General Thread/Cal Series (baseball)

349

Let’s do general and the upcoming baseball series (including Portland) in this thread. People asked about Spring practice. I mentioned in the prior thread, this is the football schedule: Oregon State opens the first of 15 spring practices Tuesday, March 7. The Beavers will practice for two weeks, take two weeks off for spring break, and then resume practices the week of April 3.

Spring game is April 22nd.

Also, happy Spring, all! We made it to another.

  1. Interesting stuff on Cooks. To me, it’s that he a very good receiver with a high price tag, yet his height makes teams who have him, think they can get someone cheaper in the draft and save some cap space. I don’t think he’s ever been a “difference maker” on any of the teams he’s been on.

    https://sports.yahoo.com/new-cowboys-wr-brandin-cooks-cant-explain-why-he-has-been-traded-nfl-record-4-times-past-colleagues-however-weigh-in-034539147.html

    • I’ve always looked at him as a not great WR1, decent WR2 and probably the best WR3 in the game. Every team needs a speedster that can take the top off a D and force the free safety to back up a few steps. Cooks can do that plus he adds a little something more. He’d be so good for a team like the Seahawks alongside Lockett and Metcalf. I get why the Seahawks weren’t interested though.

      • I’m not sure why he doesn’t fit in all WR positions.
He clearly has the tools to play anywhere, but his greatest strength is his quickness and routes–perfect for the slot+.

    • What he has brought in trade may be a record.

      Can’t believe he’s entering his 10th year. I wonder if I’ve aged?!?

      Probably his last contract.

  2. Talt and Reader getting the starts in tonight’s game. I get that this might be the thing to do in normal situations for mid-week games, kinds seems like a good opportunity to get your every day guys a chance to get confidence back. Talt steals 2nd and is doubled home by Weber. Perhaps they will make an impression and take a spot. Who knows. 1-1 tie.

  3. Bases juiced. 2 down in the top of 3rd. Beavs down 3-1. Need this out. They score a couple runs and I think this one might be game, set blouses.

  4. Well, somehow we managed to load the bases with 1 out and scored 1 run. But that’s all. Incredible. 6-3 Pilots going to the 6th.

  5. A win is a win and this one was needed, but, 4 unearned runs on 5 errors-3HBP-1 WP-5 bb by the Pilots?
    A “kiss your sister” win?

Nice way to comeback. Needed that win. I know mid-week games are usually not something to get too worked up about but a loss tonight would’ve been 1-7 over the last 8 games. Would’ve been brutal for confidence.

It was dam ugly. 7 hits, 3 of those from bazanna. Still not much to write home about regarding the bats. It’s a W though. Hope it’s something they can build on.

  7. OT: Jade Carey named PAC 12 Gymnast of the Year:

“The Oregon State gymnastics trio of Jade Carey, Madi Dagen and Sydney Gonzales were all honored by the league office, taking home eight different honors, as announced by the conference on Tuesday morning.

Carey led the way with six selections, earning her second-straight Pac-12 Gymnast of the Year award, while being named All-Pac-12 First Team in the all-around and on all four apparatus. She finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation in the all-around and on floor, second on beam and vault and tied for fourth on bars.”

    • I talked to my wife the other day about OSU Gymnastics coming back to the prominence they once had, and all she said was, “That’s what happens when you have a gold medalist on your team.”
My response: “Well… duh… but there are other people on the team who are also excellent.”

  8. Beavergopher: OSU and Minnesota both offered 2024 3* pro-style QB Dermaricus Davis, 6’4″ 190 lbs. WSU has has well….

      lol… NIT-picking
If you’re a Duck, you don’t put up with the kind of mediocrity Altman put on the court this year.
      Ducks have standards.
      They also taste best confit.

    • Apparently, Altman is a little frustrated at not making The Dance for two years in a row with all of his five stars. I guess I get his point a little bit, I remember back in the day when the Beavs played UTEP in the CBI finals the Miners had 10k in attendance for both home games, but that was 15 years ago. I lost respect for Altman when he recruited that questionable transfer from the Big East (I think Providence) and played dumb about all the rape allegations and the dude’s chronic bad behavior instead of admitting he knew. Plausible denial does work!

      • At this point, it’s safe to assume all successful college basketball coaches are scumbags unless you have solid evidence to the contrary.

      • My favorite “recruiting” story was the one when Bol Bol committed, and Altman was insistent he was nowhere near Eugene when the kid visited and committed.
You just landed a highly recruited kid, and you’re making sure everyone knows you had almost nothing to do with it in the moment?
Do you know what your job title is, Dana?

