General Thread-weekend MBB/WBB/BB series

140

The thumbs up Beavers have it.

Game thread for this week’s Beaver MBB home games vs UofA tonight and ASU Saturday.

Beavs are clinging to the #3 spot in the Pac12 and a 1st round bye in the conference tournament. This week’s games are pretty key to their post season fate. Anything less than 2 wins will be a disappointing outcome.

Saturday is also the last home game for seniors STJ and Big G (and possibly Tres? although I doubt it)

No pressure.

*Edit*

Hopefully making this a general thread doesn’t doom the baseball and wbb teams over the weekend.

Despite the loss last night, the MBB team can still take 2nd place in the Pac12 tomorrow with a win of ASU, since ASU lost to oregon Thursday.

WBB is on their final final weekend of the season, taking on ASU at 5PM tonight and UA at 2PM Sunday.  Both games on the Pac12 network.  They still have a shot at taking the Pac12 title, but would require 2 wins this weekend and 2 losses for oregon plus 1 loss for Stanford as well.  Not likely, but something to play for.

Baseball(currently 8-0) has first home series of the year, hosting West Virginia tonight at 5:35 and Sat/Sun afternoons.  Games appear to have a video feed set up at this link:  http://pac-12.com/live/oregon-state-university-2

Go Beavs

    • Be Nice !!!
Angry said he was leaving next Monday, it will all be your fault if the Beavs don’t SWEEP the AZ schools!……….no credit if they do. lol

  1. How ’bout that, Beavs shot twice as many FT’s as opponent tonight……….aannnnnd, lost the second chance point tally 20-3.
All the fault of a, usually, nicebeaver.

  2. Beavs are playing short handed every game. Reichle is not a D1 talent and Hollins is athletic but not Pac 12 caliber. Kelly was awful tonight and Vernon doesn’t get much of a chance.

  3. This game had some nice foreshadowing. How many times did an Arizona player get right to the rim for a put back rebound? Amd the Beavs never adjust and it is the same type of play that does them in.
    Very Beaver loss

    • Go look at the box score from the loss in Tucson. You’ll see a common theme. Those who do not learn from their mistakes…………..

    • Lessons by Mikayla Pivec are in order; that gal can rebound!
WBB Friday at 5pm (PT) on PAC12, need to even the score vs the devils. The Realtor will be tough in her own house.

  4. Hollins 15 min. 0 rebounds and his man with the winning off.rebound bucket to win it. Hollins didn’t even attempt to block him out.
Reichle 22 min. and 1 rebound and 0 assists and can’t guard anyone.
The Beavs have 3 Pac 12 players and a slew of Lane Community College players.

  5. I’m still stuck on “I’ll believe 10 conference wins when I see it”. Are they going to lose out? Hard to believe it’s been 29 years since they’ve finished above. .500 in league play. I’m fucking tired of these streaks. Shit-fests against Stanford, UCLA and now Arizona, two of them at home, the other against a dysfunctional team.

  6. We’re at the point in Wayne Tinkle’s tenure where the full strength of “his” teams should have been this season. Yet his best season was the year he didn’t have “his” players on campus yet. How much more time does he get at OSU? Have we seen enough progress that we can reasonably believe he can maintain winning seasons from here on out, or was this the high water mark for WT coached teams at OSU?

    • Add Rueck as an advisor. Tinkle could use some in-game, real time help. Just watching the two on the sideline, Rueck seems way more calm and in control, whereas Tinkle be more reactive, flying by the seat of his pants — definitely more sweaty too.

      • While the valid point has been made that the women’s game is not the same as the men’s, we can still watch the two coaches in action and occasionally get glimpses behind the scene.

Rueck views himself as a teacher and takes the long view. That is apparent if you listen to him and, even, his players. He seldom speaks of the shortcomings of his team in a particular game, rather, he points out teachable situations and views them as opportunities for the future. Just my impression.

Oh, and this particular job at this particular school has been Rueck’s dream for many years.

Jack has made the good point that he was lucky to start from zero in the building process when he arrived, imagine if the same situation applied to Tinkle.

Tinkle seems prone to manage by motivation, I mean he acts like the whole secret is energy, hustle, and emotion. Rueck comes across as more x’s and o’s, but he can use emotion as well, see the number of T’s he has been willing to take.

Do males react better to the emotion of a Tinkle? Do females respond better to the calmness of Rueck?

        • A friend of mine who is currently a high school girls’ basketball coach says he definitely has a different approach with his teams than he would with boys. He says the histrionics (shouting, stomping, in your face stuff) you see on boys/mens teams doesn’t translate to the other side. Probably not a popular thing to assert in some circles, but hey, I’m just reporting what he says.

