Spring Football Thread

189

To be honest, I haven’t followed much spring ball. Been busy with personal stuff, and what time I can dedicate to sports was spent watching the women and some baseball. So, for one, I ask you guys to fill me in so I can catch up without having to read all the articles, and secondly, discuss any new developments here. All I’ve heard so far is Andersen is working them hard, a few guys transferred…not much else. Also feel free to go off topic without the courtesy of an “OT” necessary in this thread.

  1. To me there hasn’t been a lot of news of consequence so far other than cook and nall. The btd guy said that garretson looks slow and small but also said elu aydon played at ilb which im sure can’t be right. I think we’ll have to wait until the next spring game to really get an idea of where they’re at but more so it will be in the fall when key recruits show up.

    • Aw shucks, I don’t believe in stars. I believe in nurturing projects. You teach the kids for a few years take your lumps in the L column, and when they’re ready to contribute, they transfer to Alabama. It’s a neat deal, roll tide! Uh, I mean go big red!

      (gbr hashtag)

    • Hope his lofty ranking will give him the confidence to call timeouts, otherwise there’ll be some 5* disappointment….”WTF?!? What was Riley thinking?!?”

    • No.

She called out the FF fans for not supporting the underdog. It’s an unrealistic idea given the mortality everyone gets to understand as they watch UCONN play. And Auriema scolded well when he pretty much told people if they don’t like it, get better.

        • Meaning no disrespect to the women at all, they had a great season. But after the first few minutes it was obvious they were not going to win. I was hoping that they could keep the score “respectable”. Maybe it was – the way UConn plays.

    • Not the way I read (and heard) it.
I’m no fan of Lindsay, but she was commenting on the lack of support for the Beavs from fans of everyone other than UConn. Even mentioned that many Notre Dame and S.Carolina fans were in attendance and she expected them, along with Syracuse fans to support the Beavs AGAINST UConn.

She also mentioned that OSU “will be back” and that, “they are so much better than they showed”

    • Must admit, I didnt actually read the story. Saw the headline and hiped the rest of you would read it for me. Thanks!

  2. OT: What the heck is with the NCAA’s obsession with scheduling championship games on Mondays? First the college football championship, now college basketball’s championship. It’s almost like they don’t want people to watch their sporting events.

  3. OH CRAP! Guess who was at practice today?
Andersen tweets, “Great to have Super Bowl Panther @Mremmers74 at practice today!”

      • Yeah but Beaver fans are always delusionally hopeful.

It would be nice to hear some players have improved and/or are standing out.

        • I’m going to the Gopher spring game on Sat. Will be able to provide a way too early preview of Rodent Bowl I from the land rodent perspective.

        • I would say take everything with a lot of skepticism. Guys will look good but look who they are going up against. Not a great gauge. Really won’t know anything about this team until the first game.

    • Right now I’m kinda buzzed out which might be because of things like the heir apparent at QB is rumored to be short, slow and has bad mechanics. The talent/skill in the trenches is undetermined, the entire D is questionable and there might be not much depth in the receiving corp.

Recruiting seems to have taken a hit after KS left. The injuries in the baseball team are discouraging. WT has checked out at least one other job opening. And lastly the women’s basketball team didn’t just get beat………

      snip
UConn’s 29-point margin of victory was the second largest in a game in women’s Final Four history and the largest margin in a national semifinal game:
      snip

Buzz? With that kind of news what’s there not to buzz?

  4. Anybody going to the open scrimmage this weekend or the Spring game next week?
I think both are being played up in Hillsboro because of the VTV construction.
Seems like having the Spring game offsite might make it harder to sell the program since kids wont be visiting campus when attending the game.

    • The scrimmage is in Hillsboro this weekend but the Spring Game is going to be in Corvallis according to the schedule.

I think it’s a good idea to have in the Portland area… a lot of Beaver alumni in the area plus kids get exposure to the Beavs. I’ll be going for sure.

      • Thanks for the correction. I see where i got my wires crossed. Originally the spring game was to be part of the DamCity showcase event in Hillsboro, but they changed it to a scrimmage and pushed the spring game out a week.

Still cant tell if the dam city scrimmge is free? Or if you need a baseball or bbq ticket to just watch the scrimmage? Bbq tickets are apparently sold out. I need more info!

        • Oregon State Athletics invites you to full day of fun in Hillsboro Saturday, April 9 that includes a free football practice/scrimmage, the nationally ranked baseball team in action and a barbecue among other fan-friendly activities.

