BIRG’ing, first time I heard of Basking in Reflected Glory was right here on AB. How do long suffering Beavs fans not BIRG for a few days?
But, lets not lose sight of the leg humpers this week. So in addition to reflecting on what went right in LA, let’s hear your thoughts about the upcoming game in Reser. Which DB not named Wright will step up vs the pass happy rich kids?
Can JS keep his guys grounded? I think so, it’s one of his strengths. Early guess………..31-17 Beavs.
First bitches!
Go Beavs
Which DB not named Wright will step up vs the pass happy rich kids?
Alton Julian? Dude continues to be a beast
Although he might play safety. Too many napkins…
From the “are you fucking kidding me?!?!?!?” Files…..
Washington opens as a 4 point favorite.
If I were a betting man, I’d bet the house on that line.
So do head coaches get in the official’s heads before games start and tell them to watch for this or that from the opponent? Maybe the USC staff thought they saw a tendency on film with the Beav secondary and made the refs aware. My impression of the Hawaii game was that the officials let them play for the most part. Smith needs to counter going forward if that’s what is going on. I’m tired of these bullshit calls from P-12 refs.
I celebrated a bit. First win there in forever, solid execution for four quarters AND entertaining style of offense , D pursuing and improving, with a couple of INTs late to kill any USC false hopes.
I suspect Austin will play well next Saturday – he persevered through a tough night, and I bet Blue Adams has him playing better as a result of film review.
Julian should be productive, and Grant is on the verge of more impact plays and should get a few.
Agree about Austin. When Blue left him in last night it convinced me that Austin has a high ceiling and was getting an education that will pay off.
I was, however, surprised that he was on the spoiled chillin’s premier receiver.
I think we let London eat and shut everything else down we could. When Kobe was on the court don’t bother with the best defender, he’s gonna score so shut down everyone else
Calling it now. Beavs will blow the doors off the leg bumpers. Owe them after the screwgie in Seattle last year
Payback is a bitch mother Fulkerson.
Beavs 48, leg humpers 10
My phone doesn’t want to write motherfuckers???
Payback is a bitch. Motherfuckers!
Androids suck motherfuckers
I agree with you all on Austin, kind of like Hughes and Lewis back in 06. It may have even been a strategy to hold and pull and be overly aggressive to just break up the big play possibilities of USC. Notice after London stuck his tongue out with the crazy eyes that the Beavs shut the door and game over from that point on…London is kind of like Evans from Tampa Bay and a tough cover for anyone, esp if refs only allow him to do all of the pushing.
USC and UW are quite similar schools right now, both are living in the past and ripe for a beatdown. Fan bases don’t know what we have seen and the Huskies will be in for a shock once they can’t slow Beavers down any more than Trojans could.
Prediction: OSU 49-20
Beavs dominate Huskies, UW defense is over-rated, Morris hits a few big plays, but Beavs D will get several ints or fumbles. UW isn’t who they once were and it will show. Lake may be fired after this one…:)
Beavs offense already looks like a well oiled machine. Need to score 38+ to beat the Beavs. Washington won’t. Beavs win.
Looking at our defensive strategy I am starting to wonder if it’s designed to encourage other teams to throw. The bend but don’t break style allows very few tds greater than 15 yards. The closer a team gets to the end zone the fewer options are available to an offense as the field compresses. That means that the end zone gets more predictable to defend.
We give up plenty of yards but not many are on the ground or long plays. Another thing to remember
Is that interceptions are generally easier to generate than fumbles. So the easy yards might be a baited line for all these offenses they actually gives us more opportunity for turnovers and plays to our teams strength on defense which is defending from the 25 to the endzone.
Am I just crazy or is this trend happening?
I don’t think you’re wrong. I noticed this last night. The red zone defense keeps everything in front of them. I think they also really learned from the Purdue game on what your assignment is and which DB is guarding who on any given play. I also think JS knows that penalties will be called on us anyways so don’t try to play perfect, try to get into your opponents heads with being phyaical to wear the opponent down.
Sounds about right….don’t let your opponent’s passing game get into any kind of rhythm. Better to dictate the receivers into expecting contact and harassment — we saw several easy would-be completions turn into drops. Even Slovis got out of sync late. My big concern is the defense, giving up about 30 pets a game, still got chewed up pretty good, sure the Beav D got turnovers, but the game was one TO and score by USC from being a lot closer.
I said before the game that it shoyld be the game plan. Its very hard for teams to drive the whole field and not turn the ball over or a penalty to stall the drive. Also was worried about getting PI’s or losing jump balls. I think it was a good job of being physical with London and not let him take over yhe game.
Pretty much executed what I thought they needed to do to win this game. Run the ball, win the turnover battle and don’t give them big momentum changing plays.
Chance played well aside from the two picks. The first 1 was PI and wouldn’t of happened if Bradford wasn’t falling down it just sucks that it was in the end zone. The second he needs to learn from. The game was pretty much out pf hand and the last thing you want to do is commit a turnover and give them life. Besides that he pretty much played a flawless game. I love that he only has to throw about 20 times and be efficient for them to win the game.
That second TO was an attempted throw away (IMHO), he’ll not make that mistake again and will toss it about 10′ higher next time. That’s the play where Lindsay could have broken up the pass but probably didn’t expect the DB to be able to make the int.
Re: Nolan……..he is really showing leadership and moxie. Vs Idaho he took a really hard hit and came up with a thumbs up to the sideline, last night he was nailed by two or three defenders and jumped up immediately. Also, I like that he directed a couple receivers and motioned his blocker on at least one run play.
He had one scramble where he perfectly directed and setup Musgrave for a great block in the flat
I think that was TQ or he did with TQ one play.
We’re also missing two crucial pieces in Hodgins and Gumbs.
Kudos to Tibs for putting together a bend-but-don’t-break defense that is stout against the run.
What is Hodgins’ injury and projected return?
It was a foot injury that required surgery. 8 weeks was the optimistic goal so mid October.
Have we already or will we, face any teams that have a dominating ground game?
Alton Julian and Austin are my two picks for breakout in this upcoming game. I see a similar game plan against the puppies as ee had against the Trojans. UW is deep at TE and WR is young with only a few WR’s as Juniors, but under 6’0″ tall. The freshman and sophomores are between 6’0″-6″3. Height and size won’t be as big of an issue this game.
Our rush defense is holding teams to average of 90 yards per game.
Beavs have a 1.75 turnover per game average with 4 turnovers in the USC game.
Our average points allowed so far this season is 21, but not counting Idaho, is 28 points per game allowed.
Beavs points for average per game not including Idaho is 37, with Idaho its 38.25.
With that said, 52-17 Beavs.
Where’s “bow down” dude? Thought they’d be here by now.
I think he gets delayed a bit in years they lose at home to an fcs squad.
More like bow dover I guess.
OT: Read that Bear rookie QB Justin Fields was sacked nine times in a 26-6 loss to the Browns. Ouch. Welcome to the pros…he’s going to be feeling it Tuesday…
Does that mean his offensive lineman, Buehler, was absent from picking up the blitz 9 times?
Expanding on my thoughts with London/Austin matchup. Wright probably would have faired better but London still would have chewed out a big game. Fact is we don’t have a player that can physically cover him or compete with his skills. He’s sup big, aggressive m, great hands and fast. If the game plan is to keep things infront of you and not allow big plays then Austin vs Wright probably isn’t going to matter a ton. So put Austin on him with the job of keeping everything infront and stopping him from scoring on a big play.
That leaves Wright free to guard their other receivers which is a huge drop off from London. Wright had a very solid game limiting his guys and should have had two interceptions. If you flip that around to Austin he probably doesn’t get those picks and it’s very unlikely Wright gets them against London. It Made YSC very one dimensional to an extreme where it was pretty much London wins the game or nothing.
London had 10 catches and good yards but zero TDs and only 1 play over 20 yards.
Essentially our best db was not as good as their best receiver but the gap between our second best db and London wasn’t as large as our best db and their inexperienced wideouts.
I am so glad Harrison is on our team.
Beavs, don’t be over confident but be confident, like you were Saturday. Play through the adversity whether it’s a turnover or terrible calls. I’d be more worried if Peterson was still there. Who’s going Saturday???
I’ll be there…section 114
#GoBeavs
Not sure why people think UW will be an easy team to beat. This is a physical football team with an underutilized loaded backfield. The one problem with UW is that they pass the ball too much to a thin WR corps.
Their defense is also very good. They’ve held the solid Montana and Arkansas State offenses to 13 and 3 points, and pulled out an OT win against Cal (which could easily be 4-0).
This one is a toss-up. 20-17 OSU in overtime. Beavs cannot overlook the Leg Humpers or it could be a blowout the other way as in years’ past
I don’t think Smith is going to overlook a league opponent that he was OC of 5 years ago. I don’t think he’ll let the players either. You know he’d like to get his first win against them.
Agreed. We were also robbed of a win in Seattle last year that would have made us contenders for a North title.
This is an absolute must-win for Smith.
I’m not sure the Huskies have proven they are as good as advertised over the last 2 years. We know they have a reputation of being physical, but are they really? Can they beat OSU without refs helping it along? Last year Beavs had them beat but the refs intervened. Beavs remember that game and will not be intimidated or out muscled at the point of attack. I think the Beavs oline will lean on and wear out UW dline all game long. Baylor likely goes for 150 again and offensive balance will win the day. UW isn’t balanced and isn’t as talented as we imagine them to be (when Petersen was rolling). TE blocking scheme overwhelmed USC, same for UW coming up.
Beavs have multiple 4 star guys who have a second chance and are humble/intelligent/sound football players and it is starting to show. Lindsay, Harrison, Roberts are all contributing in major ways and Tongue will be soon, Fenwick is going to be electric as he settles into his role. Lowe is a great quiet contributor on blocking, Dline is holding its own, improving and multiple guys are part of it. Linebackers are not required to make every play for once, Safeties are maturing, corners are going to be elite byh the end of the year. BJ Baylor has waited for his shot, and he is flourishing, Colletto is the epitome of loyalty and sticking with a program.
We need at least 1 in the crowd who will take 1 for the team to eat crow. Look what we did the last 3.25 games. We allowed Hawaii to crawl back into that game at times. Idaho the following week, we pitched a shutout. Then the USC game on the road we win 45-27. We won the first half and second half convincingly. UW historically has had a great defense, but look what Michigan did against that defense? 44 yards passing 300+ rushing. Our offensive line can repeat another 250-300 rushing yard game and we can pass the ball around. We dare teams to beat us with their passing game. The only weapons UW has is RB and TE. Defense will get 3 TO’s on Saturday.
If our offensive line can get 200 yards rushing, we’ll be in a great position to win the game. The concerns I see is our front seven vs. their OL (particularly on pass defense) and the Leghumper’s depth in the secondary. Otton provides a bad matchup for both our DB’s and LB’s (since we don’t have a whole lot of coverage LB’s) and Odunze is finally healthy (he wasn’t for the Michigan game). Washington will play to move the chains and try to tire out our defense.
If we run for 300 yards (which can happen), we’ll win in a blowout. I just don’t see that happening after watching UW mostly stop the run versus Cal, who was not able to open up the running game even though they are a pass-first team. I doubt we’ll be able to run the edges like we did with USC because it looks like UW’s secondary has the physical advantage against our WR’s (unless Tongue plays a lot of snaps).
Still predicting a win, but I think it will be a thriller.
OT: more thoughts on the USC win.
From USC media guide:
“ *The Trojan defense, which last season allowed its third fewest average total yards (369.7) and second fewest passing yards (216.3) since 2009 while averaging 2.7 takeaways a game (its best since 2005), welcomes back 15 of its top 19 tacklers from 2020, as well as its leaders in sacks, tackles for loss, pass deflections and forced fumbles.”
It also noted they had 8 returning starters on each side of the ball, and in terms of recruits:
“ *The Trojans also signed a Top 10 recruiting class (including the nation’s No. 1 recruit). Among the 34 newcomers–13 of whom enrolled this past spring semester and participated in spring practice–are 10 collegiate transfers.”
SO. While the Trojans last night were not the Trojans of Cheatin’ Pete’s tenure, it was still a formidable collection of athletes, albeit not coached as well they could be.
Quality win on the road.

Stuck in LA for the night due to charter plane problem. Should have arrived Corvallis around 3am, instead spent night in hotel and back to Corvallis around 3pm. Better sleep? Loss of practice opportunity? It is what it is.

