Our Basketball Team is Horrible

94

More of the same. Junk ball, no defense, lack of intensity, focus, and execution, etc.

Another embarrassing loss.

Another “first win ever versus a pac-10 school” –Choppin State this time. They were 0-16. Why do so many teams get their first and only Pac wins versus the Beavs? Hmm.

Mike Parker says, “Oregon State soccer had a heartbreaking loss earlier today.”

So, just more of the same. Embarrassing loses where the opponent has never beaten a Pac school, heartbreaking loses, etc etc. The fire Bob Decarolis chants will get louder as this basketball season progresses.

    • I didn’t see, either, but who cares, really. He is horrible. He should have stuck with the Princeton offense. At least it looked structured. It might have fooled us into thinking he was decent a bit longer.

  1. Angry,

I hope you’re the one that makes the loudest calls for BDC’s firing. To say I’m pissed about the basketball situation is an understatement. Both DeCarolis and Robinson need to be given their walking papers!!!

  2. Oh my God. Has to be the worst loss I have seen in 20 years from men’s hoops. BDC you are a frickin’ joke. Ed Ray seriously needs to relieve the AD from his duties tomorrow. This has gone too far in the dumps. Interim or next AD can decide if Robinson finishes the season. Beyond disgusted with my university. Enough is enough. No more!

    • Try the Oregon University System of Higher Education. I have no faith in Ed Ray and am extremely pissed that OSU allows this mediocrity to go on while the school down the road is getting BCS bowl berths and NCAA tournaments. Very thankful for Pat Casey right now!!

    • Isn’t Kitzhaber technically the boss of the University Presidents? I could be way off but I thought I remember the issue at Oregon where the governor was involved.

    • Melody Rose is currently the interim chancellor of the OUS Board. But she would be both apathetic and unwilling to do anything about sports. That would be like asking a heart surgeon to prep and perform surgery on a hang nail.

Besides, she’s interim because the three biggest of the OUS institutions will be breaking off and forming independent boards in order to serve their individual needs. That will be the place to find people who are more of a mind to to care for all aspects of the school.

I would have said this if she wasn’t already nominated to be on the new board, but Pat Reser is the most likely to both care about sports at OSU and to hold any sway with OSU higher ups.

  3. what’s probably the worst is I don’t really even care that we lost. Or that we lost to Coppin State. Or that is was their first ever win against a Pac-12 school. I should be pissed. But I’m not. It’s beyond apathetic. I watched none of it and checked the score on ESPN.com a couple times and just laughed. I just don’t care anymore because I’ve seen this same story repeated for the last 20+ years. Here’s the problem. If CR is shown the door who is going to hire the next men’s bball coach? We all know the answer to that and it’s not something I even want to think about.

    • It’s time to can CR, swallow his buy out. Let an assistant coach this year on the cheap. Force BDC to retire and start fresh. We have shit now, the worse we can get is more shit.

    • I watched the game from start to finish. It was worse than the box score indicates. There were 4 air balls (2 by each team) in the first half! It was just a terrible game by both teams but somebody had to win. Brandt looked like he hadn’t reconditioned himself at all since his injury. The only bright spot was Roberto Nelson trying to put the team on his shoulders and win it by himself and he almost did.

  4. There was a big article in The Oregonian about Brandt’s return and how his loss was a primary factor in the poor season last year. Oops, I guess CR can’t use that one now. But wait…he’s still has the Collier/Moreland card to play. If there any f-ing accountability? Wasn’t BDC responsible for letting the Wagner debacle go on way too long?

    • Brandt would be the 7th man on most pac-12 rosters. I’m tired of hearing about him being mentioned as a game changer. He just isn’t.

Collier should be dominant, but he doesn’t play D and is lackadaisical. Moreland is a headcase, and in a bad, egotistical, distracting way.

      • Collier has regressed imo. He seemed to disappear during conference play last year. Quite honestly I though he would transfer. He did not seem happy

        • Did you notice how many shots Collier had blocked last year compared to his first two seasons? Either defenses figured him out or something happened….CR’s coaching, injuries..who knows, but he was not the same player last year.

          • Exactly. He was a beast in non conference play but then disappeared in most conference games. Like he had no confidence. Idk what it was either. But like I said I was surprised he stuck around. He was on my most likely to transfer list.