The football team will hold its first scrimmage of the spring practice session beginning at 11 a.m. at Hillsboro Stadium followed by OSU’s currently ranked No. 3 baseball team hosting Central Arkansas at Ron Tonkin Field at 2:30 p.m

The football scrimmage, is expected to conclude at approximately 1:30 p.m., is followed with a barbecue on the concourse outside the stadium. Head football coach Gary Andersen and several assistant coaches will headline the event with discussions about the team heading into the 2016 season. Cost to attend the barbecue is $15 for adults and $10 for children 12-under with registration in advance required.

  5. I am curious to know if SilverStream or others corroborate the concerns about Garretson (poor throwing mechanics, etc.).

Perhaps the fall, with an infusion of new talent, will create more buzz. So far, its just the holdovers from Riley, Nall confirming he’s big and fast, and questions about Garretson.

    • I have some video from last year’s spring game when Garretson was running the team. Will have to dig it up later today to take a look. The way I remember it, he definitely seemed on the short side, but the offense looked by far the most under control with him running it vs Collins/Mitchell/McMaryion the same day.

Wasn’t blown away by what I saw, but it looked more like a football team when he was in there.

      • That’s accurate. I think he’ll be effective yet unorthodox. Might throw some balls directly into the ground for no reason. For whatever reason Garretson was doing this in practice last year.

We don’t need a prototypical pocket passer, just an effective QB. Two different things.

      • Doesn’t look that bad. I’d like a little more arm strength and zip on the ball at times. It seem like the receivers will have to perform better than they have recently in terms of getting separation, adjusting, coming back, YAC. Maybe Hernandez and an improved Lucas…

        • If a team had a strong run game to keep a defense honest everything he did on that video would be sufficient to keep them I’m most games.

The lack of hurdles is definitely an area of concern. :)

      • Reminds me of Johnathan Smith with the accuracy but with better mobility. Garretson decision making gonna be worth another 2-3 added wins. Beavs get to 5 wins….if he is the QB.

      • I am not that good at analyzing film, and it looks to me like he never moves from his first read. He appears to be constantly staring down his target. Admittedly, I only watched the first 2 1/2 minutes.

      • Jury is still out on Garretson. That video didn’t sell me on his throwing ability at all, though it did make me more optimistic about his running. I saw some wobbly passes, mediocre timing with receivers and some accuracy issues. I think that our offense is going to have to live off the run this year while everyone continues to gel. I hope the big boys up front show some serious improvements at blocking.

        • He’s a play action QB who can drop it in the bucket. His quick hits will be dependent on how well the O-line blocks. They will be more effective when they concentrate on the run first.

          Run the damn ball.

  6. The surprising thing for me is no mention of Kearsly in the Oline discussion. I thought in the preview for this year, after the annual loss in the CW, he was mentioned as a virtual lock to start at center.
Now uncle Leo is the man. Anybody know why he is MIA?

    • I think it was in the 5th practice report where they said Kearsley was back out there after an injury taking reps with the 1st team. I really don’t know who most likely the starter right now.

      • Uncle Leo or Kearsley? Bears watching, if the trenches aren’t getting the job done it will be hard to see even three wins this season. If they are, and the OC committee schemes to the strength of players, then I could see five or more wins. Run……The……..Ball

UPDATE: Gina is back on the job and reports from today’s (#6) practice that uncle Leo was not seen and that Kearsley was the first string center.
Noteworthy: Phillip Napoleon recovered TWO FUMBLES in 10 minutes….no mention of who fumbled.

  7. Back to basketball, I was curious to see how Villanova built their team to win a title vs the “power conference” teams. They beat 5 power conference teams during their run.

And it’s pretty easy to see why they are so good. Of the 8 players who saw action last night, 7 were top 100 recruits in their class.

They shoot extremely well from the FT line. 78% as a team. Multiple guys over 80%. Shoot better than average from the field at 46.7%. The rest of their metrics are pretty average. About the same as the Beavs.

If the Beavs had those shooting rates, they would have added over 5 points a game.

So my thoughts are that for the Beavs to be a consistent contender in conference and postseason, they’ll need to land top recruits year after year. Paired with a coach like Tinkle, deep tourney runs wouldn’t be out of the question.

    • “…they’ll need to land top recruits year after year…”

Uhhh it would appear that you’ve missed the memo which informed us that the number of stars don’t matter. Oh wait, that’s football.

