to take action.

If we take a step back and recount the many departures from WSU and OSU since last August when the PAC12 dissolved overnight, it is quite astounding and a bit disconcerting.
    WSU lost:
    AD Patrick Chun. (UW)
MBB head coach Kyle Smith. (Stanford)
10 mbb players in the portal
Volleyball coach Jen Greeny (West Virginia)
    QB Cam Ward
    WR Kyle Williams
    WR Josh Kelly
Plus 15 other football transfers going out

    OSU lost:
    Head coach Jonathon Smith
    Coach Mahalzi
    DJU
    Aidan Chiles
    Silas Bolden
    Simone Lolohea
    Tanner Miller
    Easton Masceranas
    Aioli Arnold
    Jerome McCoy
    Jack Veiling
    Jake Overman
    Atticus Sappington

    Mens bball:
    Pope
    Biledaeu
    Akannu
    WBB:
    TVO

Major sports are getting crushed in the interim and we can’t do anything about it. Bray has a shot to make big waves in the next 2 years and Rueck has a team set to make deep runs if not win it all as long as they stay intact.

This is legitimately irreparable harm to the universities by the departing 10 and the media driven process of breaking the PAC12 financially to consolidate the big brands into fewer conferences.

I despise the whole process and those pulling the strings. Hard to blame the athletes as they are navigating an outrageous situation and instability is the name of the game right now. Get your cash and your degree because you will forfeit your legacy as a Beav by shortsighted decisions.

  184. Canzano reporting that there’s another 3-6 wbb players weighing options. One would think that there’s more domino’s to fall there. I can’t imagine the men’s bb team is done with the defectors. Rataj is good enough to play for a better team and he would be able to better showcase his offensive capabilities. I wonder how many players WT has went through over the last 3-4 years. It’s seemed like there’s been a handful of new players every year and it’s just this revolving door of 1 or 2 year guys. Not to mention his xfer portal scoops haven’t been very good either. Several have sat due to injury for a bulk of their time here. It’s really incredible what’s been going on and yet there’s still the WT truthers out there.

  185. Hey the Beavs made it into the latest CFB Super League proposal! Are we big time now?

Supposedly it’s all the P5 conference teams plus another group of teams that can be promoted or relegated on a regular basis.

  186. Did anyone pick up that the new Wazzu MBB coach is our own Mike Riley’s nephew, David Riley? I had no idea. I thought it was a telling state of affairs that the Montana St coach turned down the Wazzu job.

    • Logi has been at MSU 1 year, his record was 14-14 before one of “those” tournament runs and they lost to Grambling in the first 4. He can up his recruiting this year. MSU, has a passionate fan base, and a fair amount of money. An aside, MSU’s president Cruzado, is very – some say too very – involved in the athletic department. Ask Rob Ash, wherever he is. She was right there with a new contract. Imo he made a good choice. He has a better chance of building a good resume at MSU than at the present WSU.

  187. The way forward for OSU and Wazzu is position yourself as a place players will be able to show what they can do and not sit on the bench. You get a chance to go to a bigger school offering a bigger check? Go ahead. It’s always been this way for the coaches anyway. I do wonder how much happier the players who have left OSU are though – or if they have regrets. And of course Tinkle would be gone if they could afford a new contract – his contract lapsing around the time the Beavs and Wazzu will have to make a decision on the future of the Pac-2 is probably a plus. It will give more certainty to the next coach and they’ll get a better hire than they would now.

    • I have confidence that Rueck can create a “Gonzaga” with WBB in the WCC if he’s willing. Not sure about Tinkle, his teams were competitive at Montana.

    • I fear Tinkle thinks he will do better in the WCC. Other than Pope and Biladeau -whoever would pick up any of the other players? Can you go back to a JC? OTOH, if any of them showed marked improvement at any other location, we would know for certain what an inept coach WT is.

  188. 3
    3

I do wish Tinkle would just retire – or “agree to part ways” take his money over a longer period. I’ve never seen a coach struggle as much for such a long period of time at a school. We weren’t even able to enjoy the fluke run to the 8 because of Covid and all the games were away from Corvallis. The yearly migrations of players and assistant coaches says so much.

  189. 1
    5

Pretty naive to think that the WBB players would stick around after a good run.

Talia gave the school 4 good years and graduated. She has the right to do what she wants.

If Rueck doesn’t get picked off as well, he’ll have to pivot to a second chance university. Find talented players who weren’t getting it done at big schools. And eventually he will leave unless he takes a pay cut.

  190. Given his track record at OSU, I’m surprised Rueck is still here. There are bigger schools who spend a lot more money that don’t have a quarter of the success Scott has had here – and his style, the players he develops could win anywhere.