        • Rueck really proves his worth during the “down” years. Even with key injuries and youth, his teams consistently play at a very high level. Tinkle has his best team in years, and will still miss the big dance — the inconsistency in play is just befuddling. Does anybody have any idea what we’ll get against ASU? Beavs could get blown out, or blow them out. I’ve observed that when Beavs score 75+ they tend to win. Last night was a perfect example. Don’t think they would get blown out, but then Stanford comes to mind. I’m trying to have no expectations.

          • I’m with you. Trying to keep expectations in check because of the inconsistency. It’s maddening.

A week ago they got outshot 28-3 on FT’s and lost. Last night they outshot UA 31-15 in FT’s and still find a fucking way to lose. Did they not learn anything from the game in Tucson???

“The beating on the boards shouldn’t have come as a surprise. Arizona whipped OSU 41-29 in rebounds when the two teams played at Tucson in January, resulting in a 82-71 loss.”

Guess it’s time to forget this clown show and move on to baseball.

  7. Do we want a separate baseball thread for the WV series? Or should I just modify this one to cover all of this weekend’s activities?

  8. Expecting beavs to take 2 of 3 from West Virginia. WVU Friday guy is a great matchup for the new guys. Early preview of how they’d stacked up vs top conference pitchers.

Hopefully coming home, Abel will be able to settle in. Walks are still holding him back.

      • I think Beaver teams went something like 13-0 last weekend, so I don’t think those kind of results will come around often. A friend of mine was crowing about the Quacks 4-0 start to the weekend and then thinga fell apart for them. I think they ended up 5-5 and the Beavs gave them two of the losses.

  9. Told y’all Rueck is willing to take a T. For only the second time he gets ejected near the end of a 12pt loss.
Realtor promised an amaazing 3rd qtr and delivered.

  10. Hey Nicebeaver, I’m seeing some FB offers being made and wonder if we’re sitting good with any of these kids? I realize it’s early.

    • Hey AK, I haven’t paid very close attention to recruiting since signing day. Just taking a break from it, plus it’s way too early to get a good feel for how the Beavs are doing. I dont think OSU is the #1 school for much of anybody at this point, other than mYbe some in state guys. We currently have John Miller and I’ve thought all along we’d get Waling. Alfieri will be wanted by most teams in the country and tough to get, but we do have some connections there, with his brother on the team and another brother on staff.

As far as out of state guys, your guess is as good as mine

    • Start with your handle. There’s no reason to elevate oSu and their one lousy national championship in baseball… and that crappy interlocking OS they can have back forever.

  11. I get a kick out of hearing these commentators try to piece together the changes to the lineup. One seems to stumble every time and the other gets short with the miscues. LOL

  12. Fun fact:

The states of California, Texas, South Carolina and Oregon all have more CWS championships in this millennium than the ACC has in forever.

  13. Weird Baseball game only two three big hits by either team and it ends up 9-2
There were just so many gift runs in this game

  14. Crazy Realtor gets the sweep. WTF happened?

My god, the baseball guy filling in for Parker is an idiot. Does he ever get anything correct?
“He strikes out swinging……and that is the third straight walk to load the bases.”

    • WTF happened? Realtor promised during halftime interview that they were gonna have an “amazing” third quarter and made good on that pledge, outscoring the Beav gals by 12. The margin of victory at the end? 12.

The devils played very physical D and only Pivec can bring the fight to counter that (Kat is in that same, small, category). Slocum foul trouble, seems she panics a little too soon. A lot of contact was allowed and the Beavs didn’t or couldn’t respond by being aggressive themselves, officiating may have favored the home team but wasn’t the major factor. Devils were called for one more PF than Beavs, but the non-calls were another story.

Rueck’s two T’s came in rapid succession, the second which got him tossed was for charging onto the court towards one of the male refs. This was not just an act to jack up his team for the balance of the year, he’d had enough (of non-calls on devils) and really did appear aggressive toward the zebra.

That’s the way I saw it.

Oh, and Simmons got valuable minutes; she’ll learn from that.
BTW, Kat was using crutches as she went through the end of game high five line.

As for the “baseball guy”, one plus(?) to the MBB woes is that he’ll be replaced by Parker when MBB ends. Not sure how many games will have Big Jim on hand but, as said before, Jim has a very courteous way of correcting/teaching. The advanced course will probably include an explanation of the infield fly rule!

  15. Adley with solo HR on pitch 1 of the 6th.

He seems to be sitting lower on his back leg this year and is getting more lift out of his hits. 5 HRs already on the season. I think Wilson said he had 9 total last season.

    • That’s not terrible. It’s also not great.