Smith looking into the camera and saying ‘we ain’t done yet’ is just begging for NB to mess with.
I don’t remember what happened against UW last year. What’s the gist if it?
Ball inside the 10 yard line Beavs about to score. Two separate calls marked the ball short of the first down line, each were reviewed, and both plays stood. Even the announcers said Beavs got robbed on BOTH calls.
Hear ya go, only takes a couple minutes to learn the gist of it:
https://www.nbcsports.com/northwest/oregon-state-beavers/pac-12-refuses-admit-it-screwed-oregon-state-blown-4th-1-spot
Many bad calls all throughout, and one-sided against the Beavs, but critically, three consecutive horrible spots on the Husky goal line. 2nd and 1, 3rd and 1, 4th and 1. We easily got the first down on EVERY PLAY (got ~3 yards on the first one) but they spotted every one short. It was indefensible.
Sorry- three bad spots in a row trying to get that first down. We didn’t get it thanks to the spots. We were in the lead at the time (leading by 4 I believe). After that the Huskies marched down and scored, game over.
Wrong
What happened?
You’re right- that was from memory and it was wrong. We were down 21-24 and in the red zone. End of the 3rd quarter. Field position:
2nd and 4
3rd and 1
4th and 1
Jefferson ran all 3 times. I maintain that all 3 runs were first downs. As I recall, the 2nd down spot was the most reasonable (though still bad); 3rd down run was the most egregious spot – 2-3 yards past the marker.
After we turned it over on downs, we traded punts and then WA kicked a FG. On the next drive we threw a pick, game over. Final score 21-27 (less than a TD).
JS posts that Lyndsey is Offensive Player of the Game, Avery Roberts for D, Bradford for ST, and entire O Line for 0 sacks and 300+ rush yards.
Any news on roberts injury?
did he take a nut shot?
Anyone else see this from USC coach… he better stick to losing football as numbers aren’t his thing…
“I don’t know how many games there were today, but I’m assuming there were about 50,” Williams said. “And 25 teams lost. We just happened to be one of them.”
UCLA is the better school, academically speaking
OT: How about the ending to the Packer/ 49er
game!! Crosby is money.
Is it me or were we blitzing a lot more vs USC (and showing more different blitz packages than the past)?
We need to do the same against UW. Other than Kirkland, their OL is suspect, and Morris has proven he isn’t going to beat anyone himself.
Not just you. The line was stunting, pulling and shifting way more and we blitzed DBs maybe 5 times. Roberts blitzed behind the DT atleast twice.
Line play was much more advanced than the first 3 games.
Loved seeing Grant get in there for a sack.
It got overturned on a penalty but it was still a nice play.
In that game you could be describing like 10 different instances lol
My take on the UW game. We have gotten much better in all aspects including our coaches maturing. They have gotten worse in all aspects. We should have won last year.
38-13 Beavs
Just FYI UW hasn’t given up more than 35 in like 7 years. I think we break that streak along with their hearts.
If Washington is truly 4 point favorites that’s the line of the century. The better team at home getting 4 is a no brainer.
That said, it seems like a trap game/let down is being priced in. That’s the Beavs biggest threat this week and what Smith has to prepare for. I’m thinking he knows this, so I’m going Beavs.
31-17
Aren’t lines against UW always a bit silly? UW has fans that bet on them every game despite any logic so the odds makers have to sweeten the pot. Betting on the beavs vs UW pays off pretty often.
And thanks OOB for making a new thread. Going to be heading to Rocky MT NP in a few. Looks like a great day up there. Behave, Beavos!
From ESPN: shows Beavers as the biggest gainers.
Hog, Sparty and Beaver stocks rising
Ratings systems like SP+ and FPI are pretty antisocial when it comes to the heartwarming, up-and-comer stories. “Wake Forest, Boston College, Maryland and Kentucky are all 4-0? Pssh, they’re probably all going to go 8-4.” “Ohio State, Clemson and Oklahoma all look shaky? Whatever, they’re still their conference favorites.”
Outlooks do change, however. Let’s look at the teams whose expectations have shifted the most so far. Here are the 10 teams whose projected win totals, per SP+, have increased the most over the course of September.
Oregon State: +3.2 wins (from 4.3 to 7.5). The Beavers moved to 3-1 on Saturday, beating USC in the L.A. Coliseum for the first time since 1960. They’re ninth in offensive SP+, and while defense remains an issue, they could score plenty of track-meet wins in the weeks to come.
Beavs at #40 in the Sagarin ratings (which is really close to where we came out in the AP and Coaches polls). UW is #25 (due to the strength of schedule boost from Michigan).
It’s really hard for me to understand how a two loss team that lost at home to an fcs team can be ranked that high. Even if it was my beloved beavs it would stink.
NO ONE likes stinky Beavers…
This ^^^
Easy there!
Sagarin ratings are heavily influenced by strength of schedule and win quality. Michigan is #4 and Washington played Michigan, so it boosts Washington’s status. It’s that simple. It actually plays in our favor at this point because the P12 North teams play tough OOC opposition this year (tOSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, TCU, Kansas State)
In some cases, it works better than the polls because it’s less influenced by preseason ranking. For example, it has Coastal Carolina at #50 instead of being #16 like the polls have them, and Nike at #11 instead of #3. Yet it also has 2-2 Clemson at #10 due to SOS.
UW injury watch will be on CB Trent McDuffie (their best defensive player) and TE Cade Otton. McDuffie was expected to be back against Cal, but didn’t play. Otton’s status seems a little more long-term in nature, but isn’t any more clear.
Can you keep us posted? I wasn’t aware of their injury statuses.
Otton tested positive for Covid right before the Cal game. Lake says it will likely impact his status for the OSU game(meaning he most likely won’t be playing again)
Today, Lake said McDuffie is “week to week”.
Angry mentioned above the risk if a trap came for OSU, coming off a historic win & USC. Also note UW has a bye after this game, so should not be looking ahead.
That said, I expect Smith and staff will have the team focused and not dwelling on the USC victory.
Beavs to win, bet that 4 point line…
Wilner at Mercury News has the following PAC power rankings today;
1) UO
2) UCLA
3) OSU
4) ASU
He says Beavs need to guard against letdown this week.
Is there a mechanism in the pac 12 for ADs to request reviews of calls? Barnes should be deep in the conferences butthole right now getting answers to those calls. That was blatant
He should send in the film with written comment, emphasizing the need to protect competitive intregity and student-athlete effort for the good of the game, the conference, and it’s members.
He should challenge the Commish to set and publish a goal of the highest officiating accuracy in the nation, to be monitored and demonstrated by video summary and “correct call” rates (or similar terminology). Officials not meeting standards should be disemployed.
Yeah. Email him that lol
One thing I was thinking about yesterday: Lindsay had a bunch of huge plays on Saturday and overall was super impressive. However, there were some concerning soft plays that he didn’t make. Both of Nolan’s picks were targeting him, and the second one might have been at least partially his fault. His fault or not, he should have fought for the ball and tried to break up the pick (he did nothing). There were also two plays that I remember where he ducked out of bounds rather than get upfield (not during a hurry-up). Eggers called him out on that on twitter- for sure he gave up a couple yards and potentially a lot more if he was able to make someone miss.
Not sure what to make of that because overall he was super reliable and had some great plays. Needs more aggression and to play tougher I guess. The failure to react to the pick was the worst – in a different situation that could cost us a game.
His first pick was Bradford.
He has always been shy about contact which kinda makes sense since he is fairly small compared to most of the guys trying to kill him. Aslong as he gets open and catches hes going to be great. He won’t be the guy who makes the extra move and busts 40 extra yards.. That said we have like 4 of those guys already so a reliably open guy with hands is just fine.
Good call on Bradford. I’m kicking myself for not recording it- would love to re-watch.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UgcJKBBUL8
in OH found this bad boy. 30 minute recap. It skips some nothing plays but all the good stuff is in it.
It has the added bonus of omitting some of the BS penalties
Hard to see a letdown this week as they can ride the same mentality vs UW. Haven’t beat them for 9 years? A win at USC isn’t worth much if they don’t follow up.
UW has a very good defense but a very inconsistent offense.
The main storyline is the head coaching matchup. Smith and Lake were the coordinators under Peterson. They know the others style so well. Always interesting when that happens. Does one guy overthink it or does one know the tells of the other?
Beavs matchup well. They win if they can run the ball consistently like they did vs USC. That sets up Nolan to make high percentage completions.
Defense should be ok, UW qb doesn’t have the ability to take over a game with his arm. So if they can stuff up the run game, it can be a long game for uw.
The advantage Smith has is Lindgren. His ability to adapt to circumstances has been really impressive, and Lake won’t be as familiar with him.
Our AD should be looking at a contract upgrade for Lindgren. Someone is sure to take a run at him if the O continues to play at a high level.
Hey we get an earlier game time. Away. At Wazzu.
UW starting to implement wildcat plays, and the RB says he is eager to throw out if it.
Good. It’s always a 50/50 ball when a non qb throws.
I expect a healthy dose of trick plays from UW. Reverses, reverse passes, double-passes, wildcat passes (as noted above), whatever they are I wouldn’t be surprised if they did 2-4 of these to loosen up our D.
Their O Coordinator is sitting on an inferno, and if we can shut down their run game they will be hurting. If their stud TE Otton is out, I like our chances even more.
Not sure who we would put on Otton if he plays, or what a good strategy would be since we don’t have great pass coverage LB’s.
If he doesn’t play, load the box and dare Washington to beat the secondary. We’ll give up points but we should get a turnover or two.
Maybe Oladapo? Probably best combination of size and coverage ability. Or possibly Julian.
Put Julian on him. Every play is either cover him or blitz.
RE: recruiting and video, I wonder if OSU could get its NVEDIA alum to fund installation of a state of the art and highly “camered” video system at Reser in the upgrade to provide the best look and replay viewing experience possible?
I don’t know what limitations or officiating crews would have on use of someone else’s cameras?
The nice part about the USC game is that the fly sweep was utilized for multiple personnel. Bolden, Bradford, and Lindsay got multiple touches.
Seems that the next logical step is to use this as a motion to set up runs up the middle. This was integral to the 2007 offense.
Also, where was Gould? At some point, Irish and Gould will be matched up against slower DBs, and should have breakout games.
Didn’t notice Gould. I think Beason had a drop…no Dunmore? What’s his status? Still learning the playbook?
You can only get so many receivers on the field at once! We had five with touches, plus two others that I know got a decent number of snaps (Tongue and Fleming).
Beason had one drop
Sione Lolohea nominated for P12 Freshman of the Week.
Yet another HS prospect correctly identified by the AB Scouting Braintrust as rated too low.
UW line swing considerably this morning.
UW opened as a 4 point favorite. Current odds have beavs favored by 2.5. I’m sure every pro better jumped at that opening line.
I jumped all over that opening line. That was even more ridiculous than the USC line since that was easy money. Even at -2.5, Beavs still look like a strong bet, but at +4, it was no-brainer to parlay some of the winnings from last week into that bet.
You got anything on Beavs to win the PAC12 North?
Line was +2500 in late August.
OH shit. I forgot I dropped 50 on it. I’ll have to check what my odds were
There’s also the “over 4.5 wins this season”, was -135
Roberts still listed as the starter this week. Was worried when he was slow to get up in the 4th that he may have tweaked his previously injured arm.
Also, Gumbs still listed as OLB1. So not sure what to think of that.
Defense could really use Gumbs and McCarten on the edges, but it’s been nice that the younger guys have been able to hold down the fort in their absence.
Link? I noticed earlier in the year that the published depth chart was just staying the same every week and wasn’t reflecting the actual starters- has that changed?
Depth chart:
https://postimg.cc/BPHDVTB2
Thanks! Curious- where does that come from? Is it just given to the media in print form every week?
Some of the assignments are definitely strange, or at least seemingly very out of date. How could Baylor be a co-starter and not have the starting job to himself? I’m not sure whether Flemings started (though I assume not) but he certainly didn’t get much PT. Whereas Harrison did.
Anyone notice whether Elijah Jones was playing / playing much? I was watching in a bar and only really noticed Wright and Austin.
They pass it out to the media shortly before the Monday press conference each week
I don’t think Jones played at all, just looking at season snap counts on PFF. If he did it was only a few plays.
I did notice he’s an OR with Austin on the depth chart.
Has there been any update on Franke? I think he got injured versus USC.
I know Franke got hurt. Any news on that? Sharpe, AHM, Saluni, Stover have all played well but it would be nice to get another guy in the rotation especially of their level. Gumbs situation is bizarre.
Way OT: Anybody with a smoker ever smoked almonds?
Yes. Spread them out on a sheet, drizzle lightly with oil and sprinkle some sea salt on them. I smoke them in the Traeger for 5-6 hours. Delightful!
I’m on it!
Thanks
Seems to me the paper would be destroyed trying to roll them up.
Smith presser.

Sounds like Bradford not being able to advance the onside kick was a classic case of clueless refs.
Honestly…college football generates so much revenue – how is competent officiating so hard to come by?
And blowing it dead instantly penalizes the team that benefitted from the play. Could let the play go and call it back later if you need to make a call late.
Similar thing happened a couple years back against USC when Tago recovered a fumble and started returning it. They blew it dead because they said it wasnt a fumble, then went to review. Review clearly showed a fumble so OSU still recovered it, but way back at mid-field instead of a potential TD by Tago.
They’re supposed to let the plays happen and not blow the whistle because you can always go back but obviously that didn’t happen. This team was luckily good enough to overcome a poorly officiated game. We’ve seen in years past that they weren’t good enough to overcome bad calls. Poor officiating is the reason Gebbia still can’t play which is just inexcusable. What if Gebbia was a huge pro prospect? Those missed calls would’ve cost him millions of dollars. Do you think he’d be able to sue?
The call didn’t cause the Duck player to have the dirty play. The official could have only given half the distance and a first down not made him less injured.
I’m talking about the fact that the play should’ve never happened because they were already in the endzone but there were 2 blown spots on TDs before.
Pretty sure the rule is the kicking team can’t advance the ball if they recover. The receiving team is free to return.
There’s an officials shortage nationwide in nearly all sports. Most work their way up the ranks from youth sports. But the parents are more ruthless to officials than sports fans. Most quit leading to a smaller pool of candidates.
Can attest to this. My wife is coaching 3rd grade girls soccer and there have already been asshole parents yelling at the HS kids who ref, as well as at the coaches. Fucking ridiculous how high strung these people can be.
Little Suzy’s the next Pele motherfucker.

UW depth chart for this week.
Otton and McDuffie both listed as starters, fwiw.

