Home Football Weber State and the OSU Offense

Weber State and the OSU Offense

265

Less than 10 days away, so it’s time to start discussing these guys. The only good mainstream preview I found was this. That makes it sound like they could be a decent team, but then I checked out the forums, and fans don’t sound optimistic.

Any idea how good or bad Weber State is? I know we’re all assuming a win, but has anyone actually looked at them?

I thought these comments from Sitake were interesting, and at the end we see Andersen say they’re putting Weber State stuff into practice. It’s nice to hear they’ll use five WR sets, since their WR corp is the best in the Pac-12 — Bolden, Villamin, Jarmon, Guyton, and Lucas. They can even go seven deep with Gilmore and Dockery completely serviceable players. WR is absolutely stacked.

I’m expecting Bolden and Villamin to be the main guys just by default, but Jarmon and Guyton have huge upside and could ultimately be better fits in this offense (dubious they’d jump Boldon or “Villytron”, though). Lucas has huge upside as well, but he probably won’t get as many snaps as the other four unless he breaks big gainers early in the year, and they simply can’t keep him off the field. Another possibility is using Lucas on kick/punt returns.

Some other guys I like on offense: the entire O-line (people are sleeping on them), Ryan Nall (needs to lose 10-15lbs, but I think he can do some damage as-is), Caleb Smith (this is his elusive breakout year), and Chris Brown. Brent VanderVeen and Deltron Sands are sleepers. I like Sands more than Haskins. Shane Wallen has looked pesky. I don’t expect a ton from him, but he could be a guy who is productive in a specific and limited role and get tough yardage. Zach Lucas and Blake Brandel are good looking OL backups. One final player I should mention is Noah Togiai. He looks fluid as a pass catcher, but with the TE depth I don’t know if he’ll factor in, but I like him.

I was also reading about the effects of time zone changes on the body (and how late afternoon is the ideal time to play sporting events), and it made me think the Michigan game will likely be a MI blowout. That thought will be revisited after I see how they perform vs Weber State.

  1. No reason why a Pac 12 team of any caliber should lose to a team like Weber State. I know it has happened and to this program as well, but it never should. This is a paycheck type game.

As to the time difference thing. Its all on coaching. Using the Seahawks as an example, they always struggled under Holmgren on the road in easter time zones. Pete Carroll comes in and they are capable of winning any game in any time zone. Its all coaching, knowing your talent and execution.

We will know a lot about this team after Weber State and Michigan (Meechicken?)

    • James was a threat on the fly sweep because he could read cuts like a RB… and finish runs like a RB… and block like a RB.

His very first run was a, “Who is that? That kid is spectacular!” moment. He ran that sweep to the right side and trucked one defender into the second. And then I wanted to see more.

  2. Weber St was like 5-7 last season. I’m thinking we win pretty handily (by 17 to 24 points). That’s not to say there won’t be mistakes, it’s just theirs’ will be more costly. Don’t count out RB Jaylynn Bailey! I seriously think he will be a contributor. Also, this staff can make adjustments, which is something Banker did NOT do against several teams.Rhamel Dockery will make a name for himself in the return game and as a WR. Lucas will make a name for himself in this game as well!

    Go Beavs!

  3. I know we have limited info, but I’m concerned about Isaac. Won’t surprise me to see him set out more than half the offensive plays.

Regardless of health/conditioning limitations, I hope we see several young guys get playing time. Noticed Drew Clarkson took some reps with the 1’s; he should be good in the future and will benefit from any minutes he gets this season.

    • Thanks for that link Angry, although I must admit I was concerned there a few times. Two early (great) drives and just 6 points only to be disappointed is all too familiar for this beaver fan. I’d forgotten how good the D was in that game.

    • God that was a great game! Sometimes, just to get the fire back, I watch the follow up, 2001 Fresno St game. It’s incredible how much talent was on that team. That was a rough season but the next season and the 2002 Fresno St game (where we killed them 59-19) is probably my favorite Beaver game. 2000 Civil War is a good one to watch too.

