FB Coaching staffs – Corvallis and Eugene

185

Lots of good comments over the last two general threads, feel free to go OT here as well. And, of course, discuss nicebeaver’s work on the recruiting front. Calvin gone?  Worth chasing??

The situation at hole with three players going to the hospital provides an early take on how phils new staff will handle things. While Willie (or do they just call him Will?) is getting plenty of honeymoon support, I did see this comment, Hurrah for Taggart the braggart, he’s all over social media when he has a photo shoot, but no comment when players end up in the hospital. Reasonable take, no?

In Corvallis the salaries for Phillips and Rushing have been announced; $220k and $200k. How’s that gonna go down with Cory Hall at $184 and Telly at $230?

    • Funny the athletic dept. Did the suspension and not Taggert himself. And now he doesn’t report to Taggert anymore. Sounds like he brushed it off and the school took action.

    • “As the head football coach, I hold myself responsible for all of our football-related activities and the safety of our students must come first…I have addressed the issue with our strength and conditioning staff, and I fully support the actions taken today by the university,” Taggart said.

Which is it, coach? Fully responsible vs actions taken “by the university”?

      • The rules may have changed but generally during off season workouts, coaches are not allowed to supervise the workouts. Only the S/C coach could administer the workouts.

        • Coaches are allowed very limited contact during off season workouts, but I’m not sure I understand your point.

As Willie said, he is responsible for the entire program. When this incident occurred Willie was the S/C coaches supervisor and is responsible for the actions (and results therefrom) of the S/C.

    • He’ll be gone in two or three years. The guy is a total fraud. Will “The Buddha” Taggart with this fortune cookie motivational phrases.

  1. With Calvin announcing his decommitment finally, this is the part where dipshit fans will tear him a new one on social media, while also offending our current commits, who start to second guess their commitment.
I suggest you stay off social media if you’re tempted to rag on the kid. It will only make things worse for your team.

  2. We don’t need 10 WRs so Calvin isn’t a big deal (unless he turns out to be great, but he looked really undersized without breakaway speed to me).

The class just lost momentum and got worse in the rankings, so on that front it’s a big deal. Hopefully they can use the new scholarship to land OL, S, CBs, and RBs. I’d rather have those than WRs.

Just saw the Calvin quote from his mom. She wants to be able to travel to games. Very weak minded reason to commit to any school. Mamma’s boy right there. If I’m GA just let him go.

      • How so?

It’s not like NU has an airport.

If he truly needed to be out of state, near an airport, within a decent drive, play at home at least once a year… he should go to Tuscon.

        • Lincoln has an airport…it’s just twice as much to fly into it than Omaha, but Omaha is about a 45 minute to an hour drive to Lincoln/campus. So in that sense, it’s slightly cheaper to travel to Lincoln vs. Corvallis if you consider gas the deciding factor. Also, tv is a moot point too because Pac-12 and Big Ten are available on the west coast. So really, in my mind, it’s split.

          • Might be a split if you look only at home games; when the total schedule is considered not so much. lots easier/cheaper to get to places like Arizona, Colorado, Bay Area, etc than Iowa, Michigan, etc.

Not sure who is advising this kid, or if this is actually the issue.

But, “it’s a big decision and I wish him well”!

          • I know Lincoln has an airport. But so does Eugene, and nobody seems to care. It would cost less to fly directly to Eugene from LA than it would to fly directly to Omaha. It’s an hour shorter flight on the schedule. But in reality it’s one of those flights where you stop climbing then have enough time for a bag of peanuts, a soda and a visit to the head before you start descending. And the drive is 15 minutes shorter and a helluva lot prettier… not that the last matters. I have never arrived late from LA at either PDX or here. Often I’m about a half hour or more early. But those are usually the first or second morning flights.

If you want to make the flight into Eugene your cost target, you can’t fly directly to Omaha. And remember, you’re saving money by flying into PDX and spending a little extra on gas for the rental, just like you would with Omaha v. Lincoln. You probably can’t match the Eugene cost even with a layover at Vegas or DIA. There is no through-transit to Omaha, so you’ll have to change planes and wait for at least an hour. Some have three or four hour waits depending on what time of day you’re traveling.

            And you’ll still pay more.

