General Thread – waiting for angry’s return

325

If angry recovers from jet lag he can supersede this one.
Farthest thing from our minds is a jinx thread, so no specific game emphasis here.

News on FB practice has been sparse, only one more session before a two week break. Post anything you’ve come across, still waiting for Eggers and, hopefully, a Lundeberg podcast.

Busy time of year for MBB/WBB/Baseball, should be plenty on which y’all will have valuable input.  And there is that meeting between Limo Larry and the Presidents which, for once, includes the AD’s.

Go Beavs!

  1. Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrsssssstttttt!

    Bitches

Arizona flames out at the Pac-12 tournament and their season is over (unless they decide the Craig Robinson Invitational isn’t beneath them). I imagine Sean Miller will be run out of Tucson before the weekend.

  2. Steven Nelson to the Steelers for 25 mil over 3 years. Not a bad deal for the Steelers. Another Beaver making decent money, hopefully that helps sell the program. Starting to get a pretty solid collection of alumni.

  3. Just got around to reading about the admissions scam – apparently, an admissions person at one of the universities noticed discrepancies on an application. It occurs to me admissions offices should have caught most of the lies or I guess I don’t understand what they do.

  4. My god WSU is terrible. Have score 3 points 7 minutes into the game.

Between them and Bill Walton, this is pretty unwatchable.

    • I know, but I’m concerned about that slimy bastard Altman and the Ducks, they have been playing lock down defense for the past three weeks. They could win this tournament.

  5. It is amazing to me how much the SEC’s SOS gets overlooked by the polls. Florida having the highest at #42. I would have thought coaches poll especially would be aware, but here we go again, going into conference play with 10+ SEC teams in the top 25 — meaning they should all be locked in since they won’t move much given their “beat-up on each other” schedule.
UO with the 2nd hardest schedule. BEAVs with the 15th. Per couple years ago, the PAC cannot have a Utah crash the party and win the conference, could reduce bids to the under 5 mark.
    http://warrennolan.com/baseball/2019/sos

    • The committee doesn’t use polls to decide who gets in. Rpi already shows pac 12 as the dominant conference. Shouldn’t change much through the year. Pac12 should get min 5 bids as long as they keep winning the non conference series left on the schedule.

    • it was really messed up to have LSU #1 in the preseason poll and now it has thrown off the whole top 25. They have to really dance to keep LSU in the poll at all after they lost 3 times to Texas and then Texas turns right around and loses 3 times to Stanford. Aaron Fitt calls it “poll dynamics”

    • Serious injury, Bob says he was down over 30 minutes.

Bob also tweets this re BASEBALL:

Per OSU’s game notes, Grant Gambrell will start Friday and Bryce Fehmel Saturday at UCLA. Sunday is listed as TBA, and I would not expect it to be Kevin Abel.

  6. Saw the Beavs Baseball at PDX this morning flying to LAX on an Alaskan Boeing 737. Don’t worry, wasn’t a max. And they made it there safely.

  7. Hope I’m wrong but I don’t see the Beavs winning today. I’ll go with the team that’s won 9 of 11 and not the team that’s lost 5 of their last 7.

  8. Abel was diagnosed with a Samsonite injury. Quite rare and treatment consists of having a freshman carry your luggage.

Luck O da Beavs or what?

  9. Does Zach Reichle have a picture of Tinkle giving a BJ to a farm animal? This guy should never see the floor during a D1 basketball game. He cant make a shot, he cant get to the bucket, and he plays zero D but yet he starts. WTF???

  10. Wow, 6 min in and it’s a blow out and I’m walking away to never look back! This team is NEVER ready at the outset of a game, and it’s already over!

  11. WTF happened? Wait, Tinkle is coaching. A veteran team laying a steaming pile of shit in Vegas.
He has failed. See ya Wayne.

  12. The problem with falling behind by more than 20 points is that when you have a 10-0 run you still trail by double digits. In basketball, it is good to try and avoid falling so far behind so that this does not happen.

  13. All of the team’s best players are upperclassmen (except Ethan) and you still can’t have them come out strong to start a game?

Tinkle ought to be fired for this, but he won’t be. Because here at OSU, Scott Barnes and the rest of the leadership celebrate mediocrity.

  14. Nice to see the level of consistency from the MBB! Coaching staff is incredibly consistent with game prep, and getting the guys to respond with the exact same level of intensity for every big game opportunity. It is quite uncanny how they have been flat for every game that seemed to have something on the line throughout the year.