@Beav in OH
Did Brewer or Sorensen get any snaps?
Sorensen didn’t.
I can’t tell if Brewer did because I can only see full season totals, but it looks like he may have gotten a few. Definitely single digits if anything.
He seems to be the favored backup based on his snap count and his reported versatility being able to play positions across the line. His PFF rating is ridiculously good, too.
Thanks, I like getting snaps for OL backups. Furthers their education.
Boxscore shows Sorensen got at least one snap. Can’t say when though.
How weird is it that this weekend is the 10th worst rush defense vs the best rush offense in the P12…and the beavers are not the defense.
To be fair that’s heavily influenced by giving up 343 to Michigan
Michigan realized that they never needed to pass the ball to win (15 total attempts) because UW could never sustain drives without their two starting WR’s. They were fine with punting the ball away if they couldn’t rush for a first down.
Brutal way to lose a game. Washington’s defense got crushed via 56 carries. I realized by the end of the first quarter that it was over for the Leghumpers
I hope OSU can repeat that kind of ratio, with Chance’s accuracy and taking advantage of 20 attempts or less.
One disappointing thing in the game was that Baylor ran his ass off but didn’t get a TD. I know that individual stats aren’t the goal but he was leading the nation in rushing TDs before the game. That’s got to be helpful in recruiting to have a guy that’s in the tops of the nation in anything and receiving accolades. He still managed to get offensive player of the week for Pac 12 tho. I’m sure he’ll get plenty more but imagine if he won the Doak Walker award or something.
I wonder if we’ll be able to keep Lindgren? I’m sure they’ll offer him more money but also pretty sure head coaching jobs are going to come knocking as well as bigger schools for an OC position. Hopefully Smith is prepared with a short list of replacements.
Baylor had a shot in the 4th where he got us up to the 2 yard line, but subbed himself out cause it looked like he took a good hit. Then Fenwick and Colleto came in and Colleto kept the ball.
I’d much rather he pays attention to his health and takes breaks when he needs to. We are loaded at RB and we need him to keep up his amazing season. He’s been a great team player his whole career and I think he understands if he isn’t at atleast 85% on each play someone else can help the team more. He will keep getting tds and yards if he stays healthy, a shit load of them.
Saturday prediction: Baylor goes over 100 and adds 2 more tds atleast.
Baylor went from a guy that seemed to be able to get that third down, kind of sneaky good back to running like a man possessed. It looks like he resents tacklers. He’s really earning and embracing the #1 role and it speaks well to the way the staff have managed a transition to an all-time Beaver back like Jefferson to Baylor. There’s quite a bit of current and incoming depth, and I look forward to seeing it play out.
I’ve said it for two years, Baylor HATES getting tackled.
Anyone else notice the amazing footwork by Harrison on some of those yards after a catch? I need to
Find a video but I remember thinking he just made three dudes miss basically dancing in a box.
Idk how he does it but he needs to teach the whole team. It’s really impressive
The sweet science of boxing…
Heard the spread moved to the beavs being favored by 2.5.
I think this will be the best defense they’ve faced all year. Michigan ran all over them tho so no reason they shouldn’t be able to do the same.
Another Milestone from the W over SC:
GT reports: OSU allowed no sacks and didn’t give up a tackle for loss for the first time since 1993.
That is very surprising. I’d figure the last time would be more recent, like 2012 vs. Nicholls State or something
Here’s some more!
https://twitter.com/BeaverFootball/status/1442536479167713286?s=20
Against a USC team that had plenty of veteran, highly rated players. At home, with the crowd and refs in their favor.
Looking UW’s defensive depth chart. Pretty young defense. Only 1 SR starter and two JRs. No SR backups. One 1 JR backup. Though it may be deceiving as everyone got an extra year.
May be recency bias, but that was one one of my favorite Beaver football victories. The way they scored two TDs at the end of the first half…the blocking and running….Crazy Legs doing it all. Playing through all of the flags.
The D could do better, and I think they will. They keep at it, keep pursuing. Under Andersen, they gave up. Now even if they don’t get a great tackle or aren’t in perfect position, they keep fighting, grabbing a hold of the player, and people are showing up.
And there’s more to come. More WRs to get on the field like Tongue and Dunmore. Improvement from young players like Sio and the DBs.
Another young player who’s flying a little under the radar- Julian really came on and took the job away from Arnold. He’s an exciting player to watch, and he’s getting better every week. Looking like the best safety we’ve had in a long time and probably the best open field tackler on the team.
Hes doing a great job. I would say 3rd best and that’s no shame. Omar and Avery are fucking nails and the combo sounds like a buddy cop movie.
I’ve enjoyed watching these two in general — solid.
What do you guys predict attendance will look like Saturday?
Not the announced number, but like how full will it be?
Just wondering if that USC game is a big enough catalyst to kick start things. Or if Covid protocals and general discomfort with crowded stadiums will keep it pretty low
How full? About 1/2, so low 20K. Coming off a great win, a good conference opponent and a chance to break a losing streak, plus, a reasonable 6 pm start time. Predicted weather, sunny, mid 70’s.should be a great evening.
But I think there’s a lack of comfort w/COVID.
I get the inpression that the staff is hoping to see Reser at around 40k, as a show of support for the hard work the team has put in and their recent progress. But I’m sortof with you, thinking it will be in that 20k – 30k range. On the higher end of that if Husky fans actually travel.
And this is with most condition in the team’s favor(good weather, decent start time, coming off a big win) Covid is the wild card.
40k just seems like a wish. I cant remember the kast time I saw 40k in Reser except maybe a few Civil War games and maybe Wisconsin.
If they dropped the proof of vaccine rule, they place might fill up. Doesn’t make sense to be one of only 6-7 schools in the country with this rule.
Of course, it doesn’t sound like they have enough staff to handle a full crowd. Massive numbers of people no-showed for work for the Hawaii and Idaho games.
Stadiums all over the country are near capacity except in Oregon where you need an inoculation or resent covid test. Duck’s game vs Fresno state they kept the cameras on the student section to avoid showing the empty seats. Oregon at Ohio State was near capacity with near zero mask.
And capacity is over 100k. My daughter went to Penn St. game this weekend and it was over 100k. For that matter Friday night football games the past 2 Friday (in PA) were packed with shoulder to shoulder without any reported outbreaks. Science no longer matters it is all about control and a narrative.
If your looking at it scientifically you need to wait 7-10 days to make any evaluation for an outbreak.
Funny I was literally just thinking this exact thing. I have a couple friends going, first time in a while. I am guessing the stadium is 90% full. Would be in the 95+ range but I do think covid is holding some people back
90% would be about 38,700, correct? Thinking full is around 43K. I wouldn’t expect that w/out COVID…maybe 32-34K w/out COVID.
You can sprinkle in a few thousand Husky fans there too.
hows hole’s attendance? same policy there
It was pretty low against Stoney Brook. I didnt see any of the other 2 games.
Back when they put the Covid policy in for UofO amd OSU, I’m pretty sure they said “for at least the month of September”.
Makes me wonder if both schools might decide to lift the Vax card and mask policy as soon as October hits, or shortly after, if attemdance continues to be low.
They had a singer from Outkast there to get buzz about the game….must be worried about attendance.
Big Boi’s son is a Duck walk-on and I think he goes to all the games. UO was also advertising $29 tickets for the game.
I really don’t think COVID will have much of an impact. OSU will probably blame the low attendance on COVID but I’ve always been disappointed with turnout on the rare occasions after a big win and a bigger crowd could be expected. Going back to when Raising Reser was completed and we were winning, the crowds were disappointing. I attribute a lot of this for how OSU mishandled season ticket holders and falling short on game day experience and overpriced tickets. They really missed an opportunity to fill the stadium and create an electric atmosphere. They needed to have a run of consecutive sellouts so fans knew the seats were valuable and had a sense of pride in the game day experience. Instead, nobody felt any urgency to get tickets and often waited until game day to decide if they wanted to go… ultimately deciding it would be easier to stay home and watch on TV. To increase attendance, there needs to be a bigger base of repeat customers or those that consistently plan their weekends around going to Beav football games. This will take more winning and a shrew marketing approach. Not just 1 win against USC
School is back in session ya? That will help if so! I’d go, but I got a surgery the following Monday, so I am laying low. Been waiting for over a year for it and don’t want to show up with Corona and have it pushed back
I would be thrilled if there were 30k fans in the seats, with a limited fuskie presence.
Interesting tweet from Canzano. Oh what could have been….maybe.
https://twitter.com/johncanzanobft/status/1442607815101587459?s=20
So who’s coaching us now in the alternate timeline where we were pretty good in the late 70’s?
That’s so depressing
Wow, Fertig was only 33 when he took over. Had to have been the youngest HC at the time, right?
Said it before, hiring is one of the most important things a manager does… : )
Beavs get 4 votes.
Why is Fresno ranked #18?
They beat UCLA when they were in the top 15 and played Nike close.
Sagarin has them at #52.
Gotcha. Every time I’ve watched them they’ve looked bad.
Ryan Leaf has the Beavs at 24, whatever that’s worth (0).