It needs more cartoonish eyes and a more expressive smile. But the mistake will be that they change those things to make it look more like an evil muskrat with head swollen to the point of popping.

  16. I haven’t seen any reports on the “combine” held by Smith this weekend.

Did notice a piece from the GT on Gebbia and Lindsey, some good stuff there, maybe whet appetites here for the beginning of spring practice:

Lindsey on Gebbia, “He always wants to be the first person there, wants to be the first person in line, want to be the first person in meetings,” Lindsey said. “He’s always first, first, first, hardest worker and all of that.”

Gebbia on playing scout team last year, “I learned that really I just love ball. I love to play the game,” Gebbia said. “I didn’t play in front of any fans last year but I had a great time going out there every day and competing on scout team.”

More from Gebbia, “Not everybody gets to lace up their cleats every day and go work toward something with 100 guys that are all working toward the same thing,” Gebbia said. “I think it’s really a blessing in my life. I’m just really excited to get on the field again.”

Despite the long quotes above, there is more in the article:
    https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-lindsey-gebbia-excited-to-be-beavers/article_09d86802-caf6-54cb-9978-082ebd38cade.html

    • This sort of shit pisses me off. Whoregon is 4-2 and is in the first paragraph as: “not a “traditional power,” but a big name brand.” So a crappy team that isn’t in the top 25 but has an ugly billionaire gets you into an article about college baseball?
This year, Horton will have a bigger belly and the ugly billionaire will be richer. Both of these should be discouraged.

    • It’s hard not to get “conspiratorial” when one reads bizarre shit like that. This numbnut’s article premise is that the “powers are back”, Oregon has NEVER been a baseball power, yet he plugs them three times. WTF??? A better thesis can be made that Oregon baseball has grossly underachieved given the investment and backing.

    • I like they have their “If the world series started today” picks for the 8 Omaha teams as of right now, and they include 7-4 Florida. These guys have a series love affair with Florida, every year.

      • And oregon/LMU makes the list of series to watch this weekend?

Who are they trying to kid?

Sortof like the recruiting sites, these publications tailor their writing to the teams with the bigger fanbases/market share, because if you mention a shitty team with lots of fans early in the season, you’ll get more readers.
Then as the season goes on they can write more stories about what a bright future the “traditional powers” have, despite falling short yet again this season. Click click click

      • Eric Sorenson I believe is an LA guy and he generally gives better coverage to the west coast than Aaron Fitt or Kendall Rogers. I don’t mind a little coverage of our little brothers down in Eugene maybe it’ll give a little juice to the CW games which have all been snoozers the last few years. Better than hearing about how they think Miami is making a comeback since they won 1 of 3 vs a poorly coached Florida.

And I found a stream of the LSU Texas game. Nothing better than seeing LSU losing for the third straight game. It’ll be fun seeing Fitt and Rogers try to justify keeping them high in the polls.

  17. Count me as one who can’t wait to see Glidgerie gone. He’s been dead weight for all of the 7 years he’s been here. At least streaky Steve had a few 20 pt games.

  18. WBB up by 4 at the half, started fast and had an 11 pt lead early in 2nd period.
PF’s ?……..only 2, refs in fear of lil scot?

  19. Wow what a game! The women are clearly the best team in the conference this year, wouldn’t be surprised if they sweep the last few games and still come away with another regular season championship. Can you imagine how mad Stanford and the ducks would be if they can pull it off?

  20. I remember when Lute Olson called us the lowest class of the the conference and white trash farmers.

I bet he’s choking on those words now! LOL I love it!

    • The problem is we do not have enough D1 talent. We have 3 D1 players and a bunch of players tha
t should be at Lane Community

      • I disagree, we’re top 6 in the conference in talent as there’s plenty in Hollins, Vernon, Big G, and Kelly. Maybe even Reichle could be coached up. I’ve yet to see a game with a commitment to D, recognizable offense, and hustle on a consistent basis. This all falls on the staff.

    • Nerve wracking is more like it. Felt like the Beavs should have been able to put the cats away in regulation, just couldn’t make a run when needed.
Pivec continues to carry the load, 47 minutes and 21pts, 14 rebs. McWilliams still contributed eventhough she did miss 2 FTs. Taya 45 mins, 13 rebs.

UofA coach is at the opposite end of the calm-frantic spectrum from the realtor.

Simmons seems to be the most engaged bench player. Kat also stays engaged and encourages teammates from sideline and in the huddle.

Rueck said one of the fun things today was asking players what plays/defenses they wanted to run. Said he liked their involvement in the “problem solving” process. Ever the teacher.

      • That’s not teaching. That’s just a team scouting their next opponent and knowing how they match up, what the weaknesses are for both teams, etc.