      • Creighton is a machine that he learned from, not the other way around.
        McDermott is the same.
McDermott would have been stuck at NIU, if he didn’t have a kid, and he would have been about as successful as Ben has been there… maybe.
        Institutional competence is a thing.
We used to have it for hoops.
        We no longer have it.

  9. Way OT……a bit of coaching wisdom (no analytics involved):
UCLA coach Cori Close reflected on coaching legend John Wooden and what she learned from him before his death in 2010.
“He always used to tell me, ‘Remember Cori, you’re not coaching people’s jump shots. You’re coaching people’s hearts. But if you coach their hearts really well, their jump shots end up pretty good, too,'” …

    • 2
      1

That’s cool and all, but it reduces a coaching legend to woo woo.
I attended his hoops camp, and the first thing he taught me was to put on my socks and tie my shoes correctly–not a joke., and not taken as one to this day.
Wooden is not woo woo in any respect. When he talks about winning hearts and minds, he fucking meant it. And he followed it up with using his power for the better.
We;re talking about a man who put up with Bill Walton in his college years.
Just imagine being Bill Walton’s manager at any job for four years. Now multiply that by making him get good grades.

      • Not sure I know the exact meaning of woo woo, but certainly agree that one short quote will never give the full story the mans approach to life and to coaching. You were fortunate to attend his camp.
I included the item here because it seems to me that some of the Beavs coaches have just a bit of Wooden’s “coach the heart” approach.

As for the shoelace’s, kinda reminds me of the Admiral who said, “If you want to change the world, make your bed.” It’s all about self discipline, isn’t it?

        • His idea on the shoes and socks were somewhat an “attention to detail” aspect, but they were more a coach’s insistence that an athlete cares enough about where the rubber meets the court, they start with that foundation–a sort of “set it and forget it” mentality.
He was all about the Pyramid of Success–most likely what he meant by coaching their hearts.
This quote makes him sound like some wishy-washy softie who wanted to be freinds with all his players.
Nothing was further from the truth.
Coaching someone’s heart was a major multi-faceted project for him. It started with socks and shoes, and it ended in a competitive mindset.

          • Watched a video of Wooden explaining the sock thing – said most kids grow up wearing shoes a half-size too large, because their parents know they will grow into them before they wear them out. And when you have wrinkles in your socks and feet “loose” in your shoes, it can lead to problems.

      • It’s a weird thing with JC. People either love him or they despise him. It doesn’t even matter what team you support, he has both from all fan bases. I think he’s a just a con artist. If you meet him in person he’ll come across as super genuine and caring, but then he’ll piss all over you and try to make you think it’s just raining.

        • 1
          1

Yeah I have dealt with him via PMs on Twitter. He invited me out for coffee to discuss my site and the Beavs…lol. That’s the charm of the sociopath at work!

My big issue with him is how he handled Riley and was part of that “can’t do better” brigade. I’ll never really bond with anyone who thinks that being mediocre or losing is the best you can do. It’s kind of strange since he himself and his wife are high achievers. He seems to want everyone else to suffer, which again, comes off to me as sociopathic.

          • 14

Never had an issue with how JC handled Riley. My beef was the pedestal he put Brenda Tracy on and then how he leveraged that to drive his agenda on the Luke Heimlich situation. JC never wanted to understand the truth. Was on a mission to sensationalize the story at all costs. To this day I wish an investigative reporter would dig into the truth of what really happened. I have a bit of insight because a good friend of mine was one of the prosecutors (now a judge) and she was completely uncomfortable with the narrative. Spent a week with her and her family at Lake Billy Chinook when the story was playing out. She wouldn’t provide too much detail but said JC and Moran were complete slime balls and had no clue of the actual circumstances. Other than that, I enjoy reading most of his material and think his podcast is good but he has zero credibility and is a hypocrite

          • And remember how flip he was when many pointed out that his radio show had a strip joint as a sponsor? I guess that level of accountability doesn’t apply directly to him as he deferred to the owners of the station if I remember correctly.

          • It wasn’t just that he had a strip joint as a sponsor.
It was that one of the major sponsors of an investigative reporter had been investigated for a couple years and was finally taken down for human trafficking of underage girls.
What kind fo credibility can you claim, after that?

          • One of the owners of “The Dolphin” raped one of his employees and did time for it (maybe part of the same case?). I can’t remember the name of the dude, but it was in the media. They were also laundering money. A company I had worked with had to deal with them on the real estate side for a little while. Shady as eff! JC should have manned up and made management drop them and then blasted them on air, like the way he gleefully pontificated about Heimlich.