      Go Beavs!

PS- If anyone happens to have a copy of that 2002 Fresno St game, please let me know?!

    • Chad Johnson clearly dropped the ball before crossing the goal line on the first touchdown. Play begins at 52:16 in the video above. Just glad no one saw it and returned it like the duck$ did last year to Utah.

      • Yeah, I can’t believe Davies or any ND coaches didn’t see it and demand the refs huddle and get the call right. Surely one of the refs saw it?? It was so obvious on TV. I guess that’s why Davies got canned shortly after.

TJ got away with that fumble for a TD, too. Clearly down. Beavs got a lot of calls.

      • There was another td that shouldnt have counted and wouldnt have with instant replay. I think it was Q3, on a punt return. The OSU returner was stopped by ND, but the ball squirts out and another Beav grabs it and runs it into the endzone. Clearly OSU was down before the fumble, but the play stood.

They made such a huge detail about the penalties, but if it’s a bowl game and your team is rolling, who cares if they celebrate a little excessively? It’s a freaking bowl game. Let them have some fun.

        • It was TJ on a punt return…fumbled it forward right to a Beav. That’s what I mentioned above ^

I liked the lack of replay. The game moved fast and there wasn’t a lot of whining. It was more like “Okay that’s the call next play”. I found it refreshing to not have options. There’s some psychological phenomenon, I forget what it’s called, but it basically says when you have fewer options you’re less overwhelmed and have a more relaxing experience. I tend to agree. Even with things I do, like recording music, when I have 1 microphone with me it’s an easy decision, but if I have 10 microphones, I have to go through each one and figure out which sounds best. It stresses me out and I can’t get as much done. I find this true with replay. It’s just too much interference with the game. It’s even more noticeable in baseball.

Instead of replay, I’d like to see footballs and baseballs with built in lasers and then detectors all over the field to spot the ball. I’d rather have that than replay. Replay already feels dated to me and drags down the game.

          • I don’t like it either, but it would have helped Notre Dame that day for sure. I think also, that video had some dead ball time edited out which kept the pace seemingly quicker.

My god our defense flew to the ball back then. I was just amazed how quickly they closed in on the ball handler, and just relentlessly. Would live to see OSU get back to that level. Was that a Craig Bray defense?

          • Both presidents had a great first move. I don’t know how a coach on the NFL level couldn’t work that into secondary and further moves… except that one of them ended up with the Raiders… where speed goes to die.

  4. From the linked article above:

“That again raises the question: Why would Riley leave Oregon State to jump into this pressure cooker? The answer remains the same as above. He is a football coach. He is wired to prefer this. “First of all, it’s better to be at a place where there are great expectations,” Riley said. “What was neat about Oregon State is the expectations grew. When I went there in 1997, there were none. Nobody really cared.”

    At Nebraska, they care.”

He knew he could get away with being mediocre so he strived to be nothing more. What an asshole.

    • Also…

Riley had a nice little routine in Corvallis, Ore.

No fucking shit Sherlock. And who the hell abbreviates Oregon with “Ore.”? You’re talking about your coach who came from a place called Oregon State, as you mentioned in your first paragraph. And somehow you think you need to fuck up our existence?

      jk Nebra. dude. jk.

He has the potential to be extremely uncomfortable in Lincoln if he posts records similar to the one the Beavers posted (5-7) in his final season at Oregon State. And while the average person might consider that a reason to stay on the coast….

I blame you Pollyannas for this “what the holy hell fuck” moment. You are the average people. You are the average people. You are the average people. We’re the average people too.

    • “We weren’t good enough in the games that mattered,” Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst told reporters on the day he fired Pelini.

BAH HA HAH HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA… ha ha… HA… hah ha ha … hooooo boy… heh heh.

      Yeah.