Tinkle already made the excuse pre-game to Mike Parker by saying that Colorado had the advantage because they had already played a tourney game. If that were the case, then why not lose against WSU and avoid the by? I think Tinkle exudes a cup half empty negativity, in addition to nepotistic favoritism. The 3 sons were a combined 15-43 from the field.

  15. Wow we wait all fucking year for “next year”, have a veteran team, have the best season we’ve had in 30 years, finally get a bye in the tournament, aaaaand we get fucking blasted immediately and end up 18-13 which is horrible!!!! Fuck this entire athletic department!!!

  16. We will never be relevant with recruits with shit like this… “Hey, this one time in the past 30 years we were the 4 seed in our conference tournament”

We are going to continue to get shit players and play shit basketball forever. Same with football. We fucking suck in perpetuity.

  17. What a pathetic effort, yet somehow I knew this was going to happen. If they don’t get a NIT bid, I think it’s time for WT to go. Who cares what Tres and Ethan will do if the daddies are not the coaches, it’s not like this is a tourney team next year with this staff in place anyway.

    • Good point.

Ethan transfers to Nevada is on the clock now. Once coaches are gone.

Eric Musselman is going back to the ELite 8 with a very sound Nevada team, and all we get is another wasted opportunity.

      E Muss>W Tinkle

      Thanks BDC, another whiff

      • I’m not saying Tinkle will be fired but any program that keeps a failure because of the money has already lost its credibility…

It sucks that OSU is in that position but Tinkle has proven he isn’t the guy.

        • Yup. He’s had 5 years. One tourney berth on the coat tails of GP2.

If this is the best he can do in a shit league he’s not the guy for the job. He’s ran off every PG he’s recruited not named Vernon (and it remains to be seen if Vernon will stay).

Remember when Tres, ST jr and Eubanks all signed? How’d that turn out??? Tres may very well leave having never played in an ncaa tournament game.

That Stanford blowout loss still sticks in my craw.

When your team consistently comes out flat and unprepared, that’s a coaching problem.

Tinkle is 35-55 in 5 years in PAC-12 games.

This season could’ve been so much more. The highlight to me was the unexpected road sweep of the mountain schools.

Too many head scratching losses though

      • how many years are left on Wayne’s contract? OSU can’t afford a buyout if it’s 6.3 million. Can someone do a total career at OSU W/L comparison between Robinson and Tinkle? I’m guessing the data will show a Rileyesque uptick of performance for Tinkle compared to his immediate few predecessors.

  18. The long awaited Lundeberg podcast, all 60 minutes, is up, in a word…..disappointing. Very little news here, a discussion with Brenden Slaughter touching on way too early game by game guesses. Slaughter has 6 wins, Bob calls for 4.

As for observations on Spring practice: they both seem to think Luton is the #1. More good talk about energy and attitude, mentioned as not practicing: Reichner and Gumbs.

Hard to decipher anything from their comments on Elu…….”beefed up”, “probably lighter that the listed 385lbs”.

Did I miss anything? Here’s the link:
    https://share.transistor.fm/s/9611be3a

  19. BTW, have decided to no longer support “Tinkle’s Folly” by purchasing season tickets. After the latest shitshow I figure 5 years is enough.

  20. Barnes need to back up the armored car and offer Tinkle what ever he wants to stay in Corvallis. I am sure WSU will try and poach him and his son as a grad transfer next year. Wouldn’t you all hate to see WT on the opposing bench?

  21. BASEBALL at 6pm today vs Bruins, no TV. You can listen to Jon Warren on 1240 KEJO or try this link for the Bruin broadcaster:
    https://ucla.leanplayer.com/

Kendall Rogers must be in touch with Bob Lundeberg, tweets:

INJURY UPDATE: @BeaverBaseball RHP Kevin Abel continues to progress, but #Beavs don’t feel overly comfortable with his status just yet. Will likely miss the #UCLA series with that tweaked back. Nothing serious, though.

    • The Luke story just continues to frustrate me. Media takes the justice system and makes it the “Just Us” system by setting forth only the information they want until they get “just” what they want. In this case they decided they wanted to mess up Luke’s life/future even though there is plenty to say he is innocent or at the very least has paid the price and been deemed non-threatening by the courts. No integrity within media for years now.

  22. ¡Por fin!