Another excellent article from Kerry…

Thanks for posting. Didn’t realize they rushed for 324 yards Saturday. Also enjoyed this quote about Smith “All you have to do is look at the performance of the athletes. A player commits to playing the best you can for a coach you really respect. He has established an attitude and a belief in those kids.”
This is how you can close the talent gap and it’s happening.
I’m not convinced there’s a talent gap. Very little difference between a high 3 star and a 4 star, and the Beavs have gotten legit 3 stars. The problem under Riley is many of those 3-stars he landed were on the low end. Over and over back then I’d write that you can win big with legit 3-stars. Now we’re seeing it. Makes me reiterate my stance that it was a good thing getting rid of Riley. I know it was a tough 6 years, but we’re finally at a level that’s sustainable. We can sustain high 3-stars and coach them up and scheme around deficiencies. When I was anti-Riley, this is the exact type of team I was envisioning.
Smiths staff are good evaluators. They get players who fit the schemes and culture. They also only reach on low talent when everyone else is missing it or the kid has lots of undeveloped potential. A 5 star recruit often just means they are very physically developed at a young age and have learned the skills. If you look at success in the NFL the gaps from high school evaluation are often non-existent.
But you still need to win to sustain anything. I think JS has instilled that winning attitude.
I keep remembering what Erickson asked him when they first met, “are you one of my managers?” JS went from walk-on QB to leading probably the best team in the country in 2000/01. Too bad he didn’t get to play the entire UW game. The “Angry” Beavs might have been undefeated!
The more I think about the possibility that Smith would jump ship if offered a job like USC, the more I think that could become reality.
People say Smith is a Corvallis guy and he’d stay loyal to OSU, but I just don’t see it.
If he starts to turn things around at OSU this year, but still sees a lack of fan support, why wouldn’t he be tempted to coach at a school that could pay him quite a bit more and also provide all of the support needed to become a well run program? Because he wants to see Reser get rebuilt? Because he wants to relive the Fiesta Bowl year?
He’s from Glendora, CA, only about 40 miles from USC. And he’s coached at Boise, Montana and UW. It’s not like he’s a Corvallis guy through and through.
And think about Mike Riley. Mr Corvallis, who left Corvallis at the first sniff of modest success at OSU. And then Mr Corvallis left again for Nebraska.
You’re only a Corvallis guy until a better opportunity arrives.
I don’t know that USC would try to hire Smith, but I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility if Smith has a great season at OSU this year. Gotta strike while the iron is hot.
Thats why it is imperative to do what we can to support JS and the program as fans. Gotta get those butts in those seats!
Also, Barnes needs to break out the pocket book if there’s any indication that he could leave.
and SC could throw a boat load of cash at him…as someone pointed out in response to my initial post about this last week, would JS be a sexy enough hire for the alums? I guess we shall see, but I do see SC making him a candidate especially if the beavers go 9-3 or even better. The beavers throttled SC to I think that will leave a lasting impression. All said, I really think OSU would do anything and everything to remain him especially given the stadium renovation starting..
Retain him.
I doubt USC is going to want Oregon State’s coach after one big win. USC fans would look down upon that hire. They’re going to go after a big, glamorous name.
That’s why I mentioned it OSU goes on and finishes 9-3 or better, I think they look at him. You’re right though as I don’t think 1 win would be the selling point.
Alumni orgs at SC have big influence over who is HC there; no one from Oregon State would ever get serious consideration.
The biggest factors I see in retention are these.
1) His pay actually isn’t that bad. It’s still bottom of the pac but for a young first time head coach it wasn’t terrible. Assuming he gets no bonus salary increases for wins he will be making 2.9 million a year in 2025. For a 10 win season he gets an additional 100k, 9 wins 75k and 8 wins 50k. There is also additional single payout bonuses for now wins and such.
2) security. All he had to do at Oregon state to keep his contract is have winning seasons. He gets an automatic year extension for every single winning season.
3) buyout. His buyout is 3 million for 2022 and, 2023. 2 million for 2024 and 2 million for 2025. Whether he gets extensions or not there will be another complete negotiation at the end of 2025. If he can have winning seasons this year tell them I would expect his salary to bump into the 3.5-4 million range.
4) Program buy in. Yes the beavs are still bottom of
The pac for assistant and recruiting budget but it’s more than double what it was under Riley and more than Anderson too. If you see success and more money coming into the program I suspect you will also see more money for staff and recruiting. He is being directly incentivized for his work and it allows him to get better results. That’s deeply satisfying as an employee.
5) Cost of living. He’s essentially the wealthiest person in the damn county. He’s one of the wealthiest in the freaking state. 3 million a year in Oregon is insane. 3 million a year in LA gets you a modest bungalow 50 miles from work. Clay Helton was getting about 4.5 million a year. That would make him the 7th highest paid Laker.
6) Success and sunk cost fallacy. If Smith can keep this going and start competing for conference champs then it’s a near miraculous turn around. He has put a ton of effort into this and that’s not to be overlooked psychologically. Unless he’s a guy that just loves building programs and gets bored with winning then it’s a tough situation to leave. Not only that any program that picks him up will be a rebuild on a perennial top 25. That’s a shit load of pressure and work when you can basically stay in Corvallis winning games, helping your guys become men and being nearly worshipped.
I am not worried at all about him being poached this year. No one outside of a Texas or Alabama could afford the risk of paying a 3 million buyout on a coach with 5 years HC experience and a losing career record. The fact is we won’t get a real answer on if he’s a Corvallis lifer until he either leave in 2024/2025 or renegotiates in the 2025 season.
Thanks, hadn’t really looked into Smith’s current contract. All good points on why he would likely stay. Bottom line is he is setting himself and his staff up for a nice pay raise if they keep this pace up.
I think he’d like to see Reser built, filled (or almost), and have OSU in the national conversation (top 10-15) and win a significant bowl game or be in the playoffs (yes, I think he thinks that’s achievable, he was on a top 4 team once) before he leaves.
I also think he’ll be more interested in seeing his coordinators rewarded with salary increases than himself. Sure, he might get more, but I bet he emphasizes Lindgren if the O keeps up this pace over a season or close to it. Hopefully the D gets better results and he has a reason to reward Tisebar.
USC could go after Ed Orgeron… oh, nevermind.
USC is too arrogant for that. I could see another, better-resourced-than-OSU program poaching JS (e.g. UW), but I just don’t see the USC boosters pushing for JS.
Remember, there were Riley to USC rumors, too (at the height of his powers), but they went with the anti-Riley, Lane Kiffin. Plus, Helton was a “safe choice” when he was hired, so the pendulum there has swung back to Splashy Hire.
If Smith and Lindgren continue to burn up the Pac12 with offensive stats, they may suddenly be a sexy hire for quite a few teams.
Defense wins games, but offense sells tickets (except in Corvallis…..wah wah…)
If success continues deciding factor for both of those guys is simple. Do they want to be head coaches. Smith gives them a large amount of leeway in running the schemes they want and having independence. You never hear the qbs talk about looking over film and getting adapted schemes from Smith. It’s always Lindgren who is developing the offense. This is how it should be IMO. If you have a good coordinator let them do their job, Smiths job is the big picture, program culture and management.
If success continues I think Barnes has shown he’s willing to open the pocket book and pay for success. These guys have a great situation if their at the peak of their career ambitions. If they do really want to be head coaches then there’s nothing we can do to keep them long term except torpedo the program so no one wants them.
I don’t get the sense that Lindgren likes the media side of things and wouldn’t be too into the HC role.
Would be tough to turn down a big raise though, if it presented itself
Big cities are doomed to splashy hires in a way because of their talk radio and just how vocal the fans get in bigger cities.
If USC makes a decision to hire Luke Fickell, I could see Cincinnati extend an offer to Lindgren.
Fickell is waiting for Ryan day to lose a few more this year and go back home to Ohio St.
I’m going through the pre-season predictions here. Nuc had a good one with us being 9-3 and beating USC. So far he is spot on.
I wrote: When you smooth it all out, I think 7-5 is the likely outcome. I’d give them a +/- 2 variation where you could have a special season or miss a bowl entirely.
But I had USC as a sure loss (funny because I picked them to win in the game thread, after seeing we have a great QB). So we’re now looking at the upper end (+1 or +2) of that confidence interval. 7-5 is now worse case.
Think I called an 8 win season and winning the PAC north.
With the PAC as unsettled as it is, and distracting issues all over (Rolovich vaccine drama @ WSU, Helton fired, Utah player sadly killed), they might get 9 or more. Ha! 9 would be appropriate….
“Why not 12?” As opposed to the MBB slogan “Not 12”
(11-1 regular season plus bowl)
If the offense keeps this torrid pace…
12-1 couldn’t happen – if we go 11-1 we have the extra conf championship game. So…12-2 losing to UCLA in the champ but winning the bowl?
Oh yeah. The conference championship has been such an unlikely scenario in the past i didnt even remember it.
So….Not 12….. Cause we’re going 14-1 and winning the NCAA championship!
(I probably screwed that math up too)
14-1 would be the ceiling lol.
Wouldn’t happen if we were a lowly 12-1. 4 loss Clemson would still get in ahead of us.
As a Beaver fan I’m to tainted to think that far ahead. Just win the next game baby!
I think I said they could go anywhere from 4-8 to 8-4 or something like that. Also made a comment that they would go as far as the QB could take them.
Except for my prediction that we beat Purdue and go undefeated in OOC. It was close but no sugar!
Still pretty good. I had that one as one of my sure loses.
Pick em games are up. I slipped a Thursday and Friday game in there, so get your picks in early. Lots of interesting games this week actually, it’s was tough to choose. I had to throw in 1 crapfest that had a 34.5 pt spread, just cause of that ridiculous line.
Also, all Pac12 games have a 7.5 pt spread or less, which i found interesting. Parity.
Vegas must like Stanford’s chances on running on Oregon’s D. Go Card.
Didn’t realize this is at the Farm. Could be a trap game for Hole.
No question that Shaw is a better coach than Cristobal, but will he be motivated to come up with a better game plan?
McKee is coming on strong. My biggest knock against Stanford at the beginning of the year was the lack of any real top-end talent. If they have an all-conference QB, they’ll be just as dangerous as anyone in the wide open North.
The line now says OSU -2.5. Did we really open +4?
yeah, it moved alot yesterday. Smart money got on the Beavs early
Dang. Hope some of you guys got in on that. In the CBS pool we were still +2.5.
Re: the LA “splashy hire necessity,” I forgot USC’s last two hires were relatively “safe” choices rather than big names after they got burned by Kiffin. Sarkisian was basically a .500 PAC-12 coach, but he was a USC guy so they brought him back home. Helton’s players really liked him and he was pretty good as interim coach, so USC decided they didn’t want to pay for a bigtime hire.
I think the pendulum has swung back for them, especially at the dawn of the NIL era. They’re going to want someone with experience dealing with professional egos (hence all the NFL calls they’ve made).
Fickell would be a fish out of water in LA. He’s an Ohio guy that has been in-state his entire career and his son just committed to play for him next season. He also just turned down two P5 jobs (MSU and WVU) to stay and build Cincinnati.
Maybe Peterson wants to go there and get that final Riley money before retiring.
Maybe, but my (limited) sense of Petersen is that he’d not take the job for the money; only would accept it if he felt he’d have freedom to succeed and believed he could succeed there.
If you’re interested, here’s a link to a WSJ piece on Petersen, surprisingly it’s not behind a paywall.
Written in 2020, the piece says he will be at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business, … and Petersen’s task will be to advise and mentor students, staff and faculty in the management approaches that made him one of the most successful college coaches of his generation.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/chris-petersen-the-college-football-coach-who-walked-away-11594297594
Agree. I see USC reached out to the Lions coordinator and former chargers coach Lynn. I think that says what you need to know about the appeal of the job.
Hopefully they go back into their past for some underqualifed, former player, and continue to underperform…
How about Scott Frost. Tearing it up at Nebraska!
Willie Taggart is on the line…
But I think everyone knows USC is waiting for Urban Meyer. Each week seems to get worse for him in Jacksonville.
If I am USC, I am hiring a guy who is an x and o master. Talent will always come to USC because of location. Hire assistant coaches who are great recruiters. They won’t hire some up and comer. Fickell is waiting for the Ohio St job.
Best current candidate is bill O’Brien. Has been a head coach in college before and currently at Alabama. Did well while being hamstrung by sanctions at Penn St. I think that’s who they eventually hire.
Anybdoy see when Cristobal laid into his WR Kris Hutson for a taunting penalty before half time, that cost UofO a scoring opportunity?
Video: https://twitter.com/CaramelPhd/status/1441980699276451840?s=19
The takeaway from fans was Hutson handled being yelled at well and was repectful in his response to Mario. I can see that.
But then Hutson after the game posts the pic of himself taunting the UA player and compares himself to Demarcus Cousins(who always got techs for small infractions)
Seems pretty disrespectful to his coach, haha.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CUWTbAXFcfn/?utm_medium=copy_link
I heard local radio guys blasting the play but didn’t know what they were talking about. Anyone hear of Devon Williams?? Maybe he is injured but has played in 1 game this year and has 2 receptions. Don’t think we missed out on much.
I much prefer Harrison
He was pretty good last year. I wonder what happened.
Had a good game in the civil war against us.
Ya I thought it was hilarious.
They clearly have no respect for Mario. Dude was staring him down.
I love that Mario had to puff his chest out like he’s the Hulk or something, to dress down a 175 WR, and the kid didnt flinch.
He even had Mario’s tiddies graze him a little.
He’ll probably be in the transfer portal or kicked off the team. That’s a really bad look for Mario, so he has to set an example or he’ll lose the team over that. If he hasn’t lost them already. The way that kid had zero respect for him implies he might have lost the room, which would be weird for the #3 team, but this is a case where I can see it happening.
I just think Mario’s steroid usage is high… needs to dial it down some.
Looks like Huston is saying back to him “Let’s go, let’s go”. That doesn’t look good at all.
Purdue won again. Looks like they have a pretty good defense.
Plummer is also looking elite. No ints.
UWs cade otton not expected to play vs the beavs. In COVID protocols. While his stats don’t wow, he is a big part of their offense. His loss is a big one for them.
Reverse luck oh keeps rolling.
Richard Newton is likely to play this week, per Coach Lake
I don’t know what OSU is smoking, thinking they’ll be able to sell even half of the stadium out with average tickets costing over $100 per seat?!!
There are just a shit load of seats available still, and the areas that look like they’re sold out are just grey because they’re reserved for students or the band, as well as the 45 hour ticket promotion they put out this week.
The rest of the sections have a ton of seats available. Even the upper deck cheap seats (at $60+ per tickets) are barely selling.
Check out the map: https://osubeavers.evenue.net/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/SEGetEventInfo?ticketCode=GS%3ABEAVERS%3AF21%3AF03%3A&linkID=oregonst&shopperContext=&pc=&caller=&appCode=&groupCode=FBI&cgc=&dataAccId=229&locale=en_US&siteId=ev_oregonst
I also wonder if OSU is contracting with SeatGeek to sell small sections of seats at cheaper prices, just to give off the impression that they’re actually getting sales? Cause there are plenty of available seats on there too, but at generally half the price you find on the OSU website.
For anybody interested in going but not willing to pay these prices, try emailing Sara Elcano and tell her you’d like to attend but don’t want to pay that much. I’ve heard that she will work with people to get them seats for whatever they’re willing to pay.
But it shouldn’t look like this on Tuesday of game week. They need to have 50% of this place sold by now and they’re nowhere close.
What are they thinking with $100 tickets, haha…..This isn’t the Metallica farewell tour
I was thinking about going to the game, but seats in section 120 are about $96 after fees. I guess an empty seat worth $100 nets you more than one with a butt in it at $60. Most of section 120 hasn’t changed much since I looked yesterday. Do they lower the prices as kickoff approaches?
I paid $45 for better seats for the Idaho game.
The Stubhub fees are also ridiculous. I don’t remember the fees being so high a couple of seasons ago.
I remember seeing that the stubhubs and seatgeeks of the world are now contracting with sports franchises as a way to sell alternative pricing tiers and also give the appearance that demand is higher than it really is. I have to assume that is why you are seeing higher fees on those sites now. Sortof like hotels selling discounted rooms, but still tacking on a $30 per night resort fee to cover your newspaper and wifi.
It’s like OSU has no interest in winning over their fan base and encouraging them to come back. Why would an average family of 4 attend a game at those prices ?
They might as well save their money on renovating Reser and just knock down the West side and try to sell out the East side and end zones only.
email Sara Elcano about the 4, 4 , 4 for $100. Four hotdogs, 4 drinks ,and 4 tickets
So what teams are the biggest threats to the Beavs in the pac? Oregon obviously is the favorite for the champs but they don’t look unbeatable and we beat them last year and this team looks better. ASU doesn’t look as good as they were hyped up to be. UCLA looks pretty solid but we don’t play them til the Championship game lol. Everyone looks a tier below that level. Of course we have our long standing streaks with Washington,Stanford, WSU and probably others and can’t afford to overlook anyone.
This team really looks as good or better than anyone in the conference. They just don’t get the respect that other schools do because of being irrelevant for so long. If this team can stay focused they’re in the hunt for the championship. I said last week if they beat USC they are dark horses. The tides have shifted and Smith and co. Have to take advantage. Hopefully in the win column and in the recruiting aspect.
I don’t think we’re in danger of losing Smith yet. Even with a successful season I think he would need another 1 or 2 to be able to be in the conversation for a job that could possibly lure him away. Lindgren is the one that I’m concerned about. I would be surprised if the offense keeps producing at this level if we’re able to keep him. I think we’ll offer him more money as they’ve shown they’ll do with Smith’s staff but IDK if it will be enough to overcome a blueblood oc job or a HC job if he’s interested.
Biggest threat is the next opponent. UW. If they don’t beat UW, beating USC means nothing.
And no one is coming for Smith. Not with a career 12-23 coaching record. Even with a great season he doesn’t coming close to breaking .500. What fan base would be happy with that hire?
Correct. UW is the biggest psychological hurdle for this team. The tanking of OSU really started in 2013 when we overlooked UW and lost 69-27 at home. We have gotten our asses handed to us by them ever since. It’s not Hole, or Stanford, or Utah, or Wazzu that has been the barrier between OSU and the promise land; it is the Leghumpers.
Every team in the Pac-12 can be competitive with one another. We just saw that with Arizona and Hole. There are no gimmes on the schedule. We could lose every single one, but we could also win every single matchup. If we’re talking about ranking the toughest opponents we (may) have left, I believe it goes:
1) UCLA
2) ASU
3) Oregon
4) Stanford
5) UW
6) Utah
7) Cal
8) WSU
9) Colorado
I’d bump Oregon up to 2) if KT is healthy.
Biggest threat is the next opponent. UW. If they don’t beat UW, beating USC means nothing.
Well said, Bill.
I’d add, and JS will too, that after that the most important game is the next opponent……every week.
as for someone going after Smith, it’s instructive that San Diego hired an 8-14 Riley after the ’98 season, and I have it on good authority that if the Chargers hadn’t signed him UW would have
You sayin’ Smith has the same loyalty as Riley? C’mon
I’m most worried about Cal and Stanford. Assuming we win out against UW, WSU and Utah then we will have a winning season going into cal. They are a good enough team to beat anyone in the pac on a good day and getting the winning season is going to be a huge deal for our team. I could see a mission accomplished type let down psychologically. Stanford is a classic trap, we could be facing two opponents at the end of the season where a win means we go to the championship game. Stanford is more than good enough to win and could make it very ugly if the team isn’t focused.
All that said this is the most resilient Oregon State team I have seen and it’s not new. They have been fighting and focused for 4 years.
Said it at the top and still believe:
Can JS keep his guys grounded? I think so, it’s one of his strengths.
Still on the Tibs train, he deserves some love for a few (albeit selected) stats showing improvement. Made these moves from 2020 to this point in the current season:
Points allowed per game: from #10 in the PAC to #5
Sacks per game: #10 to #3T
TFL per game: #7 to #3
Int/game: #4T to #2
Trending toward the top third I expected at the start of the season; and without Gumbs, McCartan, Hodgins.
Looks like Tibs too will earn a bump by seasons end.
Not on the Tibs train…
More selected stats
3rd down defense – 46.6% – 116th in the nation. Has not been in the top 100 in his tenure.
Redzone defense – 14 times opponents in redzone, scored 9 TDs and 3 FGs for 85.7% – 80th in the nation.
Even with a shutout, Beavs scoring defense isn’t in the top 50. He should have been able to produce at least an average to above average defense by now.
I’d be curious to see how many minutes our D is on the field vs the avg D. We score so often and quickly that they might just be on the field more.
Elijah the transfer from Kansas has some crazy abilities as well. I don’t think he has been able to play yet, or has been very limited. He could play a really big role on the tail end of the season as well
Elijah’s presence will allow us to play more nickel and dime coverages on third down that actually work. Those are the schemes we’ve struggled implementing since GA’s tenure. Hence, why teams convert 3rd and 7+.
We’re kind of stuck with implementing our base scheme on all downs until we get more DB’s healthy.
Gotta admit, Time of Possession doesn’t help ticket sales for the Tibs Train.
Beavs rank #32 nationally at 32:38. Good for #2 in the PAC right behind ASU.
http://www.cfbstats.com/2021/leader/905/team/offense/split01/category15/sort01.html
Strange. The D seems much better when watching. More pressure, more sacks, more turnovers than in years past.
That’s because you’ve gotten used to Tibs’ absolutely terrible defenses the last few years (and Clown’s before that).
OSU 35:39 – USC 25:21
OSU 32:27 – ISU 27:33
OSU 34:01 – HAW 25:59
OSU 25:26 – PUR 34:34
I’ll be on the tibs train if they can limit UW to less than 25. I think we can get some TOs against Morris. I like Wright’s playmaking ability and Julian and LBs. key will be stuffing the run. I’ll go with 42-24 Beavs.
Choose your seat, buddy, it’s gonna happen.
31-17
42 would be awesome. It’s been years since UW gave up more then 35
They needed OT to score 31 on Cal and they only scored 7 on Montana and 10 on Michigan. I’m as skeptical of our D as the next guy, but 25 seems doable.
I’m with you on that. Not a fan of tibs but gotta give credit that the defense has played well enough to win recently. Idaho obviously pads the stats but it still isn’t easy to pitch a shutout these days…although, I think ID had several fg opportunities but they went for it on 4th instead. Hopefully they’ve turned the corner but now we’re in conference play and we won’t be getting Hawaii and Idaho anymore. Maybe this historic win is the confidence boost that sets this team on the path to sustained success.
We’re right in the middle of the P12 and the country in yards per game. Our SOS is slightly below the median, so this probably says the defense is slightly below average, but it’s an improvement over previous years.
Still have the relatives until Friday, so I’ll be in and out (TWHS).
After watching that 6 play drive before halftime a few times, I am impressed with Nolan, and the recievers. He hit each guy in stride under pressure and each play was for a first down, and Nolan ran for 15 or so on the first play. Nolan, Lowe, Lindsay and Harrison are all from the transfer portal and have been here for a year, 4 star guys at receiver and #1 Juco qb are all paying off bigtime.
Just an impressive drive, the td throw was beautiful and Harrison’s disguised catch was incredible as he didn’t give any indication to the db it was coming until he caught it at the 3.
Nolan’s td to Lindsay over the middle was just as sweet of a throw. It was one of those passes that other qbs we have endured would have thrown a beat late and likely been picked throwing into triple coverage because it was a tick late. Nolan is elite and I apologize for ripping on him early on. He is fun and we finally found the qb with the IT factor who is a game changer. I think this is the year we have been waiting for. 11-1 regular season and a real shot at the Rose Bowl or Playoffs with this team, I expect to see continued dramatic improvements each week as they gain confidence and winning leads to more winning. I have zero concern about these guys being overconfident or overlooking anyone, nor will they wilt under added pressure. I think JS has done a masterful job to this point of recruiting the right guys, bringing in talent through the transfer portal, implementing the right system for the roster and showing tremendous promise for what may be coming in the next few years with the schemes and offensive philosophy.
UW will be overwhelmed by half-time and Beavs will roll- Huskies can only muster field goals to Beavs touchdowns. I expect multiple interceptions of Morris. He will sling it, but he is a turnover liability for them, Otton won’t be inactive also.
Beavs 42-16
The 1-minute drill was super impressive all throughout, outstanding by Nolan. And that 2nd Lindsay TD was the best pass of the game. Super tight window with three defenders in the area- NFL caliper throw. Doesn’t get better than that.
I’d easily take Nolan over any Beavs QB since I’ve been a fan. Though I’ll throw out the caveat that it’s only been about 13 years for me – I just missed the Matt Moore days. Job #1 should be making sure Nolan stays healthy and doesn’t try to do too much running.
Matt Moore had a game where he threw six picks against AZ. It took him a while to stop being a turnover machine.
Nolan struggled a bit last year, but out of all of the quarterbacks I’ve seen at OSU, he looks the most promising by far. More than Moevao, Canfield, Moore, Andersen, Smith, Mannion, etc. This guy could be Heisman-worthy if he doesn’t leave after his junior year next year. He’s not quite there yet because I doubt he can win us a game where we get behind big and he’s forced to throw it 50 times. Needs another year in the system to truly understand coverages and call audibles consistently, but he has the intangibles to get there.
Morris seemed like a horrible qb in the limited time I’ve seen him.
I thought he looked mediocre last year. He’ll make some throws, but in that game (and much of his career) he hasn’t shown the ability to push the ball downfield consistently and make big plays.
It’s pretty shocking UW can bring in as many highly-ranked QB’s as they do and still have only average QB play.
Smith made Jake Browning into a great college QB at uw. Their fans are very unhappy with the current oc. He isn’t helping his case. Last oc was fired after one season.
UW has run off a lot of high level qb recruits in the last few years. All transferred elsewhere.
Luton released by the Seahawks
Re-signed back to the practice squad as he cleared waivers. Seahawks don’t have a third QB … so makes sense that he was re-signed in case of injuries to Wilson or Smith. Plus, never hurts to have a developmental guy in the pipeline.
Sounds like UW has 3 starting receivers returning from injury. Sounds like Otton is out, any other significant injuries on the UW side?
Top defensive player CB Trent McDuffie missed Cal after getting hurt against ArSU. They started a walk-on in his place against Cal. I haven’t seen what his status is yet.
What I’m really looking for in this game is can we contain their pretty anemic 102 ypg rushing attack. We’re 22nd in the country with 90 ypga. There’s no question the Washington line and backs should have a large star advantage. In the past this is the kind of game where we randomly allow 300+ and make the huskies look like contenders.
If we can continue suffocating the run it’s going to force Morris into bad decisions and throws.
Richard Newton is back in the lineup this week, too.
With Otton out, we should be able to play our base defense more and still maintain a good matchup between our OLB’s and their (weakened) TE corps. I don’t see a need to put Julian on their TE’s, so the DB’s may also have the matchup advantage against their WR’s. Matching someone like Colletto on their remaining TE frees up one of the ILB’s to rush the QB consistently.
All of these are reasons why we should win the turnover battle and have multiple sacks.