        It’s what teams should do.

        Water the bamboo.

  21. Tinkle is not a good coach. He has no recognizable offense. He has no idea when to call a timeout. He has wasted a lot of time watching Thompson bros dribble in circles. Whatever is happening in the locker room, this is a divided team. The coach sons/rest of team are at odds. Reichle hasn’t hit an open 3 yet, and he is undersized. Hollins has been relegated to setting screens. Washington gets no time. Big G has about 300 identical fouls over 4 years.

i think this team would be much more entertaining, successful and unified if Tinkle had trusted Vernon early and decided to go up-tempo and give more guys offensive opportunities. All we see is a slow down 3 against 5, because it is fairly obvious that everyone defers to Tres, Stevie and Ethan.

Perhaps Wayne Tinkle lost these 2 games because he didn’t get tossed from the UCLA game. He gets no respect from the conference and doesn’t seem to demand any. Hurley has whined non-stop for 28 years as player and coach, yet he somehow gets preferential treatment.

    • Kerry Eggers tweeted regarding Hurley:

Refs are swallowing their whistle now as Hurley beefs about nearly every call. Not sure if he’ll last the duration, but if he does, shame on the officials.

    • Squeaky wheel.

If you’re not one, you have to remind the refs that the rule is they can’t have a conversation with one coach without the other being there to at least listen to it. Tell them even one-sided conversations count. The squeaky wheel will always squeak, no matter what happens. So they can keep their integrity and do their jobs, or they can have this one-sided conversation with the squeaky wheel, to the detriment of the game and their integrity.

    • Countless times, Kelley is wide open on those pick and roll things and I don’t think I’ve seen Tinkle make that pass this year. He chooses to drive in to traffic over and over. He does not seem to be getting the calls as much any longer and history has shown that he’s not a good three point shooter.

And interesting (to me anyway), in what was arguably their best performance of the season against the Quacks at home, Tinkle only took 10 shots with 13 points. They also beat USC without him.

  22. Beavs move up from 2 to 1 in Perfect Game poll
they move up from 6 to 4 in D1Baseball poll
and they move up from 10 to 7 in Baseball America poll

  23. Anybody know what the point of the Beaver combine was?
    Were any NFL scouts present?
Was it just a conditioning measuring stick before Spring ball starts?
Did we just have an in-house combine for fun, because we didnt send any athletes to the actual NFL combine this year?

    • I think it was all those things, including scouts.

Scouts are everywhere always. You should know that by now. The only question is “how many” are there… and in what form.

It’s a young team who has another year under their belts. The way to keep that moving forward is to stick to the schedule, no matter what the expectations are. If the schedule has to be modified due to circumstances, only the events change… not the dates.

I’m more interested in the S&C part right now, so I’m good with something like this.

  24. Initial baseball rpis are out.

Beavs at #5. Texas tech at #1.

Oregon at #2. This is good since it’ll get the conference more bids.

Stanford and asu in the top 10.

If beavs stay in the top 10 when conference play starts, they’ll have the inside track to a tourney bid.

    • There must be some “circular reference” errors going on because it looks like Texas Tech and whoregon are 1 and 2 only because they played eachother.

and UCLA at #37 is likely to rise once things get more connected.

The RPI at Warren Nolan seems to track this pretty closely, and it had the Beavs at #2 ahead of uo before yesterday’s loss.

      • Not understanding how that could be close to accurate. Seems like the inane logic there would be that Oregon and Texas Tech are the two best teams in the nation?

    • Add at least at least a tenth to that. Guaranteed that was hand timed.

      Still really fast though.

I think they should test player speed running in full pads and holding a football. Just to see how fast they will be on the field.

    • I get the issue with not having facilities that are even close to standards, but speaking of the costs of building those facilities as being soooo far out of reach (20 million) is what is really telling. That seems like a lot of money, but when you consider how these projects are typically funded (assets leveraged over a long period of time) it speaks volumes to OSU’s fundraising woes. It’s not like they have to raise 20 mil cash and spend it all at once, but the fact that we don’t have a donor base that can spring that in order to salvage a program anyway is sad and I can’t see that happening at any other Pac-12 school. You’d think you’d be able to get on the phone and call 100 of the wealthiest beaver alumni in one afternoon and put together a coalition that meets your needs to get started.

This probably gets done easy if we had a men’s team.

Maybe they’ve already gouged every last wealthy donor for Reser monies? (fingers crossed).

New Go Beavs banner on top of valley must have really set them back.

      • If they called 100 of the wealthiest donors 99 would say “we have a womens swim team?”
And im almost sure we are title IX compliant even with the loss of swimming. That was why we were bring mens track back some time in the future without adding another womens sport.