          • If you dislike him so much, which I can certainly agree with, why do you read his blog and listen to his podcast? He wouldn’t have a such a voice if people would just ignore him. (oh God don’t get me started on his ACTUAL voice)

    • Ask him how his ex wife feels about him cheating on her with his current wife.

He is a complete douche. And not for that reason alone. There’s been plenty of examples that expose him for what he truly is.

  10. NCAA changes portal rule so you can only move once without having to sit out a year.

Exceptions include mental health hardship. You can bet athletes are going to be hitting this one HARD.

  11. Well, they played some small ball. Kane with a leadoff hit. Talt bunted safely. Had runners at 1st and 2nd. Tanner Smith lays down a sack bunt and runners advance to 2nd and 3rd. Brings up Dernedde. Perhaps the 1 guy in the lineup that should bunt and they let him go. He strikes out on 3 straight pitches. Lol. Wtf Mitch.

McDowell hit by pitch. Loads bases. Bazanna walks. 2-1 Cal

  12. Sellers gives up a home run. Down 3-1 now in top of 3rd. 1 out. He’s almost at 55 pitches and not even out of the 3rd

  13. I don’t understand how we’re so bad at baserunning. Two huge mistakes early in this game. It also blows my mind that Dernedde is still in the line up. It was a refreshing surprise to see us bunt.

  14. Small ball working and plate discipline paying off. Cal walking a lot of batters. Another successful bunt for base hit. Cal walks home a run and then Bazanna hits a 2 run single. Currently 4-3 Beavs. Could be a lot of runs in this game unless 1 of the bullpens can step up to challenge. Cal already on their 2nd and he’s almost at 30 pitches in the 2/3 of an inning he’s been in. Sellers needs some quick innings or else we’ll be going to the bullpen early as well.
Ooh, cal has a throwing error to get out of the inning and Beavs score 1 run. 5-3 beavs. 2 out in bottom 4.

    • His biggest issue is the volume of pitches. He goes full count on every batter. Struck out double digits today which is great but he averages 20+ pitches an inning. Didn’t finish 5 full and he was damn near 100 pitches.

  15. Tallied 8 hits tonight and 10 strikeouts. 5 runs on 3 rbi which were all provided by Bazanna. Think 3 of those hits were bunts. Wouldn’t say the offense was great but switching gears and trying to create offense with nunts, steals, etc clearly messed with Cal a bit. I’m still not sure why Dernedde is in the lineup. He’s now batting .165 on the year. Your daily driver short stop is batting .165. It’s criminal and you have to think he’s got dirt on MC to have stayed a starter all last year and so far this year. His career avg has to be right at .200 or perhaps a hair over.

  16. San Diego State beats Alabama, on to the Elite 8, great, if they join the pac, tinks has a new team to lose to on the regular.

  17. My goodness I can’t believe they played baseball tonight – wet and very cold – I’ve watched games at Goss that were wet, and others that were very cold – never both. Brutal. Congrats to both teams for sticking it out.

    • Recalling (fuzzily) a game – 7-8 years ago? – against an Ucks star (reliever) pitcher, in Corvallis – rain and cold – Beavs won – Ducks pitcher semi-quoted as not caring because at least he didn’t ever, ever need to return to ******* Corvallis.

Watched a video of Wooden explaining the sock thing – said most kids grow up wearing shoes a half-size too large, because their parents know they will grow into them before they wear them out. And when you have wrinkles in your socks and feet “loose” in your shoes, it can lead to problems.

    • I’ve been watching closely–karma is a bitch. Such a bad look, but a natty in hand is worth more than an accessory to a murder? Compare and Contrast…

  19. If sellers hasn’t transferred in, what would the rotation look like? Is he contributing more than the staff had planned on? I’m surprised we have the pitcher of the year and the next year the Friday starter is a transfer in.

  20. Well we’ve gotten 1 hit thru 5 innings today. By a miracle we’re only down 1-0 right now. This is incredible how bad we are at hitting the ball.

  21. Well, thru 7 and we’re down 2-0. Still have 1 hit on the day. I think I’ve seen 2 contacts that made it to the outfield but otherwise it’s been weak grounders or strike outs. This is abysmal. It’s not like we’re making great contact and they’re in good position to make plays. We can’t hit the fucking ball. I don’t think any pitcher is scared of this lineup and why should they be?

  22. Dernedde the hero! Got our 2nd hit of the day on a lead off grounder to short. Unfortunately, the next the batters did Jack shit. So we’re now at 2 hits thru 8 innings. Down 2-0. I know we need to do our best to win the series tomorrow so you need to keep the starters in, but part of me wants them to clear the lineup and go with the guys riding the bench like 3 deep.

