    Numero uno???

Daughter and I shopped for 13 families adding toys to boxes of food the church put together. Overall, she was pretty good about not asking for toys for herself as we shopped.

Love the topic Angry. Merry Christmas.

Church food boxes here too. Checked in 249, replacing glass items and other stuff that wasn’t on the list, no toys though.
Great move to involve your daughter!
Merry Christmas to all, even the occasional quack lurker here!

Merry. Christmas to all of you degenerates. I was going to buy everyone a gift certificate to their local glory hole. but I figured a gift like that would suck.

I don’t care what they say, the level of intelligence and sophistication shown on Angrybeavs is beyond compare. (And Merry Christmas, by the way)

  4. Let’s hear Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners. Always interesting to hear what direction people go. We’re doing casserole tonight and roasted chicken tomorrow.

    • My wife makes scratch lasagma every year for xmas eve and we usually host our families. This year her foot/ankle are injured, so we’re doing Costco frozen lasagna.
      Tomorrow, ham at grandmas house

    • Spaghetti and meatballs is our traditional xmas eve dinner. My Italian wife cooks everything from scratch, and it’s fantastic!

Tomorrow we will be having dinner at her parents’ house. Prime rib and creamy potatoes are on the menu, along with pecan pie. Breakfast will be homemade cinnamon rolls, sausage and red pepper quiche, and fresh squeezed OJ.

    • Well, honey baked ham, honey baked turkey and Costco lasagna with a salad, apple pie, marionberry cobbler, French vanilla ice cream, choc chip and gingerbread cookies. Also home made mashed potatoes with bacon crumbles and garlic cheese in the mashed taters….

    • Christmas eve standing rib roast. Christmas double smoked hams. Porters and stouts and eggnog (real stuff) and various blended bourbon.

    • Christmas Eve: Polenta, tri-tip stew in a spicy tomato sauce, fried cheese, radicchio salad, ciabatta
Christmas Day: Chicken Marsala, fresh fettuccini, garlic green beens, focaccia.

    • Rib Roast, yorkshire puddings w/ gravy, brussels, then usual kinds of sides (carrots, green beans, potatoes etc).

Apple pie w/ vanilla ice cream.

  5. Big Turkey with bacon Brussels sprouts and maple cinnamon sweet potatoes tonight. We do Christmas Eve big so we can relax on Christmas Day.

  6. We did no traditional for us, she’ll pasta with a vodka sauce, and a Brie cheese bread. Tomorrow we go to my parents and have beef tenderloin, potatoes, broccoli, asparagus.

  7. Merry Xmas Angrybeavs!
I got a lump of of coal in my Xmas stocking from Wayne Tinkle.
Visiting my best friend since 7th grade in Boston. Grilled steaks and taters last night with all kinds of booze.
Today his Italian wife is making homemade lasagna and meatballs, sausage, lamb shank, and Brigole. Hopefully Santa brings me a cardiologist!
She likes Champagne, so lots of that until we hit the Bourbon and Scotch. Eggnog and rum in the coffee to start the day.

  8. Wife is putting together prime rib, green bean casserole, mash potatoes and gravy, tossed green salad and home made rolls. Also cheese cake and apple pie, home made. Pretty traditional but I have to admit those Italian dinners sound great. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you. Enjoy your families.

  9. Merry Christmas ya filthy animals!!
Lamb shank, poppyseed taters, green beans and bacon last night.
Prime rib with all the fixings tonight. Plenty of Pendelton for me, wine for the wife and in-laws, and maybe a couple sodas for the kids.
Been a great year for a Beav, plenty of under achieving and a couple surprises along the way. Stay safe, let’s do it again next year!!!

  10. Happy Holidays all. What a year! Who would have projected an Elite 8 and a bowl game. Those were just fever dreams for the last few years.

Long travel day yesterday. PDX-MIA-LIR. (Liberia Costa Rica) Four hour shuttle to “wellness/surfing” community, Nosara, on the Pacific side. Just in time for sunset, dinner, drinks.

For Christmas dinner will be hitting beach side pop-up. Mainly great fish etc. and expertly blended drinks. Tastes great after a few hours in the water battling a surf board. The waves are gentle enough for old, really bad surfers. Wife will disappear for group yoga sessions.

We have an open ended ticket so might be here for a month or more. It’s a nice consistent 85 degrees with a cooling breeze. Almost perfect.

    So….. Happy New Year all.

    • PBH, From one surfer to another, I hope you have a fantastic trip and that the waves are incredible. I have never been to that part of Costa Rica, please post a full report of the awesome waves you are catching!

    • Sounds like you finally made the right call.

I dream of Costa Rica and surfing…I understand its got some areas that are good for inexperienced surfers. I’ve been to Belize and did lots of snorkeling and relaxing…

Do the month+ and enjoy! You’ll be tan, rested and ready for another year of Beaver sports!

  11. Merry Christmas to my fellow cranky Beaver Believers. AB is our 365 day a year Festivus!

The Sweaty clan had Chinese food from a bar called Ma’s Dairy Farm on Christmas eve. (Surprisingly, the best Chinese in the mid valley, get the General Tsos chicken)

Tonight; ribeye roast, potato salad, fresh roasted green beans and a strawberry-port cheesecake for dessert.

Got: for maybe the first time ever… nothing Beaver related.
Gave: my son a game worn Beavers jersey, daughter a ton of clothes, the wife, some comfort food and snacks from her home state of Kentucky.

  12. 11

    Merry Christmas to all.
I sort of cheated and got my goodies early (new bag and an upgraded shaft for my driver).
We are having turkey loin for a main, potatoes and gravy, and salad for dinner tonight — since our anniversary is tomorrow (60th) the dinner will be rack of New Zealand lamb, one of our favorites. Some decent wine both nights.

I bought my 14-year old a Beaver Fiesta Bowl jersey, he was very pleased. My 18-year-old is a soccer player, he got a 2010 MLS cup soccer ball, apparently, they were constructed funky and tend to knuckle, so goalies whined and they were discontinued.

Dinner is ham, mashed potatoes, sauteed Brussels sprouts with bacon, and coconut cream pie. We also made a dozen loaves of sour cream banana bread and I’ve been eating it all day, so not that hungry.

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  14. That was fun reading the different meals and traditions. Especially like the lasagna/Italian meals. We used to eat them growing up so it brings up nostalgia. My lady likes to go with birds, though. Maybe next year I’ll talk her into Italian. Also, thanks to the person who made a donation yesterday.

Anybody here have any info on Galveston, Texas? The whole family is heading their late January, after ruling out the original trip to Mexico due to Covid concerns. There’s gonna be 6 adults and 5 little kids. Any help from some fellow ABs would be greatly appreciated!!

      • Where in Mexico were you originally planning?

Our family has been delaying a similar large family trip. Really wanted to make it happen this year.
I was voting for San Jose Del Cabo but got out voted. Now nobody can decide on where to go

        • Loreto. I guess it’s the new Puerto Vallarta. Only on the Baja side. Totally safe for tourists, an old fishing town that they decided to turn into a tourist place. Beautiful weather, nice beaches, just couldn’t risk getting stuck there if one of the 11 of us got stuck there with Covid. Quarantine in Mexico isn’t as fun as it sounds.

          • Wife and I spent a week in Loreto in October-first time there. No resort hotels, which is why we went there. There’s two Loretos: The “town” and the “bay”. Loreto Bay is just south and is the expat section. Very nice villas/condos all in a small village that’s relatively self-contained and walkable. That’s where the beaches as such are…on the Baja side there are no waves.

We stayed in town at a property with four casitas. Everything is walkable in town and there are no resorts/nightlife. Locals cruise in the cars along the malecon. My description of the town is rustic. Dogs and chickens in the streets, but Loreto is clean and safe. No real beaches in town. Snorkeling is incredible. Sport fishing, scuba/snorkeling and whale watching are the primary tourist drivers…

75 minute nonstop from LAX makes it quite accessible. Loreto is definitely not for something looking for resorts and a party scene.

        • I have family that waited on the tarmac for hours today trying to get to Mexico from Seattle. Shortage of staffing and weather caused the delay. Never heard if they ever actually left the tarmac. Trip was delayed a day so they slept in the airport on Christmas night. Wonderful start to a honeymoon. Safe travels.

      • No clue, you just have a downvotable face?

Galveston for me is all about the water. I’m a big fan of the fishing trips or just boat tours. Plenty of good beaches to hang out on. Best part is locals think it’s cold right now so prices are usually low!

Moody gardens is basically a family fun complex. If you get bored you are an hour from Houston and there’s shitloads to do there.

        • Thanks man! Contacted a fishing charter and they said it’s great fishing for black drum about the time we are there. Had to google that, never heard of a black drum. As long as it’s good eating, I’m in. Moody gardens looks like a good time. My folks want to see Bishop Palace too. I think we’ll make it work!