      • “Riley and Langsdorf tried to wed the concepts that worked for them with the things they knew Armstrong did well. “

Concepts like: play action on 3rd and 18, save those timeouts, and “what’s a two minute drill?” ………….Those poor bastards!

        • Ha ha ha! Yes!!! oneoldbeav….I can’t believe how many play fakes they used on 3rd down and forever! And half the time Sean would just put the ball down and the back would go to the opposite side. Plus….if you’re running game is null and void, there’s no point in play action period! So much was wrong with that staff. Man I’m glad that’s not our headache anymore.

          Go Beavs!

      • Isn’t there a part of you that is appreciative of what Riley did at Oregon State? I get that he wasn’t able to accomplish much of anything his last 2 or 3 years, but he did play a huge role in turning the program around. Erickson played a role in that too, but few people would associate Oregon State with DE. Even if he is just a mediocre coach (which I don’t think he is), he was a mediocre coach willing to take over the program and turn it into something relevant when nobody else would.

A lot of you people need to calm the fuck down and give some credit where it’s due.

I am excited to have Andersen this year and see what he can do with the program, but I still recognize what Riley was able to do and hope he does well at Nebraska.

        • “Isn’t there a part of you that is appreciative of what Riley did at Oregon State?”

If you’re asking for the truth then here’s my response: Not really. Imo the Riley years were a waste of time.

“…he was a mediocre coach willing to take over the program and turn it into something relevant when nobody else would..”.

Please tell us who was interviewed for the job and who expressed interest. I was of the impression that Riley lobbied (begged) like crazy for the job.

Imo the OSU administration wanted Riley to change his coaching staff so Riley took the Nebraska offer and ran. Thank goodness both Riley and bobby are gone.

I think Andersen is an improvement but am not so sure about the new athletic director. Time will tell.

          • >Please tell us who was interviewed for the job and who expressed interest. I was of the impression that Riley lobbied (begged) like crazy for the job.

Riley did lobby like crazy. Other candidates that I heard of were Dan Hawkins and Rocky Long. So…we could have done worse than Riley. Hawkins would have sent us back to the stone age, just look what he did to Colorado, they still haven’t recovered. Long would have been okay.

        • No. Riley played very little in turning OSU around. Pettibone did more than he did. Kragthorpe did more than he did. What did he do?

Kragthorpe/Pettibone: west side and VFC… and no winning seasons
Riley: no winning seasons and ditching us
          DE: winning… Truax… east side… umm… winning
Riley2: taking over for a newly built program and making a bunch of excuses for why it can’t get any better than where he took it… and then it got worse… and ditching us again

By pure attrition, I guess we can give Riley cred for the new VFC plans. But it took how many years of him being here to do this? And how much of it is his plan anyway given that Steven Jackson gifted a huge chunk years ago just to make the top floor pretty? He got the east side gifted to him upon his return as the prodigal son. And he did nothing to implement a plan for phase 2… a plan in place and ready to go with even a smidge of effort from some worthy head man.

Do you really want us to give Riley his due? It might be about as glamorous as a puddle of mud when we decide to tell the truth. Look, he’s a nice guy. We get that. He’s a decent head coach on his best day. He’s a great offensive coordinator… now. He really does know football like a guru. If you talk to him about only that then you win for learning something. But it’s just as easy to sidetrack him by bringing up Jerry Jeff Walker. And he’ll avoid eye contact as he stops at a light and sees you across the intersection. In fact, I’ve seen him do some weird stuff while driving. But that’s something different.

Fact is, he was fairly paid, probably overpaid for what he did at OSU. And that’s considering he was winning slightly more than he was losing. His record and the recruiting struggles weren’t a derivative of OSU, Corvallis or even the Pollyannas (who don’t understand that his talk of expectations are aimed directly at them). They were what he could do as a coach.

It was a neat deal. If you want to leave it at that, then tell him to shut up. GA will then not need to respond just to defend his players. How neat will that be?

        • Riley stabilized things [at a mediocre level], but that’s about it, and that makes the large assumption that a different coach couldn’t have been doing more than him.