For the price of one RT ticket, LA to PDX, and a rental and gas, you could easily pack four or five people in your own car and drive. So… yay for cost. It’s 13 hours one way. So maybe that’s a consideration.

Look… the kid should choose to go to school where he wants to go. None of this bullshit about travel makes any sense other than that was his primary consideration, and he was correct in his calculations for both time and expense. But those are not his reasons. They’re him reasoning for his family. And he’s not going to be happy with that in the end.

        • I flew in and out of Omaha once at Thanksgiving once. Scariest flight ever. De-iced the plane and then when we took off the runway had snow on it and I could swear the plane was swerving and I could hear snow being packed under the tires. I’ll take a Portland or Eugene flight with a drive to Corvallis over that any day.

    • I just think Momma knows best. Seems like a very nice woman and was happy for her son when he committed to Oregon State. She probably has met both Andersen and Riley and has more faith and a better impression with GA. She seems like the very grounded one to me.

    • Not too concerned about this. If he doesn’t want to be here so be it. Let’s not sleep on WR Kolby Taylor. He has a solid frame, soft hands, great foot control and a running style similar to Beaver great Brandin Cooks. Also doesn’t hurt that he is already involved in winter workouts. I see alot of potential in this guy.

      http://www.hudl.com/athlete/3193037/kolby-taylor

    • I don’t think he is as much of a Mamma’s boy as you’re making him out to be. If his Mom’s desire to travel to games was the biggest factor, he would’ve committed to Cal/walked on at USC or UCLA and that would’ve been that. That he picked us (and his finalists were all non-California schools) speaks of his desire to get out of the state and be at least somewhat independent.

If I’m GA, I keep recruiting him based off of that. You’re right that we have plenty of WRs though, so if we’re going to lose recruits, might as well lose from the position we’re most stacked at recruiting-wise.

      • I’m basing it off their quotes. But when he committed to us over NE their fans were saying his mom was the reason and involved. Sounded like they were getting this info from one of their paywall recruiting sites. I think this is a case of a kid who will go where it’s best for his family not him. Not sure OSU is best for him given how many WRs we have, but NE definitely isn’t. Cal is probably the best fit if they want him.

        • There’s nothing wrong with wanting family to be able to see your games. It’s more than likely for any of these kids that these will be their last years of football as players. But that should be a smaller variable than fit. All things being equal (or maybe nearly equal), I can see this variable tipping the scale.

I agree about Cal as far as regional access. Utah and Zony would be the same.

        • If it’s a case where he goes where it’s best for his family, he’ll probably stay with us. Cal wasn’t in his top five (and I don’t know how much interest he had in the school before narrowing things down to the final five, although I saw they did dedicate a recruiter to him. Don’t know if Wilcox is interested though), and Nebraska is probably too far from his family.

In any case, I guess we’ll see where this all goes.

    • Angry, this is exactly what NiceBeaver is talking about. Weak minded? Mama’s Boy? I go to all of my brother’s games and that’s a great part of him being at the school he is. Quit being an asshole when you don’t the kid or his family.

      • Not really A@A. I’m saying dont go on social media amd tweet at the kid or his teammates.
Say whatever you want in the forums. I dont think recruits are taking the time to read through a beaver blog.

        • I agree they most likely aren’t. I meant more Angry’s attitude towards Calvin. Immediately labels him weak minded and a Mama’s boy. Angry’s stance is what comes across weak minded.

        • The best place for his future just happens to be where his family can see many more games. He seems to have some idea of Nebby from the 90s. Those days are long gone with Riley. Andersen is a much better bet if making a 4-5 year decision. Riles will be gone before Calvin graduates, no matter which school he ultimately picks.

          • How would you know this? Do you think he’s going to drop two tenths off his 40 or grow another six inches? Right now he’s a possession receiver with a little bit of shimmy and nice hands on this level. He’d be a Timmy Hernandez who catches better (depending on the QB).

I’d rather concentrate my efforts on Quantino Allen to fill the utility role. He’s good enough to line up at any WR or RB position on any given play. And he has speed to boot. Quan is a slightly bigger and faster Quon.

  3. Don’t know why they dumped Radcliffe in football down there. He was well respected in his profession. Oderinde sounds like a hack.

    • Seems simple. Phil wants a “natty”, gives his new HC free rein to change things. Taggart wants to demonstrate change by bringing in his own guys.