  23. I may have to adjust my thoughts of this being a 5-7 place finishing team and say 9-11. We’re tied for last with Cal. We’ve been in a hitting slump long enough to beg the question, is this actually a slump or is this what we are? Tomorrow is a huge game. If we start with 3 losing series on conference play, it’s over. 2 of which were at home.

As I’ve stated previously, this school seems to be too accepting of mediocrity. Elite programs in places such as the SEC don’t tolerate performances like this, and, as the college baseball program with the most championships over the last 20 years, we shouldn’t be tolerating seasons like this either. With our successes of the past, there is no reason we shouldn’t have recruiting completely locked down, yet we don’t. We shouldn’t have deader crowds and forums than middling SEC baseball programs, yet we do. I feel this is because we are accepting of less than elite when we shouldn’t be. There’s are many reasons teams like Alabama, Ohio State, etc in football and other sports have sustained success, and one of those reasons is because they don’t tolerate mediocre seasons when they know that’s not what the program is made of. That’s why you see Alabama football fans calling for changes in staffing when they have a 10 win football season instead of a 12+ win season. They know that is what the program stands for.

The expectation for Beaver Baseball needs to be perennial Omaha appearances or bust. Or, at least PAC regular season champs. This doesn’t come from possibly losing series to teams like Wazzu and Cal in a manager’s third season.

    • This is the part that gets me:
“Even though [our flight] was a charter, I thought, my goodness, those guys have to do this every other week to play a basketball game? It would be exhausting,” he said. “It’s going to be a real challenge to be at their best with that kind of travel. I’m wishing them all the best, but that’s more travel than I would ever wish on anybody.”
I understand USC ignoring all rational thought for money, but UCLA is going to suck for years upon end, because of this. USC is used to getting paid for doing nothing important. UCLA is not.
And we’re only talking about football and hoops.
Imagine the LA schools sending their volleyball teams to Nebby and Penn State, every other week.
      Fuck that noise.

    • Bettors seem to have no problem trusting oddsmakers’ takes on how not being in a regional that suits you might be a detractor.
But I guess those schools will prove the exception… because.

    • Also… this story is about as bullshit as it gets.
I realize pot is nothing that does anything to anyone or enhances any game in any whatsoever, and, if treated properly, should be ignored.
But this is not Saban morally saving Bama.
This is more of the same.

  25. https://youtu.be/jgceyVQ3bOw

Interesting video here from the Beavs’ 1982 tourney game against Pepperdine. A few observations:
-No wonder they added the 3 point rule. Both teams are just packing the paint with zone D and making the other shoot from long range.
-OSU’s offense looks like Tinkle’s offense.
-The game is way less physical than it is today.
-Why don’t mascots sit courtside with cheerleaders anymore? Nightmare fuel Benny on the baseline would scare any opponent.

  26. Regarding baseball – Omaha is the standard – how good a season is is determined how far away from Omaha they end up. One of the great things about Casey’s teams is he had a solid 15-20 guys battling for at bats and innings every year. You’d see a player or two play or pitch their way into regular duty. Given the results so far – I’m guessing there isn’t any help in the bullpen or on the bench.

  27. Just got to Vegas. Thinking if I go put money down against Beaver Baseball, that’ll be just what they need to turn things around.

  28. Ok, really switching up the batting order. Forrester leads off. Talt in 2 hole. Bazanna, Guerra, Turley, Kane, weber, macias and dernedde. I’m not too sure why Kane is so far down..he’s been one of our better guys this season. Be interesting to see if they try and go the small ball route again to manufacture runs. Worked so well in game 1 they decided to stop that in game 2. Also interesting is Lattery on the mound, not Hunter.

  29. Wow, wow, wow. Beavs with an incredibly lucky turn of events. Inside pitch on what was ball 4 and the ump days Cal batter leaned into the pitch. Didn’t look like he was hit and the pitch was definitely inside for a ball. Well, it’s under review now. I think it’ll be overturned unless I’m misunderstanding the situation.

  30. Call stands. The fix is in! The Pac 12 can’t let the Beavs be in sole possession of last place in the Pac 12. As I type that Forrester stares at strike 3 down middle of plate.

  31. 5
    4

You guys are gluttons for punishment since the bowl game. No need to follow any Beaver mens sports until next fall.
Tinkle and Canham are both going to be perpetually rebuilding and will be a waste of time and energy until the teams surprise us all.

Take a nice 5 months break.

So osu is now a football school? Shame they have to hand off the mantle and can’t succeed in more that one sport per year.