          • Bishop palace and the Spanish district are super cool but gonna be boring for an average kid.

Every time I have been there we had tons of plans but usually just end up laying/walking around on the beach and eating killer food!

    • It has been a while since I was in Galveston, not impressed. Only positive I can think of is the seafood.

Currently sitting in Playa del Carmen and it is fabulous. We waited until the last day to get a condo because we were concerned thta some sort of lockdowns may come. We are heading back on NYE, hope we still have a flight (although I can certainly think of worse places to be stuck.

  16. Just watched a local news special on local athletes in Oregon in 2021. One player featured was Paul Wilson, son of former Giants pitching great Trevor Wilson…paul is a junior at Lakeridge HS, is a 6’4″ left handed pitcher who throws in the mid 90s and is rated ad the #1 player in Oregon…OSU offered him a full ride scholly when he was a freshman so that tells you how special this kid is. Apparently, he packs some real power in.his bat and also plays first base. He has already committed to play fir the beavers so it sounds like the beavers are getting one heck of a pitcher and hitter as well. He graduates in ’23 but maybe he graduates early and we get to see him in the ’23 season…if you google his name, there’s a good write up on him that goes into detail about his pitching and hitting skills so it’s really exciting to see a kid of his caliber saying in state…Go Beavers!

ESPN was showing an alert that Lanning is still coaching the defense for Georgia in the playoffs. Was that well known already? Seems a little weird, but I guess Georgia wants a championship pretty badly and Nikegon was willing to compromise.

    • 3
      1

It was known when he was hired that he would stay through the playoff run. Michigan must be thrilled to know Georgia’s DC is pulling double-duty and had his attention split.

      • Apparently it’s normal but I think it’s idiotic. Oregon is losing weeks of recruiting and Georgia is leaving their players open to transfer and recruiting by their own staff.

        I don’t get it

        • I thought it was weird that ESPN was making a big enough deal out of it to put it on its ticker. The Oregonian has put up an odd article about Lanning being able to “burn the midnight oil” because of the time zone changes. Working on Georgia in the morning and the Quackies at night!

          • Agree, conflict of interest.
OTOH, things aren’t always done that way, Adrian Klemm heads to Oregon from the Steelers, immediately turning over O-line job to an assistant (according to The Scoop).

Once again, quacks place emphasis on recruiting record when hiring.

And, once again, quacks don’t place a lot of emphasis on having a spotless record either. Klemn, in 2014 “admitted to paying $2,400 for housing and private training sessions for two recruits.” and caught a two year show-cause in 2016, for the violation.

      • 2
        1

It’s a strange situation and I get the conflict of interest but- I respect the decision. I think it’s pretty crappy that the norm is for coaches to get hired before they finish their season with the team, and then to abandon that team. Especially if the team has a lot still to play for.

It’s a little less extreme with a coordinator but man can you imagine if the Beavs somehow strung together a magical season where everything went our way, went undefeated, made the playoff, and then lost our HC before we could get there? A once in a lifetime opportunity undone by stupid and screwed up hiring practices?

Would love to see the NCAA ban coaching interviews until a team has finished their season (like the NFL does) and think that would be really good for the sport. They won’t though, so I’ll just respect anyone that does right by their old team at the expense of their new situation.

Wondering if there will be another covid year.
College bowls shutting down, Beav women 1 game canceled, one game postponed; men 2 games postponed so far. The worst part is that we could see another year of Silva!

    • 4
      3

Silva was great last season over the last few weeks of the season. I’m not sure what happened this year but he has been a major disappointment but so has the entire team.

    • Crossing my fingers my Gophers get to play in their lame bowl game tonight! So far so good, but I agree on the repeat COVID year.

        • 8-4, but should have been 10-2. Shades of the Beav’s, some stupid coaching decisions cost us at least two games…
Playing West Virginia in the Diamondbacks baseball stadium.

          • Yes and then a nightmare injury epidemic at that position. Last four games played with the 5th and 6th string RB’s and a converted LB! Another what if had he stayed healthy this year. He was a stud and a workhorse like YB.

          • Perhaps the most frustrating, irritating game I have ever watched in person. OC trying to kill the clock when they were BEHIND! RUTM over and over (-

          • Fleck was helped by a kid from MN playing QB at IMG that turned down a P5 scholarship to walk on at MN. We also got a huge 4 star guard from IMG that was rated higher than Faalele. He got called out by teammates this season at a players only meeting, lost his spot and is transferring to Texas. The QB is in the portal as well. Flecks Mini Me QB announced he is coming back. Ugh! Lost both backups at QB because of that. It was time to move on….with a new QB.

          • How does Fleck’s rah-rah crap play with the fanbase? I’m assuming well because they have won. I sort of liked it at first, but I find him kind of annoying now. Looks like he’s gotten them back to a Glen Mason level, but wasn’t Mason let go because he couldn’t progress any further?

          • Fleck has toned it down a lot and has way surpassed Mason. I think he has built a program that can have sustained success. For all the rah rah crap, he is a hyper conservative coach; a modern Jim Tressel. I will give him credit; all of the draft eligible guys played in the bowl game. Mason got fired for a multitude of things, but the straw was blowing a 31 point lead late in the 3rd quarter in a bowl game against Leach when he was at T Tech! The last in a long line of unbelievable losses.

    • Congrats to BJ; Seems like a smart move.

That leaves Oregon State with only five RBs, counting Damir Collins, so that certainly seems like a place to add a transfer or preferred walk-on.

    • 10

Baylor was great for the Beavers; patient (5 years!), played a very effective, contributing role before becoming the PAC 12 rushing leader…seemed like a team guy and very good representative of the program. Super competitive, seemed to hate being tackled, and so entertaining to watch on top of all the positive character attributes.

I hope the staff continues to land players of his character and ability and wish him the best in the NFL.

  19. Hopefully Collins is convinced to stay. Plenty of snaps up for grabs next year.

If Martinez’s numbers (speed + weight) are as reported, he could step in and play immediately.

    • 2
      4

Ignore the thumbs down, whoever did that is a piece of shit. Madden deserves to be on the Mount Rushmore of NFL football.
Speaking of that maybe in the slow times, Angry can come up with a debate for the Mount Rushmore of Beaver football. I’ll go Dee Andros, Stephen Jackson, Terry Baker, Ken Simonton, and Mike Riley (just to piss you off Angry)

      • 5
        1

Putting Dee Andros on Mount Beavmore is like putting Richard Nixon on Mount Rushmore. He did more lasting damage to the OSU AD than any individual.

        • The great Pumpkin coached the best teams OSU ever had, he goes on Mount Beavmore. He did way more good then bad, and is next to Terry Baker in legend status for OSU football

          • 4
            1

Tommy Prothro, Dennis Erickson and Mike Riley beg to differ.

Andros had a few good years, cashed in, then oversaw seven years of slow decline, ending in a 1-win season that earned him…a promotion to AD. His racism set the program back years in recruiting. Then he hired Craig Fertig over two future Hall of Fame coaches, setting the program back another decade or so. Then he hired Joe Avezzano (from an admittedly lackluster batch of candidates). He ended up presiding over the majority of our epic losing season streak.

          • You win, just don’t tell my old man. He was on the Giant Killers team, and speaks about him like he was a God. He also knew Coach Bud Riley’s son, Mike, and always thought his dad was the better coach.

          • LOL. No bowl games with a couple of big wins and he’s a legend? Let’s not continue the proud OSU tradition of celebrating mediocrity.

          • Read above. To some, he was a God. To others, the reason for the downfall. Regardless, he is an important figure in OSU football history.

  20. Hawaii has had a bunch of their starters enter the portal after complaining the HC Todd Graham has created an environment at UH that has ruined their love of the game.

So Hawaii and Todd Graham had to release statements acknowledging they suck, but will work hard to suck less.

They might be desperate enough for new players next year that maybe I should get my HUDL film up to date. I could go for a year in Oahu

    https://twitter.com/HawaiiFootball/status/1476015386634043393?t=o-Gbo_xOaTlrtWildT9lFA&s=19

  21. Anyone here expecting any changes to the coaching staff? Who do you want to see as LB coach?

I hope Bray isn’t afraid to make a change, particularly at DL. Not sure if Salave’a is following Mario to Miami, but I’d take him in a heart beat.

    • 1
      1

Salavea makes more sense with a west coast job, given the area he recruits. Not sure if USC has a DL coach yet? Vic So’oto may be retained, but not sure what their plan is. If they let him go, I’d love to get So’oto too. But neither seems like a realistic possibility.
I’m a little surprised at the lack of moves Smith has made to improve the staff while all of the coaching carousel stuff has been going on.
We’ll probably end up promoting from within and giving the LB job to Van Akeren.

      https://osubeavers.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/kendrick-van-ackeren/1499

      • Almost forgot about So’oto. I get that Niner has low turnover due to the fact he is so loyal. He made the right move in getting rid of Tibesar, and I hope he is willing to work with Bray to upgrade the defense. Coach Legi just hadn’t impressed me a whole lot.