“That’s not my concern. He needs to prepare for the season,” said Fermin of bringing on Heimlich despite his past conviction. “What happened with Luke has nothing to do with us. The guy has showed up for spring training, and we’ll see what he can do. I don’t even know what happened with him. That’s the truth.”

    • the way I read that story, it looks as if Heimlich is under contract and is reporting. That’s a long overdue break through. Funny thing: the owner of that team understands what Martin Meyer has been reporting on this site for two years, but the media refuses to change its narrative. There’s a great book to be written about this saga.

  23. Adjudication of a minor is still beyond the understanding of sports journalists. I guess it’s easier to keep writing “plead guilty”. I’m pleased to see him getting some chance, although I doubt he will ever step on a MLB field unfortunately.

  24. Top of 2nd
    Malone grounds out
    Fuchs walks
    Taylor backwards K – now hitting .108
Mendazona single to right – Fuchs goes to 3rd
    come on Andy

  25. Beavs fall behind 1-0 after Gambrell gives up singles to the #6 and #8 hitters
Taylor makes an unassisted DP to end the inning.

  26. McGarry and Jones go down quickly in the 3rd – 2 down
Adley with an 8 pitch walk
    Philip grounds out

Pitcher threw 7 pitches total to McGarry, Jones, and Philip

  27. bottom of 3rd
Gambrell gives up a leadoff double after falling behind 3-0
sac bunt moves the guy to 3rd – 1 out
Gambrell gets a 3-2 swinging K for the 2nd out
2 run homer and Beavs are down 3 to Zip

  28. UCLA has good pitching, but Beavs making them look a lot better with impatience at the plate. Hope this isn’t a harbinger for the rest of the season. They’ll be lucky to get one win at this rate.

  29. Top 4th
    flyout, strikeout, strikeout
Zak Taylor struck out on 3 pitches without swinging at any of them, now batting .105

Beavs hitting 1 for 14 in the game so far

  30. Gambrell leaves after 103 pitches, sounds as if he is responsible for two of the stolen bases for the Bruins, oh, and 4 unanswered runs (so far). Walling on to pitch to the hottest UCLA hitter. b7

    A little late Nate?

  31. The ducks keep on winning. Watch them win the PAC-12 tournament! Remember when OSU was winning games and they were losing games? Seems like an eternity.

  32. Taylor and Armstrong combined over the last 6 games are 1 for 26 with 13 strikeouts and only 2 walks. Their averages are so far down that they’ll have trouble getting back to .200 even if they got hot.

I’d like to see McMahan and Ober in the lineup to replace them, and keep Mendazona at 3rd and Fuchs at DH.

Surprised it took so long to get Mendazona some ABs, he batted .624 as high school soph and .570 as a jr

    • ^^^^^^^Yup. Looking for a couple of these guys to step-up to the Kwan. Go from batting 250 to 350 from prior season — to bad Armstrong/Taylor are not the guys. Armstrong seemed like he was getting close to breaking out and had glimpses of good/greatness last year.

      • I thought Armstrong would be a stud this year. More like a dud. If PC was coaching, I would have confidence they would get it figured out, but this is a whole new game with PB. According to some of the parents I spoke to in AZ he is much more “approachable” to the players. Hard to argue with the old school hard ass approach of Casey. Only OSU could have a suitcase F up the baseball season.

    • Agree on Hurley.
One glimmer of hope. The rumor around the B1G is that Nebraska is going to back up the truck and offer Altman everything short of a horse head in his bed to take the Neb. job. I know he just signed an extension. Home state and coached at Creighton. Neb has a brand new area that they pack with fans and the payout from the B1G Network is around 40 million this year, not the $50 Amazon gift card Larry Scott has provided the PAC schools.

i realize it is a 99% chance it won’t happen, but hey, we pried GA away from Wisc. and that worked out great.

      • As a Husker fan, I don’t want them to sign Altman just yet. Miles is a good coach, and they stumbled down the stretch because they lost Copeland midway through the season. Save the money and give him another year.

  33. OSU is a baseball and women’s basketball school. Are we kidding ourselves thinking OSU will be more competitive than breaking .500 in football and basketball on a regular basis? Is it worth investing more time than cheering from a distance? (reading the box score rather than wasting time watching the full game) I want being a Beaver fan to be fun, enjoyable experience. I want to watch OSU teams be gritty, competitive and play their asses off. Is this too much to ask for? Being in a constant state of hopeless denial is exhausting. At what point does a Beaver fan accept the fact that we will (more often than not) be the doormat of not only the Pac-12, but the doormat of the Power 5 conferences as well? If you disagree, tell me how it will change and what it will take? The gap between OSU and that team down south might be too wide to overcome, and mostly due to financial backing. But, they also show a commitment to winning. I really don’t think Ed Ray truly cares, he talks big though.