    • IMO, BDC should have had his ass fired after the Lavonda ordeal. Those girls and their parents went to him to complain and he practically shut the door in their faces. Jay John also had issues with his players that never made the press that were equally similar to the treatment that Lavonda gave her team and BDC shut his eyes to it.

      • Seriously, an empty Gil for the season opener. Empty USC game due to Friday start time. BDC is apparently unable to put his foot door on behalf of the university and turns into gumbo to please the tv people. A good AD wouldn’t waste attendance for TV, cause tv CAN budge a little too. And that’s just the last two games!

  5. I think the only way your voice is heard is by picketing the Administration Building with hand made signs calling for the removal of BDC and CR. You might actually get some TV time, too, with the local news picking up the story.

  6. On CR, I thought we would have an improved Basketball team, seeing how they traveled to play in Europe in the offseason and all, at least that was the reports at the time.

  7. My wife and I just got back from Gill and the Coppin State fiasco (my neighbor has season tickets but couldn’t make it tonight).

Coppin State was 8-24 last season and tonight was missing its best returning player (starting forward Michael Murray, who led last year’s CS team in scoring and rebounding). Coppin State was 0-16 against PAC 10/12 teams coming into tonight (including a 19-point loss to Cal two days ago). Coppin State hails from a conference (the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference or MEAC) that was 1-89 over the past two seasons against power conferences, before tonight.

Despite all this, and despite giving away size to the Beavers all over the floor, Coppin State led for most of the game — including the entire second half — and out-hustled and out-rebounded the Beavs most of the night. It seemed clear from the start that Coppin State wanted this game more than OSU did, and that’s how it played out.

The saddest thing about the game was that no one at Gill seemed particularly surprised or upset at any of this. Not the fans. Not the players. Not CR. That’s how low expectations — and standards — have now sunk for an OSU men’s basketball program that used to be great.

  8. Seattle’s coach is a possible CR replacement for next head coach. He has 100 times the energy and charisma of Robinson who looked mopey all game and half asleep. We can leave that up to the next AD but if a couple of our top picks can’t be secured we could do far worse. Believe this guy would have OSU in the NIT in year 1 or 2.

    • What exactly has Cameron Dollar accomplished at Seattle U? A winning record in his first year and that’s it. I’ll take a pass on him. How about OSU ponies up some cash to hire a real coach????

        • Yes. He beat OSU again the following season, but they need a proven winner. I’m not buying this crap that they can’t afford a decent coach. What OSU needs is an AD that cares about basketball, which is something that they haven’t had for awhile. Even Mitch Barnhart hired two bad coaches in McKay and John. If OSU had had that kind of AD, I believe that OSU would have recovered from the Jimmy Anderson fiasco. This downward spiral has only gotten worse because of the ADs making one bad hire after another.

    • CR is distracted because his health insurance got cancelled. Going to be really uncomfortable at the Thanksgiving table this year. Plus, sis won’t let him eat any sweets.

  9. Ben Howland should be given a call once BDC is gone. I hope there is picketing to remove BDC. Would make the drive down from Portland to join an effort if one is organized. This horror and embarassment has to come to an end!

      • If Ben Howland couldn’t get it doen at UCLA with all the inherent advantages they have, what would make you think he’d be successfull at OSU?

I understand anyone with a pulse would have more success than CR but we really shouldn’t be aiming for just an improvement on CR cause we could hire a rock and do that.

        • UCLA has either fired or ran every coach they’ve ever had out of there since Wooden, but I wouldn’t be against talking to him to gage his interest. Another name I am thinking of that may be Arizona’s former coach, Russ Pennell.

          • I would like to see OSU at least talk to Howland. After all, he stated publicly after Mike Rice Jr. was fired at Rutgers that he would be interested in going there. He also turned around a downtrodden program at Pitt, so he can build a program. I think Rutgers is a worse job than OSU right now. I do agree that no hire should be made by BDC, so can him before firing Robinson.

  10. Wow, even Lindsay is ready to be done with CR. She tweets in response to the question of why CR still has the job, “My take? Cause they don’t have the money to buy him out.”

  11. This is fucking ridiculous. Apparently it’s good to be the president’s brother-in-law.

In this example, just as in Sac State, EWU, etc., when you are getting beat by inferior athletes, you are getting out-coached.

And this opponent was without it’s most acclaimed player.

Agreed, BDC needs to go. The challenge will be great with his Parkinson’s disease – “how can we fire him? That would be cruel?”