    • Whomever coaches their center did a great job. That kid had fantasict footwork and beautiful low post moves you rarely see these days. That team could also play some D.

    • Nova is in a power conference in basketball. If you had been following mens basketball the last 50 years you would know that. Google is a wonderful tool use it before you post ignorant drivel. Easy to recruit to a big 5 in Philly.

  8. Article on Cook, and the improving depth in the Beavers RB stable. I like Cook’s attitude:

“During a year that had been defined by “what if” moments, Tim Cook watched Nall break away on one of his 19 carries for a career-high 174 yards and could not help but think about the opportunities that could have been.

“I was looking at him during that game and I was like, ‘That could be me,'” said Cook, who missed his first season at Oregon State with an injury. “‘I could probably be a little tenth of a second faster and I could probably do it a little better.’ But he was doing his job and I’m happy for him. Hopefully next time it will be me.”

The camaraderie is also great to hear.

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2016/04/after_year_out_tim_cook_joins.html#incart_river_index

It looks like OSU is developing its deepest and biggest backfield in years. Throw in Lucas as a change-of-pace, this may be OSU’s deepest backfield? Does another come to mind to anyone?

    • I’d still like to see Cook, White, et al. take care of the RB position and move Nall to LB. Too much talent for that spot and LB appears to be lacking talent/depth.

That’s unless the rumor/misprint about Aydon playing LB is actually happening. Could they be thinking about a 2-5-4 alignment with Aydon being in the middle of the 5 LB’ers? Doubtful but………

For angry’s sake I’m trying to get buzzed up. And don’t be saying anything about buzzing off.

  9. Uh oh. Nebraska needs a WBB coach. Sounds like our own Lavonda Wagner.

Lincoln Journal Star – 1 hour ago

    • Yeah, that’s the report I was referencing above; where uncle Leo was a no-show and Napoleon recovered two fumbles.

Good to have Gina back (eventhough there was a recent report that she was seen waiting for a midnight pizza with Schnell, hope Gina didn’t loose an arm in that one!).

  10. Loser rodents.
Athlon: Power Five Conference Teams Under-Performing on the 2017 Recruiting Trail

End of the Line Rutgers (2), Louisville (1), Purdue (1), Oregon State (1), Vanderbilt (0), and Minnesota (0) are each off to slow starts, especially when you compare them to Kansas. The Jayhawks, who have not had a winning season since Mark Mangino was stomping the sidelines in 2008, has four verbal commitments. Making matters worse, second-year head coach David Beaty went 0-12 in 2015. What’s the excuse for the other under-performers?

A pass can be given to Oregon State, Vanderbilt and Minnesota, to a certain extent, but the states of New Jersey and Kentucky produce a lot of great talent every year. Kentucky even borders seven states, which should make for an easier pitch to out-of-state kids. So what gives Bobby Petrino?

Minnesota has no other in-state rival, making this a bitter pill for Golden Gopher fans. Oregon State has big brother Oregon to compete against plus any other Pac-12 school that might want the upper-crust talent within the state. Vanderbilt had an easier time recruiting with James Franklin calling the shots. Recruiting under Derek Mason has dropped off, as he’s been unable to sell an academics-first program in the SEC the way he could at Stanford. For the fan bases of the affected, time will tell if the coaching staffs needing help can sell your team over a regional rival.

Great coaching is only great with the right players to run the system, making recruiting an all too important part of college football.

    http://athlonsports.com/college-foot…cruiting-trail

    Go Gophers!!

    • He is a great kid and has only been playing football for one year. If he redshirted, coach tinkle could put him on As a walk on. He won 4 straight state titles at west linn.

    • Hope he doesn’t flip again….it sounds like in addition to OSU’s need and his opportunity for playing time, he also felt an implied need to strike out on his own. I may be reading that into his statements and be wrong, but if that is part of the reason, I really respect that.

“”It was very difficult. It was hard to walk away. It was a dream situation, being with my two best friends – La’Mar (Winston), who I’d be rooming with, and Payton (Pritchard) living in the same building,” he said. “It was hard to walk away from that. That’s kind of what led me to choose Oregon State. If I was truly willing to give that up, then Oregon State was the right fit. It was right, for myself, to take the opportunity.”

It may also portend well for Hall’s abilities as a recruiter. Get him back to the phones…

  11. A rumor of a potential home and home basketball series between the wet and dry rodents is floating around in the Twin Cities. Any rumors in Corvallis? Supposed to be next year.