          • 1. I like Jonathan Smith’s nerdiness .not sure if that translates into a better record than Riley – too passive and resistant to change, and Anderson – not sure what that was all about – except 3 wasted years and running off of Markus McMaryion (good for Markus). 2.I was in Corvallis for some baseball games when Tinkle was hired – I may have posted something saying I wasn’t certain that was good choice. I had watched a couple of Montana games – all that yelling – sortof like Mark Banker with sweaty armpits.

Mid-range results, no major blowouts,NIT in mbb would be quite satisfactory – just not the bottom feeder syndrome and, of course, CWS championship.

    • I’m not saying don’t go to games or support OSU athletics. My point is it worth investing more time than being a casual fan? Hoping the best, but expecting the usual. Comparing apples to apples, oranges to oranges and well…. Beavers to beavers. OSU isn’t “clutch” in sports other than baseball and women’s basketball. The little engine that could, but is running out of financial steam. The whole PAC-12 Network benefits the schools with the most resources, while leaving OSU & WSU behind playing catch-up. I’m not sure what the single answer is? But accepting who OSU is? A mediocre athletic program which does more with less, and on rare occasions shocks the college athletic world and has a great team here and there. My expectations were, after the 2000 fiesta bowl year OSU would finally turn the corner into a perennial winning football program. After the GPII Basketball season OSU would consistently win 20 games per year and making the NIT tournament would be considered a let down, because OSU would make the NCAA tournament regularly? Obviously my expectations are way too high. That is all.

      • Guess what. Being that most college sports are not meant to make money, not everyone can win all the time — someone’s got to be the loveable loser. But it’s not about the money, or is it? Why do the Browns suck year after year? The recipe for good programs falls mostly on talent and coaching — sometimes that takes money, look at Eugene. However, the Ducks are still not successful, or should I say just as successful as the Beavers. They’ve got track/field, but it infused with millions of dollars over decades to get where they are. I tend to like the organic growth of Beaver sports….what is your definition of success? Football wins a championship? All programs have a winning record year in and year out? UO is the EPITOME OF WHATS WRONG WITH COLLEGE SPORTS! Too much money has penetrated the games, and that is sad — like proliferation of nuclear arms — THERE WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH MONEY! OSU doesn’t need a billionaire to fund them, but UO does….my expectations are just as high for OSU sports as they ever were. OSU certainly doesn’t need to sellout, or risks becoming a part of the problem if they do. It is up to the fans to make what they want of the game day atmosphere — go to the games if you really want to contribute!

  34. Sorry, guys… been away on vacation, and now this morning a HS acquaintance died of cancer after a long fight. Might be in and out for a bit again. What’s even more fucked up is a much closer friend just got diagnosed with stage 4.

    • Angry, my condolences to you. This is more important than trivial crappy sports. Life is worth living, and being present, engaged. Not being constantly tied down to screens and electronic devices. I will be praying for you, take your time and do what’s best for you.

    • Thanks, guys. I’m okay. From what I was told, this was a better outcome due to all the suffering the past year +. I’m really hoping my friend pulls through. It’s stage four, but from what we read about this one, it can be beat even at that stage.

      Be back Monday.

  35. Tinkle likely entering nba draft according to former roommate. He “likes the idea of entering the draft” were his words.

  36. Don’t understand why Bailey is pressing the action on a pitcher throwing balls. Could have two guys on base in the ninth.

    • Just read where someone posted on Oregon Live that Eisert should be the 3rd starter and turn Tweedt into a middle reliever. I totally agree as Eisert is just nasty. He was nasty last year and even nastier this year. I’m all in for making him the start on Sundays after Abel is healthy and back in the rotation or even before that. Clear as day he needs to be the pitcher on Sundays.

      • If we pair up Fehmel with Eisert I like the luxury of Eisert on the mound in the late innings. I like the arrangement with the guy with the consistent stuff going first and the guy with the nasty deceptive swing and miss stuff coming in late to shut it down.

Kinda the same with Tweedt/Chamberlain but I only feel good with Tweedt for 3 or 4 innings at this point where Fehmel is usually at least good for 5 innings.