NB has said in the past about how we have been after this guy even during his commitment to Utah. Could we see him be a beav soon?
He would be our highest rated commit
And we will teach him how to spell
All caps makes it so you don’t have to capitalize. Next level
There – their
Apart – a part
Is that grammar or spelling?
Both?
Looks like both according to the internet. Technically a grammar error since he didn’t spell the words incorrectly but the root cause was spelling the wrong word.
My elementary school liked to ask, what word is spelled wrong in the dictionary?
Nice Beav – we still in the running for this guy? Does he project as an OLB/EDGE?
Nemec has an article on this. Sounds like Beavs are definitely in the running and he’s already been talking to coaches about a visit. Obviously going to have a lot of competition for him but Beavs for sure are in the mix based on his article.
He’s listed as 6’3 220 years on his schools roster. One of those guys that could go edge or DE. Big frame. He pushes around big linemen scary easy.
Him and Quincy in one class would be proof that the hire powers consider the beaver a holy rodent.
Don’t forget MMD.
Can you imagine our 3/4 top recruits being DL (and the other being a LB).
I can’t haha
DB Jojo Forest has entered the transfer portal
Wonder if staff knew this as we offered 2 or 3 JC db’s yesterday. Or maybe still going after JC talent was writing on the wall fot him to move on. Best of luck wherever he lands.
His weight is listed as 170 on the OSU website.
That just seems dangerous when playing on the defensive side of the ball. Granted, he has recorded tackles in multiple games.
Jonathan Riley’s surgery pics looked pretty gnarly too. Wonder if he decides to play again or retire. If it were me, I wouldnt want to put my leg through that again.
Hmmm….
The last time we had a spot open(Madison), it was filled pretty by Chatfield’s transfer. Wonder if they have another one lined up? Last day to be added to fall term is October 3rd(or Oct10th with special approval), so there’s still time to get someone’s calendar started, although i’m not sure how important the start date is anymore with transfer waivers
I mentioned this earlier in the season. He was a starter as a freshman and then disappeared off the depth chart. Kind of strange.
It’s too bad the QB depth chart is a bit thin right now with Gebbia and Gulbranson out. Having them both back may have permitted converting Noyer back to safety, and have him in the rotation towards the end of the season. The guy can tackle and understands coverages fairly well.
We struggle implementing nickel, dime, and quarter packages, so it would seem logical to move someone with prior experience on the bench into the rotation.
Noyer has more game experience at QB than safety. He was only a safety for one year at Colorado, and I’m not sure he had any game time.
With the emergence of our running game, I’m more confident that Vidlak could provide solid depth if called on. The coaches could simplify the passing playbook a bit for him and he would be fine.
I wouldn’t call Gebbia out. He suits up every game and warms up. He must have aggravated his hammy, but it’s not torn again. He probably is able to do some stuff, just maybe not sprint.
Wouldn’t move Noyer at all. Can’t have enough QB depth.
I was at the Purdue game and while he did dress, saying he was activity warming up would be a stretch. Now it’s been a month and he might be doing better, he was far from ready then.
I was told Gebbia had another setback recently, but have no idea how serious. Will see if I can get more details.
He also didnt make the trip to USC, even though he did travel to Purdue. And he’s a Cali guy, so you’d think they would have had him there in the sidelines calling plays at least.
Sprinting is kind of a useful activity to be able to do when playing in a football game. Gebbia has been and is definitely “out”.
Only if you want to do well
More about Aisea Moa: Aisea Moa, 4-star defensive lineman, decommits from Utah, calls Oregon State Beavers ‘absolutely an option’
Following that announcement, the 6-foot-2, 240-pound defensive lineman, out of Weber High School (Ogden, Utah), told The Oregonian/OregonLive that Oregon State could soon become a major factor in his second recruitment and he has already discussed a potential visit with the coaching staff.
“They are absolutely an option,” Moa said. “I have talked to them about coming out to a game. We will see how that goes.”
Big if true.
https://www.oregonlive.com/recruiting/2021/09/aisea-moa-4-star-defensive-lineman-decommits-from-utah-calls-oregon-state-beavers-absolutely-an-option.html
We’ve been an option since before June. I think it was June 1st or 2nd when they hosted him on an uofficial visit and he wasnt trying to hide that from Utah.
The most recent response I have received regarding a potential official visit was much more up in the air though, so hopefully this is a sign that things are improving.

Interesting that we are #41 while Purdue is #59. I think that we would be a lot closer in terms of ranking with Purdue have the higher ranking given their only loss is to a ranked Notre Dame team and they did beat us head-to-head.
Dennis Dodd spends 6 minutes with Chance Nolan.
I imagine JS and staff keep demands for this kind of interview under control, could be a real distraction if not limited.
https://sports.yahoo.com/dennis-dodd-talks-oregon-states-234317640.html
I have a few JUCO CBs who are most likely going to visit OSU during the bye week in October. I’ll put their names in here once theyre finalized.
This week’s visit list will be pretty small again, but we’ll have several unofficial visitors in attendance. Too bad they dont have a few more officials cause it should be a nice weekend weather wise
I hope the team is more focused on UW than many of us here are! Lots of talk about possibilities and games weeks out, which is great for fans. : )
I am pretty confident Smith will have them focused. The desire to perform well against and defeast his former team and former fellow coordinator must be galvanizing.
This article has a few tidibits from Lake that are worth a quick read. Much of it is not, but you can scan through it. I didn’t realize Lake played on the EWU team that played OSU close the year OSU won the Fiesta Bowl:
https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/uw-husky-football/everything-uw-huskies-coach-jimmy-lake-said-in-his-oregon-state-week-press-conference/
I just have an odd feeling about the game Saturday. Still think it’ll be a W but I think Beaver Nation will be surprised how well the Leghumpers play.
Or, OSU wins 42-0 and I can turn off the game after three quarters and sleep easy.
I think the fan base is definitely getting ahead of itself here, but the way both teams have played through 4, I’m really surprised so many in the media are still picking UW. It might take wining this one for outsiders to finally believe in this team instead of seeing the USC win as just a surprise upset.
UW isn’t going to be a push over and I’m sure the team knows that. (Hoping they know that)
““I don’t think we’re satisfied,” starter Drew Rasmussen said. “We still have a chance to win 100 games.”
Rasmussen and three relievers combined for a three-hitter” “Rasmussen (4-1) allowed one hit over five innings.”