    • Haven’t heard anything, but that sounds extremely fun. I’m very much looking forward to the football HnH, so a basketball series would be just as fun to me. I’d also like to see them in baseball, wrestling, women’s basketball, gymnastics, and softball too.

    • It’s right too. I think at the end of the year, we would beat every team except UConn. This was a special year and I feel honored that I was in the building for all of their home games except the NCAAT games.

      • Are we talking bear wrestling?

I saw the movie. Dude wasn’t wearing pre-teen Asian slave produced swag wit da swoosh.

        Sorry… that was revenant.

Carry on being relevant in the downfall of a moral society.

      • ** (in relevant sports)***
*** whatever some dumbass bandwagon duck fan deems relevant.

By the way track is not relevant……what championships do you have now? Oh baseba….footba…..basketba.. that’s right you don’t have any championships in relevant sports.

    • You can recruit white players from the northwest to Corvallis. Works for great for women’s sports wrestling and baseball where roughly top 200 players never set foot on campus.

      • Yes that is correct. Only white kids from Goshen want to come to Corvallis. Good thing 4J produces so many local white powerhouses like Gary Payton, AC Green, Brandin Cooks, Marcus Wheaton, Steven Jackson…

        • I think what he’s trying to say is that in football, top 200 kids don’t give us a shrug. I don’t think it’s a valid argument or all the reasons given over the last several years. It’s a symptom of poor recruiting and a fan base who was fine with a “more with less” narrative. It’s not a causal factor in them not giving us a second look. Gee golly told us many times that when a pretty girl said no the first time, he would go look elsewhere.

    • For you, A@A, it probably is a big day, relatively speaking.

      For me?

      Not so much.

I guess it depends on which song I choose to listen to first after lunch. That might make it all “big” like you say.

      Again, probably not.

And thanks again, Angry@angry, for letting me crawl out of your crotch. That had to be a big day for you too. I guess it didn’t help that I crawled out sideways. But that’s par for the course with you.

  12. OT but we’re at a slow spot.

I’m at the gym yesterday, new guy there. He does a complete workout that would put a D1 athlete to shame. Bench press in excess of 300lbs, flys, incline presses, leg press etc.

As we’re leaving I notice he hops into a pickup truck 10 feet from the door utilizing his “handicapped” parking tag. Wow!

  13. 5. Andersen was again asked about the offseason defections, with tight and and former quarterback Brent VanderVeen leaving the program last week to go along with 2015 contributors like Seth Collins, Justin Strong and Rommel Mageo. Here’s his full up-front, thorough answer:

“I’m there for them, and they know that. There’s not one of those kids where I stick my nose in the air and say, ‘Don’t ever talk to me again.’ I don’t delete their number from my phone. I want kids to be where they want to be. If there’s a different opportunity for kids as they go through, if they make a decision — whether I agree or disagree — it doesn’t mean I hate. And I never will. I’ll support them as they go through those times.

“It is a transition, and we are going to be who we are. You’ve got to hold yourself accountable to a high level. You have to understand you’re going to be forced to compete every day. These kids understand that we will work every single day to out-recruit you. That’s not because we don’t like you. It’s because we’re trying to get the best players on the field and we’re asking you to grow and develop every single day. Some kids can accept that. Some kids take exception to that. And if you don’t want to live in our environment, it doesn’t matter who you are, then it’s not the right place for you.”

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2016/04/gary_andersen_still_looking_fo.html#incart_river_home

    • What is to be made of Seth’s repeated appearance at practice? And, Andersen’s apparent acceptance of this?

Per Gina today: “Former Beavers quarterback/receiver Seth Collins attended practice but left before the workout concluded. He was also at Saturday’s open workout. ” Danny previously reported both Seth and Justin Strong were on hand for Saturday’s practice.

      • He was working on his hurdling. I wonder if he is having second thoughts/ buyers remorse?
He will when he gets to DeKalb. Hopefully he likes looking at cornfields.

      • I thinks it’s very strange they continue to show up and frankly, don’t think it’s good for the other players still on the team. Allows for departed players the potential to rub their negative attitude towards OSU football onto existing players. You broke up with us, please move on and best of luck.

    • Pretty disappointing if he’s still looking for playmakers. If it’s not apparent now, it probably won’t be when the season starts.