I remember Van Akeren from his playing days. He is young and likely learned a lot from Bray and Tibs (who I still think is an above average LB coach). Still, I think we can do better in terms of a proven recruiter and developer.

Fun fact: OSU passed over Idaho HC Dennis Erickson when they hired Dave Kragthorpe.

Alternate timeline Beaver football is fascinating…

I dont think it’s a question of “if” Dorman commits to OSU. That part seems pretty certain. But can we hold onto him for a full year till signing day?
The good news is, he seems pretty solid with OSU and Lindgren right now, but alot can change.

OT Covid: Haven’t said much about it for awhile but it looks like there is finally some good news so I figured I would share in case people are checked out . Omicron looks to be the variant we have been hoping for.

It has an initial R0 of 15 which is 3 times higher than delta. For reference measles is the most contagious natural virus ans it’s R0 is 18. That said omicron seems to be happy to stay in the upper respiratory tract which makes it easier to treat and far less deadly.

To put the R0 on perspective omicron was identified in South Africa 37 days ago and as of last night 73% of the reported covid infections on EARTH are omicron. Deaths are flattening or plummeting in most of the world and hospitalizations are also crashing for the most part. It also appears that vaccines with booster are pretty effective at limiting severe outcomes.

If you have a chance compare daily infections to deaths over the last 40 days or so in South Africa. Incredibly infectious but not nearly as destructive.

One of the Hawaii transfers, DE Jonah Laulu, has already posted offers from USC, GA, UW, Cal.
I know OSU had a coach follow him shortly after he entered the portal. But no offer reported by OSU yet. In fact, aside from 1 or 2 coaches, our staff has been very inactive as a whole since signing day(you might say they were inactive at the bowl game even).

Not sure what OSU’s plan is, but they appear to be stuck in a hangover state the past couple of weeks while other teams around us are actively trying to get better through coaching hirings and transfer recruiting. I thought we were the “we aint done yet” team?

        • Do you know anything about their ILB Darius Muasau? Apparently he was their best defensive player and a co-captain. He is also transferring. Wasnt highly rated out of HS, but has had a productive season with 108 tackles

          • According to PFF, Muasau is a really good pass rusher, but below in coverage. Sounds familiar at the LB spot. At only 6’1, he doesn’t have the length we used to (still do?) prefer for an edge guy, but I’d think Bray wants better coverage performance from the LB unit next year.

Laulu is above average, but only their 5th highest rated defensive starter. Definitely good depth for someone, but may not start at LSU, etc.

    • 2
      3

Seems like a good opportunity for Coach Legi to show his worth. He went from Hawaii to OSU himself.

Disappointing to hear how lackadaisical the staff has been since the bowl game. I get the need for downtime, but there needs to be a sense of urgency when it comes to upgrading your talent and staff.

    • Maybe they don’t think it’s an upgrade over existing talent? I don’t like the inactivity, but I think a team also has to be careful about balancing what appears to be increasingly frequent turnover w/secured players with understood ability(ies). At a certain point, if the turnover rate is too high, the lack of continuity might offset any potential talent increase.

In this case however, the offers seem to indicate pretty good talent. Other PAC programs clearly view him as at least good for depth on their rosters. Given their needs, OSU could certainly benefit from building a better recruiting relationship with Hawaii.

    • Reminds me of Cody Vaz against Stanford a few years back. Dude running for and got the first down but promptly fumbled off of his own thigh with no one around him, dude just trying to do too much.

      • So many Stanford games lost due to an ill timed fumble.
        Vaz.
Nall with the fumble off his own player.
Nolan trying to do too much in 2020 and fumbling on a scramble near the goal line.

  25. 1
    1

Wow not sure I’ve seen that before. Iowa State QB Brock Purdy (former Beav recruiting target back in the day) scrambles on 4th and 2 on a potential game tying/winning drive and easily picks up the first down by 3+ yards but then fumbles and the ball squirts back behind the LOS where Purdy pounces on it and is downed. Turnover on downs. That makes sense, but at first I wondered whether him passing the LOS before fumbling would mean automatic first down and the spot of the fumble recovery wouldn’t change that. Shows how much I know about sportsball.

  26. Ball Security….part II:
The QB many quack fans love to hate with a TO on first possession in the Alamo Bowl. Tipped int, not entirely the fault of Brown, but he’ll still be blamed in some quarters.

    • 2
      1

Does anyone else get the sense Oregon football is in for a rough stretch of time? Similar to uw went thru before the locker era, and what the Beavs just went thru? It just feels like it’s time for them to become the Colorado for a decade or so to me

      • 6
        3

Nice thought, but too much money, marketing, and recruiting power down there, especially with NIL. Rough stretch probably means 9+ win seasons and the bandwagon bemoaning why can’t they have nice things.

      • Yeah, I used to think once Phil was gone they’d take a step back but I think the worse case scenario for them is Phil living another decade as the senile owner. Gonna drive coaches and donors mad.

      • I don’t know, they’ve had an occasional crappy season and changed head coaches several times, but always seem to bounce back. Phil’s money and the ABC/ESPN exposure seem to have guaranteed a high level of recruiting. Better players do sometimes make the difference. I thought I read where this year’s recruiting class fell into the ’40s, so it will be interesting to see if this leads to a dropoff in a season or two.

  27. PAC-12 not doing anything to change the perception that west coast football is marshmallow soft, peewee league football.

This game going about how I expected it would.

    • Yes, he agreed to do it for one game. I thought I read where they are trying to pay him six figures and he turned it down? His son is also a receiver on the team.

  28. Thought that a’hole Verone McKinley III was gonna sit out the Alamo. Thought wrong. So far the camera hasn’t caught any of his usual dirty play, at least not that I’ve seen.

BTW…….WBB games vs Colo and Utah scheduled for this weekend have been postponed. That makes three in a row which couldn’t be played as scheduled due to Covid problems with the opposition.

  29. UO giving up 10+ YPC to two UO backs…funny game, college football. Beavers run game held in check by UO in the CW…OSU dropped 42 on Utah in a win, UO dropped 17 on Utah. In two losses…

  30. The Alamo Bowl has not been kind to the Pac-12 since they got it back in the Pac-12 slate. 3-9 in the last 12? You can argue “motivation” – its usually the team that blew a shot at the Rose Bowl, but they’re usually facing a team that blew a shot at the playoff or a NY6 game of their own.

  31. These bowl games crack me up. Team personnel and players completely different by the time the game starts. Both teams with coaches gone, and many players opting out. This sport becoming harder and harder to watch as it has become a story of loyalty to only one thing….$$$$. The NIL deals are the icing on the cake. So frustrating to watch. Like some have commented here already, Beavs will finally get to the Rose bowl, JS will leave for another gig, and half the players will opt-out….god, what a twisted and evil joke that would be!!!

  32. Didn’t realize our athletic department was the second worst in all of Power 5 conferences. Really makes it difficult to compete consistently. This was the excerpt from SI:

The financial gap between the two groups is unmistakable. Only one G5 team has a budget that is bigger than any Power 5 program: UConn at $78.7 million. That ranks above the bottom two P5 budgets: Washington State and Oregon State. More than half of the Power 5 schools have a budget of at least $100 million.

      • 1
        1

Agreed. Its kind of interesting that OSU has been or has gotten competitive in non-money sports (baseball, women’s basketball, women’s gymnastics generally seems pretty competitive), and in recent seasons men’s soccer, and lag for decades in the money sports of men’s basketball and football. Again, I think its interesting that WSU has had more football success than OSU even though budgets are similar and Pullman is so remote – that says something about AD/coaching hires.

Women’s basketball seems to be growing in popularity a bit, at least with live audiences if not so much tv. It will be interesting to see if OSU can build and maintain a soccer program. My understanding in soccer is, young adults can go pro if they choose, similar to baseball, and it seems unlikely college soccer develops major audiences when there’s so many pro leagues to watch.

Those sports that aren’t big money makers seem oddly less prone to corruption(?)…As long as you like sports that most people don’t care to watch based on tv viewership, OSU has some pretty competitive offerings. It kind of suggests if OSU played to its strengths and budget, men’s basketball and football would move down. Could they be competitive and fun if that happened? That won’t happen with the upcoming Reser investments, and OSU will continue to lag in terms of $$$ and regular competitiveness.

I know I don’t ever donate to the athletic department, only to academics. I last bought a pair of season tickets about 10-12 years ago as a gift for someone else.

And yet we still win national championships and compete for them in a variety of sports.

Barnes has gotten flak on here in the past, but the AD is punching above its weight.

If you look to see how many schools have had their Football/MBB/WBB/Baseball/MSoccer all make the post season in the last year, the list is pretty small.
It’s a pretty well rounded athletic department all things considered. Just wish FB were more of a national brand, but they never will be without significantly more funding.