        • We’d have a pretty good pen if we just relied on Pearce, Verburg, and Mulholland. Adding both Eisert and Chamberlain, who are more like secondary starting pitchers, is what makes our pen possibly the best in the country.

The announcer kept going on about the UCLA pen but they ran out 3 guys for an inning each, while we know Eisert can go the distance vs lefty and righty bats. If UCLA had trusted Kyle Mora to come back out in the 9th we would have had a tougher time winning last night. We scored off of both of their other 2 relievers, maybe we’ve just got a better handle on what we have.

  37. I hate to say it and it’s painful to say, but I knew 2 weeks ago that Oregon was going to win the Pac12 tournament. It is highly unlikely that OSU will ever do what Oregon just did. Winning 8 games in a row to close out the season, and winning in dominating fashion in the final game, etc. Nope. Somehow they would find a way to choke and lose, especially with the National spotlight on them. The Ducks have that “it” factor, with a horrible human being as a coach, but he can really coach. It disgusts me to see them succeed after how many incidents that program has gotten away with. The students taking tests for the basketball team, to the gang rapists who gang raped the daughter of a UO athletic department employee only to drop charges after a huge settlement. They played in the NCAA tournament, then left school in April. Dana Altman is still there, and he’s still winning.

  38. Noticed Mama Machado added a crystal ball prediction for the Beavs to land Andy Alfieri earlier today. She doesnt usually bother with those predictions unless she’s been tipped off in some way, so I read into it as good news for OSU.
Last week I noticed when I posted this picture of Alfieri, his dad posted some pro OSU stuff shortly after. And his brother is on our staff already.

    https://twitter.com/BeavRecruiting/status/1103465959333883906?s=19

Anyway, hopefully Angie is right and we land this kid. Top rated player in the state, and he will have offers from most teams when all is said and done. He’s a class cornerstone type player.
Also, keep in mind, it’s only March.

  39. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day I am green with envy. I can’t believe after all the shit settles, the quacks end up in the Big Dance with their worst team in forever.

  40. Dastrup chose Beavs over Grand Canyon and I think it was Vermont. Not sure what that says.

GA story regarding cheerleading coach furthered

  41. Confirmed. News to me was she had an abortion and that medical paperwork is what forced the university to do something. Also didn’t realize the cheerleading coach was not GA’s first and only act of infidelity while at osu.

Coaches don’t think barnes is competent at his job. His handling of a wrestling assistant coach didn’t go over well. Never interviewed the coach before firing him. Will have to look into story. Saw barnes while waiting to board plane. Was disappointed how unfriendly he was. Did hear him complaining about some conzano sorry related to suites at football games. Said he had to make him correct a few details. I don’t know what story as I don’t read conzano.

Tinkle sisters can drink. Especially when it’s free drink tickets at a pregame event.

Even though Beavs lost early tourney was fun. Lots of sports fans in the area. T Mobil stadium is very nice.

    • Sounds legit because there doesn’t seem to be any record of who the OSU cheer coach was. Barnes must have had them wipe her from history.

      • Was Amber Bezates the cheer coach around that time? I know she was for quite a few years but no idea when her tenure ended.

I checked out TMobile for a Duke/UNLV non con game a few years ago. Agree, nice arena. Also nice that it’s walking distance from the strip. Dont think that location was good for the OSU men’s bb team though. They looked like they had been up too late partying in their game vs Colorado.

  42. When they say that a lot of the Beaver baseball backups would be starters for most teams, it’s true.

Andy Atwood transfered to Texas Rio Grande Valley which is currently 12-7 with an RPI of 121. Andy is leading the team in at-bats, hits, runs, has a team best batting average of .364 and also leads in OBP and slugging %. He had a homer in a win vs Oklahoma State a few weeks ago.

    • We met his mom down in Surprise two years ago. Nice lady, but we picked up the frustration with the playing time, so no shock about the transfer. That being said, i remember thinking after Nick got hurt I bet he wished he had stuck it out. He would have been the 2B and had a CWS championship ring.

  43. What can we say. Fortune always smiles on the Ducks and takes a big fat $h*t on the Beavs, it seems. They’ll probably make it all the way to the sweet sixteen, and possibly the elite eight. The Beavers won’t even make the NIT tournament, which is competition for 69th place!