          • I wouldn’t go that far. Don’t conflate ignorance with intentional inability… whatever that is. He always remembers names and is sincerely good with kids. As many times as I was frustrated with unprepared teams, the only time I was really pissed at him was the time a TD was run down the home sideline and we saw him and Banker down there giggling at whatever pulled their socks up.

    • He decided to like the pressure at Nebraska because he has to like it. He doesn’t really like it, but he’s forced to because that’s the situation there.

    • “He knew he could get away with being mediocre so he strived to be nothing more. What an asshole.”

Post of the month right there, JD

  5. Twitter just got twisted. that guy who shot 2 newspeople during a live report today in Virginia, apparently was filming himself while he did the shooting, and then posted the video. disgruntled co-worker or something. The dark side of social media….yeeesh…..
His account has since been suspended

  6. Re the Fiesta bowl video: If you watched it did you happen to twig on the announcers making a big deal about Erickson saying that he wished he’d never left the head coaching job at Washington State?

So now when I see comments about Erickson saying that he wished he’d never left Oregon State I’ll know it’s just ‘ole Dennis spreading a line of bull shit.

  7. I think that the ability for the defense to practice against a spread offense consisting of the best offensive players (i.e. not the scout team) shouldn’t be underestimated. It’s possible that’s why the Beaver defense was so much better against pro-style or power run teams over the past few years. And for however lamentable Bankers defense was lately, it wasn’t more than a few years ago that his defenses were ranked pretty high.

    • Ranked at what?

His best year was when we had some bigs in the trench in 2006. He had a leftover and recruits who came in the “new coach wave of excitement” that is seen at most places. Since then, his defensive schemes have been deteriorating in terms of talent, and they have been exposed as highly “glitchy” things. Underthrow a ball for a PI call. Run your QB for a first down. Beat up on an undermanned D-line and never see support in the box. On and on and on.

At least he was awesome on the NFL level with no-talent guys like Seau and Harrison playing for him.

      • The Beavs national ranking in total defense from the year 2002 – 2012 are: 11, 7, 18, 84, 59, 8, 23, 46, 86, 84, 30. So, 5 of the first 7 years, they were top 25, and twice in the top 10. They were also wildly inconsistent and grew progressively worse as the “running quarterback syndrome” seemed to be a virus Banker couldn’t shake.

  8. 2015 Pac-12 preview coming up on ESPNU at 11. Tune in for a good laugh. I predict plenty of duck and USC taint being slobbed

  9. MR has a chance to be record breaker at dear old Nebraska U. They have won something like twenty seven season openers in a row. Can you imagine if he loses his opening game….at home, to BYU? There would be an epic meltdown and lots of cornfields going up in flames.
My brother is starting to get a little worried.

    • That BYU game is a toss up. Bronco hates OSU/Riley (Mamma Machado made a good point on her podcast that Riley didn’t retain Bronco on staff), which will make it interesting.

Nebraska has an easy schedule, but I still think Riley finds a way to lose 4 games. If he was in the other side of the division he might finish last.

      • Last? Nah that’s going way too far. Indiana, Maryland, and Rutgers would have a tough time even with lazy Riley at the helm. But Penn St, tOSU, MSU, and UM would almost never lose.

    • Yeah. They’ve gone 2-10 the last 3 seasons in a row which included a 70-7 trouncing by Utah in 2013.

Should be able to win without putting a pass in the air. Stand behind the line and just run forward.

      • Last year I witnessed a game where the Gophers beat San Jose State 24-7 and only completed one pass. Well, two if you count the interception. Crowd let out a groan when they finally completed one in the fourth. So it can happen. Backup QB ran for 161.

    • I don’t care if they’re awful or not. Last year PSU was awful and the led the Beavs at half-time. The year before, EWU was good, and they beat us at home. The year before that, PSU was awful and we beat them fairly easily, and the year before that Sac State was awful and we lost to them.