Oob, just had time to read your post and see you went 31-17. Didn’t see that when making my prediction, so that’s super weird.
I’m changing it to 31-24 because there’s just too much “beavs have arrived” sentiment floating around. Too much talk about last week, too.
https://twitter.com/angrybeavs/status/1443587090965417987
31-17 or 31-24, Vegas still pays.
Beav in OH has the right idea, this is likely the last “easy” pick vs Vegas as the country begins to learn what JS has going.
Yes, just thought it was weird we picked the same score. You narrowing yours after seeing the player and media behavior this week?
Narrowing for sure, nudged that way by the Nolan interview linked above. Still feel-2.5 is safe.
Does he sound overconfident?
Doesn’t sound particularly overconfident. Could be just me, but I’d have liked to hear more team oriented responses. Dodd’s questions may be a factor there.
Overall, I just don’t like the distraction of too many media appearances. Probably should be glad to have that problem but, still, it gives the staff one more locker room item to manage.
Angry’s take below points out some good elements, maybe I’m behind the times on this stuff.
Start giving players the Crash Davis (Bull Durham) crash course on media interactions:
“You’re gonna have to learn your clichés, “You’re gonna have to study them, you’re gonna have to know them. They’re your friends:”
We gotta play ’em one day at a time.
I’m just happy to be here. Hope I can help the ballclub.
I just want to give it my best shot, and the good lord willing, things will work out.”
https://edge.twinspires.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-sports-cliches/
Go 1-0 every week. They have been saying that since spring ball. This week’s game is a huge test of that philosophy. You have a talented but underperforming opponent in UW who could suddenly use a road win against the Beavs to turn their season around and a team riding high off a huge dominating performance.
A few things work in our favor to not have hype influence performance.
1. Film study will show There was a ton of shit to clean up from the USC game. Defensive penalties.. drops.. several protection breakdowns that Nolan’s awareness was able to nullify. The coaches got a lot of ready made areas to focus and harp on to not let any egos get too high.
2. The opponent being JS ‘s old team. He would never allude to it but naturally he has some extra motivation for his first win over the Dawgs. If this team truly is built in his image this should manifest.
3. Last year. Damm near everyone one on the squad was around for last years UW game that we should have won. Their should be extra motivation to get this years game and leave no doubt.
Love seeing the #32 pepper-jack pastrami sandwich in my recruiting feed. So funny.
I was trying to decide where to get lunch on gameday and it made me super hungry last night. I used to work at Togos back in the day, but they didnt have that #32 sandwich at the time. Looks tasty
I like the idea of recruiting the #32 sandwich. Just made me laugh seeing it in the feed.
We need that meat in the middle, bring in #32!
Well, that IS Schad’s number…
Ha! I had a second story apartment in a building on that block or just down a block(?). Was great, right across the street from campus, parking behind building, and it wasn’t obvious the apartments were above the businesses. I’d get hungry smelling Togo’s shop though.
Togo’s in Corvallis was one of the few if not the only one with a grill. As a result, the “Bomb” was one of the best sandwiches around.
They should change it to #12 and name it “The Pepper-Jack Hammer Pastrami” or “The Crazy Pepper-Jack Pastrami” and give Jack Colletto an endorsement deal promoting Togo’s.
Nobody’s mentioned Lowe’s motivation this week. It should be extra high, and while i don’t expect Lindgren to feature Lowe because Lowe formerly played for the huskies, I won’t be surprised if we don’t see some nice plays from Lowe or some key blocks. I expect Lowe’s priority will be a team win.
My favorite part of his game so far is his blocking. Really key a few times this year.
I’m dieing to see him on a rb screen
NIL opportunities potentially in the works for Nolan. Hope he’s not distracted by it. He and his family are being proactive, having somebody else manage his marketing rights and opportunities. That should help him stay focused.
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2021/09/oregon-state-quarterback-chance-nolan-is-hot-can-he-cash-in-with-name-image-and-likeness-deals.html
Think of all the tag lines they’ll have with “Chance.”
What would he endorse that people would buy?
Will start Geo Local and then hopefully branch out from there. Tangible purchase conversions is not the only goal. For some businesses / brands the additional awareness an influencer / athlete can generate is super valuable.
So this will likely start small. Think of the HGI doing an off peak promotion during Spring Ball for folks to come stay at a discounted rate with the “Chance Nolan special.” They offer a meet and greet with signings for a few select post practice days. HGI get more beds sold. Chance gets paid everyone is happy.
Also, he’s a sophomore (!).
If he continues this level of play for 1-2 more years as a Beaver, and meaningful bowl games ensue, his endorsements would mean more in terms reaching a wider audience.
His character, work ethic, and progressive path to success could be attractive to certain businesses.
Just had a chance to watch the Nolan interview. Good personality. Low key and seems pretty humble, but you can see he has a bigger plan for himself (putting in the work commuting hours, transferring, etc).
Checking the OSU site for tickets, still a good amount available esp on the old side. Prices should keep UW fans away.
I’d guess the paid attendance will be 30-33k but more will actually show up. Idaho and Hawaii had about 30-40 percent seats filled.
If you go, head into the game early. Staffing shortages have led to long lines. The long lines are not due to the COVID vax check. That’s barely enforced. Hopefully they’ve hired a lot of students to help now that they are on campus. Super easy job.
It’s deceiving too. It appears large blocks of the upper deck “valley” seats have sold, but then you go on Stubhub and Seatgeek and can see that the school is just selling those blocks over on those sites, and there are still a shitload of seats left.
Ticket selling is not a very transparent process anymore, with lots of price manipulation on the fly to try and adjust for demand. Problem is, there’s just no demand
Terrible way to manage a relationship w/a fan base, particularly when expansion looms, and there’s a need to secure season ticket buyers.
Be transparent. If this approach is necessitated by staffing shortages, say so and point people towards these services.
OSU, in general, just seems to be a lot less transparent these days in all sorts of matters. It’s starting to really bother me as someone who graduated in the late 90’s.
I could just be reading it wrong, but Moa has been liking and entertaining a lot of BYU stuff the last day or so. Might need to keep an eye on that.
Phil Knight and a bunch of Oregon alum who never quite achieved their dreams are stepping up the NIL game at uofo.
Sounds alot like the pooling of resources that gym owner at Miami organized, where wealthy alum pay into a pot that then gets allocated to student athletes(well….basketball and football athletes).
https://twitter.com/DarrenHeitner/status/1443581012731039745?s=19
oh. i am. so. surprised.
We knew Knight would use resources to develop a more sophisticated and lucrative NIL system. Nike knows how to market shit, so it should be effective in attracting more talent. How they play will be another issue.
The closer the game gets, the more nervous I am about not necessarily a let down but just the fact that every week is different due to every matchup being different (Yes, Angry I agree with you). USC was not physical at all. Washington will be. Everything this week was about the program being back and all these accolade’s with player of the week etc. I just really hope they stick to what smith said with the not done yet thing and keep feeling disrespected.
I’m glad the refs tried to screw them over last weekend. It will happen again and they handled it well.
That’s a natural feeling I think. Probably for the players too. Maybe USC wasn’t physical, but OSU was, even its receivers. I think if UW is physical, OSU will be up to it. The game isn’t a given, and should be more competitive than USC, but I still think OSU will win.
Last year the feeling was the same after beating Oregon. Could have been program defining but they lost the rest of the games. But much different circumstances this year. Same QB, starting RB will play and it’s at home.
I see a lot of semi-fan shaming going on to get attendance. Idk why anyone thinks that will help. This team has been awful since 2008 and entire generations of fans have had better things to do than watch the program slide into the garbage.
If we actually have a winning season then we will start getting attendance.
I mean, I’ve personally spoken with people around the program who are expecting the fans to show up and sell most of the place out, and will see it as disrespect for the players if that doesnt happen.
They should be prepared to be disappointed Saturday.
Our ticket office hasnt done them any favors either. I know this is the “premier” game this season cause it’s UW and we dont have UofO, but jacking seat prices up when people arent quite sold on this team isnt going to encourage anybody to attend.
NB, you need a refresher on the comment about OSU being awful since 2008. 2008 9-4, 2009 8-5, 2012 9-4 and 2013 7-6.
That’s what I get for posting while falling asleep. Thanks for the corrections
No worries. They were good for 4 out of those years but weren’t world beaters
I think you mean that 28 season stretch where the team barely cracked .500
That is a generation long; it will not fade with time or falling asleep! ?
Did NOT crack .500 for that entire period! When you lose, your record is below .500.
I lived it. It sucked!
And each of those seasons ended with a loss to the D*cks….makes those seasons feel like failure even if winning record.
Late stage Riley was just incredibly unsatisfying. The offense and defense got so predictable. Playing down to opponents. Losing in a dumb manner.
If nothing else Smith era is exciting. Only game I didn’t enjoy was that Utah slaughter in 2019
….and I was there!!!! That was horrible.
Lindgren apparently telling the O they can’t expect to score w/short, 3-4-play drives against UW, but will need sustained drives of 9-11 plays. I think he’s prepping them for a more physical and challenging defense.
I’m excited for the game and reasonably confident the Beavs won’t show up emotionally flat and deliver a steaming pile of a trap game, but the risk is certainly there and it’s to be expected in such circumstances. I expect it to be a pretty tough and close game, but super ok with my expectations being invalidated by a Beavs blowout. I’m also flinched and prepared for the remote off-chance it could go the other way (Luck o da Beavs trauma?).
I’m a believer, but I feel like we ought to pump the breaks on the “special season” and “12-1 CFP bound” kind of anticipation a bit, and take it one week at a time. If they absolutely boat-race and out-class UW and make them look like they need relegated to the Pac-12 JV division like the Beavs were on the regular for a handful of years, then we can talk about those kind of outcomes. UW is “rebuilding”, but it’s league play and they have a talented roster. I expect them to show up and play a really tough and physical game wanting to make a statement against a rival team that just torched the Trojans.
+100 Zen…
I spent my first couple of years out of OSU almost exclusively gambling on sports as my income (and expense). Living in SF, spent way too many hours in the back of old Italian neighborhood bars with Guido (shows how old I am) either collecting or promising I’d have the cash by next week.
Good times–but realized I got lucky and finally bolted to PDX before I blew the $1,000’s of dollars I had in my closet in the next week.
Long story short–the one lesson I learned from gambling is the rebound effect. Teams get overvalued after a great performance and generally regress to the mean. It’s very unusual to have a spread to cross from positive to negative, let alone 6.5 points. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that before without a key injury.
Believe me–I’m all in on a win. If I’m wrong with my concerns above, I’d be happy to eat crow. But as Corso says, “Not so fast, my friends”
Beavers 27-24
Good point, but I’ll offer one counterpoint- the national narrative that the Beavs are bad is so pervasive that it can take the spread a really long time to catch up.
I remember the best GA season (2016?) when we were pretty bad overall but had a legit defense. We were 11-1 ATS that year, and usually we crushed the spread number. Most weeks we lost but didn’t yield many points, but we kept seeing spreads of +15 or more – and often in the +25 neighborhood. I would have killed for a way to legally bet on the team, so I just bet with whatever friends and coworkers that I could. I’d always take the Beavs to cover, and won every bet I made that year. Would have made some serious cash if I had the opportunity to…
Agree about the national narrative thing. Also, isn’t it possible that the two fan bases and their willingness to lay down the $ is a factor here?
Over enthused Beav fans and disappointed dawg fans could have forced vegas to make the move to entice more dawg dollars?
ADDED: Line now showing -1/2 at FanDuel, -1 and -1.5 on others.
GA had a legit defense?
I wouldn’t say they were “legit”. The D-line was underwhelming.
The secondary was very good, though. Crawford, Decoud, Chappell, and Arnold won us a few games.
Where/how do you bet on college sports? I’ve tried setting up draft kings and the like, but being in sw Washington, does not allow me to bet yet. Curious as I would like to do a little bit here and there
Spirit Mtn Casino, on the way to the beach for you. Operated as part of BetMGM, have to be on the premises to bet and no requirement to show ID
Yeah he really did. Sure the D-line wasn’t great, but they were constantly put into bad situations by the utterly incompetent offense and were on the field all game every game. That was the Darrell Garrettson / Conor Blount experience. Also the year that McMaryion finally got to play via injuries and promptly went 2-0 beating AZ and OR (first Civil War win since 2007).
We finished 4-8 that year on a 2 game winning streak with a CW win and a lot of close games along the way, and were all feeling pretty good about GA and the program trajectory. Defense was solid, and we finally found a QB. And then 2017 happened, the most epic meltdown imaginable.
All that to say, GA of course goes down as a horrible coach- but that doesn’t change the fact that 2016 was a decent team with a solid D. And just think if McMaryion had started all year.
Beavs haven’t played much D for the last 14 years or so. Only two years really stand out to me:
2012 (Poyer and Paea headlining)
2016 (Strong secondary top to bottom)
2021? So far so good.
2012 had *Crichton, not Paea
My gambling days were pre-internet. My go to source was the “National” (Anyone remember that sports weekly?) That and picking KDWN-AM up out of Las Vegas each night to listen to the tout shows.
I had buddies that would call me everyday from NYC and DC to get my picks. Focused on MAC and other minor leagues as there was such a lack of information. My bookie was like WTF? Why are you betting $500 on a Miami Ohio-Western Michigan hoop game?
I understand the perception–but the numbers are so tight these days. Linemakers don’t usually miss by 6.5-What makes me nervous is what you mentioned-good defense. That will help cover big spreads…not sure if our defense is there yet. I want to be wrong.
OT
Who is this Mick Jagger guy and how did he end up at The Thirsty Beaver which, apparently,” is one of Charlotte’s most famous dive bars”?
https://www.yahoo.com/news/waiting-friend-mick-jagger-seen-150750396.html
“…Jagger appeared to be drinking a Miller Lite or a “Mick Ultra,” err, Michelob Ultra”
Ugh…….say it isn’t so
Jagger seems to be pretty mellow that way. I was on plane coming back from San Jose, CA many years ago and one of The Stones promoter/tour manager was seated in front of me. The dude starting using the airplane phone before take-off, talking loudly to the person on the other end about The Stones concert that was canceled and rescheduled. He suddenly stood up and said, “does anyone want to say Hi to Mick”. Of course, I was too scared or confused, but a female flight attendant took him up on the offer and seemed pretty sure it was Mick after a minute or two of conversation. I’m still kicking myself!
I have tons of celebrity stories between my first wife, second wife, and growing up in LA. First was a flight attendant, so had free flights everywhere. Got called up to gate in Burbank-nonrevs are always last. Only other guy at the gate waiting for a ticket-Carlos Santana. She’s asking for ID, he looks at me and starts laughing.
Don’t get me started with Neil Schon, a urinal, and Robin Trower.
Too many fresh hops in Bend tonight.
OT as well…
Boise State has informed the Mountain West that it does not plan on joining a P5 conference. Same with San Diego State.