      • I don’t get the sense that “OSU4Life” is a Duck fan. I think he is frustrated at how the hoops season turned out with the Beavs fading and the Ducks becoming a success story. I think most of us have given up on hoops being relevant with Tinkle as the coach.

        • 100% correct! It’s definitely harder to understand what happened to OSU basketball these past two weeks. It’s beyond frustrating, it’s what has become the normal outcome. Will it ever change? Maybe someday, it doesn’t look promising for the foreseeable future. I’ve been a Beaver fan for over 30 years, Beaver Basketball has been disappointing for all but the 2015 season.

          • Tell us how the ducklings will win the big one? Will it be in basketball or football? Will the fans be relieved that all that money was well spent? Maybe it’s the Italian leather toilet seats?
They are the kings of doing less with more… why would OSU ever want to emulate them?

  44. Some more duck love :-) Seriously, I think the Beavs could learn a lot from how the ducks made the tournament.

    https://247sports.com/college/oregon/Article/Oregon-basketball-Pac-12-Tournament-130164489/Amp/?__twitter_impression=true

“The Ducks began a stretch of basketball that saved the season. Oregon’s players say they gave up worrying about their own success and did whatever was asked of them to win. For some, that meant having a more important role on defense than offense. For others, that asked them to swallow their pride and allow others to play more minutes. Oregon’s effort on the court increased. The Ducks are playing harder than they have all year. You see players diving onto the floor for loose balls, crashing the glass on rebounds, talking more on defense, and most importantly enjoying one another’s success as if it was their own.”

  45. It’s 5 days old, but this piece by Wilner sets the table for a report on yesterday’s planned meeting between the PAC12 presidents, AD’s, and Larry Scott. Very worthwhile reading with notes about, among other things, the hiring of an outside group to look at football officiating.

Wilner seems hopeful that changes will be made and sees a power shift in progress. Arizona State AD Ray Anderson and Washington State AD Pat Chun are mentioned as keys to the changes, Dr Ray and Barnes are, notably, not mentioned.

Chun, who sounds like a tough cookie, says, “The past four or five months, the conference has been very deliberate about communicating. And it’s noted.”

    https://www.mercurynews.com/2019/03/12/the-ads-have-taken-charge-of-setting-conference-policy-the-inside-story-of-a-pac-12-power-shift/

UPDATE, as of March 18. More below, after the meeting and by an Arizona writer. Ray losing influence.

  46. Game is underway and broadcast on PAC12, anyone else think Beau is due? 1 for 9 in this series so far.
McGary hits a 1:1 pitch OUT! Good guys up 1-0 t1, 1 out.

    • Now that Taylor has been replaced, Tweedt is next to go. Would like to see someone other than Gambrell get a shot. Burns maybe?

  47. Not only is Philip due at the plate, he is due to start fielding much better. An E today and didn’t look sharp at all yesterday.
4-2 Bruins with one out and 2 on in b1.

80 degrees and even Jon W. knows it is no time to be wearing black……..yet Beavs are in Black tops.

    • I know how much you love Jon W.
Watching on TV and listening to him really shows how badly he does, called a pitch low and inside when TV showed high and probably outside. And, of course, there is the inability to determine how many baserunners are on, and where.

  48. I like this lineup, I think we’re finally settling in. Except I’m not sure why Meckler would be in left instead of Preston Jones

  49. This guy has a Kevin Able change-up. But no curve. Surprising he’s only got 5 innings pitched for the season. 2nd time through might be the charm.

  50. Slumping Malone shouldn’t be hitting at 5th. Not sure why hot hitting Ober and Mendazona are so far down the in the order….Meckler looking like shit too.

  51. I’m having a bad effect on the team today. I’ve tuned in for 30 seconds 3 times over the last few innings to see how things are going, and we have given up a 2R HR, a solo HR and that Malone botched popup which scored a run. I give up

  52. A chance for Beau to redeem himself? Two on and down 3, don’t need anything more than basehit.

EDIT/ADD: FAIL, sac rbi don’t mean a thing

  53. Good news about the weekend: making mistakes and lacking much hitting outside of game two and homeruns today so barely lost to the top team in the conference. Learn early from mistakes. Bad news is guys that were suppose to step in to new hitting rolls aren’t getting it done. Also bad news dropping a series right away. Curious to see how the team rebounds. I guess Abel’s injury is worse than originally reported.