All big sky teams, and only 1 of those games could be categorized as a cakewalk. I’m not counting any games as an automatic win until I see our team play an actual game. Who knows, maybe Weber St has the next Vernon Adams Jr, and nobody knows it yet.

      • Yeah teams like that have a lot of JC guys and turnover year to year, so I don’t think past records tell us much. But yeah, based on past records they look awful. Ron McBride had them at 10 wins a few years ago. Man that guy was a good coach.

      • I was at all of those games. OSU was athletically superior in each one but ill-prepared (non-contact fall camp) and save a couple guys who always bring it (Poyer, B. Cooks, Doctor, Sir Isaac, Mannion) played a lazy brand of football with no passion. Walked in like they didn’t have to try and should coast to victory. They played down to the level of the competition and that’s on the coaching. I expect GA will have this team ready to compete week in and week out, no matter how over or under matched. It’s the minimum requirement I expect.

They may be a bit raw, but Riley left a lot of athletes behind. As fans I think it’s ok we assume they should beat them handily. However, I expect GA will make sure the players don’t go into the game with the fans mindset.

        • >I expect GA will have this team ready to compete week in and week out, no matter how over or under matched. It’s the minimum requirement I expect.

This is my thought exactly. If they show up and play with some passion, we’ll win a few games and we’ll improve as the season progresses. I’ll be satisfied with that.

I think we’ve got some talent, despite what many in the media want to tell us.

          • Agreed “Whatever”. I realize that wins are going to be hard to come by this season but what I’m most excited about is we will be competitive again. This team will fight and take the “blue collar” approach that an underdog needs to succeed. I think that we will keep every game close and like I have said previously, experience some heartbreak along with some surprises. Should be fun!

            Go Beavs!

          • GA did lay a couple turds at Wisconsin so don’t go overboard on the always ready to play card.
I think it will be much better than Saint Mike, however.

        • Agreed Dwill03

It’s as if those Beaver teams that lost to the two FCS schools were waiting for something to just ‘happen’ rather than making something happen. That was absolutely ill preparedness on behalf of the coaching staff 100%. I think the Beavs will be fired up for the Weber St game and ACTIVELY making plays! Should be fun.

          Go Beavs!

  10. Beaverblazer

Although I agree in “never underestimating any opponent” as a mindset. We do have to realize that this staff has different philosophies about everything from game management to adjustments because they will actually adjust (ie-Vernon Adams and our defense). I can’t see this staff continually allowing big plays because of poor execution, bad scheme/playcalling, laziness or even A very skilled player. Hopefully players that are giving up or just not getting it done will be replaced. And if something isn’t working, adjustments will be made. Not to mention, I think GA and staff will properly utilize our talent better in all phases of the game (O, D, SP Teams).

    Go Beavs!

    • I haven’t seen this staff coach a game yet, so I’m reserving judgement. I do know GA was head coach when Wisconsin got blasted by Ohio St last year something like 59-0. That’s his most recent game and it doesn’t exactly scream of game management or adjustments.

      http://espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=400609096

Weber State and Ohio State are obviously different animals, but….. 59-0?

      • To be fair here, Ohio State had momentum by season’s end and it looks like GA had probably already made his mind up that he was sick of Alvarez and his micromanagement. If you want to get a true picture of his coaching “management” and “adjustments” post his career stats! One game does not a career make.

        Go Beavs!

        • The Northwestern game is probably the better example last year. The lynch mobs were ready to string up HCGA after that one.

        • Not worth my time to compile years of game stats, but he did have some bad games while at Utah St as well. He even had some games where the team played great for 3 quarters, but gave up huge leads in the 4th. (Auburn and Louisiana Tech come to mind, even though they ended up winning LA Tech)

From the little I’ve seen, his teams came out with their hair on fire, but fizzled out before the end of the game.

I’m not arguing that we shouldn’t expect a Weber St win, I’m just saying I wouldn’t be surprised if is somewhat close.