Irele Oderinde’s educational background was posted in the prior thread, degrees from Western Kentucky in “recreation administration” and “sport management”. He replaced (for FB) Radcliffe, who had over 30 years in and a national reputation.

This doesn’t mean my expectation that phil’s quick fix would blow up in his face, but it could be a start. The school has said All future workouts have been “modified,”. How’s that gonna impact Willies credibility with the squad?

      • Have you seen pictures of Oderinde? Looks like he hasn’t missed many meals. Radcliffe is at the top of his profession. He wasn’t the problem. Some of the coaches have issues too. Leavitt slapped a player and got fired for it and they have a recruiting coordinator that was fired from his last job for NCAA violations. Obviously ethics or concern for players isn’t a top priority with Taggart or the school.

        • Yup. Some ucks fans are commenting on Oderinde’s lack of professional certifications and saying that he looks “roided up”.

You missed one on Willies staff, tight ends coach David Reaves was accused by the NCAA in 2011 of requesting impermissible recruiting phone calls as part of the mess at Tennessee under his former brother in law, Lane Kiffin.

          • “Some ucks fans are commenting on Oderinde’s lack of professional certifications and saying that he looks “roided up”.

If looking like he’s been thru too many trips in the buffet line looks “roided up”.

His body type looks more like the Schnell

  4. Irele Oderinde joined the Ducks in January 2017 as football’s head strength and conditioning coach

    http://www.goducks.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1526&path=football

Interesting. The announcement of the hire came on Jan 12 and he wasn’t even on the job 2-1/2 weeks before being suspended. Should be a ginormous red flag to any prospective student athlete for football. I’m sure they’re more upset that this news got out and was reported more than anything.

  5. Not that the faculty wields much power over phil and the AD, but there is this from the big O piece linked above:

In an email Tuesday night, UO faculty senate president Bill Harbaugh asked UO’s faculty athletics representative, Tim Gleason, to “investigate this situation” and asked for an update later this month.

They would be wise to review Austin Meek’s piece in the RedGuard, it highlights the current thinking on this exact topic and would have been available to Oderinde if he was active in professional groups.

    It’s worth a read:
    http://registerguard.com/rg/sports/35188193-81/oregon-football-workout-incident-is-a-mistake-that-cant-be-repeated.html.csp

  6. Why the tears over Calvin? Like I said last week, if he doesn’t want to be here, he should not be here. I’d rather have the scholarship given to someone excited to be a Beaver. Said I didn’t want him then, still don’t want him now.

Going after him is like begging someone you’ve been dating who just broke things off to come back. It’s pitiful and won’t go very well, even if he/she returns. Move on. There’s a new bus every hour.

What cracks me up is Husker fans getting all excited over barely ripping an Oregon State recruit and trolling. I thought they were a proud program? How the mighty have fallen! On second thought, no surprise given the Rileyfication in progress there.

    • I’m with you. I would not be surprised that he ends up leaving whichever school he chooses.
The vast majority of recruits always say they get a feeling at a certain school and know it’s the right place for them. Wasted energy at this point. We need OL’s. That should be the focus to close out the class. #rowthebeaver.

    • I don’t see many tears on this thread, do you? Most of us seem perfectly fine with whatever direction this recruit wants to go. ;)

  7. It’s hard for me to get to worked up over losing one recruit. There are so many talented receivers out there in any given year that it boils down to coaching and offensive scheme for overall success. Just looking at next year, I’m more concerned about what the coaching staff can do to return Jordan Villamin to greatness. That will go a long ways towards getting the Beavs to a bowl game.

  8. The is the best we get for outrage?
    http://www.espn.com/blog/cleveland-browns/post/_/id/21287/joe-thomas-outraged-at-report-on-excessive-oregon-workouts

I don’t get the new world yet, I guess. When you put people who are not qualified to do the job at hand, the job becomes a farce. In this case it harmed people. I would say that’s tantamount to assault. And I say this knowing the players probably love the new S&C coach because he has that new car smell and teams buy into group think as a matter of habit. He may be the coolest guy ever. And the workout itself might not have been that bad for some of the participants.

But it was a session led by an unqualified instructor and where safety and health were concerned. If it was some verbal tirade which spilled into the gossip pages, the coach would be made to attend an anger management program. Why isn’t this one made to attend the proper classes in order to not be a danger to his inventory?