      • I think that’s just his way of challenging guys to step up. Let’s face it: there aren’t many proven commodities on the roster at this point.

The other option is saying “this is going to be Darrel’s team” or “this is going to be Jordan’s team” and relegating other guys to less important roles before fall practice even starts.

  14. What would be the problem with it? The kid was popular with his teammates, and likes football. And Andersen has continued to take the high road saying he supports kids even after they leave.

    • Wait… you make sense.

Nothing about a repeated appearance meaning something about how oob is saying he’s a better football coach than Nick Saban, and, by your logic, a better hairdresser than Oprah?

You’re not A@A. Who are you?

    • Where did I write I had a problem with it?

I love GA’s quote that we’re going to out recruit our own players. It means your playing time is not safe. It’s up to you to earn PT

      • I actually never said that you said you had a problem with it. One old Beav said “what is to be made” of it…. I just replied that there’s no problem with it. It’s encouraging actually. Kids leave with no hard feelings and still have love for the program.

Actually I think the fact that Seth is even still in school proves he’s more mature than many gave him credit for.

  15. Interesting rule change by the NCAA today.

    https://twitter.com/AndrewNemec/status/718482251756003328

basically, theyre banning Satellite camps and practices and are not allowing coaches to work at off site camps hosted by other organizations. Havent had a chance to read into it yet, but our coaches have held off site camps over the past year all over the country, and telly lockette has worked offsite at Georgia’s camp last year. Sounds like now, the only way a recruit can meet up with our coaches in a camp setting is if they fly to Corvallis on their own dime.

    • I’m sure that was put in place by the schools in recruiting hotbeds who don’t want teams coming into their turf. Sad.

Those teams already have a huge advantage, and this was one way around that. Good job, NCAA.

      • Yep, SEC and ACC were the main conferences in favor of change.

Oregon could still benefit too, because they can still host the opening camp as long as their coaches arent involved, but this at least gets the recruits onto their campus for a tour of the facilities. OSU could do the same and host a large camp, but they dont have that tyoe of corporate sponsorship like a Nike brings

        • It’s a distraction anyway. The real issues are oversigning and zero guarantees on educations, especially as they pertain to scholarship limits. The limits are high as they are, and kids on the fringes are getting used and abused on an academic level. That’s the one thing anyone can point to as compensation for their labor. If that’s not there, it’s indentured servitude.

          • I’m not really that opposed to the ban. Seems like camps could still be held by private parties all over the country, with coaches allowed to observe, as long as they don’t “coach”. Only thing I wouldn’t like is a camp that only allows specific coaches to observe while blocking out all competition.

Also will probably lead to creating more of an event around on campus camps. Teams will need to find a way to make their camp the most attractive one so student athletes are more likely to make the trip.

For the kids who cant make trips, the internet has helped bridge communication so much over the past decade. Coaches will probably start remoting in to camps in other locations to get around having a physical presence there. Think Super Dave Osbourne on Arrested Development

          • That’s what coach’s camp is all about. You just make it good for the local talent in Oregon and Southern Washington. If you make it good for them, you make it good for anyone.

Wins are how a coach is measured for any talent who wants to camp with any of them. If GA wins here, there will be a higher demand from players and coaches alike.

    • Jim Wilson, on the baseball broadcast, mentioned several contributors from last season were not on the field today. Parker and the game action interrupted him; he did mention Titus F. and Andrews as being out. Later he said the D-line looked “athletic”.

        • We’re finally starting to see what a real D-line looks like with some real DT/NTs in there with some freaky ends. Since 2006 we’ve been a mish-mosh of maybe one DT/NT type plus one good end and maybe a former walk-on O-lineman who was standing around doing nothing.

          So… athletic, athletic?

          • Cool.

I have what are now fond memories of being concerned during the DE era of hearing that the D was dominating the O during the spring sessions.

It’s probably too early in the process to get my hopes up too much but here’s hoping that in a season or two we’ll see results that are similar to the DE era.

  16. So Moran looked best of the QBs today. Garretson better bring it every day to stay #1. With our OC we will continue to use multiple QBs to a certain extent most games anyway. Offenses all in all was not as crisp as coaches want to see. Defense looked pretty good but until you see it against Pac-12 teams we don’t know what they truly are made of. Sticking to my guns that the team has a 5 win cap this year. Would be very happy to be proven wrong.

  17. Looked at the Garretson film above and listening to all the scrimmage reports it appears we should have brought over his receivers with him. :)