Zach Reichles younger brother Jake will be visiting OSU this weekend(unofficial visit)
He’s grown into his frame recently and is now a pretty good sized and productive Safety/WR for Lakeridge HS.
I could see him getting potentially an offer this weekend, so could be worth keep an eye on.

In a recent interview, Jim WIlson said he thinks something is “off” with the Husky program and it is indicative in team chemistry and results. Jim says UW has nearly all starters returning but can’t run the ball, nor stop the run, see Michigan stats.
If they can’t stop the run, Beavs will maul them. If they can’t run the ball, and MOrris can’t throw downfield that well, Beavs will get interceptions as they become one dimensional.
I think Jimmy Lake is in over his head, and JS will be able to keep the foot on the gas offensively. Beavs win in another dominant outing. 45-16

Thanks guys. Lots of worthwhile stuff there in addition to the comments of BIG JIM.
For those who want to focus on his portion, it begins at 1:35:15.
Prior to that several minutes of Dave from Tumwater relating a recent interview with Adley Rutschman.
I think Angry highlighted this in a previous thread, but the body language of UW players as they watched their team lose to Montana in the opener said a lot.
I was surprised when Puka Nacua transferred prior to this season. He was their star receiver.
As mentioned above BYU in the mix for Moa
https://247sports.com/Article/College-Football-Recruiting-2022-class-4-star-DL-Aisea-Moa-Miami-Oregon-State-BYU-Utah-Tennessee-Baylor-UCLA-172087621/
Like they didn’t care, or like they were upset about losing and needed to change things?
Doesn’t OSU play Montana State in Portland in a year or two?
It looked like they didn’t really care.
They cared enough to beat a good Cal team in overtime, so a lot has probably changed.
We play MSU in Portland next season.
Interesting about chemistry. It’s something difficult to develop and maintain, probably more so if you’re overly concerned about player rankings.
I think Smith’s team has chemistry. A real team feel, like Lindsey saying he “loves being part of a team win.” The motto that Smith apparently promotes “Excellence without arrogance.” Big egos can be dangerous to a group if not “used” properly, yet a healthy ego can help one persevere through difficult times. He keeps egos in check and lets players play through challenges. They don’t get taunting or celebration penalties, nor does their focus and mindset get derailed by a string of bad calls.
The team’s desire to compete and lack of quit is epitomized from a DB grabbing a leg and hanging on until others show up to gang tackle, to Baylor running through contact, to Colleto making tackles, interceptions, and running TDs. If you want to work hard, compete, you get opportunities. Smith was a competitor as a player and he’s a competitor as a coach.
You get 3*+ talent on the same page, you can do a lot. Smith is building a base of genuine 3*s and bringing in a mix of four stars.
And with Lindgren, Smith has a great offensive scheme and play calling. With Tisebar, the jury is out pending consistent league play with legitimate DTs. Lindgren’s earning his paycheck, Tisebar gets one through 2022 to prove himself IMO.
I recall the 2000 team having a bunch of big egos. Then 2001 hit. First was the loss to Fresno on the road. Then, two weeks later, they got blown out at home against UCLA on prime time ABC. That team really was never the same.
Smith probably learned from that experience and informs his players about that time. Some of those players experienced those same high-low points under GA. I think that’s why we’ve had such effective leadership from the seniors.
It’s hard to climb to prosperity, but only takes a few games to destroy everything. Saturday will be a test.
That team lost most of the Oline and Dline. That was the reason for the underperformance, not the egos. Smith and Simonton returned so everyone assumed they would be as good or better. But without the strong line play and loss of all three wide receivers (TJ, Chad, Prescott) and Maurer at TE was too much to overcome.
I’ll put a vote in for the O line being a huge factor with the Beavs current success.
Just noticed something about UW. Since 2018 they have brought in 6 transfers and lost 22. The net star exchange is crazy too. They might be the worst team I have seen for utilizing the transfer portal.
One of those transfers is Fresno’s QB Haener. I’m much happier with us facing Morris.
Where did the outgoing transfers end up? P5 or lower level programs? That could tell you a lot about their scouting/the bias of the ranking system.
Top tier programs like OSU (Lowe) wr is at Utah, former qb at UCLA just to name a few
Lots of P5 and some of the better mid tiers like Fresno. I think 3 or 4 of Fresno’s starters are UW recruits.
I’m glad Haener is graduating before we face Fresneck next year!
Me too, he’s a gamer
If the Beavs go on a history-making run this season, playing Fresno next year could be negative deja vu. I think the Beavs got crushed on national tv by Fresno the year after the Fiesta Bowl.
NB, any thoughts on Jaelin Green?
https://247sports.com/Player/Jaelin-Green-46057419/
2022, 6’5 WR from WA. Best offers are Colorado and OSU. Visited USC last week (so it was kinda like an OSU visit) and will be in Corvallis this weekend.
Pretty much all i know at this point too. Found his tweet last night and added it to the feed.
He visited USC last week with 5* OL/DL Josh Connerly. Wouldnt mind if he brought Josh along with him again.
Will find out more today
Josh Connerly has been pretty high on UW and USC at various points. Having him watch us beat down two of his favorites and fall in love with the program would be the coup of the century.
He had eliminated OSU from his top schools quite awhile ago, so I’m not optimistic at all about him even visiting. But anything is possible, I suppose.
Imagine how many heads will pop if both OSU and Stanford win this weekend.
First place baby!
Oh I have zero hope. It would just be awesome. It’s not really logical to expect us to ever get 5 stars. Jackson, Seumalo and Anderson are the only ones I think we have had and Jackson and Anderson are from long before star ratings were ‘accurate’ at all.
I think if we are top 3 in the conference consistently and a 5 star comes along from the Beaver State then we would have a chance..although many other good NIL opportunities elsewhere so maybe not so fast…
Maryland, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Purdue (w/ Karlaftis), and Northwestern have all landed local 5-stars in recent years. It’s possible.
Best bet is probably a 5* recruit who happens to have strong family ties to the university already, like a Seumalo.
Or potentially a transfer who didnt work out elsewhere like Tyner
I am curious about the lack of offers? Lack of speed? Poor hands? Academics? Or just not known well?
His Twitter says ‘4.0 GPA, 4.5 40,” for whatever that’s worth.
Husky recruiting article says he’s a big UW fan and wants a UW offer. Sounds like he’s just now growing into his height and working on speed, and COVID disrupted things for him. He’s best friends with Conerly, who is the top recruit in WA and offers just about everywhere.
mens soccer beat #23 UCLA 4-3, beavs will ranked again
Where we at with injuries for both the pups and the Beavs? McDuffie playing? Otton confirmed out?
Also, when is Hodgins expected back? Aren’t we around the 6 week mark by now?
According to JS, Hodgins won’t play and Daschel’s take was “his tone of voice indicated he won’t be back for WSU, either.” We have a bye week after WSU.
UW media says Otton is “probably out.” No word on McDuffie. Sounds like Lake has been cagey on all that, but the general sense is that UW is slowly getting healthier.
It seems the D line is working out pretty well with the absence of Hodgins. Add a healthy and fresh Hodgins for the second half of the season and that could work out really well.
Agree. Let him get fully healthy. Both games are challenging but winnable, and a healthy Hodgins coming off a bye week would be a great addition and give him time for additional practices reps.
With examples like Hodgins, Tongue, Dunmore, and the transfer DB (Molden?), it seems like OSU is shaping up to add in talent later in the season, which not only provides depth, but physical players for which opponents won’t have much film.
Relatives are gone. I’ll have a game thread up tomorrow.
Here’s my prediction, beavers 28 – 24 and I think this becomes more of a defensive game than last week. The beavers owe payback to the huskies for last year’s getting jobbed.
Line down to -1. Wonder if the pros made head fake bets to move the line down and are betting heavy on UW now. But it was probably just a bad opening line.
PHIL STEELE REPORT:
After going 6-1 vs UW from ‘04-’11, OSU has dropped the last 9 (3-6 ATS) to the Huskies (avg loss by 23 ppg) with OSU having 3 different head coaches in that span. Last year Oregon St trailed by 3 at HT but was held scoreless in the 2H in a 27-21 (+14) loss UW had a 408-252 yd edge. Last time here (‘19), Washington posted a 19-7 win (-10). UW opened a shocking 0-2 despite a 14-2 FD edge at half vs Montana and only being outgained by 44 yds in the Big House. They righted the ship whipping Ark St 52- 3 and last week UW was without TE Otten, CB McDuffie and TE Westover. UW punted on 1st poss but scored TD’s on next 3 drives to lead 21-7 with Cal getting FG at :00 21-10 H. UW up 24-17 fumble Cal
37 4Q, miss 47 yd FG Cal 62/9 for TD 2:51 left 24-24. Cal miss 55 yd FG :00. UW TD and Cal fumble at 1 in OT, UW 31-24 win. OSU lost at Purdue by 9 then got a late score to cover vs Hawaii and blanked Idaho 42-0. Last week Oregon St ended a 24 gm losing streak in the Coliseum with its first win there since 1960 in interim HC Williams first home game. OSU led 21-17 H. OSU TD’s 1st 3 poss 3Q to lead 42- 17 and won 45-27 with 535-431 yd edge. This is a do or die game for Washington which still controls its destiny in winning the Pac 12 and they are an underdog to Oregon St for the first time since 2012 (favored in the last 6 by 22.6 ppg!).

So…every one of their models has us winning, but they pick UW? Also, how do their DB’s have a massive advantage over our passing game?
And the UW coaching staff have a an advantage over OSU…. Lol okay
That Phil Steele stuff is pointless. Might as well run the game via your PS4 sim and save the subscription fees.
Are Steele’s predictions demonstrably more accurate than those of his competition? Or an objective standard such as a Vegas line? That would be an interesting research project for someone.
I think both teams will show up motivated and ready to play. I think WA will play tougher than expected but I think the Beavs are just the better team. 31-21 good guys.
Side note: I think being the favorite in this game does legitimately impact the officiating. That’s the downside to being an underdog in this conference.
@NB, thanks for the list of visitors. Looks like Melvin Jordan is going to be here if I’m understand the “members” correctly I am worried about his commitment but noticed he commented on Brays bday post the other day. Glad he will be coming out for a visit.
Pretty good group of unofficial visitors coming. The contact who filled me in gave me a long list of names and ended it with “etc.”, so i can only assume there will be several more names that didnt make the cut in our message.
Jordan is an unofficial visitor btw, so pretty cool he’a visiting on his own dime.
Takari Hickle would he there but he has a Saturday game this weekend.
Looking at how other teams have attacked the beavs defense, I would expect UW to test the beavs secondary early and often. USC passed on early downs at a very high rate.
USC got 355 through the air and add on about 100 yards in penalty yardage. One difference is that UWs QB isn’t a great passer. Prone to throw picks and beavs secondary have an extraordinary amount of picks so far. He’s not necessarily a runner but can move when needed.
I suspect the beavs will pressure UW up the middle. Keep him in the pocket so he can’t scramble or force him to roll to one side. If they can force him into bad throws, it’ll be a long game for UW.
On offense, more of the same. Attack the edges with speed and up the middle with power. Let Nolan complete high percentage throws early and then open up the field after wearing down UWs front 7.
Agree. I felt USC was always a step behind with the play calls by Lindgren. He often had them guessing and the yardage came easy. Figured if it wasn’t for penalties and the int in the redzone, the offense really wouldn’t have been stopped in the first half.
“I suspect the beavs will pressure UW up the middle. Keep him in the pocket so he can’t scramble or force him to roll to one side. If they can force him into bad throws, it’ll be a long game for UW. ”
I think NuclearBeav has suggested that the recruiting of tall DE/LBs/CBs is based on that strategy. Wright, Austin, Grant, Julian et al aren’t going to back down or quit playing physical coverage. Morris’s TD:INT is 6:5, and his completion percentage is 58%. That’s old school percentage and terrible ratio. It could pay off in probably 2 INTs by the Beavers. So, maybe they get some pass yards between the 20’s. That’s ok.
Steven Jackson must have read Angry’s post ;)

Sweet! Down in the same Twitter feed Oregon State women’s soccer beat Stanford on the road for the first time. Lots of “firsts” going around for Beav sports in general!
And in the same feed Hadley Heck joins Beaver sports….
Nice. From what I can see on my phone, she’s pretty cute!