Was looking at the OSU 247 site to see if any new crystal balls are showing up and saw a link for an article that looked familiar. It’s a list of top 10 commitments OSU has received by position in the last 20 years. I could have sworn I’d seen that before. Hit the google and found 2 other articles from the last 2 years with pretty much the exact same recycled content, save for a few minor tweaks each year. I wonder how many years this same article goes back?

  34. Question for anyone who follows recruiting: can you think of any “near miss” guys from the past several years that we were “finalists” for, but didn’t land?

Purdy comes up a lot here, but I feel like I lot of the other guys didn’t end up being very successful (Jamire Calvin is another one that comes to mind).

Please list any others you can think of.

    • 3
      1

My god. So basically one of the best DL recruiters in the West was available but we either werent interested or didnt have the ability to compete with the juggernaut of Colorado football.

      • I am an alum and a loyal supporter of the program since I was a toddler. This off-season is infuriating. I feel like we settled for Bray, but the lack of urgency to address other staff upgrades is really making me depressed. I just may tune out for the 2023 season.

        • The officials ruled forward progress was stopped but I didn’t notice any of Tennessee players pulling him towards the goal line. The announcers were initially stunned that it wasn’t ruled a TD and even after the final call was made, announcers were stunned the call on the field was confirmed.. I really think he scored as the whistle had yet to blow before the tip of the ball crossed the goal line. That said, I was glad ti see Purdue win and finish 9-4.

  35. Those lovable losers hit the hardwood tonight against Utah seeking their first conference win. Surprisingly, they have defeated the Utes four straight times. Sounds like Hunt is still MIA (maybe addition by subtraction) and Rand/Malone-Key are out with COVID. Looks like circumstances will hinder Big Tinks scattershot approach to substitutions.

  36. Beavs up 47-38 at the half and that’s with the Utes shooting 7-12 for three-land. Lucas has 14 pts, will be interesting to see if they can keep scoring like this.

  37. Man haven’t watched most OSU basketball this season with good reason. Watching now against Utah. I’m surprised how slow and out of shape Silva looks.

BTW. Be careful out there everyone. Been fighting Covid the last 2 weeks. Coming out of it now. This thing is no joke. I was vaccinated last Feb and it still kicked my ass. Keeps your heads low people.

      4

      Boosters definitely help.

We had a big family gathering with my in-laws where most people ended up getting it. Those who had gotten a booster in the last few months fared significantly better (basically just had a mild cold, if anything) than those who didn’t (been knocked out of action for a few days now).

Kids (under 10) have either not shown symptoms or had very mild illness for only one day.

    • Sorry to hear that Bill. We’ve been lucky and boosted. Can’t imagine being down for two weeks. Our goal is minimize the effects if/when it comes along. Deschutes County currently has the highest case rate in Oregon.

  39. Beavs were up nine with 1:16 left, but they always make it so hard. Lucas just missed the front end of a 1 and 1, and then Williams stupidly fouled a three-point shooter. Now up only six.

  40. Guys it’s really simple. You go 20-10 like a normal team and you get a mid seed unless you win the conference tourney. You go 20-10 on a 19 game winning streak and win the conference tourney then you get a high seed! #3DChessTinks

  41. The biggest difference in these last two games is Oregon State looks like they actually know what they want to do with the ball on offense.

      • His role is energy guy off the bench. If he isn’t okay with that then he should seek an opportunity elsewhere. Having Davis (a true pg that can drive and dish) two years is fantastic.

  42. 1
    2

Utah isn’t a great team – looking at their season so far, they’re kind of like where we expected the Beavs to be at. Win the games against the low to mid-majors, maybe a win or two against a P5 school. I imagine attendance was dismal.

    • They were arguably the best in the country, so I can’t imagine a previous Beaver line would have topped them. Maybe the one with Seumalo, Weinreich, Andrews, Mitchell, etc.?

      • That was the truly disappointing aspect of the bowl game. They were totally unfocused and sloppy. Poor coaching and really poor internal leadership.

      • Actually, the beavers O line was ranked second in the country behind only ohio state if I remember correctly…i just saw an article in the past two weeks that showed the top O lines in the country and their overall point scores in the ranking.

        • 2
          2

Maybe this has been covered but I felt like a big aid to the o line was the extra blockers from the TE position and sometimes a receiver (tongue) crashing down and helping with blocking as well. Maybe this is common but I’m not so sure it was the o line as much as coach m utilizing extra blockers to help out the protection and run game. Someone with more football knowledge enlighten me.

  43. I don’t know if Wazzu “coug’ed it” since I didn’t watch much of the game, but losing to Cent. Michigan has to be the poorest P-12 performance so far.

  44. 2
    5

Hoping Bearcats complete the egg laying. Tired of hearing how great they are all year with their crap schedule. Hell, we probably could’ve won 10 against that line-up (post Tibs of course.) They have a great win against ND. That’s about it.
If they get smacked here, maybe we don’t have to hear everyone sucking their nuts next year, or whatever other group of five team munches all the cupcakes.
And yes the PAC sucks and has been eating it in bowl season but remember the PAC/Go5 matchups aren’t best against best, second against second, etc. Example, PAC #6 played MWC #1 so I’m preempting that bullcrap. Go5 still Go5. A couple tough games and about ten cupcakes should not an NC team make.

  45. 4
    1

Now that we’ve seen how an undefeated group of five team actually fares against the elite, can we mythically revoke UCF’s mythical national championship?

    • Damn Scotty, you’ve got some “group of five” anger management issues to work out! At least Cincy and UCF can try to back it up in the Big 12 soon enough

      • 5
        1

Started back with Boise State and their one game seasons. Also makes it like “hey, might as well join the crappiest conference you can!”
Funny enough, pretty good chance Lincoln Riley went to USC in part due to that. Easier to go undefeated in the PAC at USC than to try winning the SEC. He’s no idiot.

  46. 5
    2

Definitely won’t be watching SEC championship part 2. They should end the playoffs and just make It a best of 3 SEC championship.

I was kinda nervous that Oregon would be a defensive juggernaut but I’m not all that concerned watching Georgia. Like Alabama the defense is not creative or really interesting. The players are just way better than anyone but Alabama. Unless Oregon can out recruit the top of the SEC I think they may even take a step back.

    • He was on the 1999-2000 rosters but didn’t play much, tough wideout roster to crack. I think he had like 1 catch. He transferred to Montana State.

      2

I saw where two more Quack starters are staying. I thought TJ Bass would move on, NFL is always looking for talented lineman. What’s going on? A little money slipping under?

        • 1
          1

The Quacks seem to be bucking the trend with more than the average share of players staying. Fanning must be selling that they can beat Georgia and make a run next year. Just waiting for the Canzano piece about how they are playoff contenders next season.

  47. 1
    3

Based on recent follows, I’ve got a feeling OSU will be facing Sam Vidlak next year in the first game of the season.
    Happy New Year!

  48. So much for needing to run the ball to win. ND has almost 300 yards passing and 0 yards rushing in the first quarter and a half. Leads 21-7.

  49. 1
    3

OSU football has been a disaster since about the Utah win. Thanks for the let down JS.

Apparently when he said “we ain’t done yet” he meant “we ain’t done frustrating you yet”

Happy New Year to all of you long suffering Beavs fans. Thank goodness for Pat Casey at least.

  50. It was mentioned a little higher up, but Lieutenant Dan continued his string of bizarre hires, bringing in the WR coach from one of the PAC-12’s worst performing WR groups, and the QB coach from one of the worst passing offenses in the country (New Mexico).

Supposedly they’re all top recruiters. I guess he’s intent on continuing the Nike trend of underachieving with top recruiting classes?

    • 3
      2

I’d rather know OSU’s plan. We took our best recruiter(Bray) and moved into a role where he’ll be busier now amd have less time for recruiting. And we’ve had since November to round out the vacancy that move made, but havent addressed it yet. I’m worried our plan is to just backfill with the next man up from within and convert grad assiatants to coaches, rather than hire a difference maker.
That plan would be great if we were actually outcoaching teams on a consistent basis at multiple positions, but we’re not there.

  51. I could be wrong, but I think the Okie state QB was the QB that beat the beavs in 2019 at resers and he might have come in as a backup in that game. I was at that game but I’m fuzzy on the details…. I also wonder do all the players in the PS FB get a PS system as part of their gift package?

    • 2
      1

That is Spencer Sanders. He started and played the whole game that night. He was 19 for 24 for 3 TD’s. He rushed for another 109 yards. And of course, it was his very first collegiate start. Beavs make every first time QB look like a Heisman candidate.

    • 13
      1

Beavs had every opportunity to be the Rose Bowl team this year but pissed it away with terrible showings a WSU/Cal/Colorado.

Not going to get as open of a path to the Rose Bowl very often and we wasted it

      • And kudos to Utah for doing what needed to brme done. Especially with the trajedy they went through.