      • 1
        2

As crazy as it sounds, yes OSU is conceding the major sports and is a football school.
Wrestling, golf and soccer have been successful recently but no fan base should settle for those minor sports as the school’s main athletic draw.
Basketball has become a disaster under Tinkle but Barnes is satisfied. Baseball is on a backwards trajectory from recent years without much upside talent to “suddenly “ turn it around.
JS has football on the precipice of great things. Hopefully the luck of the Beavs doesn’t strike the football team next year…

Wild pitch. Thank you Jesus. We didn’t need to convert ourselves. And we almost celebrated with a dog pile. Holy shit. Guys. This was way too much celebration for winning a game against the last place team. I’d say act like they’ve been here before but I guess they haven’t. Great to get a win though!

    • You said it.
      They haven’t been here before.
But a lot of people here are acting like it… and a lot of stupid Duck takes are the bonus.

Players jumping around like they just won the CWS. Why no fire in their belly during the games? RB50 is the only player that ever looks like he gives a shit.

Glad they got the win, but Bazzana throwing his helmet in the air after scoring the winning run on a wild pitch as if they’re on their way to Omaha, is a sad and embarrassing sight.

I don’t know about some of these comments. Like I agree it is a bummer the team is in a down year but I don’t get knocking them for celebrating a walk off win… enjoy that shit no matter how good or bad you are.

    • I get what you mean, and like I said I’m glad they won, but to me it’s pretty cringeworthy to celebrate like that when what they’re “playing for” is 2nd-to-last place in the PAC and the win wasn’t even the result of their own doing, it was because of an errant pitch. If they won on a wild pitch for the PAC-12 title or in the post-season, that’s different.

Angry’s gonna love this piece from the GT:
“He told us we were gonna run four miles. We were all in a line, we ran out of here, ran over to the MU (Memorial Union) and he pulled the joke on us that we were going bowling. We got to bowl two games, come back, play some catch and get out of here,” Forrester said.
The outing was part of Canham’s effort to lighten the mood and build team spirit following three consecutive losses at Stanford last weekend.

That is the classic psyche-ology, we are playing checkers and Miiitch is playing 5-d chess.
Who knew attempting to bowl strikes helps you hit strikes better than batting practice?

Perhaps many comments are too harsh on this team and they are just trying to figure things out, but we’ve seen a few young teams loaded with young talent that were much better fielding, hitting and pitching than these guys and it looks to be a long season ahead.

      • 1
        1

Maybe they’re psyching themselves out of their own abilities; pressing, if you will.

Maybe the thought is the dudes are too in their own heads and it’s time to lighten the mood.

They’re young. They all come from successful HS experiences. They put pressure on themselves.

They try a little harder, grip a little tighter, throw a little harder, swing a little too eagerly. They start losing. Rinse, repeat.

Bottomline they won the weekend series, maybe bowling worked.

        • 6
          2

Winning a weekend series at home against Cal should be a given. Ideally, the expectation for a team like Cal is that you are sweeping them, and not through messy wins like we saw this past weekend. Doesn’t mean the bowling worked.

          • 2
            1

            RIF “maybe bowling worked”

Half the starters on Sunday were freshmen or sophomores.

It’s a young team. There will be growing pains. Deal with it, or see if your doctor will prescribe you some Xanax.

  37. 1
    2

Wow you unplug for a week or so and the baseball team turns to dog poo barely scratching out wins

and football is off until next week so can’t look at that for a distraction

    • Looks like we’re in a strong position for Demaricus Davis, a rising QB from CA. He named us as a “definitive visit” after his trip.

  38. PAC-12 making about half what the other big conferences are making from the tourney this year (and even less than the MWC). Two of the tourney teams are leaving soon, too.

How is PAC-12 basketball such a joke? Football makes sense, but basketball should be able to capture interest, money, etc.

    • It must be horrible AD’s. They hire bad coaches and bad conference presidents and the whole thing is just a cycle of despair.

          • Yeah, Georgie Porgie has had two years to get his feet under him, and is still wobbling around.

I had hopes when he replaced the tennis guy he would bring some of his diverse background with him; instead, he seems to have thought the pac was the road to easy street. Although have to say I’d hate one of those arrogant pricks running B1G or big xii.

Still holding out hope that the new media deal isn’t a Scott knock off.

          • The Big12 guy is doing some new interesting things to get exposure, though. Sports is a promotion business and if you’re not good at promoting, you’re not good at the business. What has George done to promote the league other than fumbling around reacting to a changing environment? He has no new ideas.