    • Sounds like you aren’t impressed with his degrees from WKU, neither am I. From the RedGuard piece linked above:

During this monthlong suspension, Oregon should evaluate whether Oderinde is the right person to run its strength and conditioning program. His degrees are in recreation administration and sports management, not sports medicine or kinesiology. He’s not certified by the CSCCA or the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and Oregon didn’t provide additional certification information when asked Tuesday.

The effect of this on the team will bear watching. Will it result in an “us against the world” reaction to criticism of their new flashy coach? Will those who were hospitalized be fully accepted back? Will the fact that the administration mandated that all future workouts be “modified” have an impact on Willie’s leadership?

      • The team’s going to buy in. The kids in the hospital probably buy in just as much.

Their parents… maybe not as much.

The idea that actual professionals in the field will throw this guy’s workout in the bin and write up a real one should be the story. This guy probably doesn’t have the qualifications or certifications required to be an instructor at Bally’s, let alone at an institution of higher learning. He’s getting paid football-inflated wages for being a crony.

  9. If, as it appears, Irele Oderinde holds no certification in Strength and Conditioning, phil may have to make a “donation” to the NCAA.

On April 24, 2014, the NCAA passed legislation requiring Division 1 colleges and universities to employ strength and conditioning coaches who possess a nationally accredited strength and conditioning certification.

    https://www.nsca.com/Education/Articles/New-NCAA-Regulations-Raise-Certification-Standards/

    • What’s his official title? It looks like he was hired as the Director of Athletic Performance at USF two months after that news release. So maybe they hid his inadequacies in a newly created ambiguity. It looks like he was an assistant S&C coach for about a decade before that. But that would be like parlaying a nursing job into becoming a doctor without going through all the training and licensing required. I’m sure some are good enough to do it, but health and safety issues should not be held up to the low bar of risk assessment. They should be sureties.

      • So… it appears they were doing an end run with him by hiring him as a football coach and giving him the title of Head Football Strength Coach.

He is NOT a part of their S&C department. He will not be reporting to anyone within that department now that he’s hospitalized three kids.

My guess is that he’s a glorified spotter with some recruiting cred.

        • Yeah. Seems Slick Willie Redux has tried to assemble a staff built for recruiting. Doesn’t matter how much shade they’ve been involved with in the past, as long as they can get kids to sign on the dotted line…

Anyone want to start a pool? When will the new Slick Willie: with the pressure to succeed and make uncle Phil happy before he jogs off into the sunset, finally find a way to get Hole U hit with real sanctions?

  10. Schedule is out. Kind of a crappy schedule. Outside of PSU, I don’t see the Beavs as heavy favorites.

Looks like 5 wins. Maybe 6 if they stay healthy. 7 or 8 if the QB play steps up.

  11. Thinkin we beat the following teams:
    PSU
    Minnie
    CSU
    Colorado
    Cal
    ASU

    Toss-up (Most likely a Loss):
    WSU
    Stanford
    Arizona
    Oregon

    Definite Loss:
    Washington
    USC

Im seeing only two definite losses on here, going by how we performed against these teams last year. Colorado being the exception — have them at home, Senior leadership is gone as well as their defensive Coordinator.
Can Beavs pull a win out of the “toss-up” category? That will define our season, going 7-5 or 6-6.

    Go Beavs!!!!

    • That’s some optimism there!

What would make you think CSU and Colorado would be wins. Beavs aren’t good on the road and Colorado isn’t going to just drop off the map.

      • And besides that the team lost 3 starting OL’s.

Re kids flipping: Personally I could care less if a kid flips to another school AS LONG AS HE ISN’T A LINEMAN. Imo we need more hogs.

      • Road game Arizona I have us losing, but I think we can pull out CSU (I don’t think we lose both). Colorado we have at home, and they will be a lot different than they were last year with Coach and Seniors on defense gone.

    • I see it more like this:

      wins: PSU, @CSU
      likely wins: Minn, @Cal, @AZ, @Nike
      toss-ups: @Wazzu, Stanford, ASU
      likely losses: CU
      losses: UW, @USC

    • I see Colorado being a toss up. What are you seeing from Arizona that makes you think that game will be a toss up? Seems like one of the few easy ones on our schedule.