They dont need excessive NIL deals to compete at a high level. Should give OSU some hope

      • Was thinking this when I posted the link….everything lining-up beautifully for Utah this year — could have been the Beavs if JS can’t get out of his own way. I don’t feel the hate against Utah like many here, would rather have Utah in there than UO, UW, or USC.

  52. 1
    1

Looks like Ohio State truly is missing those 8 scholarship players.

Someone up top said Utah was their second least favorite team in the conference. That got me to thinking how I would list my 12 from most favorite to least favorite. Here’s what I came up with.
    1) Oregon State
    2) Washington State
    3) Colorado
    4) Arizona
    5) Cal
    6) Stanford
    7) Utah
    8) ASU
    9) UCLA
    10) SC
    11) UO
    12) UW

    • 5
      2

Lets do it this way: Which PAC12 team could the Beavs learn the most from?
With that perspective I’d say you gotta move both Stanford and Utah up several spots.

      • WSU, Utah.

WSU, similar budget, worse location, better bowl history.

Utah – in PAC 12 years (?), already to a Rose Bowl. Seem to recruit good defenders, dual threat QBs, effective RBs. Generally well coached and sound.

  53. Oldbeav, thanks for asking. All good here. That fire was about an hour South.

Who’s excited for another all SEC title game? Disney has done a great job dismantling college football. I wrote about this 10 years ago here. Now everyone sees it. Ratings for that one will be interesting.

    • 6
      5

One of the commentators was babbling during the ND/OkSt game that SEC football was “just better”. Made me want to puke. No, Alabama is just better and then it’s usually one of three other SEC teams depending on the year (Auburn, Georgia, or Florida). The rest are just there for fodder.

      • 8
        1

Downvotes? You guys like the SEC? Or is it lurking Quacks who think their second SEC assistant is going to make them an SEC team? Didn’t work the first time.

    • concur, Angry. I don’t know if anyone here caught it, but Rece Davis and and Kirk Herbstreit on the pre game show this morning were fondly reminiscing about how much they liked the state of college football before the CFP. What should happen is a reversion to the idea Beano Cook always touted: what he called Plus 1. Play all the bowls and then decide plays for the title a week or two later. Among other things, you wouldn’t see players opting out. The logical extension of that idea is that players start opting out after their Sophomore year.

      • Utah just a trash second half and leaky secondary! PAC-12 defense is just awful….this is what to expect for a while with not enough bigs on the D-lines for this conference to get to the next level (consistent CFP exposure).

      • It’s only because of COVID cancellations, though.

Not arguing the conference is any good, but it’s not any worse than the ACC (and arguably the Big Ten) and this was a particularly bad year for the PAC.

  54. 3
    4

Utah with completely braindead defensive strategy at the end. Once they’re in FG range, just let them score already. Preserve SOME time to give yourself a chance to get it into OT. The guy who tackled the Buckeye player at like the 5 wins the Most Braindead Pyrrhic Victory award of the game.

Practice for years, play a big game, and piss it all away at the end with stupid strategy. Shit like that INFURIATES me. Was rooting for them, but glad they lost now if that’s how many brain cells they have.

    • Braindead? What about not going with an onsides kick after tieing the score with about 2 minutes to go? Seemed the thing to do given the lack of effectiveness of the Ute D in the second half.

      • No kidding, was thinking that too for the entire 4th quarter. Field position didn’t seem to matter for Buckeye offense since they were hitting all the explosive plays. Wish more coaches had the guts to do the smart but unconventional things that would give them a better chance of winning the game… even if it looks like conceding you’re in the weaker position.

    • Disagree.

Where they fucked up was scoring too quickly and leaving tOSU too much time. They only had one timeout. Once inside the 20 I’d have rather seen a few running plays. Even a read option. It worked to net them a first down already on that drive.

Score a TD and maybe even got for 2 to win it.

Terrible strategy as they had offered up very little resistance defensively in the 2nd half.

Honestly, IDGAF. PAC-12 football has been sissy, downy soft football for years. Until that changes? This is how it will be.

Expect the next Canzano cat shit gravel box liner hit piece to be about how Lanning was a fantastic hire for UO in an attempt to bring some SEC toughness to Eugene. He may be right. Time will tell.

      • Utah needed to do whatever they had to in order to score. How they did it was secondary, unlike tOSU which could basically score at will. Trying to do it a certain way was beyond Utah and their backup QB (I mean, they weren’t playing us.)

PAC football sucks, I don’t argue it anymore either. Other conferences just care more. Makes sense.

    • 1
      1

Half-time interview w Shittingham was telling. Dude had a shit eating grin on his face like he had it in the bag already. Doh!!!!!

  55. I guess one for the “opt-out” side…..Matt Corral was injured in the first quarter now on crutches. Baylor has a hard-hitting defense.

    • After the defender tackled/landed on the WB, one of the QBs own linemen dove on the defender, who was on top of the QB. So pointless and stupid. “I’ll just throw another 300 lbs on my own QB while he’s down.” WTF. Arguably, he could have received a flag for unnecessary roughness. If he were a defender, it probably would have been a Kate hit.

Did I see correctly that the Reser stadium video board is getting renovated this year?
Saw it on some OSU fan account on IG, Beaverswag.
Also, can somebody tell Beaverswag that name needs to be changed. It sounds Willie Taggert-esque

  57. I’d like to know people’s post season grades on our coaching staff. Maybe we should pick 1 coach per day for the next couple of weeks and give some feedback.
I’m most curious where fans stand on Lindgren?
How would you grade him on the following criteria?(using a 1-10 scale and any comments to support that grade)

    Recruiting:
    In game coaching:
    Player development:
    Year to year growth/regression:

    • Recruiting I’m not really sure. I don’t know what area he recruits or how successful he’s been.
In game coaching I would place him around an 8. The offense has been pretty good and at the top of the pac since he’s come on board. His main flaw is getting away from the run game at times. That said if he had a QB that could hit the deep ball his offense would run a lot more smoothly but he has to realize his players strengths and weaknesses.
Player development I would also place around an 8. Nolan made huge strides from where he was last year. Considering his average arm the fact that Nolan was so efficient is pretty impressive. Luton made a big jump after a year with him as well.
I don’t know if I’ve seen him make any real progression. He hasn’t really done anything real innovative or anything like that. I think he did a good job of using our TEs to our advantage in blocking. I would’ve liked to see them used more in the passing game but a lot of that was on Nolan going for the deep ball when the TEs were wide open underneath.

Ultimately I’m pretty happy with Lindgren and think he’s done a good job so far. I like having the continuity at OC. Yes at times the playcalling can be frustrating but that’s just part of football where if it works he looks like a genius and if not you’re calling for his head. I would really like to see him with a QB that can hit the deep ball regularly as I don’t think he’s had that since he’s been here. I believe that’s really handcuffed the offense. One more thing I forgot about is his 4the down playcalling. 9/10 times they were good calls (mostly Colletto runs) but every 1/10 times he would call a real head scratcher. That needs to improve but I do think they had a very high conversion rate.

      • He should be the lead QB recruiter, right? Kind of hard to judge at this point, but we sure strike out a lot with HS QB’s. Hopefully Dorman breaks that trend.

    • 4
      2

Honestly, I think this is huge for us, mainly that it allows our young DBs to have another year to grow and learn, while grant starts, and plus his leadership on the bench for another year is a plus.

      • I hear ya, Obj
To me Cap’n Grant seems to typify much of Beavs FB; great attitude but just a bit short on size/skill. Oh, there are exceptions to that general thought, but JS really has built a respectable culture in Corvallis.
Now if we could just recruit a few 320 lb Islanders!

I find a lot of truth in what BOTH SanDiego and Chris have to say below.

        • There’s a role for a guy like him; great attitude. Just wish there was a better S in front of him to pair w/Julian.

I like the guy, but he’s likely not a starter elsewhere in PAC.

      • 5
        3

I think this is big. Grant has shown to be a leader, and has an uncanny knack for making plays. Definitely not the most physically imposing but he brings a lot to the table. Should be a big boost to the overall secondary

        • It seemed like for every great play he made this season, he got his ass burned on another. That also could have been shitty play calling by tibs.

  58. Beavs appear to be interested in RBs amd I’ve seen them follow up on Jerry Rice’s kid(WR from Colorado) in the portal lately.