    What is the MEAC anyway?

  12. If BDC goes, maybe they’ll get rid of the chainsaw!! Noticed on TV that the Beaver Dam section had T-shirts with the chainsaw on them. Who does the marketing department think we are? OSU doesn’t have an identity. Please bring back smiling Benny.

  13. We didn’t just lose to a no-name school from a no-name conference. They virtually wire-to-wired us!

Baseball is great, football is…Riley…and everything else is flat-out horrible.

OSU needs new leadership in the AD position.

  14. The most exciting part of the game last night was the remote control spaceship thing with a nose camera married to the Jumbo Tron that went out of control and crashed into the student section.

  15. There was a stretch In the middle of last night’s game where Coppin State was consistently beating OSU downcourt and getting fast-break layups while OSU, on the other end, was clanging long jumpers off the rim. I looked over to CR and the bench, expecting that the coaches — and players — would be extremely upset with the lazy, low-hustle, and flat-out stupid basketball being played by OSU. Nope.

We are only one game into the regular season, but I really wonder whether Craig is already giving up on this team, and whether the players are already giving up on Craig.

I also looked for BDC last night at Gill and didn’t see him. Last season, I went to a half-dozen men’s bball games, and saw BDC at most of them (my neighbor’s season tickets are close to where BDC usually sits). Will BDC be showing up at men’s bball games this season? Or will he be reluctant to do so, given the obvious and embarrassing problems with CR and the program?

One other thought. I wonder whether Ed Ray fears that firing CR would risk undercover retaliation from the White House (where CR’s mother, sister, nieces, and brother-in-law currently reside). OSU gets a lot of money — directly and indirectly — from the federal government. Given what has been going on in Washington lately, would it be crazy or paranoid for Ed Ray to worry at least a little about this?

  16. Love the quotes from CR in this Eggers article.

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/200706-for-beaver-basketball-another-unforgivable-loss

“Robinson seemed satisfied with the plan he prepared for his players, dissatisfied with their ability to implement it. The three things the Beavers didn’t want to do, he said, was turn the ball over, give up a lot of 3-pointers and let the Eagles get to the offensive boards.

Oregon State had only nine turnovers. Coppin State was 10 for 25 from 3-point range, a nine-point advantage in that department over the Beavers. And the Eagles snared 11 offensive rebounds, nine in the first half.

“I’m disappointed with the execution of our strategy,” Robinson said. “We wanted to go inside on those guys early and we just didn’t. Half our shots in the first half were 3’s. That’s not the formula for this team to win games.

“I chalk this up to completely not following the game plan. If we (follow it), this isn’t a close game.” “

      • I like how the 3 key areas Craig said the Beavers needed to avoid, were actually not that key to the game.

Don’t turn the ball over? Beavs turned it over only 9 times in the game.
        Don’t give up 3 pointers? Beavs allowed 10 for 25 from 3. 40% A good percentage, but 10 isn’t a huge number.
Don’t allow offensive rebounds? Beavs allowed 11. That’s a pretty average number of Offensive boards in a college game.

And these were Craigs keys to the game AFTER the game had already played out. He could have at least switched it up to make it look like he had a better game plan in place.

  17. Don’t let this little basketball loss, CR, BDC’s ineptitude, the new flat-rat logo and the chainsaw distract from the upcoming “debacle in the desert” on Saturday night.

Another red and gold team will work the Beavs like USC II. Watch Wanker’s defense grasp in desperation as they are slice and diced by powerful running backs. Watch Cooks run 30-40 sprints as the ball sometimes is thrown in his general direction. Watch Mannequin run around the backfield like a ruptured pelican desperately looking for an open receiver will Riley chews gum and grins like Forest Gump. Can’t wait until Saturday night! JB

PS: 6-6 gets a bid to the ADVOCARE100 Bowl.

  18. An Avocado Bowl would be awesome. I love guacamole. It would have to be held near San Diego, where over 60% of the US avocados are grown. They could do some cross marketing with the Fiesta Bowl. Who doesn’t like chips and guac? Genius idea Angry, even if you came across it accidentally.

    • Jack,
Yes, we get it, you are liberal and any other view must mean they are bigots… I really enjoy reading your thoughts on basketball, but you are obnoxious when it comes to politics.

We can agree on the basketball team stinking up the joint.