          • That’s coaching sometimes. You can prepare till the cows come home. Your players can have the fire and determination along with being well prepared but a few let downs here and there are going to happen. It’s not because the coaching staff isn’t doing their job, the players have some accountability too. Sometimes teams don’t know how to finish a game off (with a lead). And obviously enough, that experience comes from winning games. So I can see why Utah St. won some/lost some in those tight games. If you look at GA’s record against FCS teams, those games aren’t close. You have to look at the majority of games to get the real picture. Looking at a few games and trying to gather a trend from that is not realistic. Trust me, I’d be willing to bet we win by at least 17. That’s not huge but that is the least! Oregon State is going to make some mistakes, no doubt (a fumble on exchange, maybe a blown coverage or two, etc.) but they wont result in scores for Weber St. IMO. Weber St. on the other hand is going to make more mistakes and I think the Beavs will capitalize with TDs (we might have a TD in the return games, pick six, scoop and score) or something. I feel the offense will have a few huge plays thanks to the running game and we might get a couple of big plays on YAC from the receivers. I’m going to wait until next week to make my score prediction but this will be a good tune up game. As always; Win the battle at the LOS (both sides of the ball), Win the turnover battle and limit penalties.

            Go Beavs!

          • Sometimes the team or a key player has a rough night before the game, too. For example, half the Wolverine squad were supposedly stoned before losing to App. State. I’m sure there’s late night drinking, partying, girls, illness, minor injury, or just dudes who can’t sleep because they’re anxious to get up and play. Combined with traveling and such, there are bound to be head scratching loses each year. We live in a bubble as fans where we just assume if they’re on the field they had a great night and are 100% healthy and ready to go.

Check out the three years at Utah St (arguably one of the worst teams in the FBS at the time GA took them over) and how competitive they were with some quality opponents. Sure they had some let downs against a couple of teams but they were pretty competitive (per scores/stats). And when you take into consideration (IMO we have more talent all around than Utah St had on those teams) I think we will probably be more successful than many people think. I still believe 4-8 wins, with a lot of ‘what ifs’ in the picture. But full strength. We’ll be pretty good.

        Go Beavs!

        • In fact when you look at the 2011 Utah State season, they were on the cusp of being possibly 11-1 or maybe even undefeated with how close all of those games were. Obviously the wins could have gone another way as well, but they were competitive in every game (including @ Auburn). I think our season could very well turn out similar to that season and has some parallels ; close scores on W’s and L’s, 7 wins, play Weber St and go to a tough environment to play early(Michigan-Auburn). We’ll see.

          Go Beavs!

        • Still, and as you have pointed out yourself, the schedule is tougher than that. Being in games and winning games are two different things. And even talent can’t get over system changes sometimes.

If we had a system in place for years and a good coach and this schedule, I would expect nine or ten wins. Riley actually left us with some great, albeit inexperienced, talent. As is, they could win three games on their own. With good coaching, they could double that.

Riley would pull a two win season out of this. I think GA will do a little better.

  11. http://espn.go.com/blog/pac12/post/_/id/90134/pac-12-preseason-quarterback-rankings

Agree with most of the ranks but I think UCLA has a worse situation than shown. In fact, I’m not going to say that we’re better but it might be a tie between us, Washington and UCLA on QB rankings (as of right now). The one key is that UCLA has some studs supporting their QB but I could see them having another underachieving season. I also think Oregon is going to have some inconsistencies in production at QB (more TOs by the QB, not as many key plays to win games-like Mariota had, the leadership issue… will guys up and follow a new transfer or even the guy that the coaches had so little trust in, that they brought in the transfer?). Lots of questions at QB in our conference. That’s good for us.

    Go Beavs!

    • And bring back Bernice!

I read back when OSU signed their most recent “rebeav” contract with Nike, it was supposed to include a redesign of the Benny costume, but from what I can tell, he hasn’t changed in years.