Who has Monopoly Man artwork?
What jersey color we going with tomorrow? (I match my game day shirt to the teams)
Orange uni
Black helmet
Theyre calling for an orange out, but with a half empty stadium it wont look right
They did a big discount on tickets so I heard that it’s supposed yo be a pretty decent show out. Hopefully something around 30,000.
From Blitz:
Raju Woodword: “Look for Chance Nolan to establish his case as a darkhorse Heisman candidate.”
Is this guy smoking crack?
He then goes on to say, “this one will be closer than one might think, but OSU prevails 31-24.”
Gee, it’s almost as if he reads AB’s, which I know he does from past interactions/stalking.
He would have to have a hell of a game to be a dark horse. We’re talking 300+ and 4+ TD against one of the best pass defense teams of the last decade.
I’d be thrilled but yeah he’s on something super good.
I’m holding strong with 38-17. Beavs end the streak and score more on the huskies than any team in the last 7 years (UCLA dropped 44 on them in 2014).
If we abandon the run and try to make Nolan a Heisman candidate, yeah, 31-24, or closer.
If we persistently run the ball and use Nolan to compliment that, we win big.
Smith better not try to get too cute with the play calling. Run the ball.
Nobody’s going to try and make Nolan a Heisman candidate this weekend. Its early in the sesaon, and the sample size is small and variable, but UW is giving up 165 rush YPG so running the ball has to remain an emphasis. OSU will run the ball, likely similar to what they did against USC with fly sweeps and TEs in to block, with variety so its not predictable, and showing similar/same looks as against USC, bur run something else out of the formation.
I hope they don’t try to use the pass to set up the run, but I don’t think they will. Trust the blocking, run the ball, and be patient. It’ll make for a faster game, maybe lower score, but entertaining football.
The Beavers have diverse WR depth that is i think surprisingly difficult to account for, RB depth, an extra-motivated Lowe, and QB who makes good decisions. In fact, a good thing Nolan can do if UW’s defense is stout, is just throw it away and avoid negative plays. That can get demoralizing for a D.
Lake did say they’d put 1 and/or 2 spies on Nolan. Of course he wanted that read, but when they do that, there’s somebody open somewhere.
That makes the edges and deep post/slant super vulnerable. Could be a monster day for TE
Hate to be the bearer of bad predictions but I’m see 31-28 piss puppies. That was too big a win for this team not to be reading their own headlines. I was wrong last week and will be thrilled if I’m wrong this week.
BTW, why would you make this your mascot?
https://youtu.be/V8tvi_PexhM
Maybe it reminded the founders of their wives? Different times.
I remember I think it was 2003 (my Freshman year), we had started 5-1 and favored pretty heavily with UW coming to town for Dad’s weekend and it was just real ugly and demoralizing and ended up 38-17. Luck o da beavs truama rolls deep.
https://osubeavers.com/sports/football/stats/2003/washington/boxscore/3090
Yup that sucked
It makes me uncomfortable that I predicted that for this weekend for the beavs.
This is not the Don James or Chris Peterson Huskies. And they are not good. They needed OT to beat a weak Cal team last weekend. They needed some home cookin from the refs last year in Seattle to win. These guys remember that.
Relax. Beavs win this one. Easily
We’ve lost by 42 to Sarkisian’s Huskies before.
Think of how bad it’d been if he was sober.
Watching Iowa-Maryland. This Hawkeye team is very impressive and would take Hole to the woodshed.
Petras PTSD
He’s a GA QB recruit so he can’t be that good, right? At least he was smart enough to avoid the train wreck.
He’s helped by one of the best defenses out there. He’s a good manager but also doesn’t face a ton of pressure with a solid OLine. Doesn’t beat himself.
Beavs can’t overcome turnovers.
28-27 pups
Happy to be wrong again, but with the over hyped Beavs, and the dormant dawgs, I can’t personally bet against the “under dog”. Huskies by 7. 42-35. Again think/hope I’m wrong but they got a determined defense and they’re gonna force the run when they’re on offense.
What’s wrong with you?
Scared of the dreaded letdown….but Beav’s 38-28.
This is about where I was thinking…but I don’t want to look like a copycat…
Beavs win, 38-27
Something like 34 to 24/27, Beavers win. Its difficult for me to see UW holding OSU to less than 4 TDs. UW slows a few drives and OSU has to settle for a few field goals.
A UW sportswriter picked the Huskies 28-24, despite first describing the empirical disparity between the two program’s performance through the first 4 games. The only reason to see a UW advantage is if OSU is enjoying the USC win too much while UW has a bye week after this, and nothing to focus on but OSU.
Beavs 42-9
I hope I am wrong, but I think that everyone is getting a little too unrealistic about how good the beavers are. Let’s remember that Stanford just dismantled USC much the same way two weeks earlier and I don’t think anyone thinks Stanford is all that. Similarly, yes Washington has been inconsistent on offense, but the 50 point win against Arkansas State shows what they can do if they do get their offense rolling and they are getting healthier. Even the first half against Cal they looked pretty good. I think this game is closer to a 50/50 game then it is a blowout. I think the thing OSU has going for it, is that they are by far the more mentally tough team. 24-17 Beavers.
^^This^^
Smith said he basically copied Stanford’s gameplan. Hopefully he’s able to copy Michigan’s gameplan this week.
That plays to our strength. Run it down their throats all day and make passes to keep down and distance managable. Id love to see tons of running and hitting receivers in space. Lindsay, Lowe, Harrison, Irish, Gould, Bradford and Beason can all punish a defense for giving them a cushion.
If they start to spy with linebackers I’d love to see some deep posts and outs into the flats by the TE. It’s time for Musgrave to have a big one and with his height and them having to sell out in Nolan and the running game there should be plenty of space between levels.
…the 50 point win against Arkansas State shows what they can do if they do get their offense rolling
Not so fast my friend…….that 50pts was vs the defense ranked 127 out of 130. My man Tibs has the Beavs at #51.
That was their best rushing game by a fair margin at 200 yards. Cal they had 138 and Montana like 120. Michigan was like 50.
Our worst defensive game for rushing is Idaho at 108 (mostly their mobile qb). Only game this season over 100.
Expect Morris to throw for 60% of their snaps.
Game thread set to go up around 5pm Pacific. This is my final write up for the thread:
What I saw in interviews is that the Beavs were sniffing their own farts all week and enjoying the scent. Smith seemed aware of this. So what plays out?
Originally I thought 31-17 in a game they control but don’t dominate. Now I’m thinking psychology and ego come into play. Smith can try to coach that out of players, but it’s human nature, and therefore can’t be eliminated completely.
Also, I think the Beavs will have to pass more in this game, so I’m going with Nolan, Lindsey, and Harrison as the players to watch tonight. Morris has never impressed me as a QB, and given the Beavs D is getting more pressure, I think they force him into a few key mistakes.
Beavs are the better team, but fart sniffing keeps it close.
31-24
After a rough start and sitting in last for weeks, I see angry is now 1st in the CBS pool. Leading by example! Never give up, kids.
Looks like youre actually in 3rd when viewing the overall standings, but still an impressive comeback.
I’m bringing up the rear. I might be better off just picking all home teams(and always Beavs of course)
Really? For me it’s showing a 6 way tie for 1st.
Really. Five way tie for third in the full season stats………..says the guy ranked 27th!
We’re tied for second, bud
Nope, third. Two guys are tied for first.
I’m first in moral victories. So suck it
Aaron Fentress does a very nice analysts of the OSU-USC game and breaks down certain key plays. Unfortunately, the analysis is embedded within OreginLive. Also, OSU ranks first in rushing in the conference at 226 ypg while washington is 10th in the conference in rushing defense. That stat alone will be the key stat in tonight’s game as it will determine which team owns the LOS. if that stat holds up, ODU could win by two tds or more.
Gotta be careful with their rush D. Most of
That is Michigan with 330ish. If we can outclass them in the trenches I don’t see any reason we can’t put up a USC type performance on the ground.
I’m really hoping Lowe gets loose for a long one just for the swagger it would cause.
Another potential factor, particularly if OSU is be distracted by last week’s win and UW is generally viewed as under-performing, is, who sets the tone?
In 2012 OSU went into UW @ 7-0, UW was down in the dumps, Canzano said they didn’t belong on the field with OSU, UW came out, set the tone, I think this is the game where UW took out Wheaton(?), and ended Riley’s chance to set a program record 8 game win streak. Angry had an aneurysm, shut down briefly, and Riley regressed to the mean. In that game – on the road – I think OSU was only favored by 5.
I expect UW to come in hitting hard and trying to intimidate the Beavers, but I don’t expect the Beavers to back down this time.
I don’t see this team backing down to much.
New crystal ball for the beavs on 247
Who?
Sam Mason

Who is it?
Watching Michigan, their OL isn’t looking great against Wisconsin. Washington struggled against them, though. I hope that bodes well for ours.
Badgers D is legit. QB not so much.
Beautiful in NE Oregon. If it’s this nice in Corvallis, would be a great day for tailgating.
You huntin’
No. My brother and I got an elk. Got salmon and huckleberries in the freezer already….bought a pig from a local, will share it w/family and be set for winter.
Time for fall trout fishing!
Bends unreal today
Speaking of Bend…..your Boilers lost to my Gophers. Fleck has Brohm’s #. I thought we were going to get smoked after the shit show from last week.
Why wasn’t Plummer playing?
Coach went with the other QB.
That’s stupid. Plummer is having a really good season
I forgot deer season opens today, that won’t help attendance either.
If I was a deer I would go to the game. #safespace
Oregon’s passing game looks like garbage. The run game isn’t much better. Stanford up 10-0 early
I read Stanford’s QB nay be coming around too. They could be a tough out.
Good omen?
I just brought home a new Stihl chainsaw…orange/white/black color scheme of course….
Stanford WR just got his ankle twisted off :(
God that looked horrible. I couldn’t even register what I was looking at for a few seconds. I’m a little shook up. Poor guy.
I appreciate that they don’t do endless injury porn replays anymore.
Yea woulda been real gnarly with this one.
Was it a dirty play like their pulling on Gebbia’s leg?
Twitter reaction is all saying dirty low hit and snapped his ankle. I didnt see it
It was typical Oregon. DB flew in and and lowered his shoulder and dove into the back of his legs while turning his back to him instead of making any attempt ya know, make a tackle.

USC whipping Colorado and Stanford beating sucks.
I used to want UO to win out for a big CW. I’ve decided I’d like them to lose to Stanford, UW, and any common foes they have with Beavers, then get curb stomped by the Beavers…
For those in Corvallis, how’s the tailgating scene? Anecdotally, is there Lots of orange around?
I just arrived in town from Portland amd the drive was extremely fast with little traffic. Very few Beaver cars either.
That’s not a good indicator compared to my commutes in prior years.
Havent arrived at tailgate area yet though
USC dominated Colorado in rushing O as well as rushing D. That seems like a very good sign.
Cristo calls for his QB to take a shotgun snap at the 2 for a keeper, Fails. Dumb.
Tree takes a 10 pt lead to halftime, quak D is starting to tire.
Both teams trending toward the norm now. Oregon taking control of the game in the second half.
Gotta love that Stanford band, had “Go Beavs” on their big drum as they played the anthem before kick off.
Well, they ARE known for high standards and scholarship…
I’m not buying the whole let down game thing. I think Smith’s teams have proven to be mentally tough. If they struggle or lose I think it will be that Washington has put things together. I’m not seeing it tho. They should be able to run the ball unless Washington completely sells out against it. Then it’s up to Nolan to soften them up and be effective against a very good secondary. I think if they do those things and win the turnover battle again they’ll win this one.
Stanford has to be thee most successful 2 minute drill teams ever. It happens multiple time a year for them.
Oregon is so poorly coached it’s pathetic. They had the game won and pissed it away on poor clock management and some stupid penalties. They may still win in OT but I’m sorry, ducks don’t strike fear in anyone.
Hordes of 4 and 5* star talent being pissed away by Cristofraud and Co. and duck fan is too blind to see this.
*Not that I give a shit
In no universe should the quacks be ranked in the top 10 Monday. Only thing that has saved them is east coast media only seeing final scores and not the entire cluster f*# that is quack FB
Pac-12 refs…
Good Ole Cristo
Haha, Mario’s a fraud. How embarrassing.
Cristofraud
I’d love to see a star differential of the roster every game. Brutal loss that was totally self imposed
Welp, Pac is wide open. Only way we get a team in the playoff is if sparky, bruins or beavers run the table. That sounds like a bad joke haha
A couple quotes from Wilner’s Twitter:
“Oregon fans can complain about the officiating all they want on the final drive, but if you no-show for a half, you’re kinda asking for trouble”
AND, around the end of the first half:
“It might last another 30 minutes or another six hours … or another six weeks. But right now, Oregon State is the best team in the North”
Let’s just have Steven Jackson walking around the locker room making everyone humble.
So why was this Duck team supposed to be so special? Just because Anthony Brown was the starter instead of Tyler Shough? Apparently, the coaching staff didn’t think Brown was good enough to start last year. They were a 4-3 team last year that backed into the championship game. A lot of hype from beating a suspect Ohio St. team. Now it can be laid to rest, thank God!
Stars?
As usual the ducks. blow it.
I continue to lose more and more respect every time Hole runs a design QB run with Brown. The guy has gone through two knee surgeries.
Grown ups need to look out for their kids and their futures.
He’s an adult making the choice to play that role
That sort of rationale results in fans sending death threats to players.
These are kids playing with their futures ahead of them. Coaches in their 50’s should know better.
Multiple times watching the DUcks, they just look slow and inefficient on offense. No discipline, cheap shots all over the field, prancing and celebrating around but very little substance.
Every team in the conference should now be convinced this is no longer CHip Kelly’s duck teams. Too bad everyone on the east coast doesn’t know that yet.
Cristobal may be losing his team, he certainly loses his mind and blows up on guys on the sideline. I think all of those 5* giuys are there for Nike connections not for Mario. They won’t be loyal once the losing begins in earnest. Ducks are nearing the USC meltdown phase…it has been a house of cards for 2 years.
Pretty big test coming for Cristo, a bye week after a bubble bursting loss.
Sweet. Ducks lose a “heartbreaker” in OT…should fall out if top 10.
C’mon Beavers! 6 pm time slot, seize the day!
Carpe Castor!
Just got in from a 65 mile ride (with 3 flats…ugh). Glad to see the Ducks choked. I wonder if people will finally agree Mario is a fraud. Ohio St isn’t even that good this year, so that win is meh in terms of national stage.
Game thread up. When was the last time we had a Duck lose and Beav win (outside the CW)? Go Beavs.
It will be interesting to see how Canzano and the Oregon media spin this one. They so want Oregon back in the playoffs and thought it was a done deal with the Ohio St. win. Any fool could see that the Buckeyes are not elite this season. I don’t think it’s going to happen with Cristobal in charge.
Oregon wouldn’t beat Ohio State in a rematch now, nor in a January matchup.
I would pay good money to watch that beat down.
“We want Bama” lmaooo
Excuses are already starting in Eugene. O coordinator did not travel with the team…..