  59. 1

Was listening to the Dam Podcast last night amd they talked a little about assistant coaching contracts and which position groups could potentially be in good timing for a coaching change if Smith decides to go that route.
Coach Blue/Steward/Bray are in good shape because of the timing of their deals and having at least another year remaining under contract. They also say Coach M and Lindgren are pretty sure bets to be retained, so the only worry there would be if either coach decides to take another job.
I dont think they mentioned Wozniak on the podcast.
Coach Kefenseh Hynson and Legi Suiaunoa are at the emd of their deals as the year expired, so Smith has the opportunity to replace either, or decide to retain. It sounded like Mama and the other guy on the show were pretty down on both coaches too, based on lack of recruiting results from the Hawaii region(both coaches came from UH) and both the WR and DL position groups have underperformed expectations.
I agree with most of that, although I do think Hynson has recruited well outside of the Hawaii region and helped pull in some talented transfer WRs.
Just mentioning because the opportunity is there for some changes to be made in this new year, and I hope Smith plans to take advantage of it.
    (Salavea, Please)

    • Thanks for the summary NB. Good to know others are talking about Suianoa as a weak link on the staff.

Maybe Niner is taking time with the LB coach hire as there may be some more shuffling in the next week or two?

As for Woz, I feel like he has really been good at recruiting the TE position. I’m not sure about Hynson, so I can’t really make a strong argument either way there.

      • They did also mention with the LB hire, that Bray could potentially continue to coach ILBs along with his DC duties, similar to how Tibs was DC/OLB coach. And that would then open up a different position coaching need for OLBs, or some other configuration of coaches that we just dont currently have.(like a DL coach who also covers OLBs, and 2 DB coaches, or….)
Also, no mention of Cookus, but I would have to assume his contract is up and has to either be retained or let go this year similar to Hynson and Legi

        • Cookus will be interesting to see. He recruits Oregon right?

I feel like our ST has been average at best. A few clever trick plays the first couple of years, but other than that it hasn’t been a super strength imo.

Any news on Musgrave and Collins transferring? Based on what I’ve heard from a source within the program (2 weeks ago), the rumors of them transferring are confusing and unfounded. He said he’d be surprised if either decide to leave and that he thinks it’s pure speculation by “recruiting nerds” that want to be perceived as “in the know”. He also said losing Vidlak is a huge loss for Beavs and thought it could be a decision Sam will regret some day because if he would have been more patient he would have benefited from staying in the program. Thought he was probably a year or two away from earning the starting role but “kids these days want to play immediately.” Thought the key to Sam’s future would be finding the right program with a good qb coach that can hone in on some deficiencies (fundamentals and decision making) but ultimately thinks the kid could have been a difference maker at Oregon State. That said, there was little chance he was going to be in position to earn significant time in 2023 so not totally surprised be Sam’s decision

    • The Collins/Valsin/Musgrave rumors were 2nd hand info from a guy who reads this site. I’ll let him chime in if he has anything to add(if he’s reading this)
My understanding is he is someone on campus who knows some of the players, but like I said before, I havent verified any of those rumors myself amd wasnt planning to follow up because it’s not worth the effort. If it happens, it happens

      • I’m on campus and friends with players on the team, from what I have been told the Musgrave rumors are news to the players they haven’t heard anything, damir thinking of a transfer was due to the potential return of BJ, and Jimmy Valsin is very homesick but it sounds like he’s going to stick it out another year. Have also been told that kipper has let the team know he will be staying for another season.

        • Interesting about Kipper. He had a career year, but struggled mightily against elite pass rushers. If he can maintain his run blocking performance and improve pass pro, he’ll be a draft lock.

    • I was told part of Sam wanting to leave was the coaching/advice he was given by Lindgren. So if the key to his future is finding someone to help him with his deficiencies than in his mind he made a good choice going elsewhere.
Along that note, has Lindgren developed any of our qbs? Luton got better. Gebbia, I’m still not sure. I saw up above the comment that Nolan can’t throw downfield and that has hurt Lindgren’s offense. How much of that is on Lindgren? Chance can huck the ball far but just not accurately. Who coaches him up on that?

  61. WR results have been pretty good. I’m not sure why you would make a change there. PFF graded our receiver unit #27 in the country. Drops were a bit of an issue, but we were roughly average there from a statistical standpoint. Personnel choices have been a bit odd (Beason and Champ), but it sounds like Beason is a practice star that just doesn’t play well in games and he has a ton of potential, so I understand giving him a long leash.

PFF Run defense ranking, on the other hand, was #84 and pass rush was #100.

Special teams ranked #114. Cookus has done a decent job with in-state recruiting (Collins, Gould, TQ, Miller), but outside of Collins, we haven’t brought in any higher ranked guys and seem to lose every head-to-head with Nike. We also haven’t pulled any in-state “hidden gems” (other than Vidlak if you can count him).

    • Carroll will most likely end up at Minnesota or VaTech. He was the #1 player in MN when he signed with ND and it was generally thought the Goph’s were his second choice. Dad was a TE for MN and caught 3 TDs against tOSU in a blue moon win against them. Both tackles graduated as well as both guards, so plenty of playing time will be up for grabs. Dad and family liked Fleck, but the helmet school offer was too much to pass up. Kid graduated in three years and has at least two years to play. Older brother played at VaTech and they were given serious consideration the first time. I would be thrilled if became either a Beaver or Gopher.

Given the Reser Implosion January 7, how about in the next thread people list:

Their favorite Reser implosion when the opposing team had the lead, collapsed and lost; and

Least favorite implosion when Beavers had the lead, imploded and lost?

Should be in the the timeframe of that hallowed, gently sloping side where so many septuagenarians have sat so quietly…

    • It’s been a while since I sat on that side of the stadium but I have memories of fans getting mad at me when I would stand and make noise… “sit down, I can’t see the game!”. Also remember a fan behind me that would yell “get ‘em, get ‘em, get ‘em!” repeatedly when we were on defense. I personally loved this guy but he got under the wife’s skin. Also loved the gal in front of me that would chant “Defense!” regardless of whether we had the ball or not. Biggest heartbreaking moment was watching Reggie Bush field a punt on opposite sideline, just barely staying in bounds and then reversing the field and scoring right in front of me in the fog. Worst game I ever attended was Sac St.

Gotta love that they’re celebrating Tinkle as the third winningnest coach at OSU, well behind Gill and Miller, when they should just cancel the season.

I see where Vernon McKinley is entering the draft. I hope hes drafted by the worst team in the NFL. I will make sure to always root against this guy and his cheap ass tactics and dirty play. I wish him nothing but the worst!

Just tested + for Covid as I’ve been vaxxed twice with JJ. Hopefully, there’s more beavers wins in my future as I feel pretty crappy right now.

    • Shit feel better brother. Hope it goes well for you and your family. Take vitamins and stay hydrated. Two big things to help the process

      • Gets lots of rest and like he said stay hydrated. I recommend Mucinex, it’ll help your body kick all that crap out and keep it from settling in your sinuses and lungs.

        • Thx for thr advice guys as I have been doing the hydration but hard to sleep with a severe sore throat. I’ll try thr mucinex. I do take several supplements recommended by my naturopath. Hopefully, this thing just goes away in a few days.

    • Alpha variant here. Started with being very tired one day thought it was just a hangover. Then 2 days tickle in throat with slight cough didn’t realize I had it but friend tested positive so I got a rapid test and doc called back and said I was positive too. Followed by 2 days fever up to 101 with flu-like alternating chills and sweats plus upper respiratory infection coughing. Then fever and respiratory infection goes away but with an unusual morph into pretty hardcore sinus infection like can’t smell at all (and makes you sit and ponder if this shit was created in a lab) and also some sore muscles mostly sore back for about 3 days. Then your smell starts coming back and you have a little bit of lingering cough that gradually goes away over a couple weeks.

      • Clatskanine explained it very well. I had very similar situation a couple weeks ago. Pretty gnarly chills/body ache for 3 days. And I am vaccinated, but not boostered

        • Thx. I’ve had the body aches, the chills, night sweats, headache, but the stupid sore throat just effing hurts. I was fully vaxxed with JJ so I can only imagine how much worse I would feel if unvaxxed.

      • According to what I read, I have two of the.classic symptoms not very prevalent in omicron…..nighh sweats and severe sore throat.im going to retest on Jan 6 and I’m going to ask them which version of this damned thing I have. Thx

        • More prevalent in omicron not less prevalent…night sweats and sore throat. Those two symptoms seem to really distinguish omicron from the original covid and delta. When I retest on Jan 6, I should have a better idea. Thx

          • A simple OTC remedy that I found pretty helpful was those Cold-eez brand Zinc cough drops. Any time the throat syptoms would creep up, I’d pop ine of those and it really seemed to help tamp things back down. Amd I stuck with it throughout the week. Always took one before bed, regardless of how things felt too.

            https://www.coldeeze.com/

Also, I’d recommend waiting till after your meals before taking one. They can make food taste not great for around an hour or 2 after taking one.

I have to ask. Do you guys all just rush out and get tested when you start feeling crappy? Home test? How do you know that the shot is keeping you from getting sicker? There is no science that backs that up. Just the same people telling you this that told you you wouldnt get the wuflu if you got the vaccine. FYI- the CDC will no longer use the PCR test because it can’t distinguish between Covid or the Flu. That after using it as the standard since the start. Amazing right? Guess we know why there was so little flu the last year or so.