          • I mean… look at how the “most dominant hoops conference, and it isn’t even an argument,” has done.
Were guaranteed that if the Big 12 doesn’t win, a team that will soon be in the Big 12 will do so.
According to Yormark’s pomposity, Miami will be leaving the ACC for the Big 12? SDSU?
All hat and no cattle is now promotion.
            Good to know.

          • I say these things as a fan of a school in a conference who once had a pompous ass as a commissioner.
I’m not about to start celebrating the same in someone else.

    • BTW, i expect Fenwick and Griffin to both liok better, have bigger inpacts in their supprring roles. Can’t recall OSU having so much deoth at RB: anyone else?

Good christ, typing on a phone…

“I expect Fenwick and Griffin to both look better, have bigger impacts in their supporting roles. Can’t recall OSU having so much depth at RB: anyone else?”

        Sorry..

    • I keep hearing Chiles expects to redshirt. Pros and cons to that? I’d like to see him as involved as possible even if he’s not playing.

      • I expect DJ to start the season but if for some reason that doesn’t work out, I’d expect Chiles to play if he’s clearly better than BG. They can plan for a RS but nothing is set in stone

        • BG seems like a really good fit as a backup. He can come in and run the offense and win games but isn’t someone who is a true pac 12 starter and can make game changing plays on his own. I do hope we see a lot of improvement from him but from reports so far doesn’t sound too much like it.

The offense has all the tools to be a top offense in the conference if not the nation. A 5 star QB with experience and a solid backup with expeas well, stacked RB room with lots of experience, a top OL with depth and experience, speed and experience at WR, and an emerging star TE along with a strong blocking TE. This offense will go as far as DJU takes them as long as he can live up to his potential. He has all the tools around him to succeed and I think he knows that and that’s why he came. He doesn’t even have to be great if he can just be accurate and avoid mistakes that should be enough to have the offense humming.

  39. Cal hired Mark Madsen for their MBB vacancy. Ex Stanford player who won a ring with the Lakers. Did well at Utah Valley.

    • I liked the job he did there. Plus being literally just a few miles from Provo, I found it awesome they beat BYU in their last two meetings.

  40. I’m curious what we do at wildcat QB next year. I’m guessing we probably don’t run it as much? BC obviously no one on the roster is Colletto.

But the role could go to a RB, maybe Fenwick? Could be any of the backup QBs too…DJ and Gulbranson could both handle it. Even Chiles though he’s smaller and we’re probably wanting to redshirt him. Or do we actually try to find a replacement Colletto?

    • It filled a unique spot for them but I think DJ can fit that similar role and even offer more for the defense to think about. The Hammer was great but ultimately ran the ball like 95% of the time. With DJ back there, you have a true QB who can also run the ball very well. He’s also used to running the ball which is great so we’re not asking him to do something outside his comfort zone. I doubt we’ll use the qb to run the ball much but he truly gives the def something to think about in those situations when you can bust out the rpo offense.

    • Lindgren said they’re looking at options to replace him. DJU is quite a bit bigger than Coletto but not sure he can run as tough. I wonder how the 2 compare speed wise not that it’s needed for 3rd or 4th and short but would be nice to be able to break the big runs when they’re there like Coletto did. Agree with creekwater that they’ll have to honor the pass a ton more because he’s a true QB. I would like to see them setup for a 3rd and short like they’re going to do a Coletto type run and then take a shot deep. Then can always pick it up on 4th and short. Would have to be strategic with it but could be a good opportunity for a big play.

  41. Beavs up 2-0, 1 down – 1 on in the t4. Only offense so far is 2 hits for Bazanna and a 2 RBI HR for Guerra.
Offense like this won’t do the job vs UW.

  42. When wins feel like losses…

Now onto UW who are coming off a big series win at UCLA. Beavs can’t even say they’ve played a tougher schedule so far. All ratings point to UW as a clear favorite. Offense needs to figure their issues out quick.

  43. Well there’s reports that Glenn Taylor is entering the xfer portal. Was a little surprised we hadn’t seen more action by now and it would be surprising if he was the only one. Can’t wait to reload with some more 1 and done types.

    • Just noticed the Beavs MBB Twitter account posted some stats about his season a few hours ago before this reporting happened. Do’h

    • Yes completely predictable with the way Tinkle plays mind games and throws the team leaders under the bus after losses. The team will have more younger guys to try to fit and learn the system next year. Tinkle creates his own excuse machine for his continued losses.
He may as well travel to the playgrounds around the country just focus on a team full of self proclaimed one on one dribble drive guys, because anyone worth keeping will leave anyway.

I expect at least 2 more depart, and maybe up to 4 more. Tinkle has created a revolving door with no reason to stay. Once guys see a full year of his antics, they are looking elsewhere hoping for a change. Tinkle needs to go.