        • I don’t think we can blame demon lollipop-head Benny on Nike. We can blame them for making crap products and being one of the most grievous actors in Asian labor markets over the last 30 years. But they can sell the crap out of their crap to the point someone will try and convince me that even one thing they pay foreign middlemen to drive children like cattle in order to manufacture really really crappy products that an increasingly stupid America accepts because Wal-Mart is where they get their fashion ideas….

Sorry… I don’t even remember when demon lollipop-head Benny came into existence. I know the beavershark started a couple years ago and would actually be cool if allowed to be so (ahem… no borders). I know the No Dinx poop smear was just horrible. I’m not sure how much Barnhart was paid to look at his shoe laces for that decision. If he would have looked the other way, he still would have seen that ugly.

I think the benny in that pic is still kicking around Gill somewhere.

          • We can blame the angry rat on the idea that the rebranding would cause all of us to buy new licensed swag at new high dollar pricing. And then we got a re rebrand. But luckily, someone figured out that original fans would also buy classic Benny swag, and so that’s now also available, except at a super premium since it’s the best. Classic Benny swag is the only swag I buy for myself and family anymore.

          • I bought an American made lid (black) and had a local shop embroider the new logo Beavblazer style. A couple friends requested the same and are getting theirs soon. Cost is less. Quality is not even a comparison.

            But plastic made in China is what’s hep… sorry… hip… sorry… cool… sorry… swag now.

          • Beavblazer style is best of new logo. But my most prized gear is my parents 60’s era Benny stuffs. My grandfather’s stuff is considered family heirlooms. Not much remains from my great grandparents’ days.

    • Honestly, and I’m not being argumentative, Benny looks fine. I mean isn’t mascots for kids? That would be last on my agenda if I worked for the AD.

I would be more focused on a mixture of advertisements, and Beaver photos/advertising looking cool in the stadium. I would be trying to wrap the upper deck(bottom that’s exposed concrete) with a mixture of advertisements and/or something that looks better. Maybe a sign like this is Beaver Nation, or something that seems to unite the upper deck area.

I hope when/if the new side could have a standing room area only that would morrow the student section.

          • Goofy, sure. Could be better, probably. But who gives a shit about mascots. We need to start playing games before this turns into a debate on the cheerleaders outfit

          • Fuckin idiot. I’m a diehard Beaver fan today because of my interactions with Benny and Bernice as a kid in the empty stadium days of Avezano, kragthorpe and pettibone. We soo need our classic mascots back. Its how you retain the youth, who the. grow up and believe in and love the school. Product branding. My niece and nephew have no attachment to our angry rat looking mascot. The duck is wiping our ass in the mascot department, special thanks to Nike and idiots like you that are allowing that to happen. Mascots help the local future. You apprantely can’t see the future cause your giant ass is in the way. Fuck you

          • Now now… they know not what they speak of. Yes, Donald Duck will win any kid’s heart when thrown out there against demon lollipop-head Benny. Then again, Akron’s mascot is better than demon lollipop-head Benny.

What does a kangaroo have to do with a zipper? Can anyone answer that question?

Neat deal: I’m related to the guy who made Zippy a roo. Okay… maybe not a neat deal.

          • Numbers you are spot on! It is about getting the kids attached to the mascot and the school.
For all the stupid things they do at the U of Minnesoata, the use and promotion of Goldy the Gopher is really fantastic.
Goldy Gopher is the mascot for the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus and the associated sports teams, known as the Golden Gophers, as well as the defending UCA Mascot National Champion.

          • Pussy. I love the mascot, wha wha. Seriously sounds like a little bitch in this post. Maybe you nieces and nephews like the duck because they were in 2 nation championships the past 4-5 years dip shit. Eat shit and die please

          • The duck is winning in attracting the kids, but not our kids, we trace 6 generations back to Corvallis College. Classic Benny has incredible value to our school. Use him.