Look around man….You probably don’t trust any of the “news” out there anyways but lots of vaccinated people having way better reactions than the non-vaccinated….hospitals mostly full with non-vaccinated too. Trust me, I have plenty of non-vaxxed family in-and-out of the hospital already….one of them with stroke complications, in the hospital for a month. My entire non-vaxxed side of the family once thought this whole thing was fake, they are suffering the most with complications and health problems….go figure!!!

          • My sister and brother in law live in Florence Oregon, AMD thought it was fake too until they both got delta and it nearly killed them.. They have completely changed their opinion on the matter and both are now fully vaxxed. I just don’t get people thinking the whole conspiracy BS about this. I’ve been vaxxed all of my life including 4 years in the military and I haven’t turned into a zombie yet….lol. my niec believes the vaxx is the mark of the beast and there an RFID chip in the vaccine. I didn’t really believe anyone could be that whacked out about this but my own niece…whatever happen to common sense and reason.. Yikes.

          • I never said it was fake. I have family members that have been vaccinated. I have a son and daughter and law that had it. Co-workers also. I just asked a couple questions. Why after a year or more the CDC is finally saying that the main test used on literally millions of people cant distinguish between the flu and covid? Where did the flu go last year? These are questions everyone should be asking especially those of you that have been vaccinated with something that has fallen far short of being able to eradicate this disease. We are now going into year three of”15 days to flatten the curve” and it just blows me away that so many just keep believing that a cure is just around the corner. Check out the profits of pfizer, moderna, and J&J.

          • Doesn’t matter what the CDC is doing…..they are prone to error just like anybody — again, look around! If you are being sincere then you would go ask an expert your questions!! Please let us know what is going on.

          • Thx to all for your recommendations. I have been taking elderberry with zinc gummies and the syrup too. I’m in day 5 of what appears to be omicron and my throat has calmed down a bit. Still pretty tired but I think it’s on the downside. Advice nurse told me it runs its course,in 5-7 days so we will see. And, no, I just didn’t run out and get tested. I found out that I had come into close contact with a friend that confirmed he tested positive and got very, very sick despite having been vaxxed once but not boosted…people with underlying health issues can’t be too careful with this crap. If people don’t want to get vaxxed or tested, that’s their choice but don’t criticize those who have symptoms and want to stop the spread by taking appropriate steps. I’ve got a good friend in the hospital right now with a signicantly damaged lung from confirmed Delta and it sounds like he might not make it. I can only imagine how much more sick I would have gotten had I not been fully vaxxed. Anyway, thx for all the advice as it was appreciated.. And I’ll trust the data and science over those who think they know more about these viruses but have little to no training than people who have spent decades studying the pathology of these diseases. Being an arm chair QB or coach is one thing, but being an arm chair “expert” on deadly diseases is not very smart or safe. I oboe tooany people that have died from this crap to not take it seriously.

          • Please continue to follow the advice recommended from the health care professional you have been consulting with, and continue to work on having a successful recovery.

Every step that you do, no matter how tiny or insignificant it is perceived or feel it may be, really does help everyone who is working in a clinical setting right now.

    • I got it on December 20. I was down for 2 solid weeks… it just zapped all energy from me. I’m back to work today but still tired and still dizzy at times. I had vaccine but almost 11 months ago so it was all me fighting it. Never had breathing problems. But had cough, headache, sore throat, fever, diarrhea, etc. SUCKED but was never worried about it taking my life.

      • It’s the antibodies that wear off sooner after the vaccine. The memory T and B cells remain at decent levels and that’s probably why you didn’t have breathing problems. Or maybe you had Omicron because that stays out of the lungs

        • Two common symptoms more prevalent with omicron compared to alpha or delta compared are night sweats and the sore throat according to data. So pretty certain mine was omicron bit it does knock you down regardless of it being less virulent than alpha or delta.

      • Sounds like we had the same thing….no breathing issues but all the other symptoms you mentioned. And it does zap your energy. Thx for sharing BB.

  66. A few of the transfer portal RBs I’ve observed OSU looking at so far since Baylor elected to head to the draft.

    Minnesota’s Ky Thomas(2020)
    Buffalo’s Dylan McDuffie(2018)
Wyoming’s Xavian Valladay(2017) (at least initially, although it looks like we’ve pulled back on this one)

Not exactly the big names you’d expect, but also shows that we must not be set with our current RB room for the 2022 season.
But what’s curious to me is why bother going after transfer portal RBs, unless you think another 1 or 2 current RBs are leaving?
Don’t we have enough bodies to take reps between Fenwick/Lowe/Newell/Collins/Martinez?
I don’t look at any of the transfer options listed and think they’d be a standout starter for next year, so why not continue to work with who you have?

Also what i’m seeing this year is pretty much every other team is working the portal now, so OSU no longer has the advantage of being one of only a small handful of teams with extra room to add new players. The portal shouldn’t be viewed as one of OSU’s recruiting advantages like it was in past seasons, because there’s no longer a sitting period and every team devotes a good portion of their recruiting resources towards mining the portal for upgrades.

In other words, I don’t expect to see talent upgrades happening with the regularity we saw between 2018-2020. Instead we’ll be plugging holes with guys of similar caliber to what we have shown to be able to recruit out of HS.

      • Thomas is an excellent player. RS freshman who led the team in rushing yards after the the apocalyptic series of injuries at RB.
Really disappointed that he is transferring!

    • Might make sense to zig while everybody else zags. With the current glut of college players in the transfer portal or still on rosters due to the extra covid year, maybe it would make sense to switch focus towards HS players who get overlooked in favor of quick fix portal guys? Signing classes have been smaller across the board this year. There have to be some players available that normally wouldnt be.

  67. Baseball put out their roster pretty early this year. Usually it comes like week before the first game.

Has 43 guys and the limit this year is 40 so some guys will be non players this year.

Going to see a lot of changes this year. 18 new guys. Of the ten guys announced in the signing class 9 made it in. 1 went to the pros.

Guys who aren’t returning who were eligible to return – Claunch(transferred), Casey, Donahue, Froemke, Giblin (transfer), Hamilton, Keyes, Mascarenas, McMahan, Ober, Pruitt, Valero Sanchez, Washburn (transfer).

Guys like Ober, Casey and McMahan, I think graduated and decided to move on. Others look like natural attrition.

This year will be a year of opportunity for the guys in the field. Maybe only Melton is written in the lineup so far. And if he’s the DH, then every position is up for grabs. Some hot shot freshman are coming in and will be pushing hard for playing time. After what Bazzanna did in the west coast league, my expectation is that he’ll start on day 1 in the infield. It’ll be interesting how the rest of the infield plays out as none of the returning guys stood out.

Catcher has the least experience returning. No idea who will catch. Only Logan has experience starting last year. Other guys are new.

Outfield is quite a mystery. The guys who started in the regional return in Fuchs, Boyd and Meckler. Pretty sure Fuchs came in as a catcher, Boyd was a SS coming and played some 1B last year too, and Meckler also came in as an infielder. So not sure if they all stay there as they really only moved in because the starters got hurt or weren’t performing. Boyd is listed as a IF on the roster but started a number of games in CF. Not sure if Melton goes back into the OF full time. Reed is the only true OF newcomer this year. Not sure if he is ready, I do know he was still hurt during fall ball. When he does start playing the expectations will be high.

Pitching however is fairly well known. Have to replace Abel, Salgado, Washburn and Burns innings. Rotation should be pretty well set, with Hjerpe, Frisch and Pfennings. Mundt should be the 7/8th inning guy or the closer. As always, they’ll need to find a good weekday starter. Verberg is back for his 10th season. Of the new guys, Boisvert showed really well in the west coast league. Kmatz was highly rated. Only two lefties on the team and with one as a starter, leaves just the true frosh Case as the lefty reliever. Thorsteinson is listed at a utility guy so maybe he’ll throw too.

No changes with the coaches. Canham definitely tried to marry up a pro style approach to the college game. Got to the postseason but in an uneven way.
All the losses to Oregon hurt. I’ll be curious to see what adjustments are made. Didn’t he have a different lineup for nearly every game? And really only Claunch and Ober were regulars. With all the new guys, he’s got a lot of work to do. Coach up the returners, get the new guys ready, and get the team to gel quickly. Slow starts are not an option.

Expectations remain the same, make the postseason and at least make supers. They’ll need more than a few of the new guys to really step up for this to happen.

    • 1
      1

Thanks for going to the effort to compile all that. As you said, “They’ll need more than a few of the new guys to really step up …”

Minor addition, I notice that Ryan Gorton was just named Baseball Director of Operations and Richie Mascarenas has a spot as an Undergraduate Assistant Coach.
So, for better or worse, the nepotism continues.

      • It’ll always be nepotism with the program going forward. It’ll just be which generation were they from. The back to back title guys or the redemption title guys. And if they win again, then the cycle will repeat.