  12. Portland Tribune’s Vondersmith on Ducks training debacle:

“It casts into doubt how much Taggart and his staff can be trusted to not only “do something” — quoting one of what he says are his three tenets — but to do the right thing.

And, let’s not be naive, the now suspended Oderinde has been thrown under the bus, and the bus has been driven by Taggart and athletic director Rob Mullens. Oderinde comes across as a soldier and the others as generals trying to toughen up the Ducks — Taggart putting the hammer down to change the culture, and Mullens complying because he hired the guy. ”

    The rest here:

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/340666-221081-oregon-under-taggart-needs-to-show-it-will-do-the-right-things

      • As does this from the Vondersmith piece:
“…I’m not really sure how to feel when I see Taggart on Twitter (and assistants) flashing an “O” with potential recruits, including all day Tuesday — and don’t hear from the U of O about the workout incidents and fallout until 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. “

    • I also liked Vondersmith’s comment about how he did not jump on the Taggart bandwagon. I think there’s good reason, this is a major screw up one month into the job. Also, I don’t think I’ve read a lot in the Oregon press about why Leavitt got shit canned at USF. He would still be coaching there if he could have controlled his temper. Cristobal doesn’t impress me that much either, he got axed at FAU(despite being a local favorite) as the program regressed under his leadership. Failed head coaches didn’t serve the Ducks too well last year either (Brady Hoke). I guess Quack can shit themselves with joy, but these guys ain’t Chip Kelly. It’s a bunch of non-power 5 nonsense to me, I’m skeptical.

      • As mentioned before, Taggart has two black sheep on staff besides Leavitt…and that’s not including the suspended strength coach.

Part of me is skeptical, part just hoping karma gives swoosh u a smackdown! Probably better off focusing on the Beavs: second year in a row with no established center to start the season, QB questions, and recruiting.

My hands were fully of shit during the Riley years. I sure hope my optimism is warranted.

  15. Enough is enough. Just waiting for basketball to end at this point. A few unexpected wins would be nice but we’re really just dragging down the conference RPI at this point. Next year should be better, partly because I don’t think it can be much worse.

    • Injury and inexperience only excuse up to a point. Effort and teamwork would be nice to see.

I heard Tinks complain about not getting back on D. And others were opining about how we don’t have the depth or talent to run.

The first is taught by making the team run. The second is irrelevant. Even if you don’t have as much talent, everyone on your team should be conditioned well enough to run for a whole game. That’s what we would call effort. You may not be as good as any given team at anything else, but that effort will dog opponents and break them down. Even the team pounding you by 20 or more should just be really annoyed that they have to play you for another 10 minutes, if that’s the case.

That’s how you get unexpected wins. But I don’t see any such fire.

  16. Austin Meek tweets:

“Per Oregon, strength coach Irele Oderinde is certified through the USTFCCA (U.S. track and field coaches association), which meets NCAA req.”

    • Odds on it being the shortest method?

I’m guessing it’s a two day seminar that hands out a certificate afterward. There may even be a quiz involved.

The question of certification can be as much an end run as his employment for football-only was. Those two day or week-long certificate seminars are for coaches to be aware that they are not S&C coaches who have years of such classes for weeks on end, practical training and a very much higher level of understanding of the regimens for any kind of athlete. It’s specifically to address the upper limits of exertion as subscribed by those professionals, and to cement in the certified coaches’ minds that those professionals subscribe those parameters for reasons they will only know by studying them in depth over time.

So if the coach understands s/he doesn’t know better than those health professionals, the certificate is well earned.

      • The USTFCCCA’s strength and conditioning certification program “is a 21-hour, high level, detailed course covering all aspects of strength training” and is accredited through the National Council for Accreditation of Coaching Education, according to its website

As reported in the O by Andrew Grief today.

So, yeah, it could be done in two days. The USTFCCCA doesn’t say anything about a quiz being involved. However, the course does include “take-home, animated video created specifically for this course”

        Lol, nothing to see here!

  17. Got a random message from somebody close to RB Calvin Tyler last night. He said that Tyler is going to be an all time great running back for the Beavs.
Take it for what it’s worth, but this person made it sound like Tyler to OSU is likely to happen.
Could explain why Bryan cancelled his visit.