OSU fans don’t really care or expect to win in basketball anymore and that is a tragedy. Gill could be the best homecourt advantage in the PAC12 but Tinkle and a long run of pathetic coaching hires have destroyed a once proud program.

    • Interesting. He didn’t deny it though. Perhaps they are working on more NIL options to try and keep him aboard. Perhaps if Tinkle actually had some form of an offense that let players play, a lot of problems could be solved.

        • Yes, this is a major problem. I don’t know how he recruits. If any prospects even watched 3 min of a game they’d know there is no chance to shine in this system offensively. It’s just wild that I can watch an entire men’s game and see like 2 called plays and then watch 5 min of the women’s game and they’ve ran like 5 plays.

          • He seems to be a terrible people manager, too. He’s driven off so many of his top players over the years, you can’t just chalk it up to “kids who can’t handle tough love” or whatever his excuse is.

  44. Wasn’t Taylor just saying that he was excited about the future or was that just Pope? What a mess. This has to be the only major program where a coach could still be employed after these results. Tinkle has to know that. Right place, right time for him….disaster for the program.

    • I don’t see anything on his Twitter saying he was coming back but Pope has definitely been more vocal in that regard. It really is unfortunate. The WT era has ran its course. It sucks that Barnes gave him such a lucrative deal that no sane school would consider picking up so we’re stuck with it for at least next season. This team has been so bad over the last 2 years, and outside Pope and Taylor, I’m not sure what pieces there are to be excited about. Most couldn’t make a basket to save their life. We don’t have an interior game to utilize. Perfect for Tinkle’s dribble and shoot a last second shot offense though I guess.

      • If anyone was going to hit the portal first, I would have picked Taylor just based on the benchings throughout the year and his potential to succeed in a good program. Maybe Tinkle had legit reasons to sit him, but messing with playing time has been a pattern with him through his coaching tenure, so who knows if it was justified. I guess if Taylor does leave, he’s giving his opinion!

Taylor is gone. Book it. Fair chance Pope and others will be next. From what I understand, nobody is happy and many are putting feelers out to see what their options are. This is second hand from a player on the team that played AAU with my son but I believe it’s solid

            2

Tinkle drowns out his assistants. He’s incredibly arrogant and overbearing. He also likes to kick players on the way out when they transfer. For instance, Jaquori M is a great human being and was a great student athlete that was focused… never partied or smoked weed like so many others that have been in the program under Tinkle… yet Tinks was telling other coaches that Jaquori was a bad kid once he decided to transfer. Also heard Tinks handled the terrorist attack in Spain incredibly bad telling kids to get over it. Many had PTSD symptoms. Tinks is not only a bad coach, he’s a bad dude.

          • As I mentioned earlier, Glenn’s Twitter post didn’t say he was staying. If he was staying, why not say that? Honestly seems like a situation where he’s looking to leave, staff is probably working to salvage with NIL somehow.

          • I can see a player finishing out the spring term, and perhaps a few other schools reaching out in a roundabout way. I hope he doesn’t leave. I’m tired of the bus station the program has become. Who was the last player to spend four years on the roster? Stevie Thompson?

  45. A Canzano podcast interview some time ago w OSU President Murthy during which she talked about importance of sports in a university’s profile. Not sure what she could/would do, given the money issue tho.

    • Agree 1000%. Canzano isn’t intelligent nor convincing in anything he says. He is the definition of someone always working some deceitful angle and never fully honest during any portion of his public persona. Wheaton should have had a ‘friend’ greet Canzona with a five knuckle sandwich for his 2012 UW nonsense.
Canzano’s purpose is only to stir up contentions between Duck/Beavs and act like he is an impartial observer. He is a hypocrite.

  46. OT: Bruins to B1G
There are some efforts to change the law in California, but as it now stands state funds cannot be used for travel to, among other states, Indiana, Ohio, and Iowa. Don’t those states all have teams in the B1G?

Likely not a problem for USC, but a state school like UCLA is gonna have to find another way to fund travel for teams. Guess the same applies (applied) when Utah was on the schedule.

Just another factor in the decision to change conferences and it also impacted the San Diego State trip to the Final Four.