  54. Ok so if we miss the post season next year, Tinkle is out, right? I don’t remember the specifics of his contract but I hope the financials don’t prevent the university from making a change. He’s had 5 seasons of time, and the on court product has mostly been as ugly as a mud fence in a rainstorm.

We are at a huge disadvantage compared to other pac12 schools in terms of location and support, we need a tactical x’ and O’s type of coach who can scheme us to a few extra wins per year. We’re not going to be winning many recruiting battles anytime soon.

  55. Fuck you guys. I’m tired of being the laughing stock of the west coast in major sports. People like you with loser attitudes are a big part of the problem.

  56. Beav baseball drops to #2 in the coaches poll. UCLA goes to #1.

    We’re still #1 in RPI.

Baseball America and D1Baseball both rank us lower, at #7 because they have sworn an oath to always squeeze in a group of SEC/ACC schools ahead of us.

  57. Ladies got stuck in the toughest region, but they got a gift in their 5 seed being Gonzaga, who lost their starting point and 6th woman to injury during the WCC tournament.

  58. I know it’s overkill, but I looked at the NIT selections a little closer. How the hell does a 18-16 Nebraska team who also went 6-14 in league play get in over a team like Oregon St? I don’t care how good the Big 10 is, that seems off. Also, San Diego, who finished 7th (7-9) in the WCC got in. WTF?

Oh well, time to get geared up for next season (sarcasm intended)!

    • Since Neb.is an interloper in the B1G and not in the Big12 where they should be, your post gets a one star rating :)
They were still saying up until a couple weeks ago they could get in the NCAA because of the NET ratings? They started out the season rated and based on the eye test they looked pretty good. Their
starting five was as good as anyone in the league and they have some impressive players/ athletes.
They had no bench and one of the players went down with injury and another went into a slump and down goes Frazier. The B1G this year was a meat grinder with a bunch of very good teams. Even my flawed Gophers beat UW in the non conf.

      • meat grinder or not, a team that won just over 1/4 of its conference games should not be playing in the NIT.

Despite the fact that the Pac-12 did itself no favors in non conference play, that 3rd and 4th place teams did not get an NIT invite is awful. The 5th place team however, did. Four teams are playing in the postseason.

Had Oregon not gotten hot and won the Pac-12 tournament I guarantee they’d be playing in the NIT and the Beavs would still be sitting it out.

I see no one has even mentioned the ACC got three of the four number one seeds in the NCAA tournament. Absolute BS

The non conference schedule turned out to be pretty weak and only included two teams that made the NCAA or NIT tournaments………….

        UC-Riverside 10-23
        Wyoming 8-24
        Old Dominion 26-8 (NCAA tournament)
        Missouri 15-17
        Penn 19-12
        Long Beach St 15-19
        Missouri St 16-16
        St Louis 23-12 (NCAA tournament)
        Texas A&M 14-18
        Pepperdine 16-18
        Kent St 22-10 (CIT)
        CCSU 11-20

    • I think I downvoted this accidentally when scrolling down my screen.

We have 10 people signed up for the bracket challenge so far. Only a couple of days left till the play in games start.

  59. Was last Saturday’s meeting the beginning of the end for Limousine Larry?
Dave Heeke and Pac-12’s ADs have wrestled power from Larry Scott

“Scott’s longtime supporters, Arizona State president Michael Crow and Oregon State president Ed Ray, are not on the three-person president’s board and have, in a sense, lost significant influence.”…”Scott has always gone solo. It has always been about Larry.”

” Eight of the presidents who hired Scott in 2009 and essentially allowed him to bypass the ADs, have since been replaced.
Now the ADs, not Scott, are in charge of setting policy; Arizona athletic director Dave Heeke is the new chairman of the ADs’ council.”

  60. SCHEDULE CHANGE:
Baseball Saturday will start at 5:35 so as to not interfere with WBB which goes around 2:30.
Baseball on the school stream and WBB on ESPN2

    Parker returns to broadcast baseball.

  61. Tough series vs UCLA but I think it showed exactly who the beavs are.

A very good team but not a championship team. Still would have lost 2 of 3 even if Abel started.

The goal the rest of the year is to win every home series and try to get one or two series win on the road. Don’t get swept on the road and sweep a couple of home series.

    • Agree 100%

The question for me, at least, is how quickly will the guys who are just now starting and who are considered to be first line players eliminate miscues, missed signs, and flat out errors. The hitting inconsistency has already been noted. This group has very little margin for error and it isn’t hard to see their ranking falling.