    • Talent wise, this will be the most talented team since the 2018 squad. Bazzana will be a star. Melton is gonna have a huge season and Forrester is a beast. Add in guys like Meckler, Boyd and Dernedde, who came on real late and this team will have depth offensively they haven’t had since the 2018 team. Catcher is the one spot that is an unknown. Rotation should be pretty good and bullpen has some dynamic arms. Freshman class has some big time players. A lot to be excited about for this season. They overachieved at times last season but expectations should be set very high with this group.

  68. I sometimes wonder why some of these guys head to the NFL when they aren’t going to get much playing time or don’t seem quite ready, then I realize that Ryan Nall makes 850k a year for 15 or so Special Team snaps a game. Even practice squad players make 252k, so then it starts to make sense. That gives them a pretty damn good start on adulthood IF they are wise with their money.

    • “…good start on adulthood IF they are wise with their money.” Choose your strippers and your blow wisely. Quality counts, that money ain’t going to be around forever!

Seriously, if Nall is investing and living modestly, he’ll have a great start.

        • Yup, “time in the market” vs “timing the market”.
What a jump having significant investable funds available early gives a guy like Nall over the average college grad (not even considering the benefit of not having loans to repay).

        • 1
          1

He’s grossed $2 million in his career. Even if he were frugal thus far he wouldn’t even be close to having enough money to retire for life.

          • 2
            1

It depends on lifestyle. He could pay off a small home with that, carry no mortgage, invest the rest in safe dividends/income stocks or even buy a few properties and collect rent. If he lives a modest life he could live off that. Say three properties generating a 3-4k in rent, some dividend stocks, etc…

He’d have to live frugally, but it’s possible. He could also generate more income with all his free time as the passive income covers base needs.

          • That’s the key. If he can be frugal while he’s “rich,” and do things like you suggest, he can make his life a lot simpler, and likely have more free time, which is highly valuable. Also need to factor in health though. If he gets out without long term concussion issues or a wrecked knee(s), he could really set himself up pretty well.

Hopefully, he gets a FA deal with a good team, is a contributor, enjoys some playoff success, then gets out healthy.

          • 1
            3

If he bought a home outright, he’d have no more than a couple hundred thousand dollars AT BEST (but probably more like $0) which is not near enough to generate sufficient income for the next 60 years of his life.
I hope some of you people plan to hire financial advisors for your own situations, yeesh.

          • Yeah the average home cost is 335k and 225k in the South. But sure, he’d have a hundred grand left. Whatever, don’t bother responding with those types of answers.

          • 3
            1

Dude, he’s made $2 million BEFORE taxes, agent fees, etc. So he’s probably netted $1 million before even factoring in his last four years of living expenses. In no scenario does he have enough to “retire for life” which is the original point I was disputing.

And quoting a national average for home prices is meaningless. Go see what $335k will get you for a house in Chicago where he plays or Portland where he’s from. You don’t want to live in that house or that neighborhood.

          • It would be closer to 1.5mil after taxes. He doesn’t have to buy in Chicago or Oregon, especially his rental properties. These are ridiculous arguments that overestimated taxes and then made some dumb assumption he has to buy a home in Chicago or Oregon. If he wanted to be frugal and retire, he could do so if he invested in the right areas and was willing to make the sacrifices.

    • I liked NB’s above idea of discussing a particular Coach on a variety of factors. Maybe we can do one weekly during the off-season?

    • Nah, there’s basically nothing happening right now. Nearly all of OSU sports have ground to a halt due to covid within OSU or other programs.

Recruiting seems to be over and it doesn’t appear there will be many transfers in or out.

Only thing happening is blowing up the old reser side on Friday morning.

        • A month and a half. I think it’s been pointed out that COVID has spiked every two months or so with a new variant. Only a few weeks into omicron. And with no states putting restrictions back on, it’ll definitely sweep the country in a short time. might get natural herd immunity with the pace of cases now.

        • 1
          1

Few liked my “implosion themed” wins/losses question above….I think the implosion theme is perfect for much of OSU football…Other PAC teams should be having a field day with it.

          • 2
            1

Only counting games I’ve seen while sitting on the west side.

            Favorite OSU implosion:
Vs USC, the year Riley was on his way out. I remember Coach Orgeron got his team to dance to that idiotic “Crank it Like a Chainsaw” song to start the 4th quarter and taunt the Beavs. They demolished OSU.

            Favorite opponent implosion:
USC again. Was it 2016? When they were ranked #1 and supposed to roll OSU. But somehow the Beavs made them look like the most overrated team in the country and the Rogers brothers were amazing.

Honorable mention. OSU over Oregon in the 2018 Civil War. Duck fams showed up with Roses and planned to celebrate a Pac12 championship and the Beavs took them out in 2OT. Best game I’ve seen in person, but I was in the student section that day rather than the West side.

          • The loss to Sac State was a pretty good implosion. Today, what’s almost as shocking as the loss is the attendance:

            https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2011/09/shocker_at_reser_sacramento_st.html

Until that day, Sac State was 0-10 against FBS competition.

Also, I seem to recall that a highly ranked RB recruit was in attendance, left at halftime, and signed with Oregon, so typical Riley implosion.

Katz was not made available to media after the game. Ouch.

          • Beware, reading that story may be a bit demoralizing. It made me think how little meaningful change there’s been in the OSU football program in the 10 years since that loss.

  69. The College Football Matrix guy tweets the obvious:
#goducks all in on a recruiting staff. Might be the highest graded 11 recruiters in our 15 year record keeping. Certianly the highest in the last 5 years.
Can they coach? Can they teach? Are they game managers? And, just as importantly, Can they manage egos?
    We’ll see.

    https://twitter.com/CFBMatrix

    • I keep commenting on this and keep getting downvoted. Not necessarily causation, but their AC’s units performed pretty poorly last year. I didn’t look at everyone, but every coach I looked at that was the case.

    • McCalk:”Every team in college football seems to have a mobile QB who can throw strikes on the run except OSU.”

Angry: “If the DBs and S are going to give the WRs ten yard cushions, they might as well just go sit on the sideline and hope Sac State drops 3 straight passes.”

McCalk: “I am actually sad more than mad at what I watched today. I might be a little older than some here and this harkens back to a time that I thought was safely in the past.”

      Still relevant today….

        • Beavgirl was here just a few months ago. I know what happened with Silverstream as we became friends off the site, but I don’t think I’m at liberty to talk about it other than to say he’s alive, but he had a serious family issue and chose to bow out of Beaver sports all together.

          • Interesting how we slip in and out of fandom. We don’t follow sports in isolation; they’re usually connected to some other part of our life, as there was a reason we started following our team in the first place. For me, the Beavs were one of the connections to my parents that remained consistent years ago when I went to college, became an adult, etc. Being a Beaver fan basically in isolation, AB has given me a group of people to discuss about them with.

Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby is an interesting exploration of the topic.

    Mobile QB

    Ducks

Need to be careful with the glory hole. A Beaver in the hand might be worth two in the bush (tee hee). Their evaluations have seemed pretty good so far, why risk driving off secured players for new, transient potential? Its a tough balancing act. You always want to get better, but if you’re always (potentially) changing players, will you?

  71. These edit guys are getting in a lot of work. Make the commitment edit, the transfer edit, the new commitment edit. It’s crazy all of the sleepless nights the players have making these decisions. Maybe a new industry like a quiet hotel resort where you come to make your decision about the portal or not. Could be a reality show.

    • You forgot the decommitment edit, which I’ve seen a ton of this year. And the video edits.

It’s dumb. I’ve been on the receiving end of this in the past where I offered to create edits on a few occassions.
You’ll be told a list of schools and/or what it should say and then produce something and send it back, only to never hear a response and never have it used. Or as soon as you send it, the information is no longer accurate and the school list needs to be updated. Waste of time.

Not sure what guys like HayesFawcett get out of it

    • It’s not Batch, it’s “GameAbove Capital”…whoever they are. Their mission statement is interesting.

Our mission is to be a resource of capital for well-established companies working vigorously to preserve our natural resources and bring forth innovative solutions in sustainability (oh…and offer Caleb Williams a cool mil).

      • Sounds like a carbon offset capital fund (either legit or scammy). Those are going to be all the rage as corporations figure out how to actually live up to their “net-neutral”, “carbon negative,” etc. pledges that they made a few years ago without much of a clue as to how they would do it.

Turns out the way most will accomplish it is essentially paying other people to plant trees (and offer Caleb Williams a cool mil).

        • Never mind, it’s just run of the mill VC stuff:

“Our investment leadership and team seek out entrepreneur-minded founders who are energetic, passionate and ambitious. We provide strategic investment capital to support new, highly innovative technologies and assist in developing breakthrough technologies for businesses globally. ”

I’d love to hear how Caleb Williams fits into that, though!