Speaking of, if you haven’t seen his film yet, it’s pretty damn good. Almost every play, he hits the hole quickly and bursts through with breakaway speed. He outruns the defense on nearly every play and usually gets a TD. It’s really pretty inpressive.

    • Ya his film looks great usually has giant holes to run through tho. He has good tackle breaking ability and balance as well. He definitely relies on his wheels if he cut a few back earlier he would have had a touchdown. I wonder what his 40 is? Either way would be a great get imo. Still need those ol and dl tho.

  18. I’m concerned with OL for sure, but not so much DL.

After last year’s class we are pretty loaded at DE/LB, and don’t forget we have Garcia coming in.

At DT we should have a very solid 3-deep for a single NT position: Evans, Aydon, Vakameilalo. Plus Savea for depth, and maybe Pili coming in. Am I missing something? I don’t remember much 4-3 last year.

    • Concern for the OL is well founded.

To narrow it further, concern for the Center position is especially valid. Last season not much was said/reported about the challenge of coming up with a new C. Yanni was gonna be the answer.

Sloppy exchanges were occasionally noted early in Fall camp; later in camp Gina would simply say, “I saw no bad snaps”. This during the 15 or 20 minutes reporters have to watch practice. The team lost out on getting momentum early in the season because Yanni, and then Kearsly were so very new to the job. It could happen again.

McGiven says settling on a QB quickly is important, I think the same applies to Center.

      • I think the O-line concern is valid. But we do have some good players who have some experience. Brandel is our only valid OT. I think he’s good enough to play the left side if Sattelmaier isn’t an instant fit. Delp has a lot of experience at RG.

So yeah… C is the only real position I really worry about.

One indication that the D-line is stacked and the O-line needs athletes is that Sumner Houston is now listed as O-line. He’s a pretty good athlete who might outplay everyone else in the middle if his learning curve is short. I would think his experience on the D-line could give him some insight for line-calls.

  19. Question. Troy Taylor started at Eastern Washington last year in February. Nicholas Edwards (WR coach hired by Cal) started at EWU in 2014. EWU had 3 receivers in 2016 with over 75 catches. Which of the two coaches would have been more integral to the success of EWU in 2014, 2015 and 2016?…Probably Beau Baldwin.

  20. Anyone else exited for tj green? 4* rb we have? His film looks good and he can catch really well and has insane break away speed… I’m definitely excited for him next year.

  21. OT: Casey on JoeBeav today.
–Expect more than one guy to catch on a regular basis
–KJ needs to get better at putting ball in play

Pat said he feels gut punched by what happened end of last season, the attitude this year may be, ” Tell ’em I’m coming and tell ’em Hells coming with me!”

Casey on for first 25 min, then Rueck, worth listening if you are fans of these two. Confirmation that Jon Warren will be broadcasting the early games while MP finishes Basketball.

  22. The Beavs actually have a chance to win a b-ball game with Stanford’s best player out injured, but they are so poorly thought of they can’t even get any home cooking from the refs. Some truly bizarre calls and a huge foul discrepancy favoring Furd.. I know hoops is now meaningless, but I don’t want this team to go 0-18. This is an opportunity.

    • Interesting….
      Good find
I dont put much stock in 247 crystal ball predictions, but they did get jamire calvin correct, at least leading up to his announcement.

  23. Was surprised by how hard Kendal Manuel was trying by playing excellent D and being persistent all in all if Eubanks was healthy and tinkle was back would’ve been a much different game

  24. Hoops team is really really bad. How many more games of this do we have to suffer through? I’m try to find a win or two on the schedule but I’m just not sure there is one. Regardless of Tres being out, I hoped that we would be more competitive. Very little to be proud of with this group.

  25. More on Strength and Conditioning coaches and the various certifications. Toilet seat crew checked the box, not much more. Or so it appears.

Beavs head and shoulders better than ucks (no surprise!):
At Oregon State, Evan Simon has certificates from the NSCA and the CSCCA, a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education and a master’s in exercise physiology.

    • From the linked piece:

Sam Seemes, executive director of the USTFCCCA (the outfit whose cert satisfied phil and willie), when asked if the course contained “explicit emphasis on exercise-related illness” said he was “unsure” and added “To be honest with you, I can’t really say. It’s A to Z.”