A mid season rank of 15-20 with an end of season rank of top 10 wouldn’t surprise me. Then, anything can happen post season.

  62. Losing 2/3 to UCLA didn’t surprise me. What surprised me was how unimpressive both UCLA and the Beavs were. Our starting pitching isn’t that great and I’m not sure if we can really count on Abel yet. When he’s on he’s really good but hasn’t shown any real consistency yet. Our offense is a work in progress but should continue to be inconsistent. My biggest concern is our defense at 3B and Malone in RF. In fact, there’s been several indications this year that Malone is a liability… at the plate, on the bases and in the field. Last year it was easy to hide his weaknesses but this year not so much. Beavs will probably finish 4th or 5th in Pac 12. Stanford wins it with ASU and UCLA battling for second. UW will be other contender for top 5.

  63. Sounds like Beavs mbb assistant Greg Gottlieb may be a candidate for a few head coaching vacancies. Have seen his name come up in UNLV and Cal Poly rumors tonight.

  64. Look for Kevin Abel to see relief duty this weekend, per comments by Bailey on radio. This as a step towards getting him back into the starting rotation.

PB also said, of Beau Philip’s woes at the plate, “He’s seeing PAC12 pitching now.” Pat didn’t seem too concerned about Philip’s bat, or glove for that matter.

    • On one hand, I’m glad it seems like Tinkle finally got a true point guard.

On the other hand, it shouldn’t have taken him three years to finally realize that we need a true point guard badly.

    • “Lucas received scholarship offers from such programs as Nevada, Nevada-Las Vegas, Fresno State, Mississippi, Santa Clara and Tulsa.”

“Hunt averaged 11.8 points, 7.1 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 2.1 steals as the Knights went 25-7, won the league title and advanced to the sectional finals this season. He received scholarship offers from the likes of Southern Cal, Nevada, UNLV, San Diego State, Boise State and Colorado State.”

“Franklin had scholarship offers from New Mexico, Northeastern, Pepperdine and Texas-El Paso.”

  65. An interesting name that popped up on my fb recruiting radar a few days ago is Mique Juarez. Former 2016 5* Linebacker. Riley originally recruited him and I believe Andersen actually got him to visit campus at one point, but he ended up at UCLA.(had offers from pretty much every school you could think of)

    https://247sports.com/Player/Mique-Juarez-49705/high-school-84256/

Anyway, he hasn’t had a stellar career at UCLA, partially because of injuries(concussion(s)) and coaching changes. This year, Chip Kelly is forcing him to medically retire, despite him wanting to continue playing. Apparantly Kelly won’t honor his playing scholarship, so he has entered the transfer portal. I tweeted about this the other day, and since that time, several of our coaches look to be in contact with him.

Could be a potential big guy to land for OSU if all works out, and should be eligible immediately because of circumstances with UCLA forcing him out. A name to watch out for.

  66. Baseball needs a sweep this weekend. If Abel does pitch relief, it’ll be on Friday to have him ready for next weekend.

Hopefully home field can restart some of the bats. Jones, Casey, Armstrong all need to grind out some good at bats this weekend.

        • I think we’ll see PC as HC in a while, meantime, we have only a small sample of Bailey in this role.

Notwithstanding his success at George Fox, I do wonder if Bailey puts the “fear of failure” factor into his players. Casey always said that he became friends with his players after they graduated. To some small degree I wonder if Bailey is too nice.

Casey’s warts? He’s got ’em, Angry is the expert there.

Good student based on GPA listed of 4.4. Can never have too much competition.

      Write up from the profile:

Everett is an outstanding high school kicking prospect. He is a good looking athlete that kicks with great technique and confidence. Field goals and kickoffs are both college ready. He hits a pure ball off the ground and has 55+ yard range. He drives the ball deep with nice hang time on kickoffs, college ready. Also a very capable punter. A competitor that does very well under pressure. Everett has the makeup of a fantastic college player. I look forward to seeing what the future holds. Everett has a bright college future. He is a fine young man that is always a pleasure to work with. One of the hardest workers out there. Excellent prospect

    • thanks, OOB. I always liked Grand Funk, indeed most Michigan based rock bands, like Bob Seger. I saw both play in Michigan in 1970. My sister, who I was visiting at the time, lived in a small town west of Flint on the Grand Trunk Railroad.

The bass riff in “I’m Your Captain” is one of the best, right up there with Jack Bruce (from Cream) on “Badge.”