    • That track 2nd phase with grandstands will be moving along. Men’s track will be officially back by 2018 is my bet. 2-3 extra million for each team to start and should only go up from there. We also knocked the SEC off Channel 612. They now get 611 which doesn’t have the same ring to it for the Pac-12.

  12. One week from tonight my butt will be in our seats watching the #2 team in the country take on my Gophers. Even though we will almost certainly lose, it sure is a lot more fun than trying to get amped up for Directional State U.

  13. Some summer league baseball updates – new recruits played really well.

    – Cadyn Grenier – hit .329 with 13 doubles, 3 triples and 3 HRs. Pretty good stat line with a lot of extra base hits. Led Bend team to WCB title.
    – Nick Madrigal – hit .303, 9 doubles and 2 triples. 40 steals in 43 games.
    – Christian Donahue – hit .285 with 7 doubles and 2 HRs.
    – Billy King – hit .336.
    – Gretler – hit .236
    – Nobach – hit .257
    – Hamilton – hit .193 in Cape Cod. By far much tougher than the WCB league.
    – Ice – hit .240 in Cape Cod.

Couldn’t really find anyone else easily.

I am predicting that Grenier will take 3rd base and Madrigal 2nd base. They lived up to their billings in the summer and showed a lot of good hitting with wood bats. Donahue will be the odd man out unless Morrison isn’t fully recovered from his injury. Lots of young talent that can make a serious impact next year.

  14. GA saying Lucas, Sands, Collins are the true frosh who will play this year for sure. After that, Togiai is on pace to earning reps, and he’d like to keep Irvine and Moore he’d like to keep a redshirt on unless absolutely needed.

    • Completely different — and in a good way.

Pure speculation, but guessing that the coaches talked to Seth, and suggested that “SethTheGreat” start talking and thinking more about the team, and less about himself. Hope this new Seth is here to stay….

      • I’m not sure, but he was awful, then I wrote articles about it and sent them to him, and now he seems better. So maybe? I have a theory that a guy who is self-absorbed can’t help but read articles about him…so I’d lean yes.

But more importantly, the media should be patting him on the back for being a better teammate like he is in this interview, rather than patting him on the back for unnecessary hurdles and selfish/immature play. Good job, StS.

        • If anyone has watched Hard Knocks this year, Bill O’Brien gave some decent advice to players on how to interact with the media.

“Remember guys, they have a job to do. We’re very respectful of their job. They’re a conduit to the fans. In the end you’re in the control of the interview.”

“If you’re asked a question and you really don’t understand the question or you really don’t want to answer the question, here’s some suggestions…’I’m working hard.’ ‘I’m trying to be a good teammate.’ ‘I’m trying to go out there every day and do my job.’ ‘I’m taking it one day at a time.’
“Don’t comment on other players…When you talk to the media, you just worry about speaking for yourself.”

          • Great show. Great Coach. It’s a shame he’s stuck with two crappy QBs and that Foster went down. He’s a much better coach than what their record will likely reflect.

  15. Yes Angry, I’m sure it was you and your girlfriend who fixed this kids attitude LOLOLOL. Im starting to wonder who’s really the headcase in this situation…

      • I’m not saying you said it. I’m just reacting to the fact that you seem to be seriously considering the possibility that he read your blog posts and that’s what got through to him. Do you really think that he would dismiss the coaches’ decision as “whatever” but then go on the Internet, read a couple blog posts, and decide “Whoa! I really got some maturing to do!”

Realistically he’s maturing like just about every other 18 year old that’s ever lived and, as mentioned before, is getting more comfortable in front of a camera. Who knows, maybe the coaches talked to him. I personally think that the odds of him reading anything you’ve written at all are slim to none and the odds of him reading anything you’ve written AND taking that to heart are even less.

  16. He’s anchoring the 2nd line, there will be lots of rotation. My guessis something similar to hockey where they don’t put all 3 of the best guys on one line, gotta spread em out and keep fresh guys coming in.