      • The San Diego State University men’s basketball team will play in the Final Four on Saturday in Houston, a state that is on the no-travel list. The team got around the ban because the NCAA, not California taxpayers, is footing the bill for the team’s travel. But the ban does mean the school can’t schedule football games against teams in Texas, said Jamie McConeghy, senior associate athletic director of communications and media relations for San Diego State

        https://www.yahoo.com/news/california-may-end-travel-ban-220206323.html

    • I think waaaaaaayyyy too many people are taking a very narrow look at this.
What happens if the Pac lets Apple lease all sports content, with a deal for linear access to be required… and Apple goes and buys Disney?
Why has no earnest investigative reporter talked about the other linear broadcaster out there? If you watched the early rounds of the Tourney, you would have seen the three channels that most cable packages get.

      • Because the “other” one hasn’t been involved in negotiations.

Are you really convinced the PAC is playing chess while we assume they’re playing checkers?

        • It would seem the pac is playing tic tac toe and coming up at a stalemate every time rather than some grand master plan being set in motion behind the scenes to shock the college sports world.

Longing for the good old days of the Rose Bowl being the grand daddy and all teams outside of PAC10 and Big 10 had no shot at it. A very different era.

          • Money ruined the landscape. Without the flashy facilities, NIL, etc. SEC teams wouldn’t have built up the programs they have and wouldn’t lure all the California recruits eastward the way they do.

          • Not gonna argue the money, because duh.
But I don’t think facilities are that huge a difference between the big schools. Those SEC schools need big air-conditioned facilities, because of where they are.
            So that leaves exposure.
Who was on TV every weekend?
Wanna be on TV every weekend?
The convoluted access for Pac 12 content is what kills recruiting, the money being equal or close. That’s fine for introverts, I guess.

        • Who said anything about chess and checkers?
          That’s dumb.
It is what it is, and ignoring what it is to promote some hair-on-fire doom scenario is as bad as coming up with strawmen about chess and checkers.
There are many more facets at play than just college sports, if one would pay more than five minutes attention to the changing landscape. Dismissing Apple’s wad of cash as something they will never ever use to purchase content is just ridiculous, especially when legit reporters are saying they very well could be buying one or another of the mega-providers, just because they can.

long time joe beaver listener, tuned in today thinking that Adley’s 5 for 5 day would be big news. what do I hear, all about the mariners and how to watch them on tv and how great Seattle is for 20 minutes. I sent a text with my displeasure and I get a smug response of we do what we want to do when we want to. That from John Warren, it’s always about him when he is doing a show or broadcast. I replied back that they just lost a long time listener.

    • Denver and Michigan the other two teams. Forget what I said below – both are behind Denver and Michigan.

“DU’s final team score of 197.450 became a new postseason program record, placing Denver in second place behind No. 3 Michigan (198.025) but ahead of No. 18 Minnesota (197.200) and Arizona (196.975).”

  48. Bravs strike first. Bases juiced and 1 down. Talt struck out and then Kane with a base hit that scored 2. 2-0 with Washington coming to the plate.

  49. Not feeling good about Sellers today. Lead off hr. Strikes a guy out. Walks next batter. Gives up base hit to 4th batter. Bailed out by a nice double play. Throws 22 pitches which is about his avg. Seldom does he go beyond 4 or 5 innings. Too bad that’s our Ace. No Dernedde in this first game. Kane is at short and Bazanna at 2nd.

  50. 1
    1

Sellers struggles in 4th. Gives up 2 runs and gets a bases loaded strike out. Around 80 pitches thru 4. This guy is a mid-relief pitcher, not an Ace. What the fuck is happening to what was once a dominant rotation over the years? If he’s an Ace, we’re totally fucked moving forward.

Top it all off, Bazanna gets a lead off triple and we can’t convert. Grounder to third. Strike out. Pop fly. Wow

  51. Beavs lead 5-1 into the bottom of the 9th. Bazanna had a grand slam and Forrester with a solo shot. Bats still not quite woken up though but definitely better than the prior 3 series. 17 hits between 2 games.

  52. A sweep would be fantastic but this is some great momentum getting the series win. Kmatz with his best outing of the year and the bullpen was great today. April is a gauntlet with 3 vs Yucks on the road, 2 vs Zags, USC, ASU on the road and Zona.

  53. Well Mitch gets tossed. Good for him. Beavs down 3-2 right now in top of 6th. Feels like a momentum shift. See if Beavs can recover but the UW pitcher is dealing right now. Faced the minimum 9 batters last 3 innings. Sweep still on the table but beavs offense looks lackluster. Got the 2 runs from a Bazanna hr. He’s singlehandedly kept them in this series from an offensive perspective.

  54. As I was saying, definitely a momentum shift. UW hits a HR and then followed that up with a stand up double. Have someone warming up in bullpen but Dorman doesn’t make a move. With MC gone, I guess Dorman is the man in charge? God help us. Beavs down 4- 2 in top of 6th. Man on 2nd. No outs.
